If you are a fan of Warhammer 40,000 or Age of Sigmar, let me know. Maybe we can put together an RP. I play Ironjawz & Kruleboyz in AOS and Salamanders & Drukhari in 40K.

Bio
I am a veteran of the United States Army and the US Army National Guard. I spent three years on Active Duty serving in the 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) at Ft. Carson, CO, and the 3rd Armor Division at Kirch Göns, West Germany. I spent 18 years in the Army National Guard with the 26th Infantry Division "Yankee" and 29th Infantry Division (Light), "The Blue and the Gray". I was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina with the 29th ID (L) in 2001 - 2002. I have also been reading military history articles and books since I was 10 years old. I do prefer Military Role Plays over all other genres, primarily because I have a vast knowledge of the subject including personal experiences. At the very least, my characters are always veterans.
I have been writing for pleasure for at least 35+ years but only got into forum-based Role Playing about eighteen years ago. I do enjoy Nation Role Plays and get into minute detail when designing my military. The only reason I enjoy excruciating detail in my militaries is because for me, it is fun. My education and experience on this subject afford me the insight to see the depth of the structure. It is not just a General and a large pile of soldiers. If someone wants assistance in designing an army, navy, or air force, please send me a PM. I will help. Please specify what level (echelon) or depth you would like me to go. When I say echelon, I mean Army, Corps, Division, Brigade/Regiment, Battalion/Squadron, Company/Troop/Battery, Platoon, and Squad/Section.
When I was a student in High School, I used to play Dungeons & Dragons. Recently, I have been DMing a 5e campaign of my creation for my son and his friends. 5e is so much less cumbersome than earlier editions of D&D. I do have an interest in Tolkien-esque fantasy-styled Role Plays as well. Time travel has always been a fun genre for me, but to do it well, one must have a firm grasp of historical facts.
There are only a few fanfictions I will participate in; Star Wars and Star Trek are two of them. I want to do an exclusively Klingon RP one of these days. I also avoid Canon characters.
I have real-world martial arts experience. I would love to write an RP about hand-to-hand combat, no fantasy magic chit, just hands elbows, knees, and feet. Maybe the occasional head butt thrown in to mix things up. I trained in Krav Maga for six and a half years. I earned a first-degree black belt in Krav Maga on 3 June 2017.
Krav Maga is an Israeli martial art form that employs practical self-defense techniques drawing forms & techniques from Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Taekwando. It is very brutal, demanding, and aggressive. During the seven years I trained, I have bruised two ribs, sustained several muscle pulls, and various lacerations and bruises over my body. I have received a sprained ankle and a fractured wrist. Before the first black belt test, I received a bone bruise to my right shin; where my roundhouse kicks impact. Yet, I am stupid enough to continue training. [Regardless of the physical pain, it is more fun than any other physical activity I have engaged in. Fortunately, the bone bruise healed up prior to the third and final test. EDIT: I did leave the sport over five years ago. :(]
Over two years ago I completed my first novel, a science fiction set in the 24th century. It focuses on a Private Military Corporation solely employed by the earth government. I started a second book in November 2022 and hope to work on that this summer when I have more time.
Send me a PM for a Role Play or if you would like to see what sort of an army I could build for you.

What Brings You To Role Player Guild: There is a large community of writers here. I enjoy the hobby even though I rarely get time to participate. Currently, I try to limit my stories to one at a time. Unfortunately, I rarely find one I enjoy and others are willing to write in. When I do, they die way too early. Life Before You Came To Role Player Guild: It was very different. I don’t know how to explain it in just a few words or sentences. Life Since You Came To Role Player Guild: This is just a side hobby. I have many irons in the fire and this is just one of them. It has taken a back seat to my real life activities.

Quotes or Sayings: “Those who fail to learn the lessons of the past are doomed to repeat them.” – Winston Churchill paraphrasing George Santayana. “If you’re going to fight, fight like the third monkey on the ramp to Noah’s ark and brother…It’s starting to rain.” Theme Song: Warrior’s Call Advice To The World: Forgive the actions of those who came before us. Behaviors we consider heinous crimes today were generally accepted practices many years ago. Anything Else:
@Gunther Would there be any African-Americans in this unit?
