Okay, but again, you're reducing the discussion to collectives. The whole representation argument (at least in terms of the entertainment industry) is focused almost entirely around what a person is instead of who they are and what they can do. It's just looking at numbers, assuming there's a correct amount of gender (x) and race (y) people that should be in whatever given market, and attempting to force the supply to change regardless of the actual demand.

I'm gonna disagree with that statement outright. "Women" and "men" aren't faceless monolithic collectives, with common stats and capabilities across the board for each particular set. It dismisses and ignores some of the most genuinely excellent female characters written and directed by men, and some of the most disastrously bad characters written or directed by women, because it's ignoring the merits and faults of them as individuals. It's missing the trees for the forest, so to speak.

I don't really have any continuing interest in or loyalty to the DCEU, especially after WB basically told me that my appreciation for their first couple of efforts didn't matter. So I'm not going to pretend that I'm particularly stoked for Shazam or Aquaman, and I'm not gonna spend a whole bunch of time or energy sticking up for a franchise that's begun to get on my nerves with its lack of direction. But this whole mentality of "yeah, that looks good, but fuck them anyways" drives me up the wall.

What I think really kills me is how blatantly the DCEU has shifted gears in order to appease people who are never going to give them the benefit of the doubt. Yeah, I know, I'm in the minority in actually liking MoS and BvS, and they're never going to make Marvel money by making movies that only appeal to a small handful, but at least that small handful was genuinely appreciative. With the hatchet-job they did with Justice League and these new "hey, let's be the other Marvel" styled movies, they've thrown what support they had under the bus to court a fanbase who has already decided that whatever efforts they make will never be good enough.

I think those early Spider-Man comics showed me that I would have not liked teenaged Stan Lee.

I always got the impression that Stan was never actually a teenager, and his angsty stuff in the early days of Spider-Man, the FF, and the original X-Men was him doing a "how do you do, fellow children?" routine. He's like Patrick Stewart in that I can never imagine either of them as ever being young; they were just born old.

Y'know, honestly, OG Spider-Man wasn't really all that 'light-hearted' of a character. I mean, yeah, he wasn't the Punisher or anything, but a lot of the appeal of the Lee/Ditko run was how heavily they leaned on the influence of the soap-opera books they were doing in the 50s and early 60s before applying it to the superhero format. He'd fire off plenty of zingers when in costume, sure, but Peter Parker was the original teen-angst superhero.
