@Kirah: Gideon slid her knuckle blades onto her off hand, grimacing slightly as Andy suggested having Leah to look at her eye. She hadn’t had a medical exam since… well, since the disastrous one at the contest, and she had hated every second of it. It’d been almost a relief when it had been cut short, as they realized she somehow had managed to fail English - again. “Nah, I’m good. If I go blind, I go blind,” she offered with a shrug. But with her knuckle blades on one hand and her rapier secured - and a quick check to make sure her hair looked decent in the mirror - she was ready to go back to the carnival. “Let’s go beat up some other losers, yeah?” she grinned.

@KazAlkemi@PatientBean: No one else had stumbled across the tent to disturb them, leaving Luna and Millie to become acquainted with one another in peace. Of course, Millie’s phone buzzed with a helpful(?) reply from Dorian - and not a single one from Danni. She would likely see a notification though that Danni was livestreaming at the moment, although if she clicked on it, all she would see was a black screen and the muffled sound of adolescent screaming.

As for Luna, she would feel a sudden weight appear in her pant’s pocket - an object about the size of a phone, yet flexible and light… and eerily familiar…

@Blizz: At the base of the hill, students were giggling and talking with one another, using the straps on their tubes to drag them back over to the lift so they could have another go. Some were gawking at the ramp that had suddenly appeared, their faces wide with curiosity and horror as they saw yet another student about to embark on that challenge. Enough of them had seen Danni’s stream and heard the screams, with the feed going black, to have assumed that he had died. It wouldn’t be the first time a student died at AA.

However, she would overhear a group of three - an incredibly tall girl with ice blue skin dressed as if a Hot Topic exploded on her, a shorter boy with glasses that almost had a mirror finish to them, hiding his eyes, and… what seemed to be a sentient, glowing green cube, the whole chicken it had consumed earlier completely visible from its semi-transparent nature.

“There’s no way you wouldn’t have seen it!” the icy giant hissed. “I specifically asked you to look for what would happen, Carlos!”

The shorter boy winced, but clearly was on the giant’s side. “You’re a precog, it doesn’t look good… Why didn’t you see that Shadowlight would turn Carlie down?”

Carlos, the sentient cube, spun in a circle, as if throwing his hands up in protest. He had no clearly defined mouth, and produced no audible speech, but somehow his meaning became known to the others, even to Marlena. My visions have been fucked up today. All I keep seeing are blonde girls with swords!

“Fucking breeders…” Carlie scoffed. “Fine. But I’m still mad at you. And I’m telling Mom.”

Almost immediately, Percy’s thoughts tried to drag him back down into that dark place, attacking on two fronts this time. The first was Dorian’s assertion that he was just growing up - he knew he was a child, he wasn’t going to argue that, but… there were moments where the three (now two) year age gap between them felt massive, like a gaping chasm waiting to swallow him up. The second count, of course, was that he did know how to roller skate. He’d never been incredibly interested in it, but his best friend had been - and his mother, Dominika, had been more than thrilled to encourage more physical activities for him to indulge in. He remembered how it felt to hold Chase’s hand as he skated, terrified that he would fall and injure himself, but feeling so paradoxically safe and secure at the same time, knowing Chase would never let that happen…

He took a breath, before getting down onto his knees and guiding Dorian’s foot into the hole of his skate, helping him to put it on. “Yes, I’ve skated before. I, er… My parents used to take me and my friend to the rink not too far from our house, my mame would read and grade papers, while my mother defended her high scores in the arcade. It’s been a while, so I might be rusty… Will you hold my hand?” He was a little concerned that Dorian might try to keep texting his cousins as they skated, given how much trouble he was having just putting his skates on. He unlaced the other one and waited for a moment, so that way he could help his boyfriend put that one on, too.

April was very responsive to the feelings of others. So much so that when one person was feeling happy, they felt happier - when someone was sad, they found themself down in the dumps. It was a vicious feedback loop that Danni and April often fell into, the two of them just cycling the energy back and forth. So when Danni was screaming in fear and terror… April was screaming before they even knew what was happening, an earsplitting screech that would have aced any audition for a slasher fic, landing them the role of final girl.

