Asteria

While lightly dozing, Asteria still heard Digbie doing his honest work – or perhaps she was already dreaming, the sound now even a part of her subconsciousness – but nonetheless, was still aware enough to recognize something wrong, something different. She wished to fall asleep, but instead opened her eyes and forced her body to uncurl and stretch once again, her eyes quickly flicking from tunnel point to tunnel point, assessing whether anything was wrong. She noticed a lizard-like worm hatch from an egg, and her assumption that it might be Rain was confirmed by the female’s voice as she announced she would be leaving. She analysed Rain with the proper skill, only because she wanted to know what manner of creature the lizard was now, after her ‘evolution’. “I don’t like this place either, Rain, but I cannot leave, not quite yet,” Asteria managed to explain to the lesserwurm before she suddenly burrowed under the ground and presumably headed towards the cave’s exit.

Still tired and yet agitated, Asteria dug out a small-sized rock, wrapped her tail firmly around it, and proceeded to do an exercise that could have kindly been called weight-lifting. While she did so, she relocated to the exit of Jason’s tunnel, and crouched low at it, gazing outside, focusing on her sight to try and discern whether there were any enemies outside or whether she had begun hallucinating. Lack of sleep for such a short period of time shouldn’t cause that, but if it did, would seeing something truly reflect reality? Ack, don’t mess your own mind up, girl! Asteria huffed and continued her tail-training until she heard what she thought was a shout, or perhaps it was a shuffling gait. “Digbie, I’m going to check the premises, I think something, or someone might be close to us…” That said, she dropped the rock from her tail, and walked slowly but steadily outside. Not only did she move quieter like this, she also had the opportunity to swing her head left and right, sweeping the surroundings thoroughly.

It was because of that caution that Asteria saw the zombie-skeleton as soon as she did. She inhaled sharply but didn’t dare shout for Digbie’s help – she did not know how well the stumbling creature’s senses worked. It certainly seemed to be looking at something, however Asteria had the feeling that what it saw was either something she did not or that it was looking for something irrelevant to her. Relatively confident that she could take the single enemy out or at the very least slow it down without being heavily injured herself, Asteria crouched, contracted all her muscles, then jumped into a running start, pushing into a quick acceleration, dashing madly at a diagonal towards the skeleton. When she was close enough, she turned her body slightly and used all her momentum in the swing of her tail as she used it to lash directly at the skeleton’s knees. She then quickly turned to face the skeleton directly, and used her tail, paws, and jaws opportunistically, aiming to knock down the skeleton onto the ground and smash its skull into pieces. She hoped that even though it had no flesh nor any brains, turning the skull to dust would still be enough to kill it, again.

Asteria

Touching the core and trying to drain it felt remarkably like Asteria was suddenly submerged into a deep cold ocean, drifting down, deeper and deeper, drowning. She felt the pressure of it against all her senses and struggled to block the oppressive feeling from overwhelming her. However, the sensation passed as swiftly as it had begun, until all that was left was a brief paranoia of being watched. Asteria removed her paw from the red crystal spike, and looked left and right, trying to find the watcher, but knowing she wouldn’t. That made her uneasy, and her fur fluffed up a bit as the suspicion raced coolly down her spine, leaving her tingling, alert, and aware, her tiredness forgotten for the moment.

She refocused on Jason as soon as she noticed him stirring, though his waking words were unexpectedly aggressive. She opened her maw with a distinct rat-like frown present and was just about to give him her piece of mind, when he visibly reigned himself in. He then explained himself telepathically, and Asteria noted he no longer needed physical contact to message them mind-to-mind. She focused on what he was communicating as much as she was on trying to feel the foreign mana she assumed would be present while Jason used his telepathy. Next thing she knew, Jason had already reached for her with a pseudopod, and was apparently talking to the crystal, announcing that she was to be his subordinate. Confused as to why exactly Jason did such a thing, she nonetheless activated Mana Sense while they still had physical contact, though instead of trying to read his general magic affinity, Asteria concentrated on sending a short “OK” through the mental link. Whether he received her affirmative response or not, Jason curled into a ball and barrelled straight out of his tunnel.

