INTRODUCTION


The vast lands of Illendriel are full of wonder; sights and experiences that no single being could ever hope to see in multiple lifetimes. It's a medieval fantasy world of vast empires, quiet villages, savage wastelands, and mighty dragons. A world of almost infinite possibilities. Inspired by the likes of dungeons and dragons, final fantasy, lord of the rings, and others of the genre where brave heroes combat vile monsters, this will hopefully have a little bit of something that everyone can enjoy!

OVERVIEW


This roleplay will actually be a series of adventures rather than a single large one, each one controlled by a game master voted on by us, given that there's more than one volunteer for such a position at the time. The stories will mostly take place within the same canon, i.e. what happens in one of our adventures is taken as fact to have happened within the same lore that the other adventures are also a part of. However, they don't all have to, just in case something happens within a story that we don't like or wish to explore a "what if" scenario that would mess up the story if played in the main canon, but would be a blast to do otherwise, such as what if Illendriel is hit by a zombie apocalypse that threatens it's extinction.

This roleplay is, in it's heart, a massive sand box for us to play around with and all contribute to, not simply following my every command as you're all forced to stick to a linear story without any input of your own or traveling off the beaten path. As such this will be at it's greatest once all of our ideas are combining in new and exciting ways. There will not be a large amount of backstory to begin with because of this, as the group might decide to focus our attention towards another direction than the stuff I had planned.

Let's say an old man shows up to give exposition to everyone at the start of a story. People can make the choices for their own character, which could include beating up the man and stealing his wallet, if such a character was accepted by the game master to begin with and able to pull off this fowl dead. Yes; as long as a character's actions are realistic for what they could accomplish, they can do almost anything that's not breaking guild rules. This doesn't mean that people who are a problem for the roleplay will be left to have free reign on making our lives miserable, as the game master or other characters can present challenges for them that they cannot overcome in order to stop them. That being said, do whatever you want as long as you don't spoil the experience for everyone and we should be okay.

This roleplay will start out with relatively short experiences to weed out potential trolls (internet ones, not the race) and allow everyone to get a feel on how this all works before we get into the real meat of this roleplay.

Although I say inspired by certain games/media that use stats and dice rolling, that is not the case here. No stats are used, as things are done based on common sense. If you have a buff dude try to break down a door, we know he'll have an easier time kicking it down than my string bean looking mage. It's up to the game master to decide if they wish to use dice or not. They may do so if they think, "hmm...this has a chance it could work and a chance it couldn't, so I'll roll a dice based on the probability I think it would have". They could also do so simply to add more unpredictability, which could work best for silly stories where you have to roll for simple actions such as drawing a sword, causing them to fling the sword out and have it stick into an ally's back if they roll a 1! However, in general, I don't imagine dice rolls being used much at all.

SETTING


Picture a fantasy world of your choosing and someplace like that likely exists somewhere within Illendriel as long as you stick to certain guidelines and they don't invalidate aspects about other places (and if they do, say it's from another canon if we allow that setting to be used). Some places developed steam punk technology but there's no one advanced enough to create anything better than single firing guns that take a long time to load, like old time muskets. Fantasy flying vehicles may exist but obviously no jet planes. Technology to develop steel exists. Middle Age stuff is where you can picture things generally at, with fantasy and steam punk elements pushing certain inventions, but be careful that it doesn't feel out of place or too advanced for a normal fantasy setting.

Magic exists with many possible effects, and to use it one must often say incantations or fulfill other ways of bringing it into fruition such as mixing magical ingredients. Different styles of magic have their own ways of using it that branched off from each other long ago. However, all are tied in some way to essence; their energy or the energy found in special ingredients as mentioned previously. Using magic is draining, so between that and familiarity/knowledge of magic, these are the two main things preventing it from becoming too powerful. A spell that can blow up the world could exist, but it would require so much enemy that the caster would die from the strain long before they managed to unleash such power. Time stopping falls into this same category, or other all too powerful magical types. The most powerful of magics can generally only destroy a single town.

