Marvels NuHumans

Centuries ago, an extraterrestrial race known as the Kree waged a long war with high casualties. In need of more soldiers, one vicious faction among the Kree decided to genetically modify the DNA of other intelligent creatures across various planets, intending to create a warrior/slave caste that they could use to help win the prolonged war. The Kree eventually came to Earth, where they created their own installation and began experimenting on groups of humans, using their blood, changing their genetic makeup, which gave them the latent potential to develop superhuman abilities.
Before the experiments could be completed, another faction of the Kree came to Earth to shut down the project. The Kree eventually left Earth, believing their experiments were unsuccessful. However, the altered genes of the Human test subjects were passed on through generations of their descendants. The Kree also left behind the numerous Terrigen Crystals, which could be used to activate the dormant genetic modifications.

With each passing generation, the discovery of Terrigen Crystals led to more and more of what would come to be known as Inhumans appearing on Earth through what is now known as Terrigenesis. Upon exposure to the Terrigen, the subject would be cocooned and their DNA re-written. When they emerged they would now possess abilities beyond that of mortals and in some cases, a physical transformation may also have taken place. Most, if not all of these people were met with fear and loathing and were persecuted for their difference to the norm. Eventually, a cluster of Inhumans who had had enough of the world used their advanced abilities and intellects to leave the planet and settle on the moon in a utopia they called Attilan. Over the years more Inhuman settlements have popped up across the world, hidden away from prying eyes where they can live in peace and practice their ways in anonymity. These tribes would pass their Inhuman gene on down the generations, many of these descendants would go through their entire lives without knowing their potential.

In 2020, the world was quiet. With most people safely locked away in their homes due to an ongoing pandemic, the global threats that had plagued them seemed like a distant memory and the likes of SHIELD and the Avengers were not needed. That was until one day in August that a battle high above the clouds raged between the Inhumans of Attilan and one of their own, Maximus the Mad. Near death and desperate, Maximus activated his ultimate weapon, a Terrigen Crystal powered weather device. Creating a storm of pure Terrigen across the entire planet, The Mad King’s goal was to force Terrigenesis on the human population below to create his own army. In part, his plan would work as many caught in the raging monsoon would undergo the transformation but Maximus would be defeated before he could see the results. The resulting propagation around the world affected all humans with Inhuman ancestry caught in the storm causing them to undergo wild Terrigenesis a process that consisted of the formation of a cocoon around them, which would then hatch after a variable period of time. The cocoon could open immediately after forming, or days later. The resulting superpowered individuals from this event became known as NuHumans and became a new target for persecution.

It is now January of 2021, the world seems a little more normal again. In upstate New York at the famous Empire State University, destiny like the puppet master it is has begun to pull the strings of fate to bring together a group of NuHumans created by the storm in order to protect a world that will never fully understand them.

The Basics:

In this role play we will be playing the titular NuHumans; a group of young men and women who have gained extraordinary abilities from being exposed to the Terrigen Storm. Our characters will primarily be students at Empire State Univery (Alma mater to the likes of Spider-Man, Mr Fantastic and Norman Osborn) who are drawn together on the first day of a brand new school year.

I’ve gone with college kids rather than the typical high schooler as I believe that being a little older will allow for much more dramatic and more mature storytelling. This will be an 18+ role play with focus on some of the darker aspects of the comic book world, if that’s not your bag, this is not the rp for you. In regards to abilities, try to think a little outside the box. Let’s not fall into the trap of “this guy shoots fire, this girl can teleport” get a bit creative with it! Maybe you’re a twin who can now merge with their counterpart to form a superbeing? Maybe you’re a girl who can now control mirrors? The possibilities are endless.

I have it in my mind that this rp would be very similar to a tv show in that it will follow an almost episodic format and have seasons. For example; season one will be all about getting to know the team and their powers. Season two would have them up against a great threat etc…

We will not be heroes with costumes and aliases straight away. Early focus will be on building the team and their relationships.

Setting

Timeline wise; this story will exist in its own universe outside of the main Marvel continuity and the MCU and will generally act as a mixture of both. The year is 2021; superheroes have been around for about ten years. If you want to include established characters and events in your character's backstory then I’m cool with that. If anything you’ve written clashes with my plans, I’ll let you know.

Character Sheet

Still here? Cool, let's make a team!

It was a game and it was a damn good game. Tane watched as Soleil hurried away from the kissing circle and off into the crowd of drunken youths. This did nothing to sour Alitane’s mood; he knew how good that kiss was and by the look on the dark haired beauty’s face before she went to the bathroom, so did she. With Spin the Bottle now over, the islander got up from his seat and bowed to the group.

”As always, a pleasure my dear friends. Someone call me when the next game starts” As he began to move away from the gathered group, his chocolate coloured eyes moved leftwards to the creature dancing on a nearby table. Truly they were a vision of beauty to behold but an absolute space case. ”You okay up there, Meadow? Do you need anything?”

Meadow looked down at him as they swayed to the music like a witch in floral print. His was a dangerous mind but they wondered if his heart was the same. ”If you’re offering handsome, I’ll take a Baileys and a dance partner.” Their eyes moved around the room, desperately searching for anything to latch onto, anything that would make this night a touch more bearable but alas, Meadow had resigned to the self inflicted thinking that on this dear eve, they were fated to dance alone. Once Tane had returned with their drink, they kissed his forehead and sent him on his merry way, no doubt with cruel intent in his dark, dark mind.