They held onto Danni as tightly as they could, Amelie squished in the middle between the two of them. Through the screams, their reactions and instincts and all of that failed them, as their only thought was panic - some of the snow falling tried to latch onto them, to create a cushion, but they were too scattered and disorganized. They didn’t even offer a coherent action item, the only thing they were able to say - “AHHHH!!!!!!!!”

They shut their eyes tight, making brief peace with the idea that they were about to die - at least they’d die with Danni. Maybe they could be summoned by Papa at the same time, be besties and siblings in Ghost Hawaii and visit Dorian on the weekends. Maybe -

“...Why aren’t we dead?” April croaked out, feeling themselves come to a slow, gradual, and safe stop. They opened their eyes slowly. “Did your not-boyf save us?”

The three magpies offered no response to Rohan, remaining silent and content in their newfound nest. Two of them were awake and alert, their heads moving as the conversation flowed between the two tables, attracted to the source of sound. The third, however, had its eyes closed and its head tucked in, falling asleep on top of Rohan's head. His stillness had clearly endeared himself to the magpies, and the sense would overcome him that if he were to move, the spell would shatter, and the birds would fly, crying out as they fled. One of the awake birds pecked at his ear, and tilted its head in curiosity, as if surprised by the taste.

In that way, the magpie was not too dissimilar to the students in the hall confused by the wellington.

Dinner was beginning to come to a close, the first students trickling out having eaten their fill. More hushed conversations could be heard, discussion of the head and its meaning - whether it was a nasty new punishment Croan had devised for his students or simply a misplaced project from the necromancy lab. At any rate, the students in the Coven system were not the only ones interested in it, and should any of them be interested in investigation, now would be the ideal chance to do so - before the entire school swarmed the dungeons, inadvertently trampling over any evidence with shoddy spells and ambitions.

Jake was positively beaming, the head pats from Nicky making him feel so warm and happy. He even explained the joke to him! He didn’t understand how Jack was anything like Jake and what made it a joke, but he made sure to note it. Maybe he could call Barty a fun new name some time to surprise him! He didn’t know many names though, he’d have to ask someone what sort of name they thought Barty should be called for a joke. But as Nicky held his hand under the table - it made him feel so tingly and hyper! - he was instructed to calm down and work on his breathing exercises. So he took deep breaths in and out, repeating the mantra over and over again - [i]I am one with the force and the force is in me[\i]

And it worked this time! The rush of energy swirling in him seemed to subside, enough for him to catch Cassie’s interaction with Barty. He was really confused why she would spit out something bad back into her drink, but from what Barty was saying, Cassie was being a little confusing so he didn’t worry about it. What did worry him, though, was that Cassie clearly didn’t like Barty. His lip pouted and his shoulders slumped a bit. He just wanted all his friends to be happy and get along! If Cassie didn’t like Barty and he made her upset…

“Why doesn’t she like Barty?” he asked Nicky.

And then, he paused, frowning again. “And what’s a Disney princess?” He hadn’t spotted the birds yet at the other table.

@Kirah: “Oh, I think they’re kinda fucked,” Gideon shrugged her shoulders, and tapped on the side of her sunglasses. “Y’know when you see that little floating spot that you know isn’t real and it usually goes away? I see, like twenty of those floaters right now. Buuuut it’s probably going to be fine… I dunno. Nurse Annie gives me the creeps so I’m just going to hope it fixes itself out. Eyes can do that, right? Just gotta eat more carrots or something.” She was trying not to worry about it. Her eyes hadn’t always been like this - so sensitive to light. And while she’d hurt her eyes before, it usually had been her choice to peek out from underneath the shades, she’d never had them knocked off of her in a fight before like that.

