Aedre Charbonnet

— Mesalon City Gym —

Aedre listened to Amber silently and with more resignation than she’d like to admit. Again, the other researcher pointed out her weakness, encouraging her to be less hard on herself, but how could she? If she failed even when she pushed herself, how could she succeed when she didn’t?

When Amber brought up the other attacks, though, Aedre held her breath. So this wasn’t irreparable—she still had a chance to make it right, however small that chance might seem. She had a chance to find the package, a chance to right her mistake, a chance to set herself back on the right course and not arrive home and break her mentors’ trust.

“Yeah, thanks so much Lacey, Dee.” The sash reaching towards her caught her eye only when she had Decus’ Pokeball in hand, and she stopped, watching as Decus coiled it around her leg. The nondescript texture of texture of the cloth distracted her for a moment, but then she registered a slight tugging sensation—a tightness—but not from Decus’ grasp, which was featherlight. Rather, the feeling seemed to come from under the skin, and the closest sensation she could relate it to was that of a mental nudge from a psychic-type.

“Dee?” Aedre stared at Decus, trying to read him. All information about Honedge said that their sashes drained life energy, yet Aedre felt perfectly fine, so what was he doing? Was he just… comforting her?

“Oh,” Aedre breathed, her hand dropping. “Thanks, Dee.”
Aedre touched the Honedge’s hilt, then turned to Amber. “Yeah, let’s go.”

The police showed up, which was to be expected after Amber had contacted them. Aedre was made to answer questions, as well as her friends, who fared significantly less questioning due to their not being there. Yes, a woman. Dark hair, late twenties or early thirties. A Sneasel, normal-sized and -colored. Around a third of the way from the gym to the Pokemart, where—yes—where she got the package. And yes, she was fairly sure it contained a Pokeball, because Occam’s Razor: When you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras. Okay, so she wasn’t completely sure, because no she didn’t open the box, but she wasn’t about to be the person calling a zebra in this situation.

And so the questioning went, needling facts from a fuzzy narrative that got clearer as Aedre recounted more—dangerous, since the mind tended to fill in gaps and believe itself, but everything made sense with the gaps filled. The police would get back to her with more information like if this female thief and Sneasel duo had been seen before, and soon after relaying some messages that were clearly rehearsed to be reassuring, they were off.

“Well, hope they find something,” Aedre said with a forced smile as she returned to her friends. She’d just filed one of thousands, maybe millions, of stolen item cases, and she didn’t even know what she’d lost.

Amber Pine

Mesalon Pokecentre -> Mesalon Gym

@Dusksong

Watching the policewoman leave, Amber could only hope the investigation would yield results. "Yeah, let's hope for the best," she replied to Aedre. "If there's a good chance this is a Pokemon, they'll want to give this their all." If Ty was right about the low crime rate around here, the police wouldn't be swamped with cases, but still, this could be connected to a group that evaded the authorities.

Tacita hopped onto Aedre's shoulder, nuzzling her as if to say it wasn't her fault, then flitted back to her trainer, tucking herself into one of Amber's spacious trouser pockets. Amber petted the little bird, then looked back at Aedre.

"Well, I'd better inform the gym leaders," she announced. "Looking into things like this is part of their duty here. See you everyone, and let's get a good night's sleep." She shivered as she headed towards the gym, partly from the evening chill creeping through the air, partly from the thought of a theft happening in such a quiet little town. For her own protection, she brought out Kyra, who trotted along at her feet. While the puppy brought comfort, something else nagged at Amber's mind - the message she'd have to reply to. If this kind of thing kept happening, how on earth was she supposed to explain it?

At her hurried pace, it didn't take long to reach the gym. Once she'd relayed the story to Lan and Rachel, she took a detour. There was one more person to speak to - assuming said person was still here, and actually wanted to speak.

Footsteps clacked, and the figure Amber was looking for appeared from around a corner, all professional poise. Sharp eyes, as if also searching, met hers.

"There you are." Vivianne spoke as she might to a work colleague. "I have to say, I'm afraid I can't stay much longer. So... I was just about to head out and find you. To let you know."

That hint of warmth the cool tone gave way to stirred mixed feelings through Amber, bittersweet memories from long ago. "It's ok. I understand," she replied, feet curling inwards. "It was... nice while it lasted." She cringed at the unintentional double meaning.

The other researcher nodded, her face an impassive mask. Several seconds of silence passed by before she gave her simple answer. "It was." As she moved towards the door, she turned her head. For a moment, a trace of the sparkle Amber knew returned to Vivianne's eyes. "Well... I wish you luck." She lingered by the exit, then turned and strode out, her pace brisk as if to put the past behind her for good.

Amber found it difficult to speak through the lump forming in her throat. "Thanks." As she stood staring at the door, she felt something warm and fluffy rub around her ankles, followed by the sharp scratch of stones. She winced, but smiled anyway as she crouched to pet Kyra.

"Meeting her here... That was certainly unexpected," she murmured. "Like a lot of things."

It was with heavier steps that she headed back to the Pokemon centre, towards the room she'd booked, where she could reply to the message and settle into bed. What a day. At least it was near its end, a new one about to start... although who knew what that would bring?

...
Mesalon Pokecentre

Morning sunlight streamed through the cafeteria window, as if it promised better things. If only she could do the same, Amber thought as she hunched over her laptop, answering the endless questions in Coral's replies.

It's all fine now, she typed. Mesalon's pretty peaceful, please tell Mom and Dad they don't have to worry. For obvious reasons, she decided not to mention what had happened to Aedre, or the attack by the frenzied bats. To further lighten the mood, she attached some photos of her Pokemon. Imagining her sister's face upon seeing the picture of Larimar dozing with her claws tucked in cheered her a little.

Once she'd clicked "send", she reached down, petting the smooth shells of Chalcedony and Larimar as they scooped snacks from a bowl with their claws. Kyra, having quickly gobbled down her meal, wagged her tail and jumped around after Aeshna and Tacita. "Well, now I can keep watch over you," she said to the green Pokeball she took from her belt, "it's your turn for breakfast." She pressed the button, then hurriedly sprinkled quartz shards in front of the Ghost type that appeared. "Eat up! But only the ones you're given."

Almandine's crystalline eyes gleamed at the sight of the meal. She instantly tucked in, champing down the gems with loud crunches. Amber smiled as she watched, although she kept her finger on the Dusk Ball button, ready to return the Sableye at a moment's notice if she caused trouble. "Wow, just how many of those do you eat in one sitting?" she chuckled. "That'll be something to study. Good thing Rachel let us keep those mining kits, looks like I'll need one more than ever."

The travelling Rock type gym leader was probably on her way right now, but hopefully she'd figure out at least a little about yesterday's happenings.

Sophia Danvers

Out and about -> Mesalon Pokecentre

Sophia, meanwhile, had woken bright and early. Well, to tell the truth she didn't feel one hundred per cent awake, not after yesterday's overexertion. It didn't really matter, though, as long as she could seem energised enough to draw the attention of passers-by. It was only a small gathering, but a gathering nonetheless.