How right they were; as after a few more drinks the future president of the universe heard the call for seven minutes in heaven and a deadly grin crossed his chiselled jaw. As he watched Nicholas and Alexis head into the closet, a devilish thought began to form in his brilliant mind. Tane made his way through the crowded party to the brightest star in the room: TJ. Seven minutes later, as soon as Nicholas emerged from his time with the bubbly blonde, the Prince made his move. Eyes locked on Nick, he moved his lips to Tyler Jane’s ear. ”TJ, love how about we head into the closet?”

After emerging from her dorm room with Erica by her side, Tyler Jane’s approach to the whole evening had drastically shifted. This was her time to shine- to have fun and drink until the bottles were empty. This was her night. She had already wasted precious time on Nicholas and she wasn’t about to let the rest of the party get away from her. But as he disappeared with Alexis into the closet as soon as she announced the next game, the redhead felt that familiar tightness in her chest. What was it about him that drove her crazy?

Seven minutes felt like forever and every second was longer than the last. Tyler Jane was consumed by her thoughts, eyes staring blankly at the closet door that the two had escaped into, desperately waiting for it to open and be over with. It wasn’t until Tane appeared next to her that she let her gaze falter. This could be good… this could be very good. Not only was he a welcome distraction, Nicholas seemed to have a distaste for his Polynesian classmate. A perfect match. “Lead the way, Ted.” She joked, alluding to a previous comment regarding his resemblance to a certain cold hearted killer.

Tane took the girls soft hand and led her through the party towards the closet, passing by Nicholas with a simple smirk and raise of his eyebrows to notify his rival that the game was on. With the click of a lock, the two teens were now trapped together in the tiny room; drunk, together and pissed off at a certain human being named Nicholas Grey.

How their feud started, Tane couldn’t really remember but that didn’t matter. He couldn’t lie, he held a certain level of respect for Nick; the two boys were very similar in a lot of ways and in another life maybe they could’ve been friends but that’s not where they were. Here and now they were in a game of human chess; a sword fight between to master bladesman and the longer it carried on, the more likely or was that one of them would stab for the jugular.

If Alitane was to make Nicholas bleed, Tyler Jane was the perfect weapon of choice. The chemistry between her and Nick had been instant, palpable and recognisable from move in day. The way they danced around each other with grace; it was a stunning show to behold. Yet he had wronged her. He had made this amazing and breathtakingly beautiful girl sad and like the old saying goes “Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned”. Nicholas had made TJ, Tane’s perfect partner in crime. His machinations were complex and thoughtful and he had to consider his next moves in the game carefully. As mad at Nick as she might be, Tane would not force Tyler to participate. What happens next was solely on her. If she wanted to go dark then he would do that; if she wanted to just fool around in the closet for seven minutes, he would do that too. But if she wanted to really play the game; then it was her turn to roll the dice.

”So…” he began ”What sort of game are we playing here TJ?”

The redhead didn’t make eye contact with anyone as she and Tane made their way over to the closet. She knew who they passed by on the way, but she didn’t care. As the door was opened and the two disappeared (well, she stumbled) inside, Tyler Jane unexpectedly caught the lingering scent of Nicholas’ cologne, as he had only been in there a few moments prior. She knew the smell from their close encounter earlier in the week and had almost memorized the notes of it by now. “Honestly, I don’t even know what move to make at this point.” TJ knew that Tane wasn’t stupid, and he clearly had seen what she was trying to pull. “I thought we both would have conceded by now- I’m drunk, he’s drunk, I look damn good in this outfit. But, no. He’s keeping things going and it’s pissing me off.”

Tane couldn’t help himself, as she spoke of how good she looked in her outfit he had to agree, giving her the once over with his dark eyes. On any other night, she would be someone he would enjoy the company of but not tonight, tonight someone else was his end game. ”It’s all a work, TJ” Leaning back against the wall, Alitane places both hands in his expensive pant pockets. ”People like Nick; the only thing they care about is the attention. He’s desperate for you to notice him but he doesn’t want you to notice anything else. It’s all about the spotlight. Beyond that; who is he really? A pretty boy with a way with words. Once he has you, the thrill for him is over. If you don’t want to play his game anymore then it’s time you force him to play yours. You’re a Queen; Tyler Jane. Make him bend the knee”

The girl couldn’t help but stifle a laugh, crossing her arms over her chest. “I’m trying to play my own game- kissing Griffin was disgusting but I did it anyway and he didn’t even bat an eye at it.” Tyler Jane explained, meeting Tane’s gaze once more. “Nicholas Grey will bend his knee for no one, most certainly not me. To you, I may have a crown, but to him I might as well be the court jester.” The redhead shrugged, running a hand through her hair. “As a guy, if you were interested in someone, what would kill you to see and make you get your act together? I’m all out of ideas.”

