7:00 AM - Friday, June 13th 1980 - Lava Lake trailhead, BC, Canada

The morning was cool and there was a slight mist in the air as the state vehicles, or in a few precious cases private cars, pulled up into the gravel lot. This lot had the trail head that would take the group of delinquents to the old camp grounds.

An older man, with a large pot belly, sun darkened skin, and well worn hiking boots waited for them at the trail head. He wore hiking appropriate clothes and dark sunglasses. He was probably in his 40s or 50s.

Once everyone had left the vehicles, gathered their packs and the cop had driven away, the older man introduced himself.

“I’m Dobbs.” He watched as the state vehicle’s dust started to settle. “This hike is long, if we do it quickly we should be at the campgrounds in about fourty-five minutes. No dilly-dallying, I have no desire to be here when the sun goes down.” He turned and started up the trail.

Emily didn’t have a car. They were expensive and the bus system, or her own two feet, were her usual mode of transportation. She probably could drive if push came to shove, but she had never gotten her license. Marco, also didn’t have his license, so the pair of them had been driven up to the trail head by the cop. He was stern and didn’t talk the whole drive. Em and Marco hadn’t talked much either because of how awkward it felt.

Getting out of the vehicle and pulling on the oversized hiking backpack Emily didn’t struggle much. She had done a few long hikes, and even a couple of overnight backpacking trips over the years. It was one of her favorite ways of seeing the country. It was why when she had been assigned this community service job she had put down that she had wilderness survival skills and lots of hiking experience.

She looked at the group and was surprised to see that Aster, Marco’s friend from UBC, was also there. Em nudged Marco, and nodded her head indicating where Aster was. He was driving a ridiculously ostentatious car. There was another car, a jeep, with a trio of people piling out. She didn’t know any of them. At least they were more sensible. Em was not surprised by Aster deciding to drive that car here. He would probably have a conniption fit once he realized it had dust on it.

”Aster really drove that thing all the way here. How much do you think he paid for gas?”

The man who introduced himself as Dobbs started hiking without much fanfare. Emily followed him, she had a little bit of a bounce in her step excited for a nice hike. She hoped that all this community service would at least be fun. If the others were cool she figured they’d make their own fun. They had a week until kids started showing up to get the campgrounds ready for them. Em had plans to do some scavenger hunts and neat hikes for the kids.

As the Jeep got nearer to the meeting point, Demi could see the service vehicle of ‘the law’ up ahead. Seemed some others were joining them for this little camp excursion. That or the fuzz really wanted to be present to make sure they all made it to uphold their end of community service. He wasn't going to let any it ruin his vibe however, still sitting up in his seat as he belted out to David Bowie. An empty bottle of Ribena in his left hand, his right one up in the air hand wide open as if he was singing to the Starman himself.

”🎶There's a Starman
Waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a Starman…🎶”

His right hand was missing his usual light blue wrapped bandana that he used as a hanky. Though Demi knew exactly where it had gone and hoped that it would come true a bit later. It seemed that two others were there with packs either on their backs or at their sides and some old man standing there. Maybe that was the owner of the Camp? Lame he expected some sort of Daddy not…whatever he was. Demi waited for the final notes of the song to end before finally hoping out of the car (literally) and then reaching into the back to grab his duffle. ”C'mon slowpokes. We're burning daylight and I will not be stranded on a mountain at night.” He leaned against the CJ7 waiting for the other two to get out as he flashed a quick peace sign over to the other two people that appeared to be around his age.

Another car eventually joined them, fancy ass shit that didn't belong up in the mountains. Maybe whoever this person was was like a Nepo Baby of the Camp. Or the one Bankrolling it. Either way Demi made his way over towards Dobbs. ”See, Dobbs here has some sense – wait what happens when the sun goes down?” Demetri asked. What the hell were up in these mountains that had the old man saying that? Or maybe in his old age he couldn't see well in the night.

Ezekiel pulled into the small, gravelled parking lot, belting the Bowie lyrics right along with Demetri. It was a crime not to sing to Bowie, and well, they were trying to be upstanding citizens now. He shut the car off after the conclusion of the song, laughing. Thank God they were finally here. It had been the most awkward and tense last twenty minutes until Bowie came on.

Zeke slipped his keys into his pocket before he did a quick tie of the blue bandana Demi had slipped him around his right wrist. He glanced at Demetri, smiling shyly before he focused on grabbing his and Nancy's stuff out of the back.

