Thomas instructed the bellboy to place his suitcases just inside the doorway before dismissing the hotel employee with a moderate tip. Walking deeper into the suite the Magus turned around slowly and took in the appearance of what was to become his workshop for the foreseeable future; the lavish penthouse apartment was a bit more extravagant than he was comfortable with, not to mention far too expensive, but in this situation it was far more important to choose a location for its security than comfort.

Walking over to the window which covered one wall of the room Thomas gazed out over the park; in the distance he could see the downtown area, its rather minimal skyline silhouetted against the sky, and if he were to walk over to the other window he would be able to see the forest as well. His rented apartment dominated the entire top floor of a hotel in the rich district of this small, forgotten slice of America. Why such a small town needed a luxurious hotel like this he didn’t know, perhaps to play host to wealthy investors for the mining interests this town had, but ultimately it was of little concern; he would just count it as a little bit of good fortune that it was here and also currently uninhabited.

Turning away from the window he returned to his suitcases and selected the smaller of the two, carrying it over to a coffee table and placing it down on its side. He undid the clasps and flipped it open, swiftly beginning to remove various implements, parcels and packages from its interior; he had much work to do to prepare for the upcoming war. It would take some time to make this place into a suitable workshop, much to be done before he could consider it even remotely safe from attack or detection. Much to be done; at the very least he wanted to establish the basic defences before nightfall.

He began with the bounded fields, focusing on making them undetectable rather than powerful; he had other methods of protection to rely on, ones that would not act as a beacon to anyone with the means of detecting magecraft, so he opted for subtlety over brute force. Hiding his presence was the more important than layering defences. A field to avert the eyes and make the penthouse seem uninteresting, a field to mask the use of any magecraft happening inside, a field which would hopefully go undetected for the duration of this war.

With that done he moved on to other business. He would strengthen the field later, when he had more time; the field had taken some time to establish and outside the sky was already turning orange as the sun began its descent. Luckily the next few steps were simple and quickly performed so long as the necessary preparations were made beforehand, which he had of course done; simple, but no less effective for it.

These early stages of the Grail War were perhaps the most hazardous and the most crucial; entering into the battlefield with no workshop, no knowledge of your opponents and with some of the greatest heroes in history as your adversaries. How you spent your time here could make the difference between life and death in the long run. A Magus was nothing without the proper preparation after all.

It was in his favour then, that he had already performed the most important action before leaving the UK.

“Rider; prepare yourself. Tonight we are going hunting.”
@Ryougu there should be one spot available based on the number of people who replied to the interest check. No idea what classes are available, but Saber is definitely out and Lancer and Rider both have a lot of interest.
@vancexentan having talked it over with Reflection, I'll make my Servant a Lancer for now but if his Rider gets denied then I'll snag the Rider spot.

Sorry if that makes things too complicated.
I'm still interested. I'm going to change my servant from a Lancer to a Rider though I think; he'll just be one of those Rider's like Achilles who barely uses his mount.

@vancexentan
Magus are extremely limited. Most of the powerful stuff you see them do, at least in the works I've seen, are done with the assistance of Mystic Codes anyway; Rin's Jewels, Tokiomi's staff, Kayneth's pet T1000, Kiritsugu's Magus killer bullets, all items that aren't covered by limiting the number of spells cast a day. You'll have to put a limit on those as well.

I never advocated for unlimited magic or everyone having A rank magecraft.
Alright I'm on my phone so instead if arguing further ill throw the ball in your court what would you have me do to present limits without hamstringing curse elemental and other traditional mages? No sarcasm all on you.

I'll admit I don't really know too much about Fate outside of the few anime I've watched, but I'm not sure there needs to be any limits other than "don't go too over the top/make anything too crazy". Fate is never going to be balanced, you can stop people creating God tier characters like Gilgamesh but some Servants are always going to be stronger/better in some areas and the same goes for the Magus. Someone is going to make an elemental Magus that throws around wind spells and is strong in combat, while someone else is going to make a Magus that focuses on creating Bounded Fields and performing large rituals who decides to play defensively; the former is going to win any fight between the two but the latter is well hidden and is working towards something bigger. It's all about your strategy and preparation and how you play to your strengths.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about putting a system in place for Magus. Maybe put a ban on anything you can think of that is too strong, like you have for Servants, and stamp down on any profiles that go overboard and you should be fine. Fights between Magus are likely to be rare (unless we're in Fate/Zero) and decisive when they happen; they're all weaker than Servants anyway so it's unlikely someone is going to break the RP with their Magus alone.

In other news, I'm going to try my hand at creating my own Servant and I'm officially claiming the Lancer spot.
Benkei isn't allowed be side his phantasm steals phatasms gg lancer you have no lance and no luck to fight it.

