Aurora would linger back as Arrish and Bug went back and forth on the topic of hacking the Sim itself. Both had valid points as far as she was concerned, though Arrish’s route of doing so seemed unnecessarily risky. Not to the data recovered, as ostensibly there shouldn’t be any due to it being a scrimmage match, not that Aurora was convinced that was the case by this point. But in the fact that consequences could befall them for how he went about it.

Which mirrored the point Arrish was making well enough. Even if potentially now how he was meaning to do so.

Her attention was pulled onto Bug’s performance in the Sim however, leading her to brighten up as she added in her own thoughts. “I would like to second the mention of using the fallen Squid. I had to speculate, since we only had an aerial view of the Sim. But I’m guessing you used a Peragus bypass, in combination with your positive IFF tag, to gain root access. But being able to crack through the errors to reactivate the Kattai as quickly as you did after was impressive.”

“And Sleepy and I wouldn’t be too opposed I’d think. Sadly our normal positions wouldn’t lead to much of a range boost.” She would offer as she started moving towards the briefing room. Pulling Arrish along with her, assuming he was still using her to stabilize himself. But that was hardly incidental, as she knew herself well enough that if she didn’t start moving, this conversation would make them miss the debrief.

“Though, linking up the drones to Sleepy’s targeting system might allow for more autonomous execution of combat hacks.” She would ponder as she led the way. “Though the code injections wouldn’t be able to be as customized in that case. But sensor jamming, or remote detonation of grenades might be doable.”

Bug looked at Arrish and frowned for a moment, a bit annoyed at his speech of pretending to know 5D chess while at the same time showing an unbecoming condescending remark in his eyes. Although he made an offer of sharing some girl's info. "Later. When we are not busy with shooting *Crudes*." He replied, before his attention was grabbed by Sparks, and most importantly Aurora. Cat was out of the bag, and who would not like the approval of a cute redhead? Bug felt validated.

"Good old Daedalus jailbreak. It still works." He said, admitting his wizardry."I was tempted to try if I could reenact grey goo scenario with the nanomachines but it was too far beyond my skills. So hijacking the Kattai was good enough."

He then sighed. "Well, If you don't mind I will be beside my team leader and await the debriefing." Bug added. "Still, one last thing..."

His eyes went once again to Arrish. "For want of a naile the shoe is lost, for want of a shoe the horse is lost, for want of a horse the rider is lost." He let a pause go by before adding. "If I was not turned pink, would Elora be surprised enough fot me to land that shot?" He let that drop by as he began to walk away.

Minerva

Minerva decided to just stand there and let the conversation proceed without her input, favoring to use the time she had to reflect on the battle. Objectively. she did well playing her role as a frontline and harasser, she even managed to get a kill with the loudmouth. In fact she believed that she did her best and made the best choices.

And yet, she died.

Now admittedly it took a lot to take her down but they still took her down, she's not meant to be that easy to put down.

Minerva clenched her arms took a deep breath and walk towards the briefing room. She cannot show weakness right now, not while there people to witness it.

Minerva & Bug

We Happy Few

Step after step Bug hobbled around, trying to steer his overloaded body towards the briefing room, probably waiting for team Leader Ava to come. However, the nerves still were not connecting properly, as his left foot failed to set a step, his knee bending forward as his face lurched ominously.

Bumping directly into someone’s back and rump. Someone whose back and rump seemed sculpted of granite. Ah hell… out of all the people he could have bumped into, he had literally fallen on Minerva’s back.

Steading himself, he pretended as if nothing had happened, before using the most sparse of expressions. “Hey. Good fight.” He said, as he tried to steady himself once more.

Minerva would look at her back as she saw her teammate bump into her, that is careless of him and probably reckless as well. She took a few moments to help the prince settle himself before speaking.

“Good fight as well, I saw what you did on that Framewerk that was inspired.” Minerva spoke as she looked at Bug, realising something from his surprisingly tense muscles.

“You seemed to be pushing yourself too much, do you need help getting into the briefing room? I am heading there as well.”

The Prince let out a strangled grunt as he tried once again to stand himself. He eyed Minerva once again, his eyebrow raising somewhat. “Who the hell are you and what have you done with Minerva?” Bug would state, as he gritted his teeth and began hobbling once more. “But regarding your question, I don’t really need the help. I should be able to live on my own with this. Cruxi won’t offer assistance.” He replied bitterly. “This…is nothing.” He said, as he continued, quickly attempting to switch back the topic. “Do you have any favourite sweet, or drink? I’ll treat a fellow warrior regardless of the result.”

Minerva raised her eyebrow in confusion before speaking. “I am Minerva and as far as I know there is only one of me.” she spoke with a serious tone. “And I insist, at the very least you should consider buying a cane for support. It would be annoying if you falter on those wounds at an unfortunate moment.” Minerva spoke as she gave moment to consider her options.

“I just go with water most of the time, I see no reason to change it up now.”

Bug sighed. Minerva was sometimes even more naive than the muscle-for-brains Griff. “I just need a moment to let the nerves settle.
They have been like that since the incident. Healing is not easy when it comes to it. But I will not drag anyone down.” Bug stared at Minerva. “It was part of the offer I accepted. “Firewater it is, miss Happiness Sunshine. You’re not getting the Class rep option. It doesn’t suit your mettle to simply ask for boring water.” Bug added, his nerves settling again.

“See, much better now.” He continued to walk, his steps full of ponderous determination.

”You're not dragging me down.” Minerva spoke as she stared at the so-called firewater, an oxymoron if she got the English. Oh well what is the worst that could happen.

”Sure why not.” Minerva spoke not realising she was being offered alcohol.

”Also I have a name and it is not Happiness Sunshine.”

Bug rolled his eyes. Sarcasm was lost on this girl. “You totally have the face of someone called Happiness Sunshine. Really.” He would insist, as he took a deep breath, his eyes leveling with her owl-like stare. “You need…to loosen a little. Steel is strong because it bends before it breaks.” Bug answered. “We have so much work to do with you…” He would trail off.

Minerva would stare for a while as she makes a mental note to check if Athena has been called anything too close to Happiness Sunshine, not that she cares much about her secret but if she needs to know if Bug knew about her origins.

”I will never break.” she replied as she began heading to the briefing room. Her tone seemed like it was more of a promise than a bravado most people use. She cannot afford to be that weak little girl anymore, she cannot afford to let anyone die while she can do something about it.

“Are you really sure about that?” Bug would answer, his eyes with the same dirty, putrid stare that he once cast upon her, before the battle was done, when she had tried to undercut him in a condescending manner. “Really sure, sure about that, kiddo?” He would answer, even if he was younger.

“Lorenzo can break you easily. And he will if he needs to. He knows your past and weakpoints. And as far as I can tell, you’ve…got some points of imbalance.” Bug would reply. “Nevertheless, you’re not a half bad warrior. And we are supposed to get along in the same team, so listen to someone who has been broken before. Never say never.” He leaned against the corridor, still staring and judging.

”I am.” was the only reply Bug would receive as she watched Minerva cast an unsettling smile. It wasn’t a smile someone will use to reassure people or a smile that dares fate to do their best.

It is the smile of someone who realized she would experience hell and welcomed the prospect.

If he wants to break her, he is welcome to do so. She will rise, stand back and fix herself back with a smile on her face.

She would do so until she could never stand again. That's her atonement for the failure that she was on that day.

Surprisingly Bug received her smile with his own smile “Well…like I said. You have the face of a Happiness Sunshine” He added, undeterred, as he walked up to her, maintaining her stare at all times. “And you don’t know how cute are you being right now.” He added, tilting his face to whisper on her ear. “57% of body mass lost. Orbital strike after a rampage that ended the life of more than…three hundred people. That’s what turned me like this. Compared to that…you’re just a deluded little girl who thinks she has superhero powers. I’m telling you this for your own good. The universe is a far emptier, vast and scarier place than your tale of heroes and villains. So…take my offer of peace, and my words of wisdom. Who knows when you might need them.”

“I am not Happiness Sunshine.” Minerva decisively insisted as she ignored the rest of Bug's words. She lost her happiness and sunshine a long time ago. For a moment, Bug would see sympathy in Minerva's eyes even if it disappeared as soon as she called her a little girl.

“And I think I am older than you.” she added before walking heading to the briefing room and leaving Bug alone with hurried steps.

Because a part of her doesn't want to admit that she wants to be that little girl surrounded by her family and a dream untainted by tragedy.

“Heh. Might as well get some really fancy drinks up. She really needs some good poison.” Bug would say to himself, before attempting to follow. “And I do treat a fellow warrioress to drinks when they perform well.”

Lucius

Returning to the simulation being visualized before them once more, Lucius' eyes scanned over the action in silent contemplation. He was just in time to see Mema-Ka outside of his unit in the simulation, trying to make his way over to a Team Mango unit that had been stealthed and hidden away. Clever, and yet....he would watch as the Guinevere zapped him, frying the maser-using, exposed pilot like a bug zapper back home. As if he was some pest insect lingering during the summer months, cut short in life by virtue of being an annoyance. Perhaps the Guinevere hadn't intended to seem like such to the others, but even so it brought the old nostalgic memories of happier summers to mind in a more gruesome light than before.

It was but a simulation, and yet had that just been real then they-....he....no. This wasn't the time to imagine it. He didn't want to, not even in his worst nightmares.

"You must be the pilot of the 'Obscure'. Good to see you made up your mind quick regardless of what followed. Well done. Good to have you aboard. I shall look forwards to getting to know more about you." Mema-Ka said in a soft manner, holding out his hand towards Lucius in a polite manner, offering a handshake then turning to Elora.

Lucius accepted the offered handshake, nodding to the man whose voice was familiar to his ears from the simulation. The one who had given him the offer and orders, though he'd lost contact with him after Logic Driver had mostly gone down. Likely due to whatever was jamming up the frequencies at the time perhaps? Ah. That would be something to look at later if he could find some public enough things to get a rough idea of his new team members here. Well, unless he got a chance to talk to them each first, he supposed.

The other man even so proceeded to talk to Logic Driver's pilot and the so-designated 'Mr. Pink', whose voice was that of the Team Mango member who had spoken to him with an offer before. Hmm. Even then, casting his eyes about seemed to tell well enough where the old man's attention was actually at after what had happened with Logic Driver's pilot in the simulation. Thinking on the matter still left a sense of familiarity, a vague one, lingering like an aftertaste in Lucius' mind. Even so, he seemed much less attentive to people than the data at hand....and with that came some things into his mind that left a sour taste in his mouth.

