So, like, I remember, way back when, I tried to join this medieval GOT-ish court-intrigue sort of RP. I had, like, just joined the site. I was a terrible writer, somehow even worse than I am now, and I was really bad at creating characters. There was a pre-set cast with different roles you could create characters for. One of those, IIRC, was called "Brother to the King of Seabel." I wanted that goddamn role. I spent, like, four hours creating the blandest, cliche, most boring grey stain of a character you ever did see. Well, some other guy who I can't remember, made a bomb-ass sheet. They knocked it out of the park, really. Way better character. So, naturally, the GM chose the other character and I, being the high-strung emotional mess that I was 2 or 3 years ago, took it personally. I bitched. I moaned. I was offered a chance to play a different role. I declined, because I'd "spent so much time on the character." The person who made the better character offered to apply for a different role. I told them no because I had started to realize I was making an ass of myself and wanted to leave with my ego in tact.

So, to the person who made the better brother to the king, and to the person that GM'd that. Sorry about that one, guys.

It's just one of those things that makes me wish I hadn't joined the site until, like, a year ago. I really wasn't cut out to handle post deadlines, rejection, criticism, or any factor of the whole experience, really.

Anyway, not sure how to make this a discussion. Anyone else have any cringy, early-career stories? Or, better yet, was anyone in that RP who remembers this?

Oh god. Cringe RP stories? Dozens.

My very first character, created for the very first RP I'd taken part in, a massive video-game/anime crossover RP run by a bunch of my fellow 13 year olds, was the personification of pure garbage. If I recall, I'd not only suggested that it was stronger than every other character in the RP repeatedly, but I would constantly 'anime vanish', auto hit, and spam ellipsis without restraint. I do not miss being 13. Ultimately, my cyborg-demon-inter-dimensional-god character was banned and I was shunned multiple times by the community on the site wherein it took place. Needless to say, I've learned a lot since then, lmao.

When Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories first revealed the Organization XIII members, there were a lot of 14th member OCs. Like a lot. And this was also before Kingdom Hearts 2 came out. So naturally an RP based on the 'lost members' starting with number 14 and going almost all the way to 30 iirc. We called ourselves 'The Exiled' and it was just...amazing and terrible and in hindsight it was just hilarious. Great people though, lost contact with most but some did keep in touch over the years.

Oh dear...I have a lot of stories that are almost impossible to describe how bad they really were without getting so long, no one sane would read it...

And oddly enough, I have an example where everyone was a good writer but damn we just made a fucking train wreck of a story...it was kind of everyone's fault in a way. It was a slice of life plot-line, basically a super natural creature inherited a huge mansion of sorts and decided to invited a bunch of them to move in with her and split the rent, so she could make friends and keep her home. Sounds fairly straightforward...however that somehow turned into a more disturbing version of twilight? With possibly more hateable and stupid characters?

It's almost turned infamous joke of me and my roommate, who I tortured and read it too over the phone, because he asked. :D

In short, this story became a girl (Grace).

A hopelessly stupid and useless girl.

(She spent days in the rain crying in an random alleyway because her uncle wouldn't "love" her. And she also just laid down in a field crying while her house and friends were being attacked and killed. My point being, she might have actually been a bigger nuisance than Bella in the twilight movies. <.<)

That had a werewolf and vampire that constantly was with her, the werewolf tried to protect her and treat her right and the vampire attempted to kill her several times and use her for his own gain. Do you even have to ask who she choose? This vampire was also her, way older, uncle...<.<

And when the villains appeared, having one very stupid main goal (that really didn't make much sense) and one with the power to control dragons. So the only not awful person in the RP, the werewolf, who is raising a dragon child. Almost every time he's faced with the villain, what does he do? Bring the dragon with him...which literally always goes wrong. And there's just so many more stupid things that happened, it would last forever with everything I could bring up... I'd say all of it was intentional in some way...but I don't think any of it was. -.-

Ironically, had the exact same people in other RP's that went perfectly fine. I guess even good role-players can just straight up, lose the plot and their minds and write a love story, that could possibly be worse than Twilight.