"Now presenting, Sophia the Spectacular!" She gestured towards herself, then swept her hand in a wide, theatrical arc. The intricate origami Xatu she'd made flew around her, doing a flip before landing. As surprised stares turned to applause, she grinned. Paper wouldn't cause too much strain, and being praised rather than patronised was a welcome change.

Of course, some people refused to be impressed, rolling their eyes at fluttering Swoobats and dancing Grumpigs, dismissing her psychic tricks as some kind of stage illusion. A few others told her to tone down the high-and-mighty attitude. Sophia tried to pay them no notice. If they didn't want to recognise awesome, that was their problem.

One comment, however, she couldn't ignore.

"Not bad," said a bored-looking guy, "though you should see the Psychic type gym leader who visits town now and again. Now there's someone who could teach you a thing or two."

Sophia stood speechless as the man trudged along his way. Shame washed away all satisfaction. Someone had just HAD to remind her she couldn't compare to Ray. She resumed the show with some half-hearted tricks, but loss of enthusiasm won out.

"Well, I bet you wish you could watch me all day, but I'd better get going," she announced, her voice wavering despite the forced confidence. "You've been almost as great an audience as I am a performer!" She gave an exaggerated stage bow, only to stumble, planting her foot straight into a piece of chewing gum. Face reddening, she avoided eye contact with anyone as she scraped her shoe clean, then gathered up the paper Pokemon and the few coins she'd earned. Without a further word, she hurried back to the Pokemon centre.

Scowling, she took a seat in the corner, arms folded. Some day she'd be good enough. And today, she'd prove it with something other than a street performance. A gym rematch. Not that the thought of facing the expert who'd humiliated her two days ago comforted her any.

Aedre Charbonnet

— Mesalon City Gym —

Aedre woke up to her alarm, and she stretched before sitting up, yawning. Murmuring a ‘morning’ to her Pokemon, she got ready for the day, reading through her messages and emails as she did so. Obviously, she’d gotten no word back from the police yet. It was too early for that. From her lab back home she got reassurance and encouragement, which she’d expected. Her mentors were too nice for their own good, though they admitted that they were unable to disclose more information about the package at this time. They would get back to her as soon as they could, they said.

“Right.” Aedre sighed, picking up her bag. “Breakfast?”

The cafeteria was sparsely populated when Aedre arrived, though she picked out Amber among the tables, who looked engrossed in her laptop. Herding her Pokemon towards the food, Aedre filled a tray with bowls before joining Amber at her table.

“Good morning!” Aedre said with a smile as she slid the bowls of Pokeblocks out for her Pokemon. “The food here looks great.”

Rubbing Thea’s shell with a hand, Aedre paused to watch her Pokemon dig in—or, rather, just Thea, since she was the only one enthusiastically inhaling her meal. Little ate in the carefully peckish way he did, tossing pieces into the air and swallowing them after he gave them a thorough examination with his beak, and Decus seemed more interested in cutting up his Pokeblocks than eating them, which made Aedre wonder if he even ate.

“I see Almandine’s loving her meal,” Aedre noted, seeing the Sableye crunching down her meal with a wide grin. Then, remembering her Water Stone, she retrieved it, giving it to Amber. “Here—as thanks for the Dusk Stone. Took me a minute to realize that I don’t actually need this.”

Smiling up at Aedre, Amber closed her laptop. "Morning," she greeted the other researcher, who sat down next to her. Either Aedre had perked up since yesterday, or she was putting on the same cheerful act she had herself recently. Whichever one it was, Amber decided not to mention the subject of the missing Pokeball. Probably not what her friend wanted to talk about first thing in the morning, and she was unlikely to have heard back this soon.

Her eyes widened at the offered gift, the smooth blue gem Aedre had dug from the cave yesterday. The Water Stone. "Aw, thanks," she replied, picking up the shimmering stone. "I'll most likely run into a good few Water types while looking for fossils in beachside caves, though what if you need it later on?"

As claws gripped the chair, Amber whirled round. "Eeeeeye!" Almandine gazed up, grinning that toothy grin as she set her sights on the gem. Right away, this earned a growl from Kyra, which in turn had all the researcher's four other Pokemon surrounding the goblin with warning glares.

Her first meeting with the Sableye fresh in her mind, Amber drew back in the seat, raising the crystal high, but remained firm. "Alma, no. You can have gems like the ones you had just now, not this one." Still holding the Dusk Ball in her other hand, she withdrew Almandine in a beam of light.

Clipping the capsule to her belt, she frowned down at the gouges etched deep into the side of the chair. "Hmm, as remarkable as it is how sharp a Sableye's claws are, this is going to take some explaining..."

Ty Westgrove

Mesalon Pokecenter

@LuckyBlackCat

Ty groaned as a repetitive high-pitched sound broke through his peaceful slumber. Half-awake, he robotically moved his hand to hit the snooze button, only to start when the alarm clock felt a lot softer than he expected. His brown eyes flew open to find his hand resting on the forehead of an equally baffled Igglybuff.

"Sorry, bro," Ty mumbled. "Old habit." The trainer then proceeded to pull his blanket up a little higher and try to go back to sleep. But within a few minutes, Medic managed to convince her groggy trainer to get up earlier on this momentous day, as he had told her to do.

Ty rushed through the shower, quickly clothed himself, and spent a good twenty minutes styling his hair. Hunk the Timburr joined his trainer by the mirror, making sure his log had just the right amount and size of splinters to look a little more menacing than usual. As usual, Reaper crossed his bladed arms in impatience, occasionally hissing a complaint to the Igglybuff next to him.

By the time the group reached the cafeteria, a few other trainers were hanging out there. Ty recognized most of them from the evening before. He frowned slightly, wondering if they were still okay with him after he asked about their wild story and then failed to come up with a good, friendly response to all the drama they had gone through. But, the only certain way to fail is to never try.

The leather-clad trainer chose a table next to Sophia's, hoping to strike up a conversation but willing to eat alone if she didn't want to. He took a sip from his large cup of coffee and passed some bowls of food around to his Pokémon.

"Mornin'," Ty casually addressed Sophia. "You still want to do that contest in Vareena? I've seen some contests, but I've never participated myself."

Sophia Danvers

Mesalon Pokecentre

@Zanavy

It wouldn't do any good, Sophia decided, to sit around moping. She had other, better things to do. Like finally get that gym badge as proof of her progress.

She felt sick with nerves at the thought, but took a few slices of toast for herself and set out some bowls for her Pokemon. Once released from their capsules, her companions gathered round, Lacey squealing in delight and tucking right in. Grimalkin and Lumas followed suit, while Arcturus seemed to absorb the food into its body. Clarus didn't eat, instead floating above the other Pokemon and keeping watch, particularly over Fantoccino. "Ready for a big day, all of you?" Sophia asked, the words coming out shakier than she intended.