“R-Really?” Elora reminisced on the battle, and remembered the frightening sight that befell her once she was down on the ground, crawling with her Framewerk.
“That drone then…It was yours, um, Lucius?” She asked, starting to gradually regain her composure, as she was distracted by the technical topic. “I didn’t see any drones like that when I read through the profiles…Thank you,” she spoke, and a slight blush emerged on her cheeks.
“For helping me there…I appreciate it.”

The younger man was snapped back to reality by the girl near him at the time, and he rubbed the back of his head somewhat sheepishly. Even if it wasn't the time for a full technical disclosure necessarily at the moment she did seem genuinely curious about his drones at least, though upon her giving him thanks Lucius simply smiled back softly in turn. If there was one thing he knew-

"Do you-...oh! Yes that was mine. Experimental type Attack Drone actually, has a medium particle beam instead of a small laser.

And...it's no problem. I'm happy to help."

...it was that he'd take the same action again under those same circumstances. He knew it. Part of him didn't reget it one bit and held firm in that, and yet something in the pit of his stomach also sank at the thought simultaneously. His recklessness had gotten him killed. Saved Elora for a bit longer, but even then she'd eventually succumbed in turn. Staving off the seemingly inevitable just a moment longer. Something about it spoke to him in a way that felt most...human. Yet it also spoke to him in a way that felt like it wanted to crawl down his spine in a much more unpleasant fashion.

Had this been a real battle-

Looking back to the simulation after he'd spoken to the girl, Lucius' warm smile turned into a gaze of focus upon the ensuing turns of the battle back and forth once more.

-he and all of Team Apple would all be dead. Them and most of Mango.

This was soon followed with a greater clash of blows, his killer and Team Apple's last hope diving into a melee that had two conclusive results. One was that a shining hand pierced through the cockpit of his killer, ending her outright in much more quick and simplistic fashion than had the other Team Apple pilot prior. Yet even then, the winner was cut in half....sitting there, just as Logic Driver had, defenseless and a sitting duck.

A man would have been roasted alive before his very eyes reduced to dush and charred carbon right there and then.

It was then only a matter of one more Arklight Thunder being fired at the downed Horst before the end came in kind, leaving the Guinevere and its pilot the sole surviving victor of the simulation battle.

...At least the pilot of Logic Driver seemed well enough to go thank the pilot of the Horst for helping, before Ritsu addressed them and he snapped to attention and gave a salute in turn out of pure drilled habit. Still, he felt some tension release from his shoulders at the thought that the other girl seemed more ok now than she had been. She'd almost been the first casualty of it all, save for the actions of her teammates being the deciding factor. Albeit a few too many of them all had perhaps jumped in from the looks of it, and yet some part of him felt okay with that. Almost a bit reassured.

She did overextend, you know? Ruined the approach for her team. Was a distraction to save her. Would have been better to leave her for dead and-

Shut. Up.

The younger man's right hand suddenly flinched in a spasm, though he paid it no mind himself or looked down at it. To him it was as if nothhing had happend, at least externally speaking, but internally he felt something spit out of his thoughts. Blasted thoughts. Uncomfortable, but still important. Unpleasant, and yet bearing some truth perhaps. He still didn't want it all to linger like it was. The silence that followed from it all, however, felt more stilling and welcome than a lot of things at the moment.

At least the muscle man who had been complaining was staying entertaining enough with his ourbursts watching the end of the sim, and even afterwards to boot. The blue haired girl stuck out her tongue and jotted off. Aurora, the one name he'd really gotten thus far among his new teammates for sure, walked over to speak to the readheaded man who had piloted Horst and still sat inside of his simulation chair at the moment. The blue-haired man who had emerged from the simulation after winning, he assumed, was the Guinevere's pilot then. The red haired woman who had emerged was his killer, then, and pilot of the Argent Wings that Horst had taken down in the end. A skilled pilot to be sure.

From here, not much registered too much to him for some seconds. The man who had shaken his and and Horst, then Horst's pilot and Mr Pink, spoke. The doting Lilim, he really still needed to confirm if she was some daycare-type model for that matter, moving over to the Logic Driver's pilot. He then began to make his way toward the breifing room, or at least what he could gather was the proper direction, his breaths becoming more controlled for a moment as he went along. Even so, Lucius felt once again drawn outside of himself from his thoughts as he barely managed to parse a set of four words as he passed a conversing Mr. Pink and Argo's pilot.

”I will never break.”

...Lucius kept on walking without pause. He needed to get to the breifing room, or so he told himself that was his imperative at least, and as he was so new it was unlikely he'd be further approached for the time being perhaps. Maybe. But for a moment, the younger man would be forced to again take a pause as something flashed into his mind, touching his senses and leaving a-...a....o-oh.

The flash of an image of a blackened exterior with cracks of seared red and pink he shouldn't be seeing like this. A face, indiscernible now, broken off from the explosive heat of what had happened. A body, sitting in his arms. The open air, arid and almost desert-like in nature. Twisted, burnt metal right next to him. The poignantly vivid smell of flash fried-

Without warning, and a little distance from most of the others, Lucius leaned on the wall with his left arm and grabbed his stomach with a clenched right hand. He silently heaved, even as he was fighting against every fiber of his body to not draw attention. His eyes darted to see from the corners of his vision. He held his breath for a few moments. He tried to push his mind off to other things.

It was nothing....not for now at least. Yeah. He hoped so. Please, please let it be far, far away from now. Not soon. Not here. Please, I'd give almost anything to-

If left uninterrupted, the new pilot would work to compose himself again and pretend as if nothing had happened. From there, he would finish his path to the breifing room without skipping a beat or making a sound.

Ava Lane

Ava let out a sigh as she found herself once more in reality, having been disconnected from the simulation.

Having a high synchronisation rate with her framewerk, naturally, she felt her entire body ached as a result of Argent Wings' destruction. A testament to how well the simulation emulated the real thing.

"Ugh..." she groaned as she tried to get out of the virtual reality pod, only to flinch because of the pain she felt from attempting to move around.

At this point, she was already used to the pain. At her level of synchronicity, feeling pain every time she piloted her framewerk was a given. Even if her framewerk did not take a single hit, those with a high level of synchronicity would always find themselves far more worn out than the average pilot after a deployment, as if it was not merely the framewerk that was fighting, but their own body.

Not wanting to cause undue worry, she opened the pod so the technicians overseeing the simulation would know that she was all right before sinking back into the seat within the pod to let her body rest for a while longer.

In the meantime, she turned her attention to the screen displaying the simulation. Namely, the battle that would determine the victor. That between Guinevere and Horst.

On paper, Horst would win because it was a combat unit and Guinevere was a support unit. However, Guinevere had taken minimal damage thus far, while Horst had taken considerable damage from its last engagement with Argent Wings.

Thus, Ava was somewhat confident that they would be the victor. A conclusion that was proven right soon after, as Spark emerged as the victor of the bout.

Not long after, she noticed Bugs walking over to her pod before giving her a salute.

Having already somewhat recovered from the simulation, Ava got out of the pod and returned the salute, "Thank you. You did well," she then added, "Although...there is no need to salute as we are effectively the same ranks, as mentioned by Lieutenant Kaname."

"Good work all around, everyone," she then said to the rest of the pilots, giving them a polite nod, before heading off to the briefing room.

A victory for her team, she supposed. She was happy, of course, but ultimately...it was not something that really mattered much.

They were here to fight Cruxi. Which was an entirely different experience from fighting framewerks.

Combat training against a framewerk was, of course, always beneficial, but it would be a poor metric for gauging effectiveness against Cruxi.

Different tactics and military doctrines were needed to fight Cruxi. Not because they were more dangerous—though Ava believed they were—but because there was an inherent difference between a human and a Cruxi. Not to mention the information gap between fighting against framewerks, which were manufactured by humanity, and when fighting the Cruxi's machines, which they often did not know the full capability of.

There was a reason there were many stories of ace pilots who were used piloting framewerks in conflicts between nations or planets to quickly end up dead when deployed against Cruxi.

It was simply a different experience. One that would only become clear on the battlefield when one came face to face with the evil that was the Cruxi race.

She hoped that the Professor would keep that in mind when picking the leader instead of basing it only on the results of that simulated combat training.

Elora smiled, and nodded with closed eyes after Lucius confirmed having been the owner of the drone she encountered. “Thinking back, they looked scary at first, but…they’re also cute. Um, that m-may be strange to say, sorry,” she backpedaled afterwards, as a blush of embarrassment emerged on her. “Bye,” she quickly spoke, and left the handsome young man.

She blinked as she was surprised by Aurora approaching her and Serah, and actually answering her question: she figured the older pilot was still upset with her due to the simulation, but it seemed she was not the type to carry a grudge towards her teammates. The intelligence specialist found herself nodding along to the red head's assessment. “I-It was a bit bizarre. I felt more, how do you say, awake during all of it, like after drinking an energy drink or two.” She gave an uneasy smile afterwards as Aurora then mentioned heading off to speak with Arrish. “Oh, uh, okay. I'm, I’m really sorry, Aurora,” she muttered, though the other pilot barely heard it as distance was already made between the two.

Her awkward expression turned positive, and she smiled as Serah, as bubbly as ever, recounted her own experiences. “Oh, you were? I’m sorry to hear that.” She nodded a bit, her eyes averted as Rhylaen’s Framewerk was mentioned.
“I’m glad the professor placed us in the same team. I would have probably been useless with her jamming working against team Apple.” Serah then announced her departure. Elora was about to wave goodbye when Serah surprised her with an offer.
“Really? That’s great!” She lifted her elbows with her clenched hands, and nodded with some assertiveness. “I’ll ask on your behalf then. But to think mister Bugatti is so kind…He is quite odd,” she mumbled, Serah having left the conversation.

Elora found herself alone for a moment, and looked at the other pilots from a distance. Griff seemed surprisingly upset: was he blaming himself for what happened with her? She grimaced: she didn’t want him to feel bad for her own mistakes. She promised herself she would talk with him and explain what happened, maybe over some training.

Minerva was also in there, speaking with Bug: she also seemed to be in a bad mood. Then again, she always did seem to be. She wondered if she carried a grudge for Arrish stopping her and Argo from finishing her off. She also saw Stella, and smiled as the kind Lilim provided for everyone. She was grateful for the talk with her, as that gave her the courage to see this mission to the end.

Then she saw as Ava opened the pod, surrounded by fretting engineers and scientists. Elora’s cheeks reddened: even in a situation like this, she was always so cool and composed, and beautiful. Elora still didn’t have the courage to approach her. Maybe once she had trained and gotten more confident in herself. Elora spent the rest of the time looking through her personal device, reading up on Jake and Lucius’ Framewerk specifications.

