#10 - Challenge - Echo of the Self

Judge: Lugubrious
Type: Writing challenge
Deadline: Saturday, May 23rd, afternoon

Your task is to take the provided prompt and craft a 3rd-person, non-canon short story involving your Heroes of Beacon character based around it. The minimum length for this challenge is 1200 words. The maximum is 3400 words. Good luck, and have fun!

Prompt: It is three years from now in IC time. Your character is on the final stretch to graduating as an ace hunter or huntress. One year ago, an ordeal referred simply as 'the incident' occurred, throwing the whole school into a tumult from which everything gradually slid back to place...or so it would seem. To be specific, the school was sabotaged from within by graduates from the school itself, a certain team KPT, and made vulnerable to an insurgence of masked lunatics shouting the name of the Order of Grimm. Only the KPT team leader, Kitty Boot, survived. Now, however, something different is afoot. Whether during a mission or daily routine, a strange portal had appeared in front of your team, and through it comes a strange figure with a hint of familiarity. Within short order, your character realizes to his or her shock that this person is none other than a traveler from the future--and their own child, as old as they are, to boot. (Other options include niece/nephew, or adopted child). In the ensuing conversation, most disturbing aside the child's mention of your character's death is his or her mention of a event that destroyed the world, a threat that they've traveled back in time to help prevent. What that threat is, what the time traveler's relation is to the character, what they look and act like, how they're met, and whether or not they have any companions (future children of other Beacon students) is up to you.

TL;DR In your senior year, your future kid comes back in time to warn you of something. Also you died.

Alrighty then! Thank all five of you very much for your contributions. I'll go ahead and give you all a quick critique before I announce the winners.

Forsythe – well done. You fulfilled all the necessary parts of the prompt, adding in a bit from the past and a substantial hint of what's to come in the future. Atlas 'moving against ' the other kingdoms would certainly qualify as an event that destroyed the world as our characters know it. On the flipside, Diamond's child practically kidnapping her was -while interesting in that sort of action-movie way- a perhaps unnecessary twist for the sake of mystique, the nonexistent transition between the place where Diamond was brought and Ozpin's sleeping quarters was a little bit jarring, and this might just be my foolishness, but I never understood the other half of Lily's lineage.

Prince of Seraphs – sincere kudos to you for writing almost a novella, but on an analytical level it won't earn you any special favors. Rather than faulting you for prominence excess on word count, I'll try to focus on the events requested by the prompt. You decided to go the subtle route with the introduction of Demetri, spanning over a lot of IC-time, which was a creative way to do it that nevertheless contrasted with the prompt's specification. Ideally, the child's express intent was to warn their parent, and Demetri behaved almost as a double agent, and only did it as a last resort, and after much time. Your portrayal of Abel as a hero was endearing, hinting that while still defeatist he had developed to the level of determined defeatist, and I liked it but can naturally grant you no favors on that account due to bias. Also, I got the Doctor Who reference. Overall, I'd have to say while you did a splendid and thorough job writing, you perhaps missed the mark on exactly what I asked.

Multi_Media_Man – an impressive response to my prompt. You addressed the desired parts by the book, but also took the time to craft consequences of the Incident and carry a little into the future to act upon the information given by the time-traveler and change fate. The changing-semblance bit I found pretty intriguing, which made me wonder more about exactly how the time travel occurred, which you excused yourself from detailing with 'the how isn't important right now'. Still, your infrequent irregularities aren't enough to tarnish the quality of the whole.

Guess Who – I must admit that I enjoy reading your writing every time. Your sense of humor keeps getting to me, and though the union in question that led to Robert's children (nice idea to use twins, by the way) was fairly predictable, the manner in which it occurred aroused some points from me. I also enjoyed the interaction with the children, displaying a certain degree of personality that while perhaps not suiting the dire circumstances in which they came, nevertheless gave insight into their character. Unfortunately, those circumstances are the lowest point of your entry. The entire deal with the Reaper, which counts as a self-insert however good it might be, and how Robert's tiny bracers are the only thing that can kill a single monster responsible for the annihilation of civilization...it all just seemed a bit contrived.

