#024B30 .....|..... outfit .....|..... main hall

Fiona had to suppress a laugh, her face locked in an almost rictus grin as she saw the slight flicker in the other girl's eyes as she took in Nelly. Her outfit choice for the day had certainly been provoking a range of reactions from what she’d glimpsed so far. It was the little crease in her forehead that almost sent Fiona over the edge; there was just something quite amusing about the shock to the senses that Nelly often caused others. But it was gone almost as soon as it had appeared, and Fiona half-wondered if she’d imagined it.

"No." The one-word response felt slightly dismissive, but her repulsed expression finally caused Fiona’s own to break into a true grin as she chuckled at the other girl’s distaste. Clearly, she was not a fan of whiskey, perhaps not even anything with even a whiff of alcoholic content to it in the slightest. Even as Fiona had made the offer, she hadn’t expected the other girl to accept, given she already had a cuppa in front of her, which she continued to slowly sip from in the lengthening silence that followed their initial greeting.

Given that they’d intruded upon her solitude, Fiona had no desire to push, as she’d prefer to be left be had the situation been flipped on its head. So, she instead turned her focus to her tray of food; steak and ale pie, swede and potato mash, roast carrots, with a mountain of chips, all of which was drenched in gravy and vinegar that she tucked into with gusto.

"Maylisse." Something about the accent struck Fiona as familiar, but she couldn’t quite place it with just the two words she’d been provided with so far, but it was different from others she’d heard around camp.

Fiona had zoned out a little from her surroundings while she’d been eating, not having noticed how famished she was in the wake of their time in the arena. So, she’d missed anything that had been said by either of the others, but the sound of Maylisse’s fork clinking on the table suddenly brought her back to reality. She could almost picture how her mother would deal with her lapse in focus and felt an involuntary twitch at the memories of her vindictive punishments.

"And your parentage? " The girl's tone was cold, impersonal and undeniably familiar to her now she’d heard more of it. "I find it useful to know who I am sharing a table with. In the broader sense." She couldn’t read much from Maylisse; she was too controlled for the most part, but the way she looked at them felt like she was weighing them up, measuring to see if they would be found wanting. Which was what Fiona supposed they all ought to be doing, and she did it enough herself.

Well, when she wasn’t several bottles deep, wondering why she kept waking up in the morning, in any case.

So, while the question had been clearly directed at Nelly before herself, there was a fierce desire bubbling up to answer it with a challenge, even if that would be far from helpful, let alone friendly. But a little rivalry, friendly or not, felt suddenly warranted.

Fiona couldn’t help herself and jumped in with an answer herself first, though an unhelpful one at that. "You first, English. Me granda would have me hide if I gave out anything for free to one of ya, not without a fight.” Her grin had returned while she was speaking, and lasted throughout till when she’d finished and scrunched up her face into one of mock seriousness. She then gave the other girl a wink before her crooked smile returned.

"As fer sharing a table, we all be bastards here together, aren’t we, aye?” She picked up her whiskey, drained it and poured herself another while she waited for a response.

#024B30 .....|..... outfit .....|..... Duke’s Old Cabin -> Main Hall .....|..... #F1724B .....|..... outfit

Fiona was lost in her grief and misery; the sudden abandonment by Duke had sent her spiralling into the darker parts of her psyche. Her eyes were tightly shut while she muttered angrily, half curses at Duke and half casting, blaming herself for why he left in the first place. Her body was shaking while her arms were wrapped tightly it as if she was trying crush herself or just keep everything from falling to pieces.
She barely even recognised the gentle touch of her friend on her shoulder as Nelly's fingers brushed against Fiona's own. However, as soon as their skin made contact, her head snapped back and up, eyes wide and unseeing as the cabin vanished from her view.

Fiona was in a forest, breathing in the smell of night, earth and trees all around her.

They were dark and foreboding, as if they were closing in by the moment to suffocate her. She can feel herself falling as she trips on the roots, tumbles and keeps on falling. The trees don’t feel as if they were ever there.

Suddenly, she’s lost in darkness, surrounded by stars that flicker. Sounds of clinking cutlery, sloshing of drinks and roaring laughter.

The trees rush back to fill the space, only their branches whip against her now, thickening and stretching out till she’s surrounded with dense hedges that are both too close and too far away as if she’s lost in a maze.

The harder she tries to focus, the fuzzier the details become till she’s tripping again.
This time, she’s splayed across a body lying on the grass, eyes staring unblinking at the starless sky.
The laughter returns, deafening her as voices shout to one another in a language that hurts to try to understand.

There are bodies in the hedges, their lifeblood dripping down onto the churned earth; her throat is filled with the cloying scent of death. She’s kneeling in the soaked earth, her hands pressed against Nelly’s belly, trying to save her innards.

She blinks, and the bodies are screaming, their flesh burns, and the hedges burn with them.
Blinks again, and now she’s the one lying in the blood-soaked mud with Nelly trying to stop her intestines from spilling out.
The air is filled with moaning, screaming, and crying.

The sounds of clinking cutlery, sloshing drinks and roaring laughter that have only gotten louder and louder suddenly stop.
And she locks eyes with a shadowy figure holding a golden goblet.

Eyes as cold as the space between stars.
Eyes that freeze the blood in her veins.
Eyes that make her wish she was dead.

"I am here Fi." Nelly's voice pierced through Fiona's fragmented vision, dragging her unceremoniously back to reality.

"Jesus, fecking Christ!” Fiona cried out as she jerked away from Nelly as if she’d been shocked, scrambling to her feet in an almost blind panic. Her eyes were wild, unblinking, as they darted around the room as if she didn’t know where she was or even who Nelly was, for that matter. The look on Fiona’s face of uncertainty and what was verging on terror began to soften the longer she looked at her friend.

"He’s gone Nell, just left.” With a sigh of defeat, she just deflated. Her body crumpled as she sank to her knees while fresh tears cascaded down her cheeks.

Nelly was rarely shocked herself, but when Fiona cried out, Nelly literally stumbled back and rolled onto her back on instinct. She almost screamed herself, but managed not to. She waited for Fi to calm down a bit before approaching her again and this time she started rubbing her back.

”Did he leave any messages at least?”

She had no clue on why Duke left. And to leave without saying goodbye, yeah that was in bad taste. Still this wouldn’t be the first time someone left in such a way. Cherise left similarly as well as Liam and Theo. The only one who said goodbye before leaving was Ethan.
Fiona sank further onto her haunches as she leaned against Nelly's hand, relaxing a little at her friend's comforting gesture, even as she hugged herself. There was a twinge of guilt at her initial reaction to Nelly’s arrival, mixed in with the hazy dread that her vision had signalled and the aching loss of Duke.

"Stay vigilant, he says, gone back ta his true home, his ‘real’ family. Told us ta look after camp.” Her words are derisive and venomous, even as her cheeks are stained with fresh tears of sorrow. "Left a note on the door. T’over there...” She waved dismissively towards where the crumpled note lay on the cabin floor, where she’d discarded it earlier before falling into silence for a few moments as she shifted a little uneasily. "Sorry fer afore, gave me a fright…”
She went quiet again and looked down, seemingly wrestling with some inner turmoil before speaking softly. "Don’t know what I saw, not exactly,” she paused and tried not to flinch as those eyes burned in her mind, making her bite her tongue against what she wanted to blurt out before she swallowed and continued.

"But it weren’t good Nell. I can’t be losing you an all, not with Duke gone. Other’s gone too, so.” Fiona released herself from her self-imposed hug and let her arms fall down into her lap, her hands twisting together before she spoke again, her voice barely a whisper.. "I found Rae, that night…”

Nelly took a deep breath at that last statement. A lot had happened that night. Maybe it was because she had been in danger herself in the past, but she was used to feeling fear, so she got used to managing it. Like when Fiona found her cabin that night and ended up passing out and Nelly remembered feeling fear for her when that huge serpent appeared. Instead of freezing though, she didn’t think, just acted on instinct to save Fiona. Sure she got hurt in the process and ended up suffering a nice amount of blood loss, but she didn’t regret it and knew she’d do it again in a heartbeat. However, she would make sure she survived such an act again. She didn’t know that Fiona had been the one to find Rae though. At one point during the night they got separated when Fiona went off to fight something else.
”I have never seen someone I know die before. I can’t imagine what that was like. I know I can’t promise you I’ll be safe 100% of the time, but I will do my darn best to stay alive. It’s why I carry an EpiPen at all times,”pulling the item out of the armband she had on her upper arm.

She remembered that feeling of dying as a kid. There was no way to describe it without feeling it yourself. Maybe that’s why she did her best to live her life to the fullest, because she knew that life was fleeting.

"Better you do, Nell, ‘cause I ain’t carrying you to hospital if you’ve got to use that thing, half the reason I wanted Duke round was fer the lifting.” Fiona was sounding more jovial as she joked with her friend, but it felt a little strained, as she was clearly deflecting the pain from the loss of their friend and the potential fear of losing another.

”You just better make sure you take care of yourself too Fi. I wouldn’t want anything else happening to you too. Rest assured I definitely won’t leave this place either. My dad would also give me an earful since he’s been demanding I come here for over a year now. Ironic, he wanted me to come here for my own safety. Considering all that’s happened here, even before Pandora’s box, I’ll admit, I wonder why he thinks it’s safer here than out there with humans.”

She remembered Iliana telling her how she never wanted to live around humans anymore due to what she saw in Iliana’s trial. Nelly personally thought Iliana was being too harsh on humans, but she wasn’t bound to tell her otherwise because the blonde could get emotional for that.

"Ya da sound’s like mine, always had eyes in the back o’his head so he did, but he wer all proud at whatever mischief we got up ta.” Fiona had relaxed more with them, just sitting there in each other's company to the point that she was about to lean her head back to rest on Nelly’s shoulder before she caught herself, paranoid at the thought of their skin touching again.

"My mother's gifts. They’re just curses. ‘Powerful words leave deep marks’ is what me Granda always said about it, ‘cause I could get others to do what I want, out I want really. Got me step-mum to hang herself in front of me once, can’t do it twice so, her voice was pitching higher and becoming more manic as the past trauma rushed out to mix with more recent pain.