Despite a "Zor!" of protest from Clarus, Fantoccino drifted up, the eerie chill he brought intensifying as he took his own breakfast. Sophia's shoulders drooped, tension leaving them as the frustration from earlier ebbed away. It should have been a relief, but instead of feeling pleasantly calm, she just felt emotionally burnt out already. "Well, you got quite a feast there," she muttered. "But seriously..." Refusing to show any vulnerability now the hustle and bustle of early risers began to fill the cafeteria, it was with her mind that she continued speaking to the Shuppet.

"If... If I'd put on a better show earlier, I wouldn't have to feel like this. I shouldn't have to. So it's a reminder that I've gotta keep pushing myself until it pays off. And it will, believe me it will."

Fantoccino tilted his head as he listened. Then, he billowed forward in a blur. Sophia pulled back, but all the Shuppet did was settle on the table, his cloak expanding like a tablecloth. The next second, he rose up, doing his own version of the classic tablecloth trick by phasing through all items and leaving them in place. He spun in the air, his fabric-like body flowing, and stopped, rolling his eyes around as if dizzy. As he laughed, Sophia couldn't help but do the same, partly out of surprise. "Ok, now that was a show," she commented, out loud this time.

Was Fantoccino actually trying to cheer her up? But... Weren't Shuppets drawn to negativity? Maybe he was only acting like this because he'd already fed, or maybe he saw her as a friend instead of just a food source.

It was then that someone else approached her - Ty, taking a seat at the next table. At his mention of contests, Sophia inwardly squirmed. Great. So she did have another contest competitor, just as she'd suspected. Someone else who knew more about them than she did. Nonetheless, she put on a grin.

"Yep! Finally my chance to shine!" she announced as if she had no doubts she could pull this off. If only that were the case. "And as you may have seen," she added, gesturing towards the Shuppet as if presenting a performer, "Fantoccino here sure likes to entertain people."

Oscar is glad to see that He is able to see Mesalon disappear in the distance before anyone could notice him up and active. He went to the gym to drop a letter with a student to give to Lan. It was a letter for Sophia. After explaining that Oscar had some personal alone meditation to do, the student happily took it and headed off. Oscar signs with a heavy heart, knowing that Sophia is going to be mad that he is not there to praise her win and breaking his promise but he needs to gather his thoughts and affirm his motivations.

He battled some feral pokemon on the way along the path. He decides to use Skoll and Nomia to increase cohesion. They work well thou Nomia is having some anxiety problems. As they go along the road, they get ironed out.

Aedre Charbonnet

— Mesalon City Gym —

Aedre blinked. “Well, that’s true,” she said, repocketing the Water Stone. Better safe than sorry which, in this case, was feeding the stone to Almandine, who had by now noticed the stone and responded accordingly with a cry and a few gouges on her chair.

“Oh, no. That was my fault—for offering the stone. I’ll go explain it,” Aedre said, rising from her seat and looking around for someone in a uniform. Spotting someone wiping down the tables with the help of his Shellos, Aedre walked over, her nerves kicking in now that she was closing the distance. What was she going to say? ‘Sorry for inciting the destruction of governmental property?’

Her eyes drifted to the other trainers in the canteen, some with all their Pokemon out and some with none at all. Perhaps she could offer to replace the chair that saw so much use before today—that’d be a start, right?

The Pokemon Center employee noticed her approach, looking up, and Aedre jumped on her chance.

“Hi, um, I’d like to report a damaged chair.” Aedre pointed to where Amber sat with a sheepish smile. “Is there some sort of replacement or reimbursement policy?”

“If it works it’s good,” the man said, holding his towel out to receive another dribble of water from his Shellos. “And if it’s good, you’re good.”

Aedre paused. “Oh, alright,” she said, hesitating briefly before heading back to Amber. Well, it was true that the chair still worked. A glancing couple claw marks that didn’t affect the integrity of the structure didn’t matter much in the long run. Besides, Pokemon probably damaged property all the time. This was likely neither the first nor last time something would be scratched in the Center, and with all this reasoning Aedre was starting to wonder whether she should be feeling more guilty.

“He said, ‘if it works it’s good,’” Aedre told Amber. “I guess this isn’t a rare occurrence.”

When Aedre sat, Thea sidled up to her, planting herself on Aedre's lap. A glance at her other Pokemon told Aedre they were ready to leave, and she made a mental note to record that Decus didn’t end up eating anything after all.

“Do you have plans for this morning?” Aedre asked, looking at Amber. While she was in limbo, unable to do anything except wait, she could still tag along and help out when possible. Better something than nothing, right?

Amber looked up from the claw marks to her friend, who took back the stone. "Thanks for the offer, but it's probably best if you hold on to it," she told her. "Maybe I shouldn't collect any rare crystals until Alma's better trained."

As Aedre took the blame, Amber shook her head. "No, no need, it's not your fault, Almandine's my responsibility." She stood up, but the other trainer was already heading towards the first employee she spotted. Hearing their brief conversation, Amber relaxed a little.

She sat back down, smiling up at Aedre as she returned. "Ah, good. Seems like this is just another hurdle beginner trainers have to face." Resting her hand on the green Pokeball, she added, "Still, I'll have to teach her to respect public property. As well everyone's property for that matter."

When Aedre asked about plans, Amber tilted her head, thinking over what still needed to be done in Mesalon before she left for Vareena. The caves to explore had been the main thing to draw her interest, but yesterday's encounter - informative as it had been - wasn't something she wanted to risk repeating. "Well, I guess all that's left for me to do here is the gym battle," she replied, then glanced at her Pokemon. "Got to make sure you're all prepared though..." She trailed off. One of the five was missing.

"Tacita? Where'd you go Tacita?" Turning her head, she groaned at the sight before her. On the table, where her last piece of croissant had been, was an empty plate. Right next to it, the Rowlet preened crumbs from her feathers and gave her trainer the most innocent look she could.

"Ahem." Amber fixed her with a glower. "Looks like Almandine isn't the only one I need to teach a thing or two. Just what is it with thieving Pokemo..." Remembering the Sneasel footprint, she stopped, her face an awkward rictus as she shifted her eyes towards Aedre. Her friend hadn't needed that reminder.

"Ehh, sorry." She rubbed the back of her neck. "I wasn't referring to... that. I'm guessing you'd rather focus on other things for now."

“It’s fine,” Aedre said, doing her best to smother the roll of guilt that washed over her when Amber brought up thieving Pokemon. Instead, she focused on Amber’s mention of the gym. She herself hadn’t thought to challenge the gyms before since she had only ever been a visitor in Kosei. Now, though, it looked like she might be staying a while, or at least until she was able to find what she’d… lost.

A soft flutter at her shoulder signalled Little’s landing.

“Hey, Little.” Reaching up to scratch Little’s chin, Aedre smiled, which prompted Thea to shift indignantly on her lap.

“Toge,” Thea said, pointing at Little with a glare. “Togepi.”

