Sorry to join a dogpile, especially as someone who isn't even in the game... But the amount of AI art in the thread is hampering my will to join. At the very least I have no intention of reading or interacting with anything that uses gen AI.

I gotta agree with @Roman, as much as that hurts, they're just reference images the main medium is written. Unless it becomes important to the story nobody will really be thinking about cape colour, or elbow and kneepads.

It's awkward cause this entire genre of writing exists upon the back of creators, and obviously we're not going to commission art for a hobby but I just think using AI is 'icky'.

If its that much of an issue, I can just sub in Jason from JLU then.

However, to my knowledge, Arthur Curry as a child doesn't exist so what is your alternative in that case?

AI art pisses me the frick off, man.

The use of AI for personal use is completely fine… though I do feel pretty awkward about its use in play-by-post role-playing. I try to avoid it personally, but as someone who has appropriated images comic artists (or anime artists in the case of my other games) to frame my own characters and stories I feel like I’d be a bit hypocritical criticizing anyone using AI.

It does unnerve me, though.

Picking literally any random blond kid that can be stuck on a sheet and then immediately forgotten about. No one is looking at sheets on their second monitor while reading posts to get a visual reference. It's a written medium. Everyone's characters look how I decide they look in my head when I read the post. At best, faceclaims are a signpost for the key differences (in this case, 'this character is a child'). I can count on my hands the number of times I've needed to refer back to a sheet after it's been accepted.

So what you're saying is that to satisfy you I have to both stop using AI and also stop using banner art with my Arthur posts.

I find the use of AI art at all is creatively compromising, I can understand the frustration with finding art considering my favorite character is a D-lister who hasn't had an ongoing since the 80s so art is at a premium there. You can just as easily go digging for art that looks like what you're going for rather than go straight to AI. God knows I used to spend hours looking for character art in non-canon RPs before.

"So you're saying if I can't use AI I can't use any art at all ever?" No bro literally the exact opposite. Use anything but AI. Look how many post banners and images used by others aren't AI (Mattmanganon is on notice as well for that Shazam abomination). We've done this shit for YEARS without AI. Your latest post uses a banner of a city coastline. You telling me you can't find that without using AI?

I don't agree. I fail to see how use of AI is any more compromising than Fair Use of a copyrighted character, but I understand that we are not going to agree on this.

If its the Robin sheet that is the problem, I'm happy to address that and we can move on.

I like what I've been doing with Arthur, including the art, and I find the art actually helps me in maintaining momentum. So I thank you all for your opinions, but I have no plans to change what I'm doing there.

Personally, I don't have any strong feelings either way in regards to the use of AI art within this context. I can understand people's aversion, especially in the wider context of the conversation around AI at the moment, but I personally think Bounce's use of it has been transformative, and with Spawn and Aquaboy I can see the use in a tool like this for creating strong visuals for characters who don't have any to go off of. While others may not care as much about visuals either on the character sheet or in banners, it does personally help me at times to visualise the stylistic differences in appearances to the canon characters. Whether this be through an AI image or a fan design, etc.

My only strong objection to the use of AI would be using it to generate text for your posts, which I don't believe anyone has done here (although I'm probably not the best at spotting it if there is any). We're here to craft a story together, and write together, not with a robot.

All that being said, I'm happy to weigh in on this, but honestly as a GM I don't think such a hot-button issue is something I should have final say over, rather its something we as a group can decide on. It seems people have very strong opinions on this, but I'd like to keep things civil here. I know a lot of you have known each other a lot longer than I have, so I'd just ask we give each other the benefit of the doubt when we're arguing our case here, whichever side of the argument you fall on.

Look, I am just surprised none of the AI images so far aren't tinted piss-strained yellow yet. But seriously, thank you for speaking up Roman; it's been bothering me since all of the AI-rendered Jason Todd, Aqualad, Shazam, and now Robin have been ugly as hell (it can't even do freckles right, for crying out loud!). And it isn't a matter of satisfying someone, our planet is melting whenever someone uses generative AI for whatever, and some poor mom's water & electricity bill has gone up $500 because of (my personal opinion here) deeply selfish and quite frankly lazy reasons.

However, to my knowledge, Arthur Curry as a child doesn't exist so what is your alternative in that case?

Sometimes you have to just improvise! Here's an image made by an actual artist of Arthur Curry Jr that you could easily pass off as Arthur himself (crop out the parents of the picture and boom).

Like seeing ads, talking with 'customer service representitives', clicking through chat bot options when seeking service support, and scrolling through the news, AI art and text has long been added to the list of 'things that give me psychic damage and erode my will to carry on going in this fucked-up hellscape of a planet'. Do with that information what you will, even regardless of the environmental and direct human damage you do when engaging with these apocalypse-ushering soul-extraction machines.

Assume that's clear enough for my views on AI as well.