His mind lingered on her words for a moment; Tane hadn’t ever felt the way she described. He stroked his jaw lightly as he thought about what he would do given different circumstances. ”Honestly? Men are simple creatures, we fear the unknown. Shroud yourself in a little mystery. Take tonight, for example. Right now you are in a closet with Nicholas Grey’s worst enemy. Can you imagine what is going through his mind right now? What he thinks we must be doing here? He watched you with Griffin, he knew how fake that was. In here, well he doesn't know what’s going on in here and in his mind, you’re untouchable and I’m...well I’m the devil. What you do is use this intrigue to your advantage and drive him crazy. Control a man’s mind, his heart is yours”

The well dressed boy had a point. Behind closed doors, Nicholas had no idea whether or not the two of them were going at it quick and dirty or not, and she could definitely use that to her advantage. If Tyler Jane was anxious about her dark haired suitor sitting in the closet for 7 minutes with the offending blonde, she couldn’t even imagine how he was reacting knowing that she was in here with Tane of all people. “Mystery… I can do that.” The wheels began turning in the redhead’s mind. “Well he’s not stupid, so what’s going to convince him that things went down in here? No offense, but I’m not in the mood for a hot and heavy makeout session right now…”

”None taken. I know if circumstances were different…” As he began to do the maths on how to fuck with Nick Grey, Tane’s smile lit up the room almost as bright as TJ’s fiery hair. ”Sentiment and hard evidence” Lifting up his wrist, Alitane pulled on the string of his leather cuff and allowed it to fall loose. He then proceeded to tie it on to Tyler Jane’s own arm. ”It’s no secret that I never take this off, even he knows that. For you to be wearing it, it must mean something happened in here between us” It was a cold fact, for the Island teen to give TJ his bracelet, which he had had for as long as he could remember, he must truly like her or just hate Nicholas. ”Outside of that door, when we’re in class or just around campus, make it a point to stop and talk or whisper in each other’s ears, regardless if he’s around and even if it’s just to say Hey. To make this seem real, our whole world has to believe it”

Tyler Jane lifted up her wrist as soon as Tane had finished tying on the bracelet and inspected the cuff delicately. It was clearly something that he valued, otherwise he wouldn’t have suggested it as a mechanism of revenge. The redhead looked back up at him after listening to the rest of his plot, “I promise I won’t lose this. The plan sounds like it could work in my favor, and I appreciate you helping me out, but why are you doing this? What are you getting out of it?” TJ asked, not truly realizing the depth of hatred that the two boys had for each other. Tane sure was going to great lengths to make Nicholas suffer. “Also,” She added in, “The only problem I could foresee is Sol murdering me in my sleep.” The chemistry between the Polynesian prince and her raven haired classmate was not lost on Tyler Jane.

”It’s quite simple really. I get to prove a little something to myself that’s all. And if a sweet thing like you gets what she wants, then it’s a win win for us both” With the mention of Soleil, he couldn’t help but let out a chuckle. ”Let me worry about Sol. She’ll be on board once I speak to her. Besides, it’s not like we’re talking about making out all over school, just a hint of closeness that’s arisen from nowhere. It’ll be fine, trust me” Tane was well aware of the time they had left in their secret closet lair and knew it was time for decisions to be made. ”We’ve got about a minute left love. You sure you wanna do this?”

The redhead hesitated for a second. Was this going too far? Would this come back to bite her in the ass later? But in her drunken state with no inhibitions, she couldn’t help but nod her head vigorously in response and worry about the consequences later. She had said it to Erica only a while ago that she wasn’t going to let Nicholas ruin things for her and this would prove her point further. “I’m in.” Tyler Jane stated with a smirk.

In the next few moments, she prepared herself to leave the closet in a way that would only allude to the point of the party game- she tousled her long red mane slightly and brushed the corner of her lip with her thumb to let the lipstick smear just the right amount to make it seem like they were up to things in their time locked away. Tyler Jane stopped short of the door and looked back at Tane. “Thank you.” She stated simply, before giving him a quick peck on the cheek in gratitude.

”No. Thank you” He responded before opening the door of the closet. He allowed her to leave first, tapping her on the backside as she did. He had to make it look real after all. Tane grinned widely like the Cheshire Cat of story past as they exited into the crowded room of students. He found Nicholas face amongst their number. He had made his move and his eyes glanced upon the long legged form of Tyler Jane once more.

The redhead fixed her hair and lipstick as soon as she was in plain sight. She exaggerated her movements in a way to make it seem hurried or rushed, as if she was quickly trying to cover up evidence. With one last look at Tane, she sent a wink his way before making her way over to the makeshift bar for another drink. The damage had been done. 1 point for Tyler Jane.

”And lo, the beast looked upon the face of beauty.
And it stayed its hand from killing.
And from that day, it was as one dead”

Like a cold December wind brushing against their porcelain skin; Meadow could feel an intense aura permeating off of those sat within the inner circle of the spin the bottle game. It was like watching a telenovela or a CW show; the drama was palpable and there had been barely any words spoken. They had wrapped their arms around Talya and Cassie but this contact of chakra’s was fleeting as the blonde soon excused herself to the bathroom following a kiss with the Alpha called Brooks. Something like a raindrop in a pool that swelled in their mind made Meadow want to chase her. Perhaps common sense or sense for danger convinced them otherwise.

It became obvious that the drink they craved was not coming from the players of this particular party game and that was fine; what they had going on was a bit more important than their pursuit of further inebriation; such was life. Meadow placed all ten of their fingertips on their forehead; feeling every atom of the world against their body and loving every second of it. Then there was a touch of darkness after Nicholas and Savannah shared their kiss; Meadow’s baby blues fell upon the scene and although to most Nicholas would seem to be in the wrong, she was drawn to that which pulses from the boy in the glasses; who was the true villain in this story? Nicholas or Tane.

The current vibe running through their veins felt like death by a thousand bee stings. As much as the wholesome content of Alexis, Sam and even Leo did it’s best to wash away that sour feeling in Meadow’s body; it failed. They took a step back from the group, grabbing a bottle from a table on the side and walking deeper into the room. That dark feeling sat in their stomach and began to feel like it was spreading further into their body. It took them to a different place; a place they did not recognise but filled them with absolute dread.

