Trevor "Shadow" Stevens

The small town fell rather quiet while he walked, his pace was hampered a bit more than he thought it would. The small injury turned out to be troubling but at least nothing felt broken or ruptured in his back, one more thing to be thankful for. He could see a few troopers riding along down the road and waved at them.

The troopers rode up on him and stopped, “hey Jain wants all the leaders and supervisors to meet back at town” they looked a bit tired but otherwise looked fine except for one that looked like she had been crying.

Trevor put his sword away and looked up at the trio, “What’s the status on everyone else, I’m guessing we won?” he said as another single shot rang out in the distance.

The troopers looked among each other and seemed to be whispering, “Yeah we won, only looked like a small group got past us. But we had a couple casualty’s, April and Derrick. Only a few wounded I think.” The girl that was with them seemed distant.

With a sigh he rubbed his brow, “well that’s unfortunate, alright thanks for the info, continue your patrol and make sure the towns secure before joining back up with the others.”

The trooper nodded, “OK I’m guessing you don’t need a ride. And uh are you alright you're covered in blood” both male troopers eyed him over curiously.

The armored man paused for a moment and looked himself over, “no most of this isn’t mine and yeah I’ll walk back from here.” With a nod and a wave he headed off back toward the walled off town.

---------------------------------------------------

At least the walk back was peaceful, no gunshots or screams left his thoughts to wonder back to what those troopers had said before. It was always a worrying thought to have members of an expedition lose their lives, he could only hope that their deaths were worth it. Not only did they have to keep an eye on the morale of the troop but now they had to keep an eye on those that were close to them, the people of last hope are not well suited for loss of this sort.

This time the gate was open when he got to it, he could see several of the troopers and scouts already being mobbed by some town lady’s that insisted on thanking them. None of them approached him and to be honest it was probably for the best, the last thing he needed was Masiy to come out of nowhere and kick his ass which she still might do anyway. So the man limped over towards a nearby fire, the fire was small and looked to be for cooking. Taking out a small knife he rested it so that the tip was in the coals and began to take off his field bandage.

He heard a voice behind him that sounded strangely familiar, “hey, uh sorry about earlier the mayor told me to come and apologizes to you and the others” the man was one of the ones that were on the wall earlier and was most likely responsible for their leaders injury.

Yeah, well if you’re really sorry then you’ll go get a 5 gallon bucket of water and a couple towels or rags” he paused for a moment as his bandages were fully removed, “unless you want me to go breaking down doors looking for the well.”

The older man looked confused for a moment before wandering off, now Trevor had an unpleasant experience ahead of him. He’s done this before cauterized a wound, but it’s never an enjoyable experience. Carefully Trevor pulled out a small metal bottle about the size of his thumb and took a little of the yellow material inside out on his finger, spreading the foul smelling material over his wound he grimaced. It stung but would ultimately help, tree sap and honey was his father’s cure all disinfectant and healing salve, that you would think would smell good but never did. Next came the unfortunate part.

Sitting down next to the fire and grabbed a small stick his eye barely caught a bit of movement nearby. He had a bit of an audience, some kids were staring at him and all he could do was smile as he was about to traumatize some of them. Retrieving the blade from the fire he eyed the red-hot tip and while biting down on the stick ran the tip of the blade across his small open wound, his flesh sizzling with the heat of the blade, and he could barely stifle the low growl that escaped his mouth.

He sat there for a little while longer breathing hard and not moving as the man from earlier came back with the bucket of water, “here’s your water, and do you need anything else? Like a doctor?” the man sounded worried either about this chain mail wearing man, the smell of burning flesh, or the cringing and gagging children hanging around nearby.

“No I think I’m good. Oh wait which way to my glorious leader?” the man seemed a bit off put by Trevor and just pointed in a direction.

We cleared out a shed for her, there is already a few others there” the man set the bucket down and dropped the rag down next to it. Eyeing the stranger over one last time the older man wandered off towards the kids shooing them off further into town.

It didn’t take long for the ever so slightly injured Trevor to find the shed the man was talking about, a couple troopers were shooting the breeze outside talking about all the girls here and which ones they could get first. “Well at least they aren’t in too rough of spirits” he thought while setting the bucket down and opening the door. Just inside the door way he could see Jain laying down with James and Maisy nearby. “O hey guys, good to see that all of you are doing OK, don’t mind me or this” motioning to his blood stained clothes and skin. “I can truthfully say that most...” pausing for a moment to look at Maisy, “of it is not mine” he smiled sheepishly and shrugged his shoulders waiting for the punch he knew he would receive eventually.