HereComesTheSnow – you did pretty well for a first entry! Your humor, character interaction, and general style of writing were energetic and entertaining. That said, their blend made it a bit confusing. I regret to say that you lost a few points by misunderstanding some parts of the prompt; the Incident, where the Order of the Grimm broke into the school and wrecked havoc, already happened—a year ago to be precise. With that in mind, there's effectively no world-threatening event that the girl came back in time to warn of. I was going to fault you for never naming the girl, but since you said 'nameless niece' in a certain part, I decided that it was intentional and let it go. I know I might seem kinda mean to be getting onto you like this, so I hope you don't feel badly, and use this as a learning experience for next time.

The winner...man, it was hard toss-up this round. Took me the better part of this morning to finally decide. In first place is Multi_Media_Man, who earns 2 credits, and right behind by the slimmest of margins of Forsythe with 1 credit. If there could have been a tie for second place, there would have been.

Here's your next assignment.

#11 - Contest – And Yet a Hero

Judge: Lugubrious
Type: Character creation
Deadline: May 27th, evening

Your task is to create a character using the provided sheet that satisfies the following information. Categories that do not appear on the character sheet are open to interpretation. Categories that do appear on the character sheet must be followed, but can and should be further expounded upon if able.

Motif: Mantra
Role: Leader
Age: 21
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Additional info: The idea of Mantra is this: the character effectively represents one of the following traits of human behavior: gluttony, indulgence, perfectionism, terror, tenacity, servility, despair, rage, indolence, or cupidity. This facet of human behavior is evident not only in their personality but also in their appearance, specialty, and equipment. The mantras described are not all positive, some decisively negative in fact, but the character is still at least mostly heroic, as evidenced by his or her status as the leader of Beacon's senior ace team.

Keep in mind, the character must represent his or her mantra, but the way that occurs can be variable. A lustful character based on 'cupidity' might be the kind you'd typically expect, one who's willing to pursue anything with a pulse, or be someone with a boundless, intimate desire for a single individual.

Forsythe wins and gets 2 credits
Eklipse runner-ups and gets 1 credit
Both were good concepts but only Forsythe's entry followed the rules of 'human' and 'female'.
This marks the first time that a contest or challenge has had the same amount of entrants as titles.
Hopefully more people will try next time.
Multi_Media_Man will be administering the next challenge.

#12 - Challenge - Poetry!

Judge: MULTI_MEDIA_MAN
Type: Writing challenge
Deadline: Tuesday, June 2nd, 11:59 PM EST.

Alright, folks! Create a poem for your Heroes of Beacon character! The type of poem I'd like you to create is rather specific, though: it must be a first-person poem that fits an overarching theme. The theme needn't be blatantly obvious, but it should be discernable. You also don't have to reveal anything about your character's backstory yet, but I've always found these contests a good way to explore characters outside of the boundaries of the main RP. I'll likely be cooking something up for Oswald and posting it (though obviously I won't actually be participating)

PS: as you may have noticed from my entry, rhyming is not necessary.

Well, folks, thank you for your entries! First, I'll announce the winners.

First, winner of two credits, is our illustrious GM, Lugubrious! You absolutely hit the nail on the head with your poem, though the repetition got to be slightly unpleasant by the end. However, that didn't take away from the feeling I got while reading it.

Second, winner of a single credit, is Prince of Seraphs! Where the others met expectations and created enjoyable poems, your theme of conflict as to one's world view, and its execution pushed you above your competitors.

Sorry for the rather short announcement. I'm not much for long-winded speeches or anything like that. A man of few words, all in all.

#13 - Challenge - 2D!

Judge: Forsythe
Type: Art challenge
Deadline: 21/06/2015 0:00 GMT

Your task is to draw a short comic involving HoB characters. The ranking criteria will be the overall impression, not necessarily the art style. Stickmen with recognizable accents are perfectly good to deliver most things like situational comedy and others. Here is an example of something that would qualify.

Prompt: Impress me.

#14 - Survey - Polling Time!

This one will be a bit different than normal. Rather than a creation contest or a writing challenge, it is a simple survey. If you were present in Chapter One, you may draw upon those experiences as well. If you No credit will be earned for an incomplete entry. All participants will receive 1 credit for completing this survey.

1. How have I been doing so far in this RP's management? Is there something you'd like to see more of, less of, revisit, revise?

2. What character have you enjoyed reading the most, and why?

3. What character, based upon the sheet and his or her IC behavior, would best fit into the actual RWBY show if given the chance?

