When there's blood in the water, the sharks circle.

Won't you be shocked by the killer Howard the Duck application I'm putting together!

(I actually have a couple irons in the fire for real, though. We'll see if I resist the siren song or just give in.)

Howard the Duck? Who do you think you are? Byrd Man?

Nah. If I was Byrd, I'd pick some random named detective from a handful of issues of Detective Comics and then proceed to write the most gritty, unflinching examination of police brutality, notions of justice, and the human condition.

And then I'd pick up Howard as a second character.

THE QUESTING BEAST

The Questing Beast has arrived to challenge Dane Whitman as it has challenged all Black Knights in his family before him, in the first true test of his worthiness to carry the Ebony Blade and his family's legacy. Unable to reject its ultimatum for fear of wreaking terrible havoc on all of New York and beyond, Dane is forced to confront the Beast in Times Square at noon, though he knows not what to expect from the creature, nor how he is intending to battle and ultimately defeat it.

With only the Ebony Blade by his side, he will need to rely on the guidance and teachings of the forefather spirits held within the sword, as well as timely intervention by any other, more well-seasoned heroes, to survive this trial, and reckon with forces that hunt him down irrespective of his willingness to cede to his late grandfather's will.

Characters Involved: Black Knight, TBC
Desired # of Players: 3-4

The Questing Beast rampages through New York out of Times Square, having issued its challenge to Dane and awaiting his arrival for their fateful clash. However, the risk to New York and its innocent citizens goes beyond what Dane is capable of handling, and he's out of his depth in need of help; luckily, the Questing Beast's threat can't simply be ignored, and more seasoned heroes will come to his aid, and induct him into a world he doesn't necessarily want to be a part of.

I'm opening up the Questing Beast as a player event in New York! If you'd like to get involved just let me know - I'll be welcoming in collabs, solo posts, and any ideas you have for linking your own character's journeys into this challenge!

As we’ve discussed, Ben will definitely be making a trip to New York now. Excited to see who else will be joining

Turns out I'm still kicking. Apologies for the lack of DD posts and for being radio silent the past few weeks due to an unexpectedly turn of events in my sched. I've been lurking in the sub, casually reading these terrific posts you guys are putting out, and hoping to catch up.

With that said, I've got a post coming up by the end of the week, just finishing the Foggy and Karen story on my part.

Also, I think I'll throw Elektra into the ring and participate in the Times Square event, that is, if there's room for her. :)

Spider‑Man has been swinging over New York for nearly half his life now, a twenty‑eight‑year‑old veteran hero who still treats every crisis like it’s his responsibility alone. He’s fought most of his rogue gallery at this point and has survived more than he ever admits. Aunt May remains the quiet anchor in his life, along with his long-term partner Mary Jane Watson; the two constants in his life that he protects just as fiercely as the city itself. He’s older, sharper, and a little more tired than the kid who first put on the mask, but the heart of him hasn’t changed.

I'm not here to reinvent the wheel with Spidey. We all know who he is.

I'm just here to write a few short adventures about the wallcrawler, trying to bring together some of the aspects of the mythos that I personally love. He's going to swing around New York, save some lives and punch some bad guys.

I'm also keen to do a lot of collaboration. My first "arc" is planned with some breathing room, perfect for him to interact with the various heroes of the city. This is something I'm somewhat missing with Ben, given he's not based in such a popular location normally. Much like MB's concept, this is an older, more experienced, Spidey, so i'm keen to have him pass on some wisdom (even if said wisdom happens to just be the tried and tested "with great power comes great responsibility."

Oh, and Big Wheel. I want to write Big Wheel.

Genuinely, if you're planning on Spidey yourself, I'm more than happy to withdraw him! I have other ideas I was debating between and i'd be fine going that route instead

Perish the thought! I've never been a believer in dibs, nor do I have any more right to it than someone who's been actively participating. If anything, this could be my way out of the quagmire: if I put up a competing app and yours wins out, then it's the universe telling me I should be going with my second idea, anyway.

The first fifteen years of Peter Parker's life were remarkably normal. The last five have been anything but. When thinking about how I would approach Spider-Man in this new continuity, I found that neither did I want to go with an older, settled-down version nor did I want to strip him down to the studs and leave myself the work of gradually introducing all the classic elements -- which led to this compromise, an in media res approach where we're meeting the character at the beginning of his prime. Five years felt like the sweet spot: enough experience to where Pete feels like he's seen it all, not enough experience to say he actually has.

Making Pete a college student also positions him nicely within the larger universe. He's still significantly younger and more immature than the movers and shakers, your Superman/Batman/Captain Americas of the world. At the same time, he's just old enough to mentor the likes of the Teen Titans, Ms. Marvel, and perhaps even a young Miles Morales, should an interested player turn up. This age puts him on a level with folks like Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, and Roy Harper, which is great place for someone like Peter to live, in my opinion.

As for storytelling, I'm a genre purist. I just want to provide fun, digestible adventures surrounded by all the interpersonal drama we've come to associate with Spider-Man. One of the things that keeps drawing me back to the character is not just Peter himself but the richness of his supporting cast; from love interests to villains, best friends and everything in between, there are so many moving pieces that I can't imagine how anyone could ever get bored. I certainly haven't, and that's why I've deliberately picked a time in Peter's life when his personal circle was the widest -- and that's before we even get into player-to-player interactions, which I intend to more consciously pursue.

The goal here is less reinvention and more reinvigoration. I want to avoid the malaise that has largely hung over modern Spider-Man comics by returning everyone's favorite wall-crawler back to an earlier time, a cleaner time in his history. While I can find something to love about every era of Peter Parker's life, I truly believe that his Empire State days are unmatched in their storytelling potential: you have the Coffee Bean Gang, the full Daily Bugle crew, Gwen and Mary Jane's Betty & Veronica dynamic, the looming threat of Norman Osborn's relapse, all the classic villains already introduced... It's the ideal pressure cooker to keep Peter on his back foot.

Of course, I'm not here just to relive the glory days. While I won't pretend that I'm not already thinking of how to adapt and reinvent classic Spider-Man stories, my main focus is still to leverage the "One Universe" concept to its full potential. There are some DC baddies who'd feel right at home in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, and I'm particularly keen on seeing how the web-head could interact with a whole new batch of heroes.