Finally, it was time for Lorenzo’s evaluation in the briefing room. He was standing behind the podium like before, with an even taller pile of scattered papers on it. He sighed…And then slammed his hands hard on the podium, scattering the papers in a startling explosion.

“FOOLS! All of you! I’ve seen primeval ooze with more brain cells than you lot! Even Cruxi shocktroopers would laugh at your lack of tactics…And they have been cybernetically lobotomized to have no emotions aside from rage!” He then started coughing violently, and after a short break and a swing of medicine from Liisa, he recovered.

“Let’s start with you, Cadet Gene,” he spoke with a tone of irritation, and pressed a button on his device. The projector behind him turned on, and showed footage from the virtual reality mission: shots from the battlefield, closer to the pilots, and even first-person from the cockpits, as if looking through the eyes of the pilots themselves. The footage was focused on Serah’s Framewerk Atty.

“Your role is as a high-speed scouting and harassment unit. You had an opportunity to flank team Mango to the west. But instead, you go for a suicide dive! Granted, you managed to take out Electric Dragonfly and her jamming, but it was far too reckless, lassie!” He pointed a finger at her as the footage showed Serah’s badass self-sacrifice in slow motion. “If you really want to kill yourself I won’t stop you, but such cowards are not welcome in my project. The only true victory is an overwhelming one, with casualties minimized when possible. You fight to live, not to die! Never forget that!”

Lorenzo then pressed the button again, and the footage shifted to Horst. “Cadet Duval, you may have survived far longer, but you were even more foolish!” He showed footage of Horst heroically coming to Logic Diver’s rescue, a slow motion shot of his Bastion slamming down to guard her against Argo’s deadly claws.

“You prioritized a disabled liability, and in the process left Sleeping Thunder, your sole Backliner, open for an enemy offensive. Not to mention meddling with the virtual reality program,” he added, as if in afterthought. He afterwards showed the awesome, heart-racing duel between Horst and Argent Wings. “You let your emotions rule over you, laddie. The Cruxi make easy prey of white knights like you. Never forget the mission, no matter the circumstance.”

“Speaking of easy prey…” the footage shifted to Logic Diver, showing the Frame as partially visible during the time Elora advanced while cloaked, allowing team Mango to observe how she operated while invisible. Elora herself was aghast at the footage, and clenched her fists with wide eyes.

“Cadet Liu’un, you’re ultimately the reason your team lost,” Lorenzo accused with a gnarled finger. “You had an opportunity to gather more data on the battlefield, and take a reasonable flanking approach. Instead, you threw caution to the wind, and immediately targeted Cockroach and Argent while far behind enemy lines, leaving no opportunity for backup in case your infiltration was compromised.”
The footage showed Cockroach’s drone bomb, followed by Logic Diver getting shot by Cockroach. “And in the end it was, leading to the rest of the battle.” Elora sniffled, holding back the urge to cry as her face reddened in shame.

Lorenzo, without hesitation, moved to the next target in his roasting. “However, at least you acknowledge your faults, unlike a certain other pilot.” His eyes narrowed on one pilot in particular. “Cadet Zel-Ghin, you think yourself better than the other Cadets. But you were one of the first ones to fall, weren't you?” He showed footage of the Squid charging forth, only to be bogged down by multiple Apple Frames, and ultimately wiped out. “While it is true that your role is as a Frontliner and vanguard, you nonetheless charged forth alone into combat with four opposing Framewerks when you should have stuck closer to Mother Goose and provided cover for her to close the distance. Granted, you were surprised and quickly incapacitated by Electric Dragonfly, but that might not have happened if you stuck closer to your allies and defended your allies.” He shook his wrinkled fist. “Learn some discipline, whipper-snapper!”

He then cleared his throat. “However, your brother did not fare much better. Cadet Mema-Ka, you ran off to the rescue of Logic Diver and left Sleeping Thunder undefended. Also, what Tevranian nectardew were you smoking to choose to confront Cadet Bugatti instead of staying to provide backup to Horst, and with a sacrifice no less? You might look like the more reasonable one, but you’re also just as foolhardy as your brother.”

The footage switched to Guinevere. Like with Logic Diver, the footage showed a half-camouflaged Framewerk, showing team Apple his movements during the battle.
“Cadet Quinn, though you may have been the sole survivor of this skirmish…That doesn’t excuse your cowardice!” He slammed the palm of his hand on the podium. “A Specialist’s role is to support the team with their given area of expertise, not huddle in a corner and wait for the smoke to clear! Even with Electric Dragonfly jamming the area, you had opportunities to advance further and scout to your allies via loudspeaker communications like Cadet Gene. Remember, every shot you don’t take is guaranteed to miss.”

Then, his eyes leaned to Griff. “Cadet Burnhardt…Against all logic, you performed better than I expected. You stayed within supporting distance and didn’t run off to rescue a lost cause. There were some small blunders here and there, but at least you know to follow orders.”

“Cadet Rhylaen, you also performed your role as a disruption specialist according to protocol, and didn’t stray too far from your unit. You likely would have survived longer had you tagged closer to your team, but you provided an anchor point for the rest of the team to rally behind.”

Lorenzo switched the footage to Rex Artus. “Cadet Sterling, you failed your mission objective of staying alive as Team Banana. However, you performed adequately when faced with overwhelming odds. Your drone setup was commendable, as was your vantage point for taking on team Mango. You likely would have done better with a proper team backing you up. Ten points and a parrot sticker for you,” he mumbled, and moved on to the next one.

“Cadet Briars, your performance as a Backliner was acceptable, hampered as it was by the disappearance of half of your team. However, you let yourself get carried away becoming hysterical. You must always keep calm and rational, no matter the situation. The Cruxi won’t be giving you the opportunity to shoot them while they are panicking, so neither will you.”

“Cadet Twilight, you had the opposite problem.” The footage showed Angel Zero moving forward to engage Mother Goose, only to be flattened by a shield bash from the Bastion.

“You kept a cool head even at the end, and stayed within supporting distance of your team, engaging as needed. However, you lack awareness. You made rookie mistakes with your positioning that the enemy could easily take advantage of. However, aside from that, you were one of the best performing pilots during the mission.”

He then looked at Stella. "Cadet Stella, your handling of Mother Goose was performed as was expected, though I don't fully condone the enabling of Cadet Gene by throwing her. However, unaware of her plans, that is excusable."

Then, the footage showed Argent Wings, dashing forth and delivering a deadly combo slice to Rex Artus. “Cadet Lane, you also performed well enough considering the circumstances. You used the cover to your advantage, stayed within supporting distance, and engaged as needed with the enemy. However, while you have experience, you tend to develop tunnel vision as the situation turns complicated. At one point you made an unnecessary tactical retreat, seemingly to perform hit and run tactics, when you could have engaged more directly, as there were not enough allies at that point to perform a viable distraction strategy. Still, you performed commendably.”

“And finally…Cadet Bugatti.” Suddenly, Ritsu coughed into her fist. Lorenzo turned his head in her direction. “Executive Officer, if I may speak for a moment…” The old man blinked. “Hm? What is it, Lieutenant?”
She tapped at her personal device. “It seems you overlooked Cadet Minerva.”
Lorenzo blinked again, and looked at Minerva. There was an awkward pause.

“Oh,” he mumbled, and pressed the button, showing Argo’s excellent flanking and assault maneuvers, as well as the hair-raisingly brutal final battle with Shiva.
“...I suppose you performed well enough.” Then, as if he hadn’t even given her another thought, he moved on. “Now, Cadet Bugatti. You taunted the enemy team with psychological warfare, mangled your own drone weaponry, and even misused weapon technologies to create technological abominations.” There was a pause, as he looked grimly at him…Before he broke out into a smile with his half-missing teeth.

“Now that’s the kind of grit I want to see! You use whatever is given to you with creativity and pragmatism, and survive where no other pilot likely could have. If only half of you were as ruthless, the Cruxi would be quaking in their slimy alien boots!”

However, lieutenant Ritsu did not share in the professor’s positive assessment with a slight shake of her head as she kept her arms crossed.

Lorenzo then sighed heavily.

“Now then, it is time to announce the promotion to squad leader. Truth be told, none of you are qualified for this role. However, I realized that a compromise could be made. Therefore, I decided to make an additional promotion of secondary squad leader. Maybe when the two of you combine your half-wits, they make for a single brain cell. And those two will be…”

There was a pause, purposefully done to build up anticipation, until finally, he spoke again:

“Cadet Lane, and Cadet Bugatti. Lane’s previous experience shall be put to good use in a squad leader role. And to complement her straightforward thinking is Bugatti as secondary squad leader, answering to Cadet Lane. You shall provide the alternative, out-of-the-box tactics when other plans fail. Congratulations, hah hah!”
The old man guffawed, followed by a bout of violent coughing and a chug of medicine. Elora, however, clapped her hands to congratulate the two…followed by a blush as she quickly stopped.

Lieutenant Ritsu approached the two with a salute, and opened a tiny flat box that contained four items. Two of them were armband badges, shaped like hearts with two intersecting cogs piercing through them. The other four were pistols.

“As part of your promotion, you are hereby authorized to carry taser pistols,” Ritsu explained.
“You are also permitted to use them to uphold discipline during an emergency situation. Are there any questions?” She asked, not only the two freshly promoted pilot officers, but also the rest of the team.

Griff

It was debriefing. Griff was prepared with his hands near his belt. But then it struck him. It wasn't that kind of debriefing.

He blinked his blue eyes as he watched and listened to Lorenzo.

First that old man had called Serah a coward.

'Serah and Atty are cowards?! This is bullshit! That was totally a warrior like move!' He mentally lashed out, Lorenzo was starting to look more like a dark galactic ranger for every passing minute, even if he had to admit that the old geezer had a point that you fight to live not to die. Still it left a bad taste in Griff's mouth, he wanted to tighten his fist and whack the old guy right in the-

Then he continued on to calling Arrish foolish, well Arrish was a little foolish at times and he sucked as the last hope for their team. Losing wasn't something the red ranger did. Arrish had to be stripped of the right to ever don the colour red on his suit or frame from now on. But Arrish had gone to rescue Elora, taking what Griff considered were his job, but still he had been a good temporary replacement. Even if he totally failed to defeat the nerd. He didn't deserve the old man's harsh words. He couldn't hate Arrish.

