No offense intended. But there's a sweet spot on the sliding scale of realism, and most of the interest checks I usually see skew too far to the realism end for me.

Can't describe how quickly I go from excited to sad when a mecha premise turns out to be realism wankery.

Oh the Schadenfreude was truly delicious.

The look on Lauren’s face was one Ben had become quite familiar with since she joined BASL. Seeing Lauren express it herself…

Well, Schadenfreude about covered it.

Getting yanked into a hug by Lauren’s Mom wasn’t exactly expected but it was perfectly predictable as soon as it happened. Like mother like daughter. Being pulled away again by Lauren was completely expected, on the other hand, and he didn’t resist whatsoever instead using the force to gracefully retreat a few places while Lauren inquired about her Dad. His face initially fell almost at the same time as hers, once he saw the look on her face, but turned to a huge grin and a soft laugh he just couldn’t hide at the new look on her face.

“I’m sure there’s nothing to worry about, babe.” Ben commented, hiding his amusement behind a bright, cheery smile. “What could he possibly find?”

I don’t even care if he goes through my stuff, this is worth it.
Well now here we go.

Three confirmed hostiles, Cronian in origin, closing quick. Ducked into the dunes, which made a good look damned hard. But unlike Cam, who ducked behind a dune, Sparr didn’t need to move so hastily; she let a few rounds hit her shield while she took up a position behind a smaller dune, stabbing her shield down and supporting it with her frame’s left arm. Short of getting right in front of her or circling around her, the Racers weren’t getting a good firing angle.

The Matryoshka made its own fortified position wherever it went, after all.

“Fine by me, Cam.” She commented with a grin before it turned a little more predatory. “Position established. I’m gonna soften ‘em up.”

Pressman, have some fun.

“Any allied units, be mindful. Fire incoming. Danger close.”

Warning given, she counted to ten; enough time for her to make her best guess at where they were, aided surprisingly enough by a rather large boom, as well as let any allies that got too close make some distance and let loose ten Pressmans with the press of a button. They arced up and then down, blanketing the area of her estimate with explosive fury, A VIV4 HEDP rocketed into the ensuing cloud based on the last position from which the Racers had fired at her. Frames weren’t small targets, and an assault like that might have stunned them. She liked her odds on scoring a hit.

The cannon’s recoil was immense, but the Matryoshka was designed to counter it; properly braced its feet merely sank into the ground.

“They won’t be getting past me. Anyone in need of cover is welcome behind me.”
Tossed up a post since I had some spare time

(Kawal might want to consider which people he can afford to irk)
Speaking of speedsters.

A rumbling growl reverberated in Sparr’s chest as the jumped up little arrogant newest member of the team blew past her almost as quickly as he'd get his ass blown up if there really were hostiles out there by running dick first towards them. And had the fucking nerve to take potshots at how fast her baby moved. Stupid kid was going to get himself fucking killed if he wasn't careful. And it probably wouldn't be one of her rounds that killed him, even though he was trying to take point over people with upwards of four times his experience…

Breathe, and don't picture sending an HEDP up his ass. Viv would frown.

She had a sudden, unwanted tinge of empathy with Katya.

Very unpleasant.

The growl trailed off slowly as she put the pedal to the metal, coaxing Matryoshka towards her top speed. When the kid landed his ass in the fire, as he seemed to realize a second after landing himself on her shit list, she'd have to bail him out.

This was the downside to being the big bitch.

“Cam, twenty bucks says I have to save his ass. Ten says I have to do it while Katya blames me for it.”

Even after a relatively short time, you build up a tolerance for Lauren’s antics. You had to, or you'd go crazy trying to keep up. Dealing with Lauren was something Ben could do. Dealing with Lauren in front of her Mom, who had already sized Amy up before she turned her sights on Ben, put him in uncharted waters. She had to know how her daughter was, but she didn't know him; so as much as Lauren’s rambling amused him, and made him smile hearing the esteem she held him in, her Mom’s first impression of him probably shouldn't be out of her daughter’s mouth.

Thaaaat’s enough.

