But in a capital-S kinda way.

I invented necromancy and the windmill. I beat the sun in a poker match during the summer of 1273 and God hasn't felt the same since.

"I'm suggesting that we go out to the woods somewhere and go train with our abilities... because honestly, we could have handled the Outsider better and it was only a stroke of luck we survived that encounter and we somehow got over on Blake."

"... Somehow?" Madison asked with a raised eyebrow as that comment was the only thing keeping her from drinking some more.

"Point is, I'm not comfortable with getting by on chance alone, we need to get better at this... and to be entirely fair the Coven was assembled to explore magic, correct? So far all we've done is shakedown vampires, argue, and try stupid get rich quick schemes. And I told myself as the leader of the Coven I'd try to get something actually productive done for once."

Training...

Kara has done plenty of that, the past year, she was learning about her abstraction. She found ways to turn her skin into solid wood hard enough that she could break large rocks, or make walls with her power. The thing about it was that anything she made seemed to disappear overtime, like the wood was dying. She got pretty good at it, but she wasn’t able to just snap her fingers and make wooden claws, she could do it, sure, but it would take a few seconds. It was like her skin actually evaporated to reveal bark, or something else. Kara actually got to a point where she could make an actual weapon out of wood. Nothing like a sword, but rather a spear or a walking stick. The wood could be snapped if it got shaped the right way, and warped into a walking stick or sharpened at the tip for stabbing something. Oddly enough, once the wood was disconnected from her body, she could shape it. Yet when she made wood erupt from the ground, that didn’t matter. It was strange, to be sure, but Kara wasn’t too worried about that. She still thought it would be important to say something though.

”That could be a good idea. I’ve been..”training” with my stuff for around a year now, but I don’t really understand the supernatural things you guys do. Maybe we could learn from each other?” she was mainly talking to Claudette, since she didn’t exactly know the rest of the people, or Claudette actually, but she seemed to be the closest thing to a leader in this group.

Kara shifted in her spot on the floor in front of the others. ”I just got here, and from what I’ve heard I can’t imagine what you people have gone through, but if you’ll allow me to work towards being one of you, I’ll do what I can to help.” Kara was now talking to the others in the coven, everyone as a whole. She extended her hand outwards and formed wood around her fingertips, in a similar fashion to what she did in the park, for everyone to see. Like an introduction. ”Claudette told me about your troubles, just know, I’m not the FBI. The wood around her hands remained in place for everyone to obverse. Kara’s tone was mellow and smooth, but sincere. She wasn’t here to harm anyone, she was here for peace, if anything.

Little did Kimiko realize, that wasn’t Mizo covered in water.

After attempting to slam one of them in the face and getting drenched, she silently stood upwards and slowly, quite dramatically, turned to face Kimiko. Right about now was when Mizo would say something like “It’s about to get really interesting.” Or “Buy me dinner first.” She would if she had a voice, which she didn’t. Knowing full well that Kimiko was now out of range of the trap, and ready to square off with Mizo for real this time. Hoseki just backed away, and tapped the ground with his foot, to let the Mizo underground know that things were shifting a little.

”This’ll be fun. Hoseki said, dripping with sarcasm. Seeing the samurai bitch pull out one of those katanas and pointing it at Kizo? Who the fuck knew what was gonna happen? Especially when that was just a clone. Normally, the Wind Style wouldn’t do much against Earth Style, but considering the fact that the Mizo which was now cracking its knuckles was made of mud and chakra, it was hard to say if any kind of Jutsu would work on Kiniko. And that’s assuming a mud clone could even preform Jutsu. Hoeski made a mental note of the flag being tied around her neck, maybe he could singe it a little...made it fall off easier. In any case, It wasn’t clear whether or not Mizo’s trap would work at this rate, if it did, great. If not, well, she could always blast out of the ground with all the energy she conserved through the battle and really give Kimiko a run for her money. Thankfully, Hoseki’s bakt didn’t entirely give her position away, maybe Kimiko thought he was trying a new Jutsu himself, or maybe she really thought they were in kahoots. It didn’t matter now.

Mizo’s clone was now staring down Kimiko, fists clenched behind her gauntlets. Looking the samurai bitch dead in the eyes, not a trace of fear or energy on her face. Was Kimiko expecting a reaction out of her rival? Hopefully not.

The ensuing battle looked like it was taking hold of the game, fun. Kana was lucky, he didn’t have to stick around to see the absolute cat fight.

The man gave Micah a long, drawn out look before answering his question.