When Lorenzo came to Elora, Griff felt the urge to toss his helmet at the old guy and yell at him. How dared he talk to his student that way! Elora was his friend! How dared he put blame on her- That's it. Griff was going to beat him up, even if that meant a month in the brig. No one talks to his buddy like that. But Griff was curious what he would say about the others. When Lorenzo began to speak about Sparks and calling out his cowardice. Griff momentarily forgot about his anger and nodded his head quickly, somehow Lorenzo also was able to speak some truth. That cheeky stupid nerdy Sparks guy. Grr.

Then the bastard forgot Minerva. How could he possibly forget her? Her abs were huge! Griff's eyebrows twitched and his anger flared up a little again. At least he complimented Bug, who now got awarded secondary squad leader and Ava getting primary. Griff did a victory arm pump to celebrate. Had it been Sparks, Minerva or Arrish. He might have had to call in sick.

"Congrats buggyboy- I mean sir Buggyboy! The Griffman is at your service sir and yours too ma'am!" Griff made a salute to Bug and Ava and felt abit better, having forgotten momentarily how Sparks had won the simulation. But he still had something to do. That old geezer. His temper flaring up again as he was reminded of the man's words.

"I have a question for you ol' geezer! Why are you such a stuck up jerk?! I get calling Sparks a coward! Cause he is! But saying that Atty and Serah are cowards? They were really brave charging in alone, so was that clone guy whose name I can't remember who got blown up in the matter of a few seconds! They are here fighting at their best while some other guys are back on their home planet drinking beer and not giving a damn! Arrish and Mema-Ka tried to save a comerade in battle there is no greater act than putting ones own life in danger to save a friend! And saying that Elora is the sole reason for our team losing isn't just mean, it's wrong! She really tried her best! I am proud of her! I am not gonna let you call her the reason we lost, we lost because... Team Mango worked better as a team and I failed my teammates! So if you are gonna blame someone you wrinkly old hagbag, then blame me!" Griff bit his teeth together, his eyes narrowing, his eyebrows vibrating, some tears almost forming at his eyes as he glared towards Lorenzo.

He had been the biggest reason for their failure. He failed Rhylaen, Aurora, Jake, Elora, Arrish and Mema-Ka. He failed all of them. If someone were at fault for their loss it was him. It was painful for him to admit it. But hearing Lorenzo's harsh words to Serah and Elora was too much for him to bear.

"I go put myself in the brig. I know the way." Griff gave Ritsu, Ava and Bug a salute and then hung his head down abit and sighed deeply.

Serah kept one eye closed with a wry smile on her face, hands behind her head, as she listened nonchalantly to Lorenzo chewing her out. She'd been prepared for a tongue-lashing and boy did she get one, not even half as gentle as she hoped he would be. Still, if a bit of verbal abuse was the worst of it, she didn't mind so much. 'Same old, eh professor?' she thought to herself, smirking, before her smug self-confidence turned to confusion. She'd never met Lorenzo before last week, so why did she feel like this all had happened before, and not even just one time to boot?

Odd sense of deja-vu aside, she felt a little more sorry for the rest of her squad. Some got off easy, some were chewed out. Serah herself thought everyone didn't do half bad... well, aside from Mema-ka. He absolutely deserved it for abandoning Raptor like he did. Zel-Ghin too. Zel-Ghin was a jerk. The pair of brothers aside though, Serah thought everyone else looked really cool in the footage, even picking up things she missed earlier. Arrish diving in to save Elora was super cool, Ava and Minerva were beautiful to watch in action, she was shocked all over again that Bug survived Aurora's assault... Serah really thought everyone was super talented.

If the professor didn't want them all to get killed, he shouldn't have pit the crew in a death match. One side was going to lose no matter what. At least, that's how Serah viewed it.

The lieutenant approached Astolfo and Ava with a tiny box after the professor had promoted those two, a decisions Serah supported fully; the two made an awesome pair inside the simulation. Elora gave her full support too, clapping when the two got promoted. When Elora meekly withdrew into herself from embarassment, Serah decided to clap too, yelling out: "Go Ava! Go Bug!” to cheer the two of them on. Then, Serah turned to Elora and made a "peace" sign at the other girl while a cheeky grin was plastered on her face, having made a fool of herself to make her friend feel a little better.

Unfortunately, the goofs didn't last long. The first person to speak up when the professor asked for questions was Griff, stepping in lightning fast. He defended Serah, Elora and his whole team. He blamed himself for being the reason team Apple lost, and quickly grew meek when he realised how much he'd mouthed off.

That bugged Serah. It bugged her a lot, actually. Part of it was just it being Griff- but also that he felt the need to come in and defend her. "Cut it out Griff,” she interjected, crossing her arms and averting her gaze from him. "The professor's right. I got reckless and careless. Just because it worked out doesn't mean I didn't do something stupid,” she'd say half-heartedly. Its not like she regretted her choices, but Lorenzo's critique of her was justified.

"Just one thing, though, professor,” Serah would cast her attention to Lorenzo, intending to follow up with a remark of her own. "What's the point of making us fight each-other, if you don't want us to get ourselves killed? We had a rrreeeeeaaaaaallly close match there.”

Mema-Ka

Zel-Ghin had remained quiet when Lorenzo spoke, save for a couple of well placed 'Hmphs', his eyes only narrowing when he heard how Lorenzo commented on his own and his brother's performance.

Mema-Ka on the other hand watched the debriefing with a facial expression of indifference, taking mental notes of Lorenzo's input on each pilot, before offering a golf-like clap to Astolfo and Ava being gazetted, followed by a salute as he stood in place, then slowly turning around to face Lorenzo after witnessing and hearing Griff's outburst, waiting until there was a moment of silence before speaking himself.

"Executive Officer, I did receive an order by Cadet Briars who was our designated squad leader to support the Logic Diver. Are you saying that orders are to be disregarded in battle based on personal opinion of said order? My reasonings for confronting the Cockroach in it's merged state was because of various factors.

One being that my mobility with my machine was so hampered by carrying the Logic Diver, I could not get to the Argent with it still carried, neither could my sensors pick up the Guinevere, therefor leaving Logic Diver behind were the only option which would not lead to a hundred percentage chance of destruction of both framewerks in an open field, and potentially leave the Horst to face down three adversaries at the same time. The Argent Wings were damaged, a lightweight frame much like the Guinevere, however the Squid or what remained of it is a heavily fortified piece and installed into it's quadruple legs be the rocket hammers, allowing itself to either slam into or drill it's way into an enemy frame, which could inflict devastating damage upon the Horst. The Logic Diver also lack the ranged firepower to take it down on it's own.

Using my already damaged frame as a weapon, which is what it is, which is what we all are to be fair, regardless of material or species, to achieve victory must be the primary objective at all times. Isn't that why we are here? To make sure this conflict that has plagued us for so long is put to a swift end? The Raptor, my partner is prepared to make the offering, as am I. Would the time and moment present itself, for the tomorrow we are all striving to reach. It does not mean I encourage others to throw their lives away for nothing, but for something. If they have to."
Mema-Ka looked to Lorenzo and gave a soft smile, his purple eyes landing on the older man.

'I wonder what game you are playing Lorenzo. You and that small Lilim by your side. What is your stake in this conflict of species, what has made you come all this way? To struggle through life. Revenge? Hatred? The desire to protect? Or perhaps one or several of these pilots are the key... to something you have created or plan to create. A weapon perhaps? To end everything at long last? It does sound like the doorway to the promised land...now doesn't it? Nothing would be more desired.'

The tension that whipped around the room was incredible. Lorenzo had been roasting each and every member to varying degrees, and you could feel the entire room light up with emotions. Arrish took a deep breath to steel himself before answering and was met with the lovely scent of lavender and roses. Something else was beneath that as well, a familiar scent and a comforting one; like the oil the engineers worked on when they were fixing up the framewerks or the smell of framewerk after an auto-wash. The lingering scent relaxed his shoulders and helped him remain calm while everyone was being roasted. Instead of shouting or getting angry, he listened.

Elora was the first, and she crumbled apart when Lorenzo told her off for being the reason that Apple had lost the battle. Arrish looked at the young girl with a degree of shame. Her decision wouldn't have been nearly that bad if Arrish hadn't tried to save her. White Knight indeed.

Griff was the next to speak up. Although he was quick to congratulate the new captains, his voice was full of aggravated frustration and guilt. He believed that Serah and her framewerk had fought their best and were deserving of praise for being so brave in the face of the enemy. That Arrish and Mema-ka fought like saviors, knights of old, when they went to save Elora. He blamed himself entirely for Apple's failure in winning and had been about to send himself to the brig.

His brackish emotions brought the next voice into the fold, and one that Arrish watched with interest. He had been uncertain about Serah before, thinking of her as a child, but that doubt was washed away when she didn't cry or get angry but acknowledged her own failures. Even when it seemed that it was an explosive play, it was still throwing her life and her framewerk away without thought. Someone who could see that difference, even after being roasted for being a suicidal maniac, couldn't be that immature.

Then there was Mema-ka. Arrish had some words for the noble, but listening to his logic and reasoning brought another mood into his mind. He had been so serious about his decision to send the raptor railing into a damaged but warped enemy framewerk. He had gone into such detail about his decision-making process and how it was the best decision he could possibly make. Something about it brought a smile to Arrish's face. The seriousness of it. The lengthy explanation. How everyone in the room was some varying degree of frustrated, emotional, or sad. He couldn't help himself.

Arrish started laughing.

The noble put a hand to his face to try and hide his snickering, but he couldn't help it; the look on Mema-ka's face when he said the cockroach, the squid... no no no, the COCK SQUID.

"BAHAHAHAA"

His gut was busting, and he had to put his hands on his stomach to stop himself from keeling over from the ridiculousness of it all. Everyone was treating this like they had been done wrong, and that they were actually all good. That they deserved more than just an ample roasting, or that they deserved such a biting critique for making a mistake. It had been a close match, and for what? Ten points and...

"... A Parrot Sticker! You've got to be pft-snrk-pft-bahahahahaha"

Arrish tried to reel back and control himself, pushing his head back up onto his shoulders and covering his mouth as the last bits of laughter stuck in his mind. He looked up with brilliant, shining eyes and smiled. This wasn't a game, Arrish knew, and the threat of the Cruxi was every last bit as important as making sure everyone was unified in their goal of defeating it. To disagree with Lorenzo, to explain why or how or what you did for what reason, was pointless. Arrish slicked back his hair and squared his shoulders, and unless Aurora had moved far away from him, slipped his arm back with hers.

