Kinda. But there can be more than one murderer, there are different types of evil characters, and other stiff like that. Alson non-murderer roles can be key too.

There's an in-game chat and a party system. Plus, you and I can talk offline as well, if need be.

Is there an ai mode too or is it required to have a bunch of players? I've only seen a bunch of players.

Only time there are AIs is in the tutorial. And even then, it's not really "AIs", it's just a scripted series of events.