4. What single event would you most look forward to happening in the course of this RP? Things such as a tournament arc, a school dance, etc?

5. If all teams were to have a massive, Hunger Games-esque fight, which would come out on top, and why?

6. What do you think of this system of contests and challenges? Anything you would change?

7. What sort of circumstance would aid you in revealing your character's backstory in a warranted, thought-out fashion?

8. Do you have a favorite ship? If so, who?

9. Finally, what do you picture your character doing or being in twenty years, provided that he or she graduates Beacon?

#15 - Contest - Knights of the Round

Judge: Prince of Seraphs
Type: Writing Challenge
Deadline: June 29th Evening

Your task is to take the provided prompt and craft a 3rd-person, non-canon short story involving your Heroes of Beacon character based around it. The minimum length for this challenge is 1200 words.

Prompt: Worlds come in all shapes and sizes. Take this one for example, I want you to reimagine the world of Remnant and our Beacon in an Arthurian setting. Bear in mind the kinds of technology present in medieval times and expectations of different social classes. The is still of course the world of Remnant so the basics, hunters, dust, faunus, Grimm, Beacon all remain the same in spirit though perhaps not in execution.

Now your prompt: The ruler of the Kingdom of Vale requires valiant fresh warriors to join him on a crusade. In order that he might find the most skilled fighters he is holding a tournament for the squires of the Beacon Knights Academy. Those that win will be elevated to his personal guard as well as winning glory among there peers.

Try to outline the differences as best you can. See what has to change and what you can keep the same, maybe settings alter slightly but team dynamics stay the same. And try to have fun with this.

Alright and the polls are in. I must confess I wished a few more people had participated but we work with what we've got.

@Lugubrious Loved your entree. Though the prompt only actually called for you to convert Remnant into a medieval setting you went beyond that by merging it with Arthurian Legend. A very amusing piece to be sure. Those nods to Monty Pyton's Holy Grail did not go unappreciated. Though I'm curious as to why you didn't make use of Tristan, Iseult, or Percival I still found it to be a very enjoyable read which I wouldn't have minded going on for a bit longer then it did. Props to you for including Sir Beowulf's departure as an IC event :).

@KabenSaal While I'm grateful that you chose to participate given the lack of interest in this contest I feel that you didn't put a particular amount of effort into your entree. Firstly, the idea was for you to reimagine Remnant as a medieval setting while I will say there were components of that in your story all of them were either copied from Lugubrious' entree or from Monty Python leading me to think that you didn't put any of your own creativity into the project. The other requirement the prompt included was that the King of Vale was holding a tournament to decide who would become his personal guard and join him on a crusade. There were absolutely no traces of this event in your entree. It wouldn't have been difficult to alter it so that the battle with the Black Beast of Argh was a challenge to the tournament which sort of leads me to believe you didn't read the prompt at all. Lastly both your fight with the Black Knight and your Black Beast of Argh were almost directly copied word for word from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. While instead of having the animator die you made it allergic to herring was amusing I would suggest you try to spice things up a bit in future if you are trying to do a parody.

@Crimmy You're was truly an interesting read. The only bad thing I can really say about it would be that I do not believe the word "fuck" was used in common practice in the middle ages. Past that you're participation in the tournament, your fight with Napoli and your ending were all very well done. I especially liked your mentions of God and the Lord during your battle as he would have been considered a source of strength for knights during the medieval times and your specific and hostile mention that Napoli was a bastard as that would have been a big deal and a source of disgrace for the family. Over all well done.

Now to announce the winner. With so few participants this is likely very predictable but in first place for Two Credits with his Arthurian retelling of Remnant is... Lugubrious. And second place for One Credit with an entree filled with bloodlust and cheese lovers is... Crimmy. Collect your prizes on Conference Doc.

I would post another contest but mine don't seem to be extremely popular with the masses. I will attempt to think of something that garners more interest for next time. Lugubrious I believe the next one is in your court unless someone else had an idea.

#16 – World Creation - Create an Organization!

Judge – Lugu

Type – Writing Challenge

In this contest…no this is not a contest but an Opportunity! Your objective is simple, to create an organization with the following template in third person, with a minimum length of 1,500 words. The more you add the better. The world of RWBY is bare-bones so this is everyone’s opportunity to create an organization to spice up the world of RWBY. You can create any kind of organization with any affiliation. The only thing limiting you is your creativity and how far you want to go on this. (Example: Part of the Atlesian Military, unaffiliated business company, etc.) Each participant with a full completed sheet will earn two credits. The first prize winner will get 4 credits. 2nd place gets three and so on... Even if you do not win, your organization can be a part of the HOB universe depending on Lugu.

