Maybe someone getting angry or frustrated and just feeling defeated begins to feed and draw Umbra as the surroundings begin to darken slowly at first but noticeably more as emotions highten causing Shade to step in to difuse umbra and attempt to help

Good point, I feel maybe a bit of both cause while she isn't a passive person but she also wouldn't enter a situation unless there was a need for her to interfere be it danger for the surroundings or bystanders