”Turn around and leave. There’s nothing in that forest for anyone. You’re wasting your time here. Stay out of the forest.” He was addressing the entire party as a whole. Tolan’s voice didn’t change, but it was clear that this guy wasn’t playing around. ”I don’t know what you’ve heard. I don’t know what you’ve been told. I don’t care. There is nothing in that forest for anyone. No one goes in there for a reason.” It was roughly 11pm by now. The moon was dragging itself across the sky outside, and Helsend was dead silent with the exception of Toland and the adventures. Every street lamp outside had already gone dark. The atmosphere around Tolan himself was perfect for the night. Yellowgrass had a single window beside the door a little walk away from the party’s table, but it was pitch black outside. Not a sound could be heard outside, and the full moon was the only source of light to shine on Helsend. Everyone else in town is asleep. It’s like a whole other world right now.

Tolan’s demeanor looked just as far away as the look he gave Micah

”You’ve come here for nothing. Go home.”

The masked man’s face didn’t really bug the sleepy bartender, what actually bothered him was the questions he received at the expense of seeing the weird mark on his arm. How does someone else know about that? Then again, he did look like a lunatic to Tolan. ”I’m gonna pretend you didn’t ask any of that, and tell you to mind your business, traveller.” He made sure Micah wasn’t getting too close. It was too damn late at night for this. ”No. I don’t know magic. I’m a bartender, not a wizard. He said plainly. Granted, the mark on his wrist seemed to betray that information, as did his lack of shock at the appearance of a goat mask, an elf, six feet tall muscle people, and Kaze’s sword. The man was putting away a few more glasses and mugs before he deftly swung a chair around a table way from the adventures and faced them. Especially Micah.

”What’s your business here in town?

Through the ride to a “beach house” Kara was silent. She was thinking about who the nine or ten others were, and the pet alligator? That was weird, but it sounded cute, so she went along with it. Of course, when she got there the whole thing was hell of a lot more nicer than she was anticipating for a bunch of magic lesbians who were up to who knows what. Stepping out of the car and meandering across the sand, it was a pretty nice house. How the hell did a bunch of magical lesbians who were up to who knows what get a hold of some piece of land like that? Oh well, it wasn’t as important as the off brand Mexican stand off she spongebobbed her way into by mistake. It looked like everyone in the coven based on Claudette’s words was right here.

”Uh. Hi.”

”I can handle fighting.” Kara said bluntly, after hearing the other two talk. Fighting, and violence as a whole, was the very reason she was in this ring of events in first place. It’s not something she wasn’t used to handling, except now she could stab somebody with a wooden spike if she wanted. ”Like I said, I’m used to this stuff. Not supernatural stuff, but fighting. I grew up with that. It’s how I got here.” Her hands shifted around in her pockets, Kara’s tone was blunt, there wasn’t much stopping her from staying. ”I live alone. Nobody would notice if I’m with you guys. It’s quiet where I live, nothing ever goes on on that side of town, so it doesn’t seem like anything serious would follow me down there, nothing...supernatural at least.” She had been floating around under the radar for a while now, working some job downtown where she just moved stuff around. Corner store where people get beer and stuff on Saturdays.

”How many more of you are there?” She asked.

Iris Aderast

Iris remained silent until sister Lark came out. A girl she hadn’t heard much from in a while, she was well known but not very important, at least not as far as she knew. She got up and sauntered over to the pile of robes and threw a pair over her clothes, it was uncomfortable over her denim coat, but that’s what you get for trying to look nice. She fastened a few of the buttons to make herself look presentable, before taking off her charms. One was a necklace to help channel magic into an object, and the other didn’t come off until she sat Corvus down on her Golem Book. ”Corvus. Stay here.” She said to the golem, she had to wait until he knew what to do before she took her arm band off, otherwise she wouldn’t be able to talk to him. She slid the dainty looking tanglement of flowers and vines off her wrist and laid it next to Corvus, who was resting on the book that he owed his existence to. Her phone was next to him, as was her earbuds. When Sister Lark lit the lantern, Iris fell in line towards the back, walking in silence. Finally, she’s become a witch.

Iris has been running around the fields for years, but she never would have guessed that any witch would cast an illusion in the brush she walked by an unimaginable number of times, the wellspring was impossibly beautiful...Deftly dropping to her pillow and hearing Deborah tell them what to do, it made sense. The herbs in the bottles made. Iris recognized at least two or three of them thanks to her potions. Dragons Blood and Elicara’s Leaves. How did they get something like that to mix? She thought it was strange, the oils in Dragons Blood were acidic, so they had to be stored in water, but here it was in open air. Clearly someone was better with potions than Iris. Bleeding into it and adding water, Iris wasn’t terribly surprised by its taste, Elicara’s Leaves always tasted like a day old cigar after all. Elicara Tea would be great right now.

