Hi. Someone needs to do something about the quality of the crayons at restaurants. The color doesn't even stick to the menu. How am I supposed to compete with a child with these?

The Crow's Nest Β· Early Morning
___________________________________________________________________________________________

Akaia entered shortly after but refused to greet either of the men or meet their eyes. Although the silence wasn't unusual, the Sidhe was very clearly unlike herself and instead, seemed particularly downtrodden and unkempt. Her hair was disheveled. Her eyes red and sunken with bags forming underneath. Her clothing, dark jeans and a simple top she typically only wore while out, was dirty as if she had been out. A Strange thing considering there were no missions the day previous and she had not been on a scouting run. Not to mention it was still the early hours of the day. Everyone was barely up but it was obvious she'd been awake for a while.

She moved rather slowly, turning immediately after entering the room to find a spot on the far side against the wall. Cradled in her arms was a pot with soil that looked to have been freshly packed and watered. As she stood there waiting for the others to arrive, she continued to stare into it as she held it against her chest.

Book One.
347 AG. All of Ba Sing Se prepares for the centennial celebration of the end of the 'Great War', a short but bloody campaign led by the Republic to bring an end to the 'Bender Threat'. In the wake of that war, the walled city remains the last surviving stronghold on a planet marred by generations of conflict. However, despite this, its citizens have enjoyed a lasting peace, one that is all that many have ever known. Strict regulation and a zero-tolerance policy against all Benders have seen to the near extinction of the once proud people. So removed have they become that many within the walls lead lives having never met one. The history itself has become muddled and what is widely accepted as the truth about Benders leaves a disposition that remains disagreeable bordering on cruel, and rightly so. However, with the world now free of their influence, life has been allowed to flourish and spirits remain high.

There are those who question this truth, however. Those that look beyond the walls at the world left behind and imagine what might lay in wait to be rediscovered. Those who hear whispers in empty rooms or see lights dancing in the dark. A warm breeze on cold nights, courage in uncertainty or are gifted the kindness of a stranger. Like the memory of some long forgotten dream, they know another world once existed full of life and color. Of many people from many nations in harmony with one another. In harmony with the spirits and they with them. There are those who know of what once was and in secret, dare to ask the question, "Where is the Avatar?".
Game.
Welcome to my interest check! Out of context, I know the above flavor text can read a little confusing so let me briefly explain the setting that this game takes place in. 347 AG is roughly 100 years after Korra's time and in that time, the world of Avatar has changed drastically. Of note, after a devastating war that left much of the world in ruins, Benders have become extremely rare and there is currently no known Avatar. Ba Sing Se, where our story begins, is the last city on Earth. It is currently occupied by The Republic, formerly of Republic City. The wasteland beyond its walls is a mostly empty and dry landscape dotted with cities lying derelict and abandoned. It is roamed day and night by strange fauna.

We will be focusing our narrative on individuals who discover they have the potential to bend when very few can and when doing so is outlawed. They must learn to cope with their powers, embrace and master them or discard and forget them, and finally, find out what happened to the Avatar. If this sounds like your cup of tea and you'd like to familiarize yourself with the story of the world leading up to our game, you can read the provided history and timeline below. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to leave them here or in my DMs. I know the information provided is light.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
History.
In the time between Korra's triumphs and her death, technology would progress in leaps and bounds. The discovery of spirit energy once siphoned from spirit vines opened a whole new horizon for technological advancement during what was once an industrial age. Varrick, who was able to reverse engineer Kuvira's machine, refined the process of harvesting that energy and its respective uses ballooned. He unceremoniously dubbed the new source of energy "Synergy". Satomobile Industries turned out the modern car, vehicles with engines that ran purely on synergy. The airship turned into the first spaceship and simple railcars became bullet trains allowing for quick transportation around Republic City. Varrick would go on to design smaller versions of Kuvira's cannon, giving birth to the first man-portable plasma emitting weapon. However, not wanting to further upset the fragile balance of the spirit and physical worlds, he would eventually abandon these designs. It was in truth Korra's last request, her fear being that these innovations would be the fuel for the fires of another great war.

And so a century would pass and Korra's legend would come to a close. The spirit of the Avatar would reincarnate and unto the world would be birthed a new hero. At least at the time, that was the hope.