Once they got to the room, Gideon immediately went through her things, pulling out a thin rapier with an ornate handle. She swapped out her sword frog for one of the appropriate size and then placed it on her hip, and strapped her rapier in. “Should I bring the knuckle blades, too? Or is that too much? I have an off-hand now…”

@PatientBean@KazAlkemi: Within the purple and red tent of the Scarlet Witch, its usual eccentricities were gone - no shelves, no arcane artifacts, no candles burning, dripping with wax. It was empty, void of almost anything interesting, save the strange crystalline substance covering the ground, as reflective as a mirror and as cold as ice. On the other side, a teenage girl with short, cropped blonde hair rested as if in sleep, her clothing dated. Fissures extended throughout the surface, blinding light pouring out from the cracks - and as Millicent entered, they grew more and more, loud and frightening until a web of them had formed.

And you, Luna Braddock, open your eyes not in your home, your beloved Otherworld, but somewhere new - somewhere familiar. Your surroundings offer little clues as to your time and place, little help to orient you as to what has happened. Your memories are blurry and unclear, brief flashes coming back to you - of a faceless army marching to the Starlight Citadel - of your lady, Saturnyne stripping you of your title, your powers in disappointment for your failure. Your body feels unfamiliar, yours but not quite. And the best clue as to where you are, of course, is the humanoid girl gawking at you, playing with what looks to be a smartphone. It could be your home reality, yes… but there are hundreds of realities with phones, and even more with humanoid inhabitants - hopefully she shares a language in common with you.

Hopefully she isn’t hostile, either.

Percy took a deep breath, inhaling Dorian’s scent before slowly lifting his head off his boyfriend’s chest. He trusted him, trusted Dorian to protect him and keep him safe. He hadn’t noticed his phone vibrate again in his pocket, but with how he was pressed up against Dorian, Dorian would feel the vibration against his leg. He sniffled, blinking his eyes rapidly to try to get rid of the sticky, tear-filled feeling. “I’m sorry I’ve been… so broken lately,” he said quietly. He hated it - hated how ever since the Contest of Champions, he’d been needing to lean on Dorian more and more, as everything in his life had spiraled out of control, skeletons reanimating and waltzing out of his closet to cause havoc. “It’s not fair to you.”

He was tempted for a moment to ask if they could stop by Percy’s room so he could change into the hoodie Dorian had given him - it always helped him to feel safe and secure - but he had already delayed his boyfriend from experiencing so much of the carnival. So instead, he focused on the opposite end of the ice rank, where skates were available to bother, and the two of them disappeared with a shimmer of blue light, reappearing there and still embraced.

He shifted so that way his arm was around Dorian’s waist and Dorian’s arm around his shoulder, and he quickly chatted with the staff member working the booth, getting skates in both of their sizes - with Percy’s being several sizes smaller. “Is there a trick to this?” he asked, as they went over to a bench and Percy sat down, lacing up his skates. He grimaced slightly. He had actual blades strapped to his feet. But if Leah could do this, then anyone could. “Or are we doing the boyfriend thing where you spin me around helplessly and laugh?”

April’s face was burning as they were called out on their behavior. It wasn’t something they had super talked with their siblings about - mostly with Pops, really. While they were feeling loads better than last semester, as the thoughts of ending it all had largely gone away, they weren’t doing completely fine. They were bipolar - and instead of being depressed, well… they’d been pretty manic, lately. It was a big part of why they’d been grounded over winter break, to keep them close to home in case they got a wild idea in their head.

At any rate, their impulse control was at an all time low - and it showed. “Um, can you keep this a secret?” they asked, forgetting that Danni had already started streaming. “It’s, like, not a big deal because it’s pretty minor and I’m not like - like thinking that I’m starting a new movement or that I’m secretly the chosen one or anything like that, like I’m still sleeping and everything okay but like… lately when I get an idea in my head, I kinda, just, like… just go and do it?” they bit their lip. “So like… I don’t wanna date Marlena, because I don’t think we’re compatible but… every time I see her, my first thought is wow I wanna kiss the shit out of her and then that’s what my brain acts on and then I’m like fuck, why did I do that and it might be mania on a small level so… I don’t want people to think that I’m crazy or anything - or crazier than they already think I am, ‘cause those reporters dug up how I tried to off myself and got locked up and all but… yeah. Please don’t tell anyone.”