Isolde Morden

”I am honored to be here, Sister.” She told Lark with a smile, it really was an honor to be given the title of a true witch, and when Lark passed out the clothes, Isolde gracefully donned the robes with little regard for the flowing nature of them, she was used to clothes like this, clothes that flowed like water. She walked over into the soft grass and thrusted her staff into the dirt, slinging her backpack over it, it was waterproof, so everything inside would be fine, and she’s come back for it soon. She took a spot among the congregation up front, taking in the beauty of the land. She had never seen such a terrain, living in rocky mountaintops covered in clouds. The trick of the eye to hide the entrance was quite clever, and the whole time Isolde couldn’t tell the herbs by name, since she knew nothing of alchemy, but she trusted they would be safe. The air felt unnatural, it was almost as if you could breathe and make a flower sprout. Rolling up her sleeves, she made it a point to not cut her tattoo, and bled from her right arm. The water mixed with her blood and the herbs, creating an ethereal purple liquid that tasted like tar, it was the kind of thing a non-witch would have to hold their nose to drink, but Isolde managed, until she didn’t...

Iris’ head began to swirl like a pound of brinks, she didn’t make a sound, but she blacked out into a hallucination unlike anything else, she had been in similar situations as a result of miscalculations from making potions, but this was unbelievable, she was alone in the wellspring, nauseated and at her feet, the water of the lake was gone. Bone dry. The only sign of life was Iris. ”H...D-dako-“ Her speech was slurred as she tried to call for her friends. Nothing. But the ground reacted, vines raised out all around her, in clumps of 3 to 7. The pale dirt cracked and gave away as trees twisted and contorted into humanoid shapes, fingers, eyes, arms. They outnumbered her greatly, almost like everyone being initiated brought a friend, but Iris couldn’t move. She’d fall over. Eventually, the shapes began to manifest bodies, the kind Iris recognized. How? She wrote the book on them.

Golems. All around her. They all started at her, there were at least 20 in the wellspring’s absence and Iris was confused. None of them had a heart. A heart was meant to be glowing blue in their chests, none of them had one, not that she could tell entirely, but they were fully alive! ”H-how...” It didn’t matter. This isn’t. Real. You’re not here. You know a real golem. Wake up. They were reaching for her, oaken hands outstretched like they wanted her. She couldn’t move.

Meanwhile, Isolde’s head was in the clouds. Literally.

She was floating in the skies, her body was numb and she couldn’t move in the thunderhead’s glory. All around her in the vast cloud were flashes. Blinding to anyone any closer than Isolde. Booming noises like a god clapping their hands sounding off at any time. It was lightning. She was in a lightning storm. Feeling slowly crept back into her weightless body, as she moved in place. She could see the bolts striking downwards, into the nothing mess. In reality, Isolde lay unconscious on her knees with her head fallen backwards. Small bursts of lightning arcing off her bleeding arm, but in her mind, she floated peacefully in a grand thunderstorm. To be so close to the cornerstone of her magic. To be in the eye of the storm...it was beautiful. The chaos surrounded her, she was the eye of the storm. She was at peace. Isolde, in her torporific stupor, drunkenly hummed an old song of her people in the middle of the raging clouds that swirled her.

On...the mountain’s tree
For all the rain, that...you...can see
I am on the...the mountain’s clo-

The thundering grew louder and the lightning grew closer, until Isolde could almost reach out and grab the lightning...of course, that was until she was struck. A flash lasting as long as the blink of an eye shot Isolde cleanly away with a light gasp, she took in here surroundings as another girl a little way’s away, Iris, shot awake more violently, heavy breathing and a racing heart as she fell forward on her palms, almost into the water she was staring into ”...It...it’s okay...they can’t do that...they need a heart... She reassured herself, only a stone’s throw away from Sister Deborah, who likely heard her words, did they mean anything to her? Did she have any idea what heart Iris referred to? Possibly, but Iris was too busy trying to get a hold of herself, admittedly, a golem without the restrictions of a heart would be quite worrying to Iris, mainly because she wouldn’t know how to stop such a thing, but also because golems require power. What kind of golem can get power without a heart?