"Brilliant show, everyone. To our newest Squad Leaders, I commend your promotion and look forward to working with you both. Now, unless there are further matters required of me, I have a kitchen to attend to." He slipped his arm away and bowed gently towards Aurora. "I thank you for your time and kindness, my lady. I hope to speak again soon." and then quickly turned to address the room once more. "Of course, I promised team Mango a steak dinner if they had won, but of course everyone here is invited to attend if they want to join them. In fact, I would find it remiss if anyone declined to join. Everyone shall be notified when it is done in the following hours, so if you have anything left to do, there should be ample time until then." Arrish waited for a minute to listen to any replies or if there was reason to stay around and listen, but if he found none he would be on his way.

Ava Lane

Ava listened to the Professor's assessment.

If she were to be honest, Ava was pleasantly surprised. The Professor might be the designated XO for this project, but his background was not in the military. Undoubtedly, he was a respected name in the field of Framewerk Technology, or rather, he was the father of the new generation Framewerk models, of which people's minds would go to upon hearing 'Framewerk'. But expertise on Framewerk Technology did not automatically translate to military matters.

Ava half-expected that he would defer to Lieutenant Ritsu on the debriefing, and yet he gave out his own assessment, and a very fair one, proving that he was well-versed in military matters as well, at least in terms of tactics and strategies.

On her part, Ava completely agreed with the Professor's assessment of her. She executed her job well enough, however her tactics and strategies were 'straightforward', they were textbook strategies that any experienced pilot with a decent mind for strategies could concoct.

The part of her developing tunnel vision when the situation became more complicated was also true. It would especially be a detriment in the actual battle when the stakes are higher, and the situation would surely be far more complex than a mere training exercise.

Which was why—as it should—despite being the leader of the winning team, she should not be the leader of—

It was then that the Professor's declaration of his leadership pick—completely the opposite of what Ava thought—made Ava's train of thought grind to a halt.

Her?

The leader of the squad?

Did the Professor not read her dossier that the brass must have given him!?

She WOULD not be responsible for these people's lives! She could not!

It was one thing for Ava to risk her own life and die on the battlefield against the Cruxi; she had accepted that. But it was another thing to be in charge of the one giving the order that might end up costing the lives of the other pilots.

Ava opened her mouth, ready to protest, before closing it quickly.

It wouldn't do for her to object here and compromise the authority of the XO. This was the sort of thing that she should have brought up in private.

Thus, when she heard some of the other members start cheering her on, Ava saluted Lieutenant Ritsu before grabbing the armband and pistol from the box offered by the Lieutenant.

"Thank you, Executive Officer, Lieutenant. I'm honoured by the appointment. May we meet later in private to discuss some matters?"

Zel-Ghin

"This has all been very interesting~ Now if you don't mind. I have a new high score to set, you junior league people wouldn't get it." Zel-Ghin said in a nonchalant manner, his hands in both of his jacket pockets, as he began to walk towards the doorway.

'To think you would overlook my brother and pick these two instead? Senile old fool. I won't die because of these NPC's, to think my brother of all people allow himself to be treated this way. It irks me. It irks me so much. But he is seemingly alright with this, what have I missed? I know him best of all. What am I missing? Why go over the simulation choices like that? He isn't disagreeing with the leadership choice... neither pushing against the old fools judgement. No... he is gauging the reactions of... someone? It is a test. He's prying at their lids.' Zel-Ghin's eyes wandered from Lorenzo, to his brother, to Arrish, Serah, Ava and Bug. Then his gaze landed on Ritsu.

'So that's what he is doing. He's putting on one of his acts to see how that woman is reacting. How typical of my brother to go straight for the jugular. You miss out a lot of the fun if you finish things too quickly. Isn't life all about experiencing things? Like playing a game. Everything has been programmed and scripted by someone or something, my fate is to play my role as flawlessly as possible. My brother you will rebel against the script to the very end won't you? Looking for eden in a game where there is no such place. Fate is such a cruel thing. But what is a man to do? Even the great wargod Zel-Ghin have to abide by the rules of the game. I will fight. Fight and die. As it was written. Like the story you once told me when we were young brother. Eden is a place of peace. But it does sound awfully dull. If choices are so important, would the other living beings have to have theirs unfulfilled for your dream to come true? Well, I gave you my word to be your shield. I will play my part. Are you trying to build an Ark? ...or are you planning to...' Zel-Ghin exhaled through his nostrils as he delved into his thoughts.

Rhylaen

The harshness of some of Lorenzo's assessments made Rhylaen wince internally, but he had good points. She was surprised to recieve light praise for her actions in the fight. She should have been watching the skies, should reacted to Atty and Serah much faster. Yes it was a worthwhile trade in a mock skirmish between teams, but in an actual battle she would be dead, and that was no good. She clapped when some of the others did as well at the announcement of the squad leaders. Ava and Asolfo. She didn't know either of them well yet, She'd have to remedy that sooner rather than later.

Arrish's laughter threw her. Was something funny? No, no one else was laughing.... She was distracted almost immediately from that thought by the offer of a steak dinner. Steak was absolutely delicious, and not something the cafeteria served, most likely. Certainly they hadn't yet. "Steak? Yes! I come," she declared.

Sparks

Sparks' cheeks burned. Lorenzo's words cut deep. He wasn't a coward...was he? Yes, naturally cautious -- looking and waiting for good openings. What good would it do his team if he was eliminated? He wasn't a scout -- he was a support unit, armed with long range drones but only a single actual weapon. And technically his drones were for repair, not offense, most of the time. At least he had the sense to take the criticism quietly, unlike some of the others. Griff calling him a coward too hurt less -- the man didn't like him -- but it still stung.

He waited for an opening, listening to the various responses. When he found one, Sparks addressed Lorenzo. "May I have permission to work on the various Framewerks -- with the assent of their pilots, of course? I can think of a few improvements that could be made to various systems, and I'm sure more will reveal themselves over time."

Lucius

The rather jarring vision seemed to somewhat linger in the worst of ways as the debrief began, in his nose, in his ears, and in his short term memory. Past? Present? Future? He hadn't a clue, but from what little he could tell he didn't recognize anyone he'd seen from it at the very least. Not that what he'd percieved was 'recognizeable' in the ways that counted most. Ugh. It made him somewhat look forward to the scolding he'd likely recieve for his actions, though given that some had exited the simulation before him it would be interesting to see what had occured while he'd been trying to get to cover and observe Mango's actions. Hmm, though for some reason his thoughts also went back to how the girl he'd spoken to, the pilot of Logic Driver, had seemingly just blushed suddenly and run off after-

“FOOLS!
The Old Fruit Bat

Lobotomized to only feel rage? Hmm. If true, that made the Cruxi even stranger and more evil seeming than he'd already heard before. But why do that to your own pilots? Expendable troops, then? Or had they-....ah. Well he'd keep those thoughts to himself for now, but suffice it to say that if it proved correct in any way it'd at least not be a total surprise. Even so, the older man would go on to begin his beration with the first person: Cadet Gene. Or, as it were, it seemed to be the blue-haired girl he'd seen after getting out of the simulation. High speed scouting and harassment unit, hmm? A smaller and much lighter unit than his own, wielding a hot blade that seemed to be like energy or plasma or something (based on the shows he used to watch back home at least)? And-...wow that was one heck of a self-immolating explosion.

But if the old man was saying one thing that stuck out to the younger man-

“If you really want to kill yourself I won’t stop you, but such cowards are not welcome in my project. The only true victory is an overwhelming one, with casualties minimized when possible. You fight to live, not to die! Never forget that!”
The Old Fruit Bat

...That was true. This war, ultimately, was a war to live and not get swallowd up by some peculiar and alien outside power. You had to fight like you wanted to live, despite the danger, despite the odds. Though bringing up an 'overwhelming victory' was certainly something that seemed more of a stretch to bring up. Not unless you were one of those bigshot war heroes of which so few had seeminmgly popped up since the beginning of the conflict. Well, based on something he'd looked up once out of curiosity one late night back home after his recruitment to the Pilot Preparation Program.

Still, it went even ebyond being a war to live in ways as well. Behind the anger at the droves of deaths, entire lost worlds, frustration at the struggle to get ahead, and other things one could hear online and in the media, that much was the goal: End the Cruxi threat, and not become extinct. Even then it was being corrupted the moment one moved just far enough from the battlefield....if even then. Some rallied it around huge political movements, others tried to jostle political peers in the news over 'being to blame' for certain failures, among other things people already did to spite each other and more, as well. Yet the core, the very root, of this all remained a fact whether some wanted to keep it a clear-cut message or not. Whether you liked the Federation or otherwise, or had other problems: The Cruxi were poised to be a truly exestential crisis that would end them one way or another if not pushed back against and eventually defeated.

Next, however, the older man would move on to a red-haired man in the room. The pilot of Horst. Cadet Duval, it seemed? Yet the first thing the old man did was show how the man dove in to save Logic Driver from the enemy, a thing even he had noticed several of Team Apple doing after exiting the sim in his own brutal fashion. Part of him wanted so badly to open his mouth in retort against the point the old man made about 'saving a liability', and yet part of him simultaneously felt as if it...agreed with the assessment really. It was enough to make the younger man bite his lower lip at first, though he'd soon enough push himself back to an expression of neutral analysis of what was being said. Not a peep left his lips, all things considered.

His own sacrifice was one thing, as an independent party working with Apple in the end, but so many of Apple had run into help Logic Driver that it had exposed their entire backline to destruction and concentrated them in one plce. Yet Lucius himself was guilty of the same actions, to enough of an extent, and that much wasn't something he was totally blind to. He didn't regret his actions, but it was also something the enemy could exploit. What was the old saying his old CO back home had said? 'They won't be afraid to cripple one to take out many. Avoid killing one, and you take out two others who come to help drag them off the battlefield.' Something like that. Had this been a realm battle, Lucius would have had to choose between sacrificing a comrade and potentially getting a kill in on the enemy. Save one life...and maybe lose many others because of that one.

...

...

Then again, on a slightly lighter note, he raised an eyebrow and looked over in the direction of Arrish as it was mentioned that the man had been the one to turn Mr. Pink's mech into...well...being pink. Meddling with the simulation. That much felt like a breath of fresher air. Stupid. Funny. Yet also strange and peculiar as a choice as far as he knew about anything and anyone here thus far. Enough to piss off the brass as well if this had been a more strict training simulation to boot.

Next came Cadet Liu'un, the pilot of Logic Driver, who seemed to hold back tears or such after an initially somewhat shocked-looking expression (to his eyes at least) at the footage being displayed of her movements. Stealth. That had been her forte. Stealth and intel. Get in closer, get information, relay to allies, and then retreat or such. That was what came to his mind. And yet she had charged far ahead, and the pinkified mech that had then taken her legs after exposing her using-...hmm? A drone self-detonating on the ground? Perhaps a disruptive measure to help disable her stealth, yes? It was clever of Mr. Pink...same voice that had made him the offer from Team Mango as well. Sharp. Brutal, but effective. And the pink mech had survived much until closer to the end.

