Just ran a stale yellow. Nobody on this website is doing it like me, sticking it to the man like me, blazing a trail against tyranny like me. the only thing revolutionary about you is your rhetoric

Takeru Segawa is the type of man they made myths out of. Intensely privileged to be able to say I watched him burn so bright as he did before going out with a win. I’ll miss you, hero.

A park. An open expanse typically full of greenery and other such naturely things.

I preferred "inside at home" to everything, but I couldn't deny that it sounded like a step up from "wading through a sea of other tourists here for a Guild-scale dick-measuring contest".

But, on that line of thought:

"Probably. Good chance it's packed, though, with everyone coming here like we did."

I was ashamed to admit it, but he'd managed to talk me into travelling all the way here for the sake of spectator sports. Absolutely appalling, I know, but he made the atmosphere out to be a "once-in-a-lifetime" feeling.

Not that he was technically wrong...

"Better find a map, then."

May as well hope I'm proven wrong.

Even as she made her way as far from the mean and nasty questions as she could get, I stared her down the entire way. Even if she would just take her ball and go home, that meant I won by default. Not once had she spun an alibi that held up under more than a half-second of critical thought, anyway, and from the look of things, she'd resorted already to vague threats on what I could only assume was either my life or my balls.

Because it's always one of the two, with women.

If I didn't feel such a disdain on principle towards her, I'd almost liken it to taking candy from a toddler.

"Press could just be in their pocket." I countered, affixing his impassive expression with a plain frown. I could all but see the gears in his head working.

He wanted to do something about that. Put it on that big "Ways I Should Change the World" list he'd talked about every now and again.

Hey now, don't you know that's the kind of mentality that produces despots? Really, man, you'd better know how to keep that grand ambition in check.

In any case, I returned to my usual slouch, shoving my hands back into their cozy little pockets. If I was lucky, which I can be to a surprising degree at times, I'd never run into the bitch again anyway. Left a poor taste in my mouth.

I know there's probably a few people thinking to themselves that it takes one to know one right now, and to them, I'll ask if they had paid any fucking attention to me 'till now. I know full-well I'm a bottom-feeder. Hell, I kinda take pride in being a perfect example.

Still didn't mean bottom-feeders don't disgust me.

But now I've got myself rambling. Back to the story.

I tossed my head back out towards the street proper. "Musty in here." I mumbled, explaining my reasoning for turning back out and beginning to walk.

"Haaaaaaaaah."

I really couldn't help it. It was what amounted to a conditioned response from me, whenever I was confronted of that caliber of sophistry.

Laughable. You had to be kidding me, woman! My little sister could run rings around this kind of talk, let alone myself. I can't speak for Harken, but do I honestly look so stupid to you?

Hell, now I'm insulted. And unlike a certain Light Maker, I'm gonna act upon it.

"Impressive. You're so quick at covering your bases, I didn't even ask why he was giving you the stink eye yet and you've already answered me." I continued, unperturbed and even allowing myself a smile. People always say it's an ugly one, but I couldn't help showing a bit of smugness. This was what a cat must have felt like while playing with it's food. "But that's not even your biggest mistake. Anyone with a cursory knowledge of the human body knows there's no pressure point you can 'accidentally' press to knock someone unconscious for minutes at a time."

I straightened my back some, rising up an inch or two in height as if responding to my own momentum. "You don't 'accidentally' produce that kind of force or technique, nobody does. Who do you think you're fooling? Am I expected to believe someone elected onto the Magic Council can't even control their own power?"

At this point, I was all but laughing openly as I spoke.

I'm a reader by nature. I've come across plenty books regarding medicine, anatomy, and martial arts. You do the math.

"So, unless you're saying you effectively choked him out, stop lying. It's in poor taste after that 'purity' garbage you just spewed. I mean, if you feel like that's the safer story to go with on the other hand, then..."

At that alibi, I couldn't help but smirk disdainfully, even with my eyes focused upon the pair evacuating themselves from the general area. She must have thought we were stupid.

