Clicking the lock into place Sora stepped away from the bike rack and admired his handiwork, giving the bike a quick pull to make sure it was secure. Walking through the front gate of the park and following the path he was soon able to find and catch-up to the others, arriving just in time to catch the last of what Saito said about ink and Suzue being in charge.

“I can breathe smoke.” At least that was all he knew he could do right now. In all honesty it wasn’t the most useful ability unless he was trying to pacify a bee hive or summon the fire department; in his opinion, none of their powers were particularly useful when it came to tracking down a Yokai in the middle of the woods, though a few of them might be useful once it came to subduing whatever it was. If nothing else they could just throw Akira at it and have the boy wrestle the thing to the ground.

Aside from the issue of finding the creature however, there was another factor about this whole exercise that came to mind that might make things more difficult. “One thing we need to keep in mind; whatever this thing is knows we’re coming. It was brought here specifically so we could try to capture it. We’re not going to be able to sneak up on it.”

Sora turned to their club captain. He couldn’t help but wonder what Saito’s motivation was in setting up this little exercise; it was too early to call this training, when they had only just gotten their abilities and most of them were still trying to come to grips with all of this. So was this a test to see how well they could perform under pressure and without guidance? Why did it feel like they were being thrown into the fire?

Maybe he was just being paranoid, but something told him that they weren’t expected to actually succeed here today.

It could be that Sora was just overreacting though. Truth was he was still angry about the method by which their captain had brought them here and the letter than had shaken up his life unnecessarily; things would have been a lot less tense and nerve wracking over the past few weeks had Saito been a little more upfront in approaching him. It might be unfair but the whole ordeal had given Sora a bad impression of their captain and he couldn’t help but mistrust him.

A determined individual who is not easily swayed by others and someone with the fortitude to forge his own path and follow his own goals even if others seek to place obstacles in his path, yet savvy enough to toe the line and not make enemies unnecessarily. Just social acumen was needed to survive in the Golden Dawn, especially when he is seen as such a… controversial figure by many.

Bio: Thomas comes from a long line of Magus; not the most impressive line, not the oldest and their name hasn’t always been Gardner, but Thomas’ family have been practitioners of Witchcraft in Europe and Britain since the middle ages, engaging in both sides of the art as both black witches focused on curses and hexes and white witches focused on protection from the former.

Even with this age the Gardner Magic Crest is not as well developed as it could be. Being a witch in Britain has always been a hazardous occupation and the family has been forced into hiding a number of times over the years as the craze of witch-hunting rose and fell in popularity. In particular the writing of the Witchcraft Act of 1604 was nearly the death of the Gardner line and their Magic Crest was nearly lost during this period.

Thankfully they managed to outlast the witch hunters and the family survived, although diminished. Over time they began to recover and the complexity of their crest grew in leaps and bounds although it wasn’t until Thomas’s grandfather and great grandfather that the family truly began to flourish. They are the ones mostly responsible for making the family what it is, at least in terms of wealth and influence. Though it was also his grandfather than nearly ruined them.

Thomas’ grandfather joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn after being invited to be a member by another magus via their joint association with the Clocktower. Being a talented Magus in his own right his grandfather quickly rose through the ranks but was at the same time a controversial figure who upset a lot of people by publishing books on occultism. The books were complete nonsense which he saw as both a way to make money while also having some fun but others in both the Golden Dawn and the Clocktower saw it as potentially threatening to reduce the amount of mystery in the world by revealing secrets about Magecraft. In the end he was acquitted and no punishment was given, but the Gardner name was forever tarnished by the accusations.

This controversy has directly affected Thomas as well and means that a number of people within the order have taken a disliking to him on principle. It doesn’t help that his style of Magecraft is seen by some as out-dated, archaic or even barbaric in nature; it seems even Magi are not immune to developing certain stigmas around witchcraft. There have been numerous occasions where people have tried to question whether or not his family should even be allowed to keep their association with the order, citing his grandfather’s past discretions as reasons, and whether or not Thomas and his obsolete style of magecraft can possibly contribute anything of worth to the order.

This did not prevent him from climbing the ranks to become a member of the highest order of the Golden Dawn, as progress through the ranks is determined by skill and learning rather than politics, but he had to fight his way through opposition most of the way.