After ten years, The Great Panic began. A tumultuous and confusing time when the people of the world searched for the Avatar and found none. In this panic, the citizens of the world clung to a simple truth: the last Avatar to disappear was Aang and soon after his disappearance, an entire nation of Benders engulfed the world in a war a century long. Out of this truth was born a fear and from this fear, action. Conflict broke out among the Bending nations and their leaders began to butt heads in an attempt to discover the secrets the others were hiding. The Earth Kingdom received the worst of it as did its sister city Zaofu. The Avatar was, after all, in line to reincarnate as a native Earth bender. Small raids and infiltration by the other nations were constant, most of which served as taunts to lure the Earth Kingdom and her armies outside its impervious walls. Ba Sing Se began preparations to reply in kind. The Republic, formerly Republic City, had by now grown into its own nation of benders and non-benders alike. Concerned for their own safety, the President and his table of advisers moved to take action... and not just for themselves. Fearful that the entire world would not only submerge itself in another war but would also never be free of it, they agreed it necessary to eliminate the only viable threat. They believed strongly that Benders had been and always were the cause of all great conflicts past and present.

The Great War. A conflict that would be remembered by all. The Republic moved swiftly. Reviving old designs by the late Varrick, they began production on new and improved synergy weapons. Firearms made of platinum capable of emitting small sporadic beams of volatile spirit energy. They provided the most obvious of benefits: giving those without the gift to bend a way to fight back against Benders. Armed with both their new found technology and a thorough training in Chi Blocking, The Republic marched on Zoafu, their first target. The most prominent and powerful Earth benders resided in the city and as expected, the city proved the most difficult to occupy. However, fresh and in full force, their march was near unstoppable and the citizens of Zoafu found their power over earth and metal helpless against the weapons of the Republic. After its occupation, Zoafu was used as a base of operations for the Republic to wage their campaign against Ba Sing Se. Rallying the other nations to their cause was an easy task. They already believed the Earth Kingdom was hiding the new Avatar and their past with Republic City placed them at odds with everyone else.

The siege that followed was rather quick. Synergy cannons were used to punch large holes in the earthen walls while continuous assault from the air softened up defenses for those on the ground. From there, a combined assault comprised of Fire and Water nation and Republic forces stormed the capital. It was the first time in the history of the world that Ba Sing Se had been successfully invaded.

What followed in the wake of Ba Sing Se's conquest set the stage for the state of the world as it is now. While playing at searching for the Avatar, the Republic made preparations for the second phase of their war, with again, a little help from a long passed Varrick. With the only people capable of defending themselves against conventional firearms out of the way, the Republic turned their guns around to face the rest of the world and began the Great Cleanse. Bombs were dropped and millions were slaughtered. The Fire and Water nation were the first to go with their capitals reduced to dust. The Air temples and their people were similarly destroyed when their diplomacy helped only to postpone the inevitable. The Air nomads, still a budding nation, were once again chased into oblivion.

At the end of the war, the Republic made Ba Sing Se its permanent home and effectively the last city on Earth. The rest of the world lay beaten and scarred. A kind of synergy radiation blanketed much of the landscape around the former capitals of each nation and the war's effects on the world drained it of its vitality. Flora and fauna began to die out, soil became infertile and many sources of water were left undrinkable. Despite this, the Republic set to work rebuilding, erecting the walls it tore down and shutting their sins out with the world they destroyed. The nation grew once more, stronger now without the threat of the bender or another war.

Today the Republic stands alone in its strength and its people grow fat and happy. Or at least those of the Inner Ring do. Technology has continued to develop. Artificial intelligence exists. Wearable technology is widespread and prosthetic enhancement is available although still in its early stages and limited to those with power or those who are better connected in the Underground. The population continues to grow and most remain complacent in their perceived safety, content to live a life confined in walls and eat themselves full of whatever propaganda is fed to them. Others however suffer from a world whose resources cannot match the demand. There are more mouths to feed than there is food. Money is collected and kept in the gilded vaults of the central most ring, leaving the rest to vie for scraps or drown in destitution. Drug use, crime and death is rampant in the crowded and polluted streets of the Lower Ring and those seeking shelter beyond the walls are cut off from most infrastructures of support and are at the mercy of an angry, vengeful world.

Rule is held by one King Wu VI who is advised by a room of select individuals, and his word is enforced by the Republic Security Force. Bending continues to be outlawed and remains punishable by death to this day. The world outside the city remains a mystery to most. An unforgiving place rumored to be home to fiends or no longer habitable after the war. Other rumors persist of a place where Benders can live free. Far past the horizon in the distance. If a person could cross the barren deserts and brave the nightmares that call it home, they could find it.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Vincent had just finished belting out a song about being β€˜halfway there’ and β€˜living on a prayer’. Halfway where? He didn’t know. Was he off-key? He couldn’t remember ever hearing the song, so on top of being dreadfully off-key, most of the song was also mumbled to the cadence of the melody. Did he care? Of course not, since he was having a blast.

