well in sticking with the classical theme/era soldiery i'm struggling to think of an idea that isn't just 'group of dudes with spears, supported by smaller group of dudes with light armour and shorter spears.' not exactly lighting up the imagination.

What about unique cavalry like the Companion Cavalry of Alexander, or perhaps falxmen? Slingers are also good as the Balearic slingers demonstrate in battles alongside the Carthaginians and Romans. You can even try going backwards in technology and go for warclubs and the like. If it proves too dry, I still allow going a little upwards in-terms of tech given good reason.
Checking in on some of the people who looked interested and haven't said anything here yet. How's everyone getting on?

I'm liking both of these at the moment. @Theyra @Wildman13
Halo you say?
Thanks!
Awesome thanks for your quick response. Just to highlight that I intend for this to be an Advanced RP if you're happy and confident in your ability then thats great.

I'll do my best. I've always wanted to dip my toes into advanced RP's. However, I would ask for some degree of patience as it would be my first time diving into something "Advanced" other than an NRP.
After watching a bunch of SCP vids and fanmade scenarios of MTFs... I'd like to volunteer as part of an MTF tasked with said mission.
I'm asking g because I don't want to do something that grinds against the intended theme. I was originally thinking of something in the style of wfb empire.pire troops/ RL Swiss mercenaries. But that is more firmly medieval style and not classical. If the theme is classical I'll think of something else.

I'd say then that classical is more in line with what I had imagined. Ranks of heavy infantry arrayed into Macedonian style phalanxes or perhaps Roman-esque legionaries holding a shield wall throwing javelins before beginning their slow push into the enemy ranks cutting down everything in their path. This is what I had envisioned, of course with a more fantastical element in play.
Question. It seems like magic is highly common in this setting. But still, How many mages are too many in a regiment?

And is this more in the age of classical myth, like greco-roman/ turn of the bronze age? or traditional european medieval 'Ala holy Roman empire, 100 years war, etc.'

Mages in this world are common, but rarely are they regular soldiers. During the events of the roleplay they are even fewer. Any mages that come into your regiments are either the last of the elite battle mages you have or are fresh faced recruits that have been drawn up from your citizens to fight or die in the face of the growing darkness.

The age of this isn't exactly uniform, however I did envision the roleplay to be closer to the Greco-Roman like era. It's hard to say what would and wouldn't be possible for a fantasy setting and I don't really want to bother too much as I primarily focus more on everyone's narratives rather than the tech. So I say, you're free to make it either I suppose.

Thanks. The note I'm hoping to strike with this is the dissonance of a giant flaming elephant-man turning your entire body into mist with a warhammer, and then reciting weird poetry a moment later.

Would probably catch a lot of elves off guard and would amuse dwarves...