He grabbed his guitar case, looking at the others. There were several RCMP officers milling about and a couple random people. Zeke frowned. Was this going to be some summer camp for delinquents where he and the counselors ended up being role models for troubled youth? Fuck that.

Zeke shouldered his bag and guitar case, carrying Nancy's with a free hand. ”We okay?” he asked her, while they had a moment.

Nancy lifted her sunglasses up, repositioning them so that way they were perched on top of her hair. "Yeah, why wouldn't we be?" she asked him, before punching him on the arm affectionately.

Ezekiel grinned and nodded. ”Of course. Good.” he kissed the side of her head, feeling better. ”Let's go get this over with then.” He walked over to the group, standing next to Demetri and took in the group.

They all seemed to be around the same age and looked cool enough. Dobbs seemed a little weird, but maybe that just had more to do with being in charge of a bunch of university aged kids.

Zeke looked at Demetri when he asked what happens after the sun goes down. ”We're in the middle of the woods. In the mountains. There's wild animals all over the place.”

Windows rolled down and Queen blaring, Aster drove with all the enthusiasm he danced with: the complete and utter disregard for anyone around him. Why should other people's safety concerns ruin his day? They shouldn't and he'd happily claim the swerving tracks in the dirt road he barreled down. He still didn't agree that he deserved this banishment to the rustic backwoods. Aster was very mindful, very demure, only slashing that bastard's tires. If he'd known he was going to be punished for doling out justice, Aster would have smashed in the asshole's windshield and his side mirrors. Baseball bats were plenty cheap and readily available at a mall after all. Bastard better hope Aster doesn't catch up with him.

However, dwelling on little, shortsighted men didn't suit him very much and Aster swerved into the gravel lot and slammed on his brakes just in time to avoid his precious baby turning into a heap of scrap metal. Well, all's well that ends well and Aster unclipped his seat belt, paused at opening the door, and took a second to check himself in the mirror. As always, everything was perfect, the epitome of human beauty he was regularly told. Of course, they were wrong. He was the epitome of godly beauty and while it may as well be a sin to suggest anything else, Aster thought their quaint compliments were adorable enough to offer forgiveness.

He was just too kind.

He permitted himself a few more moments in the mirror before he tore himself away lest his own beauty bewitch him and stepped out into the wilderness. He slid his aviator's glasses on and stretched, shaking out the soreness of sitting for too long, and surveyed his new surroundings. A quaint little forest, far away from any trappings of modern society, a fat and crotchety old man, a pair of siblings, a lesbian, and two familiar faces. What an eclectic group of people.

“Marco! Emily. At least some tolerable folk made it out here. Aster greeted them as he pulled out two large leather suitcases, one slightly smaller than the other. “I wasn't really certain what we would need so I made sure to bring plenty. Just a few outfits, six or seven pairs of shoes, a full face kit, and definitely some exfoliating products because if I find even the threat of a break out because of this nonsense, well let's just say property damage will be the least of their concerns.”

Aster looked Dobbs up and down over the rim of his glasses. “Have you ever considered a little less beer for that belly? A few weeks and we could even get you into stripes.”

Marco DePaulo

Location: Camp Lava Lake Trail Head

Marco had tried to sleep on the ride up to the Camp, but found he couldn't at all. Everything kept just playing over and over again in his head. The accusation, the arrest, the trial, the sentencing, Em's arrest, then being sent off to camp. Everything was playing over and over like the record left on the player on repeat. He was still waiting to hear back from the school to know if he was even going to be admitted back for another semester, given he had a criminal record now. His whole future was in jeopardy, just because someone didn't like the color of his skin.

At least he still had someone on his side. His Em, his love, his eternal partner. He couldn't believe that she had gotten herself arrested just to join him on this community service for the summer. He was pretty sure her mother was going to ban him from the house for a bit once she had gotten arrested, but well, Em had pleaded her case. So, they were together, riding in the car to Camp Lava Lake.

Once they got there, Marco hauled his duffels out of the car. Just because they were going to be around pre-teens, and teens for the summer didn't mean he wasn't going to look nice. Of course, one of the duffels also had some fun time stuff, for when he and Em could sneak off, or maybe some of the other counselors.

He blinked in surprised as Em nudged him and he saw Aster's car there. Aster was going to be working with them that summer? He hadn't said anything before. He snorted a bit at Em's comment about the gas, knowing full well Aster could afford it, but it also probably cost quite a lot to fill up that tank.

