Luigi Lama

Feyhollow Town

Lui plopped down on the forest floor, placing his violin case beside him and pushing his bag off his shoulder. It was dark and he was hungry – he could at least change one of those things.

Moving his bag so it was in his lap, he opened it up and started pulling out his snack: an assortment of colorful macarons, sweet and mouth watering. There was an odd little circle of orange rocks pointing up from between the leaves, outlining an area roughly the size of a dinner plate. It was peculiar how... uniform the rocks were, all evenly spaced in a perfect circles. What were those things he'd read about in the town's tourist pamphlet? Fairy circles? Lui thought they mostly formed with mushrooms, but maybe rocks happened too. How quaint.

Lui laid a small cloth on the ground in the circle and placed his container of macarons on top of it. The rocks erupted from the ground, scattering leaves to reveal the spiked rocks were all connected to each other by a smooth orange shell – a jaw. They weren't rocks at all. They were teeth.

Lui shrieked.

Whatever it was that had clamped its jaws shut like a trap seemed to be in the process of swallowing its prize, cloth and plastic and all. Lui had scuttled backwards after falling back on his butt, staring with wide horrified eyes. The creature's own beady ways stared back.

Too quickly, the pokemon finished eating its meal. It climbed out of the shallow pit it had apparently been lurking in under the fallen leaves to reveal it was mostly just a head – a bulbous orange monstrosity comprising almost entirely of a set of jaws, a comically small insect-like body trailing after it.

The jaw turned towards him.

Oh god. This is how I die.

Its jaw opened up and lunged for him. Lui let out a panicked, strangled sound as he tried to scurry back some more out of range. But the pokemon’s teeth landed on the bag in his lap. It pulled backwards and the bag fell to the ground, still trapped in its jaws.

Lui yelled helplessly and surged forward to grab his bag, resulting in a tug-of-war until a riiiiiiip echoed through the forest and the bag's contents scattered over the floor. Lui fell back on his rear again clutching a ruined scrap of cloth that had once been his bag. The pokemon was already starting to rummage through his belongings. Lui scrambled forward and grabbed the closest thing to him – the pokedex. The cherry-red pokeball had seemed to catch the pokemon's attention and it began clamping its teeth over it, leaving little indents of scratched red paint.

Lui, with a loss of what else to do, flipped open the pokedex and pointed it at the pokemon. His hands shook as he waited for the mechanical voice.

"Trapinch is a patient hunter. It digs an inescapable pit in a desert and waits for its prey to come tumbling down. This Pokémon can go a whole week without access to any water."

"Does this look like a desert to you, sir?!" His voice was shrill and panicked, cracking on the last syllable.

The Trapinch finally managed to fit the pokeball in its mouth and swallowed it down and a muffled click could be heard. In the next moment the Trapnch glowed red and its body seemed to be sucked into itself, disappearing in a flash. The dented pokeball fell to the floor, and gave a shake. Then another. And another.

A cheery ding! chimed in the night air.

He had somehow just caught his first pokemon.
@Dark Light if he's a rival it'd have to be one-sided. Lui's a nervous loser without a competitive bone in his body, and he'd have no idea what to do with a self-proclaimed rival. I can see lots of fun interactions.

For a fan, he... also wouldn't know what to do with that. It could be cute/funny if someone followed him around with stars in their eyes. This one also has lots of potential for fun.

But I mean you're the one who's going to be playing him so it's really whichever you prefer.
I find either of those ideas highly amusing. You know what gender yet?@Dark Light
@Dark Light well what kind of character are you making? That would play a role in shaping the relationship.
Before I get too deep in character creation, anyone wanna collab on a background?
Relative? Co-worker? Rival? Aquintence?

i'm game
First post is up! :3
It was gonna be longer but it's already starting to look like a wall of text, so I decided to break it up into parts. He should be getting his first pokemon next post.

Also my name is misspelled in the opening pic post, in the active characters section. It's the number zero, not the letter o.
Luigi Lama

Feyhollow Town

Lui was lost. It was dark, he was hungry, and he had no idea where he was. Lui was miserable.

The trouble had started that afternoon. It was his first day in Feyhollow, and it'd started out well enough; he'd bought lunch at a cafe (the most delectable pancakes he'd ever had, soft and light with a sweet almond sauce and butter – technically breakfast food, but it'd sounded so mouthwatering Lui hadn't been able to resist) and headed out to explore the sights and play music on a corner for tips.

He was kneeling down, putting his violin away and organizing his money in his wallet when he felt a shadow fall over him. Lui paused and glanced up to see a grinning man standing over him. Startled, Lui jumped and let out a small yelp. The man didn't react, just kept smiling.