A wisp – Asteria thought he might be the one she knew as Danny from that Lorek incident way back, even though one glowing ball wasn’t that different from another glowing ball – and Ed followed Jason soon after, while a pixie she still didn’t know the name of said his goodbye. “Good call. I’d love to sleep too. See you later,” she waved a bit carelessly with her paw, not caring just then whether they would actually see each other again or not. As she had said, she was tired. With that in mind, she curled into a ball next to Mother Rat, and focused on slowing her breath, clearing her mind, and keeping partially alert to the sounds of trouble. However, she hadn’t even managed to doze before being interrupted by Jason shouting that everyone should die. The hell? Did he meet the rest of the enemy goblins or what? Asteria wanted to dash off and go check out what was happening but remembered Jason’s insistence that someone stay at his base and guard the crystal.

Feeling restless, she silently joined Digbie in his digging, doing the mindless task to burn her remaining energy and doing her best to not think of that presence she now knew existed and which may or may not be constantly watching them all. She pushed her whole body into each shove, using leverage and force to her advantage as she dug. Determined to get a proper work-out, she even focused on her newly gained magical sense, concentrating on feeling that mysterious energy flowing within her, prodding and pushing at it to try and get it to imbue her muscles, especially her arms. After long moments of digging, when she felt properly exhausted, barely keeping her eyes open and almost having to drag herself to walk, Asteria plopped down right next to Mother Rat, nearby the dungeon core, and fell asleep. Before oblivion claimed her, she focused on her hearing, hoping that even asleep, she could react swiftly enough if anything noteworthy and/or dangerous happened.

Ann-Katrin dutifully noted the male's name, and snorted mildly at his teasing. “Yeah, well, I’m still not used to this place or the people around here. Hope you don’t mind a new arrival too much,” Kat raised a curious eyebrow at Tien. “Huh, so you use magic together with that maul, then?" Ann continued, going along with the general good mood, though his was almost over the top.

“And what kind of a weird thing do you have in mind? Besides, my skill is something like an illusion, but I need a beast’s blood to get it going. I tested it on those horned killer bunnies,” she explained with a shrug. “Though if there’s rubble falling regularly, scouting out the ruins might not be as helpful.” Ann frowned slightly, making a mental note that not only were there skeletons to look forward to, the castle ruin's environment was going to be hazardous as well. She also memorized what little information he had about the ruin, pondering over whether it were possible to make an efficient plan for such a potentially chaotic venture.

Katrin nodded at Tien’s suggestion, and was just about to make off on her own and get to recruiting, when two females approached, both shorter than her, one a blonde with light blue eyes, while the littlest one appeared rather boyish with her short black hair. The dark-haired one was also the one to address them, and Kat smiled a pleased smile at the fortuitous encounter. “I met up with Tien over here,” she began, nodding at the male besides her “because I overheard that same conversation. We intend to go to the southern castle ruins, kill some skeletons, and most importantly, try and get some riches while doing so, yes.”

“My name is Ann-Katrin,” she introduced herself, and stuck out her right hand to the boyish female, though she’d offer it to the blonde right after as well. “And if you happen to be in a bit of a pinch for money, as I am, this adventure is a good opportunity for all of us to get more than the daily grind provides. Interested?”

Asteria couldn’t run as fast as she had wanted, because Mother Rat showed her tiredness by moving a bit more sluggish than usual. Nonetheless, they eventually arrived at Jason’s cave, and the first thing Asteria – and probably everyone else – noticed was the large green crystal, within which a red core was growing and spreading. While Jason experimented with looking at the large crystalline formation with a smaller green crystal of his own, Asteria looked over the cave, and noted the 11 Healing herbs, though one of them was an ominous black instead of a healthy fresh green.

Since their…leader was still busy, Asteria approached the garden. She now knew that the green herbs could heal one fully – and how had no one mentioned that to her before?! – because she had eaten one from the lake shore and immediately felt her injuries and aches dissipating. It wouldn’t surprise her if that meant the herbs also contained magic. She put a paw on one of the green ones and mentally flicked the Mana sense on long enough that she was able to momentarily sense the green herb, then flicked it back off. Now that she had a proper skill, it really was as simple as having a psychical light switch that she could turn on or off with her mind.

The green herb, while Asteria focused on sensing its mana, had the faint but sure feeling of nature, health, and goodness. It wouldn’t surprise Asteria at all if it had used the ambient magic to grow then “converted” the mana for its own use. Asteria drew her paw back from the green herb and warily approached the black one. This was surely a significantly worse idea, but she wanted to know what the heck was going on with all this sudden permeating darkness and death. Was it really the case that they had killed too many creatures in too short of a time period? Or was it something else? After all, there had surely been plenty of killing before they as humans were reincarnated into some of the monster inhabitants of this cave…so perhaps a warring intention was the key difference that was beginning to change the cave.
Thus, Asteria put her paw on the black herb, and once again flicked her Mana Sense on long enough to get a feel for the plant, as it were.

