Keeping an RP alive is as much the players' responsibility as it is the GM's.

The most important period in an RP's life is when the responses start to slow after the initial honeymoon phase. This is THE deciding time for whether or not an RP dies.

Kath and Cam post coming sometime this week.
For those who aren't on the discord yet, here are some answers to questions that @RabidPorcupine answered.

"What kind of countries do we have right now?"

Porc: Basically, it takes place in your standard large fantasy continent. There are two big empires taking up a large chunk of the east coast, Entei Bahara to the south, with a lot of desert land, and Xin Lu, which is fantasy china. The northern area of Xin Lu and a little ways above is called Hiyuki, lotsa taiga's and tundra's and stuff, and the homeland of the Oni. To the west of the two empires, towards the middle of the continent, there is essentially a fragmented mess of smaller nations, where you can always expect at least a few of them to be at war or trying to ally with each other. These are called the Middle Kingdoms, and because there are so many of them, you can essentially make one up for your character to have come from if you'd like. They're human majority, but you can easily justify other races coming from there. There are also other desert nations to the south of the Middle Kingdoms, which I'll also say is up for grabs. And then west of the Middle Kingdoms is what I'm placing under the temporary name of the Spiritwild, which is essentially untamed, and possibly magically charged wilderness. Rolling plains, great forests, and way more dangerous wildlife. Spirits and the like can slip through into the physical world through it, and the same may be true in the opposite direction. There are still a few colonies scattered throughout the wilds though, because humans are crazy and stupid like that. Most Orc tribes also tend to live in the highlands towards the north of the wilds...and the wilds may or may not be the result of some kind of enormous magical disaster wiping out an ancient empire, who knows?

"How do contracted fae/fairies work?"

Porc: Well, from what I'm thinking, fae and their kind would fall more under the category of Spirits than playable races. That being said, forming contracts with spirits to have them become your familiars isn't especially rare in this world, so you could probably still play as a fairy by giving your character one as a familiar.

"How large are they?"

Porc: The fairies are pretty crazy wacky, and come in all shapes and sizes. You could have one of any size as your familiar.

"Are familiars totally bound by their contracts?"

Porc: Not totally- they have some measure of independence; They can think for themselves and make their own decisions, and they still have all their own emotions and stuff, but once they form the contract, but they feed off mana from the summoner's soul, otherwise they'd fade away in the real world. So it's in their best interests to follow the summoners commands, in case they decide to nullify the contract. Most summoner and familiar pairs tend to have a dynamic closer to a team and partnership than master servant anyway.

"Are there animal gods/greater spirits that live out there?"

Porc: There are. Three of them are even worshiped by the continents largest religion, The Church of the Three Kings. They're Ziz, King of the Sky, Behemoth, King of the Earth, and Leviathan, King of the Sea. There are others too of varying levels, but those are the big three.

"Is there a specific setting that the monsters are going to be from?"

Porc: Not particularly. Just whatever fantasy/mythological world I can think of. With a little bit of badly remembered biology knowledge to make them seem a little more realistic. And at the moment, I'm not entirely settled on what constitutes being considered a monster or not. At the moment, it's kind of vague at just 'a species that poses significant threat to those who encounter it'. Honestly though, if I go with that one, even things like hippos and elephants would be considered monsters in this world.

"...What makes you think I'd ever go back?"

Tobias frowned. It wasn’t the answer he expected. When Rathas said nothing more, he continued.

“Currently, it stands as your only hope of living further. I have very little knowledge of what caused you to leave the Graves family, but I can assure you that the majority of those who ran the family back then have either died or left. Only your grandfather remains, and even he is nearing the end of his life.”

He paced until he was in front of Rathas, though she still couldn’t see him with the blindfold on. “I am Tobias Graves, and while I have very little recollection of you, Miss Rathas, I witnessed your explosive power in battle hours ago. As of right now, you are the most powerful Graves family member. Nobody would dissent your claim to succession. You could opt to remake the family as you see fit, or even decide to hide away and do what you like.”

“I will let you decide your own fate. I expect an answer by the time we return to Pachelian shores. That gives you… four hours, I believe.”
Tobias returned to the entrance to the room and prepared to leave.

From her “foraging,” Eska found:
  • About 2000n and 20c
  • A couple maps of Croania, one of House Pachel, one of House Croan, one of House Nols
  • An absurd amount of smoked meats and bread
  • 12 constable’s clubs
  • 7 crossbows
  • Assorted trade goods

From Coln, Eska learned that:
  • She is in the southwest of House Pachel
  • The merchants they sold Jiko to are named the “Featherine Guild”
  • Their plans were to travel to Port Roc, the capital of House Nols
  • The Featherine Guild planned to follow a river all the way to its mouth, the South Sea, where Port Roc stands
  • The journey would take about 2 weeks by slow-moving wagon

aren't we supposed to use this for ooc discussion tho

"ÂżVas a estar bien?"

"Mama, se preocupa demasiado. Todo irá bien."

"Mmh. Diviértete."

James snatched his briefcase and flew out the front door of 219 Wade Street. He had a bike, sure, but the school was only a 20 minute walk away. He liked to walk. It gave him time to think. James considered himself quite good at thinking, but by no means was he an expert. Anyone who was a master at thinking went and lived on high-up mountains in China or Tibet or some other equally distant Asian country.

Harbour Academy for Gifted Adolescents and Youths, huh? He thought.