Mythology is diverse. Belief in gods comes down to "what counts as a god" a lot of the time. Multiple gods exist, depending on definitions. Many religions have at least a grain of truth to them. No god is all powerful, and most are actually weak compared to how people would normally view gods, able to be killed by mere mortals. Gods are beings who existed since the dawn of creation, which is the main thing that they all have in common.

The geography of Illendriel is vast, from icy tundras to volcanic planes. Three great continents exist called "Leum", "Tallo", and "Vellor", as well as many smaller land masses. Vellor is the most war torn, Leum is thought to be the most peaceful, and Tallo is the middle grounds. However, all are prone to monster attacks from time to time.

The world is inhabited by many races and monsters. They can be heavily inspired by things from other things as well as having some that are completely unique to this roleplay are take a unique spin on old ideas. Humans, of course, exist in plentiful amounts, but with a healthy mix of other races thrown in where they are not out of place in most areas. Beast folk are also common, which are humans with animal characteristics such as cat ears.

RULES


1. Forum roles apply. I say your character has lots of free will here, but don't have them do them something that would cause a ban hammer to fall upon us.

2. You may not control other character's actions in any way unless that's specifically mentioned as a power of a character, such as puppetry or obvious stuff such as grappling their limbs in certain ways. You must get permission by the player to do controlling in other ways. Killing/harming other characters is allowed, but keep in mind that you may be ganged up upon by other players and the gm if you do so without their will. You can say, "I suddenly swing my sword to decapitate my former comrade's head", but the gm may cause an NPC to swoop in and stop you or something.

3. Don't leave people waiting on an IC post for more than a week without good reason. Doing so will invalidate your right to rule #2, allowing us to control your character as desired to move things along. If you're still missing by the next time your deadline comes around then you will likely be kicked out or killed (in character, not in person, as that would be a little excessive). We don't have to punish people in this way, but it's still an option.

4. Don't double post.

5. Wait until everyone else involved with your character has had a chance to post before posting again as to not leave someone in your group behind without a chance to contribute.

6. Post a good paragraph per IC post. Some smaller posts are allowed but don't make a habit out of it. We want to see some effort. Bigger posts are better than smaller if you must go overboard one way or the other.

7. You may post multiple characters on here, but don't swamp us with them.

8. You don't need an actual character, but instead just help with the lore/background/NPCs if you desire.

9. You don't have to join every story within this roleplay.

10. Any of you can organize a second (or even more) story taking place in this setting at the same time a main one is going on, which should be handy if there are a lot of people not currently interested in the main story.

11. Characters accepted by me here doesn't me that they can automatically join all adventures taking place under this roleplay's banner. It just means that they fit into the lore of this world and are not some ak-47 duel wielding fairy (which could be pretty epic, now that I think about it).

12. These are just standard rules. A game master can add on or change rules as they feel the need to do so, and I can also add on rules if I come up with them and feel they are mandatory.

13. I can overrule the game master, but will use this power only with support from most of the people involved.

14. Have fun and don't spoil things for the rest of us!

For the sheet, don't bother posting the stuff I have in parenthesis in your final sheet, which is just there to explain the stuff in the sheet.

Adventure Name - The Inn and the Dragon
Length - Short
Tone - Middle ground, allowing for some humor but mostly serious
Short Description - A place known as the Adventurer's Inn is found in a clearing of a fanciful forest not a part of any kingdom. A group of adventurers have all made their way here for whatever reason, unknowingly having to join a party together as an unexpected guest arrives. He's heavily wounded, claiming to have done damage of his own onto a deadly beast that's making it's way to the inn as he speaks. Do we have what it takes to band together to fight a dragon, albeit a wounded one unable to fly? Or should we allow the inn to be destroyed and turn tail to come up with a new plan?
Character Stipulations - None. Characters may be ones we'd like to bring for additional adventures as they form a party together.

