Dystopian, supernatural, grimdark
3-6 players

Welcome to Eden. One of the last few bastions of free society. The autonomous city-state is known for high crime-rates, an oxymoronic peace force, and supernatural occurrences. For the citizens who aren't wealthy enough to buy their way to safety, it's a horrendous place to live. But it's not like anywhere else is any better. Safer than the bandits and flesh-melting heat outside, at least.

The city is corrupt. Corporations act above the law. If one lives in the wards, they can have their choice of living in gangland or terrorized by the peace force. The districts aren't much better. Terror attacks and otherworldly forces pervade Eden. Citizens can do nothing but try to keep the abominable horrors out of their minds. The horrors aren't something that normal people can handle. Not the peace force, not Eden's government, not the gangs.

But that's why Ultralight exists.

To illuminate what lie in the shadows.

I'm working on my CS, although I am having a WAY harder time writing a satisfactory personality and backstory than I originally anticipated. If I can't work out something i'm happy with by the end of the day, I'll post up a few other possibilities and see what the rest of you think would work.

Removed original sheet, as it contained a lot of backstory stuff I've decided to save for actual roleplay.

I'll be working on my CS over tonight, so I may get something posted up tomorrow afternoon, though it could be tomorrow night if I don't fully finish the character.

Perfectly reasonable to ask for me to not use XCOM, I was honestly being a bit lazy with that one.

Ah, misunderstood how exactly the ghost district works. Easy enough to fix.

As for why him; I'll do some rewriting, would you mind if I PM you to discuss the fine details of that?

Admittedly I was stretching a bit with the powers, so I'll drop the going ethereal thing entirely. Not quite sure what I was even thinking, but sometimes I just start writing and can't stop.

That's also probably the cause of the... inconsistent sentence flow. I wasn't terribly thrilled with it either tbh, just got lazy on the second pass of editing after wracking my brain all day just to get anything written to begin with.

As for his clothes; he has made modifications to the armor he has left. Removing insginias and other obviously identifiable marks, basically disguised it as assorted scraps that have been put together piecemeal.

All that said, I'll pop into the document where I've got my master copy and start editing; write up a better description and nix the XCOM picture.

Finished revising
Name: Asche Stauss

Alias: Smoker

Appearance: Asche is a tall, muscular man with noticeably broad shoulders, short cut black hair, and black eyes. He has a strong, square jawline and pointed nose with extensive scarring on the right side of his face; including faint traces of corrupted tissue above his eye, in the form of three thin black streaks.

Some components of his preferred clothing are salvaged from his EDENPOL armor; namely the pauldrons, shoulder pads, and boots. The rest of the outfit consists of olive green cargo pants, a black synthetic leather vest reinforced with scrap metal plates (including a knife holster mounted to the right shoulder), and a dark grey t-shirt. In addition to his clothing, Asche wears thick brown bandages wrapped around his arms at all times to hide his ritual scarring and blackened flesh.

Personality:

Asche Stauss is a complicated man. He retains an outward attitude of cold indifference and rarely expresses himself; but this is simply a mask. In truth he is deeply caring, and assigns more value to the lives of others than to his own, preferring not to bother others with his own troubles if he can avoid it. These troubles have been magnified tenfold since the incident that removed him from EDENPOL; he is perpetually plagued by alien thoughts from a mind that is no longer solely his own, thoughts which pushes him constantly towards the abyss from which it was born.

Spending so much of his life as an EDENPOL operative supporting his family, Asche has developed a strict personal code which can be summed up simply; never leave a man behind, always protect your brothers in arms, and the ones you love are more valuable than your own life. Informed by this philosophy he has isolated himself from his sisters, only further compounding his inner turmoil.

History:
Asche Stauss is notoriously private about his past. The only known details are that he has two sisters and worked with EDENPOL for an extended period of time.

He did not leave EDENPOL by choice. During a raid on a group of suspected terrorists, Asche’s was separated from his team when he fell through a rotted out floor in the run-down building where their targets had set up base. Knocked unconscious by the fall Asche awoke to find himself stripped of most of his armor and strapped down to a stone slab, a cultist standing over him and slicing arcane symbols into his flesh. When he awoke, the cultist panicked, unable to finish as Asche struggled against his restraints and called out to his team.

