Qrowdell Academy (magical school RP)

So I'm working on fleshing out the magic system, and I'm feeling myself plagued with anxiety, like "Why am I putting so much work into this? People are gonna be pushing the limits of it pretty much right away and I don't want to be constantly correcting people or asking them to fix issues in their posts. The stricter I make the system, the more work I'm going to have to put in to enforce it. I just want everyone to have fun and for this RP to be a zero-stress environment." Plus I've come down with bronchitis and feel like shit, LOL.

So, a lot of my ideas for a strict magic system are going to be reserved for my novels and I'm just gonna make it more freeform in this RP. We'll just say Qrowdell Academy is a school for the most gifted Magi in the Mortal Planes, so that everyone can feel free to play their power fantasies right away, and that also saves me the trouble of having to correct people and enforce a system. I will still monitor the narrative, of course, and may ask for corrections if plotholes develop. I'm scrapping my ideas for specific proficiency levels in various types of magic, and allowing everyone to be attuned to whatever types of magic they want. I'm removing any and all restrictions - other than keeping the narrative intact - and in doing so, saving myself the trouble of having to enforce any limitations.

Because I'm sick and this is a holiday week, the main thread still won't be up until Friday or possibly over the weekend, but once it does go live, I'm just going to have a few paragraphs explaining some basics and then we'll roll with it.

I'll be using live actor faceclaims for all my characters and NPCs, and probably 2D art for monsters and stuff, but everyone can feel free to use whatever they want, live action, anime, cartoons, 3D art, etc. Most of this will be in our imagination, after all :).

Also, I do want to clarify a few things for everyone, just in case it wasn't apparent in the intro post or the subsequent posts - while different planes may have different cultures and technologies, on Earth, it is modern day, let's say August of 2023 when they first go to Orientation. As stated in the intro post, the time of day at the Academy within it's sub-planar realm is synced with GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) at the Royal Observatory in London. As for the overall structure of this reality, here is an image that will help, though I'll define it further when the main thread goes up:



Think of this bubble as representing the Aetherscape, and think of the Elemental Planes as if it was cut into four quarter wedges like an apple. The galaxy swirling inside represents the many different Mortal Planes, which are like parallel universes co-existing. They are all spinning so fast that the speed in inconceivable to Mortals and from a quantum perspective, are technically sitting inside all four Elemental Planes at the same time. That motion is what keeps the balance between the elements in the Mortal Planes, and why all Magi are attuned to one of the Elemental Planes. The light in the center represents something I haven't discussed yet, so we'll just call it the Celestial Spark, a place where new souls pop into existence right before being born into a physical body. This cloud of divine light surrounds a black hole in the center of the Aetherscape that represents the Infernal Abyss, and together they act as the anchor for the Aetherscape and work with the Elemental Planes to maintain balance. The black space beyond is the Cosmic Void.

I just remembered I have a characters who’s a pyromancer blacksmith. Makes magic stuff using fire magic and enchanting, and have more creative energy than an entire mountain full of dwarves lol. Everything he owns is capable of spewing fire on its own because he’s like that, and it’s badass.

Friday (Early Afternoon), June 2nd, 2023

With blue skies and sunshine above, students all over the city prepared to begin their Summer vacation, the final day of school having finally arrived. For seniors, the graduation ceremonies wouldn’t occur until the following week, but classes would officially be out. Inside a large red brick building, people were filing into the auditorium as a group of speakers gathered on the stage, setting up microphones and a projector screen.

Standing by the main entrance doors, an older man in a brown suit and tie eyed the crowd frantically, becoming a bit anxious. His eyes lit up as he caught sight of a young girl with dark brown hair, waving her over to him.

“Camelia! Have you seen your brother?” He asked, sighing in frustration when she shrugged.

“I’m sorry, Principal White,” she said as she adjusted her bag. “I haven’t seen him since this morning.”