"Oooooh, man." I said in my typical dark voice that people often wrote off as simply mumbling. Not that they would know, this is just how I speak. Low-energy, low-noise, and low-bullshit. "It must look like our first rodeo."

Really, she thought we would be so easily misled?

Come on. We may be young, but neither of us were born yesterday. And as much as I find fault with Harken's way of thinking, I can't honestly say he's stupid. He knows as well as I do when he's being lied to.

I rose, and casually ambled forward, with my usual low profile (Editor's Note: Slouch), blank expression, and hands planted in my pockets, until I had drawn up beside the Paladin Wannabe as he just finished explaining how we weren't in a guild because we didn't want to be in a guild, rather than being incapable of finding one or getting in one.

"And for the record, since I couldn't help but overhear," I said, looking the woman straight in the eye. "Everyone knows it doesn't take Light Magic to break out of simple syncope. Nor do they last longer than a few seconds without the person waking on their own."

My implications, I'm sure, were pretty clear.

"So, what really happened? Why not tell us that?"

A question halfway for show, halfway for Harken. I knew this Sayatachi wasn't gonna be likely to play along.

Her being on the Magic Council made things very interesting. It certainly made me expect her to confront my repeated questioning with what amounted to "pulling rank". Even so, I will always confront problems my own way.

Directly, maliciously, and unabashedly. Go after the facts, and go after them with fervor.

The situation, it looked, was resolved.

More or less, anyway. The important part was over, the kid had gotten back up onto his feet and had his wits about him. Lux's diplomatic savvy had won the day without need for tense confrontation. Without the need for my assistance.

Well, that was perfectly all right for me. I didn't want to work when I don't have to. I never have, and I never will.

And if I must work, being forced with no other options left and every alternative exhausted, you could be damn sure I was going to hate it.

In fact, I would hate it so much I'd have it done as quickly and efficiently as possible. That way, it would never bother me again. If I must work, I will work in a manner worth putting in the work to do work. And on that note, I flicked my eyes over a few degrees, to focus my gaze upon the man in this scene with the biggest chip on his shoulder.

The young man, that is. I don't waste energy trying to fight everyone and everything that I hate, or has wronged me ever in my life. It's an uphill battle, if the hill were a sheer cliff face.

Even after the Panacea that was Harken's magic, he was still weak in the knees as he rose. Meaning, he wasn't simply unconscious there. Something must have entered his system that ended up having a lasting effect— putting a damper on muscular control. When Harken wakes you up like that, you aren't groggy as you are in the middle of the night, when you need to go to the bathroom but slept on your leg so the lack of blood flow's made it too numb to stand on. No, you woke up instead from a day-long midsummer nap, bright and refreshed and in almost uncharacteristically good spirits.

Well, you felt good, at any rate.

Judging from that sour look he tossed rainbow-hair's way before trudging off, such was not the case here. Meaning he'd had a bone to pick with her, meaning she was likely part of the reason he had gotten up so awkwardly in the first place. There was a story to that look, and that sullen expression. I was entirely sure of it. Spectra here was either at fault, or at least receiving blame.

What was it, then? Did this lady slip the kid some roofies? Ask if he could sniff this towel for a moment, because she was pretty sure it was chloroform?

Feeling my skin crawl, I continued to keep my eye on him as the other girl, now sporting brown hair, ran after. What was that all about...

Just checking up and keeping up appearances, probably. Something like "I feel bad, so if I show concern I'll feel better about myself".

People are self-centered like that, but they just hide it behind how they express those desires. Things like "I can't just let you walk off like that," or "I'm sooooo sorry that happened.", meaning "I want to keep pressing the issue and drawing the whole thing out because I want to feel like I'm helping."

Give me a break. I don't need that kind of pity, and neither does anyone else. Don't half-ass things. Be the real you. Be genuine.

Well, that was my take on it. At any rate, they were providing a good distraction from being stared at myself.

Come on, Harken, the deed is done. Just get hungry and crave some cinnamon buns or something, already.

Get me outta here.