Regardless of how one might perceive Vincent’s karaoke performance, Cerise was cheering him on, a big smile on her face. After all, the karaoke night would have turned into a quiet dessert-eating night if it wasn’t for Vincent. As far as Cerise was concerned, karaoke wasn’t really about being good at it anyways. β€œHehe, keep it up Vincent.” she said cheerfully when Akaia suddenly called out to her.

β€œShare!”

The Sidhe had entered the room shortly after Ajax had his peek, finally giving in to the curiosity that was the sound of music. Inside, she found Vincent and Cerise there waiting, with one on the mic and the other listening… or being forced to. Of course with little else to do in the now, there wasn't much of a choice. Still, seeing two of the commune finding comfort where they could brought some small amount of joy to the her and whatever confusion or troubles were hanging over her like a cloud was quickly forgotten. There was comfort to be found here for Akaia as well and she was already pulling her into a hug.

β€œOh, β€˜Kaia! Great, you’re finally here.” As Akaia squeezed her from behind, Cerise accompanied her words with a return hug in kind, beaming at Akaia. Vincent overheard as well and turned to see the two holding each other. He grinned and held out the microphone as he said, β€œBe my guest. I just finished up, anyway!”

Akaia looked at him confused. She tried to line up what Vincent had said to something or anything that made sense but was failing miserably. It was Cerise, however, who laughed, quickly realizing that Vincent seemed to have misunderstood Akaia’s words as a request for the mic. She decided to play along with it. β€œHow about it, β€˜Kaia? You wanna try singing?”

Akaia turned to Cerise, still confused. β€œA-are you sure?” She asked.

β€œOf course! Go for it, β€˜Kaia! I’m sure it’ll be fun. Right, Vincent?” Cerise nodded at Vincent as she said so.

β€œI had a blast and you heard how good my singing is,” He said with a laugh as he placed the microphone into Akaia’s hand. He then flopped down onto the couch next to Cerise, his hands laced behind his head as he added, β€œIf I can have that much fun with my god-awful singing, then I’m sure you’ll have a great time, since I’m sure you can’t be any worse at it than me!”

A smile lit up Akaia's face and she nodded excitedly at Vincent. An opportunity had just presented itself and one that she'd been waiting specifically for for some time. "Okay!" She exclaimed as she swung around the chair. Licorice, sensing his perch was soon to forget his existence, hopped off of Akaia's shoulder and onto the couch to find somewhere safer to rest. He shuffled closer to the two and found a spot in a crook between two seat cushions on the other side of Cerise. He received a head pat for his troubles.

As Akaia began shuffling through the available songs looking for a specific one, she paused momentarily and turned to Cerise as well. "Close your eyes!"

β€œClose my eyes?" Cerise gave her a nod and a playful giggle. "Okay then. My, I wonder what song it is you’re going to pick~” She didn't have to wait long.

The song started quiet with light percussion and guitar and a few seconds later was joined by Akaia. "Shaaaaare-eeee.... Share-ee baby! Shaaaaare-eeee.... Share-ee baby! Shaaaaaaaaaaaaare-eee baaaaaby..." As she sang, she began hopping to the rhythm, bouncing lightly on the balls of her feet and turning to face Cerise. In the Sidhe's pale eyes, there was some visible embarrassment. The acknowledgement that there was no comparison to her voice and the one she was trying to match, but perfect emulation was out of the question. For the past few years, the girl on the couch had been coaching Akaia to use her own voice, not just in speech but also in song. They'd spent many an evening together at the piano practicing, both for the joy Cerise found at the keys and also for the lessons learned by Akaia. Of those lessons, one was significantly more eye opening than the others: Singing and speaking were not the same. At least for her, one was significantly more difficult, but it was also yet another form of communication and she was ever looking for more ways to do just that. It was for this reason she took to it and another reason why she was so determined to practice. Long ago, Akaia had determined that she was going to use her own voice around Cerise and that meant now, in front of her best friend and another face she'd only just barely met. She knew despite practice that she was far from any degree of skilled and whatever was coming out of her mouth would be rather tone-deaf. However, it wouldn't be enough to drown out the joy that overwhelmed her from being able to be herself around Cerise. The smile across her lips that constantly threatened to turn into a giggle and the happiness in her eyes was enough to bury whatever embarrassment she felt.