”PENELOPE!!”

The door slammed shut behind him as he stormed the girls room like a bull in a china shop. “Je t'ai prévenu de passer du temps avec cette racaille, Violet. Tu sais ce qui se passe maintenant, je t'ai prévenu Penelope” He unhooked his belt and unthreaded it from the thousand dollar slacks.

”Papa, s'il te plait! Nous n'avons rien fait. Nous étions juste au mauvais endroit au mauvais moment! Tu dois me croire” Penny sat on the far corner of her bed, curled up into as tight of a ball as she possibly could with her bag against the two corners of the wall; the only light in the room a small desk light. Perhaps tonight would be different; perhaps tonight was just a threat. He couldn’t prove she had done anything because she hadn’t; she and her friend had only happened upon the scene by chance; they didn’t start the fire. ”Papa..”

It wasn’t different, within seconds he had grabbed her foot and pulled her harshly from the bed and onto the floor. The white cotton dress she had been wearing had been torn off and was now hanging out of the open window. He pinned both of her arms with his feet; wrapping the fine leather belt around his knuckles. ”Ma petite fille. Ma parfaite petite rêverie. Aucune de mes filles”

Meadow stumbled across the room to a nearby table and climbed on top to survey the room. ”Shway” They span around in place, their skirt twirling around like a stunning veil; the world melting away around them leaving only the music. The liquid fire began to sear Meadow’s throat as they downed probably more than they should. It was a poison to push out the other poison that had seeped into their veins from being around that game. The venom was running deep.

Even in the state they were in; Meadow was a sight to behold, graceful, exquisite beauty in a whirlwind of color. Beware the gypsy dreamer.

Introducing: Meadow
Featuring; Tane
Mentions: Nicholas @metanoia, Tyler Jane @Melissa, Violet @TootsiePop

One could assume by looking at them that the person they called Meadow was just like any other seventeen year old girl at a party. To look upon the visage is to be struck upon by beauty personified. Short dirty blonde hair wracked up in slight curls, big blue eyes staring longingly out of the window at the moon, the chaos around hidden by veils of innocence and inebriation. Then there was the body; adorned in nothing but a white bralet which perfectly cupped her chest and her long silky legs barely covered by a thin flowing floral skirt. Wrists adorned with beads and bracelets; it was easy to assume that this bohemian was just like any other girl at this party; one would be wrong in that assumption. This wasn’t a girl at all. For all intents and purposes, in body and dress sense and in demeanour, Meadow was a girl but in their heart and mind and soul; they just didn’t believe in the label. They were Meadow, lover of men and women and everything in between. They were simply a child of the earth.

Meadow had forgotten how long they had been at the party; it could’ve been five minutes or five hours they weren’t really sure. After an eternity or a second, they broke their gaze away from the bright moon in the sky and dropped it to their left arm where in a slightly more refined chicken scratch the phrase ”Someday: sometime, forever and almost always” had been inscribed. All Meadow knew was that they had run out of sticky notes and needed to steal some more from their next class. The meaning behind the words they had etched onto their skin was unknown at this time, even to them but the world had a way of solving unsolved mysteries; if not then they had the ghost of Robert Stack on YouTube that could probably help out.

Spinning of their barefooted heel, Meadow scanned the room and was immediately enamoured by the beauty that flowed throughout. Not only was it decorated stunningly but the faces and bodies of their classmates through rye whiskey and ginger lenses were to die for. Meadow could in their not so right mind pick any one of them to share their bed for the evening. As their eyes fell upon a young man dressed in an immaculate suit and glasses, he winked before taking off the finely pressed jacket and hanging it on a nearby chair. In that moment they questioned two things; did he really need those glasses? And where did he get that sick tattoo on his arm?

Tane rolled up his sleeves as a smile that would make a rattlesnake weep crossed his lips ”The man may have killed over thirty women but you can’t deny he had a fine taste in apparel, Nicky” Nicholas was like a bad rash that Tane just couldn’t shake. He had no qualms with admitting that Nick was his rival in multiple departments. Their looks and intelligence were by far much higher compared to some of their compatriots. If everyone around them was playing checkers, Tane and Nick were playing chess and neither took any prisoners in any game; tonight of course would be no different. As Tyler Jane made her comment, the Polynesian prince knew exactly what game the redhead was playing and he had no problem letting her have her fun; especially at Nicholas’ expense. ”Well thank you kindly, my love. You’re looking ravishing yourself tonight”

It was a weird feeling; enjoying other people’s drama but Meadow liked that feeling as it was always fleeting. Like most emotions, it didn’t last long before being replaced but such was life. Some days were good, sometimes they weren’t so good but they are forever and they remember that; almost always. Finally a face that brought through an old feeling; Violet. What that feeling was Meadow had no answer but whenever she was around, Vi made the manic dream person feel a little less manic. They did not want to ruin her night though, they knew sometimes that Vi needed her space so with a simple blow of a kiss, Meadow acknowledged their friend before plunging head into the aura surrounding the spin the bottle game.