When Thomas first received his Command Seals he tried to keep it a secret, but it was not long before others found out and the expected arguing began. There were many who sought to argue against his participation in the Holy Grail war, that he should not be allowed to represent their order, even going so far as to suggest that the seals should be removed and given to someone else. Rather than argue in his own defence or try to convince the order to sanction his participation in the Holy Grail war Thomas opted to simply leave; he acquired a suitable catalyst from the Golden Dawn by what some would consider theft and headed for America, lacking the resources of the order to which he may or may not still be a member but backed by the considerable wealth of his family.

The target feels no pain and the quantities of blood being extracted are so small as to cause no negative effects to the target.

Image Capturing Glasses – A simple pair of glasses capable of capturing and storing an image of whatever the wearer is observing at any given time and recalling that image when requested.

Amplifier Staff – A simple amplification style Mystic Code resembling an ornate cane or walking stick. Intended to be used to strengthen Thomas’ elemental magecraft in particular should he ever need to get his hands dirty.

In other words, he was one of the candidates to substitute the King after his fall. He is the bearer of the sister-sword to Excalibur, Excalibur Galatine. However, in his blind adoration for the King, he remained unaware of the King's agony. A loyal knight just like Sir Bedivere who took care of King Arthur in his final moments, but unlike Bedivere who wished for the King to attain happiness as a person from the bottom of his heart, Gawain wished for him to flourish as a king. Unmindful of such evaluation and intentions from those who surrounded him, Sir Gawain remained as King Arthur's right-hand to the end.

He never looked down on his enemies. Needless to say, he also never insults his enemies, confronting them with politeness and maintaining his fighting spirit and resolve even when the opponent lacks capacity. Remaining under the shadow of the King, he gallantly proceeds to the battlefield once the command is given and triumphs with a refreshing smile. Naturally, he was described as the ideal knight. His greatest regret was his dispute with Sir Lancelot. He was a knight who was equal to Sir Lancelot but was also incompatible with him, unable to forget that Lancelot killed his brothers, Gareth and Gaheris. With a pure personality, he was an ideal young warrior and thus his affection towards his relatives was greater than in others.

But in the end, King Arthur forgave Sir Lancelot; "I was at fault for everything". Gawain, however, never forgave Sir Lancelot's betrayal and remained hostile towards him to the end. That grudge not only cost Sir Gawain's status as a knight, but in the end even played a part in the King's ruin. Sir Gawain continued to reject Sir Lancelot when he attempted to participate in the Battle of Camlann even after being excommunicated and, consequentially, caused the death of both the King and himself.

During King Arthur's final battle at the hill of Camlann, Sir Gawain died after being struck by Mordred in an old wound inflicted by Sir Lancelot. Just as King Arthur reproached himself in the hill of Camlann, Sir Gawain, too, cried in his deathbed. His passion invited the King to death. He regretted that his grudge invited the ruin of the King and accepted his enmity towards Sir Lancelot - and even Lancelot's disloyalty - as coming from his own lack of virtue. Although his ending that did not help the king in the legend, that loyalty was sincere to the very end.

Thus, he was brought back as a Heroic Spirit. From this conclusion, the Heroic Spirit Gawain seems to perceive "being of assistance to the king" as his absolute mission. Now set free from all doubts, Sir Gawain regained his proper figure as a literal Knight of the Sun. Having become a Servant while retaining such an oath in his heart in order to correct his mistake, the regret of his past life, Sir Gawain serves his Master as an even more perfect "knight". All for the sake of becoming the cornerstone of a single, lonely king.

That grudge not only cost Sir Gawain's status as a knight, but in the end even played a part in the King's ruin. Sir Gawain continued to reject Sir Lancelot when he attempted to participate in the Battle of Camlann even after being excommunicated and, consequentially, caused the death of both the King and himself.

During King Arthur's final battle at the hill of Camlann, Sir Gawain died after being struck by Mordred in an old wound inflicted by Sir Lancelot. Just as King Arthur reproached himself in the hill of Camlann, Sir Gawain, too, cried in his deathbed. His passion invited the King to death. He regretted that his grudge invited the ruin of the King and accepted his enmity towards Sir Lancelot - and even Lancelot's disloyalty - as coming from his own lack of virtue. Although his ending that did not help the king in the legend, that loyalty was sincere to the very end.