"Aster, darling, what are you doing here? I thought you'd be off traveling this summer. Don't tell me you also accepted a deal of some sort. ...What did you do?" Marco walked over to Aster, after kissing Em on the cheek. He knew full well that Aster wouldn't be somewhere like here unless it was for similar reasons to him and Em. He did eye Aster's luggage, and chuckled softly. "Aster, you can't threaten property damage, not if you're here for that already. Is that what you did? Oh Aster." Marco had a bad feeling that Aster had done something to someone's property, and that's fully why he was there.

He groaned internally as his friend insulted the man that was there to escort them and took a deep breath, and then looked the other three over. He then noticed the hankies in the darker haired boy's pocket and nearly growled lowly at that. Oh, he was down for fun times it seemed. He would have to chat with Em about that later, as per usual. He was fully sure they would separate them by gender, which was boring, but that didn't mean he couldn't have some fun.

"We should get going. I really don't want to be up here when the sun sets. As he said, wild animals are around." He teased as he walked over to Em and planted a kiss on her neck.

Nancy rocked back slightly on her feet, taking in the scenery. She wasn’t particularly looking forward to teaching children - and she was skeptical that this camp wouldn’t have some sort of agenda behind it, given its government ties. Neither was she thrilled about the idea of being in the woods with her brother and Demi, given the way they could barely keep their hands off each other when she was in the car with them. But she did like forests - loved them, really. The energy here was different from the city - more grounded, more intentioned. She had the sudden urge to take off her shoes and curl her toes into the dirt, to abandon the trail and chart a new one, to see how many constellations she could name in the stars at night.

The allure of nature was shattered, however, as the most ostentatious car she’d ever seen pulled up, Queen blasting. Her eyes widened and she whistled appreciatively. It was ridiculous, but beautiful at the same time - not as beaten down as the jeep, and maybe not as loved, but still stunning. The boy driving it, she could’ve done without. She’d already clocked the fact that there was only one other girl here. Hopefully her resting facial expression of general annoyance and judgment kept the boys from thinking she was too approachable. And hopefully they were all as bent as Demi was.

”Bitchin’ ride,” she offered, however, before returning her attention to the people she knew - to Demi and Zeke. As Demi asked what happened when it got dark, she chuckled slightly. It was a new moon, too - a time for setting intentions, for new beginnings - and more practically for them, a time without any light. ”That’s when the cultists come out to bleed you dry. They’ll blame it on wild animals to keep the locals from getting spooked.”

She paused for a moment, before eyeing Dobbs.

“We don’t need to worry about cannibals, at least.”

Dobbs had started walking, not checking to make sure the group had followed him. Stragglers were not his concern. They could follow him or not. Dobbs had his assignment and he would do the bare minimum of that.

“Wild animals are certainly a concern up here in the mountains.”

Dobbs did not slow down, or wait. He had started walking. Keeping up was up to the basically teens that had gotten assigned this task. His face didn’t show what he was thinking, at least not until Aster insulted him. He did not look angry though, he looked almost sad for Aster. He paused in his relentless hike and stood in front of Aster.

“You do realize that I am in charge of your situation here. I do not care for your sass. That is strike one. You have two options while here at this camp. The first option is to do your assigned tasks, keep your head down, and go home with your record clear. The second option is to not do those things and have to deal with all the legal ramifications you were trying to avoid in the first place.”

He started walking again.

“As for your work here. You’ll have cabins to clean up and stay in at the camp grounds. I recommend you start with cleaning those out. I have a list of tasks that all need to be done before next week when the kids and other counselors show up. I’ll be coming up each morning to check on you and make sure you’re on pace to getting everything done on time. If I catch wind of you slacking off you’ll be reported.

“During the day if you realize you need anything make a list and give it to me. I’ll bring it up the next day. I stay in the town near here so it doesn’t take me long to get here. I’ll be at the campsite around seven am. The sun sets a bit after 9 pm. I strongly recommend that you all are safely tucked inside around then.”

Em smiled at Aster as she mentally judged his choices of suitcases. He was going to be suffering very quickly if that was what he had brought. A couple of people had brought duffle bags, which was a bit better. No one else had a hiking backpack. They were all going to be uncomfortable by the time they arrived at the camp grounds.

”How are you?” She asked Aster. Em kissed Marco back happily. She didn’t blush. Em saw no reason for that.

Em winced when Aster insulted Dobbs. She was not surprised when he gave Aster a dressing down. The warnings about night time were getting increasingly ominous.

”What happened here?” She asked quietly. Em was near him, having no issue keeping up with his steady pace.

Dobbs glanced at her. “You don’t want to know. It’ll just freak you out.”