Little preened his feathers nonchalantly, pretending not to notice. Beside Aedre, Decus shifted, his sash drifting above him as he pushed away his bowl of mince, watching Thea and Little with what Aedre could only interpret as interest.

“Alright, upsy-daisy,” Aedre said, standing and lifting Thea up. Little managed to stay on her shoulder despite the motion, but his brief moment of imbalance afforded Thea a satisfied “To!” which Little took with a curt ruffle of his feathers.

“Should we head to the gym then?” Aedre asked, ignoring her Pokemon in favor of Amber. “We’re ready to go when you are.”

Amber winced at Aedre's haste in changing the subject - proof that she'd said the wrong thing. Trying to push the blunder to the back of her mind, she went with the other topic, the gym challenge.

"Yeah, if you're ok with it," she replied, putting away her laptop and standing up. She figured Aedre wasn't concerned with gym battles herself, since her visit to Kosei was meant to be short, but maybe her curiosity would extend to them. "Since I have a Ghost type, and you're studying one, this could provide some insight into them that'll help with your research. Provided Alma behaves herself, that is."

Going by what Amber had heard, taking on tough challenges together was a good way to earn the trust and respect of a Pokemon. Maybe this was how to train the Sableye. How fair would it be, though, to send her newer Pokemon right into a milestone battle with no experience of competing against another trainer?

"Hmm..." She glanced at her team. Aeshna zipped from side to side as if she couldn't wait to get out, while Kyra bounced around, eyes wide, tail wagging. Tacita fluttered over, nesting in her trainer's pocket, while Chalcedony scuttled across the tiles to Amber's feet, closely followed by Larimar. "You ready for this?" the researcher asked, then turned her gaze to Aedre.

"Just to make sure they are, would you be alright with a sparring match?" she suggested. "A match with the same number of Pokemon each, of course."

Not only would it be a valuable training experience, it could help take Aedre's mind off things.

Aedre lit up at Amber’s suggestion. Comparing Decus’ behavior with that of Alma’s would yield valuable insight into Honedge, if not ghost-types in general. The type differences might prove a bit tricky to factor out, but with some reading up Aedre was sure she’d be able to figure it out. How the two ghost-types would act in each others’ company, though, was uncertain—a thrilling uncertainty—and Aedre couldn’t wait to see, but…

Aedre exhaled. She was getting ahead of herself again. There were lots of things to work on with Decus before she started pushing him into uncomfortable situations. For now, she’d have to settle for patience.

“I’ll do my best to keep up with her,” Aedre said, meeting Alma’s eyes with a hesitant smile. The Sableye had sharp claws, but the chair was just a mistake… right?

Aedre’s eyes widened at Amber’s proposal. A sparring match—now? Here? She looked around uncertainly, eyes bouncing between her team and Amber’s. The uncertainty of the outcome made Aedre nervous, and the anxiety welling up around the entire situation made refusal a tantalizing option. But, as her eyes settled on Little, Aedre realized it didn’t really take that much thought. It was a no-risks match, and she should see it as an opportunity, not a risk.

“Okay. Let’s do it,” Aedre said with a smile.

Outside the Pokemon Center, the trainers found an empty patch of dusty land and quickly designated their mock battlefield. The terms were simple: three-on-three, may both partiesreach the Pokemon Center swiftly after the battle.

“Good luck! But don’t go easy on me!” Aedre shouted with a grin. Underestimating her just because she didn’t have much trainer experience was a bad idea because if she were to brag, she’d admit she was a quick study.

Soon after Ty sat down, he saw two of the trainers from yesterday leave with a bunch of Pokémon in tow. Dang it. He was hoping he'd found a group to chill with, but maybe they were all eager to leave without him?

Well, at least Sophia was still taking her time to have some breakfast. Hopefully she could convince her group to wait a little while longer, after he tried for his gym badge.

Ty listened to Sophia while pouring an abundance of syrup on his waffle. He turned to Fantoccino with a smile.

"A performer, eh? My Pokémon are, too. Would you like to give us a little show?"

A nearby hacking sound drew Ty's attention. Evidently, Hunk was trying to inhale his food. Ty chuckled and slapped the Timburr's back as he gasped for breath, a little embarrassed but no worse for wear.

"No need to eat that fast, big guy. The day's still young. I bet you'll get your Low Kick spot-on before noon, and we'll still have plenty of time to beat the gym leader after that."

The leather-clad trainer turned back to Sophia and her Shuppet.

"Sorry for the interruption. You have my full attention for at least the next ten seconds."

At Ty's mention of a show, Sophia grinned. "Sure we would! ... Ah!" She glanced down at the Timburr, who'd tried gobbling down his breakfast a little too quickly. "You ok there?" she asked, watching Lacey continue patting Hunk's back once Ty had done so.

When it turned out there was no need to worry - the Fighting type had just been hyped up about challenging the gym - Sophia's smile returned. "Pfff, that fight's gonna be easy anyway," she said, hoping it really would be this time round. "For me, at least. And it's ok. Alright Fanto-Aaaahh!"

Before Sophia could finish speaking, Fantoccino rose up to a light, spreading his cloak wide, casting shadows over the walls that swelled into a multitude of monsters straight out of a nightmare. Ragged wings and clawed limbs stretched across every surface. Gasps sounded through the cafeteria. A few tables away, a man spat his coffee everywhere. Most of Sophia's Pokemon stared in surprise. Grimalkin hissed and ran under the table, while Arcturus drooped its limbs with an exasperated "Hyah!".

Sophia glared at the little Ghost type, whose eyes shone with glee as he chuckled at everyone's reactions. "That is NOT what Ty and I meant."

Aedre Charbonnet & Amber Pine

— Mesalon City —

“Thea, you first?” Aedre looked at her trusty drama queen, who stepped forward with a mischievous grin. Seeing as Thea was happily settled on their side of the field, Aedre looked to Amber with a hesitant smile. Which Pokemon would Amber use and how would Thea best counter them? That most of Amber's Pokemon were rock-types wasn't very reassuring considering Little's type disadvantage. Decus was the only one who held the advantage in that regard, but entrusting the battle to her newest Pokemon wasn't a wise move.

But, watching as Amber talked with her own Pokemon, Aedre was reminded that this wasn't a competition. She rubbed her hands together, trying to dispell her competitive streak. This wasn't an exam or field test, she reminded herself; there would be no losers here, only winners.

“Ready when you are!” Aedre shouted with a grin, realizing that if she looked past all her anxiety about the outcome, the battle might actually be fun.

Amber took her place, facing Aedre. However this went, there was no need to worry. It was just a sparring match, to train for whatever else lay ahead...

Tacita must have felt her tense. With a soft "Row!", the owl fluttered out of Amber's pocket and perched on her shoulder, nuzzling her face. "Hey, you want to go first?" Amber asked, relaxing as she ruffled the bird's feathers. With a hoot of affirmation, Tacita swooped and landed, her beady eyes fixed on Thea.

