So if I understand this correctly, things in parentheses () are basically open messages that anyone within the chat group it's posted in can see unless leaked, of at which point anything else can see it as well?

Parantheses were representative of sending PMs about eight years ago on another site. They're pretty much deprecated, but could conceivably be brought back if someone wanted to invest the narrative energy to do it. I would look closely into whether it's really optimal for what you're interested in doing, though.