Though as Lorenzo moved on, mainly to the grumpy man he'd seen playing a game outside of the sim who was also one 'Cadet Zel-Ghin', he did feel some measure of agreement with the assessment between the roasting and the footage displayed. A vanguard was someone near the front, but go out too far from your squad? It would spell disaster if the enemy could surround and bog you down. That much he'd been taught prior to this, and gotten to witness firsthand in the simulations back home accordingly and in the very practical sense. But recklessness, which seemed to be something Cadet Gene had been chided for, was something she at least seemed to recognize here in hindsight versus how the actions of Zel-Ghin spoke for themselves.

And now that he looked at the next person to be addressed, the brother of Zel-Ghin and the man who he'd spoken with for Team Apple, one 'Cadet Mema-ka'. Another who had run off to rescue Logic Driver, it seemed, and yet he had indeed made a similar mistake in the simulation. Recklessness. Less so overall, it seemed, and yet enough that he had also contributed to the Sleeping Thunder's exposure to Mother Goose. And recklessly charging in to suicide into Mr. Pink? It shocked him more that Mr. Pink would have done such a thing, even if it did look rather cool to see the hijacked Kattai make him into a pink octo-mosnter to some extent, but even the seemingly more level-headed and noble-mannered Mema-ka seemed to be just as reckless when the situation was right perhaps. Hmm. Then again, it was all a simulation, and perhaps that had also been in the mind of those being roasted for their actions thus far as well.

Noted.

Meanwhile the winner of the simulation, the sole surviving who had piloted the Guinevere, one 'Cadet Quinn', seemed to not be any less roasted despite his 'win' in the end. Indeed, he'd sustained the least damage by hiding about with stealth and so forth, but he had been restrained. Held back from the looks of it. While it made sense to not expose one's self as a stealth unit and attempt to help from there as Logic Driver seemingly should have done, he supposed, if you didn't do anything to assist the team then it the burden was being concentrated on a smaller portion of the team. There was perhaps a difference in 'helping from farther back' and 'being unable to take an action due to actual circumstance' and frankly 'total inaction' perhaps. Not doing something, hesitating, that could get you killed as much as-...yeah. What he and Duval had done was reckless enough as it was. At least it was for a cause, unlike what seemed to be the sitiuation for Zel-Ghin, but it was still something to keep in mind.

And the muscular, complaining blonde man that he had heard rather clearly upon the man's exit from the simulation? Somehow the least-roasted of them all thus far. Somehow? It for some reason felt off, but given he'd kept supporting and not run off like Mema-Ka and Cadet Duval had? He had kept to the strategy it seemed. Solid, as far as putting it through the filter of what training he'd had thus far.

Meanwhile the winged alien woman seemed to be just as little-roasted as the prior 'Cadet Burnhardt' had been. Stayed in closer, kept in range, and yet her positioning had been part of her undoing it would seem. Battlefield was a place rife with the unexpexted, it would seem, so even doing things 'right enough' could still see you taken down perhaps. Another important fact to take note of, it seemed.

“Cadet Sterling-"
The Old Fruit Bat

As his name was called, Lucius' eyes snapped tightly onto the older man. This was it. This was the moment to use to emphasize the other critiques that had been delivered thus far to some of the others. He felt it in his bones. He had not only cast aside his own primary stated goal, but had flung himself at what Lorenzo continued to dub a 'lost cause', both to his acknowledgement and partial but still real internal frustration at it all, and gotten split in two. Literally. So it was only time to brace himself for-

"-you failed your mission objective of staying alive as Team Banana. However, you performed adequately when faced with overwhelming odds. Your drone setup was commendable, as was your vantage point for taking on team Mango. You likely would have done better with a proper team backing you up. Ten points and a parrot sticker for you.”
The Old Fruit Bat

...Lucius' bottom jaw visibly dropped open without a sound. He tried to restain himself despite his failure, and yet it was clear enough to see: Genuine shock, for what time it lasted, until he managed to pull himself together again shortly thereafter. Y-Yes he'd tried to get a good position, get things in place, arrange his drones for an assault on two targets, etc, but he'd-...and Duval had-...but-...HOW WAS THAT ALL THE OLD MAN WAS GOING TO SAY TO HIM?! Where was the angry roasting of his white-knighting? Where was the flicker of condemnation for his goofing off in taking one deal or othe other or not? Of trying to help a 'lost cause'??? Sure it would have been better if he'd had a team backing him, er, if he'd been on a team in the first place and not alone really. Sure, that did make sense.

A right hand came up to the younger man's own head for a moment. It made the lingering sensations of the prior vision seem to go away like it was a cloud of faint dust exposed to gale force winds. Yet it felt like a sudden shock to the system. Or perhaps he'd become accustomed to being fussed at over mistakes enough that this just felt strange as it is. Did he want to get yelled at? Er, he had come in expecting the worst. Perhaps too much so? Not that he didn't need to continue to recognize the faults in his actions all the same, whether he held regrets for some of those or not. Made his head hurt a little, it all did, even if breifly.

Still, things moved on from there well enough it would seem. Cadet Briars, the woman he'd first approached, the pilot of the Sleeping Thunder, made some sense as well as he tried to refocus on the critiques once more. She had performed well on the backline, providing support and then having to deal with half her team leaving in a heartbeat to elsewhere without protecting their high-firepower backliner. Lorenzo even commented on what had been visible even to him on the simulation: The fury she had dumped out onto the battlefield when approached by certain death in the form of the Mother Goose. He couldn't fully know what had been going through her head, though he could at least attempt to imagine it at least, and yet while his gut panged with genuine empathy again he also could recognize what was being said to her as well. It was another thing from his lengthy 'preparation' for being sent here that he'd been told over and over again alongside the others there.

Meanwhile the stoic-seeming man with the black helmet had his own critique, as short and having some amount of praise in it as it was still brutal to have seen him squished by the Goose. Then again, where one was standing and positioning was important. This reinforced that even more so alongside a need to be 'aware' on the battlefield. Beyond that, the critique of the Lilim piloting the Mother Goose was even more succinct and a note of her being tricked, apparently, by the blue-haired girl to-...wait she'd gotten the Goose to toss her in the air before going kamikaze on the Electric Dragonfly? Huh.

Cadet Lane, the woman who had killed him, at last had more to her critique than the prior two. Skillful, maneuvering and handling herself well on the battlefield, and yet taking seemingly unessecary actions like retreating back when she could have pursued. Hindsight was certainly a teacher, yes, but the heat of the moment also left a person having to think on their feet. Same for him and everyone else. Sticking to a general strategy, battle goal, and plans were good, that much was all true it seemed, but getting too focused on one thing could be blinding as well. Right. That would be yet another mental note he hoped to, if he was lucky, begin to internalize before he got himself and others killed out there...

Manwhile Mr. Pink himself, one 'Cadet Bugatti', seemed to be the last to be addresed properly. Well, after being reminded to make a passing remark about the Argo's pilot as if he hadn't seen her there in the room with the rest of them. Sure the man was older, maybe a touch senile for all Lucius knew, but to totally ignore a pilot in the room despite it all hadn't been a thing he'd done prior to Cadet Minerva here. It was almost thoughtless what he'd said. A mere compliment and being seemingly happy to move on. Now that, that much was also rather strange. Seemingly more deliberate, perhaps?

At least Mr. Pi-, er, Cadet Bugatti seemed to be the old man's favorite for everything he'd done it would seem. The mess before battle, the taunting, the crippling of the Logic Driver, the mechanical mosntrosity (that was still kinda cool), etc. It made part of him feel a reflexible burst of something in his gut, something...unpleasant. Judging. Dark. Perhaps disgust? Ritsu seemed to be a bit opposite of the good doctor's judgements as well to some extent, from the looks of it, and yet all the same Lucius had seen the man in action. He'd survived, thrived, and made it much farther along than Lucius himself had. Pragmatic. Ruthless. Yes. Effective, something some CO might praise under the right circumstances, and yet it felt just as sketchy a set of traits as Lorenzo said it was useful out there 'had they all had a bit of that' in them too as it were.

...Just breathe. If he was going to live, if any of them were, it would be good to learn from all of this. Not just the parts that sounded good, or the people he felt a closer initial liking toward thus far with the most meager of first impressions. Not that some impressions hadn't made a more notable one that is.

Even so, it came as no surprise to him that Cadet Bugatti was the secondary squad leader. What surprised him most was Cadet Lane being given the main position as the primary squad leader. Then again, he didn't know her as much. Nor did he know Mr. Pink as much, though he'd gotten more of an impression of him than Cadet Lane at least thus far for what it was worth.

Everyone's responses afterwards, then, seemed evident enough as they either erupted out or popped up bit by bit. Cadet Burnhardt congradulated the captain, only to erupt into a retort against much of what was said. A very much human response that partly spoke to his own sensibilities, and yet sounded in some part ignorant and prejudiced enough so at the same time to a certain extent. Blind to the reality. Meanwhile it at least got him some more of the other Cadets' first names, if nothing else, though the buffer man's almost-tearing-up eyes certianly spoke to his own emotional volatility in turn. Seemed compliments to his own performance mattered less than the critique of teammates. Meanhile Serah, Cadet Gene it seemed, was at least responsive to her critique as she tried to assuage the muscular man who had said he was literally going to walk himself to the brig now.

"Just one thing, though, professor,” Serah would cast her attention to Lorenzo, intending to follow up with a remark of her own. "What's the point of making us fight each-other, if you don't want us to get ourselves killed? We had a rrreeeeeaaaaaallly close match there.”
Serah

"Er, may I perhaps comment about my thoughts on that for a moment?"

He tried to be polite about the matter, raising his left hand to try to respond after Serah had made her last comments. He didn't mean ill by it, and hoped it wouldn't come off as such. He did look between Serah, Lorenzo, and Ritsu for a moment to see if it would be ok in this scenario. But if he was allowed to speak, he would rest his elbows on the table before them, let his hands cross each other in a relaxed maner, and say the following:

"Getting an idea of how everyone behaves in a combat scenario could be one important thing to learn. Seeing how people react, take action or don't take action, what kind of strategies they use thinking on their feet, actions they take under pressure, and so forth. Sure it's a sim, and we don't actually die, but the feedback and actions taken can be very telling of what people do in various situations and under pressure. See how well some people work together and all of that as well.