As Aedre grinned, Amber found herself doing the same. Maybe, just for now, the battle would help them put aside their fears. "Ok, begin this with Leafage!" she called. Tacita spread her wings wide, launching a flurry of leaves at the Togepi.

“Thea, dodge it!” Aedre shouted.

Thea, for her credit, was already doing so, and the move grazed her side—her shell and maybe her arm, but Thea shrugged it off quickly, turning back to glance at Aedre for a second.

“Right, right,” Aedre said, racking her brains for her next move as she fumbled for her Pokedex. “Use Metronome!”

Thea nodded, waving her arms back and forth once, twice before she glowed briefly, sprouting green spikes.

Aedre winced, glancing down at her Pokedex. Spiky Shield, apparently, a grass-type move that protects the user from attacks and damages physical attackers. Not too useful against a ranged attacker like Tacita. “Metronome again!” While Aedre was counting on one of the randomly-pulled moves to work, her more sensible side had no such aspirations. There were over five hundred known Pokemon moves, and more were being discovered all the time. For Thea to be able to pull just the right ones—the damaging ones, and one that could exploit the Rowlet's weakness—was pretty unlikely. But she had to start somewhere, and Thea was reliable in ways Metrenome wasn't, so she mentally crossed her fingers as she watched Thea wave her arms again in the rhythmic beat she'd done before. Her Pokedex registered the move before it even Thea even finished her waving, and Aedre's eyes widened at the text that appeared on the screen: Dragon Rush.

Amber wasn't disheartened at the leaves glancing off of Thea's shell. On the contrary, she whipped out her notebook. "Well," she said, scribbling frantically, "that backs up the theory of why Togepis keep part of their shells, as a defense mechanism."

A hoot drew her attention back to the battlefield. Tacita pointed a wing at Thea as Aedre called out the countering move - Metronome. The Togepi glowed green, cactus-like spines jutting from her body. "Another Leafage!" Amber called - having Tacita try out her contact making moves, as she'd originally considered, would be a rather bad idea.

The barrage of leaves didn't even make a dent in the shield. When the Togepi retaliated, it was with quite a different random move - a blue energy wave that formed a dragon shape, slamming into the owl before she could react. "Rowww..." With an exhausted cooing noise, Tacita flopped to the ground.

"Tacita!" At once, Amber held out the Pokeball, withdrawing the fainted combatant. "Come on back. Wow, Metronome really is quite something." Maybe not the most reliable of moves, but sometimes, luck was all it took to decide a battle. "Ok Larimar, you want to go next?"

The sturdy Rock type crawled forward, tilting her head, round eyes fixed on the Togepi as she sized her up. "Alright, use Scratch!" Amber commanded. The Anorith scuttled with surprising speed for her type, lashing a claw at Thea.

Aedre stared as Amber withdrew Tacita, mouth poised to catch a Cutiefly. Of all the moves Thea could have Metronome'd out, there were only a handfull of moves that dealt substantial damage, so for Thea to so perfectly pull Dragon Rush, a dragon-type move that was, according to her Pokedex, learned by the likes of Dragonite and Garchomp, was pretty much slim to nil.

Thea, though, was not as shocked as Aedre, and she bounced up to Aedre with a gleeful grin, waving her arms around to get Aedre's attention. "To!"

“Right, good—great job, Thea. That was—wow, keep that up and we won't even need Little or Dee,” Aedre said, laughing nervously. Maybe the next time Thea got into an argument with a teammate, Aedre should be afraid for the teammate instead of the little egg-encased ball of surprises that was her Togepi.

Across the field, Amber had called out her next Pokemon: Larimar, her Anorith. And Thea, boosted by her fresh victory, sauntered onto her side of the field with her hands raised dramatically.

“Yes, Thea,” Aedre said, smiling out of amused exasperation, “Metronome.”

Thea waved her hands, but Larimar was fast, and she struck just as Thea was completing her move. A swipe of her claws, thanks to her lower vantage point, took Thea's balance and sent her reeling onto her side just as her Metronome move went into play. Confide, Aedre's Pokedex told her, was Chatot's special move and would lower the opponent's special attack. In this case, though, Larimar was a physical attacker, and Thea was on her back, trying unsuccessfully to throw her weight onto a side.

“Thea! Get up! Hurry! Aedre called, alarmed. Larimar had tapped into one of Thea's primal weaknesses: her round shell, and therefore inability to get back up quickly. Usually, Aedre was the one pulling her back up, but in a battle Aedre could do no such thing. Instead, she could only watch as the events unfolded, wondering whether this was karma coming to pay its respects to Thea for her earlier theatrics.

"Now's your chance, Larimar!" Amber put away her notebook and pulled out her Pokedex, glancing from the Anorith to the screen. Water Gun would probably be less effective than physical attacks, and Fury Cutter wouldn't be the best move to use on a Fairy type. "Use Scratch again!"

Larimar knew exactly how to go about this. In an instant, she scurried behind the struggling Togepi. Before Thea could right herself and turn the battle back to her favour, Larimar aimed a claw at the side of her head.

Aedre winced as the claw came down, pulling out Thea's Pokeball to return her. “You did great, Thea." Taking one Pokemon down with Metronome was already more than what she could reasonably expect, statistically speaking.

Glancing back at the field where the Anorith stood, Aedre hesitated. She was far more comfortable using Little next, but Decus had the type advantage, and she did want him to get some experience with trainer battles. He was still low-leveled, but at least he was immune to Scratch.

“Decus?” Aedre looked to her Honedge, who drifted over with erratic swishing movements Aedre could only interpret as him being 'happy.'

“Alright. Start out with Swords Dance, then Tackle,” Aedre called. Hopefully the boost would give Decus what he needed to make an impact on Larimar's carapace.

On the field, Decus swayed back and forth, seemingly in a trance. His blade glinted off sun as he moved, then suddenly came down in Larimar's direction—a challenge.

Even though Decus was the opposing Pokemon, Amber stared in sheer fascination as the Honedge's swift movements heightened his focus. "Quite some graceful swordplay already there," she commented, before shifting her attention to Larimar. Now was a perfect opportunity to get a move in, but which one? Scratch wouldn't work, Fury Cutter would barely leave a mark, and Harden would only do so much to counter the boost. That left one option.

"Ok, quick, use Water Gun!"

Larimar raised her head, aiming the jet at Decus, but seemed to hold back. The stream, much thinner than it should be, splashed against the Honedge as if from a child's water pistol. Amber grimaced. This had to be because of Thea's move, still in effect.

Shaking Larimar's attack off, Decus attempted his Tackle, flinging himself at the fossil Pokemon.

Although Larimar's shell protected against cuts, it couldn't protect her from being knocked across the battlefield. "Hold on, Larimar!" Amber shouted, watching the spirited little Pokemon scuttle back to face her opponent. The Anorith's resolve remained strong, as did her body, but the disadvantage was clear.