Fortunately, though, their streaming issues seemed to be solved - as a shadowy hand spawned out of nowhere, grabbing onto the phone. Danni screamed, though, which meant that April also screamed - as did Amelie. But finally, they were all set up and ready to go!! The stream had started (just then, to April’s knowledge) and Danni had set up everything for their viewers. At their introduction, April grinned and waved at the camera. “Hi guys!!” They knew it was important to interact with the chat - and that it was incredibly awkward when people didn’t.

And then they were off!! It was exhilarating, as April screeched, their eyes spared from the wind by their glasses - and as they threw their hands out, a gigantic ramp of ice suddenly extended out for them, and they shot up it in a flash. For a moment, there was a feeling of weightlessness as they soared through the air, reaching the apex of their trajectory. They’d cleared most of the carnival, flying over the rink, the hot chocolate stand, the tarot reading tent, and more. “Woohoo!!!!”

How were they going to land, though? April had no idea at all. That was a Danni problem.

Nancy rolled her eyes as her brother came in without a shirt on. It wasn't anything she hadn't seen before. "Hopefully you didn't misplace your sunscreen, too - or you'll have a gnarly burn." Of course, everyone thirsting over her twin brother made her want to gag. He was her brother, he wasn't some heartthrob on a magazine cover. And she definitely didn't want to be part of conversations that eluded to him having sex with Demi - she was happy for him, yes, but he was her brother. There were things she just didn't want to think about. It'd never really been a problem before because he'd never really dated anyone. Best not to think about it, though.

"Thanks, Marco," Nancy said, as she took some of the food, biting into the mac and cheese. At Demi's suggestion for a group activity though, she winced. As much as her mother had taken her to tons of camps and extracurriculars growing up, Nancy was a horrible swimmer. She had an intense fear of drowning, of going into a seizure while in the water and just never waking back up - and it had prevented her from learning, prevented her from really trying. While the other kids were swimming, she usually sat back with the counselors on duty, reading a book and waiting for the swim session to be over.

She sighed slightly. She didn't fit in here at all. "I think I will pass," she told Demi, her smile thin. "But you all have fun."
@KazAlkemi approved!! she comes in next update :)

Dysphoria was not satisfied with such a short display of affection and tilted Finley back, the possessiveness from earlier and the warm satisfaction of their time together still humming in their veins as tendril curled up. They licked into their fae’s mouth, savoring the taste of chocolate on their tongue, and nipped at their lips as they indulged their need for affection. Dysphoria glanced across the room to ensure they were in full view of the woodling so they could remind whatever lives inside his veins of its place. Dysphoria hummed pleasantly as they broke off the kiss, snuggling into the crook of their neck as they let out a concerned huff as Nicky’s statement.

“I have noticed that humans do not hunt. Are they concerned that when they are hunted, they will be weak and soft and useless? Do humans need help learning to run and hide and fight? Does our moth and the Cassie need practice? Maybe Nicholas can help; we hunt him and he sometimes escapes.” Dysphoria asked the table, concerned.

Though, the symbiote turned the idea of a mani-pedi over in their head. “I would like to join this mani-pedi activity. I do not understand what this activity is still, but our Dewdrop likes to have colors on their and we like our tendrils to massage them, so perhaps we can learn this thing and surprise our Dewdrop!” Dysphoria asked Cassie excitedly.

Serena’s eyes widened a bit, flustered at the implication of Barty helping her remember. She wasn’t in his crowd, but rumors swirled around the school and she would be glad to steer clear of any involvement with him. “Erm, yes, absolutely,” she agreed, nodding to Connie. “Betty, I think I see Rachel across the hall - should we…?”

Betty shrugged, taking another bite of her Wellington. “Whatever this is, it’s better than the garbage they served last term.”

”Betty.”

Serena kicked her under the table and Betty sighed, standing up with her plate. “Fine, fine, let’s go, come on, loser.”

Then, the hall doors slammed open, a gust of wind carrying in a torrent of brown, crackling leaves. Three chattering magpies dove in and circled the room. Their cries bounced and echoed into every corner before they swooped and settled -

On Rohan.

The three birds, one on each shoulder and one on his head, glanced around the room and then settled, their feathers fluffed up as they nestled.