”Well hello there sailors; might I kindly ask one of you to go get me another drink I’m pretty sure my legs have stopped walking and by the goddess you’re all too pretty”

Location: The Party

ka pāʻani nui - The Great Game

All the pieces mattered and they were all here by the looks of things. Tane’s midnight eyes scanned the room, registering the faces and bodies of those in attendance of the festivities on the first floor. It didn’t take long for the boy to work our who was drunk and who was not, to see where his classmates fell on the Van Wilder scale of party people and party hacks. As his eyes slipped over to the raven haired temptress under his left arm, he could sense the slight dread in her. Watching her eyes frantically search for the he who must not be named was a sight to behold. Tane had clocked Leo as soon as the pair had walked through the door and a subtle smirk crossed his endless jawline. He moved his hand down Soleil’s back and rested it on her ample rear before whispering in her ear; ”Follow my lead and just relax. Why don’t you go say hi to the Pride and I’ll go get us some drinks?”

Let the game begin

The Hawaiian Superman made his way over to the mountain of solo cups that had amassed on a nearby table and took two from the pile for him and Sol. It was time to pick their respective poisons for the evening. From what Tane knew of most alcohols, there was no clear way of predicting how someone’s body would react to the one or another type. This would be an interesting experiment for sure, he could feed the Queen of Kings the high grade tequila to his left and she could be fine but perhaps the cheap as chips beer to his right could screw her beyond belief. ‘‘Twas one of life’s greatest conundrums...how did he get Soleil Jameson so fucked up that she would forget all her problems? He finally settled on a strong whiskey for himself as it seemed the most Machiavellian of all the drinks on display and for Sol he went with a little clever and made up a Moscow Mule; a test of his nonexistent but totally believable bar tending skills. Fuck you Tom Cruise.

Like the deep water predator he was, Tane surveyed the room from afar taking in the glorious set of visions that were the female student body. It almost seemed like an entry requirement that San Agustin Academy’s pupils had to be ridiculously attractive. His dark eyes drifted to Talya and Savannah as they danced the night away. Sav’s legs for days, Talya’s big blue eyes….they were entranced with each other. Truly it was a sight to behold watching there two majestic creatures in their home environment. TJ glanced in his direction, was she looking at him? No she looked passed him towards the booze. He couldn’t blame her, it was an enticing looking table. Still, he did love a redhead. There were so many more but they weren’t tonight’s prey; another time perhaps.

Tane locked his gaze into Soleil across the room and downed the drink in his hand. The problem with believers, is they’ll let anyone in the door and the problem with deceivers is all the bodies buried under the floorboards. What were his intentions for the raven haired temptress? He wasn’t exactly sure yet, he’d let the night fall where it may. There were plenty of girls here to join him in his dark games but she was his tonight, whose to say she would be tomorrow? There would be no regrets tonight, only learning.

He made his way behind Sol and placed the drink in her hand. ”Here you go m’lady. I’m gonna go play some games, care to join me?” The budding politician popped a kiss on her cheek before he made his way over to the gathering circle for spin the bottle and took his seat.

”I’m in”

Featuring: Tane Fifita and Soleil Jameson @Venus

How much tail did JFK get?

It was an age old question oft asked about the 35th President of ye olde United States. As the future president of this great country, Tane Fifita wondered whether or not he would surpass the once supreme leader. This party on the first floor would be a good place to start his quest to beat the greats for sure. It would also serve many other different purposes; networking with other politically minded students (if there were any); getting his face and name known to other students, practice for the future campaign trail, finding out the glorious secret to those fancy little cocktail sausages….

That was, of course, if he could convince Soleil to attend-- and she was stubborn… Le shock…

The Queen of Kings was hitting the strike pads he was manning quite hard. She very obviously had some pent up frustrations she was dealing with, most likely to do with Leo or some other guy. Tane had been in the middle of his second workout of the day when the dark haired beauty came into the fitness center and demanded to join him. He learned a while ago not to try and argue with the broad-shouldered jungle girl.

"Left jab. Right cross. Left uppercut. Go.” He called out. "Other than your aversion to men, Sol, I need you to give me one valid reason as to why you do not want to go to this party.”

"First of all, I do not have an aversion to men," Sol interjected defensively, using all of her strength to follow the combination Tane had just given her. "If anything, it's a temporary aversion to one male in particular. And second, I just don't want to go to that stupid party. I see no fun in getting shitfaced and making dumb decisions that'll be regretted tomorrow morning. Now, if that's your kinda scene: be my guest. But don't expect me to go and watch everyone make fools of themselves."

“Surely that’s more of a reason to go?” Tane changed his stance slightly to allow for a more distance between him and Sol. “Imagine the power you can have over people just by being present when they make those mistakes. The sheer control you can have just by knowing something: that’s real enticing. Combination jabs right, left, left, right cross.” The island boy moved his pads higher for her to stretch out before continuing. “Think of Leo out of his mind. That guy will cause himself no end of embarrassment and you can be there to witness it in all its majesty and will be able to lord it over him for a long time, girl.”

As tempting as was the possibility of watching Leo make a complete fool of himself (or even see his ego take a hit-- wouldn't that be a treat?), it certainly wasn’t enough to sway the boxer girl’s mindset. "Knowing me, my sorry ass would step up to help him instead of letting him learn his lesson the hard way..." she grumbled, swinging and punching pads per Tane's instructions. "And I don't need information to blackmail anyone around here. The power of physical intimidation does wonders. One right hook to the ribs, and bitches end up singing like songbirds."

Tane took a step back and lowered the strike pads. "Break.” He stripped their pads off of his hands and made his way over to a nearby bench to grab some water, while Sol broke her fighting stance and took a seat on said bench. “Physicality isn’t always enough, babe. Body and mind working in unison: that’s where the essence of pure control lies. He took a swig from his bottle and offered it to the dark haired beauty, who gratefully accepted it and took a long, refreshing sip. “Personally, I think you’re being a bit of a coward. You present yourself as this big, bad Queen above all-- I don’t see that. Right now, you’re just a little girl scared of a bit of confrontation. Suck it up. Find that power inside yourself, get your ass to that party, and prove to me that you’re not afraid.”

