Delving Deeper

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Brian is usually seen as a bright and happy young boy, with a passion for animals, large or small. Growing up in Australia, he is use to dealing with creatures that might try to kill him on a daily basis, so when someone else might freak out over a tiny spider, he’d be the one setting it free into the wild. He tends to be friendly to all, and very outgoing. He isn’t very fond of fighting, and will try to break it up with a joke. He seems to have a varied sense of humor, and likes to make people laugh and smile, just like he seems to be doing.

However, this is just the mask he puts on daily. Inside, Brian is in mourning, and a very lost soul. He is different in his family, and is resented by some of them. He does not let his sadness or anger show very often, since he was usually bright and sunny as a small child, and want to keep that up. However, the mask will start crumbling at some point. He is working with a therapist over the summers to help him, however, he doesn’t enjoy talking about this side of him, and unless probed, his mask will stay.

H I S T O R Y

Brian was born to his mother and father in the lovely country of Australia. His father was an American transplant who met his mother, and fell in love. The two were married quickly and chose to stay in Australia after Brian’s mother found out she was pregnant. One child later, they had Brian, and the family of four was happy.

Brian’s mother worked at a quokka sanctuary, and brought her youngest son to work with her often. Brian bonded with the animals there, and adopted their smile as his own. He grew close to one at the age of seven, one named Steve. He wished to bring the animal home as a pet, but it was decided that it would be a poor plan, so he visited the sanctuary often to play with Steve. Brian displayed some occasional oddities, but they were brushed off.

Everything changed one day when Brian was almost eight. While going to pick up his older brother from rugby practice, his parents and himself were involved in a fatal accident. Had it not been for Brian’s magic, he probably would have been killed as well. His parents car was slammed off the road by a huge semi-truck, and they also hit a grove of trees. When Brian woke up, the first thing he saw was his parents, dead, in the front seats of the car. When the police arrived at the scene, they found the eight year old boy trying desperately to wake his parents.

For a few months after the accident Brian refused to do much of anything. He sat in his room, barely ate, and refused to speak. It was only after his older brother mentioned Steve, that he started to perk up. His aunt and uncle, whom had gotten custody of the two boys, brought Brian to the quokka sanctuary that Brian started talking, but only to Steve. Realizing that the young boy would only open up to the creature, his aunt and uncle started on the paperwork for them to bring the two young boys and the quokka back to the United States with them. There were quite a few legal battles, and paperwork issues, but they finally got the permission, two years later.

By then the ten year old was displaying more acts of magic, that stumped his guardians, brother and his older female cousin. She had grown to resent how much attention Brian was getting from her parents. She tried to claim he was making it all up, and that he was fine. She started picking on him when no one was around, calling him names, and telling him he was all alone since he only had a dumb animal as a friend.

Then next year his whole family was surprised when a young witch showed up from Salem Witchs’ Institue. She informed them of Brian’s gift and went through all the things they would need to know for young Brian and him starting at the new school that year. This put the final nail in the coffin for Brian and his cousin to ever get along. She started calling him freak, and making fun of him. However, once he got to school he started putting on a mask of happiness and friendliness and made friends amongst his peers. He much prefers being at school than home.

Christina Fields- Paternal Aunt. One of Brian and Anthony, or Tony’s guardians. She doesn’t quite understand magic, but tries to make sure Brian feels like he is fitting in when he is home.
Mark Fields- Uncle by marriage. One of Brian and Tony’s guardians. He is usually busy with work, so isn’t home around much. Not fond of Steve the quokka.
Misty Fields- Cousin. At eighteen, she is an angry teenager that hates her two younger cousins, claiming they took her parents from her. She especially resents Brian, since he needs the most care and attention. She tries to claim he is making up his problems, but is usually silence. Will make fun of Brian and pick on him when they are alone.

Samantha could not believe what she was hearing out of Emma Standiford’s mouth. The school, a place she had called home for many many years, where she had gotten her own education, fed off of the students abilities. Her hormones, already in flux due to her pregnancy, and also being muddled with earlier, were in overdrive.

“You’ve always known, and yet have kept this school open? And full of people for it to eat!? What kind of monster are you Emma!”