When it comes to Role Play, I'm all for breaking down those barriers. I already said female characters were allowed even though they were not permitted in combat arms during WWII. The same could be said about African Americans and segregation in the 1940s. Racism was overt then; blatantly easy to see. Expressing racism in today's integrated army will result in an Article 15, non-judicial punishment.
@Gunther It would probably be useful to include a list of what would be censored in letters from servicemen (e.g troop movements, criticism of superiors, etc.). It would also be cool if, in our letters, we deleted certain parts, like a real censored letter would.
CENSORSHIP ITEMS: 1. Any details about upcoming operations 2. Times or dates regarding troop movements 3. Locations or destinations of where units are going 4. Current locations of units. 5. I wouldn't say criticisms of superiors per se, but the topic of what they are being criticized for. It could point to a weakness in the officer or the unit. Saying, "I criticized the old man about how he handled a situation recently and now I am in hot water with him" is ok. Saying, "I criticized the old man because he allowed the men to all go to sleep without posting guards" would not be OK.
A Platoon Leader is the Officer in charge of a single Platoon, normally they get orders from Company Command and disseminate it to their Squad leaders who disseminate it to the men on the assault.
Company Operations Sergeant is the NCO in charge of the Company level stuff, so lots of Paperwork and likely advising the Company Commander on tactics and strategy in combat situations.
One is an Officer in charge of less people, one is an NCO "in charge" of more people.
FrostedCaramel is correct about the PL being an officer. 2nd Lieutenants and 1st Lieutenants occupy this slot in a platoon. I am aware the US Army used Operations Sergeants during World War II and later. They are not used today, but the USMC do use them today. The ranks during WWII were very different than they are today and were only used from 1942 to 1948. The authorized rank for an Operations NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) is Technical Sergeant (3 stripes and 2 rockers), but could be occupied by a Technician 3rd Grade (3 stripes, one rocker and a "T" in the middle). The Technician ranks were only used during WWII. After the Air Force split off in 1948, the Army dissolved them, then later included the Specialist ranks which were used during Vietnam and then eliminated again in 1983.
I know that can be confusing. I've been studying milhist for over 42 years.
The benefit of starting with the lower rank, is your character can be promoted during the RP. That is why I chose a 1st Lieutenant for the Company Commander.
NOTE: there are no infantry fire teams used during WWII. That structure was used sometime after the Korean War era. I know they were used during Vietnam War and later.
I started the day before the unit ships out to France. Post whatever you like, then introduce your character in the Character tab. You don't need to go into a whole lot of detail, just a few paragraphs on his/her history is fine.
10 July 1944 Tomorrow we head for Normandy. I am filled with excitement about what lies ahead. I know it will be challenging, but I believe myself, my officers and soldiers of A Company 37th Tank battalion are up to the challenges. Honestly, am very eager to get into the fight.
We prepared our equipment for transport. The seventeen tanks, six halftracks, two deuce and a halves and two jeeps are all lashed aboard the transport ship and we are all currently assigned to the ship in Portsmouth, England. The air is electric with anticipation. Every man is thinking about how they will perform under fire. They must wonder, if they will survive this encounter with the enemy. I know I do. I hope I survive as I wish to see my wife and children when this war is over. It will end someday, I am sure of this.
The Colonel hosted a get together for all the officers and senior NCOs in the battalion at the local pub. He rented a room in the back and we drank each other under the table. It was a lot of fun and a good way to vent any excessive anxiety we may have felt. The men were permitted to go into town and do whatever they wanted as well. That usually translates into drinking large volumes of alcohol and making asses out of themselves in front of the local women.
Lieutenant Pemberton from C Company go so drunk he pulled out his pecker and urinated in the corner of the room. Around 2100 hours, a group of six women with loose morals entered the room to entertain us. We were told not to touch them and I was fine with that. I kept thinking about my Jean back home. The whole thing made me somewhat uncomfortable, but I was still curious just the same. There was this red-haired woman with some of the largest breasts I have ever seen in my life. They were nearly the size of basketballs. I am not kidding. They were unbelievable.
It was a very humorous and pleasurable event. I can say with a hundred percent certainty, no one died. I guess this was our last hoorah before the big game. Not sure what tomorrow holds, but we can say we had the time of our lives tonight. I’m beat, time to go to bed.