”If we don’t know we can’t be prepared for it.” She countered. He sighed and shrugged.

“Fine, this is the third time in this century that someone has tried to resurrect this place. Every time someone tries there are horrible deaths. Years ago, there was a town here. Elias Ashwood was their gravedigger, and after sickness killed his family he went mad with grief. The villagers burned his house to burn out the sickness. He buried his wife and daughter’s bones under the old oak and then he hunted the people who did it. Buried them himself. The town tried to fight back, but they only killed him by dumping him in the lake. He should’ve stayed buried, but he didn’t."

Dobbs leans closer to Emily, voice dropping to a whisper.

"Some nights, he comes back. You’ll hear the scrape of metal across stone, that’s his shovel, digging. The ground will shift under your feet, like it wants to swallow you. Chains rattle, even when the wind’s still. And if you hear footsteps behind you don’t turn. Don’t answer. He’s patient. And he doesn’t forgive. Most of the people who stayed here after dark never saw sunrise. Don’t be like them. Stay together, stay inside after dark and for God’s sake, stay away from the oak and the lake."

”I thought you were a serious person. I guess not.” Emily rolled her eyes and dropped back some to walk with Marco.

Ezekiel tensed when another vehicle showed up, close to crashing into the Jeep. Zeke would have been charged with assult if his only mode of transportation had been hit. The kid who got out of the vehicle even looked self-entitled, but Zeke couldn’t deny there was something…appealing about the swagger. Wait. What?

Ezekiel felt flushed and turned back around, seeing Dobbs making his way onto the trail. He put the guitar on his back and grabbed his and his sister’s bags before following along. Until they stopped to tell ghost stories.

Zeke swallowed, shifting uncomfortably. Okay, that was a little more intense than just wild animals in the woods. Nancy subjected Zeke to all sorts of scary movies. And he hated them all. The idea that there was some legend of a crazy dude in the woods, going berserk about people being on his land, did not make Zeke eager to complete his community service.

”If people keep dying…maybe stop trying to revamp it? I mean. There are hundreds of summer camps. It is BC after all,” Zeke stated.

Once Zeke had gotten close to him, Demi felt his hand twinge. A twitch of the middle finger reaching out towards Zeke's hand as if he wanted to hold it. Any chance of acting on it was squashed as Nancy's voice reminded him that she was, as always, ever present. ”Woodland creatures I can handle Z. If that's all that there is to worry about then I'm not exactly too worried.” Another person joined their merry band of Misfits, some guy named Aster who came barreling in squawking Queen. It seemed the other two were Marco and Emily. There were quite a bit of guys gathered here, though Demetri only had eyes for one, Zeke. Although the other two weren't half bad either.

Nancy tried to scare him, adding on that the animal attacks weren't the real threat but more so some cultists. ”OoooOooOOOOo. Nerds in robes. So scary Nance.” Demi joked as he rolled his eyes just moments before Old Man Dobbs gave Aster the lay down. He tried hard to bite back a laugh. Served him right for being rude to someone just doing their job. He kept pace along with everyone else until Dobbs stopped to tell Demi an absolutely insane and horrifying tale. What the FUCK did he mean that a vengeful spirit was rampaging about killing people who attempted to revamp the camp. ”OK, are we all just not gonna ask? Cuz I'll ask it. You mentioned cleaning the Cabins, does that mean the blood and gore of the last who died trying or just general dirt from years of abandonment?”

Aster didn't bother acknowledging the little man on a power trip beyond a bored stare. He was just another washed up want-to-be, regretting not going to school and actually doing something with his life and so what little interest Aster had in fixing… well, everything about him vanished. Especially when Marco was suddenly so focused on the trio blessed with Aster's presence for the foreseeable future. Aster cocked a judgmental eyebrow at Marco at whatever noise he made and followed his eyes to the hankies sticking out of one's pocket and another wrapped around the other's wrist and…

“Oh for heaven's-” Aster could not roll his eyes far enough to express his exasperation. Aster had higher standards than what his peers could offer. Drunken, backroom fumbling was not what his body deserved nor something he had any interest wasting his time on so his experience was lacking, but he wouldn't lie and say he wasn't interested. Anyone trying to fly under the radar in certain circles knew the hanky code regardless of their current interests and Aster wanted to smack Marco on the nose with a roll of newspaper since he was acting like a dog in rut. Aster took a second look at the two hanging from the back pocket and had to double take.