Thus, he was brought back as a Heroic Spirit. From this conclusion, the Heroic Spirit Gawain seems to perceive "being of assistance to the king" as his absolute mission. Now set free from all doubts, Sir Gawain regained his proper figure as a literal Knight of the Sun. Having become a Servant while retaining such an oath in his heart in order to correct his mistake, the regret of his past life, Sir Gawain serves his Master as an even more perfect "knight". All for the sake of becoming the cornerstone of a single, lonely king.

Magic Resistance B - Magic Resistance grants protection against magical effects. Differing from the Resistance effect that merely rejects Magical Energy, this ability cancels the spells altogether. At B rank this skill will cancel spells with a chant below three verses. Even if targeted by High-Thaumaturgy and Greater Rituals, it is difficult for them to be affected.

Riding B - Riding is a Class Skill of Rider and Saber class Servants, denoting the ability to ride mounts and vehicles. Rider-class Servants will typically possess a high rank. It is said that dragon type mounts are an exception, requiring a different ability other than Riding. At B rank this skill allows most vehicles and animals to be handled with above average skill, even vehicles that did not exist in the time period one was alive in, for they are no exception. However, cannot ride the likes of Phantasmal Species such as Monstrous Beasts.

Personal Skills:

Charisma E - Charisma is a composite Skill consisting of a person's charm as well as the natural talent to command or unify an army or country. Increases the ability of allies during group battles. In the case of Sir Gawain, this resulted in a 'Natural Knight' against whom no one could object.

Numeral of the Saint EX - Numeral of the Saint is a condition unique to Sir Gawain's existence. Only during the three hours between 9 AM and midday and the three hours between 3 PM and sunset, Gawain's power increases three-fold. This was related to the ancient belief that the numeral '3' was the sacred number of the Celtic gods.

Description: Differing from Excalibur's centralized slash of light that destroys castles, Galatine brings forth a broad wave, radiation-type attack that completely annihilates an enemy army. Its sun characteristic is reflected in its activation like rays of heat from the sun. Gawain tosses the sword into the air where the pseudo sun inside creates a miniature sun before landing back in his grasp. While the sun floats overhead, he generates a large magic circle with a sun symbol in the center under him as he draws the sword behind his back. With a motion like drawing a sword, the pseudo sun, and the energy put into it, the attack extends as far as it is possible to visualize the blade of the sword, around thirteen kilometers, like its prototype, Caladbolg. He unleashes a horizontal slash of flame that pierces through the enemy and erupts into a giant ball of fire that engulfs them.

@Dezuel I don't think I've ever seen a Rider who didn't have a horse/chariot/something else that they could summon. I agree with your point about not needing to be a Rider to have the riding skill, in fact most knights have decent Riding skills without being in the Rider class (it's actually a Class skill of Sabers as well), though not being in the Rider class does limit what they can do with this skill. But a Rider who doesn't have anything to ride strikes me as odd.

Usually to be summoned in a class you would need to met the prerequisites or that class; you can't be a Caster without being able to cast a few spells, you can't be a Saber without a sword and, I would assume, you can't be a Rider without a mount. That said I'm not sure whether the prerequisite for being a Rider is having a mount or just having a high Riding skill, since I think Lancer Arthoria's profile says something to the effect of "This rank is high enough to have aptitude for the Rider Class" despite not having a mount Noble Phantasm.

@floodtalon I spent some time reading through the wiki pages on magecraft and related materials. Its... confusing, but I have a general idea of how it all works. Unfortunately the wiki has a lot of information on how magecraft works from a lore perspective and very little in the way of examples of what mages can actually do.

As far as Servants go I'll probably just use an existing one, unless I think of a hero I really want to use.

I'm tempted to join this. Whether or not I do will probably be dependent on whether I can come up with a Master; I really don't know much about how magic works in the Fate universe.

@Reflection will this be a standard war with 7 master/servant pairs? The top post mentioned masters being made en mass so I wasn't sure.