“Damn it, that little shit is up to something, I just know it!” he replied angrily, then frowned. “I’m sorry, Camelia, I shouldn’t have cursed in front of you. I’m just worried he’s going to embarrass me yet again, with members of Congress here no less! You know how many Hail Marys I’ve had to say because of his shenanigans? Too many! TOO MANY!” He stormed off to check empty classrooms.

Sully, what the hell are you planning this time? Cammy thought to herself as she sighed loudly. She then went to find a seat in the auditorium.

A young man with long brown hair leaning against a locker was suddenly pulled out of his thoughts as the principal rushed past, muttering angrily under his breath. What’s his problem? He thought to himself, then shook his head. A moment later, a few other students came up to him.

“Hey Kam, are you going to the party tonight?” they asked in hushed whispers. “I hear it’s going to be wild as fuck!”

“I’ve been hearing talk of it, but I dunno, it’s not really my thing…” he replied, but something told him he should be there. “Maybe I will…”

“Dude, you should!” another kid insisted. “Hope to see you there!”

“Okay, I’ll think about it,” Kamran added with a laugh as they all headed towards the auditorium.

As everyone was seated and the speakers began their prepared speeches, Principal White continued to spiral deeper into anxiety, just waiting for something to happen. When they started up the projector to play a series of videos for the students in attendance, they were instead greeted with an image that instantly made the principal’s heart drop.

“What’s up Harper Grove?!” Sully’s voice came booming over the speakers, as well as the intercoms throughout the entire school. “We are Rabid Trash Pandas! This is the cover of our new indie album, Heavenly Dumpsterfire! Check out our social media accounts for all the deets!”

“That little monster!” screamed Principal White, literally vibrating with rage. Just then, the image faded and it was a live video feed of the four band members set up in a room, instruments and all. “They’re in my office! They hacked the projector! Those slackers are so dead! Someone get that feed down!” He ran out into the hallway.

As people frantically rushed to cut power to the projector, Sully continued. “I imagine White is absolutely losing his shit right now! If they cut the feed, we’re also live on our Instagram! In honor of those corrupt political douchebags speaking today, we’d like to play our rendition of Fat Lip by Sum 41! Guys, hit it!” They started jamming out as most of the crowd cheered.

The music blared throughout the entire school, and White became increasingly livid as he rushed to his office. Upon arriving, he realized his door was locked and someone had swiped his keys. He looked through the window and screamed at the youths rocking out, slamming his fists against the glass. They ignored him and just kept playing.

“OPEN THIS DOOR RIGHT THIS INSTANT!!!” the old man shrieked as the school police officers came running up behind him. He then turned and ran the other direction.

“Sir, where are you going?” one asked.

“To the maintenance office to get the spare key! Those little punks are toast!”

Back in the auditorium, they finally shut off the projector, but the students yelled out, “Quick, head over to their Insta!” and everyone started pulling out their phones, much to the fury of the speakers.

Sully, Mom is gonna kill you… Cammy thought to herself as she facepalmed.

Interesting fellow, Kamran chuckled to himself.

Eventually, White was able to get into his office and demanded the teens exit into the hall. A bunch of students were waiting to cheer them on. “You guys! The stream was seen by thousands of people, even seniors at other schools around the city!” one explained.

“People are already reloading it up to YouTube with reactions! Your performance is bound to go viral!” proclaimed another.

Sully and his bandmates were quite pleased with themselves, until White started screaming again.

“That’s it! Enough! The four of you are done! DONE!” he exclaimed angrily. “You’re all expelled!”

“So what?” Sully scoffed. “It’s the last day of school. So you send us home a couple hours early? I sure do feel sufficiently punished, what about you guys? Ha!”

“Not just that!” the old man spat back. “The four of you are being trespassed from the school! That means no graduation ceremony for you! If you ever step foot on the campus again, you’re going to jail!”

The band members just glared at the principal, disappointed but not surprised.

“Whatever,” Sully threw up double birds and went to clean out what was left in his locker.

“Mom might just kill you for real this time,” Cammy said as she walked up to her brother. “White will no doubt have called her by the time you get home.”