"But I couldn’t get Rae to stop bleeding, couldn’t make her live as I held her in me arms and screamed at her to live. I did’nae even know her, and I miss the lass.” Fiona lifted her hands and ground her palms into her eye sockets, as if trying to grind the pain out as fresh tears poured out and her body shook as it was wracked with sobs. "You’ll not be rid of me anytime soon, an a’ll take any wi’me who tries to end either o’us” her accent had thickened as she’d let her walls down so her mumbled words to Nelly were becoming harder to make out in between her gasps for air, as she continued to cry, broken and vulnerable with the one person she trusted without reservation.

When Fiona placed her head on her shoulder, Nelly automatically wrapped her arm around her shoulder in comfort. It looked like she was starting to calm down a bit, considering she started talking about her dad.

”I could never get anything past my mom. Ironic, both of my parents are sharp as knives, yet I have some catching up to do. I notice things at times, but I am nothing compared to them or others in this camp.”

Nelly didn’t know what it was like to have the ability to influence others. It had to be a burden to have if you didn’t like that kind of ability. Definitely a skill someone could take advantage of. She wondered if Lochlan showed the same restraint as Fi. She listened very closely though when her friend talked about Rae though and unconsciously started rubbing her shoulder. She stayed silent as Fiona cried.
After a few more minutes she spoke up again.

”I don’t know if this will help, but at least she’s not suffering anymore right? After we separated, I bumped into Iliana, who had broken her knee in the conflict. I can’t even remember much after that, but I was out of it for a few days. It was then I learned how we lost and who left. I think the best we can do now is learn from what happened and be prepared for what may come next.”
Fiona took several deep, long breaths as the tears finally dried up. She tilted her head up and gave Nelly a weak smile, "yeah, not sufferin’ so. She’s well out of it.” She pulled away slightly as she lifted her head fully off the other girl's shoulder, and dislodged herself from her friend's hug before standing unsteadily on her feet. She quickly rubbed at her cheeks to clear away her tears, even though her eyes were still red-ringed, raw and glistening. Giving her throat a rough clear she pulled out her flask from her pocket, drained it and hid it again with a sigh of relief.

Bending down, she offered her hand to Nelly to help her up, "I were gonna say let’s have a proper breakfast, but it’s gotta be lunch now. Let’s gan down the main hall, shall we?”

Glad to see Fi doing a bit better, Nelly placed her hand in hers and allowed her to pull her up. At the mention of lunch, her stomach let out a loud noise. Nelly laughed in embarrassment.

”Hehe, there’s your answer. I could eat a whole mountain of food like that one dude did the other night. I don’t know who he is, but his name is either Elias or Theron since he was in Trinity and Daniel’s group. By the way, you did a great job in your assessment! I was cheering for you the whole time. I do feel bad for those who had to redo the course again. I’ll be curious what the next few assessments will be over.” she said as she put her extra clothing back on.

Fiona smiled, feeling her cheeks burn a little at the unexpected compliment. She’d spent so long before her time at camp either manipulating others to survive in the world or slipping through the shadows and cracks between their lives that she honestly didn’t know how to react to genuine friendship at times.

"Yeah, I cheered fer ya an all. You did a right good job o’ that course. I did feel sorry for Wes, though, poor bastard.” Shaking her head, with a bemused smile on her face, she turned towards Nelly as they made to leave the cabin. "Not a bleedin’ clue what River’s got fer us next. If it’s right bad, we’ll knock him out, do a runner, eh?” She was grinning at her own joke, while her tone left it uncertain if she was being serious or not.

Nelly laughed at that.

”I would have had a much better time if I was at 100%, but hey I don’t regret the fun I had last night and I knew training was going to start today too. Still, Mason gave me a run for my money. I know it’s not a race, but I didn’t want to lose to him. I know powers weren’t allowed, but I am still Hermes’ daughter, and got a rep to uphold. You know who I felt bad for, Blair. That poor girl, bless her heart. Personally, I hope we get to show Rivers our powers. They are a part of us after all. I can’t wait to see what everyone else can do. And hey if River gives us a hard time, and if we knock him, we better make sure we sprint for the hills haha.”

With that she followed Fiona outside.

Just as Fiona was stepping over the threshold into the cold air, she muttered, "bollocks”, to herself before darting back inside and scooping up the crumpled note that Duke had left. The tape was torn and useless, but she went to the kitchen bench in the cabin, flattened it out, and made sure it was legible before rejoining Nelly outside so they could start walking towards the main hall. "Case anyone comes looking for him”, she mumbled sheepishly.

Nelly nodded her head.

”Darn shame neither Andy or Daniel aren’t here. They could make that note into pristine condition again.
Theo wouldn’t be the last person to leave camp, but at least he left a note.

While they trudged through the snow, Fiona was meandering sideways so she could kick up the fluffy top layer to watch it spiral in the air and grinning ear to ear, even as her boots, jeans and eventually her socks were becoming wetter. "I used ta live for days like this when I was a kid. Snows were fewer every year; it were special.”

Nelly was quick to respond.

”I don’t know if it ever snowed in Louisiana, but I wasn’t there a lot growing up either because of my mom’s job. Summers are brutal though with all that humidity. Of course it’s nothing compared to a rainforest. I am glad I can adapt to any sort of climate.”

Finally making it to the Main Hall, Nelly walked with her friend to the food location where they both picked up trays and loaded them with food. There were plenty of people here. Nelly considered eating with just Fiona, but she saw someone eating alone. She wondered if the person wanted to be by herself. She recognized her from the first group and finished third behind Andy and Silas. After getting her lunch, Nelly turned to Fiona.

”There’s someone sitting alone there. Is it okay if we join her? Or do you just want to eat together alone since there are options to do that.

Fiona looked over to where the girl was sitting with what looked like a cup of steaming hot tea in front of her. Honestly, she looked like she’d much rather be left alone in much the same way that Fiona didn’t particularly feel up to being sociable at the moment, even if she was far more in control of herself since her earlier breakdown. On the other hand, though, the thought of having Nelly thrust upon an unsuspecting stranger lost in their own world had a certain appeal. And while she’d never turn away at a chance to stick up for her friend nor wish ill on her, she did hope that the newcomer wouldn’t react too badly, or she’d need to make sure she apologised to Nelly.

"Aye, sure, I’ll grab mysel a chair since she’s only got the one going spare”

Nelly nodded. The person at the table looked intimidating, but that never stopped Nelly before. Still she approached the new camper slowly and waited for her to look at her. Nelly smiled before talking.

”Hello, I am Nelly, short for Penelope. My friend and I were hoping to sit here. I hope you don’t mind. I just like meeting new people. You did great out there today.” she said before putting her tray down and started taking off her extra clothing, her workout gear making her stand out as always.

Fiona watched as Nelly headed over to join the other girl before she went to pick up a chair for herself, which while trying to carry her tray at the same time proved to be far too awkward; so she instead settled for balancing the tray on one arm, doing her best not to spill her glass of apple juice while just nosily and noticeably dragging the chair across the hall to where Nelly was now sat.

It was only once she’d put the tray down, and was swinging the seat round to join them, that her internal monologue ran through the alternative of balancing the tray on the chair. The only outward indication of this realisation was the slight shrug of her shoulders accompanied by a defeated muttering under her breath, "oh, Bollocks”

After Fiona was seated at the table with them, she gave the new girl half a smile along with a nod in greeting before introducing herself, "Hey, I’m Fiona.”

She then reached under the table and pulled out a bottle of whiskey from one of the shadows, then poured a small helping into the second of the two glasses she had resting on her tray before looking around the table.

"Sorry, did either o’you want some? Forgot me manners.” She asked the pair, half-jokingly, given that it’s barely the middle of the day, even if she’s been drinking herself since sunup.

#B300B3 .....|..... training outfit .....|..... camp -> arena .....|..... #86A8AD .....|..... outfit .....|..... arena

As Veronica re-entered the arena, she could see that River was currently talking with another pair of newcomers to the camp, so she hesitated a little about approaching them. However, when she’d stepped out of the arena, the sudden drop in temperature reminded her that she’d left her jacket in the arena. So she gingerly went over to the bench that she’d been sitting on with Heath and Sofia, and pulled her jacket back on, rubbing her arms to get a little warmth back into them. After she turned round and spotted that the other two girls were already heading towards the arena exit, she made her way over to River.

She reached him just in time to hear him grumbling into his hands in an exasperated tone, which caused her to giggle as she moved into his field of view. "Fuck me," Despite her dishevelled appearance, skin still glistening with sweat, and clear signs of exhaustion, the lopsided grin she gave River was breathtaking.

”Dinner first, leader boy.” Her words were playful, and while she was teasing him a little because she’d enjoyed seeing him speechless, she was only half playing. Maybe less than half if she was being honest with herself. Though her disappointment at finding that Lochlan had already gone by the time she'd finished her pushups was certainly boosting her confidence, out of spite if nothing else, and it was more fear of how far she’d take things than a lack of experience that made her hesitant.

River had barely bounced back from his previous conversation being bombarded with questions and judgements from both sides. His gaze was more fixed on the small ring of sand around his feet rather than the people running the course or finishing push ups in front of him. But then he saw it, movement out of the corner of his eyes, another presence demanding his attention. He drew in a deep breath, doing his best to fake a welcoming smile as he looked up.

And he was faced with her...

"Fuck me," he muttered under his breath, too quiet for her to hear. River immediately forced his gaze to focus elsewhere… like a small puddle of sweat left behind by someone in the dirt. Gross, unhygienic, and probably smelly. Perfect.

But even with his attention elsewhere, her words still buzzed past the fog that clouded his mind when she was around. Her voice was cool silk on a hot day, beckoning him to give her… everything. But he didn’t. He counted, ran through the obstacle course mentally, and replayed his kiss with Anissa… anything. That was until the weight and meaning behind her words hit him, pulling him from his mental gymnastics and back to the present. "I—What?" He gave her a sidelong gaze, which he immediately broke and shifted toward… Nope, he’ll just close his eyes. It was safer that way.

”You’re cute when you’re flustered, you know.” She said while an amused laugh burst from her lips as she tried not to lose her nerve. She knew how she must look as she rubbed her dirt-covered hands together, feeling uncomfortable in her skin, but knowing even at her lowest she could befuddle their leader was an unbelievable high.

”I was saying, take me to dinner first, maybe a show before any of that?” She leant forward till she was a foot or two away from his face before reaching up and tapping him on the nose, ”boop, why are your eyes closed, River?” There was a small, and growing part of her that thought she might be pushing a little too far and her nerve was starting to waver. ”And um, have you ever seen a musical? Those are my kind of show.”