"Come back for now." Returning her to her Pokeball, Amber took another capsule from her belt. A green one. "Well," she said, eyes flicking from the Dusk Ball to Aedre, "here's your opportunity to study and compare Ghost types."

After a moment's hesitation - who was to say this Pokemon would even listen to her - Amber pressed the button. She had to gain her newest team member's trust and respect somehow. In a flash of red, Almandine appeared, that sharp-toothed grin stretching across her face at the sight of a formidable opponent.

“Yep!” Aedre looked at Decus, who seemed wetted by Larimar's Water Gun but still rearing to go. Against Almadine, he would have the advantage of Fury Cutter, but it'd still be a close call, especially since Decus was naturally susceptible to both of Almadine's types. If the Sableye knew strong dark- or ghost-type moves, Aedre didn't like her chances, but at least Decis had managed a Swords Dance already. “Decus, use Fury Cutter!”

Decus flipped his wet sash, scattering water droplets as he rushed towards Almadine blade first.

The blade struck before Almandine had a chance to move. The Sableye reeled back with a yelp, then scampered forward, snickering as if to ask if that was the best Decus could do. Nonetheless, Amber couldn't help but wince. This was just a casual battle, but if Alma lost, that wouldn't do much for her mood or training.

Amber consulted her Pokedex, thinking fast. If there was a way to throw off Decus' moves, that would be best... "Alma, use Astonish!"

The Sableye opened her mouth, letting out an unearthly shriek. Maybe, Amber thought, goosebumps rising on her skin from the sound, that would startle the other Ghost type too much to attack.

Aedre was about to call for another Fury Cutter when the sound shrilled out of Almadine, shocking her into a momentary standstill. When she recovered, though, seeing Decus drift slowly back upright, bouncing up and down midair as his sash waved uncertainly, Amber was already calling her next move.

"Good work, Alma!" Amber commented, watching Decus freeze in midair. Just as he shook off the stunned stillness, the researcher gave Almandine another command. "Use that again! Astonish!"

The thankfully compliant Sableye leapt forward, filling the air with that same eerie wail. Amber wasn't counting on another flinch - she couldn't always rely on luck - but either way, the move would hit hard against another ghost.

On the field, Decus shuddered, his wet sash rippling in a disconcerting manner, but this time he did not fall over. Instead, he sank down onto the ground, the tip of his blade sinking into the earth below.

“Decus!” Aedre shouted, covering her ears against Almadine's wail. “Use Fury Cutter again!”

Shakily, Decus drifted up out of the indent he'd made in the ground, then accelerated slowly forwards at Almadine as her cry trailed off, his blade glinting in the sun.

Almandine stumbled back as the blade slashed across her. Like before, she steadied herself and advanced, but did so with laboured steps. A black mist-like substance seeped from cuts running along her torso.

Amber shuddered, but knew exactly which move this called for. "You're doing a great job!" she encouraged, ears still ringing from the shrieks. Not that she minded too much. No wonder people described ghost cries as unforgettable - she'd just had to experience that herself. "Hang in there and use Recover!"

A golden glow formed around Almandine's body, then faded, revealing smooth skin where wounds had been a moment ago.

Aedre hesitated, then pulled out Decus' Pokeball. “Good job, Decus. C'mon back for now.” With both Astonish and Recovery, Almadine was set to play the long game whereas Decus was still new, inexperienced, and altogether not ready for a loss. Maybe Aedre was projecting, and maybe she wasn't; either way, she wasn't taking any chances.

“You ready, Little? Aedre asked, looking to the Fletchling perched on a branch behind her, who'd taken flight at the sound of his name, flitting to her side of the battlefield.

“Alright,” Aedre said, grinning. Back to the stuff she had experience with. “Quick Attack!”

Little threw himself up in the air, then swept forwards at Almadine.

When the bird made contact with Almandine, instead of knocking her back, he simply passed straight through.

Amber took the opportunity right away. "Hit with Night Shade!" The Sableye turned and sent forth a wave of dark energy - which did nothing more to Little than the Quick Attack had done to her.

"Ahh... Mutually immune, I see," Amber said, checking her Pokedex as she should have done before. Sure enough, neither Normal nor Ghost Pokemon could affect each other using solely moves of their type. She gave an awkward smile. "Ehh, easy thing to forget."

“Oh,” Aedre said, laughing lightly. The type immunities had completely slipped her mind, with her caught up in what Decus might feel and everything. She paused, then focused on Amber. “I think Decus is pretty much out, considering how much damage he's taken, so let's just say it's Almadine's win on that one.”

At Aedre's words, Almandine perked up from her disappointed slouch.

"Ah, well Decus put up a good fight there," Amber replied. It was probably best for him not to get knocked out, if this was his first trainer battle. "Alma, you did great too, but it's time to come back now." Grumbling at the current unsuited match, the Sableye slunk away from her opponent and let Amber return her. Hopefully the one victory would mean something to her, at least.

Taking another Pokeball, the researcher sent her Anorith back into the fray. "Your turn again, Larimar!" The fossil Pokemon eyed Little with caution. While most Rock types had the advantage over Flying types, her Bug typing cancelled this out, at least in terms of defense. The fact that she had yet to learn a Rock type move meant this fight could go either way.

"Use Scratch!" At Amber's command, Larimar sped forward and lashed at the bird.

“Little, let's try that Quick Attack again!” Aedre shouted.

On the field, Little dove down at Larimar, who was ready with her claws. The edges grazed him as he swooped past, his own attack largely bouncing off Larimar's hard exoskeleton.

“Right, rock-type resistances,” Aedre muttered, looking down at her Pokedex for guidance. “Try Peck this time, Little!”

Making a turn in the air, Little dove again, beak shooting down at Larimar.

The beak struck with perfect precision, jabbing between the segments of Larimar's shell. The Anorith tottered on her claws before steadying herself, her guard back up.

"Defend with Harden!" Amber called. Larimar's carapace began to shine as she braced herself for Little's next move.

With the Harden taking effect, Little's attack was largely absorbed by Larimar's shell. Aedre hesitated, glancing between the Anorith and Little, who'd swooped up to a hover out of reach of Larimar's claws. At this rate, Larimar's Scratches would be more efficient than Little's Pecks, but did that justify a Growl? If Aedre remembered correctly, moves like Growl and Tail Whip were most effective at the beginning of a battle, not in the middle of one. But, at the same time, maybe she was looking at it all too formulaically; battles weren't all black-and-white, predictable based off number alone, so maybe the best thing to do was to stop treating it as such.

“Growl, Little!” Aedre glanced down at her Pokedex. Growl, then more Pecks? Or another Growl?

She looked up as Little uttered out a harsh, drawn out sqawk, realizing Little truly held the advantage here, since Larimar didn't seem to have access to rock-type moves. As an airborne fighter, Little could launch a slew of Growls without fearing an attack. But, Larimar's Hardens would easily bring him back up to speed, so that tactic was out.

“Follow that up with another Peck, Little!” Aedre shouted.