The incomplete summoning had far different effects than they had planned. In their haste to finish a different rite had been performed, rather than ending his life to call forth a monster, the cult had merged Asche’s physical body with the essence and will of that same beast.

After slipping off the blood-soaked restraint on one arm, he seized the knife which had been used to mutilate his body, using it to kill the cultist who had done the deed just in time for his team to arrive and finish off the others.

Upon seeing what had become of their brother in arms, Asche’s squadmates reached a decision. They would return to EDENPOL with his ID tags and what remained of his armor to report him as KIA and spare him what was likely a far worse fate than simple execution.

In the two years between leaving EDENPOL and his recent recruitment into Ultralight Asche lived as a scavenger, surviving on stolen food and wearing clothes liberated from waste processing centers; never spending a night in the same alley twice as he desperately evaded discovery. He spent that time learning to control his newfound gift and coming to terms with the twisting of his psyche, until a chance encounter with Cider ended in his recruitment as a member of her cell.

As a new recruit Asche has not yet been deployed by Ultralight, though he has prior experience in covert operations from his time with EDENPOL.

Capabilities:
Asche possesses the ability to enter a mysterious dimension, traveling instantly between points in the real world. This dimension -dubbed Shadow Space- exists between the corners of our world, and within it neither time nor distance have meaning. It is an alien realm the geography of which is incomprehensible to any mere mortal, and only as a result of his corrupted mind and body can Asche traverse it. Even still, this carries the risk of further wearing down his humanity.

Equipment:
Modified EDENPOL magnetic combat rifle: the weapon has been stripped down to the minimum of parts, removing the stock and shortening the barrel; while it lacks in accuracy and power compared to a stock model, the weapon is lighter and no longer recognizable as an EDENPOL issued weapon.

Carbon fiber combat knife: A simple serrated combat knife made from next-gen carbon fiber and polymer materials. It is lightweight, razor sharp and nearly as hard as diamond; but with greater resilience.

Athame: A traditional ritual dagger made from common steel, with an ebony handle and silver inlays. Used for mundane purposes such as preparing his own personal meals.

Body armor: Asche retains only the minimum of what once constituted his EDENPOL issued armor; his boots, pauldrons, and shoulder pads, all of which have been stripped of identifying markings and integrated with clothing typical of a scavenger.

Other: Carries a locket containing a picture of two identical teenage girls bearing a strong resemblance to himself, and one of a middle-aged couple whose faces have been scratched out

Alright, I've got a mostly-done sheet here. The last bits will be added in when I'm feeling less wiped from work (which may take a couple days as I work again tomorrow).

I'm thinking of a character that is outside of fate, thus has limited immortality. (No physical needs, can't die permanently, but only heals at normal rate and feels all the pain and misery of injury) I am also thinking of it having a downside of a severe, supernatural allergy to Buddhist relics and items. It would be, after all, outside the karmic cycle. If this power is used, I planned the character to look like a ragged street shaman type:

@Phantomlink959 Looks good. You can move him to CHAR tab.

@Tojin Looks good so far. I like what you're doing with the ROCKETO PAUUUUUUUNCH.

@Lotrix Molick IMMORTALITY WITHOUT REGENERATION, BOLD MOVE. Considering how it takes about two years for a normal person to recover from getting their arm replanted, I'd be fine if you shortened regeneration time a bit. Not so much that you regenerate in fights or don't feel the consequences, but enough so that you aren't a one armed bandit for the entirety of the story (if you get your arm lopped off). Considering how there's tons of ways to effectively kill someone in a state like that, I'm fine with you having effective immortality. You can even have it without that allergy to Buddhism, unless you want to keep it for flavour.