River cleared his throat, muscles in his forearms and hands tensing as he laced his fingers together and squeezed until his knuckles went white. "I guess that would make sense," he responded. After all, there had to be some reason Anissa liked being around him and it certainly wasn’t because he was charming. And then this Aphrodite girl… She obviously enjoyed making him flustered, which made it all worse. He held his ground through gritted teeth and his feet firmly in the sand, but it was like his mind, body and heart were at war. It was very inconvenient… and uncomfortable.

His eyes reflexively snapped open when felt the light touch to his nose. His face scrunched, brows creased, and his entire body lurched backwards an inch or two when he noticed her closeness. River rubbed his nose aggressively like it could erase the memory of the brief touch, or mask the smell of her… whatever Aphrodite bullshit that was flooding his nostrils. "Because your allure is distracting," he confessed honestly, a little too honestly… even for him. He crossed his arms, like closing himself off would somehow strengthen the mental barrier he tried to lay brick by brick.

Veronica’s mask slipped for a moment at his honesty, as her bravado began to ebb away slowly.

"In person? I—uh, no. My mom likes the movie Grease though." Why did he answer that? Why was he talking? He should stop talking. River grimaced and contemplated closing his eyes again, but worried about a second boop or how she’d escalate to steal his attention a second time.

She nodded as she acknowledged what he’d said about his mother, weighing up her response ”Good choice, though not one of my favourites. At least you didn’t say Cats.” She beamed up at him, and laughing softly, more to herself really ”It's a classic sure, but also a fever dream and the movie is best just left forgotten. I’ll have to think of a musical for us to watch together, what do you say?” The more she talked about her favourite subject, the less focused she was on the diminishing confidence in her flirting, but despite that, she still felt a little bit guilty at seeing the effect she was having on River, even as she enjoyed watching him squirm.

Veronica took two steps back and shook her head, looking down at her feet sheepishly before speaking again. Her voice was quieter and a lot less honeyed. ”I have that effect on everyone, very much a distraction. It's just so intoxicating knowing that my very existence can bring most people to their knees; it’s an addictive lure to know that people would do almost anything to bask in your glow.” She sighed and tilted her head up and to the side to look lopsidedly back at River again.

”And, you know what else? You could fall in love with me or in ‘lust’ with me and burn down everything else that matters to you as you try to gain my approval, but you’re in love with my powers, not with me. It’s not real. I can’t turn this off, not fully; it’s always there, digging its claws into your brain and rewriting it to be mine. I can’t risk falling for anyone because what they feel for me isn’t there, and it’ll fade once I’m out of their life. But, yet I'm the one who ends up with a broken heart.”

Once she’d finished bemoaning her ‘gift’ her body sagged and she just hugged herself tightly, feeling self-conscious at her own honesty before flicking one hand up to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear. ”I only came over to check in after I finished my do-over, I didn’t mean to put this on you, sorry. And sorry if I made you uncomfortable. Just... sorry.”

River’s brain stalled when she mentioned wanting to watch a musical together. His mind was very much made up… No. Hell no. Because one, musicals were boring and that sounded like a terrible way to spend two hours, and two, this girl—did she even say her name?—was flirting… or at least that’s what he thought she might be doing. And wasn’t Anissa. And while him and Anissa were… well, whatever they were. He definitely wasn’t dumb enough to humor spending time alone with another girl, especially not a daughter of Aphrodite. Now if Anissa asked him to watch a musical—but she didn’t and she wasn’t here and this was his problem to sort out.

"I’m… not really a musical type person," he replied while running his hands along his thighs.

He exhaled deeply like he was finally able to breathe when she took a couple steps back. Then her voice shifted like he caught her red handed, kind of bashful and quiet. River’s face contorted a little confused, mostly uncomfortable as she started monologuing about the struggles of being her particular breed of demigod. He couldn’t really relate to her frustrations but it all just… kinda sounded like a lack of control of her powers or something. She should probably work on that.

"That’s uh… rough." Ok, so… River wasn’t the best at consoling, especially when it was someone he had known for the better part of five minutes. He didn’t really know how to handle that information or what to say. "I guess it’s good you’re here then. You know, to learn how to control your powers." Probably not really what she wanted to hear but… yeah, well he was trying.

"But uh… yeah," he continued while motioning toward the course generally. "Good job with the push ups. You didn’t have to check in when you were done. But thanks."

Veronica had gone through a range of conflicting emotions during their conversation, with her initial intrusion having meant to be a playful tease that she’d taken a little too far. But the boy had been cute and there was an appealing charm to watching him flustered, and at a loss for words.

However, his dismissal of her honesty stung more than she’d be prepared to admit, even if he hadn’t meant it to. She couldn’t say what it was she’d actually expected from him, though perhaps not what she’d gotten. He was meant to be their leader after all. Though other than being in charge of them, what did her personal problems really matter so long as she completed whatever tasks he laid in front of them all? He was here to lead them not console or counsel them.

With a sharp intake of breath, she felt herself go rigid as she processed his response, her eyes growing cold before she responded to his last sentence. ”Thank you, I’ll try not to bother you next time when I inevitably fail due to a lack of control.” She knew how she sounded, she could practically taste the ice in her throat, and despite that she just felt guilty for taking out her hurt on River in the first place.

She half attempted to try and infuse her next words with some joviality so as not to leave on a sour note without much success ”It’s a shame about the musicals; you don’t know what you’re missing. See you tomorrow, River.”

As soon as his name left her lips, she turned and strode purposefully away from their new leader, keeping her posture straight and unbowed even as she knew her self-doubt was eroding what sliver remained of her confidence.

River had no clue how to respond to… well to any of that. He sort of just sat there, mouth agape with furrowed brows and a very confused expression. To be fair, he knew he could be a bit dense sometimes, but what did she expect from him? She came up to him, flirted—presumably—and then trauma dumped? Or whatever you’d call that. And then got all weird when his response wasn’t what she wanted. What was he supposed to do? Hug her? Tell her ‘I’m sure you’ll find love someday’? He didn’t know a thing about her and wasn’t the type to give empty sympathies.

It all gave him whiplash, like just as he was getting a grip on the flirting and how to ignore it or skirt around it, then… boom, here are my woes. River knew that being a leader meant discipline and people not liking him, but he didn’t sign up to be a therapist. Hell, he could barely keep his own shit straight, let alone give someone else advice or a shoulder to cry on. There was a part of him that felt like he should apologize… but for what?

His face was still contorted, still very much confused, but he raised a hand anyway and gave a weak wave to her retreating form.

"Yeah, alright… See ya?"

Veronica refused to look back as she left the arena for a second time. didn’t want to show any more weakness in front of what she’d already decided was her least favourite son of Poseidon, though even as she thought it, she felt queasy. She’d liked Nick, but she hadn’t really known him, just as she barely knew River either, so it was hardly a fair comparison on the unfair burden she’d laid at his feet. And she felt sick at ranking him below, simply out of anger. Part of her growing frustration was that she knew she was being unreasonable, but she also refused to view their interaction rationally, as that knowledge only made her more annoyed. She was angry with River, even if he didn’t deserve it, but she was furious with herself. And, not for the first time, hating her mother for sending her here in the first place.

As she made her way out into the chilled air beyond the arena, she stomped aimlessly through the snow as if taking out her anger on the powered piles would improve her mood. Her footsteps took her vaguely towards the armory and practice range, as she thought smashing something more substantial might work better. But even as she did so, muttering and berating herself for how she’d acted with River, her aching muscles twinged painfully as if to remind her what she’d spent her morning doing.

The cold air was starting to bite the longer she meandered without any real direction in mind, looping in circles as she remained undecided on her destination. Her options were mostly rejoining her friends at Heath’s Cabin or going to the main hall for food, but at the moment, she didn’t want to be around others. Her own cabin, while tempting, wasn’t really a choice as it would take her near her friends, and Veronica didn’t want to see the hurt in their eyes if they saw her avoiding them. Her conversation with River had left her feeling like a petulant child, even though her struggles were genuine despite how it clearly looked and sounded to those on the outside.

While perhaps an odd choice, she thought as she gently pushed open the door to the stable, it was one away from people for the moment, or so she hoped. She hadn’t been around that many animals growing up, since while others in her family had pets, she hadn’t been allowed any herself. Her cousins had taken classes on horse riding, of course, which she’d been forced to watch from the sidelines on more than one occasion, so while she had no experience riding them, she’d been around them enough to find their presence reassuring.

After closing the door behind her, she wiped away the tears of frustration that sprinkled her cheeks, then leaned back against it, breathing a sigh of relief.

Veronica was thankful for Sofia’s encouragement when she’d returned to where they were sitting and had given her a warm smile before she’d all but collapsed. And even though she’d responded a little back to Iliana when the girl had magically appeared with medicine to ease her pain, she was still exhausted and too out of breath to join in much of the conversation that followed.

"Thank you everyone. I know training sucks, but I appreciate the drive and determination, especially from those who struggled. I know none of you give a shit what I have to say and want to get out of here, so I’m just gonna cut the bullshit."

Veronica pushed herself back up into a sitting position on the bench as she listened to their new leader as he ran through their times. She’d known she had been slower than the others in her group, but she’d finished the course and was proud of herself for having done that at least. Even so, hearing that she was so far behind everyone else’s time was disheartening.

"Anyone who finished in under fifteen minutes is excused for the rest of the day." Veronica heard the first part and felt her brows furrow as she thought what that meant for the rest of them, but she got her answer barely a moment later. "For everyone that remains, you will run the course a second time." She felt as if her stomach had fallen out, as her breath quickened as she teetered on the edge of a panic attack at the thought of having to make another run at the course "You won’t be timed, so you can complete it at your leisure. It isn’t about speed, but practice, learning, and muscle memory. Powers are still prohibited, but you’re welcome to help each other."

She just sat there, barely listening to the last part of River’s speech, just shaking her head slowly and muttering “oh no” under her breath and fighting back tears of absolute exhaustion and frustration. ”It is a rough course, but you made it!” The words from Sofia still echoed inside her head, and while they were still encouraging, they rang a little hollow in hindsight now that River had given out such harsh punishment for those who’d fallen behind in time. Though as bad as she felt for herself, she knew it was likely hitting the others who’d failed as well, and she looked around the arena, glancing first at her brother, whom she felt the most sorry for, as he should have been much higher up if it wasn’t for his missing arm.