On her command, Little swooped down again, beak-first.

Larimar scuttled back from the squawk, her wing-like protrusions bristling. When she advanced again, it was with much more subdued movements. Before she could retaliate or dodge, the beak jabbed another chink in her armour.

Amber thought fast. Growl and Harden meant physical attacks would be dampened on both sides, so a change of strategy might give Larimar the advantage. "Water Gun this time!" she commanded.

The Anorith raised her head, launching a stronger water blast than before at the bird. While Water Gun was far from her most powerful attack, having a non-physical move to fall back on could prove useful in situations like this.

Aedre's widened as Little fell, wings bogged down by Larimar's Water Gun. On Decus the Water Gun's effects had been negligible since only his sash was a target, but on Little, his entire body was at risk, being covered with feathers. And, since he was left a much more susceptible target as a result of the Water Guns, Aedre doubted the battle would be long. Maybe she'd be able to drag the battle out like before, but the end result was the same, and she'd rather not prolong a battle to no end.

“Little, let's give that one more shot. Try and dodge the Water Guns and get in another Peck,” Aedre called.

Little shook his feathers off and took to the air again, shakily, then aimed at Larimar yet again.

As the repeated Flying type attacks wore her down, Larimar stumbled, scratches showing on her carapace despite her boosted defense. Even so, she regained her balance, her focus on her opponent just as intent.

"It shouldn't take much more!" Amber called. "Again, Water Gun!" Just as Little rose back up, Larimar shot another water burst into the sky, striking the aerial fighter with perfect accuracy. The bird, feathers waterlogged, swayed in midair and began to drift down.

“Good job, Little. Take a rest,” Aedre said, returning Little from where he landed. Then, after a beat of silence, Aedre looked to Amber with a smile that relaxed as she spoke. “That was a good battle. Fun, even. We should do that again sometime—maybe after I work with Decus some more.”

Amber smiled back. It had been a close one, but that meant worthwhile experience for both of them, and both Pokemon teams. "Yeah. You put up a good fight there," she told Aedre, "and once you've trained up Decus a little more... Well, with those moves, anyone who challenges you will have to be very careful indeed."

With a slight laugh, she crouched down to Larimar. Chalcedony crawled over, nuzzling his fellow fossil Pokemon, while Kyra bounced and yapped, an equally excited Aeshna darting from side to side above her. "I see that's boosted your morale," she said, taking the Anorith's Pokeball. "Come on back now, let's get you healed up."

She returned Larimar and headed back to the Pokemon centre, glancing over at her friend. It had just been a quick training session, the victory a matter of luck. She hoped Aedre, who'd been a hair's breadth from winning, wouldn't take the loss too badly in light of recent events.

Aedre was a bit lost in her thoughts after the battle, unable to help a roll of disappointment in her loss. Though she kept telling herself that it was normal, natural even, to lose to a trainer so early on, especially one more experienced than her like Amber, a loss could only signify bad things, not good.

Catching Amber's glance at her, Aedre straightened, putting on a smile again. “I'm fine, really. It was a good fight.” Which it was. It really was, and with this in mind Aedre willed herself to stop being disappointed because it was a slippery and unproductive slope to resentment, and that wasn't the original goal.

“Hey, I lost today, but I'll beat you one day,” she said, flashing a grin at Amber. Competition academic settings were no different from Pokemon battles: there were winners and losers, and most people involved had competitive streaks.

As the nightmare visions appeared along the walls and even the floor, Hunk jumped into action. The Timburr growled and stood to place himself solidly in front of Lacey, stump out in a shielding position, as if to protect the small Gothita from the dread shadow creatures. Hunk glared bravely at the darkness -- while trying to conceal his shaking hands.

Reaper paused his eating momentarily to look at the spontaneous shadow monstrosities. The Scyther gave a nod of acknowledgement, mildly impressed, before returning to his meal.

"Jeez!" Ty exclaimed with a flinch. Though the trainer who requested a show was the most acutely aware that something was about to happen, the sudden and all-encompassing visions were still enough to startle just about anyone. After a few seconds, Ty's look of shock morphed into a mischievous smile.

When it was over, Ty laughed in an odd mix between amusement and a tinge of nervousness.

"Good one, little dude," Ty addressed Fantoccino. "I don't think Pokémon contests have a scary category, but if they did, you'd totally win."

A loud whining sound, like somebody slowly letting the air out of a balloon, filled the Pokémon Center. Medic, who had apparently been too paralyzed with terror to make any motion or sound, was definitely doing so now. Ty turned toward the loud crying with a startled look and then his cheeks turned slightly red.

"Ah jeez... It's okay, Medic. It wasn't real. C'mere."

The tearful Igglybuff ran to her trainer's outstretched arms and buried her squishy body as tightly against his chest as possible. Her sobbing quieted down a little, but with her species' particularly powerful lungs, she was still likely to wake up half of the Pokémon Center. The blond trainer spent a minute petting her and murmuring vague attempts at motherly reassurance. Once he was sure the worst of her panic was over, Ty rolled his eyes and looked toward Reaper.

"Alright, our turn. We could use something silly after that." Ty left the table for a minute, still carrying Medic bundled in his jacket, and returned with a few pieces of fruit. The Scyther gave Ty a look that seemed to convey 'I'd rather walk into an Onix's lair.'

"We'll have plenty of time for barrel rolls later, but not inside," Ty argued. "I don't think that light can take another hit. Now, back up a little bit."

At Ty's gesture, Reaper sighed and hovered toward an empty corner. Ty tossed a large apple toward the bug type. The Scyther slashed up with both of its blade-arms, slicing the apple into three pieces, and then managed to hit two of them on the way back down. The trick wasn't perfected yet - he couldn't quite get to nine evenly sliced chunks - but Ty still grinned with satisfaction. Ty picked up an apple chunk and gave it to Medic. The Igglybuff continued to weep slightly as she nibbled on the treat.

"Alright, orange time."

Ty set down an orange in the middle of an empty table and backed away. Reaper rolled his eyes. Then he closed them and took a couple deep, centering breaths. A blur of green appeared around the orange. For a second, all was still, the orange unchanged. Then, the orange exploded into a pile of sticky juice and pulp from its many clean cuts. Ty laughed, a worker in the distance huffed about the mess these people were making, and Reaper victoriously licked the juice from his blades like the blood of his enemies. It was then that the two battling researchers walked back into the Pokémon Center.

Oscar Berg

@LuckyBlackCat@OtomostheCrazy@Dusksong@Zanavy

Oscar stops for lunch and releases all his pokemon. He gives them all some food before they go and form their groups. Oscar sits on a rock nearby in deep thought. He is thinking about Team Noble's true intentions and how information about other teams from other regions can help him if at all. He also thinks about the others like how Ty is oblivious to the events unfolding and how Sophia is fixated on impressing her parents and her reputation more than doing a good deed for no reward in return.