Coward.

The taunting word seemed to ring loudly across the room, echoing cruelly on Soleil's ears. Coward certainly wasn’t a word people would ever use to describe her; what with the way she carried herself, the way she fought, how she stood her ground and took on any challenge head-on. And yet, as much as she hated to admit it: Tane wasn’t wrong, and neither was Leo when they’d had that fight earlier (although he hadn’t exactly used the word). Sure: there was no denying that Sol was a beast when it came to physical confrontations. But when it came to matters of emotion and the heart, the prospect of vulnerability and letting her guard down turned her legs to jelly, and she avoided them like the plague.

So: was Sol a coward? Yes.

Was she going to own up to it? Hell No.

"What the fuck did you just say to me?" she questioned, raising an inquisitive eyebrow in Tane's direction as if daring him to reconsider what he’d just said.

“You heard me. Prove me wrong.” Anger was a prime motivator, and Tane knew from his prior interactions with Soleil that pissing her off would be a fantastic way to cajole her into attending the party. It was simple mathematics. The more ingredients in the pot, the better the flavour-- and the budding politician wanted to taste everything that this school had to offer: the good, or the bad, or the in between. It was all part of his philosophy. He grabbed a towel and tossed it over to her. “Cool off, put on your nicest dress and meet me in twenty.”

That familiar feeling of deep-rooted anger bubbling underneath her skin made its return with a vengeance. The girl’s hands balled up into fists while her toned body tensed up as if posing itself for a fight. But as much as Sol wanted to jump up from the bench and use her fists to make Tane regret his choice of words, somewhere inside her quick-tempered mind there was still enough rationale to keep her somewhat grounded. She used that small glimmer of reason to keep herself anchored away from unleashing her fury on a friend.

“You’ll regret this,” Soleil eventually growled, arched eyebrows knitted together in a scowl as she took the red boxing gloves off her hands and wiped the sweat off her face with the towel the boy had tossed her. “I’ll make you eat your fucking words, Alitane. Just fucking watch me,” she declared, rolling the towel it into a ball and flnging it at his face before rising to her feet and stomping towards the exit. But when she had reached the door, Shady turned around for a split second. "And for the record: I'm not wearing a fucking dress," she spat before flipping him off and slamming the door.

A smile crept upon his handsome features as he watched her leave. In this human game of chess, all the pieces mattered and Soleil was a very important piece to play.

A short while later, Tane had headed off to his room after drying the sweat off of his massive 6’1 frame. As expected, his homestead was littered with inspirational posters from his favourite politicians, authors, activists and philosophers. There were books scattered everywhere, dumbbells and the wrappers of some tasty energy bars. How blessed must Tane’s roommate have been to put up with his organised chaos. He climbed into shower to soothe his burning muscles. As the steam rose up around him, the boy imagined himself in a hot spring somewhere in feudal Japan, listening to the flutes of the geishas and allowing all of his problems to wash away. His palette would be cleansed, ready to be stained by the events of the party. Soon after, Tane found himself on the first floor, dressed in an immaculately pressed grey suit with his glasses nearly framing his chiselled face.

Meanwhile, up in her second floor bedroom Soleil was letting out a litany of curses as she put on the finishing touches on her simple makeup look. As it often happens when one gets lazy and puts off laundry day for weeks, the young woman was left with a very small selection of potential outfit choices for the party. Most of the remaining clean clothing items were athletic wear that, in normal circumstances, she would be more than happy to throw on and waltz out the door. But gym clothes were probably what Tane expected her to wear-- and she was on a mission to prove him wrong for the rest of the night. So instead of her usual sweats and t-shirt, Sol wore a form-fitting, burgundy velvet dress, paired with silver stud earrings and a pair of low-top white Converse sneakers.

With one last glance at the reflection in the full-length mirror and a resigned sigh, Sol left the safety of her bedroom and made her way downstairs, where Tane was already waiting for her

“Let's get in there, babe.” he said as soon as he was within earshot, grinning at his friend. And with his arm around the waist of the smug, bomb-looking Sol, the two friends made their entrance to the godforsaken party.

I’ll show you who’s a fucking coward…

Featuring; Leon, Nate and Sami

The only way any of them were going to survive this road trip was small battles, tiny victories and time apart. Everyone had their own way of unwinding and calming the fires of their hearts. Some partied, some baked and others like Sami, they punched things; hard. The idea was simple enough, it was Vegas so he couldn’t resist the temptation to go to the famous and original Xtreme Couture gym. It was the home for a fantastic fitness and MMA program and it was the perfect place for Sami to push out a few demons before the evening's festivities. This time though, he wasn’t alone; Leon and Nate had joined him. They wouldn’t have too much time at the gym before they had to head back, there were so many things they had to do and their time in LV was short and sweet.

As the trio sauntered up to the state of the art gym, Sami looked at the two of them with his typical dad look. ”Best behaviour in here boys. We do not have a booking so we’re going to have to lie our way in. Everyone in there can also kick our asses and we don’t want to cause any trouble, so let me do the talking, savvy?”

“When have I ever been the one to get us into trouble?” Nate asked with his eyebrows high in his face. He shifted his eyes to Leon “We should probably focus on Mr. Highwayman here” he said, jerking his thumb towards his best friend.