His best friend's bawdyiest joke was cut off by his shoulder, mostly because it went up when he twisted his arm up and around to ruffle her hair.

Now for a little damage control, before she makes people think I'm… Don't even have a word.

“She is a bit of a gremlin,”
He admitted, still ruffling her hair. It was really, really apparent that those clothes were hers now. They weren't going to fit anyone else. Not something to think about right now, not in this context. ”But she's a good teammate. Better friend.”

“Don't know if she told you, but she joined the team after we lost a member. Showed up right before combat class. She did snap my neck, I try not to hold it against her, but the rest isn't quite that inappropriate.”
He gave Costa a smile, stepping forward (now that her hands were free) with Lauren still on his back to offer her a hand to shake. ”But we wouldn't trade back for the world. She's been really helpful, especially on our mission, and she's fun as hell.”

“Probably not news to you, but you've got a hell of a daughter ma’am. Glad she's my friend.”

Ohhh I'm going to suffer for this.

But, Ben mused to himself as he watched Lauren struggle to lift his new shield, it was kinda worth it. This was funnier than anything else he'd seen over the weekend. She was really trying. Like, he was almost thinking of telling her to chill before she hurt herself trying. He would've, if he wasn't putting so much work into not laughing. Lauren was pissed. Joyous Guard was always going to be a great prank, before he got around to getting it to recognize her, but this was beautiful.

He made a mental note to borrow the battery from Lawnslot later. It’d been in her care long enough to get an Aura signature off of, and it wouldn't take too much to add her to the shield’s whitelist.

Not that he was ever, ever gonna tell her about how that was the technical term. Some battles you don’t fight.

He was just about to tell her to relax when a woman that had to be her mother showed up. The family resemblance was way too strong for her not to be, even though calling her Lauren’s mom seemed impossible. Costa, she said her name was, really didn't seem that old. But she was definitely a Negasi. You could see the prototype Lauren in the way she moved and carried herself. Lauren was thrilled, something Ben honestly hadn’t seen before. She was always pumped up but not like this.

Bastille’s captain couldn't hide a grin and a quick, quiet laugh anymore. He walked back to his shield and scooped it up with one hand to put it back on his back; then he walked towards Lauren and her mom, pausing halfway between them and his team with a little wave.

“Nice to meet you, Mrs. Negasi. I'm Ben.”
Hey, it's been a while so I figured I'd check in on @Deadlyrose9641 and @p1ssaragi. How you guys doing?
The Federation pilot bit her lip, mulling things over. Her French compatriot had a point. Though she wasn't sure the probability of a nearby base was enough to run the risk, they wouldn't know where to go, Side 6 was close. They could reach it without too much danger. Rebekah could get her GM up to top speed without too much propellant and then just coast on inertia. It was a more concrete possibility than whatever was on the colony.

The only real risk lay with her supplies. Would her air last that long? Very few things scared her, but… That did. Death in battle was vastly preferable to running out of air.

Hypothetically her supplies could last. Sixty hours, tops, to reach Side 6. Her mobile suit could sustain her for at least three days, and her normal suit had its own air supply. Her water world last, though maybe not comfortably, as would her rations. It was doable. Especially if they made a brief search for resources on the colony before setting out.

Her musings were interrupted by a… Nagging, in the back of her head. An irritating sensation that she couldn't place. Her eyes found the odd Zaku pilot, narrowing at the intensely concentrating Zeek. She was a Newtype, no doubt. So was Grenier next to her. Maybe she was catching some kind of interference between them? It was irritating, no doubt, and she briefly fixed the golden-eyed girl with an intense stare of her own.

“Wish she'd stop that.” Rebekah muttered under her breath before fixing her attention on Dallas again.

“We could make it to Side 6. Searching for a Federation base seems like a shot in the dark that I’d rather not risk. But Side 6 is sixty hours away at most, and our air should last that long. It won't be comfortable, but we could get there.”

The Lieutenant crossed her arms across her chest and leaned back against the Juggler’s foot.

“We should search the colony for any supplies nearby we can take with us, but Side 6 seems our best choice.”
Finally got a post up.
