I love many, many fictional universes so me trying to list them all is an effort in futility!
Generally my total war strategy is (and this will most likely be useful in this setting too).

I don't think people addressed this when I asked about army size earlier, but one of my main weaknesses is the fact I have less numbers than most. This is even evident despite the fact that about 2/3rds of a Dwarf hold population is fighting fit, contrasting the usual (historical) 1/4th of a human settlement is. So just keep in mind that if you ever fight my guys, and you don't specify that your force is small, generally I'll assume your army size is bigger than mine. My main focus is a moderate to low size army made up of powerful/elite units.
@Willy VerebIf I were you I'd make Ogre a different species, but still allied with your army. I was planning on using Ogres to be apart of my history as they are classically depicted to be something Dwarfs sometimes fight, which is why most of my units would be (semi)anti-large units. Then again, Trolls were going to be the bigger threat.
I'd like to point out I'm not new to 40k. I've read about 15+ novels for the universe and am a huge Dawn of War fan. I just never got around to the Eisenhorn/Ravenor stuff. BUT, noted! I shall get on those books ASAP. @Hank@Jbcool Oooo awesome! I'll get my guy done soon. @Quinntessential
