The Endgame

"You forget, my dear," the woman said with an easy smile. Pyre's Fortune cast a haunting violet glow on her slitted face. "Luck itself is on my side."

The earth and splintered wood around her boots dried and crumbled away.

Catarina's skilled and precise lunge ... missed. As if her target had moved suddenly, the mage's best efforts were made to seem the fool's effort. Through spell and stab, lunge and strike, the most improbable outcomes again and again made the snake-faced woman appear untouchable. "You don't have the map. Do you." Her smile hadn't faltered. She turned Pyre's Fortune in her fingers. "I suppose I don't need you then."

The door slammed open with a sound like a gunshot. The Dragon -- in his gold and weathered silks and graying lace -- stood grinning terribly, the map rolled in a glinting fist. "Ifrit!" he greeted the snake-faced woman.

The woman tilted her head slightly, her smile thoughtful. "Ifrae," she corrected him gently -- and she returned her eyes to Catarina with a beautiful smirk. Luck would always love her, as long as she had Pyre's Fortune -- and Luck had brought her the map she desired.

The Dragon held the rolled map close to his chest, his eyes steady on Ifrae and his grin unchanged. "I'm not about to get into range while you're holding it," he called across the tavern at her -- and his eyes shifted knowingly to Catarina. "Once it's back in its box, we'll talk."

"Just one more loose end to tie up, first," Ifrae begged charmingly, and with a glance at Catarina she willed that it would suit her very much if the mage simply ended herself in that moment.

@Girlie1Bomba Good question! That actually refers to the captain. The CS is actually an application that the character is filling out and will submit to the captain for consideration as a new crew member -- so it means, does your character trust this Golby based on what vague knowledge they might have about him?

@Juicy In my understanding, Griff and Evelio are both standing rather close to the mote. Capella is atop a sand dune that rises above the mote, and if she were to fall from it she'd be in danger of getting caught in the whirlwind.

Feel free to invent a bit of scenery as it suits what you want to do (as Capella's sand dune) -- I'll incorporate whatever you guys come up with, within reason!

NEBULA )) (pl. nebulae) A blanket term for the synthetic life forms commonly found in the wild. Believed to have been originally developed from unearthed dragon remains. An invasive species: has diversified, evolved, and all but replaced native flora and fauna.

FOLK )) Refers to ancient and primitive civilizations; their stone ruins are common in undeveloped places. Little survives of what they were truly like, but stories and legends abound.

LABYRINTH CORP )) The label on every high flier, scum skidder and deep mover in production. Most high-quality machinery, vehicles and weapons have the LABYRINTH mark. Known for their innovation in -- and monopoly on -- bio-machinery.

HOLOGRAPHIC ORTHOGONAL BROADCASTING ORGANISM (H.O.B.O.) )) An essential device that everyone carries on their person at all times. A newer, fancier one comes out every year (for those who like to have the latest thing) and there are billions of available styles and specialty functions.

THE HELIUM FRIGHTFUL )) A living sky-vessel, captained by a renowned vigilante, in need of a crew.

Plot Concept

A usurped king-turned-vigilante is in need of a crew for his new sky-vessel. He promises adventure and heroism, but makes no mention of money or comfort. Instead of the usual skill requirements, all he asks is that applicants completely and honestly fill out a form with very personal questions.

Gameplay

Each player will propose and help run a small adventure that is personally meaningful to their character -- essentially everyone takes turns being co-GM. There will be an overarching plot, but it will develop only as the characters do. Once the most recent post reaches '7 days ago' -- or everyone has posted what they wanted to, whichever comes first -- the GM will make a post to keep the stories moving, whether or not the acting co-GM has posted. Players are encouraged to worldbuild a bit for their turn at an adventure.

Characters

Everyone is human -- mostly. After centuries of adaptation following the extinction of most natural trees and wildlife, and the widespread practice of body alterations and messing with genes, there is no longer a norm. Social equality is part of the reason most people wear layers of clothing, hats and helmets and veils -- but mostly this is done as protection against unpredictable weather and unstable air quality.