@Achronum@Blizz@Forsythe@Kirah@PatientBean@Trainerblue192
Morning - Sat. January 15th, 2039 - Los Angeles, California

@Kirah@Trainerblue192: Gideon had no idea why Andy was bringing up Mount Wundagore right now, when they were busy talking about Mount Wonka for Wanda’s stupid detention errand. Maybe she wanted to go hiking? She’d talk about it with her later, she could plan a date in nature if she wanted - maybe they could sword fight at the top of a mountain and then enjoy some time together away from prying eyes. Gideon could eat.

“Yeah, the sisters loved those movies,” she said with a shrug.

Chase had said something really long, and to be honest, she had completely tuned out after the first sentence. That name was far too long. “Imma just call him Artie, okay? No one has the time to be saying all of that. I think I got gray hairs just listening to you rattle that all off.” And then, they left as quickly as they’d shown up anyway, and Gideon was itching for a sword in her hand and an opponent to beat the shit out of. She had no idea what it meant to not have a shadow but she didn’t care. Without her sword, her skin felt like it was crawling.

Back at Chase’s room, nothing had really changed since the last time Ben and he had retreated here. Chase’s roommate had yet to return to the room, so they had it to themselves for a bit of privacy for the moment.

@PatientBean: The Jessies waved at Millie in unison as she left, her eyes darting from side to side in search of an escape. They didn’t seem to pursue her, instead going back to talking amongst themselves, as if they were any ordinary friend group of teenage girls. And as she backed away, one tent in particular would stand out to her. It was small, large enough for maybe three people at a time. The fabric was red, with purple and gold trim, and there was a small sign pinned to it that read “Sorry, Magical Disturbance - Tarot Readings Postponed until Further Notice.”

Of course, what caught her attention was not the sign, but instead the glowing light coming from underneath the entrance flap, and the sudden wind that seemed to have picked up only in its immediate vicinity.

Percy’s phone buzzed four times in succession - he pulled it from his pocket, hopeful to see a text from Dorian, but his spirits sank. There were three from Leah, shockingly legible for her, and then one… one from Chase. He stared at that message for what felt like a small eternity, completely lost as to what to say or do… So he panicked, intending to swipe away from Chase’s message to answer Leah’s, only to accidentally hit the emoji keyboard and hit send on his most frequently used emoji in a message to Chase -

He didn’t notice the message that had sent, already drafting a reply to Leah - and he had it halfway sent, about to inform her that he was physically uninjured, only to hear his name called out. His head snapped up - it was his actual name, too, Novikov instead of Novikova. His boyfriend had flailed his way over the edge of the rink, landing in the snow and then scrambling up from the ground, rushing over towards him. He froze where he was standing, guilt and shame suddenly drowning him. Dorian was worried? Of course he was worried. He was his boyfriend. They loved each other. And he wanted an explanation, he wanted to know why… why Percy had been the one to abandon him, to run away and not say a word. He’d been so fixated on the lack of message from Dorian, from his boyfriend not rushing off after him, on what he was going to do about Chase that he hadn’t considered how his actions would make Dorian feel.

So as Dorian hugged him, he crumbled into him, somehow managing to produce fresh tears. He held onto him like he was afraid he’d disappear if he let go. “Je suis desolé,” he mumbled into him, sniffling. He hated how much he’d been crying lately. He hated feeling like he was liable to shatter and break at the slightest inconvenience. “I-I saw him… saw him in a fight and… I freaked out. I couldn’t control my powers, I appeared on a bench over there,” he gestured in the general direction with a nod of his head, before burying his face back in Dorian’s chest, “and I just… Я сидела там и плакала.”

He was suddenly very scared that Dorian would still be upset with him - that this was going to be too much, that he had asked too much of him, and his body shook. He wished that he could just offer to wear the power dampener bracelet without Dorian needing to wear his, that he could shut off the teleportation so he wasn’t so much of a flight risk. And he wished that he had the courage to go to Sabine and ask her to erase all memories of Chase from his mind, so he could be the happy boyfriend Dorian deserved right now, and not… not this mess.

“D-did you still want to go ice skating?”