Age - 25
Gender - Male
Race - Human
Personality - Kodor is a noble savage with a fiery temper and a penchant for extreme violence. In battle, he is liable to be possessed by an extreme bloodlust, entering a berserker state.
Despite this, he has a primitive sense of community. To him, the protection of his tribe is more important than anything else. The tribe protects each other and helps each other, and in the outlands, this is essential for living another day.
He's gone from living as a hunter-gatherer to being in places where food and drink are bountiful. As such he's fond of food, drink, and other simple pleasures, though he also derives a form of joy from violence.
Kodor, given his life, also believes that might makes right.
Appearance -


Abilities - Kodor is second to none in terms of strength and constitution, raised in the harshest climates and fighting dangerous monsters. Likewise, he's skilled with melee weapons, overwhelming enemies with sheer strength.
Moreover, he's fit to bouts of berserker rage. When he enters such a state, he grows frighteningly violent, able to ignore pain, fear, and fatigue until he bleeds out or the enemy is destroyed. Even allies are recommended to stand back until he calms down.
Equipment - A heavy sword and a greataxe, both slung across his back.

Backstory - Kodor hails from the farthest reaches of society, wherein dangerous beasts and the harshest climates make survival an everyday concern. There, Kodor and his clan grew as savages, living off the land and eating the monsters that sought to destroy them.
Kodor's role in the old village was as a hunter. He, especially, would venture from the safety of the huts and fires and spend long periods tracking dangerous beasts in the snow. This was necessary. It provided meat and bone and fur. Kodor spent many years doing this. However, one year, he went out during an especially harsh blizzard. During this time, he was beset by many hungry bears. For him, this meant much meat. When he returned, however, the village was abandoned, the huts empty. The tundra was vast, and if they weren't dead, it was likely Kodor would never see them again.

Without a clan, he began to wander.
He left the tundra and wandered the deserts. There, he killed.
He left the desert and wandered the plains. There, he killed.
He left the plains and wandered the jungles. There, he killed.

But no matter where he wandered or who he killed, he never found his village. This brings him to today. He now lives his life only as a sellsword, mercenary, and treasure hunter.

I hope this is okay, I did my best:

Name - Welt
Age - Unknown, died sometime in his adult years
Gender - Male
Race - Human (undead)
Personality - Welt is now mostly a stoic persona. He kept most of his traditionalist traits when he died, but the fact that he's no longer welcome among the living has left its mark even on his brutal, warrior spirit. He's persistent, always has his goal on his mind, and has dedicated his 'life' to accomplishing what he was tasked with when his heart stopped beating. He is troubled by his personal demons from the past which are far more hideous than his own appearance; but he is reluctant to talk to about his old self, and prefers to keep it dead. Welt is a loyal 'person', whose principles are based on the warrior code.
Appearance -



He covers himself with a tattered black cloak all the time, though. This is what he looks underneath the cloak.

Abilities - Cannot die like a regular person. It takes a powerful spell to kill him, as he was cursed by a sorceress ages ago. Mere physical damage cannot break his bones either. He is also a veteran of many raids and battles that he carried out with his comrades when he was alive, so he is not bad with axes, shields, and swords. His undead nature makes him immune to all weather conditions, he can freely exist underwater and he requires no food nor water. However, he cannot expose himself to the sunlight or his bones with wither, and his soul will forever be banned from entering the halls of his ancestors.

Equipment - Ax, two handed sword, cloak, a dead horse.

Backstory - Not much is known save that he was a mighty warrior of his tribe and that he had a family long ago.
What is most important for his character is that one day he organised a bloody massacre of the chieftian's entire family as a revenge in order to gain power and the spoils of war he believed were rightfully his, but the oldest daughter of the family cursed him before dying, leaving him undead for all eternity, until he manages to find a way to redeem himself. He's been searching for the way ever since.

We do a vote based on what adventure sheet posted here most catches our eye for our next story.

All the character sheets are accepted. For Welt's bones holding up to mere physical attacks, I'm sure that strong attacks could break him, right? If all the enemy could do is immobilize him or use powerful magic he'd be overpowered for a lot of lower level stories, as he could tank everything there. Of course like I said earlier, he's still acceptable so could find a home in higher level stories given only powerful attacks can break him. Or participate in stories where we can still fail and have dangerous threats even with him there.