“I was nearly certain the black haired one was a butch.” Aster muttered to himself, before turning back into the conversation with a long put off sigh. “Well, I certainly would have been touring the French countryside by now - I'd wanted to take the last Night Ferry trip before they closed but…” He gestured around the area as they walked. “I was informed, in no uncertain terms, that I would find my way out of this mess myself or else. And when I asked what the other option was, we'll, I didn't get a response so I decided I'd grace the back country with my presence after all.”

Aster narrowed his eyes at Dobb's revelation. Aster was perfection personified and while he cared for his looks more than anything, he wasn't an idiot. Five out of six of them, and Aster was willing to put money on the girl made it six, could be served up as a sweet fruit salad and now that he knew its blood history, Aster was more than a little suspicious someone wanted them gone and buried. Homophobia really knew no limits. He'd make sure the twins realized that once they had the space to themselves. Straight people would always find creative ways to get rid of the weirdos however they could.

“Unless they left the remains laying around in a locked cabin, wildlife probably did most of the cleaning. Probably just old blood stains and as long as we're given reasonable supplies, it'll take a bit of elbow work but it'll all come out.” Aster offered hanky boy. He didn't know if anyone introduced themselves, but he certainly wasn't listening to anyone but himself earlier. Aster couldn't resist chuckling at the cannibal comment - their captor certainly deserved worse for turning down his assistance.

“What supplies do we have already? Is there a running stock or do we have a random assortment of things that hopefully aren't past their expiration? Am I expecting generic or name brand and will you get exactly what I put on the list or an approximation? And who is funding it, a govement spendong card or personal funds?

So Dobbs wasn't going to be here at night. Interesting. Nancy didn't have any immediate plans for shenanigans or mischief, but hearing that their government babysitter would be gone for almost twelve hours a night presented a number of opportunities. A 9 PM curfew was brutal. But without enforcement... what was to stop Nancy from doing some nighttime exploration if she so desired? She could handle herself when it came to animals. And like most teenagers, she'd never considered the possibility of her own death too deeply. It was just a shame that it was a new moon - a moonlit hike sounded amazing.

And as much as she was superstitious, hearing Dobbs recant his story about horrible deaths... It was hard to really take it seriously. It seemed more like the sort of story you'd tell to freak out kids and get them to stay in bed, not anything real with any merit to it. She'd seen slasher flicks with more compelling plots. "How'd they die, then?" Nancy asked. "Burned alive? Stabbed? Drowned? And who? Was it some drunk who wandered off the trail at night or counselors or what?"

Demi seemed to be on a similar wavelength to her. She couldn't help but laugh at his question, as to whether the grizzled remains of the previous inhabitants were still in the cabins. The fancy car boy didn't seem particularly worried about this - just remarking they'd need to get the blood out and it wouldn't be too hard. She cocked an eyebrow at that comment. "Do you do that often, then? Clean up blood? Driving a car like that?"

Marco was trying to keep pace to Em, but it was a bit hard. She loved this kind of stuff, and loved going for hikes when she could. Marco was more city savvy, and could probably walk more on the sidewalks for longer. The rough trail was throwing him off, and his hiking boots were new and not quite broken in yet. So, he was silently suffering, and that was probably going to set the tone for a lot of this summer.

He looked over at Aster as he explained what had happened and shook his head a bit. Sometimes he had to wonder if it was the money that made him that way, or if it was just the way Aster was born. They were friends, yes, but sometimes the things that came out of his mouth really made Marco want to correct him. However, he brushed that aside when he heard Dobbs talk about the history of the camp, and the murders.

"Wait wait. So this place has failed multiple times and yet someone still has the bright idea of trying to make a camp of it again? And they decided to make a pet project of it too? Somehow I doubt a vengeful spirit had anything to do with it. My guess is the location. The fact that it is in the middle of nowhere, there's nothing nearby to help keep this place alive. That's why it fails. You need like shops and a good supply chain." Marco sighed as Em moved back close to him. He tugged her in close and wrapped an arm around her.

"So we sneaking out to the lake later then?" He whispered to her, and chuckled softly as they walked the path together. He really did silently hope they didn't have to clean up blood and gore, because if they did, he was going to take the prison time before he got any of that under his nails.

@KazAlkemi@Achronum@kittyluna45@Morose@Trainerblue192

Dobbs shrugged a little. “I’m not the one deciding to try to open this place. The first time it was during the original construction. Mostly everything went fine until the last week of construction. The investors were getting antsy and added a night crew. Three men disappeared on the first night. By the fourth night, the crew refused to work there anymore, and almost half of the crew had disappeared. When they found the bodies, it was while digging the foundation for the last couple of planned cabins. Fifteen fresh bodies were buried together. Their deaths were all caused by blunt force trauma.