Leon squinted his eyes at Nate and rather proudly proclaimed, “Joke’s on you, I’ve never stolen anything before.” Well there was that one time with the grape flavored gum when he was 5, but that was a long time ago and to his credit, he hadn’t actually stolen anything since.

Patting both of them on the back, Papi Sami led the two of them into the facility and straight to the front desk which was manned by a young woman with glasses who did not even look up from her computer screen.

”Name please?”

”We don’t have a slot booked but I spoke to Randy and he said I could use the gym for a quick work out before my fight tonight at the MGM” in that moment, Sami was hoping that this receptionist was a racist who assumed all Latino people were the same. The woman finally raised her eyes up from the screen and her jaw nearly hit the floor when she saw the trio. ”You can work me out whenever you want…..” She quickly sat back in her chair, attempting to salvage the sewage she had just spewed from her lips. ”I mean, all UFC fighters are welcome to work out here, go right in”

Nathan couldn’t really believe the words that just left the receptionist’s mouth and had to almost pick up his jaw from the floor as they made their way towards the changing rooms. ”I guess they’re really forward out here in Nevada huh?” he whispered.

“Don’t know why they wouldn’t be,” Leon said, unsure why Nate was being so quiet, “Some people just need a good partner to work out with, hell I’d ask to spot her, but she seems a little busy right now.” Leon stretched his arms across his chest, he was already in rather appropriate gear, tank top, basketball shorts, athletic shoes, basically just clothes to get sweaty in. “Anyway, what’s the plan Sami? Leg day? Arm day? I already got my cardio in...twice...ohhhh I get it now.” He laughed, finally understanding Nate’s quip at him.

”Well, I need to get myself relaxed for tonight, so I’m thinking of some light sparring, maybe see if one of these cage guys wants to go a round or two” Only Sami would find getting punched in the face as a way of releasing some tension. ”Leon why don’t you go get us all some drinks from the machine, I got to talk to Nate real quick” Cuban Yoda handed the golden retriever a few dollars and patted him on his ungodly firm butt. ”Now that shit just ain’t right...Nate, pick up the pads and square up, will ya?” he wrapped up his hands in some tape and cracked his neck. Some heavy stuff was about to happen and he didn’t just mean his punches.

“Oh I-” Nate started to complain, he wasn’t really here to work out, more so to just hang out and cheer his bro’s on while they did whatever they did in the gym. But as always he had a hard time saying no to Sami, so he picked up the pads that Sami had pointed to and stuck his hands inside of them.

Sami could feel some butterflies in his stomach, this was going to be one weird ass conversation. Sending Leon away wasn’t a necessity, he had nothing to hide but it would be easier if it was just the two of them and there was a lot of scantily clad, sweaty gym bunnies hanging around and no doubt they would all flock to Leon, buying Sami a little more time with his buddy. Once Nate was ready, the stocky boy raised his fists and began hitting the pads that his friend was holding.

As Sami swung at the pads Nate stumbled a little “Ok Sami, calm down you don’t have to break my hands…” he grinned. But as he saw the look on his friends face his eyebrows knitted together. “What’s going on?”

”Listen brother, I’m not going to fuck about with this, ok? I love you and I want to be honest with you. I think there’s something going on with Josie and me” Sami punctuated his words with some strong strokes to the training pads. ”I know how you feel about her and I wanted to get on this with you cos you’re my brother and it wouldn’t be right for me to snake you. There’s always been something you know but like high school, you know? We just click in a way. I’m not gonna do anything unless you’re good with it, ése”

There it was, the confirmation to the hunch Nate have had. The reason why Josie didn’t want to be with him in that way. She liked Sami… and he like her. “Oh-” was all he could say as Sami’s punches hit the pads. He didn’t really know how he felt about it, so he stayed quiet for a little while. “You know…” he said lowering the pads. “I’ll be honest” Nate took the pads of his hands and threw them back on the floor. “It’s an awkward situation, but I’m not going to be the one who comes between you and her.” he bit his lip in thought “If you feel that way for her… uh… go for it man.” he smiled at Sami shrugging his shoulders.

That went better than expected. Nate had always been one to wear his heart on his sleeve, it was one of the many reasons that Sami loved him. Here he was being the mature man he had grown into, a far cry from the tearful child that Sam had to pull out from under his duvet on many occasions. He was right though, this was an awkward situation and the guilt that burned inside of the young fighter's chest like a fresh case of heartburn from downing too many drinks was not disappearing any time soon. Still, Sami was not going to run away from this problem, he was going to face it straight on with the same bullheadedness that he was famous for. ”I love you brother, no matter what” He placed his hand on Nate’s shoulder and smiled. This was going to be a very new and very different chapter in their relationship and for once, Sami couldn’t see the future coming.

Like the goodest boy he was, Leon took Sami’s order without question. “Sure Papi!” The strapping young lad went about to the vending machine, cash in hand, unflinching even as Sami smacked his ass. To be fair, a near lifetime of slap ass was the usual jargon in a high schoolers locker environment, so Leon was practically unfazed as his butt rebounded the firm hand of his close friend. Approaching the device, he perused through it’s wares, a mixture of soda, gatorade, red bull, powerade (were those two even allowed to be in the same unit?). Despite the near dystopia of it all, Leon chose the gatorade, it was like that Brawndo stuff from that one movie, the one that was what plants craved, something about electricity? Humans craved what plants craved right? Which was electricity, so Leon found no reason to spend his adequately given money on such beverages.

