Everything hurt. A boundless darkness stretched out before him in all directions, beckoning him to tumble into it and just sleep. Somewhere far in the distance he could hear the faint reverberation of sounds. Boots scuffing on wood, the sharp cutting noises of lasers lancing through the air, grunts of pain. He tried to move, but it was useless. Cold flowed down his back and into his muscles, mingling with an exhaustion that made his limbs about as useful as a un-strung puppet. He thought back, back to the last things he could remember. The cliff, the hands, standing side by side with all those warriors, light. Light more terrible and radiant than anything he’d ever seen bearing mercilessly down in him.

Was that it? Was he dying? Again? Were these sounds he was hearing the last gasps of that terrible battle?

In a short time, though, even the sounds died away. Everything got quiet. Or maybe, like last time, he had simply fallen too far away to hear anything. Then, cutting through the dark...

...his is lin...?

A voice. The barest outline of a sentence. Was someone calling his name?

It was only a moment later that he felt something flooding into his body that chased the pair and weariness from his body leaving only, strangely enough, the cold wetness on his back.

...mate...om the party...uy version of Link...?

He was sure this time, someone was definitely talking to him.

...open your eyes...

With a sinking feeling he realized that this was all dreadfully familiar.

"Wake up!"

Light flooded Link’s eyes as they opened with a start. He felt strangely refreshed, as though he'd just awoken from a long and dreamless rest. It was a feeling he'd only had once before, when Princess Zelda's voice had reached out to him and guided him up from the well of sleep. It had been calming, gentle, like the cooing of a bird on your windowsill greeting the morning.
This girl's technique was more brute force, but nonetheless effective. She had just pinched both his cheeks and pulled until you could get a good look at his gums.

She pulled back when she noticed his eyes were open, letting his face snap back into its proper shape. “Welcome back.” She said as he sat up off the...he looked over his shoulder and saw that he’d been leaned up against a small wall of ice. That explained the cold, and why his back was wet. At least he wasn’t naked this time. He turned back to face the girl, who was now sitting on her legs just watching him curiously. She was Hylian for sure, he could tell by the ears poking out from a mop between the cascades of her hair. More than that, if he looked past the strange mismatched outfit and the ears placed neatly on her head, there was a certain familiarity about her face that reminded him of the one he saw whenever he looked down into the clear still water of a lake. It was the same kind of vibe he had gotten from a few of the boys present at the cliff. If you didn’t know any better you could mistake them for relatives of his.

“It’s like looking in a mirror.” She said, leaning closer in fascination. He wouldn't go quite that far, no matter how good he looked in Gerudo garb. “I’m Linkle. I bet you have a lot of questions, but I’m not sure we have all that much time right now. Do you think you could help us kill a monster?”

He blinked at her a few times, then grabbed a hold of the top of the iced over ropes of the bridge to pull himself up and get a look around. The landscape was unfamiliar with its giant tower, the bigger stone head that had been ruined, and the even bigger blob of disquieting darkness that loomed over the canyon. The people hanging around were unfamiliar, at least most of them, with many being creatures he had never seen before. He had no clue how he’d gotten up on this rickety bridge, how he’d gotten so injured, nor the circumstances of his revival and now he was being asked to throw himself into danger in a world he didn’t know.

“Sure.” He said, smiling nostalgically.

“Awesome!” Linkle shouted, bouncing up. “Follow me.” She said, having spotted where the heroes were gathering in the tower and heading toward it. That bounce never left Linkle's step as he followed along behind at a more casual pace along the bridge. Occasionally she’d throw glances backwards at him, and whenever she did she would speed up a little from the excitement. Like a little kid, excited to show you something but unsure if you’ll still really be there when you check. It occurred to Link at that moment that he had no idea whether or not he had been an only child.

“Hey.” He called forward, causing her to stop on the spot and spin round. “Am I your great uncle?”

She considered that for a moment, then her face lit up like the sun. “Maybe.” She replied eagerly, before turning and proceeding at double speed.

Link just scratched his head before shrugging it off. He’d learned a while ago that if you just went with it eventually things stopped being confusing.

There was never enough time, Linkle thought. She’d met two whole other Heroes, seen a quartet more, but there was never a moment where she could really talk to any of them. Adventure always called, there was always something she had to do. She looked back again, just to make sure he hadn’t fallen over the side or been eaten by a giant bird or something. Nope, good, still there. She was planning to keep it that way.