HOW WOULD I RECOGNIZE YOU IF I'VE NEVER SEEN YOU BEFORE?

How do you really recognize anyone, unless they want to be recognized? It's not like people show their faces that often. Do most people even have faces? How would you know? I can definitively say that I do have a face: I have an earthy complexion (so I've been told), rusty hair (sometimes literally), and two mouths. One is for drinking, the other is for eating. But you can always recognize me by my sunglasses: they're yellow and triangle and read the ambient humidity with precise accuracy. I love my sunglasses.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE RIGHT NOW?

Since the Skuldugger Swarm laid waste to my kingdom (it was a beautiful, green, quiet place I was really most proud of) and I escaped the palace-on-fire through the shit chute (would not recommend it) I've been very public with my efforts to return a sense of security to a chaotic world. I think it's been going well -- I've made a name for myself, at least, I think, and my help is often specifically requested in times of dire need. They've heard, I guess, that I'd had a hand in the liberation of a number of good people from the grip of abuse and corruption. I do what I can, you know -- but at a certain point I realize I simply can't do it alone.

WHY?

Why do I do it at all? Why don't I cower under a bridge somewhere and wait for fate to come to me? Why do I specifically seek out people who need help, like I needed help, and help them when no one had helped me? When I couldn't even defend myself when I needed myself the most? That is precisely why.

WHAT WOULD YOU RATHER BE DOING?

I'd rather be teaching my kid how to drive a high flier, how to whistle like an ik-ik, and how to talk to people from other kingdoms so they might not want to declare war on ours. But I never had a kid and my kingdom is trash now. So.

I'm very good at whistling. I can whistle harmonies that would make the most badass warrior cry.

I am very bad at judging character. Even now, I still assume the best in people until it's far too late. I've had my trade-card stolen four times in the past month because I lent it out to poor souls in need. It's a little embarrassing.

WHAT'S SOMETHING YOU LOVE THAT PEOPLE WOULD PROBABLY JUDGE YOU FOR?

Comic books -- the old paper ones, when I can get them, but most of my collection is stored in my sunglasses. I can't quite argue that they haven't influenced me a little.

WHY DO YOU FEEL LONELY?

I feel like, to most people, I'm not really a person. I'm a hero, a label, a figure of hope, like in the comics. I shouldn't complain, I have many good acquaintances who care for my well-being -- but I don't know who I would turn to if I'm ever in need.

My mother was a big woman, with curly hair and a very deep frown that made her jowls sag prematurely. She spent her time looking for people to accost with her elongated stories and dramatic pauses, complained quite a lot and loved gossip. She was a very good teacher, and saw to it that the kingdom's children were well-educated despite the environmental struggles. My father was very quiet, lost in his own thoughts most of the time, thin and slightly hunched. I barely remember his face, he spent so much of his time with his helmet on, studying mathematical figures of the kingdom's financial states. His political decisions were always precise and fair.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THEM?

My mother was never meant to be a mother, I think. She tried, really, and she wanted to be a good mother, but she was a bit mechanical with the work of it. My father was more of a fixture than a person, really. I don't have much of a strong opinion either way, which I think feels a bit worse than a poor opinion if I'm honest.

WHERE DO YOU FIND LOVE AND COMFORT NOW? HINT: THE ANSWER IS NEVER NOWHERE.

There's something intoxicating about the Folk ruins. For a long while I felt a bit desperate and aimless, starved for human connection, but the ruins somehow feel more like home than my childhood ever did. There's something those old civilizations realized that I think was lost with the native forests and wildlife. It has something to do with the old gods -- not the nebulae who inflate themselves with self-declared importance, but the true spirits that I think are only sleeping. One day I'll find them.

WHY ARE YOU DIFFERENT FROM EVERYBODY ELSE?

I walk toward the things everyone else runs from. This probably makes me insane.

WHAT DO YOU WANT MORE THAN ANYTHING?

I want to live in a time and place where no one needs saving. Failing that, I could go for a pickle burger right now.