They were still for a long, uncomfortable moment, Lui and the smiling man. He felt heat rising to his cheeks.

"Um..."

"Well, that was some fine music there, son!" the man cut him off. Lui jumped again, still on the ground next to his violin case.

"Y- um... yes. Thank you?" He was an older man, wiry hair already stark white. He was wearing a suit that was two sizes too big for him though it seemed expensive. Lui's eyes widened as he realized he recognized this man – he'd been on the corner opposite himself, shouting at onlookers and handing out pamphlets and little boxes, taking advantage of the crowd Lui's playing had drawn. "C-can I–"

"Well, a fine young man like yourself, I bet you get to travel with that there violin plenty!" Lui gave a tiny nod, wanting desperately to break eye contact with the man but frozen in his intense stare. "You ever consider pokemon?" Lui's eyebrows scrunched together. Consider like… having them? Thinking about them abstractly? The man didn't give him time to answer, though. "Well we at Poke Corp feel a responsibility to encourage people from all walks of life to enhance their lives with pokemon – you know all sorts of benefits come with coexistence with them. Extended life span, higher quality of life and happiness, more self confidence. A young man like you has lots to gain, don't you think?"

"Uh –"

"Well, to encourage people to get out and go train and use our pokemon related merchandise, we're handing out a free pokedex and your first pokeball! Quite a prize, don't you think? You might've seen me handing them out to people as you played your lovely music, and wouldn't it be a shame if I took advantage of your crowd without making sure you got something in return?" Lui blinked up at the man for a solid ten seconds before he realized the man was waiting for a response.

"Yes?"

"I wholeheartedly agree!"

And that had been that. After the exhausting conversation (monologue?) finished, Lui found himself one pokedex and pokeball richer.

He'd always had a passing interest in pokemon, but he'd never had opportunity to have one. His mother felt it'd be a waste of time that could be better spent practicing violin or doing homework. But now... well, maybe it was time for that interest to be indulged.

And so Lui had bought some snacks in case he got hungry and ventured out of town into the surrounding forest. There really was something wonderfully mystical about this place – how the dappled light misted through the trees, the way the leaves above seemed to sing with otherworldly voices. He'd been compelled to stop no less than four times to play his violin, accompanying the music of the forest. And while wild pokemon often made him nervous, Lui surprised himself by enjoying his time with them. He liked to point his pokedex at them and listen to the mechanical voice tell him their names and bits of trivia.

But as the shadows grew longer Lui decided that it was finally time to head back into town.

Except he didn't know how. He was well and truly lost.
Character's in the tab. I'll take care of the Pokedex/ball stuff in the opening post.
Name: Luigi "Lui" Lama
Age: 25
Starting Location: Feyhollow Town
Rank: Beginner
Organization:
Occupation: Violinist

Appearance:

Biography: Luigi Lama comes from a bustling metropolis, filled with so many faces that it's easy to miss his. He grew up an only child in a relatively average family – dad was a business man, mom stayed at home to give her son all the care and attention (she thought) he needed. Luigi was an average student at best and a stringy, uncoordinated beanpole of a boy, so academic and athletic excellence weren't options. And so, Mama Lama pushed him towards the arts. He wasn't particularly fond of violin, but with enough hours of practice ("encouraged" by his mother) Luigi found he was actually pretty good at it. Great, even.

Before long he was doing concerts, accompanying bands, and making a decent name for himself in the musical world. At least, as much of a name as a violinist could have. He started going by the stage name "Lui" (he is distinctly aware of what an unfortunate name "Luigi Lama" is… as were most of his classmates growing up) and gained a small, but devoted fanbase comprised mostly of teenaged girls to his bewilderment.

Recently he's seen an opportunity to escape his mother's care: Lui is going on tour. Well, that's what he told her anyway. In reality it's more like he's wandering from town to town, exploring and playing for money where he can. However much money he makes though, he always seems to be broke. If Lui has passion for anything, it's food. Delicious, expensive food. He'll spend more money than wise on a single meal and have barely enough left for a bottle of water after. Oh well. Such is the life of a traveling artist.

Personality: Lui's teenaged fanbase seems to have crafted a persona for him – quiet, solemn, thoughtful, mysterious… in reality he's just awkward. He was always a nervous boy, unsure of how to interact with others and too self-conscious to try. He's usually content to just do as he's told, relying on others' judgement rather than taking on the responsibility of making decisions himself. Lui's a people pleaser and rule follower. Deciding to take his show on the road was startlingly out of character, shocking anyone who knew him. He's still getting used to not having anyone to dictate his every move and call him out on every decision.