She waved back at Tora as she passed him, happy to see he wasn’t all that damp from his dip in the moat, and chuckled at the confusion on his face as Link also waved at him. She shut up though as the Princess started to hold court, only to look as surprised as Tora had when The Princess greeted Link as though she knew him. It took Link a moment before recognition filled his eyes, and he bowed his head respectfully at her address before he started looking around the room, taking careful stock of all the participants in this monster slaying endeavor.

Peach then brought out the Spirits. Tora started to suggest...something, but Poppi almost immediately intervened violently to veto the idea and drag him off. Linkle didn’t know what that was all about. It was perfectly reasonable to think about what happened to a guy if he took a lady spirit. He was wrong about becoming giant making him less cute, though. How could he be less cute if there was more of him?

As she pondered this question and imagined a Tora the size of King Dodongo rampaging around Hyrule Field she missed first pick on the spirits. Donnovan picked one out and left without a word whereas Kamek greedily took on two, a process that Link watched with great interest. Linkle stepped forward, hoping someone hadn’t gotten the one she’d taken an interest in. Thankfully, the lady with the giant crossbow was still there.

“Hello.” She said, holding the mote of light up to her face as Link looked over her shoulder.

“There’s a person in there.” He said, curiously.

“Yeah, one of the people we just fought. The hand brainwashed them and made them try to kill us, so we didn’t really have any choice.” she answered.

He nodded at this, as though the idea of The Hand wasn’t at all strange to him. It made Linkle wonder what he had seen in his adventures all the more. “What do you do now?”

“Oh right, this is really important!” She said loudly enough for anybody nearby to hear. “I either put her in my head to take her skills, put her in my heart and take her powers, make friends with her so I can summon her, or crush her to make her into an item.”

He nodded again, before turning to look at where Tora was nursing his sword wound and frowning. He returned his contemplative gaze to the spirit. “Could you do one that lets you summon her?”

“Sure! I was going to do that anyway, it’s the only one I haven't tried yet.” She replied, turning back to the spirit. “I’m Linkle. I see you’re a fan of crossbows. I like crossbows too.” She lifted up her own crossbow, turning it to different angels to show it off to the spirit. “But mine only work from really close up, so I can’t really handle anything if it’s far away. I mean…,” Linkle lowered her voice to an embarrassed whisper and leaned in, “...you saw how it was back there. You must have. I couldn't do anything to you guys. Please, help me out?”

The spirit was still for a moment, then with what seemed like a cosmic sigh the image of the one eyed sniper flowed out of the rainbow mote and stepped confidently into Linkle. She wiggled her fingers where the spirit had once sat, rolled her shoulders, swiveled her hips a little. After the two previous times it felt strange how nothing felt strange. She didn’t even feel more full, which surprised her considering there was now a whole other person in there with her.

Linkle wasted no time. “Okay, now come back out!” She ordered, and in what seemed like a spectral cloud of smoke the sniper they had just finished fighting appeared before the group again, right in front of Linkle. She appraised the would-be hero in front of her, and signed.

“You shouldn't waste my energy like this, love. We’re still deep in enemy territory.” She said, a gentle admonishment that chilled the girls enthusiasm slightly.

“Oh yeah, you guys need to recharge.” Linkle said, donking herself on the head. “Sorry. I just wanted to ask you your name.”

The sniper’s single eye widened momentarily in surprise, before a slight smile graced her lips. “Imani.” She replied, before fading away.

“Nice to meet you, Imani.” Linkle said, before turning to Link. “Cool, right?” Link, however, wasn’t there. She turned in a little circle to see him approaching Fox, Bowser, and Peach. “He didn’t even hang around to meet her.” She said, disappointed. Oh well, like she was thinking earlier, she had things to do anyway. She’d left the girls to back up Euden in case he needed it when she’d booked it up here, so she had to make sure everyone was okay.

Link, from what he had gathered through looking around and listening to Peach, thought he had a pretty good idea of why he’d been so roughed up. Before that, though, there was a question burning in his mind that had been called up by the familiar faces in this group.

“Fox, Your Majesties.” He said, relief naked in his voice. “It’s good to see you all made it out in one piece. Do you know anything about the others? That monster got me first, I didn’t see what happened to anybody else.”
It was looking at him. Matthew could swear he could see an evil glint in the two points of concentrated darkness that passed for the things eyes, like it could go for him the second it got the chance. He took a deep breath, his thumb shaking slightly above the button on the flashlight, hesitating. Halting. He tensed his legs, ready to run at any moment. He pressed down, and the thing disappeared as the light winked out.