And ten months ago...

I'll start in sharing two quick particular experiences. Both with my roommate and his cousin, bless their souls, but they had a plethora of fail moments. So here's two of them with some simple context.

First, the roleplay was just the three of us. Each of us controlled three demi-gods that were shaping a new world. Backstory isn't important. The purpose was a battle/action roleplay where we would fight one another. Both of them we're itching to fight as soon as possible. So very early on, I described one of my gods wandering in a completely barren and dry desert oasis in scorching heat of daylight to scope out the area. My roommate really wanted to fight me, his three gods had the general powers of Light, Earth and Water. Do I even need to tell you which one sent given the topic at hand?

He sent his water god and challenged me to a fight to the death. Apparently, he missed the whole 'completely dry and barren' part (and the desert part). Which his exasperated screams over the phone, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT A WATERY OASIS?" made it all the more hilarious. It was a miracle that that demi-god made it out alive. A moment I'll never let go. Wasn't even the last lopsided battle in that RP. (Pro-Tip, don't write you expose your only obvious weak point to launch a powerful attack, if your opponent is in easily range of it. Also, don't join a battle RP and expect no death.)

So the second one is also quite early into the story and happens to be his cousin's fault this time, we had a six person party. A simple D&D style quest adventure, everyone had just entered the small town that was about to get attacked by a group of bandits. So the group gathered in the middle of the town where they started causing trouble. So, the cousin's character who was a warlock decided to start the battle by threatening and instilling fear into them. He changed his ordinary human appearance, into something more demonic looking. One bandit cried out that he was a monster. He loudly called back in a unnatural voice. "I'm not a monster, I'm a devil!" He proceeded to laugh manically. Ah, teenagers and their writing. Good times...

The problem with this, is one of the other character's entire backstory is based on demons slaughtering his people. He also was a barbarian and mercenary paid to kill demons, and a stranger whom he hasn't met yet started calling out in the middle of the town. "Mwhahaha, I'm a devil." casting fire spells. So, it lead with a bastard sword impaling that character. His cousin was not pleased with this action. But basically everyone else laughed their asses off. Maybe not the best way to introduce yourself. Edge writing, on top of being embarrassing to read often leads to embarrassing results. Sometimes, a quick and instant death...

I've had my share of cringe inducing roleplays in my time, but most of them have sort of faded from my mind. (Like even from a year ago, I feel I'd probably recall more intricate details about them.) I actually have more memories of my own fiction, which I'm sure if I could somehow get back I'd greatly enjoy laughing at it. There's a lot of stuff I've created that I'd love to have, that's been unfortunately lost along with most things connected with my past.

Most cringe worthy RP moment?

Oh I have so many yet the one that sticks out in my mind the most was a table top RPG known as Nightlight back in the late 90's. We were campaigning one night, it was late of course and there was a heavy cloud of half smoked cigarettes in the air. We had been gaming for probably 12 hours straight. The GM had us in this bad situation and our party was divided. Half of us on one side of a compound, half of us on the other. We had communicators, so we thought it was all good. Little ones in our watches.

GM: What do you do?
Me: Okay, listen we are pinned down under heavy fire, we need back up.
GM: ~looks at the other player~ You don't hear anything.
Me: ~repeats herself~
GM: Still don't hear anything.
Me: ~repeats herself again~
GM: Still nothing.
Me: ~goes through the same process like five more times~
GM: Again, nothing.

I was confused, why wasn't my watch not working. It had a communicator in it. This shit should work!

Me: ~lifts her wrist and speaks into it~ Not my character, me...
GM: ~falls out of the chair laughing~

Apparently I had gotten too into character and forgotten that I didn't actually realize that I wasn't my character, that I didn't have a watch on with a communicator in it. I was totally confused why he and slowly everyone else started laughing. I was getting pissed, kept retrying to talk into my damn wrist. At that point the Gm quickly called it a night and the guys shuffled my ticked sleep deprived ass to bed. It wasn't until I woke up the next morning that I realized what I had done. (Granted to this day, I still don't know why my communicator didn't work lol)