“It’s not as easy as all of that Samantha.” The Headmistress looked tired. This morning she had looked her normal hardy self, but the last few hours had drained years from her. “I wish I could explain it in a way that would make everything better, but I can’t. This place...” She shook her head and trailed off. Her voice was quiet and didn’t carry like it would normally, as such only those closest to her could hear her, especially her next words. “Is the monster.”

“So, has everyone that has died here in an ‘accident’ or ‘mysterious circumstance’ been this school’s snack? And you are just okay with it? Why let students in if you’re just going to toss them to the school, or do you just not care? Is this some sick joke to you?” Samantha was well aware that most of the students were watching her yell at the headmistress at this point, but didn’t care. She had lost someone, and now she knew why. This damn fucking school.

“I’ve never been okay with it. I would love to have never been here. To never know that someone would die next. That could be the best life, but it isn’t that simple Samantha. I can’t just turn the school off if there’s no one here.” The woman was starting to look flustered, that was a first.

Samantha narrowed her eyes at Emma and then let out a frustrated growl. “You will explain everything to me later, but right now, it seems we need to implement some new damn rules around here to make sure we don’t lose anymore students.” She turned towards the bleachers and let out a cough to get their attention.

“I know many of you are most likely distressed and upset to being stranded here, but for now, we need to all work together to figure a way out of here. I know for many of you Miss Snow left you a clue of sorts, to help us figure out a way out. However, do not go pursue these clues on your own. From now on, I want everyone to be in groups of two or more, preferably of three. Curfew is redacted, and classes are most likely cancelled. Emma, don’t you even dare try to argue with me on this. However, don’t do anything stupid, and please, keep yourselves safe, in every meaning of the word.” She looked up at some of the older students as she said this. “We teachers will still be here, but not in the teaching capacity. If you don’t feel safe, come to us, and we will help you. We want to get the hell out of here as much as you do.”

Samantha could just hear Emma’s voice behind her, “A splendid plan.” It carried no notes of sarcasm. Samantha let out a small sigh. Sure, it wasn’t much of a plan, but it would do, for now.

As Nina was tugging on her jacket her phone buzzed to life. She saw two texts, one from Tessa, and one from Ash. She smiled, and typed out responses.

”T-I’ll be there in a few minutes. Just gotta walk/ bus over.-<3 N”

”Ash, just hope on by anytime after 3:30, I’ll be there working. As I said, cocoa on me. -<3 N.”

She hit the send button and headed downstairs. ”I’ll see you later!” She cried out as she left the house and walked the all familiar route to the bus stop. One bus ride later, she was at the Verona clinic doors. She frowned to herself for a moment, and paused. She knew there were a few other people in the clinic she wanted to talk to, but at that moment, Tessa was the important one to her. She pushed in through the doors and went up to the front desk. After arguing with the nurse there for a moment, she was directed to Tessa’s room. She knocked on the door and waited for a reply.

“Come in.” Tessa’s voice was just loud enough for Nina to hear. When she stepped into the room Tessa was sitting up, a nurse at her side.

“Well we should be able to discharge you now.” The nurse said with a nod. “Most of the kids are out now. Glad to see you’re feeling better. I’ll leave you two alone and get the paperwork started with your mom.”

Nina stepped in and smiled, and took the seat next to the bed Tessa was on. ”Thank you. I appreciate that.” The nurse smiled and nodded and left the room. Nina turned to look at Tess. ”So, aside from the probably massive headache you have, how are you doing?”

“A little bloodied on the arms, but I’ll be fine. They were talking about sending me to the hospital to have brain scans but I assured them there was no need for that.” Tessa rolled her eyes slightly. “Couldn’t have them scanning my brain and finding out I was different. How about you? How are you and Petyr?”

”We’re both fine. Mostly just scratches and the like, but traumatized for life. I’m never going to another party ever again.” Nina sighed and leaned back in the chair and closed her eyes for a moment. ”Petyr told me briefly what happened with you guys, but you wanna fill in some blanks for me?”

Tessa gave a slight shiver, at the memory of the night before. “Yeah I don’t think I’ll be going to any parties any time soon again.” She paused and looked at Nina, fear written clearly in her features. “Someone was actively trying to kill us. I don’t know how we all got away, but he was chasing us. And I think he has powers like us. More importantly I would say he used at least two that he copied from Grant and Alice.”

”Well… that’s… fuck.” Nina leaned forward to look at Tess and took her hand. ”You gonna be okay?”