“The second attempt was a decade or so later, the land had been sold in an auction sight unseen. The new owners didn’t look into what happened and got the campgrounds cleaned up and opened. The first deaths were a pair of campers. The counselor said they had gone to the bathroom and never came back. A search party was sent out, but they weren’t found. Not until more campers went missing. After several failures to find the missing kids parents showed up and took everyone home. The search parties stayed. They were smart and didn’t go searching at night. The original campers were found buried together. Both had died by blunt force trauma.

“Now the camp has changed hands again. Despite warnings, the new owners are trying to get it up and running. They made the deal with the government because they want this to be a low-income camp option for kids. Hopefully, that answered some of your questions. As for where the money is coming from, don’t worry about it. That isn’t your problem. I’ll bring what I can. I do not promise you’ll get a certain brand or anything like that. The nearest town doesn’t have a lot of options. There are supplies there already; you’re not going to be scrubbing blood out of the floorboards or anything. I’ve done a few runs of supplies already, so you have fresh wood, nails, and cleaning supplies.” Dobbs didn’t slow down the whole time he was talking.

Emily grinned and nodded. She absolutely was looking forward to this now. She figured Dobbs’ story was to scare them. There wasn’t going to be any supervision, as far as she could tell. Dobbs had said that he wasn’t staying there.

She didn’t particularly care for the conversation. Em didn’t necessarily believe anything Dobbs was saying, at least in regards to this Elias character. Bad luck caused stories, and nothing he had mentioned had included some supernatural being from beyond. The campers could have been a local psycho or a bear. She couldn’t explain everyone being buried, but maybe the bear had put them there for later.

Of the group, there were three that Emily didn’t know. No one had introduced themselves yet. She decided she'd introduce herself once Dobbs had left them alone. Dobbs hadn’t even done more than a headcount. He seemed to have little to no fucks given in this situation.

”How much manual labor are we expected to do? You said a week between now and when the kids arrive. We’re supposed to clean and repair everything? Alone?” She didn’t think Aster knew how to do manual labor. The others she couldn’t judge. It wasn’t like she knew how to do electrical work or anything.

“There are some repairs needed. I’ll be here during the day and doing the tradeswork. You lot can work on cleaning, helping prep the grounds, and making sure everything is in working order. If you find a faucet that doesn’t turn on let me know. I hope you’re smart enough to figure out what you can and can’t do without me. Though these questions make me think I might be overestimating a group of delinquents."

”Reasonable supplies and elbow – are you daft on purpose or by upbringing? Wood is a porous material, which I assume these Cabins are made of, and unless they've been lacquered to hell and back its more than likely soaked up any blood that's been left to sit. No amount of elbow grease is gettin’ that out I'll tell you that.” Demi threw his hands up in exasperation. Already he was starting to like the prick less and less. The others seemed to have their own questions and words of protest. Though it appeared Dobbs was mostly here as a ferryman, though whether that was to a Camp or the Afterlife Demi was becoming increasingly less sure about.

The history of this place was grim, and it didn't sit well with him that they'd just send some teens with B&E charges to their deaths. A part of him didn't want to believe it, to assume its some sort of scared straight program, but another part kept telling him not to dismiss it. ”Depending on what we've got we could use some ammonia. Cabins are probably grimy and need a bit of a degreasing. Bleach could always help too for both a disinfectant and to help with nasty stains we may face. If you're working on the actual trades work i wont bother asking for anything on that front I guess. Might need some fresh coats of paint or something. Guess we'll see when we get there.”

“Yes. I'm sure none of us can question your skills in handling… wood. Or your friend's, I suppose.” Aster glanced at the hankies over the edge of his glasses. “I don't doubt your hands have known plenty of splinters and they'll probably know many more after this conquest.” Aster said as he glanced pointedly at Zeke. He wasn't certain what set the cretin off, but Aster certainly wasn't going to let him talk however he wanted to.

Still, Aster was glad Em brought up labor because as much as he wanted this to be perfect (He was involved so it would have to be!), Aster dreaded having to actually lift anything. He swam to keep his silhouette sharp and pointed and lithe, not to haul logs and ratty furniture. He'd sooner let this would be killer take him than break a nail. “Excellent. I will be happy to catalog all issues in the place, though I have a sneaking suspicion that it will be an incredibly short one: Everything. If it has been abandoned for as long as it you claim, I doubt anything will be usable.” Aster pointed out in all seriousness. He wasn't certain if Dobbs was testing them, but he appreciated the pace. Swimming was all cardio and the speed was perfect. He didn't have to slow.himself down because the Straights couldn't figure out how to put.one foot in front of the other.