There was a look of dejected exhaustion shared by all of those required to make another attempt, though as each of them fought through that initial reaction, it seemed as if they became partially revitalised by the sheer grim determination not to give their new leader the satisfaction of watching them fail.

”It looks like you have to go again, Veronica... ” She could hear the sorriness in her friend's voice, and she was glad her friend didn’t have to do it again, but the company would have been nice.

"Veronica, if it is okay with you, I think I will stay until you are one with your second course." Sofia then turned to Leo, "what about you Leo? Are you going to stay?"”

"Hmmm, probably not, and I think I am going to go soon.” Though it did dampen her spirits a little that he was just leaving them, Veronica could hardly blame her new acquaintance, especially since he’d clearly aced the course without any issues. And it wasn’t as if there was any reason he should stay to offer her support, so she was getting upset in her head for no reason. Even so, it was just another thing running around her head that she didn’t need, and her heightened emotional state from the exhaustion and daunting task ahead wasn’t helping.

”So how do you all feel about River so far?” Leo had asked of them while he was gathering up his gear and making ready to leave the arena.

”Thank you so much, Sofia,” she smiled and nodded in acceptance towards the other girl. ”It does mean a lot to have the support because that course may be the death of me after a second time. Still better than falling through a tree though...” She gave Sofia a half-hearted grin, but as she unsteadily got to her feet, every muscle screamed out in protest to the point that she could feel herself crumbling, and she hadn’t even started the course over again.

”Too early to tell for me, but he does mean everything he said, so that's in his favor, that he hasn't lied yet. One of my abilities is to detect lies.”

As she listened to Heath’s comment on their new leader, it brought forth a mildly maniacal giggle before she wearily added her own views. ”Clearly, he’s a ruthless tyrant who wants us broken...” she looked round at each of them before grimacing as if to show she didn’t mean what she’d said. ”He seems to be trying his best, and camp is supposed to help us survive who or what we are.”

Heath picked that moment to chime in with what he believed was support for his sister, but instead only served to incense her given her reaction as a chill wind whipped around the group before sharply falling off.

"I don't think so. I may have done terribly on this course, but I don't need a babysitter. If I need help, I'll ask for it. Best of luck Veronica.” Veronica was a little awed by Iliana’s quite literal cold response to Heath’s offer.

”Good Luck, Iliana, see you at the finish line.” She called out after her friend, feeling a little embarrassed for the siblings, though more so by Heath’s slightly overbearingly helpful nature. She knew her friend's brother meant well, but she also knew that it was a little smothering, and at the moment, there was a lot of tension and heightened emotions.

”Thanks Heath, I appreciate the offer, but,” she paused for a moment, her eyes darting to Iliana as she confidently strode away before continuing ”um. You don’t need to apologise, for Iliana, she just needs to do this on her own, I think, like without any help. Especially from her brother...”

Veronica gave him a sympathetic shrug, knowing he was only trying to help but knowing it hadn’t. She walked down towards the arena floor, her voice lifting softly into song as she broke out into a verse from Les Misérables with the final line perking her up as she steeled herself for the course ahead of her. ”Even the darkest night will end, and the sun will rise.”

Her head turned suddenly at the sound of the whistle, which was followed by River giving them another option to running the course. "If you don’t wish to run the course a second time, I’ll also accept 30 push ups." Veronica could feel herself sagging in relief, letting go of a breath she hadn’t fully realised she’d been holding. Her body was burning and aching even with Iliana’s ointment. Everything was still blurring with pain, so the mere thought of having to run the course again was making her just wish she could give up and collapse onto the floor. So, while the push-ups wouldn’t be that much better, it was a definite improvement, and the option existing at all helped to keep her moving out from the stands over to the middle of the arena.

She could see that Wes was already well into his set, and while River was meant to be watching their renewed attempts, his focus had been distracted by another of the new arrivals who was actively talking with him.

”Wes has got this and he’s an arm short, you can do this ‘ronica.” The last part of her sentence changed into a more drawn-out and lyrical note, which brought a smile to her lips as she continued to hum the rest of the tune that she’d brought to mind. She lay down and steadied her breathing before doing the best push-ups she could manage, though they took her far longer than they had her brother, who had already gotten up and left before she was even halfway done. By the time she’d finished the full thirty, it was all she could do to simply lie on her side and keep breathing as the sweat poured down her face.

"Thank you everyone. I know training sucks, but I appreciate the drive and determination, especially from those who struggled. I know none of you give a shit what I have to say and want to get out of here, so I’m just gonna cut the bullshit."

She looked up and over at River when he started talking, but after the last line, she scoffed a little and muttered that he was "waffling too much fer that.”. Even so, she was curious to see what a few of their times were.

Fiona let out a snort as she listened to her brother placing effectively joint fifth above the rest of the camp; clearly, he was far more capable than she’d assumed. She’d known her own time wasn’t too bad either, if not quite as good, so while it still rankled to be middle group, this kind of course was not something she was used to. Either way, she couldn’t help smiling when she heard Nelly’s time, chuckling to herself, hearing her friend had just got in ahead of her; something to work on to make sure she wasn’t behind the daughter of Hermes next time.

As the list got longer in timings, with Anissa’s name being called out and only Blair’s remaining from their little group, Fiona was feeling a little uneasy for her brother’s sister. She knew herself that she’d not paid enough attention to how everyone else had done on their course, and she’d likely feel her mother's wrath for that mistake eventually, but what she had seen of Blair’s attempt was uncomfortable to the degree of it being rough on the other girl. She was glad to see that another of the new arrivals had camp that helped her afterwards, as it looked as if the daughter of Athena likely would be in far worse state otherwise. So, when the time was finally announced, it felt like another blow against her after her arduous attempt at the course.

Though her thoughts were jumbled a little when she heard River only mentioning Baxter’s absence, whoever he was, though during her glances around the arena had failed to see the irksome barkeep from the night before, so he was as likely a face to the name as any she could summon. No, her main concern was the omission of Duke from the roster entirely, to the point where she almost missed what River said after he finished with their times.

"Anyone who finished in under fifteen minutes is excused for the rest of the day." Fiona stood, thankful to be free and moved to start making her way down from the stands during the brief pause. "For everyone that remains, you will run the course a second time." She was already a couple of steps down towards the arena floor when she registered what the caveat of their freedom was, causing her to turn back towards Lochlan, Blair and Anissa. "You won’t be timed, so you can complete it at your leisure. It isn’t about speed, but practice, learning, and muscle memory. Powers are still prohibited, but you’re welcome to help each other."

Fiona let out a sharp whistle. "Christ, that’s shite for yer Blair.” She shrugged apologetically in the other girl's direction, unsure what, if anything more, she could really say since she was clearly pissed off at their new leader. ”See you’s after.” She gave the three a two-fingered salute with her middle and index fingers before turning and jogging out of the arena.

She knew she should have said more to them or maybe stayed through Blair’s second attempt, or checked in with Nelly, wherever she’d gotten to, but she only really had one thing she needed to do right now. And that was to find out where Duke was and why he wasn’t there for training. Her steps quickened once she’d made it back into the open air of the camp, and it wasn’t long before her pace had already broken out into a run.

It was only once she’d gotten up to a fair speed that she realised that might not have been the best plan given the mix of freshly falling snow, ice and slurry from the mix of temperatures over the past day. And then it didn’t become an issue till she reached Duke’s Cabin, which was almost comical in that she half-grabbed, half-crashed into the supports outside as she skidded to a halt. Which caused her to grumble a little as she stretched her arms to ease some of the tension from the jolt.

Then she saw the note that was pinned to the door of the cabin.

“Something is happening in my true home. I have to go. Don't know when or if I'll be back. Look after camp. Stay vigilant”

"No.” She whispered softly to herself, her head shaking ever so slightly as she read it again. "No. No.” And again, and again, her hand reaching up to trace the words on the note. "No. No, you—You haven’t.” She closed her eyes for a moment, feeling the soft sting of wet tears at their corners in the chilled air. Her fingers clenched suddenly around the note, crushing it as she swore "feck, no. No!”

She moved to hammer on the door, hoping that she’s not too late and he’s still here, wishing that if she brays loud enough, he’ll hear her. Except as her fist connects for the first knock on the door, it swings open, and the surge of energy from her anger and sorrow carries her across the threshold and tumbling into an empty room; far different from when she last stood inside. The cabin is soulless and untouched as if no one had ever set foot in it since it was built.

"You cowardly bastard.” She shouted at the plain wooden walls, while her eyes darted around the room, looking either for signs of life or even anything she could break or smash in her frustration. But there was nothing; no furniture, no decoration, nothing to show that Duke had ever existed, let alone been one of her only friends.

Letting out a cry of anguish, she just crumpled and slumped down against one of the walls, not caring about the pain of the hard floor, instead using it to dull the ache inside of her.

"You just left me here...”

She knew she was being selfish and stupid and that she had no claim on Duke save that he was her friend and she had few enough that she could hardly afford to lose any. But there she stayed, alone in the dimly lit darkness of an abandoned cabin with her arms wrapped around her as she cried over her loss all the same.

"Good morning everyone. If it wasn't already obvious, I am River, your new leader… And son of Poseidon, if that matters."

When it was Sofia’s turn to go, she wished her new friend the best of luck and cheered them on a little, if perhaps quietly at any rate. And when it was their turn to go, Veronica got up and followed Leo down towards the line.

She tried her best, but she’d quickly fallen behind the others in her group, with Leo shooting off ahead, but her haphazard training over the past few months had definitely helped to the point that while she was at the rear, she was at least finishing the obstacles. Though she stumbled a little through the rubber tyres, mentally berating herself and forcing herself to slow down to maintain her balance. Her height was helpful when it came to the log jumps, though it was a jolt to the system as she landed after them.

The rope climb, rope net bridge and rope swing weren’t too bad, though she did scrape her hands a little on the climb when she slipped down a rung or two before she re-adjusted her grip and tried again.

The low crawl gave her slight regrets when it came to her midriff, and she couldn’t help but curse herself after she finished them for not altering her clothing as she’d been so focused on the obstacle.