The tall man closed the door and slowly limped over to the opposite corner with his bucket in hand, “don’t mind me I just need to clean myself off.” Again he smiled nervously at Maisy before taking off his chain mail and took off his clothes opting to quickly clean off the blood and grim quickly and hoping that Maisy wouldn’t make a big deal about his injured leg that for the time being wasn’t bleeding. After cleaning himself off he went to cleaning off his clothes, sitting down with his clothes drip drying off of any small little edge or hook he set to work with the smaller rag and began to clean off his chain mail.

Occasionally he would check his leg and eventually spoke up, “towns secure, ran into a small group of the thugs and one got lucky. I’m assuming that you’re all aware of the casualty’s on the hill, April and Derek.” He paused for a moment looking between them, “it’s a shame really but so far the troopers in town either don’t know or don’t care and are focusing on the local lady’s” his voice was rather mono tone, he wasn’t quite sure what the general feel for the two they lost today would be. “The leader of these bandits seemed to have run off when the Calvary charged I think anyways. With your permission I would like to interrogate the thug you brought in earlier and if able have me and my strike team go in and take out the threat.” He may have been speaking out of turn, but he was still rather upset.

in case your wondering Gaze is the 5 year old.

Isaac Warnock

Morning in the orphanage was always an early start, get up and ration out the fungus and water. The garden that his sister Aquila tends too is always the first place to go, built in a small maintenance passage he found while expanding some rooms. It’s one more thing that helps keep costs down while still being able to sell the access. There is also a large water purifier down there that both filters the water and keeps the small closed off hallway moist and damp for the fungus.

He was joined shortly thereafter by the slender blond haired female, her glossy green eyes were still only half awake when she began to pick and harvest the food from the walls. They didn’t speak to each other right away, “good morning Aquila” was all he had to say and got a simple growl in return before they silently picked and harvested the food for the morning. At least they had gotten lucky with their fungus. It was a fast growing strain that required a bit more attention than normal but was plentiful. The girl he called his sister was for all intents and purposes his family, both orphaned at a young age. The two were joined by another, Duke, a smooth talking short man that helped out with the kids and getting the local gangs and constables from putting too much pressure on them.

Heading back upstairs to the small cafeteria, some kids were up and about with others still sleeping. They prepared 4 meals a day for everyone, if they wanted some they ate if they didn’t get there on time they had to wait. A simple lesson eat while you have something and don’t be late. No exceptions or favorites were ever made, the single exception was if they were sick or injured to the point that they needed someone to care for them. Luckily Isaac never really had that problem, sure the kids would get into scuffles or get ruffed up now and then, but he never had any serious issues.

With a smile and a thank you the kids came up one at a time and took their ration of food and water and disappearing off into the maze of smaller corridors and rooms that made up the orphanage. If it wasn’t for the older children helping out and some children that are no longer children but still come and help out on occasion it would be difficult for just the three of them to take care of the 41 children. His magpies helped each other, the older children teaching the younger children how to survive, steal, and live in the confines of the slums while staying safe and out of trouble… For the most part.

His eyes eventually rested on the slender red haired pale skinned figure of their youngest resident. “Good morning Gaze” the five-year old smiled and yawned dragging a patchwork teddy bear with her. Normally Isaac only took in adolescents between the ages of 8 and 16 but this girl was a special case, she had dreams and visions that were vivid and occasionally correct. He knew if the local constables knew of this they would raid this location and take her most likely killing everyone else, something about the girl told him she was worth the risk even if the others didn’t agree.

The girl was the last in line and smiled when she received her food, “did you sleep well?” Isaac asked.

The girl yawned and shook her head, “no I had a weird dream again” the girl spoke as she began to eat her food.

Isaac began to portion out the rest of the food for any stragglers and the rest to be sold, “what was weird about this one? Did you see that cool jungle warrior again?” he giggled recounting some story’s she told him before.

