Seen a message on Facebookabout the sign ups being down for a few hours. I logged out and checked it myself but the message it gave me said it had been down for about 14 hours.

Just checking in case this was a glitch somehow or if there's some work being done to the site.

I read this somewhere but it went along the lines of this...

"When given the option, players will always pick the one you never planned for."

To link that into the scope of the RP, you can pretty much guarantee that whatever you have planned will always end up bigger than what you anticipated. So if you planned for a large scale Roleplay, you had better be ready for one that's going to play out even bigger. It's important to know this because there are so many GMs out there that will say, "just one more player", boosting their RP size outside the small group category.

My most successful Roleplay that I GMed was one with a total of 4 players. Yeah it kinda fell apart after I went on holidays for a month, but we got around 50-60 posts in from memory (I have 15 documents on my PC). Quality over quantity and with about 6 applications for that RP I went with quality, and it paid off.

But how often are there games that are designed to end on a manageable time frame? Has anyone seen a roleplay that asks people to roleplay a single event?

What if there was a game created that asked it's players to roleplay a riot, or a group date, or a week long siege, or any event that has a definite end to it?

I'm not completely sure what you mean by event? Are you talking about something like a game level? (eg: Roleplay a bank heist... End Roleplay) If so then yes(?). Kinda hard to tell as I've been in so many roleplays that have died so I can't give a proper answer on that.

As for Roleplays with group character stuff... Ew... Collabs.........

Collabs are great and all, but in one RP that I am playing we ended up with 3 collab groups with 4 characters in two and 2 characters in one. (I have two characters in that roleplay) What we found was that if you create a large event with a collection of players, and something happens in IRL... It basically places the RP on a hold. In this case the scope of the RP got away from us and we made too much happen at once without realising. So in reality the risk of playing out a riot, or a group date, or a week long siege actually has nothing to do with the Roleplay itself, but how it is managed on the outside.

Personally, I enjoy the creativity seen in larger RPs with some amazing characters coming out of the woodwork, however that is not to say that some trash also escapes as well. If you want your roleplay to deliver big, set the target to small and let the story blossom on it's own.
Interest check are just that, a check of interest. If you are finding that not many or no one has approached you about your roleplay then maybe you may need to look at a few reasons why.

For example:
- Publicity
- The Roleplay Structure
- The Roleplay Idea

Your publicity is going to vary depending on time of year, amount of active members, and amount of active roleplays. Even the choice of level can change that interest with people thinking it could be too advanced or too casual for their needs.

Your roleplay also needs a decent structure. A person that enters the thread should know within 30 seconds what the roleplay is about and the basic idea. So often I see walls of text that discuss so many different aspects but never fully grasp the concept of a quick summary. If you're not sure what I mean then go pick up a novel or DVD case and read the back blurb.

Adding to that, make sure you have things formatted well so that people can quickly find any detail. You, yourself, may know that the 5th paragraph down has that key piece of info, but if the average player can't remember it's location, then they'll forget it completely. Thus you have a problem of people forgetting parts of your roleplay and possibly not joining because of that reason.

Finally the idea. What is the idea you are conveying? Is it simple and easy to understand? Or is it complicated? Have you explained the details enough or are you letting players create their own designs? You need to get the concept and ideas out of your head and onto the page but not enough so it saturates everything.

Occasionally I will stumble across a title of a cool sounding roleplay, I will start reading, and then realise that the GM does not have a clear view on what they want. Every element needs to have a reason for it to exist. If you like Slice of Life and you also like unique, magical weapons, then you must realise that merging these two will create a special blend that may not follow down a path that you have planned... and your players will notice this.

Pretty much to sum it all up, if you have a roleplay that isn't working and gathering little to no attention... review it. If I can see a 1x1 roleplay where two people wanted to play as pot plants sitting next to each other on a table (yes... I have seen this before), then any sort of design concept will work so long as it is presented and followed through in the best of ways.
@NuttsnBolts

Just loved your CS's formatting. I tend to use most of that as well, but the way you organized it was quite a work of art. I hope you won't mind if I draw some inspiration from it for my next few ones, to see if the style will "stick" to me or not.

I don't mind. :)

IP banning can be dangerous. I remember on my old site we were looking through IPs and noticed a few members had the same address. Turns out that they had a shared community with a suburb like wifi zone.

So you can set up something that could where you took the address and banned them, but you don'tknow how many others may be affected.

