@TheNoCoKid Any restrictions on the kind of spirits our characters can have? Aside from normal ghosts there are also Sacred spirits, that have been around long enough to have become stronger, and Kami-class spirits like the ones Jeanne and the guys from Gandhara had.

Yeah, fair enough. Maybe I'm just over-estimating how difficult it would be to drag someone.

Kitsune

Her elbow caught the underside of the thugs chin and his head snapped backwards. He recovered quickly and moved towards her again, but Kitsune hooked his leg out from under him and sat him on the ground; his dizziness caught up to him and he didn’t try to get up again after that, apparently accepting his defeat.

It was a quieter night than the one before, but the abductors were still out and looking for prey. Word had spread apparently, because there were fewer people on the streets, fewer people for them to grab, but it still took less than an hour for her to stumble across them; another van, the same motley crew of hired muscle in generic dark clothing, two plus a third in the diver seat. Same as before, minus the homeless person being dragged into the back this time; she’d caught them before it got to that point this time, thankfully.

All three know lay on the ground, in various states of consciousness, while Kitsune nursed fresh bruises on her arms and cheek; she was pretty sure her mask was cracked. It was harder to fight when you were constraining your movements so as to not pop your stitches. Maybe she should have given it a few more days before doing this again, but even the two days she gave herself to rest was starting to make her itch to do this again. Putting on a mask and walking around at night, getting into fights; it felt… right wasn’t it. Not good either, she wasn’t a thrill seeker and she didn’t enjoy hurting people or getting hurt. It just felt… normal. Routine.

The same antsiness she used to feel if she didn’t exercise for a couple days she would now feel if she didn’t do this.

She should probably be concerned about that. Would have been, if she didn’t know that a large part of it was just a feeling of responsibility. The first time she had done this she hadn’t been sure it was a good idea or even necessary; how much of a difference could she make, powers or not? How much crime could there really be, that it was worth wandering around at night hoping to run into trouble. A lot, as it turned out. Enough to keep her busy. Enough to make this worthwhile. A few months of this and there were dozens if not hundreds of people out there she could claim to have ‘saved’; people that she had kept from losing their wallets, or more, and all she did was patrol a few blocks a few nights a week.

Every time she took a few nights off, needed to take a few nights off, it felt like a waste of time. How many people would get hurt, because she broke a bone and couldn’t be out there? How many people had been abducted in the past two days?

Her ability or willingness to interrogate people hadn’t improved since last time, so she didn’t try. A swift kick saw the man in front of her knocked out for the time being, giving her a chance to search their van and look for… something. Investigating wasn’t her strong suit, but since the run in with Grim the other night it was clear that just beating these guys up wasn’t going to solve anything; she needed to find out who these guys worked for, where they were taking people and then tackle the issue at the source. Or more likely just turn over what she found to the police and let people supposedly more qualified deal with it.

It was probably too much to hope for to find a folder with ‘secret plans’ written on it in the glove box, but as she hopped into the passenger seat and began looking around Kitsune was at least expecting to find something with a name or an address written on it. No luck on that front, unfortunately; just some old receipts, a parking ticket, a gun. Nothing useful. Climbing over the gear stick into the driver’s seat, Kitsune reached for the smartphone that was mounted on the dashboard to use as a GPS. It was still on, but wasn’t set to lead anywhere at the moment; opening the saved addresses produced only a single entry and when selected, provided a route that seemed to lead towards the more industrial side of town. A warehouse?

----

Technically speaking, Akeno didn’t have a valid licence for the vehicle she was driving. Although given that the van was also stolen and that she’d just physically assaulted three men and left them on the street, driving without a licence was probably the least illegal thing she would do tonight.

The warehouse that the GPS was pointed to was pretty far away and at the cautious pace she was driving it would take her a while to get there. Her plan once she did was just to scope the place out from a distance, wait until she found or saw something incriminating and then call the police with an anonymous tip. Ideally she would call in a hero or two as well, but she didn’t have any way of contacting any that she knew of. Maybe she could look around and see if any of them had an online presence for things like that. Did Grim have social media? He seemed like the type to have social media. Probably ran his own fan sites.

She was about halfway there when she saw the smoke.

Pulling into the almost empty parking lot, gravel crunching under the tires, she saw the burning building with acrid black smoke pouring out of the broken windows. She couldn’t even tell what the building was for, the sign above the door obscured by flames and smoke, only that whatever it was before didn’t matter; the building was done for.

Opening the door she hopped out and approached the only other people she could see; an elderly Asian woman and a younger woman bleeding out on the pavement.

“Hey! What happened here?”

Perhaps she's immune to fire damage due to her abilities?

Yeah, she is; otherwise she'd burn herself with her own powers. That's not an issue.

Smoke inhalation and the logistics of trying to carry someone twice your size are the main problems.

Debating whether I should have Kitsune go to the ceramics factory or the burning building. Someone should probably help Bouncer pull her friends out of the fire, but I don't know how a mostly regular woman can realistically drag two people bigger than her out when a super human couldn't.
A shard of pure starlight pierced through the night sky, flying in a straight line between buildings towards the rooftop Nico was fighting on. It struck the eye of the snake that had suddenly appeared out of nowhere and pierced that too; the image began to disperse, then fell apart completely as a second shard impacted a moment after the first.

“POW! Nailed it!”

