Fuck. It's been a while since I've been pissed off. Usually, I just get sad, so this is a welcome change of pace.

"Personality, I mean that's what counts, right? That's what keeps a relationship going through the years. Like heroin, I mean heroin's got a great fucking personality."

Halo: Acceptable Losses

The year is 2526 AD...

...and the UNSC is scrambling to figure out how one fights a losing war. Our enemies, The Covenant, are an alien conglomerate society hellbent on exterminiating Humanity in a holy war. First contact was made more than a year ago. Since then, the Covenant have been busy. They've compltely destroyed four planets; Harvest, Bliss, Circinius IV, and Biko. Humanity is outgunned, outnumbered, and still divided. Old wounds from the many Outer Colony insurrections, anger over the "reorganization" of the Colonial Military Administration, and the continued actions of the United Rebel Front keep tensions high, even as aliens reduce the surface of colonies to glass.

For the past year, Humanity has been on the defensive, suffering constant losses. Now, Admiral Preston J. Cole leads humanity's first offensive. He intends to retake Harvest. Though a ruined planet, unsuitable for sustained human life, taking it would be a massive morale boost. ONI specialists figure that Harvest will be back in human hands within the year but the good Admiral isn't so sure.

But the Battle for Harvest is far from the only battle on Humanity's plate. We've got a whole host of UEG Colonies just ripe for Covenant Cleansing. This is like no war we've ever fought. We need good leaders, good ships, and good soldiers if we're going to survive. If we want to win? Well, we'll need a miracle, and a few heroes. In 20 years, Humanity will probably remember those freak-shows in the power armor better than they'll remember us, but if Humanity even exists in 20 years, that'll be all the legacy we'll need.

Halo: Acceptable Losses is an RP in which players will control UNSC Marines, instead of Spartans. Acceptable Losses takes place early in the Human-Covenant War, A full five years prior to the earliest game (Halo Wars). We're going to be focusing on the camaraderie that one finds on the battlefield and the thought of soldiers in a hopeless war. Player Character death will be a major part of this RP, and not in a "you made a mistake and now I'm killing off your character" sort of way. Instead, I'll be encouraging you to occasionally kill off characters. I intend for the RP to span the whole war, so there'll be 20+ years for that to happen. Characters will die, be promoted, desert, maybe even defect to the Rebels. The point is, I want to to have a changing cast. By the end, we may even be facing a Theseus's Ship sort of situation, with none of the OG characters remaining.

As of now, our characters are in the 17th Marine Regimental Combat Team, 53rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, 9th Marine Expeditionary Force. We'll be only very loosely sticking to Halo canon. The Harvest Campaign that starts the RP is a real event in the Halo timeline, but moving forward future battles may be completely fictitious. We see but a fraction of the Halo Universe in-game, and it would be cool to expand on that. Knowledge of the Universe is not required. I'll be doing a bit of research to form a sort of "codex" in the OOC of the actual thread, and even then, strict adherence to canon and the rules of the universe if by no means required.

I'm looking for 8 people at the most. Marine Squads have 10-13 soldiers, but I want room for NPC's and extra player characters.

Rules

  • GM's word is law, as is the word of my Co-GM's. That being said, I'm pretty laid back. You may disagree with me, and I will take your concerns into consideration, but I will be making the final decision.
  • Typical RP rules. Don't godmod, metagame, etc.
  • Due to the very nature of this RP, there will be blood. Aliens will be blasted apart, humans will get run through with energy swords or stomped by Brutes, and characters will very likely use coarse language. That being said, do be over 18 if you intend to join.
  • Both men and women, of all manner of sexualities, serve in the UNSC. This RP will be spanning over the course of at least 26 years. I expect, at some point, that love and sex will come up. Keep it tasteful and abide by Guild Rules and we should be fine.
  • Contribute to the story. You should be interacting with your fellow RP members, and your character(s) should be interacting with other characters. Throw ideas out there! Plot!
  • We will have a posting order. The posting order is not to be broken unless I or a Co-GM allow it. If you need some time, let us know, and we'll let someone else go ahead. If someone is taking awhile, we'll go ahead and skip them, anyway. If someone is taking a while and is holding up proceedings, I will warn them, and if the warning is not heeded, I will kill their character. Character death, even in this case, is not the end of one's involvement in the RP, unless they want it to be.
  • Finally and most importantly; Wheaton's Law. Don't be a dick. Of all the rules you might break, this is the one I will come down most harshly on. Respect your peers.

Special thanks to @CaptainBritton for this!

The Story So Far

The date is March 3rd, 2526. Whiskey Squad is aboard the UNSC Eternity Abroad, a Pheonix-class Colony Ship repurposed into a Battle Carrier. In a few short hours, they will board a Pelican Dropship and take part in one of the first ground battles of The Harvest Campaign.