Oh, what I meant is that he can't be simply broken like any old bone you may find. He's got the physical resilience of a warrior, not a frail skeleton, if that makes sense. I am pretty sure Kodor could obliterate him if he isn't careful. :-)

And as for the magic killing him, I had something like this on my mind: If you crush him physically, let's say snap his spine or decapitate him -- or anything of the sort, really -- he remains alive, just useless and pretty much dead in the sense that he can no longer continue the RP, but his soul is still trapped in his broken skeleton and is doomed to remain like that forever. He would remain alive in that, should I say poetic sense, which doesn't make him invincible or overpowered. A powerful spell can destroy him in both senses -- obliterate his body and cast out his soul from it, killing him for good.

I'm gonna throw out a suggestion in case you want to use it; it's how I like to do sentient zombies but it'll work better if you wanna make him fleshy instead of a skeleton.
Typically undead can't feel pain, which is actually a huge advantage in combat. It's why when Kodor goes berserk, that's one of his boons; he just ignores pain and fatigue and injuries and fights until he can't even move. As an undead, you're probably also resistant or immune to disease, poison, and hunger.

Another thing you could do instead of mere durability is, not regeneration exactly, but something similar. Wolverine style regeneration is hard to keep track of without a system, and also relatively easy to abuse to where you inevitably have a guy who can get stabbed in the chest and say "lol i heal", thus negating any semblance of danger.
What you could do is have him get hacked to pieces, but then sew his body back together later. This gives him a certain form of regeneration that gives him a very unique advantage over a living warrior, but is still limited in that you don't have time to pull out a needle and cord during a fight.
Limbs can also be mangled to the point of uselessness, like if his arm got crushed, burned to ash, or chewed up by a large beast. So what do you do? Go find a fresh corpse, lop off his arm, and stick it on your stump.

And on top of this, you still have ways of being disabled or killed. If all your limbs are disabled or your head gets chopped off, then you'd be helpless until someone patches you up. And you can still have a method to get perma-killed, which with undead is typically destroying the head or heart.

I've been mulling this sort of thing in my head for a while, but I always forget to play a ghoul when I have the chance.

Also ImportantNobody, I'm probably gonna throw out some lore ideas in a short while, specifically about the actual culture and tech, and probably a bit on magic. That way the setting is a bit more cohesive and clear, but we can still leave room for adventuring. I'll make a post about that in a short while.

Name - Enior Errigan

Gender - M
Race - Elf
Personality - Enior speaks to a room of many people and they all cheer his name. He joins in song, merriment, entertainment, and all other hospitalities that life might have to offer at any given time. Though his demeanor is friendly, the elf would likely reevaluate his morals for a high enough sum of gold. Enior is a thief and a rogue who treads in the shadow, his personality in combat being unheard and of a single swing. Though he'd rather avoid combat entirely, Enior has been known to hold his ground against more than one opponent. In most cases, Enior utilizes charm and wit to woo an opposing party over, or gain favors and trinkets he should not.
Appearance -


He wears a transparent, thin veil as a sort of mask. It is only effective at night or in dim lightning.
Abilities - Lockpicking, pickpocketing, knife-throwing, stealth, superb climbing and speed, trap disarming, silver tongue
Equipment - Thieves' tools, Climbing kit, leather armor, throwing knives, two iron daggers, and smoke bombs

Backstory - Raised in the slums of a bustling city, Enior was quick to learn harsh living and the brutality of famine. Stealing his way to survive, Enior became rather good at becoming unnoticed about the hundredth time he was beaten by the local vendors. He could steal goods, foods, even coin from one's pocket without being noticed. On occasion, he's even been known to slip a weapon from a guard or two, or so he claims. At a younger age than most he became a sellsword. He favored the dagger above all other weapons, allowing him to strike in close proximity while remaining light on his feet. Now, though, he seeks knowledge of a great treasure; the life of a sellsword pays well but not enough. He dreams of bathing in the gold of nobles, gold he never attained as a child in the gutter.

Yes, as I've said in my sheet, he can live with no food and water and is immune to weather effects and so on. He may not feel pain, but he knows that it doesn't make him invulnerable, so I won't go into any berserk rages and insane killing sprees that go against reason. Really, him being a ghoul is more of an aesthetic choice than a choice of mechanics, even though there are some of them incorporated into his character.

That is indeed an interesting idea. I'll leave him as he is for now, since it's more interesting to play with some sort of handicap. Perhaps change him in the following adventure; or maybe even create a whole new character.