“I guess it’s a good thing I won’t be there then,” he replied with a smirk as he shoved stuff into his bag.

“What do you mean?” she asked, taken aback.

“That ‘secret’ party is tonight. If I go home now, Mom will ground me for sure and I won’t be able to go,” he explained.

“Aren’t you always whining like, ‘you can’t ground me, I’m eighteen!’ and shit?” Cammy inquired in a mock imitation of him, grinning.

“Since when has that stopped her?” Sully laughed. “Not taking any chances. I’m gonna put my phone in airplane mode and chill at Nate’s house until the show. Are you gonna be there?”

“I suppose I should probably tag along to keep you out of trouble,” she chuckled. “I’ll meet you guys there.”

Friday (Late Evening/Early Night), June 2nd, 2023

As it neared 10:00PM, dozens of teens from multiple schools - and some friends and family of those - began crowding in front of a locked set of double doors, having parked their vehicles in a garage down the street. There were two guards who explained the host, Mr. Dude, would be out soon.

A few of the partygoers congratulated Sully and his band on their performance, and some of the reaction videos had already garnered hundreds of thousands of views. They were excited at the prospect of possibly getting a record deal out of it as well. Just then, the doors opened and a man wearing a yellow suit and green mask stepped out.

“How do?” he asked, using exaggerated, cartoon-like mannerisms and expressions.

“I am your esteemed host, Mr. Dude! Now you may be asking yourself,” he removed his hat as he gestured to his mask. “Why the green face? Well, let’s just say I have an invested interest in concealing my identity, considering the… escapades you lot might get up to tonight!”

He smiled wide at the crowd, revealing large, fake teeth. “Now, was I forgetting something? Hmmm…” He released an exaggerated yawn, then pulled out a stopwatch and gasped at it, throwing behind him. “That’s right! It’s party time! P-A-R-T-why? Cuz I gotta!”

“You should be ashamed of yourself!” one girl yelled out, who was booed by everyone else. “This is sinful! The Lord is watching you, sir!”

He just smirked and slipped his hat back on. “Oooh! Somebody stop me!” Everyone laughed and cheered.

Mr. Dude led them through a long hall and into a huge room set up like a nightclub.

“Food and beverages are in the corner over there! Everything is free! Help yourselves! Hey D.J., let’s rock this joint!”

Everyone started moving and dancing to the music, and Sully happened to lock eyes with a tanned surfer boy. He grinned and began slowly making his way in that general direction. Cammy was busy busting some moves, but Kamran sat at one of the tables, feeling a bit… off. Something was amiss here. He felt strange, but wasn’t sure if it was the party or something… else…

Sully is considerably intelligent and wise when he wants to be, but often suffers issues due to his sharp tongue and witty, sarcastic sense of humor. He just barely passed many of his classes, due to constant suspensions as a result of fights in school. His mother would often say: “Again, Sully?! Jesus Christ, if it wasn’t for that fucking mouth of yours, you wouldn’t get bullied so much!” To which he would reply something in the vein of: “But where would the fun be in that? Deprive people of this angelic voice? Oof. Sounds dreadful!”

Although he derives an immense amount of joy out of triggering religious bigots, fanatics, racists, fascists, so-called “alpha” males, and anyone else bearing what he considers “fragile little manbaby egos,” he also holds a deep sense of justice and equality and wants to see positive change in the world. He views his rebellious and reckless behavior as challenging what he perceives as a corrupt system, and has served stints in juvenile detention throughout his adolescent years for engaging in peaceful protests against police brutality, racism, bigotry, religious indoctrination, etc. His arrests during these events almost always resulted from police officers becoming offended by his remarks, and one time his family successfully sued the LAPD after officers had severely beaten and tased Sully during a protest when he was sixteen.

Although he views attraction regardless of gender, his shenanigans tended to draw attention primarily from his female peers. Girls always seemed to be fawning over him at underground punk shows or the cafeteria at school, and while he did cycle through a lot of girlfriends, he always treated them well.