Just a second later the light was flicked back on, but the thing hadn't moved. It's bald egg like head still poked over the line that had been carved in the wall with black ink, it's bulbous nose still hanging down over the edge in plain defiance again how any human fave should work. It's fingers still gripped the top of the black, as though ready to fling itself across the length of what he assumed was some kind of old chocolate cafe based on the distant whiffs of fudge that lingered in the air. He summoned his courage and flickered his flashlight again.

No movement. There he was, still plastered on the far wall right above the abandoned counter.

Kilroy was still here.

It hadn't taken long for Matthew to go kind of stir crazy cooped up in here. After the relaxed euphoria of a shower and having something proper in his stomach had worn off he realized he hadn't brought much of anything to occupy his mind in his new life of refuge/fugitive. This normally wouldn't be a problem, his usual response when he had nothing to occupy his time was to reminisce. Think of friends, relive exciting moments, replay movies he'd seen, he'd just let the memories float up and enjoy them.

Unfortunately, the only memories he was getting right now involved blood on snow.

So to suppress that he needed to do something.

He thought about volunteering his services to the people in charge, but after that girl from earlier had popped off in the middle of the first night and destroyed her sleeping bag, he thought better of that. It had to be hard enough corralling and managing the lot of them without having to waste time doing some on the job training for a guy whose only real skill was going fast. His next thought was bury himself in the arcade and lose himself to videogames, but that presented its own problems in a group of six to eight children that had staked their claim on that room to the exclusion of all challengers. He'd been trying to barter for entry using the 76 cents he had to his name, but those negotiations had broken down when a little boy who in retrospect was playing Galaga with way more intensity than it warranted had quietly threatened to put Matthew's blood "somewhere else" unless he stopped talking and went away. Not the tiniest itty-bittyest bit intimidated, and recognizing these kids probably had bigger issues they needed to repress than him, Matthew went on his way sans three quarters.

He'd spotted his calling by accident, really. His eyes were drawn to a support pillar as he passed by on a aimless walk around the mall, to someones crude depiction of a little bird. It was pretty cute, like a child's drawing. A circle for the body, two little dots for eyes, a triangle for a beak. Stick legs leading to three tiny toes. No wings. It looked kind of like a Kiwi bird.

He pulled out his keys and scratched off the legs.

He wasn't paranoid. He felt like he had to emphasize that to himself as he reared back and threw a plastic clothes hanger at Kilroy. It hit him square in the eye and clattered to the floor. He didn't really think he'd get any reaction as another hanger spun off Kilroy's bald head. This was mostly just something to do, to take his mind of the situation. Besides, what did it really hurt to be sure>

He advanced on the unmoving Kilroy, keeping the beam of the small crappy flashlight on his key-ring trained directly on it. In his other hand he gripped a key, teeth worn down from use. He jumped the counter and went to work breaking up Kilroys shape. Matthew separated the drawings head into just four curved lines and stepped back to observe. If he hadn't tried to kill Matthew for that he probably wasn't gonna. Maybe Goodrest wasn't actually any safer for what he was doing, but one day he'd be able to reminisce on this and laugh at how stupid he was being.

Maybe tomorrow.
Oh no, more light. These lights didn't seem to hurt though, and as they faded a blurry group of figures descended on...someone before the adult laughed and the group split up to all of them. She felt something touching her on the sides, and was about to start complaining again before the scalding headache she felt coming on seemed to drain away into the little guys fingers. Gawain looked on, hand resting on his sword on the off chance the strange creatures attempted anything untoward with either his liege or her new friends.

As they were being patched up Jessica started talking again, asking about what Penny's serfs were capable of. Penny grimaced. "Unfortunately, they're peasants. They're not allowed to move all that far from me. You saw that castle though, they're lightning fast wherever they get to work. I'll get the materials while we look for the children."

Jude handed her glasses back to her, apologizing for using them. She took them greedily. "Don't apologize. I gave them to you." She said, slipping them back on. "AH, clarity!" She looked around, jumping a little when she caught sight of the masky, roby, skinny armed healermens still hanging around, before catching sight of Lou lying on the sand stripped of all his finery. One look at Jessica and her friend told her where that stuff had gone. Without hesitation she reared back her foot and booted him right in the bum. Smiling, satisfied that she had done her part, she look up to the friendly bearded face of the shopkeeper she'd met earlier. "Do you have a handle on him? I'd leave you Gaiwen but..."