She was a bit discomfited by what she discovered, but not as disturbed as she was by Jason’s shout proclaiming he wanted to become the Dungeon’s new master. This better not mean he’ll suddenly turn into an enemy or something. With that grumbling thought, Asteria finally left the herbs to their own devices and joined a panicked Ed in trying to help Jason. The Earth Mage slime was slumped at the base of the large green crystal, straight red thorns of new crystal formation beginning their approach. Suddenly, Jason regained his senses long enough to throw himself at the crystal, getting kind of impaled by the red crystalline thorns in the process. “…I think he might want whatever is happening to happen, Ed?” she tried to reassure him, but the questioning tone of her encouragement gave away her own confusion.

“Let me see…” she trailed off as she approached Jason and the green crystal with its red core. She cautiously lifted her paw and put a single crooked finger on one of the red tendrils, then activated her Mana Sense once again. Asteria assumed that the crystal was bound to have some magic, and so focused on diverting some of its energy away from Jason and towards herself. She was tense and ready to withdraw at the first sense of trouble, but both aware and utterly terrified of what would happen if she were overwhelmed or have her sense and spirit burned or whatever the heck the crystal might do to her while Jason was interacting with it.

Asteria

Asteria was just about to leave the lake and head back to the goblin boss’s corpse, when she was interrupted by the system message that notified her of two level-ups and the option to evolve. Instead of heading back to the group, she crouched in a shadow next to a rock some meters away from the lake and studied her options. So many interesting skills, and so many of them that would be hard to get on my own…Now which ones to choose? Asteria knew she wanted to invest a bit into magic, purely out of curiosity, but how much should she?

Certainly, there was also utility in magic, as had clearly been demonstrated by Jason’s earth affinity magic attack that had finished off the boss. But she was still worried about the whole mana regeneration issue – the only ways she knew for sure to regenerate mana were sleeping or using one the steadily diminishing number of mana crystals. There probably existed skills that could help to restore mana naturally, as evidenced by the Meditate and Mana Drain options that she apparently had in the list of unusable skills. The question Asteria was deliberating over was whether to invest so much into one of them or not. In the end, she decided to take a bit of a risk… “5 points to Mana Sense. 9 points to Mana Drain,” she said, then waited a bit for the changes to take effect.

Next, she studied and thought over the evolution options. Adult rat, Ratman and Mongrel are all attractive options. The first two can practice dexterity and crafting, while the last one is a strong predator…I wonder how Mother Rat would react to any such evolution though, especially if I turned into an obviously different species.

Asteria was unable to finalize her decision in regard to evolving, partly because she wasn’t certain what to aim for and partly because she was interrupted by the ominous system message and concurrent change in the environment. She could practically smell the now heavily permeating scent of death, could see how darkness became a definite, solid part of the environment. …Is this because of all the senseless slaughter we were involved in? We just made this cave into some sort of a…a zombie/apocalypse horror-setting. Should we just leave? Or take responsibility and try to fix it? And what will the remaining enemy goblins do? Asteria was now pondering on something else, but was interrupted yet again – this time by Jason’s shouting demand to follow him. Asteria, despite everything, couldn’t help but feel suspicious that he, of all people, seemed to know exactly what was going on…But she felt that trying to fix the situation was probably the moral, correct decision. Though if things turned south, she was more than ready to suggest that they run.

With that in mind, Asteria focused on her sight and scanned the cave, hoping to catch sight of Jason as he made off wherever it was he wanted to go. Conveniently for her, Jason soon rolled straight past her, heading even further into the depths of the cave, to an area almost directly opposite of where she remembered the Dire Rats’ nesting area to be. Asteria then nudged Mother Rat, squeaked a few times, and even added, “Please follow me. This is important!” Hoping the monster ally would follow as usual, Asteria used her speed to an advantage as she made a mad dash after Jason until she caught up. She saw that Digbie and a pixie were already following Jason and joined the group.

“So, we have some more craziness to deal with? Jason, you seem to have an idea what might be going on…Also, I’m assuming the others are still on their way. I wouldn’t want to handle this whole death vibe thingy with just the four of us.”

Asteria

With their overwhelming numbers and a forceful unending barrage of attacks, they won. Of course, they won. The goblin boss was utterly confused at how such an odd group of monsters had even managed to get together and his lack of understanding made him truly pitiful in Asteria’s eyes. But he just had to die, that was all. Morningstar also made a rather good point of taking whatever they had a need or use for from the dead guy, so Asteria looked over the corpse to see whether it had anything she could use. The only thing that made sense for her to take was the vine belt wrapped around him, so she approached and first tried finding the knot and simply untying it.