April frowned as they considered the problem they had with live streaming everything. Danni needed his hands to hold onto them and Amelie, Amelie didn’t have opposable thumbs, and April would need their hands both to hold onto Danni and to create the ice ramp, as they weren’t very good yet at using their powers without a physical component. If they had some extra appendages like Appa, then this problem would be easy! “D’you think this is part of why Pa got with Appa - since he can always hold up the phone to film and has extra hands?” April then shook their head. “We need a way to, like, strap it to our heads or something… But I will get brain freeze if I glue it to my head with ice and you def would suffer and your flames can’t hold it and Amelie is too baby to hold it but…”

They stopped considering logistics, though, as Danni put his phone in their face, showing some messages in a group chat called the Round Table. Their jaw dropped as they read the texts quickly - as they saw that Andy had already punched someone and school had barely even started yet. But not just someone, someone Danni was friends with - who was now (understandably) upset and bailing on hanging out… “Shit, already? Maybe we should take Andy to one of those rooms where you can go wild and break stuff, let out some of that anger.”

However, it was what Danni said next that made them uncomfortable - as he talked about what he would do if his face had been punched in, how he’d lose his mind and end up on a Kingston-Grey grippy sock vaca round two: electric boogaloo. They forced themself to laugh, but it didn’t meet their eyes, and a thin layer of ice condensed on their fingers like gloves. So when Marlena came up behind them with a pick up line, April practically yelped, jumping in surprise.

“Uh, y-yeah! What… what Danni said!” April felt absolutely tongue tied. They didn’t want to date Marlena, but that didn’t stop their heart from beating quickly every time she was around, and their brain from short circuiting. She was so incredibly hot - easily the hottest person April had ever seen. “You might want to be careful around the snow since… since you’re so hot!”

Their face was bright red, as they practically threw themself into the inner tube Danni had gotten for them. Maybe crashing at 200 mph wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
Em & Nancy

Em dusted off her hands and waved at Zeke and Nancy. “Hey how did it go with the archery range? That’s what you were working on right?” Em asked as she got closer. “I’ve got some good wood to use for a fire tonight, and a whole bunch of brush.” By the time she was finished clearing all the trials Em was pretty certain she’d have enough wood and brush for fire for the whole rest of the summer.

Nancy had calmed down a bit on the walk back from the range, but the irritation with its horrible condition was still simmering in her stomach. There was a split second where her muscles started to tingle, and she paused, becoming acutely aware of her body. The sensation passed quickly though, and she put it out of her mind. “Ugh, the range is grody as anything. The ground’s a nightmare, uneven and covered with actual holes - bows are technically viable but you’d be better off stringing them up with floss - and for targets, we have glorified trash bags. The kids are gonna love it.”

“I don’t know a lot about archery, but that sounds miserable. Anything I can help with? I've got a hoe.” She pointed to a tool half in the wheelbarrow. “And a bunch of weeds.”

“Yeah, I’ve got a ho, too,” Nancy shook her head slightly, her thoughts with her brother. “My plan was to make the kids clean it all up. But I think Zeke has decided to throw his back out with it. Maybe we make it a competition, get the boys trying to one-up each other while we do absolutely anything else.”

Emily laughed at the comment about having a ho. “I would like to see Aster do some yard work, it'll make his hands callous up for the first time. Alright, are you ready for some water and something to eat?”

“What’s his damage, by the way? Besides being a fancy lad,” Nancy asked. She hadn’t eaten much at breakfast earlier, and her brother had split off - probably to go see his boyfriend, she still owed him a tarot reading - so she supposed she couldn’t protest grabbing some food. Water at the very least was needed. Dehydration wasn’t cute. “Sure, we can grab something.”

“Oh, usual rich boy things, he is obsessed more with himself than anything. I don’t think he’s ever looked at another person and not compared how little they are to him. But at least he is a good friend to Marco. I’d think I’d have punched him by now if he weren’t.” Em had punched a lot of people for not being nice to Marco. She had gotten very good at it. Unfortunately she couldn’t punch the entirety of the judiciary.