As tired as she was getting, the balance beams were actually the part she found easiest, as they took her back to some of the weird stage setups she’d done during a musical in the past, and she couldn’t help but smile as she sailed through with ease. Her happiness did not last long, however, as she approached the next part.

It was then she reached the pool, where she just looked both ways as if she was about to cross the street and just stepped off into the still water. Where she sank and sank and sank. The water was swirling around her, and she could hear music beginning to filter around her, as various creatures of the sea were slowly filtering into her view. She only began to properly question what was going on when Lochlan swam past, wearing a pair of lobster claws singing “It’s better down, where it’s wetter”.

She jerked out of her daydream, feeling a spot of pink flush her cheeks as the weird image of Lochlan serenading her at the bottom of the sea faded away. She felt her shoulders slump a little in defeat at the realisation of how big the pool of water was, and as such she broke away from the group just before they started and headed over towards their new leader.

Having detoured from the others just before they started she walked up to River, cleared her throat and introduced herself ”Hey River, I’m Veronica.” She paused for a moment, already feeling a faint blush of embarrassment spreading across her cheeks before she sheepishly continued ”um, I can’t really swim. I-er- Sorry.” she mumbled away into silence as she waited for the reprimand that she knew, with almost certainty, was coming.

River looked up from his notes as a brunette approached him. If his thoughts hadn’t been clouded by training and the occasional lingering memories from the night before, the woman in front of him might have drawn the wind from his lungs. She was stunning in a way that couldn’t be described with words and demanded his undivided attention. It was all he could think about, like a haze fell around him, shutting out the rest of the world. He blinked trying to push away the fog. It felt like he was drugged. Everything was fuzzy and out of focus except her, and his thoughts were smoke he could grasp. Who was she? Would—

Clap.

He smacked his hands together in his face, the loud noise and the sharp sting that lingered along his palms snapped him out of it. Fucking Aphrodite. River took a slight step back, avoiding direct eye contact, but a friendly enough smile remained on his face. "Umm… If you saw the girl running alongside the pool, just run suicides like her. 25m, 50m, 75m to the end. And I’ll arrange swimming lessons at some point." He hated the thought of being in a pool with an Aphrodite kid, but she needed to know how to swim. He just needed to figure out some way to negate their allure, so he doesn’t declare his undying love before the end of the first lesson.

Veronica had been quite distracted by her own uncertainty of River’s reaction to her admission, so she’d not been paying full attention to the effect her sudden appearance was having on the young man. It wasn’t till he gave his face a sharp slap that she looked up from her feet, their eyes locked for a fraction of a second before he made a conscious effort to avoid looking directly at her. While the idea of “suicides” made her stomach sink, she could at least attempt them if nothing else, and it was far better than her earlier thoughts of drowning.

She stepped forward, closing the gap between them, feeling a little mischievous as she tilted sideways, so her face was directly in his eyeline. ”Thank you, I’ll try my best. And then later, we can work on my technique. Wish me luck out there.” She smiled up at the son of Poseidon, then let her eyes flick down to his chest and back up before giving him a quick, playful wink; that could either be taken as outright flirting or letting him in on a joke. She then turned on her heel to go join the others for their turn on the obstacle course, taking her place alongside Leo.

Her run through the course went along the same lines as her earlier daydream had gone, except that once she reached the edge of the pool, she let out a long sigh and tried to steel herself against the long run ahead of her. By the time she’d finished her line drills her legs were like lead and she was gasping for breath even as she struggled on.

The log climb was arduous, her legs struggling to find purchase with every torturous step higher up, while her arms cried out in pain. Her face was bright red with exhaustion, and as much as she hated herself for it, she could taste the salt from the tears that were streaking down her face. Once she’d made it over the top, she had to do everything she could to not just fall straight off the other side, and even so, she was scrabbling to maintain a hold as she descended.

When it came to the final jump, she tried her best, but her legs were barely responding to her anymore and felt like they were made of Jello as she did what she could; but she failed to clear it and ended up half drenched by the pool. She felt completely defeated and weakened beyond belief by the end of the course, and even as River dried her and others in her group. She simply trudged behind Leo and back over to Sofia, collapsing onto one of the benches.

”Never again.” She mumbled to Sofia and Leo before she completely zoned out of what was happening around her till Iliana’s voice shook everything back into focus.

"Hi Veronica, are you going to be okay? I've been working on my ointments and I just tried my newest on myself. It works pretty good. It's for source muscles and my arms are jelly right now so they definitely needed it. I still have some to spare if you want to try it. It's made with peppermint.”

”Thanks, I could do with that. I appreciate it. Hey Heath.”

Fiona gave a half-hearted shrug of acknowledgement to Lochlan as he seemingly greeted both her and Blair with a comment about the night before. However, she did give him an approving nod when he slipped the bottle of water under the other girl's arms, since she’d likely be thankful for it once she returned to the land of the living with the rest of them. As more people filtered into the Arena, she was a little concerned by Duke’s absence, which left her a little uneasy since he was one of the only two friends she had here. She him vanishing was not exactly good news as far as she was concerned. Her gaze was drawn over to Sloane a couple of times as she mused on what could have happened to Duke or where he might be, thinking that she might have some answer. She wondered if maybe she ought to try his cabin after this if he doesn't make an appearance soon.

"Good morning, everyone. If it wasn't already obvious, I am River, your new leader… And son of Poseidon, if that matters." Their new leader was clearly trying his best to endear themselves to the rest of camp, though he did waffle on a little as he laboured the reason they were there, both at the Arena and the Camp as a whole. The view did improve a smidge when he removed his shirt to run the course as a demonstration to them all, even if he was a little overtly muscled for her tastes. Though the added layer of exertion certainly made him more appealing, the faint but fleeting intoxicated buzz from her drink was definitely helping her tolerate the whole event.

She was only half listening as Blair brought up that she was suffering, while her brother seemed to have had little to no ill effects, despite the shots they’d all partaken in the night before, being his idea in the first place; Fiona had to try her best to stifle a laugh, and made a slight snort of laughter instead. She chimed in briefly after her brother’s comment of "I can handle my liquor”, with one of her own, "blame our parentage fer that, we don’t stay drunk long.” Before letting them return to their conversation.

"Anissa, this is my brother Lochlan." Blair nodded towards her brother. "Same dad—mortal—different moms. His is Hera. And then that—" She then pointed toward where Fiona sat on Anissa’s other side. "Is Fiona, also Lochlan’s sister, but both Hera… It’s all very Once Upon a Time."

Fiona raised her heavily alcoholic coffee in greeting to Anissa ”Dia duit, pleasure lass.” giving Blair a pleasant smile at having introduced her to the newcomer, the gesture was appreciated. Though Fiona almost burst into full-blown laughter a moment or two later when the three girls were described as ’The Powerpuff Girls’ by her brother, giving him a rather incredulous look and shaking her head in utter bemusement. Though before they could really talk much more, River was starting to call out names for the obstacle course to begin in earnest.

"Best of luck to you both” She said to her brother, and what was probably her sister as well to some degree at this point. Either way, the latter of them likely needed it more than Lochlan did. Once they were finished, it was definitely Blair she felt sorry for, as the girl had collapsed in a heap, though she was glad to see their brother helping her to get clear of the course before the next group started, as the girl looked done in. She

For the most part, she glanced over the course as each camper ran through, picking out the odd one who seemed to excel here and there, but overall, she’d lost interest in the event after that second group till Nelly’s own attempt and then her own shortly after that. She couldn’t help but cry out in support of her friend when she dropped behind, "come on, Nell, you got it.” She was overjoyed when the girl came in first within her group, and had to stand, hollering a “woo” across the arena as she cheered her victory.

Then came the time for her own run through the course, which she wasn’t entirely thrilled to be doing as she was more of a dexterous person than an endurance one at the best of times.

The tyres were a little awkward, but she jogged through them quickly enough, staying as fleet-footed as she could before jumping over the hurdles, then lying flat on her belly to crawl through the next part of the course. When she got to the rope climb, she let out a long sigh, fished out her flask and took a long swig of whiskey. After she returned it back to her pocket, she grabbed a handful of dried dirt and sand from the arena floor, rubbed her hands together to keep it dry. Then proceeded to make her ascent.

The net bridge was probably the easiest part for her, followed quickly by the rope swing, where she just threw herself across to the other side, jumping the last bit and landing a little unsteadily before jogging over to the pool where she grumbled a little before diving into the water and instantly regretting the turtleneck, and she fought it for breath the entire length.

After swimming the pool, she pulled herself up and out, flopping down on the edge as she tried to catch her breath. Even as she was glad to have made it, the wet clothes were definitely feeling like a burden at that point. She was feeling a little slumped and running out of steam as she approached the penultimate part of the course, fishing out her flask for another pick-me-up to keep her motivated.

However, she received a far better form of motivation just as she reached it when Nelly’s voice rang through the arena, echoing her own cheers from earlier. ”You go girl!!” The support from her friend brought a smile to her lips as she jumped up the log ladder and deftly dropped her way back down. She had a fresh spring in her step and gave Nelly a mock salute before her jump that cleared the pool, though she wobbled a little at the end and just recovered.

Once she was done, she went and sat on a bench near where Blair and Lochla-+-n had retreated to earlier, though she was in no mood or desire to speak much, as she did her best to catch her breath.

"Hey Veronica, and it is okay. Just next time, say something before you go and disappear in the darkness."

While Sofia had smiled happily at her, Veronica couldn’t help but blush even redder as she heard the annoyance in the other girl’s voice. Of course, this only served to compound the doubt at her previous actions which had been running through her head both last night before she’d slept and again this morning, since she had abandoned her new friend without warning.

"Otherwise, I am glad to see you." Hearing Sofia’s tone lighten certainly helped to pull Veronica out of her self-imposed and embarrassed wallowing that she had been quickly descending into. And hearing Leo chime in with a greeting of his own did wonders to distract her from her own thoughts, though his mention of missing the party caused her blush to deepen again as she took a seat on the bench next to Sofia.

"But about the training, I am sure I will be fine, but yeah, it will not be an easy course for some." Leo was commenting on the course that was already looming in their future in a much calmer way than Veronica was feeling about it, and she was a little thankful that she wasn’t alone in that when Sofia voiced her own concern.