She turned to the screen again when she began forgetting the lyrics, the force behind her song dropping when she had to read. The bounce in her step however never left. "Whyyy dooon't yoou come oooout, to my twist party... where the bright moon shines... we'll dance the night away, I'm gonna make you mi-Aah!" Akaia's arm flinched violently as if she were recoiling from pain and the mic fell out of her hand. Looking down at her palm, she noticed that despite the pain feeling very real, there were no cuts or lesions. All that remained was a persistent tingling under the skin and a cloud hanging over her she thought had left her that tasted of frustration and annoyance.

She turned to look at the door.

Akaia stared at the closed door for a moment, considering emotions as they bubbled from a well in her gut. Worry, relief and then acknowledgement at her exclusion. She was no doctor. She was no Revenant. Most of all, she was no brother to Amelia. All things considered, there was little she could do in that room besides be another body and another body in their space served little purpose beyond being in the way. And so she remained outside, content with waiting for word or a clue on the girl's situation and doing little else besides staring.

However, as she stood there studying the door in the quiet she was left in, music from the Great Room found her again. A muted, playful melody tumbling from the doorway and telling of the more jovial atmosphere on the other side. It sounded like a promise. A promise of warmth and laughter following a week's worth of isolation and a day's worth of Lost that didn't take much convincing to sell. The thought that Cerise might be there as well was just icing on the cake and a smile that brightened her face.

Just as quickly as the door had been shut was it forgotten as Akaia turned instead toward the Great Room. She moved to join the others, but just as she was about to reach the door, a series of clucks distracted her and turned her around. From above, a familiar black crow appeared in the rafters with its head tilted slightly to the side and a pair of deep red eyes regarding her with a wild curiosity. Then, as if it'd found the answer to a question not asked, it suddenly opened its beak.

"[Change]."

"Change?" But before she was given an answer, Licorice leapt from his perch and dove into the hallway. "...Change?" She called out again, quickly following after him. "What change?" Around the corner and at the other end of the hall, the crow had landed on the ground and was already hopping its way into what had once been Ionna's room, clucking at her to follow. "Yes. Little bird gone. Girl is gone. Another friend... another friend change." But as she entered the room herself, she was met with a far less empty situation than she had imagined. Already replacing what little furnishings Ionna had requested for her room were a myriad of instruments and equipment that Akaia immediately recognized as belonging to Lysandra. All of it seemed rather complicated and quite fragile and after taking only a single step inside, she immediately stopped and gave the bird a sharp, high-pitched whistle. Licorice froze, hopped in a small circle and then jumped onto her shoulder.

"Lee-saw stuff." She said in a whisper as if speaking too loud would knock something over. "Fragile." Looking around, she began memorizing the various objects and their position in the room, filling out a map of the space in her mind's eye and finding what safe paths she could take between everything if she had to. Of course, it was always difficult for her to distinguish exactly what was what when it came to the importance of a 'thing' that belonged to Lysandra. There was just too much. Too many shapes. Too many colors. Too many pipes and boxes and buttons and names too complicated for her to remember. Instead, Akaia learned early on that it was simply easier to assume that touching anything and everything would break it. Better yet, not being in the room when Lysandra was also not in the room was much preferred.

She wasted no time turning to leave, but as she did, Licorice began bobbing his head in the opposite direction as if urging her to explore further. She would not.

"[No]." She clucked back.

"[Change]." It repeated.

"Yes change. Lee-saw room change."

"[Mistle]." To which Akaia perked up. She turned around again, this time scanning the room for the familiar flora she had dug up only the day before. Given how sparse the room was when compared to others lived in for more than just a day, it didn't take her long to pick through the surroundings and find a glow peeking out from behind some unmarked uninteresting piece of machine. Very carefully, but with a deft agility natural to her, Akaia wove herself around objects without touching them until she was standing in front of the plant. Now, much closer to the mistle and in an environment much safer than the last, she gave the thing a proper once over and almost immediately noticed what Licorice had before. She furrowed her brow.

"Are you... feeling better?" She asked the plant, staring at it through a lens of confusion. With a careful hand, she pressed a finger against the underside of one of the glowing leaves and traced its stem. It was brighter than it had been before, a very obvious sign of its improved health beyond the fact that it was also no longer drooping. There was also a bit of resistance to her touch as if somehow, in so short a time it had found its strength again. "Lee-saw fix you?"

Minutes later, Akaia was back in front of Desmond's door, chewing her lips and rubbing her hands together with a look of confusion across her face. Licorice sat on her shoulder just as confused and neither of them were paying much attention to the music.