She looked down at the knight, who beamed up at her, and wondered grimly what Lou would be able to do if he managed to squeeze in to Gaiwan's literal shining armor. "He's not a good fit."

Yes.
"Trust me, Mordred doesn't live up to the hype." Penny said, grabbing at the air in the direction of the voice on the off chance Jessica was close enough to be shanghaied into being a seeing eye dog. Unfortunately she was way to far away for that so Penny just crossed her arms. "He this weird little creep with daddy issues and I don't like how he always stands right behind me."

"Far better for a knight to stand before his lord!" Gawain said, walking right up behind her as sand drained out of his armor. Penny jumped in surprise, whipping right around. She swore she could almost see the shine of his smile through the haze. It was a luster like that that had come off of practically every knight of the round table for her ever since she had started interacting with them. The funny thing was she'd really liked them when they were just words on a page, which just made her wonder why her Epithet spit them out as these deformed gremlins.

Suddenly, she heard Jude at her side. Like Jessica, he also declined the healing until after everyone else in a way that really rankled her. "Oh come on." She said, stamping her foot. "Just accept the healing. You two both have a pair of actual working eyeballs. Treasure them. We can't look around for kids and stuff if you guys all end up blind as me!"

She stopped suddenly. Before she'd known it she'd gone off agreed to what Jude had proposed.

"I mean, it's not like we can take chances." She continued, her tone softening. "We need to find people, food, water. We don't know what we have out here, so we need to take care of ourselves. And, speaking of," She took off the fake glasses Jude had made for her a tapped them against her head. "Do you have enough energy left to put these back they way they were, Jude? I can't do anything without them."

"If not I could simply carry you my lord!" Gawain said.

"Please." Penny said to Jude, a note of desperation creeping into her voice.

Linkle leaned forward with gritted teeth as an explosion ripped apart her ice wall in the middle, sending up a cloud of dust and icy shards that obscured her view. A small statue came tumbling out of the explosion, and for a moment she thought it might be Tora, but as the dust started to clear she could see Poppi embracing her creator safely on the other side. She let out a breath she didn't even know she'd been holding at that. She didn't need to look over at the statue that had tumbled away, the appearance of the other two cuccos told her exactly what that one must have been. Well, her plan hadn't gone exactly to plan but if experience was anything to go by that was probably just because it was a bad plan.

As she could see Poppi and Tora over there, probably scheming up a much better plan, she sent her beetle fluttering out to retrieve the bird that had gotten hit by the explosive arrow. That meant it was the Link up there that had taken the shot. The was surprising, she'd expected the giant to do it between the two of them. Maybe he expected the weird arrows he had not to trigger a revenge because he wasn't. technically, hurting them?

Luckily for her the Cucco was much smaller the Euden was, so the beetle had a mush easier time. It was able to actually pick this one up by the base and carry in through the sky back to her. She smacked the base, freeing the bird in a golden glow, just as Poppi and Tora put their own plan into action. Poppi fired off a bundle of missles, then picked up Tora and took off toward the direction of the tower. Linkle popped her head out momentarily to see the column of mist the two had created. She grabbed Euden's hand as the pair shot toward it. "C'mon, there's no better time!" She said, ducking out from behind cover and sprinting after them practically dragging Euden in her wake with the birds bringing up the rear.

Tora Poppi, with their head start and rocket boosters, reached the cloud of mist before them and as Linkle ran the whole thing started to spiral up until it became a tornado. The pair shot right out of the top, skipping all of the mountain trek that the undead were taking, then shot forward and crashed right through the tower. Linkle couldn't help it, she let out a whooping laugh at the sight of it. That was too crazy.

Of course This was a bad time to be celebrating. With the clearing of the mist Linkle could see the tower now and it's team of deadly shooters. She couldn't see Girl Micheal anywhere up there, or Link, but as she laughed she could see the giants head perk up slightly. He might have turned his giant bow on her and blasted their little group into a crater, but weirdly the big guy just seemed to...stop? Just held still. The rest of them could still clearly see her and Euden's approach but all of a sudden a bolt of lightning rained out of the clear blue sky and hit Old Micheal straight on, causing his partners to wince in surprise. The man slumped forward, and Linkle for a moment felt a sharp sting of remorse in her heart for the old timer.

Then he exploded.