A better option might be an email blacklist seeing as your bots tend to use custom sites and/or temporary emails. However again, blacklisting is dangerous.
Hiders can either be awesome, or a nuisance. A few times I've seen someone use so many Hiders that I wondered, "hell, why not place the entire CS in a hider so I don't have to spend 10 minutes finding out which one of your 20 hiders the info is contained within."

Generally I will avoid them as they often mean people skip out on some details due to thinking the contents is less important.

If I do use them, I mostly use the (hider=) so they appear simple.

In my experience this can vary so much depending on the character structure and the design of the roleplay. Some are simply immune to such horrors and sadly those ones have to be played out like the hero of an action movie; killing people like pawns on a battlefield. For me, this is less fun as I like to play around with the emotional impact that it can cause and the trauma inside the character's head. (Just take a look at my Madison character when I had her wake up after an amputated arm and an eye removal)

As someone who has suffered from some serious anxiety and depressive stages in my life (Don't ask for shits and giggles unless you really wanna know... but they got pretty bad) I find can utilise these as an understanding for what a character may feel. It's not going to be along the same vein, but death is disturbing and it affects the people involved in very similar ways. Adding things like relapses, failure to perform simple tasks, loss in concentration on a task at hand and altering the character's emotions all contribute to that helpless feeling that they may be feeling.

It also depends if its accidental or on purpose...
  • Accidental:
Can appear as someone that will instantly tend to the person in the hopes of righting what is wrong and what they essentially fucked up. The character will often feel as if they should be the one to die instead and will possibly wish that they were the one that died instead.
  • On Purpose:
This will depend on whether it's the first death or not. Hotline Miami actually showed this off in the best way during the first few scenes. The main character, Jacket, just killed a whole bunch of people with no remorse but then kills an innocent homeless guy. Upon walking away he stops and spews on the ground, showing that he feels a deep sickness for what he has done.
As the character moves on they could become more and more violent or start to suffer from symptoms like PTSD, flashbacks and/or nightmares.

Again, this is all based on a bit of a black and white view, but you can have someone that is a killer on purpose and suddenly relapses into regret. Pretty much if you can fuck around with the character's mental side and break them down into nothingness, then you might be doing something right.

Cool! So I might as well show off a bit of the template that I used recently and how each part is used to help create something interesting. I'm always switching up and trying out new things, but this one seems to work well for me as a generic base.

So going through a few details:
  • First off, the top of my CS is always a header style with the image being presented first for the character or theme. Most of the time this will contain the visuals for what I want my character to look like and gives the reader the instant impression of what they should be imagining. I have on one occasion used a art style image that portrayed a lower body shot instead but this worked well seeing as the face of my character was unknown at the time.

  • The details like Name, age and gender can be placed in their own section and stylised so that it gives all your short info in a neat, condensed manner without taking up several lines of text. For the names I tend to go to megacooltext.com and swap over the generic web text for something a little different, while the symbols that I use can be acquired from sites like alt-codes.net or copypastecharacter.com.

  • Colours can be used to help change the feel and make it easier for readers. I never use dark colours and hate it when people use black. I don't want to highlight your text just to be able to read it! Instead, I will choose lighter colours or go with a pastel range. colorhexa.com is a great site for getting the hex codes or names, while offering a range of shades. For The example CS I used #c23b22, however down in the bullet points I went to the shade and tint section of colorhexa.com/c23b22 and chose a shade that was 2 levels lighter. Doing so allows me to add colour contrast so people can see where different element lie.

Note: I use #CCCCCC for my text as pure white can often come out a bit bright. A softer colour makes the text easier to read and less harsh on the eyes. Adding a colour shade to this to have, say, a lighter shade of red is also possible and can help with style.
    White text
    Light grey text
    Compare

  • Underlines are amazing, especially with colour. By adding spaces before the text you can pad out the underline to make it feel more dominant.
    Example:
    Test
    Test

Playing around with the position of the colour tag can create some unusual effects too
    Test

    [color=Aquamarine][u][b]Test[/b][/u][/color]
    [color=Aquamarine][u][b] Test [/b][/u][/color]

Playing around with the position of the colour tag can create some unusual effects too
    [color=Aquamarine][u][b] [color=Pink]Test[/color] [/b][/u][/color]
    BB Code

  • I used the sub tags for the headings like appearance as they can appear quite effective as slim versions. Less size means that they appear more defined, especially with coloured text and underlines

  • Other tags that I have used are abbr and Pre.
    Pre is framed sections

...but I rarely use these as they tend to look ugly on my CS designs.

Give me 6 months and I'll be using a completely different style with a whole lot more formatting. Can't help it... It's addicting.