HAGAY was the most prestigious school in a town of prestigious people. Cape Cove was the home of a rapidly growing medicinal market, and where there was medicine, there was money. Not only were there doctors and high-paying patients, but also everything else a spanky-wanky new hospital town needed to sustain itself. Hotels, restaurants, playplaces like the cinema or that new bowling alley on 3rd Avenue. Cape Cove needed nurses, janitors, receptionists, accountants, people to fill the many jobs and duties in town.

Lawyers, too.

Well, soon there would be a new occupation Cape Cove could claim possesion of- mystery writer extraordinaire- but only if he could get his shit together and write something good for once.

James passed by some other teenagers walking in directions antithetical to his. Students of the other schools in town, no doubt. HAGAY only enrolled a hundred students spread over multiple years- around 15 or so per grade.

He stopped at the school gate. What a grey place! The architecture was incredible, but the color design was so odd- almost as if the architect was colorblind. It blended in so well with the grey Virginia weather that he had almost missed the damn thing!

"No sense losing my nerve now, ah?" James said to nobody in particular, which was good, for no other students were loitering at the entrace to hear him. He checked his watch, a gift from his late paternal grandfather. He was somewhat early.

"Might as well head to the classroom."

He showed his student ID to the guard at the gate and stepped inside. The courtyard leading up to the school was a good deal prettier than the entrance- soon the fall colors would come into a beautiful symphony of reds and oranges. James snapped a quick picture with his phone- the first of what he hoped would be many happy photos of the school year.

The halls were also mostly empty, save for an adult or two that rushed by James without a word. Last-minute preparations, no doubt. James could relate. He often procrastinated important essays until the night before the due date, a habit would have to work on if he wanted to succeed in the coming year.

As he entered the classroom, James noticed one other student- a blonde girl- already there, speaking quietly with a bespectacled man who he recognized as Mr Spelwel, his teacher. They turned as he entered.

"Ah, James, how good to meet you in person! I've heard a lot about you, and I'm excited to see how you perform this year!" Mr Spelwel stuck out his hand.

James shook it. "Likewise. I'll be in your care. I hope that-"

The screech of the morning bell interrupted James.

Mr Spelwel laughed. "That's alright. We can have a proper introduction once everyone comes in. I'm sure everyone will welcome you just fine. Here they come now!"

HAGAY's class of 2020 entered Room 201 like a flock of swans. Disorganized, wacky swans, but swans nonetheless. Each student carried themselves in a way that emphasized how they deserved to be in one of the top secondary institutions in the country. Several of them gave James looks that reminded him of the look a cat gives a mouse before eating it. He swallowed. Did cats play with their food before eating it? Did cats eat the mice at all? Or was that something that the portrayal from-

Mr Spelwel gave James a hearty slap on the back, nearly sending him sprawling. The thin teacher's frame certainly belied his arm strength.

"Right, why don't you introduce yourselves? Give us your name and... a fact about yourself! You know, icebreakers. Then we'll go around the class and everyone else can do them."

The blond girl was apparently vegetarian. He would have to remember that.

It was his turn now. Spelwel pushed his hand down on James's shoulder.

Easy now. Good first impression. These people have known each other for ages now, but that doesn't matter. You're not an outsider, you're just a couple years late to the party. That's like, not that much of a person's life, right? 1/40th the total lifetime of an average person, maybe?

“Ah, hey everyone! I’m James León. I like mystery and crime novels and writing!” He smiled and clapped his hands together. “I look forward to the coming year with you all!”
The Mystery Brain

Name: James LeĂłn (LeĂłn Rivers)

Appearance: 5'9, right about average build- not particularly athletic. Always-messy dark hair. Wears flannels over t-shirts and jeans most of the time. Always smiling.

Personality: Laid-back most of the time, gets extremely worked up and passionate about writing and mysteries. Hides anxiety about his writing by constantly using excuses. He’s confident about everything else, though, and always takes the initiative.

Backstory: While James’s closest relatives have nothing to do with crime, the León family certainly has its roots in the drug cartels of Mexico. Thankfully, James grew up under the perfect influence of his parents, María and Juan León. The two lovers, determined to leave the family history behind, abandoned the high-stakes life of their ancestors and moved to the United States. They... may have taken some money with them, though. The two worked as lawyers and continued saving, eventually having James.

James Juan LeĂłn was born on November 2nd, 2003. His parents raised him like any other couple: with lots of love and high expectations. But, James had other ideas. He decided (in secret!) to write his own crime and mystery novels, enchanted by the stories his grandmother would tell him over the phone. James took on the pen name of LeĂłn Rivers and wrote a fiery hit novel Dawn Enchanter, a mystery novel based on the past escapades of the LeĂłn family. The out-of-nowhere success of a previously-unknown author dazzled the mystery fiction community. They eagerly called for more LeĂłn Rivers, more of the exciting tension and complex mindgames.

James... couldn’t deliver. He wrote two more books, but both failed spectacularly. “Not enough soul,” “too cliché,” “pandering garbage," the critics said. His mechanics were there. His heart was not.

Eventually, his family moved to Cape Cove after his parents were offered jobs as legal consultants. James looked around for the best school to help him improve his skills. He contacted HAGAY, revealed his identity, arranged a payment method, and took the test. He scored well enough- fantastic on literature, English, and history, but only passable in the sciences. It was enough. He was in- unbeknownst to his parents.