As he gathered his things, ready to head back to his awaiting crew, a young filly approached him. “Well hey there kid, never seen you here before.” In front of him stood a young woman..well as young as was legally allowed, she was clearly older than Leon, but still appeared youthful and spry, “What brings a strapping young man like you into LV?” Somewhat confused, Leon had to turn and see who she meant, only realizing she meant him, “Oh...me? I’m just here with my friends, having a good time and getting to know the local scenery.”

“Didn’t realize the local scenery included a gym.”

“Well, I like to keep myself in shape, went on a couple of runs this morning,” he emphasized, flexing his legs a little, “But, I was more looking forward to work on my core and arms, y’know?” again emphasized as he once again took off his shirt to flex his muscles a little. Nothing too impressive to the average Adonis, but more than enough to swoo the lucky lady in front of him as she brushed uncontrollably ...that was until he heard an unsettling cry of anger.

“YO! WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!!”

‘What the fuck?’, Leon looked over as a rather heavily tatted man made his way over to him and his newfound friend. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?!” Confused, Leon looked around before eying the bottles in his hand, “Um...buying some drinks for my friends?”

“Oh really now?!?!” The man’s veins actually popped a little at that, “:and I suppose that included talking to my girl too?” To her credit, the young woman did try to pipe up, only to be shot down by the jackass beside her. To his credit, Leon tried to remain somewhat diplomatic, “Yo, man I was just trying to get some hydration for my buds, then I saw her and she was asking some questions about my routine, and I thought, I should demonstrate,” Leon emphasized this by flexing his calves again and puckering his abs and pecs to the gentleman.

“You think you’re fucking funny, dontcha?”

“I mean…” Leon didn’t really have a better response, he thought he was humorous if nothing else, but could this guy be asking for an act or something? “I did perform in my high school’s talent show, I don’t think they have any video recording but…”

“That’s it!” Before Leon could even react, the man began to swing his fist towards him

Hearing a rumble from down the hall Nathan swiveled around squinting to see if he could see what was going on. “You don’t think that…” he asked turning back to Sami “Big boy finds trouble anywhere so I think we should go check that out” he said walking towards the sound of the fight.

Scratching the back of his head, Sami let out a tremendous sigh. He couldn’t take these fucking kids anywhere. Following Nate down to the other side of the gym, the two boys came across their friend about to be pummelled by some juiced up toadie being goaded on by his peers. Within seconds, Sam pushed the steroid freak into the wall by the drinks machine and stood between him and Leon. The man was almost two of Sami (although that wasn’t very hard) but he has fought off worse odds. The juicer grimaced at the boy through broken teeth. “Fights not with you, homie unless you want seconds. The use of the word homie was the perfect turn of phrase to show off this idiot's racism. The perceived gang affiliation because of his race and tattoos was something Sami had dealt with for a long time and it was the best fuel to add to an already burning fire. ”I’m your huckleberry” He glanced back at his boys before throwing a heavy left hook into the side of the toothless wonders head. ”So much for staying out of trouble, go back to the hotel boys, I got this”

”Dios mío, estas mujeres serán mi muerte”

For four years, Sami had spent pretty much all of his free time solving the problems of his friends. When AJ got in trouble with...well pretty much everyone, Sami stood up for him. When Val locked herself in a closet as a sophomore having a panic attack, it was Sami that sat on the other side for three hours talking her down. He fed Chris and Nate, he held Josie, he worked on cars with Ivy and through all of that, he had barely anything of a life that he could call his own. He was so intrinsically linked with the Gearheads and the Misfits that a question like “Who really is Sami Alejandro?” wasn’t a shock anymore. Outside of a problem solver, who was he really? Not once did he complain, not once did he just say fuck it like a normal human being and go find better friends. He loved these damn idiots but this was his last hurrah, he was an outlaw going out his own way and he was for sure not going out listening to them bitch and complain.

”Leon? Sit the fuck down before you fall out of a window you big goon” The Cubano began to mix a few more drinks for his group and lay them out on the bar before bringing his attention to the triple threat of Ava, Emi and Josie. ”Here’s the long and short of it ladies. We are not in fucking high school anymore ok? All the drama needs to stop or be taken down a notch. Now I’m not gonna give you a speech about how it’s time to grow up and this will be the last time we’re all together or any of that breakfast club shit. Ok? I’m gonna make it simple, I’ve been dealing with this crap for years and I want a fucking break to actually enjoy myself. Cut the sass, stay the barbs, drink your fucking drinks and have a damn good fucking time!

Emotion from Sami was a rarity. He was always so quiet and subdued. When he spoke he spoke with a confidence and authority far beyond his eighteen years. This was different. He wasn’t yelling or shouting, he didn’t lose his temper but the tone of his words were strong and forceful, dripping in power. It was a sight to behold when Sami actually tried.

Josie’s comment of sharing a bed had not gone unnoticed and the idea of holding the pink haired pixie close to his chest in the dead of night was an idea that he was coming round to more every day. Turning around, he popped his phone into the speaker and began to play some music throughout the suite. Moving away from the bar, Sami made his way over to the couch he had claimed as his bed and collapsed into the thousand thread cushions. Holy hell that shift was soft. He took a sip from his delicious Cuban delicacy and looked over at the girls with a smile on his face, completely allowing any tension to dissolve and fade away.

”Now, let’s enjoy this place for all its worth, where to first?”