The shock of the entire tower top going up in smoke brought Linkle to a standstill and sent Crossbow Micheal and Other Michel hurtling off the tower, the latter righting herself and landing somewhere off to the side while the former plummeted screaming into the moat. All sense of introspection was lost. "The Goddesses must be with us!" She shouted as she spotted Donnie rocket out and shot right up to the to of the tower on his flying disc and started to duel the giant. With every shooter hung up on something it was pretty easy to get right up to the base of the moat surrounding the mountain.

As they approached Linkle scanned the surface of the water, wary of any sort of aquatic ambush the man that had fallen in could be planning. She wondered if he could even think straight yet? She'd been caught in an explosion like that before and in had shaken her for quite a while. Still, better not to risk it. "Keep a look out. I'm going to try and get him to come up, kay?" She said to Euden. The Cucoo's seemed to get what she was going for, spreading out and scanning the surface of the moat with their beady little red eyes ready to caw a warning if they saw even a suspicious ripple.

She dipped a hand into the water and ice began to spread out over the surface. She didn't want to freeze over the entire moat. Leaving a enemy trapped under a layer of ice to drown was not only unheroic, but also incredibly lame. She still felt bad about the last time she had lamed out an opponent with water. What she was doing now wasn't dissimilar to her earlier ice wall. If Other Micheal didn't show himself before the ice spread around the entire moat she was going to leave a small hole for him to use so she could beat him while looking him in the eye like you were supposed to.

She didn't get far though, as suddenly loud crashing sound rang out. She looked up in time to see an entire portion of the tower blasted apart, the arrow that did in slamming down nearby as an avalanche of rocks spilled forth. She stood quickly, gave a sharp whistle to call her cucco's, grabbed Euden again, and dived away from the water as the rocks crashed through the ice and into the moat. She felt fist sized rocks pelt her shoulders and back as she retreated toward a small tree, skidding behind in and kneeling for cover until the avalanche had subsided.

Looking back at the devastation she didn't want to think about how that had felt for the people actually inside the tower. Rocks and wood off all shape and sizes littered the area. It would have made good cover if the shooters were still on top of the tower. She wondered briefly how crazy that fight up there must be to do something like that. Surly that was the last move, right? Who could have won?

The question was answered moments later as a trophy tumbled down from the tower, bouncing off the mountain and landing amidst the rubble. Donnie. That meant the giant was stood up there, alone, with his devastating shots. Linkle had a sudden, disturbing though; what if he decided that the tower was lost and fired one of those arrows straight down, destroying the tower and everyone within it? "We need to stop that giant." She said, staring at Donnie. "I'll get him."

She dashed out of cover, making a beeline for the nearest piece of big rubble. Unfortunately most of those were nearer to the base of the mountain, but if she could get there she would move between the rubble in order to reach Donnie and free him.
@Eviledd1984

You know, stuff they can just inherently do in the game without an item. Mario can throw a fireball, Ezio can turn on eagle vision, Megaman can charge his shot. Special moves.

It's like:

Power: Glory Kill - If Doomguy deal enough damage to an opponent to stun it and closes to melee range he can instantly, brutally kill it. Enemies killed this way always drop health pick-ups.

"I'm effectively blind, but that's got nothing to do with any of this nonsense." Said Penny as she picked her way up the beach, dragging her sword behind her as she went in the last direction she'd seen that light fly off in. She didn't know what Jude had done exactly but she had figured following that light would lead her right to the enemy, at least until it suddenly shut off and left her with nothing but blurred outlines to navigate by. Those weren't agony to look at, but they also weren't incredibly helpful.

In the end, though, it didn't seem to have mattered. Something had gone down after that last big flash of light, the sound of a bodily impact and adult voices causing her to slow her pace considerably. The voice thanking them for their distraction confirmed it, the adults had arrived and taken care of the situation. She was conflicted on that. On the one hand good, great, let someone else handle it. On the other, man Penny had really wanted to at least put one boot to that guy herself. Maybe she had, actually. "Gawain?" she called out. "Did you get him?"

"Nay." Came the reply from Gawain, sitting up from where he'd lain prone on the sand after Lou had knocked him over and then knocked him over again when he'd tried to get up like a child kicking around an action figure in frustration. Because of his armor the only real damage Gawain could have token from that was to his pride, but luckily for him didn't have the emotional capacity to reflect on his own ineffectiveness. "That ogre was a most intuitive foe. I must pay my respects!"

"I absolutely forbid that." Penny said.