"That some may be me, Leo, since I have never done an obstacle course before and this one looks.... tough." Veronica nodded along in agreement with Sofia as she spoke, feeling a little worried the more she looked over what they were being expected to do. Even though she was mostly back to being fit and well and had taken to her own private training, it all felt like nowhere near enough for this. Sofia seemed closer to Veronica’s physical level as far as she could tell, while Leo, on the other hand, looked as if he would barely break a sweat doing this, so that certainly explained his far more relaxed take on the situation.

"Do not sweat, Sofia, it looks tough, but it can be overcome. I just wonder how the people with hangovers will do." Veronica giggled a little at Leo’s comment and couldn’t help letting her gaze drift from the obstacle course to see if she could spot any of her fellow campers who might be struggling this morning. And keeping a slightly cursory look around to see if she could spot a certain someone from last night, whenever he was due to arrive. ”If you say so, Leo, and thanks for the vote of confidence.”

"I'm hoping I'll be alright with parts of it, but others..." as she paused, her eyes were lingering on what looked like a patch of water, and she felt a momentary panic as she thought back to the last time she’d even attempted to swim. "Not so much..."

Veronica listened as Sofia first inquired about both their new leader and mused about how that would change the dynamic at camp, and starting off with a full obstacle course could mean a few different things. And at the very least, that was likely to mean their lives were going to be a lot more difficult in the days or weeks to come. As if she didn’t need more reasons to dislike her mother, being sent here was definitely adding to the list a few times.

Leo knew about as much as both her and Sofia, given that they’d all heard the same announcement that morning, so it wasn’t as if he could offer much more insight into what their future held as far as training was concerned.

”Do you have any idea why camp is getting a new leader in the first place?"

Leo’s question about their leader and the turbulent events prior to his arrival caught her a little off guard. ”Errr...” And it was a moment before she’d fully recovered her focus enough to answer as well as she was able.

"Well, um. Yeah? So, there was this whole thing when I first arrived at camp, was it the same day or a few days later, I can’t remember now. But, yeah, so, we’d just had a new leader, Nick...” She’d already been stumbling over her words as she tried to get the thoughts straight, but mentioning their old leader gave her a lump in her throat. She’d liked him when they met, but then everything happened, and now, he was gone. And it still hadn’t stopped hurting, for all she barely knew him and the others.

Veronica jerked suddenly back to reality and sank her head down a little between her shoulders and mumbled a rushed, ”sorry, ” to both Leo and Sofia before continuing in a more audible voice. ”He was a Son of Posiedon sent here to train us. Kinda the same as River is now. We had, um, these duels to get a feel for how well we could all fight,” she smiled softly, gave a half shrug and made a rough ‘huh’ noise before continuing ”which I lost. I was trapped in a stone box? Sphere? I think? Then that night, we were all in bed when something happened, and it wasn’t good. Sorry, I’m doing terribly here. Um, we found out later that this box had unleashed a storm along with horrible monsters throughout the camp. It’s all a bit hazy for parts of what happened, but my cabin was filled with shadowy figures who were threatening terrible things... then the windows blew in, and a tornado ripped through and... ju-ust flung me into the sky. I crashed into a tree... She gently rests one hand against her ribs as she remembered the pain of falling through the branches. "I broke my leg on the way down, I was just lucky to be alive,” she let out a long calming breath and, again, half laughed at her good fortune. ”Even if not long after that, I stumbled onto a few of us fighting off a Chimera, but yeah, not all of us were as lucky. Nick, and a few others either didn’t make it, or left after...”

Veronica’s voice had trailed off a little near the end, and her voice had broken a few times while she’d been speaking so by the end she was looking down at her feet with her hands twisting together nervously, ”Sorry, that wasn’t what you asked, sorry. The camp was pretty much destroyed, and Andy stepped up after that. She’s led the camp since, or at least till yesterday, when River arrived.”

"Good morning campers. This is your new leader, River, speaking. It is currently 7:30 a.m. on January 1st. Your first training will begin in one hour at 8:30 a.m. in the arena. Please arrive promptly and dress accordingly."

Veronica woke with a start as the voice of their new, self-proclaimed leader filled her cabin. She was only mildly groggy after last night and having slept through a couple of alarms before the announcement. But with a firm deadline only an hour away, she pushed herself to get up and dressed, since she didn’t want to miss the training, even if she wasn’t exactly keen on doing it.

Sitting up, she turned and swung her legs over the side of the bed before sliding her feet into a pair of slippers and standing up. She picked up and put on a thick dressing gown that was hanging on the door to the bathroom, which she tied tightly around herself since the air was chilly despite the cabin itself being fairly warm overall. It still wasn’t as warm as if she’d just remained wrapped up in bed.

She headed downstairs with the goal of having a good breakfast to ensure she’d be at her best for training. Or she would at least have something lining her stomach since it felt like it was still doing somersaults since last night. She still couldn’t quite believe she’d actually just kissed him, and she hoped it was something he’d enjoyed as well. Though her resolve had failed her, even if when he’d put his hand on her waist, she’d almost just melted against him; and would have if he hadn’t released her. She had spent the entire mad dash back to her cabin cursing herself for having run, and at least an hour after she got back, half hoping he would have chased her back before finally giving in and going to bed.

Having become lost in last night's event and overanalysing her own actions, her thoughts had gotten completely stuck to the point where she had been standing in front of the open fridge for at least ten minutes. Making a disgruntled cry like a raptor, which caused her smile to herself as she picked up the milk and a bottle of orange juice that she set on the bench before filling a glass of juice.

Once she had her drink, she poured herself a bowl of cereal she’d found in the cupboard, something similar to Smacks if she could guess, though the box didn’t look familiar and was written in Greek. She dropped a couple of slices of bread into the toaster on the counter and started munching on the first part of her breakfast while the next part cooked. Once the toast was ready and had popped, she grabbed a jar of chilled strawberry jam from the fridge and returned the juice and milk before sorting a plate for her toast.

After finishing her breakfast, she left her dishes and glass resting in the sink, half hoping the cabin would magically clean them while she was out but fully expecting them to have multiplied instead; though she’d never really tested it as the main hall did it all magically and she usually cleaned everything first in the cabin but time was starting to get away from her. Dashing back upstairs, throwing her dressing gown onto the bed, and kicking off her slippers as she passed, she turned the shower on and opened her phone to play some music. Partly because she loved her music, but mainly to help her keep time as she jumped into the scalding hot water.

Veronica had set her phone to a random playlist, which clearly had plans to delay her as Dirty Thoughts by Chloe Adams began to play, and as she sang along to the words, she couldn’t help but think back again to last night. Doing her best not to get lost in wishful thinking or criticising herself for chances not taken, she hurried through getting clean; otherwise, it may not have been just the mirror that got steamy. Within minutes, she left the shower, wrapped a towel around herself, then tried to think what would be best to wear as she dried off.

While she was drying her hair, she stood in front of the mirror, mentally going through her options while she reshaped clothing on and off as she thought about what would be best for training, since she had no idea what exactly River would be having them do. She had to keep chastising herself because whenever her thoughts drifted back to last night, her outfit choices kept becoming a little tighter, shorter or generally more revealing. She kept half-wondering which would appeal to Lochlain and had to force herself to refocus on what would be best for training instead rather than trying to seduce her fellow demigod.

She eventually settled on a sports bra, tank top, loose yoga pants and a pair of trainers, which would mean she wouldn’t overheat if training became intense. Though as the camp temperature would have most likely gone back to normal, she did make sure to pick up her denim jacket from last night as she was about to leave, and she was thankful for having done so, as it was a cold walk, half jog to the arena. At least till she got there and there was a sudden increase in temperature, making her wish she’d brought a bottle of water with her or something.

The obstacle course looked rather intimidating to her as she looked it over, making her feel uncertain about how the training was going to go for them all, and her in particular. She did her best to glance around, trying to spot if a certain someone had arrived, making a concentrated effort to look nonchalant about it if he was. Instead, she spotted Iliana and Nelly sitting on one of the benches, so she gave the pair a wave, same when she spotted Wes further back and half thought about going to join him, but thought better of it as he seemed a little withdrawn. She instead headed over to where her new friend from the night before was seated next to a tall redhead she wasn’t familiar with.

”Hey Sofia, sorry again for running off last night.” She smiled at her friend, and blushed a little in embarrassment before turning to Leo ”Hello, I’m Veronica, I’m guessing you’re another new arrival? How are you both feeling about this training? Looks a little daunting to me at least.” She took a seat on the bench next to Sofia as they waited for the training to start.

Her dream was a confused mismatch of images that she knew and those she didn’t. She’d been falling down what felt like an endless pit where the walls were dotted with cracked mirrors or distorted windows that looked out onto places that were as familiar as they were unknown, with faint overlapping sounds crying out to her as she passed. Much of what she saw would have turned her stomach if it wasn’t already being thrown about as much as she was in her descent.

As she spun through the air, trying and failing to orient herself, she thought she could catch snippets of a rather bored and smarmy voice echoing around her from the that she passed. Something about the voice seemed to raise a mixture of emotions from her, and she distinctly found herself wishing for a weapon with which to silence the source of the voice.

At last, she found herself approaching the shadowy figure that was constantly taunting her with barbed words, and she'd finally be rid of their incessant insults and half-veiled threats. Often her nights were filled with a feeling of regret over past actions, yet whatever this misplaced memory or new conjuration was, she felt far from mournful at the thought of silencing them.

As she closed the distance between them and could almost taste their blood on her tongue, everything shattered into a million pieces.

"Good morning campers.”

The dream broke apart as a voice reverberated throughout the cabin, jolting Fiona back into wakefulness. This was accompanied a fraction of a second later by a meaty thud as she’d rolled straight out of bed to land flat on the wooden floor, where she resigned herself to remain as she continued to listen to their vindictively early wakeup call.

"This is your new leader, River, speaking. It is currently 7:30 a.m. on January 1st. Your first training will begin in one hour at 8:30 a.m. in the arena. Please arrive promptly and dress accordingly."

She was struggling to maintain a grasp on consciousness, her eyes flickering open and closed as they blearily tried their best. There was an irony to the fact that this was to be their first day of training, and she was already feeling a bit like a training academy herself, given that parts of her kept passing out. No doubt there’d be plenty of that to come for everyone else, depending on whether this new leader of theirs would be going easy on them or not.