Talents & Skills

Sully is a talented musician, providing songwriting, lead vocals, and rhythm guitar for his pop-punk band, the Rabid Trash Pandas. He has also developed a keen sense for creative writing, drawing, sketching, digital painting, and graphic design. He bears a decent understanding of science and technology, but his passion has always been more with the arts.

He grew up speaking both English and Italian, as much of his extended family still lives in Italy and they visit frequently. Additionally, through independent study and conversations with friends, he has become fluent in Japanese to read manga in its native form and watch anime without subtitles.

Sully keeps his body in fairly good shape, working out a few times a week. He has received some basic instruction in Taekwondo and self-defense, but never really pursued it beyond that despite being in constant fights. He often prefers to allow his attackers to hurt themselves when he dodges out of the way rather than throw a punch himself, if it can be helped. He will strike back, however, if he feels it’s his only option.

Faerie Powers

Sully can channel, project, and manipulate green Life Energy, which is converted from absorbed essences in his environment, such as solar radiation, ambient heat, and other natural power sources that have organic or nuclear roots. He can form blasts, spheres, waves, beams, and even vines made of green light, as well as channeling his energy into plantlife to accelerate and control its growth.

Biography

Sully was born fifteen minutes after his twin sister, Cammy, and raised with their older brother Teddy in the Harper Grove neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Their mother Sarah tried her best to provide her children a good life, but the kids’ father Reece spiraled deeper and deeper into alcoholism, drug addiction, and gambling as time went on. He seemed to have better control when they visited family in Italy, but always fell off the bandwagon again upon returning to L.A.

Eventually, Teddy followed in his father’s footsteps, and it wasn’t long until they were both serving long prison sentences for drug-related criminal charges. The twins were only fourteen when their brother and father were hauled away in handcuffs, and while Cammy made a point to visit them every week, Sully was furious and refused, claiming “Those fucking idiots chose drugs over US! Dad and Teddy are dead as far as I’m concerned!” His anger at them would ease considerably as he matured, but by age eighteen, he still hadn’t felt ready to re-open the lines of communication.

He participated in a number of protests throughout his teens (more info on that in the above sections), earning a reputation as a rebellious youth and troublemaker among the conservative and religious residents of their community. He had formulated a plan to top anything he had done before on the last day of school, when he knew a group of politicians were going to be speaking to students in the auditorium…

Cammy was every teacher’s favorite student, always kind, caring, compassionate, and absorbed knowledge like a sponge. She has a sense of justice and equality very similar to Sully, but is nowhere near as reckless or rebellious. She prefers to stay on peoples’ good sides as much as possible, which made her one of the most popular girls in school.

She can be charming and romantic, but has only dated a couple guys throughout high school, her studies always taking priority. Although she always tries to show kindness to everyone, she at times has a shorter temper with her brothers when they pull their reckless antics.

Talents & Skills

Cammy is a bright young woman with perfect grades and scholarship offers to multiple prestigious universities, where she intends to pursue a career in medicine. Additionally, she has a deep understanding of modern technology and is far more adept at computer programming and web design than her brothers.

Like Sully, she also speaks English and Italian, and maintains a similar workout routine as him. She continued studying Taekwondo for a couple of years after he quit, but didn’t stay long enough to reach the higher belt colors.

Faerie Powers

Cammy’s primary ability centers around channeling and manipulating purple electrical energy. She can form bolts, spheres, and blasts, as well as funnel lightning into items, such as projectiles or melee weapons. Additionally, she can supercharge her abilities by absorbing energy from an electrical power source.

Biography

For most of her first eighteen years of life, she frequently imagined herself being hailed as a hero some day by people everywhere, spreading joy and prosperity anywhere she stepped. Little did she know that fate would take her down a… darker path…

Kamran is kind and charming to most, but can be unapologetically ruthless to those he feels deserve such treatment. He shares many of the same values as Sully and Cammy, but unlike them, he will absolutely throw the first punch if a severe threat seems imminent. His mentor, Tamreon Erko, has reprimanded him in the past for resorting to direct violence prematurely, which he feels betrays the teachings of Jeet Kune Do.