“Oh, goodie, he’s going to do great with the kids,” Nancy laughed. “At least he’ll be taller than all of them.”

Em winced, and then laughed. “That’s true. It might be a good lesson for him. Not sure what the lesson is, but it’ll be fun to watch.” Em led the way up to the big house. “Probably something about patience.”

“It’ll be better than the lesson so far - that the government can’t fund anything properly. Not only is this place a murder site, but it’s also a death trap staffed by Dobbs - no offense to him, but he’s hardly inspirational - and a bunch of fuck-ups. Great start to a great summer.”

“And Marco.” Em’s voice was light, but the look on her face seemed to imply that if anyone called him a fuck-up she’d fuck them up. There was a pipe on the side of the building near the tree, a brand new looking hose, hooked up to it. Em turned it on, letting the water run till it was cool and clean. She took an experimental sip from it. “Might be lake water, but it tastes clean.” She sipped again, and then splashed some water onto her face. “Want from here, or do you want to go inside and get some from the fridge?” Em didn’t see a difference between the two. They both came from the same source. Unless the water in the fridge had been bottled elsewhere and brought here.

Nancy shook her head. She’d grown up poor. She was fine with drinking water from a hose. It wouldn’t have been the first time. “Nah, this is fine. No point in wasting a glass you’ll just have to clean or toss out,” she shrugged, taking the hose once Emily was done with it and taking a swig. It tasted fine enough - not that she would have been able to taste bacteria or parasites or anything, and maybe it would’ve been smarter to boil it, but her stomach was pretty strong, so she wasn’t too worried.

Once Nancy was done drinking from the hose Emily turned it off. She looked at the tree and frowned a little. “Hmm, you know, oaks aren’t common here. This one is pretty old too.” She leaned over the edge of the deck and looked at where the tree and the earth met. “Weird.” She scrunched her face up. “The tree was planted before the building was built. Why would anyone build this close to a tree like this? Oak’s roots won’t pull down a house like other trees will, but this deck was built with the purpose of protecting it.”

“An oak?” Nancy repeated, looking at the tree a little more closely, her eyes narrowing. Oaks weren’t themselves an issue - they had connections to both life and death, a deep relation to the interplay between those forces. The more troubling part, of course, was that they were also associated with sacrifice. Knowing what had happened here, it sent a chill down Nancy’s spine. “I wouldn’t mess with that tree,” she advised, her tone somewhat ominous. For someone to build a house so close to what was effectively a tie to the Underworld… “Unless you do want to see if you’d make it to the end of a slasher flick.”

Em took a step away from the tree. “Ha, I’m good. I don’t particularly want to test that.” She looked away from the tree and at Nancy. “An oak?”

Nancy nodded. “You’d be surprised,” she answered somewhat cryptically. She studied the tree for another moment. Maybe doing a tarot reading wasn’t such a bad idea - but for something a little broader than her brother’s love life.

Em turned back to the tree looking it up and down. “It looks like something tried to fight the tree.” She gestured to a few marks on the tree. “They are very old. The bark was torn up, but it healed over.”

Nancy grimaced. She didn’t like that one bit. “I don’t blame it, but that’s not going to help the situation. You want to protect yourself against that sort of energy, you gotta burn something. Slashing at it won’t do anything.”

“Burning the tree would burn the house. I can’t tell if the marks are older or younger than the house though.” Em glanced between the main building and the tree a few times trying to determine which might be older. “I like oak trees. They are very drought resistant.”

Nancy’s eyes widened, as she shook her head. “No, not the tree - are you crazy? That thing’s connected to the Underworld, burning the tree is a fantastic way to get cursed. No, there are plants we can burn to cleanse the energy of the space.”

Em blinked, looking at Nancy confused. “What do you mean the tree is connected to the underworld?” She had heard about burning sage and stuff for ghosts, but didn’t quite understand what that had to do with the oak tree, or what the tree had to do with the Underworld.

Nancy studied Em for a moment. Most people were dismissive when it came to Wicca - she probably shouldn’t have said anything, she didn’t have a good sense on whether Em would take her seriously or not if she explained properly. “Oaks used to be called the tree of life - their roots penetrate all the way down to the Underworld. They were sacred to Jupiter.”