EDIT : Two things...
First, I also use Indent........ ALOT!!!!
Secondly, Click the Raw link up the top to check out my formatting. Sometimes seeing the code can help explain some things.

EDIT 2 : Just noticedon mobile the underline trick shows up differently. On pc it appears as a different colour to the text, yet on mobile it's split into the colour of the line and the colour of the text. Mobile version of this site produces some odd effects sometimes.

The Mysteries of Awilix is a space/fantasy roleplay set on a distant planet far, far away. This roleplay has been a concept of mine that has been continually tweaked and modified ever since it's very first iteration almost 3 years ago under the previous name of "Escaping Extinction". While the overall design may be different through each generation there are a few key factors that have always remained the same.

» The Roleplay is always set in the distant future on mysterious planet.
» Mankind will be challenged with their right to survive, both through their own actions and the will of the universe.
» The world is filled with an assortment of mysteries and secrets, created by both players and the GMs.

For the most part this roleplay will be a mixture of some Slice of Life, Adventure and maybe some traces of Action on top. I do have a few plot elements thought up as possibilities along with a log term expansion goal, but I've never been the type of person to lead an audience on a grand journey of wonder and awe through story telling and narrative. In a nut shell I'm more of a creator and a designer. I can whip up mysteries and twists for my own characters but tend to have difficulty driving other players with manufactured objectives. If you keep that in mind you should enjoy this RP quite well.

A celestial object known as Lunosity's Comet was discovered at the turn of the century on the outer edges of the Sol System. It was granted the power of an unshakable path, a path that would lead into the largest meteor impact seen since the dinosaurs. It was only a matter of decades before the human race would cease to exist and widespread panic engulfed the very world itself, plunging it into a period where despair and sadness flooded the very lands.

H U M A N I T Y ' S L A S T H O P E
In a desperate attempt to challenge the will of the universe the leaders of humanity bonded together to create the Noah II, a space craft with the capabilities of transporting 100 million, cryogenically frozen bodies to the outer regions of space. It was on the 11th hour of the impact that the vessel finally left Earth's atmosphere, set on a predetermined course for the nearest inhabitable planet. As with all good plans variables were missed, surprises were discovered and the last few decades of preparation were almost all for naught as they left their home world for the first and last time.

The Noah II had managed to guide itself into an uncharted cloud of debris that originated from Lunosity's Comet itself. With heavy damage to the outer hull, a mass power loss resulting in the death of millions of sleepers and a contamination breach that was unable to be resolved, the transport was plunged into turmoil leaving speculation for whether avoiding the destiny of death was nothing more than an illusion.

T H E A C Q U I S I T I O N O F A W I L I X
It was five years later when the Noah II eventually reached it's final destination, Awilix. This small moon is a satellite beaming with an endless variety of flora and fauna. Much of it's surface is blanketed in a thick jungle that spreads from the highest of mountain ranges to the lowest of valleys. Oddly enough there is little in the way of large oceans but rivers, lakes and streams spread their roots throughout every crevice, ravine and gully, leaving many to believe that the plant life is nurtured by a mixture of bore water and underground seas. Awilix itself orbits a dead shell of a planet, a parental rock appropriately named Husk.

Husk is a very different world compared to Awilix. It is a lifeless body with a deep crater that spreads over a third of it's entire surface, leaving it's exposed core visible to anyone that casts their gaze up to the pseudo moon. The core itself glows with an intense heat, forming a dim, orange hue that warms up the coldest of nights.

On the surface of Awilix there now lies a one month old city known as The City of Landing or simply Landing. Landing was formed when a Noah II drop pod that was launched down towards the inhabitable surface, touching-down on a location that has a perfect view of it's parent world throughout it's day and night. With every passing day the city expands, carving it's way through the jungle and wilderness, slowly growing like a virus to cater for the millions of people that are trying desperately to survive.

T H E D I S C O V E R Y O F L U N O S
Upon awakening from their slumber the remaining surviving members of the human race began to notice several abnormalities and changes to their bodies. This sparked a period of widespread confusion and concerned, resulting in an immediate investigation. What they discovered was the most peculiar of discoveries.

The Human genome had been altered, a section of DNA twisted and manipulated by the very contamination that had infected the Noah. Five years of being untreated had resulted in each and every human being granted a unique, magic like ability; allowing people to control the very elements around them, to perform tasks that were previously impossible. These abilities were dubbed the name Lunos, a tribute to the comet itself, and many viewed it as the next step of human evolution.