Outside of combat training, he is quite the bibliophile, with a soft spot for ancient history and archeology pertaining to Pakistan and the surrounding area, where his mother’s side of the family hails from. He has an average understanding of modern technology, but prefers literary pursuits away from electronic screens. An exception to that is anything to do with Disney, who several members of the Watchers’ Guild have worked for over the years. A number of their fantasy movies and shows were inspired by material stored in the Qaarn Private Library, Kamran’s favorite being the Gummi Bears, which was based on a real family of bear faeries his father knew as a young boy.

When engaged in relationships, he has a penchant for being smooth and romantic. He does enjoy the company of beautiful women, but he finds intelligence a far greater factor in attraction than appearance alone. A supermodel could approach him, but if she can't stimulate him intellectually, chances are he'd lose interest very quickly.

Talents & Skills

Kamran is a polylinguist, speaking, reading, and writing at least a dozen languages fluently, and a passing knowledge of several others. Additionally, he is quite adept at martial arts despite his young age, having trained since infancy. His primary focus centers around Jeet Kune Do - the philosophy of Bruce Lee - which Kamran learned from his father’s former apprentice, Tamreon Erko. Adding to that, he also trained with a variety of melee weapons, including swords, staves, nunchaku, and spears.

Unlike most of his peers, he has actually known about the existence of faeries for years, as did his father before he went missing. They have a sizable private library in the family mansion that houses a great deal of knowledge about the occult and magical secrets of the world, which is frequented by other members of the secretive Watchers’ Guild, an organization of which Kamran’s father, Alistair Qaarn, was a member.

Faerie Powers

Kamran has the ability to move through and channel Shadow Energy from the Void, a parallel realm that sits in the dark space between the Mortal Plane and the Astral Plane. This allows him to utilize a form of teleportation, cloak himself from sight, and absorb Shadow Energy to amplify his physical capabilities.

Biography

Kamran was born into a mixed-race family, growing up in a large mansion in the Bowerstone Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, a hilly upscale district that sat adjacent to Harper Grove. His father Alistair was an Irish-American journalist, archeologist, and explorer with a focus on researching the occult and uncovering ancient magical secrets. His mother Yasmin was a Pakistani-American writer and archeologist who documented the adventures her family went on, portrayed them as fictional stories starring anthropomorphic dogs, and turned them into a series of bestselling young adult novels - The Chronicles of Captain Husk.

Qaarn Manor was also home to the Qaarn Private Library, a repository of all the knowledge Kamran’s family and their allies had gathered. His father was a member of the Watchers’ Guild, which monitored magical activity around the world. They were all sworn to secrecy, and so the boy could never talk to any of his friends about the truth of his family’s exploits.

Throughout his youth, he was trained in a variety of martial arts and fighting styles - primarily through the lens of Jeet Kune Do - by his father’s former apprentice, Tamreon Erko. The man often accompanied the boy anytime they traveled abroad, and was also seen as his protector and bodyguard.

When Kamran was fifteen, Alistair never returned from a Watchers conference in Paris, and as of 2023 has been missing for three years. Some considered foul play may have been involved, but ultimately the investigators came up empty-handed and the case was closed. That never sat well with Kamran, and to this day he is convinced there are bad actors within the Watchers’ Guild.

Previously, he had attended classes at Briarstead Academy, but due to a major fire that destroyed much of the building, everyone had to transfer elsewhere for their senior year. Many of his classmates relocated to other private campuses, but he chose Harper Grove High School because it was closer to his home.

As graduation came closer, Kamran began to overhear discreet, hushed chatter about a secret, no-rules party. It would apparently be held in an abandoned industrial plaza at 10:00PM on the last day of school, and it seemed quite a few people would be going. Normally, he would not attend such an event, but he had this persistent nagging feeling that he should be there. Little did he know what fate had in store for him…