Diasho instantly picks up on Oscar's emotionly state and after the others have eaten and before they can play or anything else, He talks to them about cheering their trainer up. Skoll and Roadrunner were onboard quickly with fiery passion. Aurora smiles slyly, loving how passionate her future mate is as she joins in too. Nomia was a little shy and reluctant at first but smiles and joins with a smile. Kushala was the last to join in as he is still getting used to having all these pokemon and Oscar as family and still be traumatized but was eventually convinced to join in.

what they ended up deciding is some playful mischief. First, Roadrunner went up and swiped Oscar's lunch and before Oscar could react, Roadrunner passed to to Kushala who ran and gave it to Skoll. Oscar smirked as he saw what they were doing and it was working. Oscar decided to play their game and took chase. He had fun bonding with his pokemon as the passed the food to one another, keeping it out of Oscar's reach.

Sophia Danvers

Mesalon Pokecentre

@Zanavy

"Ehh!" Sophia grimaced, watching Fantoccino grin at Ty's compliment, then glared at the other trainer. "Don't encourage him!"

Another reason not to egg on the Ghost type became apparent, as a high-pitched wail filled the air. Sophia winced, looking down at the little Igglybuff, who sobbed as any young child would. "Hey... Hey, Medic, it's ok, they're gone now," she reassured the baby Pokemon, who rushed into her trainer's arms. That tearful face brought a shudder of guilt. If she could actually get Fantoccino to listen to her, this wouldn't have happened.

Even Fantoccino looked rather ashamed, his smile turning strained as he floated down with a sheepish murmur of "Shuuu-ppet...". Glowering at him, Sophia reached for the Pokeball. "Alright, time out for you," she grumbled, returning the Ghost type.

For a minute, Sophia and Lacey helped Ty comfort the crying Igglybuff. Once the pink puffball had calmed down, Ty made his attempt to lighten the mood, gathering up several pieces of fruit and throwing an apple in the Scyther's direction. Of course, Sophia thought with a huff as the bug sliced up the apple in midair. After the Shuppet fiasco, Ty just had to show off how well trained his Pokemon were. "Heh, not bad I guess," she commented, with a critical glance at the chunk the Scyther had missed, "but if Fantoccino had been behaving himself just now..."

That was when Reaper did the same thing with an orange placed on the table. A flurry of wings and blades darted around the fruit - and apparently missed. "Huh." Sophia's lips twitched into a slight smirk as she leaned over. "You might wanna try harder..."

Without warning, the orange exploded. Sophia pulled back, her psychic reflexes kicking in, deflecting chunks of fruit. "Watch it!" she yelled, checking her clothes for any juice stains. "You nearly ruined my shirt!" Looking over, she saw she'd been the one to splatter someone - the bits of pulp that had flown at her now covered Ty's jacket.

Biting her lip, the psychic cringed. Ty hadn't appeared to find her abilities impressive yesterday, and he certainly wouldn't today. "Uh, here," she said, passing him a napkin. Between this and the Oran Berry incident with Hammer, it seemed she had a knack for splatting fruit all over people.

Amber Pine

Mesalon Pokecentre

@Typical @Zanavy

Neither Aedre's initial silence, nor her forced smile, had escaped Amber's notice. The battle may just have been for practice purposes, but both trainers knew the stakes of this journey were higher than mere competition. After yesterday, a loss would probably affect Aedre more than she let on.

Heading into the Pokemon centre alongside her, Amber nodded at her comment. "Yep, and remember no matter the outcome, our Pokemon are going to be just that little bit stronger for it," she reminded Aedre. "Plus it's a learning curve for everyone involved. Got to keep those type immunities in mind."

Once she'd gotten her Pokemon healed, she let out Larimar and Tacita, keeping Almandine safely in her capsule for now. Tacita perched on Amber's shoulder, while Larimar crawled across the room, fixated on the trash can for some reason. Amber stared as, in front of the Anorith's face, a tiny orange orb formed and winked out. "Hm? Larimar, what..." The sphere materialised again, larger this time, taking on the shape of a jagged rock and flying into the air. It dropped into the trash can, bursting on impact. Some smaller stones rattled against the inside, while others shot over the edge.

"Riiith!" Larimar scuttled back as the can shook and toppled, spilling trash everywhere. Amber stood in awe. Then, she set about clearing up the mess, glancing wide-eyed at the fossil Pokemon as she did so.

"A new move, huh? And a Rock type one at that? Impressive!" she commented, righting the bin. "Congratulations, though got to say it's best to practice new moves outside. Otherwise... That happens." The Anorith lowered her head. "Don't worry, you should still be proud of yourself," Amber continued, then checked her Pokedex. Sure enough, Larimar had learned her first Rock type move, Smack Down.

"So it makes airborne Pokemon vulnerable to Ground type moves," the researcher read aloud, wandering towards the cafeteria and glancing at Aedre. "Hm, well Flying has a disadvantage against Rock anyway, but in a double battle, that's got to be pretty useful. And apparently it's not just Flying types who are affected... Ah!"

Not watching her step, she skidded in something slippery, gripping a table with her free hand to keep from falling. Steadying herself, she looked down at the pulpy orange juice all over the floor, then at the chopped up fruit on the table. Ty stood nearby with his Scyther, as did a rather embarrassed-looking Sophia.

Amber didn't complain about the mess like some others did. Instead, that look of fascination lit up her face. "Ohh, is this a training session?" she asked, noting the juice on the bug's blades, and the similarly sliced apple. "We were going to head to the gym, but you wouldn't mind if I watched for a while?"

She turned to Aedre. "You ok with that?"

“Yeah,” Aedre agreed, her voice soft. Amber was right that she should look past her loss and focus on the benefits of the situation, but an ugly feeling weighed down on her all the same. Still, she kept up a vague smile as she followed Amber and her Pokemon back to the Pokemon Center, healing her Pokemon and releasing Little when she’d done so.

“Hey, Little. You feeling better?”

In response, Little fluttered onto her shoulder, chirping and ruffling his feathers.

Aedre smiled, then turned around when there came a crashing sound. It seemed Larimar had simply knocked over a trash can, but a statement from Amber informed her that it was more than that.

“Congratulations! That’s one more useful move in your arsenal,” Aedre said, grinning. It was a bit easier to be positive now that their battle was physically and mentally behind them, and she chose to focus on that. The momentary distraction of her thoughts, however, prevented her from noticing the growing puddle until Amber had slipped in it.

“Oh! Are you alright?” she asked, eyes wide as she looked to the source of the orange liquid. Amber was quicker on the uptake, recognizing the scene to be a training session as Aedre herself pondered how much work would go into cleaning the mess up. Orange juice was sticky, pulpy, and utterly… messy.

“Of course! It’d be a privilege to watch a Scyther as skilled as yours,” she said, smiling when she heard Amber's suggestion. “And, if you don’t mind, I’d like to take some notes while watching too! Blades are blades, and notes could be helpful for when I’m training Dee, my Honedge.”