I understood it as sealing all NP's, i.e. turning the fight into a purely physical one. Same as what Achilles spear does in Apocrypha.

I won't fight that decision though, it's up to you ultimately.

Alchemy is judged on a case by case basis and is limited by how much stuff you carry and can be based on that also rin and kayneth are high tier mages run gas all affinities and kayneth has years of training.

Kayneth and Rin are geniuses, but that's beside my point. Most Magus we see don't really use a standard set of spells, which is what your system seems to imply.
@vancexentan so the Lancer's I was looking at are Romulus, who I'm going to go ahead and guess is going to be too powerful, and Benkei, who has an instant kill Noble Phantasm but not one that auto-hits.

My issue with the DnD system is that it seems to be based on the idea that all of the Masters are going to be using fairly standard magecraft, like Gandr or element manipulation, when most of the Magus we see don't use that. Rin uses magecraft stored in jewels, jewels that take time to make and are expensive; her magecraft is powerful but is already limited by the fact she had a limited supply she can't easily replenish. Kayneth has a giant metal blob he controls, Kiritsugu has Magus killing bullets, the Matou's control bugs and Waver doesn't fight ever. None of these really fit into the idea of having a set number of casts of each spell per day.
I'm tentatively interested in this; I'm trying to learn more about Fate so why not throw myself into this.

What would you consider to be an over-powered Servant in this case, i.e. what kind of Servants are you banning? It is ones that have high stats/powerful NPs, NPs that are instant-kill or unfair or just ones that can potentially derail the RP? Because the first two seem like they can just be written around pretty easily. I'm thinking about taking the Caster class but both of the Servants I am interested in are likely to be banned, the first for being too powerful the second for having a sort of instant-kill NP. Maybe I'll make my own.

Also, how exactly are Masters going to work in this RP? In the FAQ you mention a DnD style system where you can only use spells are certain number of times a day which doesn't seem to fit what little I know about Type-Moon style Magus' at all.

@vancexentan
You have used a Mana Crystal. MP is fully restored.
1 Mana Crystal remaining.
System:Oberon

Crushing one of the mana crystals he held to restore his mana, Oberon let himself drift down from the ceiling as he watched a small group of Goblin’s head in his direction, their progress clearly visible from the torches two of their number held. This was not the group whom Mourningstar had fired upon, nor the group who had killed the other Wisp, but judging from the speed at which they moved and the way that they were heading straight in his direction it seemed clear that they knew someone was over here.

There was a commotion of some kind off in the direction of the entrance that suggested that someone else had also had a run in with the Goblins, but a look towards that area showed him nothing; nonetheless Digbie ran off towards the source of the noise and Mourningstar went after him, leaving Oberon by himself to face the oncoming Goblin’s. The small party didn’t change direction to follow them which meant the Goblin’s either didn’t see the two leave or they had seen and where targeting him specifically.

He should probably assume it was the latter, if only because it was the worst case scenario and it paid to be prepared for the worst. So, what could he do? If they had really seen him then he couldn’t hide; they would find him eventually. He could try and run, but unless they lost sight of him they would likely just continue to chase him and without knowing where everyone else was he didn’t want to accidentally lead the Goblin’s to one of his allies.

Although, if done intelligently that probably wasn’t a bad idea honestly; leading the Goblin’s towards his allies so that they could face them together was probably the smart decision right now. Even so he didn’t think he could do it. If they had planned for something like this beforehand then maybe but they hadn’t. Leading these enemies into an ambush was one thing but when the supposed ambushers didn’t know they were supposed to be ambushing someone then he would just be putting people in danger. Fighting them by himself seemed like a bad idea but Oberon didn’t want to be responsible for anyone else getting hurt; at least he knew he could shield and heal himself if anything went wrong, not to mention fly away.

The torches were closer now, close enough that Oberon could see more about the Goblin party heading his way. There were only three of them, two with torches and one without, and they were all armed. It didn’t appear that any of them were carrying shields however, so firing at them from a distance was a viable tactic; even if they did have shields he was sure his Mana Dart would have made short work of any makeshift shield anyway given what he had seen it do to that rock earlier.

It seemed his course of action was set.

Taking a bracing breath, Oberon dropped even lower and began to fly towards the Goblin party, casting Shield III on himself as he did so. He approached cautiously, maintaining a distance from the ground that should keep him out of the range of their spears, unless they decided to throw them, but making no effort to try and hide his approach; not that it would matter much anyway if they already knew where he was to begin with.

When he was almost on top of them he stopped, hovering above them and raising both hands in front of him. Concentrating on the image of a small and narrow projectile Oberon cast a Mana Dart at the first torch wielding Goblin before turning and firing a second at the other torch bearer.