I don't doubt the real thing will be a lot more pressuring than this, but this sort of thing is perhaps meant to help us figure out how to better work with, and around, each other out there. And perhaps even expose potential issues, ones to try to iron out a bit as a team at least, before we get in the field properly and could die for real."

Though Lucius would lean a bit closer toward Serah's sitting position before dropping one last hushed line in this scenario, the tiniest pull up on the edges of his mouth occuring as he would do this.

"Pretty cool exit you made, by the way, despite what I just said. Big BOOM good."

...Sure the serious ramifications were something to keep in mind, always, but it didn't mean a giant explosion didn't look very cool in the simulation all the same. And he didn't want to sound like just a Lorenzo-enjoyer or something of the sort. Plus he wanted to know if his own thoughts on the matter were valid enough as it was in the official sense, maybe, or if he also needed more of a reality check as it was. That and it would be nice to not be too serious all of the time. Today was already stressful enough for him, as it perhaps could have been for the others, so why not appreciate a bit of BIG BOOM for what it was worth in the simulation too? Just on the side.

Then came Mema-Ka, erupting into his own more lengthy thoughts and reactions to the critiques given was its own small novel's worth. Not that it didn't seem as if he had some points, as he tried to listen to what was being said on the side, but at the same time someone else would gain his attention more so as the reactions to things continued onwards.

"BAHAHAHAA"

"... A Parrot Sticker! You've got to be pft-snrk-pft-bahahahahaha"

Well someone was getting a kick out of all of this, more or less, and it seemed to be one "Arrish Duval" if he'd managed up properly pick up the pieces of others' names taht had been mentioned by now. Man seemed to then hold himself like a noble, similar to how he felt upon seeing Mema-Ka outside of the simulation thus far really, and flirted with Cadet Briars before addressing the room at large. But a steak dinner?! Wait, could this man cook a steak dinner? Or was he going to have someone come in and make one? For his part, though, Lucius would raise a hand for Arrish to see. A silent nod would be given thereafter. Steak dinner? Could be a good chance to see and talk and learn more about his new teammates, if not at least some more of the Team Mango side depending on what the other Team Apple members did.

...Plus steak was a rather rare occasion for one such as himself too.

As for others? Cadet Lane seemed to shut herself up from speaking as he glanced around the room once more, before taking her armband and tasers finally before semingly speaking to Ritsu, Zel-Ghin seemed as self-absorbed as he could, and the Tevranian woman seemed to get exxited at the prospects of steak as well. Meanwhile the sole survivor of the sim seemed to want to ask something of the professor as well.

All in all? All of these things felt more lively than the seriousness of the simulation battle at the very least. But it was a lot to process, a lot to think on, and the fact remained that he'd barely just gotten here before all of this. Literally. And he-....he had a chocolate bar waiting for him once he changed back. A mint condition, non-pocket-melted, safe and sound, guava-filled chocolate bar from a decent brand at that.

Heh. Perhaps it was something to enjoy now, or perhaps to share with another late, or perhaps to trade for a story and someone else's time. Who knew, but he looked forward to it all the same now! But the grumpy old man still needed to give him that parrot sticker as well, unless his Lilim had to hide them so he couldn't try to eat them or something. Ha.

Minerva

Minerva shrugged off the weird feeling the someone is listening on her as prepared herself for the lecture, it's been a while since she got chewed out it was when she is just starting out after Olympus fell...

No use recalling those memories.

She prepared herself to the praise, to the criticism and even insults that might be thrown to her face. She can take it, she tells herself as every pilot got listed down.

“...I suppose you performed well enough.”

Only for it to turn out to be nothing, he didn't have words for her.

Not even a gaze.

Something within Minerva begins to boil, anger would too much and irritation doesn't feel right. She is not a fool, she knew there is something wrong with the way he looks at her. At first she thought it was anger but it turns out to be contempt instead.

No she will not stand for this and if he is not going to take a step then she will.

Letting out a deep breath, Minerva would then tune out Griff making a fool of herself before quietly walking to the old man. Frustrated face visible as she uses her frustration to ask one question.

"What is your problem with me specifically? Is my origin such an affront to you you couldn't look at me enough to provide criticism?"

+}Taking Notes{+

By the time Aurora had led Arrish into the debriefing room and had sat down she could feel the last of the adrenaline leave her system. Feel the world turn just a bit fuzzier as she came down from the surge of combat.

She was already set up by that point however. Her pad was before her, her trusty note app open and ready. And though she startled at the Professors abrupt beginning, it didn’t hinder her as she began to transcribe what it was, he said.

‘Not to self; Seek to acquired personal copy of Sim records.’
Self Log

Even as a soft frown over took her features as she wrote.

Overall there were shades of truth in the older man’s words. Serah’s recklessness, Elora’s fault. Squid’s Pilot’s overconfidence. And Griff’s shocking level of co-operation. But it was cruelly put, designed to cut and dig.

Even Aurora own actions were painted in as unflattering a light as possible. And while she was moderately embarrassed when her own turn to be taken to task came up, thus having her actions in the cockpit displayed for all. She couldn’t help but wonder as well. ‘If this is how he feels about me, I can only imagine how he will react to Sleepy when they are actively in a mood.’

Rational she could agree with, but she would not temper her feelings for a crotchy old man.

‘Note to self; Full depth Sim logs if you acquire them. Lag spike during Sleepy’s parting retaliation suspect.’
Self Log

Over all it reinforced her feeling that anything the man said should be taken with a fair side of salt.

Especially when it was clear by how he over looked Argo’s Pilot, easily one of the more dangerous and effective units on the field. A fact corroborated by the man’s lack of anything to say about their performance.

Nodding to herself at the choice of who got promoted to Squad leader. Considering how well Mango came together, as well as the skills, both technical and tactical on display it made sense. There was a part of her chafed at being over looked. She had been raised for more, tutored and guided for leadership. But like so much, it had all turned to ash now. And with earned practice she turned aside her stung pride.

Instead, she went over the transcript again now that the man was done talking. Adding her own thoughts and feelings to the mix. It would be important later she knew. So best to do so while everything was still fresh.

‘Note to self; prep flash pings for Cockroach and Argent.’
Self Log

Still she kept an ear open as the rest of the cadets spoke up in regards to all that was said. Griff, surprised her, not at his tactical analysis. That went about how she expected it to go. But he still managed to hit the underlying reason Apple lost. Mango simply acted as a better team. Maybe not from the start, but by the end for sure.

She was surprised that he recognized his own outburst was misplaced, and made sure to add those notes to her other files.

Moving on it was good to hear that Serah at least recognized her own faults. And she raised a valid question, though Aurora doubted the Professor would give a straight answer.

She also heavily disagreed with Mema-Ka. The Kattai’s mishmash of Cockroach and Squid might have been a threat, but it was a glass one as well. A sustained gunline, which Raptor could have been with Logic’s assistance, and their drones could have just as easily taken it out. Especially if Mema-Ka could drone strike with their attack drones.

‘Not to self; write and pass around drone strike executable for squad mates.’
Self Log

But tactics are easy with hindsight. Aurora disagreed primarily because he was assigned as XO, and then immediately abandoned his team mates.

Aurora was taken aback by Arrish’s sudden burst of laughter. What had set him off and why she had no idea. But clearly, he wasn’t willing to let a lost training exercise ruin his mood. And honestly, she agreed with him. Yes, Apple lost, and Mango won. But now? Now all of them were on the same team.

Which meant everything she had fought against, was now on her side, and everyone she had fought with had that much more of an idea of how to work against the Cruxi. And it was going to be glorious.

“I will be sure to attend.” She would tell Arrish as he stood ready and waiting. “I have some post mission routines I would like to perform, but nothing that should keep me from making it to the team dinner.”

‘Note to self; check recipe after dinner for nutrition log.’
Self Log

And it was clear that she wasn’t the only one ready to start wrapping up. With how both Arrish and Squid’s pilot left. Aurora was planning on staying for at least a few more minuets to see how Lorenzo replied to the questions posed to him.

Something that proved to be worth it, as hearing from Rex’s Pilot gave her, her first insights into the sole member of team Banana. Relaxed, and aware of at least one avenue of thought. She was disappointed though, seeing as she felt the odds of the Professor answering with the full though even less now than she did when Serah first asked her question.

And then came the question from Argo’s Pilot. With it’s much more understandable frustrations, and much more ominous wordings.

‘Note to self; Further research required on Argo and Pilot. Expanded access might be needed to bypass classifieds.’

Astolfo kept struggling to steady himself at first, while he listened. The body eventually calmed and settled down, as he looked at the whole debriefing. More like a systematic butchering of the pilots, just like the horror child of a drill sergeant and a mad scientist, Lorenz kept tossing cynical remarks and some praise, just enough to make people to think hard about what they had done, but not enough to doubt themselves.

For the most part, really.

He had smiled at him. His ruthlessness. He had been right about the first impression of that man, even as tainted as it was for Astolfo's choice of literature. Lorenzo was too, captain Ahab. And the Cruxi were his white whale. He had the face of a man who would strike a sun if it offended him.

"Ten points and a parrot sticker". The odd phrase stood out. A surprising evaluation from Lorenzo towards the cheeky boy who had decided to try and play sides to get the best out of the situation by riling someone. He guessed that matched his preference for disruption.

His words had a prompt reaction on the clanker, though, given how she stood up, rummaged around her equipment, and produced...out of all things, a *vividly colored parrot sticker* which she then attached to Lucius' suit, before giving him a complementary headpat. Her attention quickly turned to Lorenzo's coughing in concern, but she seemed to stop within a single glance of Lise. Knowing how Lilim work, Lise probably gave the older Lilim a full reassuring conversation.

He kept listening to the comments, and complaints. Obviously not everyone was going to be happy with the choices, or the drive the old man would impart. His counterweight, the lovely lieutenant Ritsu did sigh a few times. Mostly when referring to him. Well, he could live with his superior's scorn for a while, as long it did not interfer with operations.

Some of them raised valid questions. The rabbit girl for example, voiced a thought Bug had about the whole sim. What was the point? To see that everyone sucked? Esprit de corps? It was a good as a guess as he could get. He was less so impressed about Griff and Mema's outbursts. Griff was pure stupid meathead rant, and that was something worth to be ignored. Mema however, struck a deep chord on how particularly wrong it sounded. Not choosing a comrade shield to shield instead of going solo against him, and then doubling down that he had been right, spoke of a great threat lurking beneath the surface. Mema-ka was possibly a narcissist who didn't even see anyone but that slobbery thing of his brother at their same level, merely puppets to be used. That didn't seem good.