“No I saw this big pool of water swirling down into the dark area you go to. And then and then this big bright light came from the sky and smashed into the center.” The girl was very animated with her arm movements and explanations even adding her own sound effects, “the, the swirling water had flashes of red and I could hear the machines, they sounded angry. Like you and Aquila when you're wrestling for food.”

He smiled but listened to what she was talking about, even though she was young she was very smart and understood things even the older kids had problems understanding. “That does sound like a weird dream. Did you see anything else?”

The girl got quiet and looked at her food, “no” she said sheepishly. She paused for a shot while poking her food, “are you going back down there again?”

The tall man was surprised for only a moment before looking back to the girl with a sigh, “yes, I got a strange invite through some private connections. I have a weird feeling about this one

Gaze sighed and smiled, “be safe okay, its dangerous out there something woke up and…” the girl trailed off and visibly shivered, “it felt like something was staring at me.”

With a laugh he reached over and roughed the girl’s hair, “I’ll be safe and I’ll be back in a few days or maybe a week or two. So you be good for Quilly and duke, and they will take care of you” Gaze seemed satisfied with this answer and took her food elsewhere. “What a strange young lady” he thought while he finished separating the rest of the fungus for sale.

There was still many things to be done by the time the food was separated, yet he knew he had to get ready, he was a diver after all and it was time to go to work. The man made his way back to his room and pried open a hidden hatch in the small room under his bed. The underground was cold and unwelcoming, but it helped him get into the mindset he needed to do his job and get out alive.

A small dark room was all it was, quiet and only hummed to life when Isaac struck a few cords and some red emergency lights blinked on. Before him was his work bench and tools with his suit propped up in the corner. Within the next half an hour and a few double checks later Isaac was quite sure he hadn’t missed anything and left the confines of the small room. His suit aided by the A-class catalyst was easily able to move the heavy metal wall in between the room and the maintenance corridors outside. He checked for a moment and made sure he had everything and that it didn’t look like the wall was false before finally ducking and crawling through maintenance corridors and dodging motion sensors and alarms heading for the meeting place.

---------------------<<<<<Some time later>>>>>----------------------------

The trek to this location was odd and at times he ended up having to cut away at the tunnels, so he could get through. Moving above ground for long periods was not an option even with the big heavy trench coat of his the moment someone sees his suit and narcs on him to the magistrates he would have the whole dam sector baring down on him. This paranoia that’s going on with them has them just begging to show their strength and make examples of people.

Yet he could tell that something was off with this area the hustle and bustle of people and voices above him slowly faded and even the maintenance tunnels began to clear out and open up. Until suddenly it was quiet, and he reached a dead end, the grate above him looked loose enough to get open. So being as quiet as possible he stood up and lifted the grate up and over as quiet as he could and hopped up. Placing the grate back to where it was with barely a sound he drew his broken pistol and charged it.

White electricity danced across the gun and his hand while he moved from corner to corner. The clean quiet streets reminded him of the seldom times he had been in the more expensive districts, this revelation put him on edge, perhaps this was some kind of trap or experiment the magistrates were conducting. Being as careful and quiet as he could he crept up to the silent sounds of voices and paused, he listened for some time before peeking around the corner with his pocket mirror only to see a robot a child and a girl. “Hmm… they don’t look like constables. Only one way to find out.” He thought to himself.

The armored man hesitated for a moment as the girl drew a gun and pointed it down the other end of the alley. He could only hope that this girl wasn’t trigger-happy as he eyed the alley. There were a few small places for cover he could duck to if it became a shootout and by the looks of her firearm he would be able to take a few hits without getting injured too bad before his armor would fail. “Well let’s go say hi” he thought as he stepped around the corner, his white sparking gun at the ready. He had to admit that he did look similar in some way to some older power suits the magistrates used but otherwise continued his approach until he was just behind the last bit of good cover between himself and the others.

“Oi!” he spoke loud, so they could hear him, “you lot here for the party too?” he didn’t lower his gun, but he wasn’t pointing it directly at them either, he simply kept it in a readied position.

I had a question for you, with Isaac running an orphanage I was thinking of him having a small girl that has visions and you did say your character had children she gave back to the city. you ok with her being one of her children? of course no one would know, the child would simply tell stories of a bad ass girl roaming the wastes and fighting the mechanical monsters lol.
@Excal
that was a good read
@RyuShura