Half a block away, Shun lowered her bow and turned around with a bright smile on her face and an expectant glint in her eye. “Did you see that? Hey! Where did you go?” The rooftop behind her was empty, so she hopped down from the edge of the building and went in search of her missing audience. “Here kitty, kitty, kitty.” A soft meow from the left had her turning again to see a black cat staring at her with an unimpressed expression. Shun smiled again, striking a pose with her bow and flashing a victory sign with her other hand. The cat flicked its tail, but otherwise ignored her.

Shun deflated.

“That’s it? Come on, you dragged me all the way across these buildings to this fight and we made it just in time. The least you can do is loo-hey!”

The cat stood and leapt off the building. Hurrying to the edge, Shun looked down onto the see the cat staring up at her from the next roof over. Shun looked back, gazing into oval pupils and feeling herself gradually lose the staring match. She raised an eyebrow. “You want me to go over there? I fight better from a distance you know.” The cat turned to leave. “Alright fine! I’ll follow you. Stupid, bossy cat.”

Tentatively interested, depending on how this shapes up.

Akeno Kudo

She ended up not going to the hospital in the end. Instead Akeno had taken the first aid kit offered to her by Grim’s drone and dealt with her injury herself, making her way to a public restroom where she spent an hour trying to treat her wound in the grimy mirror under the wavering light of a fluorescent bulb on its last legs. Not the best conditions to be administering first aid in, especially when she wasn’t even trained, and the result reflected that; an uneven line of stitches stretching across the side of her stomach, an inch or so below her ribs that would undoubtedly leave a scar.

Turning, she stared at the jagged mark in the mirror, the one in her dorm room this time, and sighed. Yeah, it was going to be a nasty scar. Not the smartest decision she had ever made, nor the most pleasant.

Perhaps she should have just gone to the ER after all and spare herself the discomfort. That would mean having to answer questions though, like explaining how she got stabbed in the first place; they might even have alerted the police and after the conversation with Grim she was feeling a little wary of having that kind of attention sent her way. She could just tell them she had been mugged or assaulted and that the attacker had brandished a knife; it wouldn’t even be that much of a lie. It would have been a risk though; particularly if they looked at her medical history and realised this wasn’t her first time making a late night visit to the ER that year. She’d dislocated her wrist a few months earlier and had to get it checked out, and then there was that other time she thought she’d broken her ribs only to be told they were just bruised.

No, it had been the right decision to do things herself. People might start to ask questions if she kept making late night visits to the emergency room; it was bad enough when people in her classes or her dorm mates gave her funny looks because of all the bruises and scratches she showed up with. Cheaper than the hospital too, which was a factor she hadn’t considered when she first started wearing a mask to beat up bad guys.

Being a hero was expensive, even when your costume was monochrome gym gear and you didn’t have any fancy gadgets.

Hearing her phone ring in the other room, she let her tank top fall down to cover the scar and exited the bathroom; at least it the kind of thing she could hide under her clothes. She picked up her mobile from her desk where she had left it, next to an open textbook and the paper that she definitely wasn’t going to be able to finish in time. A glance at the screen showed her the call was from exactly who she had expected, but she still hesitated for a second before answering. After a moment to steel herself she accepted the call and held the phone to her ear, the person on the other end greeting her in Japanese; the tone of their voice already judgemental and exasperated before the conversation had even started.

Hi mom.”Akeno responded in Japanese of her own, it was the only language her mom spoke after all, but she managed to keep the exasperation she felt in kind out of her voice. Well, she tried to at least, if only to make these calls end a little sooner. They didn’t happen too often, once every two weeks as they had agreed upon, but Akeno definitely saw it as a chore to get over with rather than something to look forward to. She had a feeling her mother felt the same way.

Yes, I’m fine. Classes are going well… no, I haven’t changed major yet… I like what I’m studying.” Distance had done nothing to improve their relationship, which had been cold even before she had left home. “It’ll be fine. I’ve got time to figure things out… yes I do… yes, I do. It’s only my second year… I’m changing the subject.

She paced around the room as she spoke, able to hold a conversation like this while only half paying attention by now. Walking over to her desk she let her eyes scan over the unfinished paper, remaindering herself of where she had left off and how much more she had left to do. “Yes, I’m still taking karate… yes, I have time for it… I told you, classes are going fine… if I drop karate it’ll be because I want to take something else instead. Judo or wrestling or something… no, it’s… I’m changing the subject… how’s dad? Is he there?

Why her mom didn’t just let her dad handle these calls she didn’t know; it had barely been five minutes and they had already had to change topics twice to avoid a fight and they were both getting heated. Her dad at least was someone she wouldn’t mind hearing from every now and then, even if he wasn’t the most talkative type. Maybe because he wasn’t the talkative type. Of course, that would deprive her mom of the opportunity to pry and poke her way into her life, her opportunity to disapprove. “Hmm… and how’s Daisuke.

Asking her about her brother gave her another minute or two to pace around her room and get things ready for tonight. A couple days to recover were enough for her and she was feeling restless just staying in her dorm each night; her costume was repaired, the stitch job on her shirt a little neater than the one on her side, and she’d washed the blood out. It lay on her bed now, spread out with her mask resting on top of the shirt. She was ready.

Mom, I’ve got to go now. I’ve got plans tonight… just plans… no, not with anyone… no… no… n-I’m hanging up now.