Deadline: July 31, midnight.

Have Fun!

It is clear that all of you put a great amount of effort into your submissions. Thank you six for participating. As per the rules, all of you receive rewards, but some a little more than others...

Guess Who and Pyrodash888 did well, but did not quite stand up to the other submissions in various territories, at least in my eyes, so both receive 2 credits.
Shadowkiller912 obviously put a whole lot of love into the project, but even with the extended deadline that he insisted upon, he did not ultimately finish, and I found a military order, though well thought-out, among the less interesting of the entries. 3 credits are yours.
HereComesTheSnow struck a chord with me with the Summit of Fists, a martials arts extravaganza uniting all forms of discipline and technique into a single colossal school of excellence. However much I like it, however, there is less substance to it than the remaining two entries. 4 credits to you.

And for the first time, I could not decide on a winner among the remaining two. Both incorporated lots of thought, interesting ideas, originality, and layers of development. In accordance with the rules, then, Sho Minuzaki and Crimmy both receive 5 credits.

Good work, all of you. The next contest will be designed by me. Get ready to Stand up and show your might.

#17 - This must be the work of an enemy Stand!

Judge: Lugubrious
Type: Crossover Combination
Deadline: Wednesday the 19th

They are semi-physical manifestations of your psychic power and aura, and because they appear next to you as guardians, they are called: Stands. Your task in to take your character, strip them of their aura and semblance, and combine both into a separate being that the character might summon to do battle. You may also develop the semblance to its fullest extent, since Stands are notoriously overpowered. Of course, all stands need their own unique appearance and name. Stand names are, as always, band names. Theme music, whether from that band or not, is also welcome. There are numerous other tidbits, such as stats. Stands most often appear as metallic humanoids, but can be creatures, vehicles, and even places. Use this example as a template:

Stand User: Abel Fulgurate
Stand Name: Quiet Riot
Stand Appearance: Humanoid from the waist up with a serpentine trunk. Its dark blue metal body is angular and sharp-edged in man places, with gleaming white stripes and highlights, and three light blue eyes positioned in a line. Its mouth is affixed in a permanent snarling grimace with fangs. On its neck and back are a mane of lightning-bolt shaped metal prongs, which constantly dance with electricity.
Stand Power: Surge - Quiet Riot can charge objects with electricity via touch. Once they are charged, Quiet Riot has telekinetic control over them. He can create static charges powerful enough to stick nearly any objects together, cancel out their gravity, or simply throw them around or electrocute them. Quiet Riot can also convert itself into electricity to attack or hide in electronics.
Destructive Power: C
Speed: B
Range: C
Durability: A
Precision: B
Development Potential: D

Alright, as it stands, this work is done. Let's see who came out on top...

Honorable mention to Crimmy's Dangerous with an extremely unique appearance. Seriously, that's something you'd find in either a hallucination or a nightmare. Props to any imagination that could come up with that. The ability to control the flow of life energy, whether to take it or give it, I found engaging and well-developed, but not quite as upper-echelon as those who came above you. Good work.

In second place with a gain of one credit is Pyrodash888's Blind Guardian. A dragon stand struck me as interesting, but the idea of a commander, one who gives rise to legions of the dead and can even make them whole once more, even for a limited time, came off as particularly unique. It reminds me of an Egyptian pharaoh, or something perhaps even older, a being with ancient and sovereign power. Nice job.

First place goes to Harinezumikouken's Nano, as well as the two credits. I expected something near-mythological to come from Shiro's semblance if you chose to participate, and you did not disappoint. With a stand like this, I could see Shiro's Nano as a villain nearly on par Dio in terms of mental screwing, if not more. It begs the question of how reality is a product of perception by affecting both. Not only that, but it also has support functions. To top it all off, Nano's motif impressed me.

Lastly, a word to you all. This was a tough judging. Don't take not winning as evidence that you did poorly; all of your concepts were intriguing in their own right, but in the end I had to pick favorites.

That's all for now. Please, someone else do the next contest. Until then...