After she’d pushed herself up off the floor, yawned and cleared the sleep from her eyes, she started on a few stretches to try and bring back a little bit of wakefulness to her muscles. Fiona pulled on a slightly oversized t-shirt that came down to around just above her knees and slowly plodded downstairs towards the kitchen of her cabin. She was very thankful that the hob was electric, though she didn't dwell on the thought too long because then there’d be the question of where it was coming from exactly; and while gas would probably have her wondering the same, that would have live flame, which she would much rather do without.

Grabbing a frying pan, a bread bun, butter and several cuts of bacon, she set about making herself a good morning bacon breakfast roll. The bacon sizzled away in the pan while she buttered the bread and poured herself a glass of milk, and took a quick swig of whiskey from an open bottle by the sink. When the bacon was nice and crispy, she made sure to lather the bun with brown sauce, set it on a plate and piled it high; then she squished it together before munching away in satisfaction. Once she’d finished the roll and milk, she downed her coffee, then washed up the knife, plate, cup and glass she’d used before heading back upstairs to grab a quick shower and get dressed.

She was a slightly off-balance whirlwind as she quickly dried herself off after the shower and picked out her outfit for today, having settled on a black turtleneck, jeans with knee-high suede boots. She then also applied a light ring of black eyeshadow around her eyes before going back downstairs. On her way, she picked up the pan she’d used and left to cool and gave it a quick rinse in the sink before leaving it to soak.

As she had a little time, she made herself a fresh cup of coffee in a travel mug, similarly topped off with whiskey as her first one had been, as it was getting closer to half eight. As it was still the middle of winter, she grabbed a jumper from the closet by the door and then left the jumper open at the front, making sure to slip her freshly filled flask into the pocket of the jumper before heading out.

It didn’t take her long to get over to the Arena, and while the air was definitely cold when she left her cabin, it was once again close to stifling almost the moment she stepped into the arena itself, not helped by the sip of coffee she’d taken as she crossed the threshold. As she looked around, it was obvious that their new leader had clearly been busy, though it was a lot to have accomplished so quickly and for a son of Poseidon. Fiona was wondering if camp or the gods had perhaps helped in that regard when she spotted Andy asleep on a bench, which could mean she’d helped, though she was hardly the only camper dozing in the arena, but if she had, that would be interesting, and rather hilarious if their new leader couldn’t pull this off himself.

Walking further into the arena, she approached a pair of campers who were already there and waiting. "Morning, Nell, and Iliana”, she quickly added the other girl's name to her greeting, having almost forgotten to mention her before continuing. ”How’re ya both doing? Also, bollocks to that though.” Fiona grumbled as she greeted her friend and Iliana, seated next to her, with a half-hearted nod towards the obstacle course. After taking a sip of her whiskey with coffee and she continued to walk past and up towards the back stands.

She’d intended to check in on Blair, since while not siblings by blood, they were technically something akin to that, so her plan had been to make a bit of an effort to get to know her. She was half wondering whether she ought to have brought a second coffee with her, but as she reached the other girl, she had to stifle a laugh as Blair was utterly passed out. Which, in hindsight, was completely understandable given how far gone she was must have been last night, though Fiona had only vaguely registered at the time. Instead of waking Blair, as that wouldn’t earn her any friends, she settled down on the bench next to hers as quietly as she could.

"Poor lass.” she whispered, trying not to wake her, and half contemplating making a pillow with her jumper and following Blair’s lead, as there was a little bit before training was due to start.

Fiona spotted one of the newcomers standing behind the bar, and he had seemingly been pouring drinks for many of the others, having taken it upon himself to serve them for some reason. She’d poured herself a fresh whiskey while she followed along, having drifted a little into the background as Nelly was inserting them into the conversation. She had to force herself to maintain her composure as she watched the new barman pouring a line of flaming shots, and other than flashing him rather venomous looks, her only outward reaction was standing a little too still along with a slight tremble in her hands.

All in all, she was starting to become tired from all the social interaction tonight, since as much as she liked Nelly, the girl had more boundless energy than anyone she’d ever met. And being dragged into a somewhat forced conversation with more people was not exactly what she’d been hoping for.

Even so, while she was certainly abrasive to some, she was rarely unduly rude if she could help it. So, she made sure to offer a greeting to Evelyn and Lochlan, muttering something about how they should perhaps meet under better circumstances, since her brother had appeared slightly dazed when they were approaching, but either way, he was clearly more interested in Evelyn than he was in her or Nelly.

Evelyn had also looked as if she had been about to leave when they arrived, and was forced to engage in small talk. Fiona gave the other girl a half-apologetic smile and mouthed ‘Sorry’, thankful that Lochlan likely wouldn’t care to notice her doing that while Nelly was busy pouring herself a fresh drink and offering to see if any of them wanted one as well, which they all declined.

She was looking around for Duke, half hoping she could use him as a way to excuse herself, but his table was now vacant, and after a moment searching, she thought she could just about make out his retreating back across the party. He was heading towards the Lake, alongside Sloane, most likely. Well, someone whom she assumed was Sloane from what she could make out. She wasn’t entirely surprised he’d given up on the party eventually, since this wasn’t his scene any more than it was hers outside of somewhere to drink, and she could probably have accomplished much the same in the quiet of her cabin. She honestly wasn’t even sure why she’d been out as long as she had herself.

While Fiona had been distracted looking for her other friend, Nelly had darted away from the bar and made a line straight for Sylas. She’d mentioned briefly something of her plans earlier, and it had felt like a bad idea then and while Fiona hadn’t warned her against it, because what would be the point, as the headstrong girl would do it anyway, but it felt somehow worse now. She wasn’t exactly appreciative of having been dragged into conversation with her brother and Evelyn, especially with it quickly starting to feel awkward as she had little to add, Lochlan had barely acknowledged her presence, and Evelyn still seemed as if she’d rather be elsewhere.

The silence between them without Nelly to fill it was beginning to feel a little suffocating, and Fiona couldn’t shake the feeling that Evelyn’s continued stare was becoming a little intense, as if she was trying to worm out secrets from her or something which didn’t help anything. She was draining her drink yet again when the first of the fireworks exploded overhead and caused her to almost drop her glass when she involuntarily flinched, her knuckles turning white as she did her best to keep a tight hold.

She stepped back, her other hand slipping behind her to grip the bar while she carefully rested her tumbler onto the wood. Each firework caused her heart rate to spike as the sky was filled with bright, fiery colours, and her body flinched as she felt the explosions shake her core. She knew they were harmless, far too far away to cause her harm or affect her in any way. Yet even with that knowledge, she was gulping down air through gritted teeth, with a mouth that was already as dry as a desert and eyes shut. Each bang vibrated around her throat, and she twitched, cursing her own weakness as she felt herself dragged back to her childhood. When the last of the fireworks had finished echoing in the darkness, she breathed a long, slow sigh of relief.

Leaning back against the bar, she turned her face upwards, opening her eyes and taking care to wipe away the slightest hint of wetness left by the tear or two that had broken through. It was several moments after the fireworks had faded that she noticed that Sylas and Evelyn were getting quite heated, which caused her to frown as she wondered what had happened to Nelly’s plan. Though almost as soon as she realised it was happening, they broke apart and before she could look round for her one remaining friend at the party Evelyn had pulled away demanding to know what Sylas was doing which as an initial reaction made Fiona wary given how involved they’d been seconds before but the tone of her voice suggested her feelings on it weren’t positive.

Even as Fiona was trying to process what was happening between them, Sylas spat out several venomous words, turned and stormed off without a backwards glance. His cool façade was definitely showing cracks tonight as far as she was concerned. She was about to ask what exactly that was all about when Evelyn took off after Sylas, which only served to make her even more confused by events. Shaking her head a little at the sudden burst of activity, she picked up her glass again and slowly poured herself another whiskey.

She was feeling a smidge better after the fireworks, especially now that the flaming drinks had also been moved further away from her, only to be replaced with glasses of something yellow and bubbly. And with Nelly having rejoined her, she was ready to see in the new year and wind down. Which was exactly when a blur shot past, causing her to almost lose spill her drink.

Veronica had greatly enjoyed her evening with Sofia, and they’d certainly had a relaxing time even if they’d perhaps not accomplished as much as they’d hoped as midnight drew closer. She sipped a little of her drink, savouring the sweet taste of coconut as she listened to Heath and Sofia talking about cookies and nodding along with the mentions of training that awaited them in the morning.

She was honestly dreading it herself as she didn’t think she was ready for whatever it was they were going to be dealing with, her mind flashing back to how abysmal she’d done during the duels and winced as she brushed over her ribs which still ached from the night of Pandora’s Box.

”The training shouldn’t be too bad... I hope. The duels were ok-ish?”

She knew she wasn’t being very helpful, but she kept getting distracted and glancing back towards the bar. She was going back and forth in her mind over something that she knew was a terrible idea, and she shouldn’t do it, wouldn’t do it. She and Sofia had promised that they’d have fun but that they’d be careful, and this would definitely not be that. Not by any stretch of the imagination.

Even so, as she drifted in and out of the conversations happening around her, she only half heard what Sofia and Heath were saying. She felt so guilty that she wasn’t keeping up with her friends properly, but she was plotting, and she knew she shouldn’t. As the fireworks began, she knew that time was running out for her to make a decision one way or another, and what better time was there for bad decisions than at the stroke of midnight?

”Oh, fuck it!” She downed her still mostly full drink of double malibu and coke in one hurried gulp, glanced sheepishly at a Sofia ”Happy new year, and sorry!” She darted round her friends and dashed over to the bar, narrowing avoiding knocking the glass out of Fiona’s hand as the girl was pouring herself a fresh drink.

Veronica now stood far too close to Lochlan and pressed her hands against his chest to force him back against the bar. There was a flicker of doubt in her eyes before she tilted her head and smiled mischievously, then she ran one hand up his side before slipping it around his neck and pulling his lips towards hers as midnight struck.

She pulled back a fraction, her lips parting as her tongue flicked out to lick across his lips as she whispered ”Happy New Year.”. Sadly, in the bright light of the new year, her confidence faltered as her thoughts screamed with self-doubt, and she took off into the night, trying to get back to her cabin, her face burning bright red with embarrassment.

