TEAM RUTABAGA

Meryn stood frozen, staring at the portal. That… that had been incredible. Terrifying, sure but… Lily and Emma… She looked at the two girls, a dazed sort of wonder in her eyes. And Alex and Kelsier… the sort of guts it took to actually challenge that thing. Meryn was getting dangerously close to a smile as she looked at the people she was traveling with. They really were something, weren't they? Who knew the humdrum life in Enn could give life to something that spectacular? Maybe magic lived out here beyond the wall, but she wasn't so sure it didn't thrive in Enn either. Once again, Meryn felt the thrill of sprinting at a precipice, ready to jump and not knowing what awaited her at the bottom. Except this time, she was running along side these people instead of above them.

But then their guide spoke up and the spell was broken. Eyes shooting to Spook, she was hit with the very strong desire to throw something at him. Like a knife. Or a felidrake. Was… was he not going to explain any of that? He was just going to put all their lives in jeopardy and then carry on like it was no big deal? She could only stare at him incredulously as he plopped the two felidrakes into the portal.

After another moment of being infuriated by Spook, she snorted and threw her arms up – only to remember the injury in her side. Flinching, she pressed her bloody hand against her side, hoping to keep the other clean for as long as she could. The wound had started bleeding again from the force with which she'd ripped the bandage off, and flaky brown blood mixed with fresh crimson and the sticky blue paste Spook had offered earlier. Giving a small huff, Meryn turned on her heel and started walking. Someone needed to let that man who'd run off know that it was safe to come out.

Honestly, Meryn didn't blame him. She didn't know how she'd have reacted to that monster showing up in her face. She'd been a safe distance away, and even then she'd been scared senseless. All she'd manage to do was piss it off and make it target her while she contemplated how stupid she was. Her earlier wonder and amazement was dying down. What the others had done was incredible. What she'd done… perhaps she wasn't running along side them after all. With a small sigh she kept walking, slipping a hand into her bag. She yanked it out when something sharp cut into her fingers. Pausing, she looked down to see a very shaken, very agitated felidrake. She'd forgotten it was there. No wonder her bag was so heavy. Meryn sucked the dot of blood off her finger and rolled her eyes. So much for keeping her hand clean. She started walking again, looking around.

Finally she spotted him, hiding among the whistling statues. Meryn picked up her pace and reached, touching his arm. But then she heard a tinny feminine voice over the whistling. Confused, she looked for the source. Only to freeze when she saw a small, mechanical bird. It was talking.

Before the gym had been built, Lavaridge had been a small, struggling town. It was too hot and too hard to get to unless you could fly, and the hot springs hadn't been a strong enough incentive for most to brave Mount Chimney. The population was made up primarily of old families, too rooted down to leave after generations, and the elderly who made one final trip to settle down and retire in the quiet town and soak away years of aches and pains. But as more and more children grew up and moved away to the cities, the population steadily shrank. The gym had been a last ditch effort to save the town.

And amazingly, it'd worked. Trainers, young and old, were required to make the trek if they wanted a shot at the Pokemon League. Scaling Mount Chimney became a challenge people eagerly took on, the promise of a gym badge and the hot springs as reward pushing them forward. The cable car was built. The path down the mountain was better maintained and safer. The steady stream of new faces brought a fresh life to the town, and what once was seen as an isolated hamlet too bothersome to get to became a quaint, challenging oasis, steeped in tradition.

Terra had been born in Lavaridge. Her family had moved to Rustboro for work when she was still young. When the gym spot opened up three months ago, it'd just seemed… right. Somehow she'd landed the job, and now she found herself in the odd position of getting to know her home town again. Part of that was meeting everyone who lived there at least once.

Which was why she found herself walking through the quiet streets, a small paper with an address and name scribbled on it. The realtor had sent it to her as per her request (demand). Terra made her way, chin held high and eyes straight ahead. The few other people on the street cast glances at her, as though afraid they'd get in trouble if they were caught looking. Terra just ignored it. They were slowly growing used to her presence, but people were typically slow to warm up to her. Or the other way around.

After a few minutes she stood in front of the house – it was pretty obvious, what with the moving van parked in front of it, boxes in various states of being unloaded. Terra came to a stop a few feet away from a man and a Mankey carrying boxes in the house. She took her time looking him up and down. Glasses. Bookish. Clean, if a little sweaty from the work. Or the heat. An evolved pokemon meant he had enough experience with them, if he wasn't a trainer. Shifting her weight to the side, she slipped the paper in her back pocket and rested her hand on her hip.

"Kevin Reynolds," she called, her voice cutting through the air.
You wanna start or should I?

Artemis raised an eyebrow at the knight's back. Enthusiastic old codger, wasn't he? But then she paused when she watched him clamber up onto the platform – and the metal remained dull and lifeless. Scrunching her eyebrows together, she glanced up at him and then down to the metal again. Why wasn't it glowing like it did for her? She watched as he climbed up the tree, idly wondering at the sight of a rusty old knight scooting his way along the branches. All the while she took in his words, desperate for any clues to explain her new situation.

"Please be careful up there, Sir Neary," she called. He was the only resource she had. Wouldn't that just be grand if he fell and injured himself when she still had no clue as to where she was? "Have you ever seen such a tree before?"

Her eyes widened when he waved away some bizarre bat-monkey creature.

So chimeras were commonplace, based on his reaction. Ticking trees were not, but not so out of the ordinary as to be wonders. The runes did not glow for him.

Artemis looked back to the man when he called for her to stand under the lantern. She eyed the platform warily. But… he had a point. Gathering herself and clutching her staff just a bit tighter, she stepped up. Sure enough, the runes came to life, their glow mingling with the lantern's crimson light. Artemis stepped forward, trying not to look hesitant, until she was standing under the lantern, arms held out to catch it. Her staff sat upright, leaning against her shoulder.

"I'm ready."
pretty sure we're all just waiting on @skittles, who is likely busy with classes

so… at what point do we start moving forward again and let massa catch up when they get back?

Name:
– Terra Dang

About:
– Terra is the relatively new leader of Lavaridge Gym, and specializes in ground types. People in town find her… kinda scary, actually. Maybe it's the tattoos, the wardrobe, or the way she seems completely unimpressed with everything around her, but everywhere she goes people can't help but shy back, waiting for her disapproval. She has a little too much fun with her reputation. Even though she's new to town (and feels like she's in way over her head) she takes her job seriously and has already grown protective of the people living there and the trainers who come to see her.

Team:

@flamelord so obviously anything in the first post can be edited. same for the cs. as for more setting stuff, i'm working on the cs and decided on a ground type leader. not sure which town to put her in. obviously, any town with a gym works. i was leaning towards either petalburg or lavaridge, but really any gym is fine. it only really matters for where the story specifically takes place, and i assume we're gonna move around a bit once we get into it?

leading to my next question: do we want to eventually stray from the original plot to something more involved with rocket or the other groups or hoenn lore? i mean, the hidden past drama will only work for so long, but i guess we'll get there when we get there.