While there are endless possibilities to what abilities one would gain, a series of key traits were discovered.

» A Lunos does not vastly alter the appearance of one's body.
While there have been some noticeable changes, there have not been any recorded cases where the human body has changed to something that is far beyond human.
» Lunos acts in the same way as magic casting.
A Lunos ability takes time to master as it is a skill as well as a power. Lunos also uses the body's natural energy meaning that the person's fitness, stamina, mental health and food intake will affect it's overall usability. Each user will need to learn where their limits lie and how their Lunos affects them as an individual.
» Not all Lunos will have positive effects.
A large majority of Lunos users have abilities that are classed as safe, manageable, or completely useless. For the small minority there are abilities that can be quite dangerous, not only to the individual themselves but those that may be around them.
» When a Lunos is in use the user's eyes will glow a gold colour.
Some users may have a permanent gold shade in their eyes while others may only express a quick flash. The general rule that seems to be expressed by the people is that whenever the ability is activated the eyes will change colour.

E V E N T S O F C U R R E N T
One month after the arrival on Awilix and the City of Landing has become quite a busy location with much of the local population set to immediate work in helping expand the metropolis into the nearby jungle. A large portion of these people were given the important task of bulldozing the surrounding foliage in order to make room for a bombardment of drop pod style homes, all launched towards the surface directly from the Noah II. Others were sent off on exhibitions to learn about the surrounding areas, catalogue the available resources and discover any traces of past civilisations; no stone was to be left unturned.

Due to the delicacy of terraforming an urban environment onto a foreign planet only 20% of the population has been awaken and sent down to Awilix with the remaining humans still sleeping in hibernation. The current plan is for 5 percent of the population to be sent down to the new home world every three months, a four year plan that aims in introducing the entire human species successfully onto the moon. Sadly of the remaining total approximately 30 million humans were discovered to have passed away during the journey. This is mostly due to the stresses of deep space hibernation, the intensity of the Lunos contamination and failure in the cryogenic management system within certain sectors.

Unfortunately the act of trying to replicate thousands of years of history into a single month only brings about an endless list of problems. Without a fully functional government, a lack of agriculture, a disjointed military force, and the chaos of Lunos, a series of crime and corruption has begun to leech it's way into the city. Rumours of black market dealings have travelled like Chinese whispers, a recent document was found showing a series of high profile criminals that managed to secure a spot on the Noah II's short list, and murmurs of a psychopathical killer known as Eidolon are amongst the many problems that are slowly erupting.

Nothing more can be said except that with each passing day humanity will eventually uncover The Mysteries of Awilix.

Technology has advanced quite remarkably ever since the first sightings of Lunosity's Comet with every day bringing about something new and exciting.

T H E N O A H I I
The Noah II is the most complex creation that humanity has ever bought to life, a godly sized spacecraft who's sole purpose is to transport as much of the human population away from Earth as possible. It does so by placing the inhabitants into a deep hibernation, thus protecting their bodies along the harsh journey and only awakening them once they have reached their destination.

Once in orbit the space craft is be able to launch it's payload down onto the new home world planet. The first deployment that was issued was The City of Landing along with 20% of the entire population. The locals on the ground would have to work tooth and nail to ensure that they can create a suitable clearings for the subsequently smaller facility pods. These pods are able to spontaneously create an assortment of residential and industrial districts, eliminating the need for on world inhabitants to set up a traditional construction industry.

Inside the core of the galactic transport is a fully automated assembly center, a facility capable of building almost anything from micro satellites to personnel vehicles, from various robotics and even weapons. These items are then able to be shipped towards the city in a week by week basis or, in the case of satellites, sent into outer space. In order to prevent the population from abusing this system a financial exchange has been set up inside Landing, monitoring the work and income of each civilian.

Finally, the Noah II has been equipped with a uniquely crafted AI system; a slave conscious who's sole purpose is to assist the human race in it's quest for relocating to another world. The decision to make the Noah II self aware has resulted in little need for there to be any working personnel on the craft itself as the AI has the ability to perform it's own maintenance and daily rituals. For the people of Landing they barely have the opportunity to interact with the Noah interface directly, instead they will regularly receive job sheets and important information that allows them to go about their daily and working lives.

The primitive days of surgeries and pills are almost fully forgotten, replaced with advanced medical healing pod and synthetic liquid concoctions. Rather than allowing the body heal itself the individual is placed into one of these capsules and falls into a brief coma, all whilst the artificial fluid is injected into the body. This fluid is able to reads the genetic structure of the patient, flow towards the damaged cells and reverse engineer any abnormalities that the body has experienced. It is an effective method of healing that only takes a few hours to complete. One limitation of this technology is that it can only reset the human body back to how it is described in the human genome, meaning that the Lunos ability can never be removed through this level of tech.