"Ye might wanna chase after her, Loch.” Fiona chuckled as she nodded in the direction that the fleeing child of Aphrodite had ran off in before she softly began to sing, half to tease her brother but also because the new year always invoked an urge for song. ”Black is the colour of my true love's hair, Her lips are like some roses fair, She's the sweetest smile, And the gentlest hands, I love the ground, Whereon she stands.”

After she finished the short verse, she drained her drink and left the glass on the bar, then wished both Nelly and Lochlan a good new year and made her own way back to her cabin. Once she was at the edge of the field, she started on a different song that filled the night's air. Her voice was a little out of practice, but still strong and filled with emotion all the same.

”My song for you this evening,
It's not to make you sad
Nor for adding to the sorrows
Of this troubled northern land
But lately I've been thinking
And it just won't leave my mind
I'll tell you of two friends one time
Who were both good friends of mine”

"I heard the point of camp was to train, and the camp's new leader wants to start training tomorrow." Sofia sighed before continuing, "train for what I do not know but I was told to come here to stay safe, and my mother wanted me here, so here I am.”

Veronica listened while Sofia voiced her concerns about the potential training that they had coming up and thought about what, if anything, she could say to help. While she’d done a little herself, with the duels between some of the other campers when Nick had been their leader, everything had quickly become far too chaotic for any further training beyond that. So, her own knowledge of what they were meant to be training for was very limited.

”It’s probably so we don’t hurt normal people, maybe? Unless we’re preparing for the end of the world or something. Like Ragnarok maybe? Oh but that’s... Scandinavian, I think, isn’t it? Rather than Greek?” She shrugged and turned towards Anatoliy ”I think it was Andy’s idea to give us one last night of freedom before things turn serious or whatever the training is.”

Veronica was very thankful that Anatoliy had been receptive to her comments about his guitar, especially with Sofia backing her up so she didn’t feel as self-conscious about her suggestion. She thought it was lovely of Anatoliy to offer to help teach her how to play, and she was curious to see how well her new friend would find the guitar. And also, to find out what other instruments she’d tried and apparently failed to play from her own description.

The plan of them grabbing food, then having a relaxing time listening to music just out of the limelight sounded like a good way to wind down the evening. Though she still wanted to try out the sledging hill, as that had looked very fun, especially from Nelly’s shouts when she’d first arrived at the party. Maybe finish off the night with a bit of dancing as the clock got closer to midnight.

"So you two like this idea, or have something else in mind?”

Before she could really say anything more about their plans, Heath had walked up to them and derailed her train of thought. ”Evening. Veronica, I see you've met Anatoliy and Sofia. I hope I am not intruding. How are you three doing?”

She liked Iliana’s adoptive brother well enough, though he had sometimes felt a little like he was acting like the other girl's shadow, which, given what had happened to her and then to them all, was understandable. It was good to see him about as his own person for a change, even if Veronica wasn’t sure how to relate to him without Iliana.

I don’t think you are intruding at all. I’m doing better than earlier, thank you. How are you?’ She was glad Anatoliy had spoken up for them first, as she was still regaining her track of the conversation and trying to remember what she had been going to say. Though looking at him, she thought his smile and even the wave he’d given Heath felt a little awkward, and he seemed to keep leaning towards him before straightening back up again.

”Hello Heath, oh, you’ve all met already? Her voice faltered for a second as a wave of negative thoughts shot through her head before she caught herself. She did her best to continue without giving in to some absurd plot about Heath, Anatoliy and Sofia planning something against her You’re not interrupting at all, we were just grabbing food and getting a table.”

She turned towards Anatoliy and Sofia, smiling brightly as she glanced between her two new friends ”Well, I’ve got mine at any rate.” She giggled a little and carried on speaking ”Should we maybe get a table on the edge once you two have as well?” facing back to Heath, she picked up ”What about you? How’s your evening been, Heath?”

Veronica was still feeling a little giddy from her two shots as well as the easy conversation between her new friends; even more so that so far neither had been looking at her the way most people did if they were around her long enough. She tried so hard to suppress her abilities, but they usually wormed their way out sooner or later, not helped by the darker, mischievous side of her that wanted to be worshipped.

She pulled her focus back to the present and away from the downward spiral of her internal thoughts, looking from Sofia over to Anatoliy before speaking. ”Of course you can join us, we’ve both invited you to anyway, so don’t worry. But thank you for enjoying our vibe.” She gave him a glowing smile and blushed a little at his compliment, before taking another slow sip of her drink, savouring the coconut flavour. ”Our plan for tonight is to look out for each other and just have fun, isn’t it, Sofia? And hopefully make camp a little more welcoming, though I think the general idea is to train us up for...” she paused and vaguely gestured at the air above her ”something? I didn’t really want to come here either, but Mother insisted.” Her voice had hardened a little as she mentioned Aphrodite, showing a clear bitterness aimed at the goddess despite her otherwise light and warm tone.

Veronica shrugged a little before spinning round and walking around the bar, and in the direction of the food table. She was wondering what would be available for them to eat, and whether there’d be anything picked out for each of them in particular or if it would be a random assortment. As she walked, she kept glancing over her shoulder to ensure that the other two were still with her, as her inner voice began whispering doubts about their sincerity in enjoying her company.

Having reached the table, she turned and gestured towards Anatoliy ”I’m glad there’s someone else who plays guitar. I sing a bit myself as well.” putting her drink down, she picked up a plate and began to pile up an assortment of food, looking over at the other two to see what items they were also getting. ”Do you play an instrument or anything, Sofia?” She glanced at Sofia, with another smile, while nodding over at Anatoliy’s guitar.

”I was going to ask what you play, but maybe once we’ve got a table, you could show us?” As soon as the words left her lips, she felt a momentary panic of uncertainty as she’d noticed that Anatoliy appeared to be weary when speaking with them; likely from whatever had already happened to him today, but she was worrying over whether she was making things better or worse for him. ”Or not!” She hurried to add to her suggestion, trying to fix things that may not even have been broken. ”I was just curious, and you don’t need to play anything if you don’t want to. We’d all be eating our food anyway...” Her head drooped a little as her voice faded towards the end of her words, feeling self-conscious as her skin burned bright crimson.

While Morne was continuing to lay it on thick as far as Fiona was concerned, even if Nelly was taking it in her stride, she couldn’t help but admit that he was almost tolerable when he wasn’t trying to butter them both up. Though perhaps tolerable was perhaps a little too generous for someone whose voice made it sound like life was distracting them from being a foppish layabout.

Though at his mention of loving a little fire, she felt herself stiffen for a moment before her head gave a slight twitch and her expression flickered through an uncertain mix of emotions. She tried her best to hide the discomfort with another sip of her drink before she cast an uneasy glance over towards the bonfire at the edge of the party, where others were huddled.

She gave Nelly a nod as she spoke of her own schooling "I’ve nay idea what the hell a GED is Nell. School was weird, Da would’na have it, see, so we got some teach out every few month from the Government, check where we’re at. Outside that, it was whatever the family taught you, you learned or could find out. Often we’d be nicking books and like from markets or libraries or whatever we’d barter for.”

Looking over at Morne after he’d been dismissive of his own education, she tilted her head to one side before asking him a question "So, other an doing ‘whatever the fuck you want’, was there anything special you wanted to do with ya life?”

Fiona followed along as Nelly proceeded to point out those at Camp to Morne, though she almost choked on her drink when he turned back to them and labelled the main three as cunts. She fought for breath, while trying to stifle her laughter but it ended up coming out as little more than a wheeze before she was able to breathe again enough to respond. "That's one way to describe them, though you might not want to say that too loudly.” As soon as she’d finished, she pressed her hand over her mouth as she continued to laugh, her voice almost silent while she kept her eyes half closed in mirth.

Morne had then gone into a story of someone he’d worked with, though Fiona was sure everyone knew people like that just as much as those who hadn’t pulled their own weight. She remembered plenty of both from back with her family as well as places she worked since leaving home, though she did think Morne was most certainly more in the latter category. And while ‘a bit of fun’ could be anything, she knew it fast became disruptive if that’s all they did, which felt like where he’d take it given enough freedom. Even if not letting them have music on during closing up at the end of the shift sounded unreasonable, Fiona did wonder what exactly it was he’d done to Katie that he’d called ‘fun’.

"Hey Morne, if you want, I can try introducing you to people. Sadly I won't know all since a lot of the campers here are new ones. More than double than what it used to be it seems, right Fiona?"

Fiona nodded in mute agreement to Nelly, even if she had a sinking feeling of what the future likely held, namely being dragged around the camp for awkward introductions with people she already knew but had barely interacted with or strangers who would end up avoiding her just the same.

We can leave the table and mingle with some more people. Sounds like a good time to me and Fiona definitely should join us,’ Morne looked at Fiona ‘ You definitely want to join us. Maybe we can get up to some mischief and mess with people? Anyone you don’t like?

She’d already resigned herself to her fate by following along in Nelly’s wake, despite her own plans for the evening. And while Morne’s repeated invitation felt more like a command than an offer, which rankled her, she glanced at Nelly before biting back the vicious retort that was bubbling to the surface and instead settled on rolling her eyes in exasperation before standing up to look down at them both. Hopefully, whatever mischief he was planning would be far more entertaining than his company had been so far tonight.

"Less o’ the Jedi mind tricks, eh? You sounded like a cheap tricks magician me da would have given a good hiding for scaring the kids.” she sighed and drained what was left of her glass before placing it gently back onto the table. "I’ll be back in a sec, right?”

Fiona walked, mostly straight over to one of the other occupied tables, namely the one that she’d been stealing glances at for most of the evening, which was thankfully well out of earshot of where she’d just come from. "Hey, Duke,” She leant forward, so her head was resting on his shoulder with her face down "Nell’s forcing me ta be sociable with a new kid, save me at some point...” She mumbled against his jumper before raising her head. "Please? Oh, hey, Sloane.” She pulled herself back to a better standing position, having completely forgotten that Duke hadn’t been sitting alone. Now that she remembered the other girl was there, she continued by including her in the conversation "Sorry for interrupting. Feel free ta give him a hand rescuing me if it comes to it. See you two later,” she made to leave, but paused for a moment, having just spotted Rocco lying across their feet. "Or three, as that’s a sweet looking dag you’ve got there, Sloane.” giving them a wave that was half salute, she spun a little unevenly on one foot and went back to join Nelly and Morne in what would probably be far more social interaction than she’d been prepared for tonight. "So, where first now, Nell?”