“And the sleeping situation? What does that look like? I have to start visualizing where to put my things.”

Marco DePaulo

Marco had mostly tuned out Dobbs until he mentioned delinquents. Marco's smile vanished at that point and he tugged Em in closer at that point. Only she of the group knew the full truth of why and how he was there. He knew trying to argue with Dobbs would be pointless. They were all 'delinquents' to him. Just a group of fuck ups and failures, there to work off time. They weren't really there to be official counselors. That's why they were there a week earlier, to clean up and set up the camp.

"Cleaning I can do, but yeah. I'm going to imagine that we're going to need all the supplies if this place has been abandoned for so long, unless they left like Comet, Clorox, pledge and vinegar and baking powder." Marco sighed as he started to run through the mental list of what he tended to use at home. Since his dad was usually busy, he had done a lot of the cleaning growing up, as had Em.

"I really also hope there's a working stove... I'd hate to think that all we're going to eat for the next few days is cold cuts and salads... wait. What is the food situation like? Since it is just us, are we going to have to make and cook our own food?" Marco doubted that Aster knew how to cook, even less how to make his own sandwiches. The others there, maybe? He didn't want to assume anything. He really hoped that they would be left something to cook or eat, otherwise he was going to turn right back, consequences be damned.

Ezekiel Kel

Blood, cleaning, stabbing, vanished, blunt force trauma….buried together. Zeke was getting more and more anxious and more and more nauseated the longer they talked about the campsite and what happened there. He stared at his sister, half tempted to elbow her to shut-up. Honestly, her fascination with wanting to know how everyone died was not helping.

Zeke slowed a fraction in his walking. If he just ran back, drove off and came back to pick up Nancy in a week, would he get off with a different type of community service? Zeke fell into a debate with himself over the idea when he heard Aster’s voice sound a little more clear and a little more pointed.

Zeke looked over, seeing Aster looking at the shared bandanas with Demetri before he looked at Zeke pointedly. Zeke flushed with embarrassment, rubbing the back of his neck with his right hand. He glanced at Demi, who was fixated on cleaning. Zeke didn’t picture Demi as the clean freak.

Then, food was mentioned. Despite the nausea, Zeke’s stomach rumbled. Ah food. Zeke assumed food would be provided. He didn’t think they were being sent up to set up the entire campsite. What if they were supposed to bring their own food? Dammit!

While Dobbs did answer her question about how everyone had died, she decided that she didn't like him. Anything that could be done to torment him going forward was then going to be considered a win. Fortunately, that didn't seem to be hard to do. Just asking questions was enough to irritate him. Of course, his answers only prompted more questions. Fifteen people had gone missing one year, just to turn up in the foundation? That caught her attention more than a missing pair of campers. Kids could be dumb. Adults could also be dumb - but fifteen? If this place had such violent history, why was the government interested in sending them here? Her expression narrowed. If Zeke and she died here, their mother wouldn't recover.

"And what do you believe happened to them?" Nancy asked, picking up the pace a bit to match Dobbs. "If you believe there's some sort of killer freak out here, why are you doing this? You'd be complicit at best. Unless you don't believe in that shit. And you're just trying to scare us," she glanced at her brother, looking to see if this had unsettled him. The talk of cleaning supplies and manual labor didn't interest her as much. The others seemed to have a good plan in place to execute, and she wasn't a stranger to having to help clean things - albeit a much smaller space.

As the subject turned to the food situation, her mind drifted briefly to hunting - to the archery range - and then to injuries. It wasn't the conversation topic she wanted to stay on, but it was one that needed to be asked. "What about first aid - medical supplies? Emergency radios? If something happens in the middle of the night?" Like a bear pretending to be a serial killer.

Or more practically - like if I have a seizure.

7:45 AM - Friday, June 13th 1980 - Lava Lake trail, BC, Canada

@KazAlkemi@Achronum@kittyluna45@Morose@Trainerblue192

For the second time this hike Dobbs paused. He stared at Demetri. The look on his face was one of astonishment. As if he had just heard the stupidest thing ever, which was likely considering what Demetri had said.

“Do you have rocks for brains,” Dobbs asked? “If you want to mix bleach and ammonia do me a favor and do it when I am not nominally in charge of you.” He sighed, shook his head and started walking again.