If untying it with her paws failed, she would simply chew trough the belt and tug both pieces free. That done, she wrapped as much around her hips, belly, and chest as she could, tying the belt off in a simple knot. So equipped, she tried moving around, running a circle or three to see whether her new bulkiness overly affected her speed and maneuverability. If it proved to be the case that she was too heavy with the whole vine belt wrapped around her, she would simply chew through and drop off whatever she deemed too much and wear only as much as she was comfortable with. Once Asteria felt comfortable with the arrangement of the vine belt around her, she notified the others of her intentions, all the while ignoring the barbaric and pointless beheading of the goblin boss. “Guys, I’m going to that lake to wash off a bit, refresh, and hydrate. In case any of you still don’t know, there are poison traps around the goblin bonfire, so if you walk around there, be careful where you step.”

Asteria then headed towards Mother Rat, nudged her slightly and tried to convey to the larger Dire Rat to follow her once again – Asteria rather enjoyed the security of not wandering around alone, because even if the goblins were retreating, it wouldn’t do to assume the cave was suddenly safe. Asteria waited a bit for Mother Rat to follow her, giving her time in case she wanted to eat or check on her and Ed, then made her way towards the lake, ignoring and pushing through the injuries and aches she had accumulated during the fight. She would simply ask a pixie later to heal her, or just sleep it off, but for now, she really wanted a drink – even if only the non-alcoholic variant was available.

And so, in a possibly impetuous decision, Asteria walked to the south-ward lake. Once again, she sacrificed some of her speed to try and get there without notifying any nearby monsters to her presence. She also tried being alert to and aware of the possibility of such an enemy approaching or ambushing her, but her tiredness might have mitigated her efforts. Nonetheless, once Asteria made it to the lake, she shuffled right to the edge of the shore. With a deep sigh, she lowered her muzzle to the clear surface, and happily guzzled down some water. Next, she washed mud off her face, using her paws to do so. Not exactly confident in her ability to swim, she crawled into the lake extremely cautiously, arranging her body so her whole front arms remained on the lake-shore, ready to pull her up and out if she felt her body and fur getting too heavy. After her was done, she got out, furiously shook her fur off as if she were a dog, and curiously looked at the rare herb scattered here or there around the lake. Feeling a bit peaky, Asteria ate one without giving the action much thought. Plants simply seemed more appetizing than goblin flesh. That done, she headed back (presumably with Mother Rat in tow) to where the large group of her allies was probably still gathered around the boss’s corpse.

As soon as the male noted that there was a person interested in him and his story, he practically overflowed with excitement, and Katrin couldn’t help but wonder whether he was manic or something. Nevertheless, she listened as he recounted what she assumed to be a legend or at the very least a well-known story. She nodded, gasped, and expressed her amazement at the appropriate moments. The man was quite the able story-teller, she had to admit, even though his unfaltering cheerfulness may have been slightly suspect.

Kat nodded as the man finished, somewhat impressed how the male had managed to draw her in with his tale. It certainly was an exciting thing, if not exactly persuasive. “The money is real, you say,” she replied neutrally, as if assessing his claim but not judging or outright doubting it. “You sound certain about that,” she noted, with that same tone. She then nodded once, decisively, and looked him straight in the eye, a small smile playing about her lips. “Alright. I’m willing to help you,” she declared, then stuck out her hand in greeting. “My name is Ann-Katrin by the way, but Kat is fine if you prefer.”

The greeting over with, Ann continued with a proposal. “Now, since I’m not the type to rush into such an unknown situation, let’s exchange some information first. I would also suggest that we try and find at least, say, three other people to join us. If the treasure part is real, I can’t help but assume the numerous wandering skeletons are a thing too,” she smirked. “I will help you advertise, of course,” she added with another firm nod.

Presuming they were to head to some populous location, Ann turned towards the centre of the city, intending to go elsewhere for recruiting purposes and hoping the admittedly handsome man was willing to go along with her advice. Even if he was as competent as his fitness level and the nature of his gear lead Ann to believe, she certainly had no illusions to the nature of her own abilities – she was a beginner, nothing more, nothing less. “To begin with, let me tell you a bit about myself. I don’t have much experience to be honest, but I’m good at using daggers and bringing down things when they’re not expecting me. A sneaky type, you could say.