Oddly familiar and revolting in any case.

He weighed the taser in his hand as he fitted his armband. "I am honored." He said, before saluting the hesitating Ava and his superior officers, offering a small smirk. "Well, looks like I'll be allowed and enforced to do this, senior." He replied playfully to Ava Lane. Deep inside, a melancholic chord struck. The last time he had been handed a batton of command, he had bled his own country in a civil war he had lost, and become crippled...and he had been chosen as sub leader. His hand gripped the taser as he put it back into its holster.

That was when someone he had not expected to break, broke. Minerva. And someone who had expected to reply a bit and even chastise his teammates, stood silent. Aurora.

Oh, and was there someone else yet to speak? Jerry or something? Like a helmet guy? Probably not important.

The hard wall she was putting was starting to crack. Some of it had it been his fault. He saw her approach and wondered if the husky puppy would be the first target of discipline from him. He had hoped not, as the situation between the two was iron hot. He looked at Ava, who was still a bit shocked she had been elected as squad leader. He'd have to talk to her about this later. Hopefully with a meal paired with good wine.

But for now, it was time to quench the tempers, and steer them in another direction. And he could do that. He put a hand in her shoulder. "Cadet Minerva. Your evaluation is fine. Whatever..personal issues are there, there is a time and place for it, okay?". He tried to said reassuringly. "The Executive Officer is a busy man, and he might not...be able to spare more time for such counselling. If you got any further concerns, me and senior Ava will be there to hear them. I'll reiterate you did a terrific job, and so most of the ones here would say so." Bug tried to reassure Minerva.

I know how is it to feel to be ignored and treated like an accessory, but don't confront that man directly. He is far beyond you can handle right now. I can just feel it. Bug thought, as he tried to pry Minerva's attention from Lorenzo.

His sight rested on Aurora for a moment. He had to talk with that one, at some point. Maybe over the dinner. In case he would not be able to bring Ava in the fold, Aurora could step in. A little convincing would be needed for her to act as plan B, but potato, potato.

Speaking of headhunting. Elora was in the list. Being the outrageous tactics guy meant reading and processing a lot of info. If she could get in the fold, and if her information analyst vocation was truly what she wanted, this could help speed things up.

He looked at Ritsu and Lorenzo one last time, a sly smirk on his face.Well, let me abuse your confidence in absurd tactics, professor.

"Steaks, Arrish?" He finally said to the redheaded knight. "Didn't you hear our executive officer? We don't deserve steaks. We are a bunch of single celled organisms. Primeval ooze. Parasites on the taxpayers federation coffers. You don't need steaks for those. You need something that can disinfect." Bug would cackle so slightly.

"DRINKS ARE ON ME YOU FELLOW FOOLS!" He raised his tone as he smirked. "And bring the engineering crew! They also need a drink after seeing our pathetic performance, don't you think? Unless you don't think you can handle treating the engineering crew...and our superior officers to steaks too Arrish!"

The clanker moved once again, before making eye contact with Bug. "This one promised strawberry cake to Liu'un. Elora. This unit will scale up the operation so that all her friends get cake."

"Well, I guess we'll have to forage more ingredients them. Send me a list and coordinate with Steak Knight over there." Bug would then say.

Jake just sat quietly while everything was happening...but truth be told, his "stealth" really allowed him to go unnoticed for the most part or up until Lorenzo gave his evaluation on everyone's performance during the VR simulation which included himself. And he was right...while he did perform well, he "awareness" wasn't as sharp where he made rookie mistakes.

Still...dead is dead...if that were real...

Then there was the decision for who the squad leaders were named...and one of them was his main concern. Even if Bugatti was second in command squad leader...

No. Don't question it...not now anywa-

Then his outburst when he heard him say that he was going to buy drinks for everyone.

THAT'S when Jake felt it was just time to make himself disappear back to the hangar bay...hopefully without anyone noticing. He felt that right now is a bad idea to socialize with this many people.

...

...

...that and he didn't drink.

Lorenzo’s expression did not shift as Griff was the first one to speak up, only met with a couple of heavy blinks. However, Elora was more affected, and placed a hand on her chest, her eyes averted as she blushed at the words of praise from the muscular man, feeling like she didn’t truly deserve it. Then, as Griff was about to head out, he was stopped by Serah of all people, eliciting a raised eyebrow from Ritsu. Lorenzo answered: “Hate me if you must, that is of no concern to me. But know this, Cadet Burnhardt: this is me at my kindest, giving you lot advice like this. You would not like to see how much of a jerk I can be,” he spoke, his subtle threat having been understood based on the tension that had built in the room. "But no need to go to the brig. That place stops being a punishment if you're so eager for it, lad."

Lorenzo then smirked as Lucius soon interjected, and nodded along with the young man’s analysis. “The Banana laddy’s not all monkey business, it seems. Right-o’, boyo.” He now dragged his eye to Serah. “I did mention this before, but a pilot’s true character is only truly known at the moment they clash with another. If I had you fight a virtual mission against Cruxi, you would only have learned how to pilot your own Frame better. But when opposed to your fellow comrade, you were forced to face their strengths, their weaknesses, and how they think when put to the test. Such knowledge is vital if you are to fight as a cohesive unit out on the battlefield. And who knows, maybe that knowledge can save your life,” he added in an absent-minded mumble as he briefly took a look at his papers.

However, while Lorenzo seemed almost pleased with lecturing Serah, his demeanour was considerably soured as Mema-Ka gave his explanation. Even Ritsu adjusted her glasses more out of wanting to distract herself than actually needing to reposition them. “There is upholding the chain of command, and there is also tactical sense. Only fools blindly follow orders without comprehending the ramifications they have. That said, the burden of blame is partially on Cadet Briars for giving the order in the first place. However, that is not an excuse for tunnel vision! You’re a smart lad, you can think for yerself.”

He then brought back the footage of Mema engaging the dreadful reanimation of Crockroach. “The Cocksquid was far enough for defensive action to be taken before it would have approached within melee range. Besides, you put too little faith in your Framewerk, boy. They are not mere tools to be thrown away.” He slammed his hands on the podium, knocking over yet another research paper which Liisa diligently cleaned up. “They are the mighty swords of humanity, cutting down the Cruxi menace once and for all! You better give them respect! Or do I have to beat some into ya, laddie?” He stroked his beard with an evil grin.
“But it did give me an idea. There is a theoretical model I designed on a whim in VR…The Cruxi Fister. The team of Frames who can best me using that Frame gets to have a little favor granted to them. But if you lose, I’ll use the footage as lecture material, haha!” Ritsu blinked, clearly not having been ready to hear that announcement, but Lorenzo had already moved his attention to Arrish, who had interrupted with his boisterous laughter. He then announced a celebration with steak as part of the catering, to which Lorenzo nodded along with a stroke of his moustache.
“Hmm…I suppose you lads and lasses earned it. Lieutenant, see to any paperwork needed for it.” Ritsu’s eye twitched, but she immediately took out her device, and glanced as Arrish then left the room. “Yes, sir.”

Lorenzo nodded to Ava’s request. “Of course, Cadet Lane…Or should I say Corporal Lane now? I know you military types like your ranks, so I suppose I’ll give you and Bugatti a new one.” The old man, with a chuckle, next focused on Sparks, having ignored Zel-Ghin’s departure from the room.
“Hmm, yes, you can,” Lorenzo answered, followed by a sharp lift of a finger skyward. “You Metal Minds must be rearing to get to cranking again. But any changes must be approved before they will be integrated. You know the forms to get your requests approved, like the OOCGM protocol and so on. Oh, that reminds me,” Lorenzo turned back and snatched a paper from Liisa, who offered it to the man as if expecting his actions.

The old man turned around, and poked at the paper. “In light of this recent training, I have deemed an update to weapon systems acceptable. You may send in requests to have a single weapon system swapped out for another, restricted to system category. For example, you can swap a Primary System for another Primary, or a Secondary for another one of the latter. However, I’ll only allow systems from the standard list for swapping: can’t spend all of the budget on fuzzy dice and other customized nonsense.”

Elora, who up until that moment had quietly listened, blinked, as if woken by Lorenzo’s suggestion. “Oh, I know what I would wan-”

The entire room went quiet in a flash as Minerva, having reached the end of her patience, confronted Lorenzo. “Cadet!” Ritsu shouted out, outraged. The old man slowly turned towards her, as if he had only just now noticed her there. However, a sharp eye could tell that it was a mere facade: he had been completely aware of the Project Olympus prodigy since the very beginning of the evaluation, his eyes glaring at the young woman. Ritsu warily tapped her fingers on the top of her holster.

However, as Lorenzo was about to speak, Bug had intervened, and defused the situation before it had a chance to escalate. The old man nodded to Bug in approval, and then glanced towards Minerva.
“Cadet…Minerva…” He extended the words, with some subtle difficulty speaking the words out. “You should be grateful to Corporal Bugatti…he had quickly taken to his new responsibilities, babysitting you lot,” he spoke jokingly. However, his eyes lacked any humor in them. “In any case, I’ll let you off with a warning this time. But the next time you speak to me like that…” His eyes tightened, the gaze in them like fire. “You’re going to the brig. I won’t tolerate such rude behavior towards me again…even from an inheritor to Her will. Understood?”

He looked down at his papers, as if waiting for Minerva to turn and walk away. But after a moment, he then looked back up at her. “...You were too reckless on the battlefield and got surrounded by the enemy when you should have stayed closer to your unit. There, the criticism you so love,” he added, as if to spite her. The mood, which had turned dark, soon brightened as Bugatti announced a round of drinks, and Elora lifted her elbows up in mild excitement upon hearing Stella mention the cake. “Oh, that sounds amazing! And, um, I guess I could have a sip…” she added afterwards awkwardly.

“...She never wanted to hear criticism,” Lorenzo mumbled in a half-breath as he grabbed his papers from the podium, preparing to leave. Ritsu saluted the group. “That is all. Aside from Corporal Lane, the rest may be dismissed.” “So, lassie, what’s on yer mind?” The old man asked as he tucked the papers haphazardly under his arm and took his walking cane.

Elora patiently waited for Bug to finish whatever he was busy with in the briefing room, and spent the time gaming with her device. As Bugatti finally walked out of the room, she glanced at him, gulped, and then spoke: “Um, mister Bugatti…Serah told me that you were going to give her some kind of present, but she wanted me to have it instead. She said she would, um, ‘forgive you for making fun of her’ if you do,” she clarified afterwards, making a surprisingly competent impression of the shorter girl.
