@TheSovereignGrave Nice catch! The map is a modified version of the ASOIAF planet's map, with a few things moved around and Westeros taken out altogether. I thought shoving the summer islands on top of Essos would hide my laziness, and you have proved me wrong.
@Jeyma Here's a list of nations you could borrow from if you want, though that's not to say you have to exclusively have naval elements and eat coconuts and shit. Also, to answer your earlier questions, the goal here is a group of 3-4 people who fit the three categories mentioned, and if I can get more than that then that's cool too. In the more likely event that some people get bored or quit, one of the 3-4 regulars will conquer them and life will go on.
@ethanjory Hilarious as that claim is, I'd prefer you have a bigger claim so I don't have to keep track of tiny city-states.
[@The Rest of You] Forgot to mention, the continent that Gowi is on is essentially our planet's Europe. If you want a culture with straight swords, conservative dress, and lutes, put your country there. The further away you are from that continent, the more dissimilar your culture is. Sound fair?
@Gowi Yes. All areas not taken when the IC starts have civilizations not advanced enough to put on the map, so conquering them is automatic as opposed to a dice roll.
@Jeyma@Dynamo Frokane Low Fantasy dos! Humans only, minor magic if it helps the plot in the far-off corners of the world, but otherwise it's not really a thing.
Also, just a heads-up to the interested: I'm looking for a new map to have an NRP on a larger scale, since one giant Pangaea-landmass doesn't exactly beget a myriad of different cultures. The base continent will be mostly European in culture to satisfy those into the Temperate setting idea, and a few far-off smaller continents for those who want to play a different kind of peoples.
EDIT: [@Everyone] so while i look for this map, feel free to start giving me an idea of what you've got in mind so i know how far to space these continents.
Looking for 3-4 people for a low fantasy NRP. Only current rules are that you can deliver on these three points.
• Interactivity Everybody's favorite part of RPing is reading other people's takes on their creation in the form of a reply. The geographical constraints used in NRPs often end up with limited interaction, which leads to thread death. Solution? Everybody has characters in everybody else's regions at once, so everyone will be juggling a few plots.
• Imagination Without pulling punches here, another reason a lot of NRPs die is because one of the players has put less effort into their nation, which frustrates the players who are next to that nation whose interactions are mostly with the literally lesser-developed nation, so they become less excited about posting, which leads to stagnation, which leads to thread death. Don't be that guy.
• Dedication The last reason NRPs tend to dwindle? People get bored! By submitting interest, you're not promising you won't ever get bored with this RP, but you are promising you will try really hard to vocalize your opinions on the RP and not drop off the face of the planet. Sometimes the days between posts accidentally become a week and it feels awkward to ask if anyone else is still there -- I've been guilty of this myself at times -- but this time, let's all just try to at least shoot the shit in the OOC to make sure nobody's silently dropped out.
Other than that, there's very little I have in mind, I don't want to ask for too much off the bat. If anyone's interested, let me know which of these three plots you'd prefer.
Frozen NRP: The scale of the planet on the map we're using is much bigger, so our continent is relatively small and very far north. Characters will have relatively Scandinavian naming conventions, drink mead, wear fur, and probably fight with axes. Think Vikings.
Temperate NRP: The scale of the planet is twice as big as the continent we're using, so the north ends at the north pole and the south ends at the equator. Characters will have relatively Western naming conventions, drink wine, wear tunics, and probably fight with swords. Think Game of Thrones.
Expansive NRP: The scale of the planet is the map we're using, so both poles are visible. Every country has a drastically different culture due to their size and distance. Characters will have all kinds of naming conventions, drink, dress, and fight differently. I don't think there are any shows that go to this scale. Marco Polo, I guess? Rome?
The Good: There is an OOC now with the character sheet, rules, and a handy-dandy trait system.
The Bad: The reason I took that unexpected leave of absence was because I fucked up my hand. It's still pretty ow, so it'll be a week before this gets up and running.
