Yeah I could never imagine a film doing the opposite.

Question: if notorious white male, M. Night Shayamalan, casts an Indian actor for an originally Japanese character, is that........ I'm trying to think of a parallel for "white washing" that don't sound pejorative, but I can't do it. But.... yeah.

MY LARGER POINT BEING THOUGH, WHO EFFING CARES?

A movie adaptation is not meant to be a line-for-line reproduction of the source material, or what was the goddamn point of a movie adaptation? You, yes, you, go be a director and cast whoever you want for whatever you want. If you make a good movie I'll pay you money. Deal?

Sometimes people can creatively use changing race and gender to good effect.

I went to see a play when I was in Chicago based on the H.P Lovecraft story The Shadow over Innsmouth (talk about your horror of racial blending motiff). The changed the view point character from male to female and it really made the themes pop in a new way.

I dont have a problem with races being changed up. It is great to see so many more characters who aren't vanilla white guy, whether they always pull it off or not. I haven't read the Dark Tower (yet) so I don't know how core Roland's whiteness is to the plot. If it is a kind of weird Sci-fi as I have heard, I would imagine not very.

see that's the thing I hate (almost). When I choose to interpret this in the most offensive way possible, that's the thing I hate.

I suspect that what you mean is, it's nice that more than just white people have a chance to be hollywood stars now. TOTES AGREE! That's awesome!

But if I were to assume all the worst possible things about that sentence, it reads like "Weeeeelll he couldn't really act, but hey, at least he wasn't white, so 8/10!" and that would be horseshit.

That sentence should have read: It is great to see so many more characters who aren't vanilla white guy, whether they always pull it off or not is a different question.

but apparently I'm doing too many things at once. Actors of any ethnicity can be poorly cast or fail at their roles but its nice to see the diversity content slowly increasing.

There are movies where historical circumstances dictate a certain ethnicity of actor of course. It would be kind of hard to do a Civil War story where all the Southern Generals were actually Chinese. Although if you had the right script and director...

Now that is true! One movie that did that well was Law Abiding Citizen. It's one of my favorite movies, and initially they were going to have Jamie Foxx as the bad guy, and Gerard Butler as the hero. But Jamie Foxx thought it would be cool to have Gerard Butler, known as the guy from 300 (this was a 2009 movie) to be the hammy villain, and they did it.

I cannot imagine it any other way, now.

Honestly that's the reason I'm against it somewhat, now. People went too extreme with it, and I realized that they should just be fair with it, rather than going "white=bad."

There's an angry African American woman main character that often refers to Roland as honkey and white boy so I mean there's that.

Detta always reminded me of those 24/7 pissed of black girls who seem to rail against white men all the time but could not for the life of them resist dating them.

Butler is still the protagonist, though. He exerts vengeance upon a broken justice system, which Foxx's character supports.

Might wanna watch it again XD. I think Foxx was completely against him, and Butler killed innocent people to prove a point.

I'm just glad Steven Moffat is going away. Presumably to fuck up more modern takes on classic literary characters.

Agreed. I mean I'm straight, but I'm not that straight. Anyone who says otherwise is lying.