“Eventually.” She gave a slight shrug. “I’ll talk to my therapist, obviously well edited.” Tessa stood up, and pulled the clothes her mom had left for her on the chair over to her. “One sec, let me change.”

Nina nodded and turned away to let Tessa change. ”I should probably also talk to a therapist, but… y’know… But yeah. Someone was trying to kill us as well. They were using Jade as some like kinda puppet thing to, well, burn us all into nothing. She can manipulate freaking lava Tess. And… I just kinda stood there like an idiot.”

Tessa was nodding as she exited the bathroom from changing. “I totally understand. At first I was frozen with fear. And then I just hid. I went invisible and didn’t help anyone.” She paused. “That’s the other power the shadow guy was using. Emotional manipulation. I’ve never been so scared and confused in my life. It was strongest when he was near, and King was passed out most of that time, so it couldn’t have been him.”

”I think that’s what was happening to Jade. It was like whomever was doing this was using all her hidden emotions against her. Or I assume hidden emotions, I mean, she yelled at me, but her target was Ali’s new girlfriend. Scout took the brunt of it for her, apparently she has like shield powers. But, so there’s like a person who can use our powers against us? Well… fuck.” Nina started tugging on her piercings, not liking the thought of someone out there able to use her fire power against her.

“This isn’t good.” Tessa frowned. “We’re all in danger. We should make sure we stick together as much as possible. One of us alone would be an easy target.”

”I agree. I don’t think I could stand it if I lost either you or Petyr.” Nina continued to tug on her piercings. ”At least at school we’ll have each other, but outside… you said you were super grounded right? Can you still have friends over?”

“I might be able to convince mom, but only after I convince my therapist that it’s for the best. He’s got some good sway with mom.” There was a knock at the door and then Tessa’s mom stepped in.

“Okay you’re discharged officially now. I’ve got to go to the office.” She sighed a bit at that, glanced at Nina. “Hello Nina, you doing okay?”

”I’m doing alright Mama Gray. Just wanted to come and see how Tessa was doing.” Nina said, standing up and looking at Tessa’s mom. The woman gave her a gentle smile.

“I’m glad to hear that. Nina will you do me a huge favor?” She asked after a second of thinking.

”What is it Mama Gray?”

“Will you make sure Tessa goes straight home from here? No detours or meeting with anyone. I’d have her grandma pick her up, but she’s being particularly ornery right now.”

”Sure. I have some time before work. Besides, I enjoy spending time with Tess.” Nina half smiled over at her friend.

“Excellent thank you.” Tessa’s mom leaned over and kissed Tessa on the forehead. “I’ll see you tonight for dinner, and Nina,” She added turning to her. “If you and your brother, and father if he’s in town, want to join as well please do. Our door is always open for you and your family.”

”I will let them know. I’m working tonight, but I’ll keep the invitation in mind. I’ll pass it on to otec and bratr.” Nina said and gave Tessa’s mom a hug before she left. She then turned to Tessa and let out a snerk. ”Your mom has no idea I was there last night, does she?”

“I don’t think so...” Tessa trailed off grinning and shaking her head. “Let us let her continue to have that misconception.”

Nina nodded. ”I hear ya. So how far do you want me to go with you back home? As I said, I don’t have work for a bit, but… oh wait if your grandma is at your house, I better make sure you get there, huh?” She let out a sigh as she looked over at Tess.

“Yeah knowing mom, she probably called Gran to tell her you’d be with me.” Tessa rolled her eyes. “I would have said all the way anyway.” Her face looked grim again at the thought of walking alone.”

”Good plan.” Nina said and smiled at Tess. ”Hey… despite all that’s happened, I’m really glad we’re friends again.”

“Me too. Let me catch you up on a few things while we walk.”

So! Does anyone have any reservations about a miniature timeskip to progress onto night time soon for more collabing potential? Sorry for sort of writing some of us into a corner at the park. I was hoping to start the next IC day (after this lovely "happy" peaceful time period for the characters) by Friday of next week, hopefully.

I was planning on having Nina stop by the clinic to interact with Tessa, was waiting for @Kirah to have a free day, which is Monday. However, I mean I won't be heartbroken but... yeah.... I mean if we do go to night, I'm sure Kirah and I can still do our collab and I can have Nina fast forward to being at work with @Undine's Ash showing up/ Anyone else at the cafe.