The Ugly: is a 1997 New Zealand horror film, the first feature directed and written by Scott Reynolds. The film starred Paolo Rotondo, Rebecca Hobbs, Jennifer Ward-Lealand, and Roy Ward. The film is about a psychiatrist that is meeting with a serial killer to determine whether or not he has been successfully cured. They delve into a journey through his past and his victims, and through this "The Ugly," a distorted allusion to The Ugly Duckling, is revealed. It was nominated for best film awards at festivals in New Zealand, Portugal and the United States.
Appearance: Unsurprisingly, the farmhand nicknamed Scarecrow is one of the skinniest at the farm. Scarecrow is about a head shorter than his fellow workers, and has a taut frame that suggests he would blow away in an especially strong wind. Like many of the farmhands, he has only one outfit; black pants and a black vest, a white collarless button-down, and an old leathery brown pair of boots. He is one of the few farmhands who buys neither cigarettes nor alcohol, and has been able to buy himself pleasantries -- namely cologne and neckties -- as well as the straw boater hat he has worn for years. In spite of the years he has spent working the fields, his face retains a handsome sharpness to it, which he owes to his Sicilian heritage. He has a pronounced Roman nose, olive skin, and thick, oily black hair kept out of the way by his straw hat.
Personality: Scarecrow is a charismatic man, though his is the kindly likability of an old neighbor moreso than that of a silver tongued salesman. He enjoys doing small favors for other workers out of a mixed sense of camaraderie and Catholic duty, and frequently eases the workload with songs, jokes, and sundry gifts. When there is work to be done in sweltering heat, Scarecrow can be found organizing games of dice in the shade of either barn, and when there is work to be done through feet of snow, Scarecrow procures piping hot coffee seemingly out of thin air. Additionally, Scarecrow is known for his stories -- Many a worker at the Tackett farm come from relatively quiet cities or outright dull rural towns, whereas Scarecrow's tales are set in Italian brothels, travelling circuses, and the parties of mobsters. Scarecrow's performing background also comes to light in the form of his occasional "performances" during work such as balancing acts, magic tricks, juggling, and occasional operatic ballads.
Aside from his surface-level friendliness, Scarecrow is something of a calculative person; He is not friendly solely because he enjoys being kind, he is partly friendly because he knows friendliness begets perks. He is a friend to the men in both barns, and can freely pass between the two as a result. He is a friend to the old farmhand who does the farm's accounting and finds a few extra days added to his pay as a result. He is certainly friends with Mrs. Tackett, and does not have to worry about ever losing his job as a result. In short, there are few men as thin and wiry as Scarecrow who can rightfully walk with the same confidence.
History: Scarecrow was born to Rosa Corvi in Palermo, Sicily. More specifically, Scarecrow was born to Rosa Corvi in a brothel in Palermo, where he remained for several years after his mother and other working girls surmised he was too cute of a baby to give to an orphanage. Scarecrow, who was still called Antoni in those days, spent his life with a relative degree of privilege for a whoreson, surrounded by kindly doting women, sweet incense, and soft pillows. It was not until he was a teenager that he would leave this life, being sent to live with his cousins in America by his mother who feared that her son's idly spent adolescence and lack of male figures would make him soft.
Antoni stayed with his cousins for approximately a month, working on the docks of Sheepshead Bay for long enough to purchase himself a train ticket to Florida. Proving perhaps that he was as soft as his mother feared, Antoni fled his meager career as a longshoreman, leaving for Florida in the middle of the night. As fate would have it, Antoni's then-poor understanding of the English language proved to be the fatal flaw of his escape, as the teenager mistakenly used his earnings to purchase a ticket to Bristol, Iowa rather than Bristol, Florida. Alone and penniless, Antoni wandered the streets in search of work for days, until he found a single opening at a travelling circus that had stopped by the town, which was in need of a ticket vendor.
As Scarecrow often repeated, this was the only time "Being a wop helped", as the circus was owned by Carlo Mancini, a full-blooded Italian. Antoni's charismatic nature helped him rise through the ranks of the circus, first as a vendor, then a gaffer and then as a barker, enticing outsiders to part with their money and see the spectacles within the tents. This continued until Antoni was covering performances for clowns that were sick or too drunk, until he was headlining his own sleight of hand performances as Antoni the Magnificent. With the sudden economic collapse, Antoni went on to seek work in a small Pennsylvanian town the circus stopped in, where he has stayed for years.