“Also, if there are any mice, rats or other flesh-and-blood beasts in the old castle ruins, then I could use those to scout the grounds, maybe even find a good path towards wherever the treasure is. Assuming the skeletons don’t attack anything in their sight, even if it’s not humans, of course,”
Kat’s smile was a bit wan this time, though she valiantly tried to keep an optimistic outlook regarding what she may have gotten herself into. The possibility of earning more than the bare minimum for survival was quite tempting, but if the attempt killed her…Well, I just need to avoid dying again! With that decisive thought, she strengthened both her heart and mind. Knowing that she could still decide to not do this (even if it made her a coward and would most likely leave her feeling tremendously guilty afterwards) helped too.

“So!” she exclaimed, trying to not let the mood get weird. “What about you? You look like a reliable fighter, but what are you best at? Are there any particular skills or styles you’d like the other people we recruit to have? Other than that, whatever else you know about the ruins or the skeletons would be awesome to know, if you don’t mind sharing,” Katrin winked at the man, now feeling that this adventure was certainly doable, as long as they prepared as well as they could – and left themselves with the option of escape and failure if the risks didn’t prove worth the rewards.
Asteria

The fight with the trio of goblins was over soon, not at all surprising considering the mishmash group of humans-turned monsters (plus two Mothers) outnumbered them more than 2-to-1 once all the back-up was accounted for. Asteria still had a few pieces of goblin flesh left in her mouth and the taste was the most unappetizing thing one could find inside the cave, possibly even outside of it. She very much doubted that even cooking it could improve the taste, and spat out as much of the goblin blood and tissue as she could. I really want some water right now…But we’re still not finished. Jason and Edward rushed off to another fight, at the centre of which was a large enemy, though Asteria wasn’t immediately worried about it – as far as she could see, there were plenty of her allies already there. There was no rush to join them, though she did indeed intend to do so.

First things first…The Mother Slime once again attempted speech and was becoming more understandable already. “You can eat now, don’t worry,” Asteria told it, echoing Asura’s sentiment. She was rather curious how the slime would react to someone of a different species attempting to communicate with it. Well, the Mother slime would probably ignore her, since Asura had already spoken to it, and since he might be her offspring and as such the most trustworthy source to the larger slime. Out of curiosity, she used Monster Analysis I on the Mother slime to try and see if she could get any information whatsoever on its rather rapidly evolving ability of speech.

Next on Asteria’s agenda was to use her new sneaking skill to try and get closer to the supposedly important fight against the biggest goblin – probably the enemy’s boss, all things considered. Moving quietly towards the big guy and the various human-minded monsters surrounding it, she wondered whether her camouflage added to the sneaking attempt at all. Perhaps crouching low to the ground, moving between rocks and behind the cave-supporting pillars would even add to her newly obtained skill. The system had informed her that her sneaking was focused on reducing the sound of her movements after all, which could already be quite the advantage. Though a big guy like Rattleskull – she had heard Jason shouting its name – could very likely just stomp around and swing that club of his and kill them all.

Once Asteria was close enough to clearly see the fight against the boss goblin and assess the situation, but far enough to not get stomped on or swung at, she stopped and observed. The furry goblin was obviously injured, bleeding, partially blinded and possibly even poisoned, but still he struggled. Still, he managed to get hits in on some of the others. After clobbering Digbie however, a Wisp sliced into its leg with what Asteria guessed was a magic-based attack, and the female Dire rat couldn’t help but focus on the shimmering sharp blade. It was quite the elegant skill and apparently rather useful too. Next thing she knew, Jason’s rock spire stalagmites were sprouting from around the enemy boss, Ed was trying to climb up its back and a lizard up its injured leg, while a Wisp and a Pixie were harassing it by flying around its head. Digbie had also apparently recovered and was attacking the boss once again.

Seeing this honestly confusing jumble of bodies and what to Asteria felt like an over-crowded battle-field, she was slightly reluctant to join in but also thought that it was better to do so despite everything. The only thing she could think of doing right now that might help was to head straight in, darting around both her allies and enemy as well as their attacks, moving swiftly towards the goblin’s unoccupied and injured leg to try and help the lizard in felling it. She was only assuming what Rain wanted to do to the boss enemy, but then again, she had the inkling that her allies’ attack wasn’t a particularly coordinated thing, what with everyone just trying to do something that could work – but could also back-fire rather spectacularly. Yet, the only other option besides biting into their opponent’s undamaged leg as she was attempting to do right now was digging a hole and hiding – and doing the latter certainly wouldn’t help.
