That's the hard part of roleplaying.
There's a work-around for that, if you trust someone enough to post your character in the background (or as needed, into the foreground) then you can elect a second/stunt-double to do the heavy-lifting of your posting.
In the event of original-author death, the second usually inherits that character. I've inherited about four over the course of ten years.
1. A nation in civil war / specifically, a female child winter-soldier (which consisted of several firsts back in 2006/7).
2. A gigolo in the middle of a TWD RP, incidentally shortly after killing off my own character and a bunch of others (raiding an ICBM-silo for food is a bad idea).
3. A mech-pilot (using the term
very loosely, but lets just say she can dual-wield several mechs at a time).
4. And a couple of cyborg-werewolves and other assorted shadowrun-characters.
Oddly enough, none of those characters have been permitted to die inside their story-arcs and generally lashed-out by taking homicidally-insane up to 11.
-Well, maybe the noble-pyromancer... she did take a crossbow-bolt to the gut...