Surprisingly, the biggest problem would be with that outfit. The world isn't really styled like Shadowrun. I would more describe it as similar to Va-11 Hall-A. Wearing such an outfit in public would just be hilariously overt. I'm fine if your character wears it on missions and stuff because it makes him feel good, but he'd still need to dress like a regular person at most times. Street-punk at worst. also that outfit looks like it would take 30 minutes to put on and take off

Well, the theme I'm going for is that he is outside the karmic cycle, thus he has no regeneration, but should he be "killed", he will reform again later. (Much like a lich) The Buddhist allergy is flavor that I really liked due to being outside of fate and the karmic cycle. So, should he take injuries that wouldn't kill him but maimed him significantly, he would have to decide whether to stay alive longer or kill himself and risk missing something. It would also open the door to points where he would have to ask a teammate to euthanize him. (To be fair, the he may end up a she if the art fits better)

My other three arts, that may fit better, would be these:

All 3 are equally viable in my opinion as far as me using them. It just takes whether they fit.

@Lotrix Molick The images are fine.

Having lich-like immortality without a phylactery is something that I'm not exactly okay with. In a roleplaying setting, it would be fine for an NPC or villain because they can be die, then come back in a while. For a player character, there are two results: if you die, you either come back fast enough for it to not matter (thereby removing tension and any stakes) or come back too slow (resulting in being unable to post for extended periods of time). Even then, lich-like regeneration only works because of phylacteries. An actual object that must be protected at all times.

Basically, the power is either strong enough to invalidate any trial, or it's so weak that it actually hurts you in a meta way (being unable to post).

Minor nitpick, but being outside of the karmic cycle basically means to not be in the endless rebirths. Basically reaching moksa. It would be more apt to say that he's permanently frozen in the cycle - unable to be reborn, and stuck to the mortal coil.

Why not just go all-in and have them be effectively a lich, if not be one outright?

Like you said, the phylactery/soul-jar is the main weakness. No matter how many times you kill them they keep coming back, but if you destroy the artifact they're dead and gone.

Well a full blown lich is way more obvious due to looks. I could think of another power associated with be wrenched from the tapestry of fate. Thats the idea that really interests me is to be outside of fate.

Any ideas?

Well, sort of depends. If you're looking for a traditional view of fate, then someone who can't be affected by fortune can't really work in an RP because nothing is preordained without severe railroading.

If you have a more ethereal view of fate, then you can go with an immortal outsider. A long lived sage who's sole ability is to not die + slow regeneration. Therefore, you'd be out of the fate of humans. Then you could play with lost memories because of all of the deaths, or be a living historic tour guide.

If you want to go pure bare bones, there's always the trait of an "against-the-odds" fighter. Bland, vanilla.

It's kind of rough because the concept of being stuck inside of fate has a lot more paths than stuck outside.

If you overthink it railroading itself could be considered to BE fate in roleplay terms, meaning an argument could be made for the character not to be affected.

Part of why I wanted outside fate rather than fatebound. It is the more interesting road since it is less used. (The only time I've ever really encountered it as a core concept was in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, which I wish took off as a game series since it was really fun)

Anyway, the undying sage sounds like a good idea. By slow regen, what do you mean? Is it like D&D troll regen where they can reattach limbs and heal fast enough not to keel over but not fast enough to ignore the dangers of damage?

I suppose it would be akin to a D&D troll. What I was thinking was more quick "weak" regeneration and slow "strong" regeneration. Meaning that if an arm gets lopped off, you can grab it, hold it to the stump, and about 15 seconds later, it's reattached. However, the reattachment is weak at first. It could easily be knocked off again, and you wouldn't regain full strength of the arm until a day or two later.

Since it's an undying sage, they could be freely shot in the head, black out for a half an hour, then come back. The regen would probably be slower if they got their head lopped into two bits, but you could always improve the speed by just shoving as much viscera as you could back into the skull. If they get utterly destroyed, shredded into goo, then spread across the world, regeneration would probably take a few years.

This means that the undying character is unable to personally feel the stakes, but everything they know and love can still be lost. As compared to a lich-lite, they can still use their regeneration in combat without having to die and miss out on a few posts because they have to die to regenerate. Plus they're still affected by things like entrapment, rather than being able to bite off your own tongue and appear nearby, away from harm.