“The buildings are not in complete disrepair as all of that. But do what you want as long as you’re putting in actual work. I don’t want you to give me a list of things every day. I want to see you doing actual work.

“I’ve been here the last few weeks getting the electrical work up to code, and removing any rotted sections of flooring and ceiling I found. As for blood in the cabins I haven’t seen any. Honestly, I haven’t seen any sign of anything that fits these stories. I don’t think there is any Elias. There is proof that the kids disappeared, but in all honesty they probably were just being dumb. I haven’t seen any proof about the construction workers. Not even proof that there had been a night crew.” Dobbs shrugged a little.

“As for sleeping, there is only one cabin I think you can currently occupy. Most of the others don’t have beds. If you all want individual cabins feel free to move the beds around. Or if you all want to share the same bed together I don’t give a shit. You’re legally adults. My responsibility for you starts and ends with making sure the camp is ready at the end of next week. I will report to the RCMP if you were little shits or if you did a good enough job for your plea deals.” Dobbs did not seem to notice or care about any of the bandanas or obvious relationship things happening.

“First aid and food are both available in the main building. It has an industrial kitchen that's mostly stocked at this point. I’ve been hauling stuff up here for weeks to get it to this point. We should have some extra hands in a couple of days to help with some of the last things. The big food haul for when the campers is scheduled for Wednesday. But I’ve brought up enough food to last you the week and then some. You should have plenty to work with. If there is a big enough medical emergency there is a ham radio. Instructions are near the station. I can walk you through it if you want before I leave for the night.”

Em squeezed Marco’s hand. Knowing Dobbs’ attitude toward them was upsetting him. She was also upset by Dobbs. He was sort of an ass. First, giving them the campfire ghost story and then refuting it in the next breath practically. He seemed more irritated that he had to deal with them than happy to have help.

Em didn’t know the other girl’s name but she agreed with the sentiment. Dobbs either actually believed about the Elias story, and was now backing down from that. Or he had told them the story just to freak them out.

”Why the fuck tell us that story then?” She snapped.

Dobbs shook his head. “You asked. You said you wanted to be prepared.”

”Then be normal. Tell us some kids went missing. Or something, not some ghost story.”

“Look, I do not care if you’re out at midnight dancing naked in the lake or whatever. If you die though because you do some dumb shit in an area you don’t know in the dark. I have to answer for it. I can’t be here overnight to babysit you lot. I don’t want to babysit you. The fact that I was sent barely not-children to do this job sort of pisses me off. I should have been given a crew of competent tradesmen. So if I have to tell you a story that’ll keep you from wandering off in the middle of the night when I can’t be here then I will. Just do the job, keep yourselves safe, and in a couple of weeks you’ll be home looking back at this as just some shitty summer job. Hell you might even learn something here that you can put on your resume.”

Demi rolled his eyes as Aster spoke to him, his hands balling into fists when he brought Zeke into it. He didn’t care what people said about him, everybody loved to talk, loved to say shit and speak as if he was beneath them and that was fine. But no one got to talk like that about someone Demetri actually cared about. If he didn't know any better based solely on the outfit and daddy's car, he would've pegged the kid as a homophobe trying to be slick around a doddering old man. He reached out to try and hold Zeke's hand, but Zeke moved it to the back of his neck. ”Don't be jealous that this arcade machine is taken, find another slot to put your quarter in if you really wanna play a game.” He spat back. Between the straight couple, Nancy, and now Aster, this was going to be a long few weeks.

Marco brought up the idea of food, and Demi's stomach gave a bit of a growl. He fished out his packet of Wunderbars and cracked it open, depositing the ripped plastic into his back pocket before decidedly taking a bite. He tilted the chocolate treat towards Zeke to see if he wanted any. His Ribena had sadly been finished and he doubted Dobbs would appreciate them opening a can of beer on this hike. He startled to a stop as Dobbs fully halted in his trek to ask Demi if he was thicker than a bowl of oatmeal. For a moment, Demi wondered if Dobbs could read minds. Did he know he was thinking about drinking around him? But the old man went off about the chemicals instead.

Demetri’s posture relaxed once more, especially once the walk continued again. ”I'd love a walk-through on the Ham. Never know when you might get a herd of bears.” He decided not to weigh in on the fact that Dobbs wasn't exactly of devout faith in this tale. He'd figured as much, yet the idea of it still stuck around within Demi. He didn't like it, especially at the mention that no real sign of the murders had happened save for the graves. It was almost as if the Campgrounds wanted to forget somehow. That or to hide it for the next victims.