R O B O T I C S
If one was able to afford it they can purchase a personal droid. These robots come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours; never going beyond the size of an average human, never smaller than that of a football. They do not have a fully functional AI with most used as pets, security bots, or personal servants. Several robots have been shipped into the black market so they can be sold off and refurbished into something a little more exotic. Any individual caught with a black market bot is dealt with heavily, but with so many custom variations it has become a hard task to police the illegals from the authentic bots.

T R A N S P O R T A T I O N
The Noah II houses a large library of vehicular blueprints, selecting out the best options for the planet's unique conditions including ATBs, Wasps, Haulers, and Carriers.

All-Terrain-Bikes have become a very popular item within the limits of Landing due to the condensed nature of the city. These self-balancing vehicles allow the riders to nimbly duck in and out all the alleyways and street while taking up little room when placed within storage. They are useful on most hard terrains but have difficulty in soft and wet conditions.

Wasps are one of the smallest of flyers, a single person craft that can manoeuvre at breathtaking speed. They are excellent for scouting and regular patrols but lack any heavy armaments or protection. Most of these vehicles will be operated by authorities or loaned out to aspiring individuals.

Haulers are a two pilot craft, capable of lifting several tonnes of weight thanks to it's powerful, robust engines. These vehicles are slow, sluggish and lack all weapon capabilities.

Carriers are amongst the largest of craft that traverse the skies above Landing. With the capability to move approximately 1,000 civilians at any given time they are excellent for transporting people and workers around the city. Local authorities do have their own carriers which are heavily plated, allowing them to enter any dangerous areas relatively safely.

W E A P O N S
Gauss has become the industry standard for any firearms, a system that uses electronics and magnetism to fire a desired projectile faster, more accurate and with less wear and tear on the machine. Other types of projectiles available include laser and plasma but due to their inherent nature the weapons themselves can either be power hungry or dangerous to use.

Compared to the past on Earth there is a heavy emphasis on weapon registration and ownership within Landing. All shipment sent down from the Noah II are required to have an assigned user's ID before the weapon can be accessed or operated; a process designed to monitor any dangerous or criminal activity. While this system works well, it does not account for black market dealings and modifications.

R U L E S & I N F O
Sometimes I dislike the fact that I have to add in rules when most people should know what they are doing in the first place, but alas, if I do not then I am only hindering the roleplay itself.

» Treat one another as you want to be treated
Yes I am going all religious on this one, but this should cover the majority of attitude based problems. Respect your GM and any Co-GMs, treat your fellow players with the decency that they deserve, and understand that my primary concern is the progression of this roleplay and the comfort of the players. Any individual who challenges that will be removed from the RP.
» Powerplaying, Metagaming, Godmodding, etc
Don't do it. If you do not understand any of these terms then please read this page: [Common Rules of Roleplaying]
» Posting and Collaborations
This roleplay will be moving along at a pace of about 1 or 2 posts per week, leaving enough time for each player to comfortably respond with a decent post. Any collaborate posts will not contain more than two players unless discussed with a GM or Co-GM. My reasoning is to prevent an accidental hold-up in the story progression while waiting for other players.
» The Inevitable Timeskip
If you have been paying attention to how the Noah II is populating Awilix you will notice that it will take several years to complete. I am planning a future timeskip much later down the line, which should be about 2-3 years. Not only will this allow players to start up later on, but it will aid in the plot progression.
» Discord [x]
I do have a Discord server set up for people that wish to chat. It's easy to join and will help connect you with your fellow players. Guild/RP rules will apply there so don't do anything to jeopardise your chances in participating.
» Inactivity and Dropping Players
Your own activity is your own concern. I will write out players that are unnecessarily inactive after a given amount of time, and I will not be chasing up players to post. If something should come up please inform me ahead of schedule.

C H A R A C T E R S H E E T I N F O
Below is a visual sample of the character sheet and a template for applicants to use. There are a few requirements that need to be noted for applying players:
» The Layout must be used. I like visual consistency, if it's not obvious already.
» Colours marked with xxxxxx can be changed, but no black or dark colours
» All characters shall be within the ages of 17 and 35 (12 and 30 when boarding the Noah II)
» Character images can be detailed Art pieces or Photos, but must suit the RP theme.
» I will critique the CS if amendments need to be made.