Em leaned against the railing of the deck listening to Nancy. “Jupiter, as in Zeus? You know Roman mythology?”

Nancy nodded. “I’m a Hellenistic Wiccan.”

“I know what Wiccan means, not Hellenistic,” Em admitted. “I don’t know a lot about Wiccan, just that people who practice it do... magic. I don’t know if that is the right term.”

Nancy folded her arms across her chest uncomfortably. “It means I, well - when I want to work with deities, I go Roman. I don’t really cast spells or anything, but I read tarot - and I know a bad omen when I see one, and a few ways to try to protect myself when they happen.”

Em made a small humming sound, thinking about what Nancy was saying. “Are you saying this oak tree is a bad omen?”

She nodded. “They’re not just the tree of life… There’s some legends about them being connected to human sacrifice. So like I said - I wouldn’t mess with it.”

Em raised an eyebrow at the human sacrifice comment. Damn. She looked over the tree again, frowning. It didn’t make much sense to her. The damage to the tree wasn’t something she could figure out, it was also old damage. She shivered. “Right, I don’t know if I want to be standing next to the tree anymore. I’m a little wigged out now. Come on, let's get something to eat.”

At Nicky's request for him to calm down, Jake remembered what Cassie had said about the mantras from earlier - they were meant to help him calm down! He was so excited he got to try one in a real situation now! He could hardly contain himself! "Oooh, oooh, I learned about how to calm down today in class, Cassie showed me! You're supposed to say some special words, like - I am one with the force and the force is in me - I don't know what the force is but it's inside me apparently, isn't that so cool? Here, we can do it together and calm down! I am one with the force and the force is in me! I am one with the force and the force is in me! Don't you feel so calm? I don't! Not at all! I feel like I could run so fast. Like really fast. How fast can you run? I bet you can run really fast, you look like you're really fit."

"Class was really cool! I saw a statue that is actually a person, but it's okay because we are going to help him! Croan really wants to help him, too! I could feel Barty and Croan's magic get eaten by the statue as they tried to do things to it, and Connie gave me a present! I licked it, because I didn't know yet that you aren't supposed to put your mouth on things that aren't food. Frankie taught me that. Do you know Frankie? I really like him! He's really fun and he has friendly eyes and we played a game together! Wait, sorry, more class to cover - our professor didn't show up because he has a husband, so it was just me and Cassie, and she was really great and read the letter from him to me because I don't know how to read. We practiced the mantras to calm down and then we went outside to try out some magic, and I made sparkles!! Do you wanna see? I can show you!! And then after that is when I played with Frankie, we got pretty dirty though so he made me change out of my clothes and I didn't have anything else to wear so he loaned me his clothes, isn't that nice? And now I'm here with you and I'm so happy!!"

He slid off of the table and got into the chair as requested, but still made no move to get anything to eat or drink. But Cassie was here now!! He loved Cassie!! She was one of his bestest friends!! He wished he could give her a hug, but he knew that he wasn't supposed to. "Aww, thank you!! Frankie did it!! He said it's something called rouge!! That sounds so fun, I don't know what a mani-pedi is, does it hurt? Do you use blood to make it too? Frankie used blood for this!" he added, pointing at the blush on his cheeks.

Jake shrugged as Cassie asked what they thought. "This school has a lot of stuff written down, it's kinda funny - it's almost like you need to know how to read to be here," he laughed. And then, a new old person showed up! He had seen him last night, but he hadn't met him yet, and Jake waved his hand eagerly at Cal, a motion he had seen others do around the school. And he wasn't the only one to show up - a person who seemed to be two people was also here, that was so cool! And another girl who didn't really look like everyone else!!

"Hi, I'm Jake!!" he introduced himself, beaming at the newcomers. Barty was the last to show up, but he was talking to someone named Jack, and his name was Jake, so that didn't mean him. He was looking over at him though, so Jake turned around to look behind him, excited to meet his new friend Jack but... there was no one there! Weird! "Is Jack invisible? Hi Jack!! It's nice to meet you!!" he said to the air.