Jean Tyler 27 Cranberry Dr. Watertown, NY 13601
1LT Arthur Tyler A Co. 37th Tank Battalion APO NY 09012
10 July 1944
My Dearest Jean, I truly miss you, sweetheart. It has been a very long time since last we spoke. I do hope this war ends soon so that we can pick up where we left off. Is Robert walking yet? I would assume so, he is 15 months old now.
They are sending us into France soon. I can’t tell you when, just that we will participate in this business I was hired to perform. I know you are not excited about it. Honestly, I am not either, but I am prepared to do my job. I have an excitement about what is to come I cannot explain. I will do whatever it takes to come home to you, my love.
Jacob broke a wrist the other day. I know you remember Jacob, one of the Lieutenants in the battalion. We graduated from Boston College together. He went on a date with your friend, Martha. He is still coming with the unit over to France. I’m not sure exactly what the doctors have told him he can and cannot do. I intend for him to have light duty until his cast is removed.
Please tell me what is going on back home. How are the kids doing? How are mom and dad? What about the Yankees? Are they having a good year? I don’t get to see all the baseball news here in England. I’ll have to rely on your reports to let me know.
Captain Arthur Tyler is 25 years old and hails from Albany, NY. He graduated from Boston College with a degree in Engineering and received a commission in the US Army as a Second Lieutenant, Cavalry. His branch assignment was quickly changed to armor before he attended his Officer Basic Course.
Lieutenant Tyler was initially assigned as a 2LT Platoon Leader in D Company, 37th Tank Battalion then stationed at Camp Pine, New York in 1942. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in the summer of 1943. The unit embarked to England from Boston Harbor in Late 1943 and began training in England in January, 1944. By February, the battalion was issued the M18 Hellcat Tank Destroyers in order to establish Assault Gun platoons in every line company.
Arthur met his wife while a student at Boston College. Jean Dumas is originally from Attleboro, Massachusetts. Before they graduated from BC, the couple was married and expecting their first child. Jean followed Art to Ft. Knox, KY for the Armor Basic Course. Art moved is family to Watertown, NY when he was assigned to the 37th. They have a permanent residence there. Arthur and Jean have two sons; Louis, 3 and Robert, 15 months.
During the D-Day invasion, the 4th Armor Division remained in England. Many of the soldiers were eager to go and hated waiting. Captain Ronald Dixon, A Company Commander got drunk one night in mid-June and died in a motor vehicle accident. 1LT Tyer was then given command of A Company effective 21 June 1944.
Arthur Tyler was promoted to Captain on 16 July with an effective date of 1 July 1944.
If you want to write up a character sheet, please do, but I am not requiring anyone to wrote up a CS prior to your first IC post. Please post a character in the characters tab to include Rank, Name and duty position before posting in the In-Character thread. As you write details about the character, add them to the character sheet. If you would like to write background information about your character, by all means do so. I will write some.
1. This is a realistic RP, so obviously there are no werewolves, demons or vampires in the company. 2. 90% of all soldiers in 1942 were draftees. 10% were either volunteers or members of the US Army before war was declared in 1941. Draftees can be any age between 17 and 32. A very small percentage of soldiers were successful at pretending to be older and enlisted at age 15. We’ve all heard the stories of people who have done that, but they are extremely rare. 3. The unit we are discussing was formed in April 1942 and performed their basic training at Camp Pine, New York. Today, this post is known as Fort Drum, near Watertown, NY. Your character may have an attachment in Watertown, NY. 4. In 1943, the unit moved to Camp Myles Standish, near Plymouth, Massachusetts. 5. In November 1943, the unit boarded a ship in Boston harbor and sailed to England. 6. Soldiers who go through Basic Training hold the rank of Private (Recruit) no stripe. After about six months’ time in service, the soldier was promoted to Private First Class (one stripe). After two years, the soldier was promoted to Technician 5th grade (two stripes with a letter “T” under the stripes). This is not a leadership rank and considered the senior lower enlisted rank before the NCO grades (Non-Commissioned Officers). 7. If there are NCO positions available like Tank Commander, Section Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Squad Leader, Assistant Squad Leader, Operations Sergeant and Company First Sergeant, a soldier can be promoted. It is possible for soldiers of lower rank to hold higher ranked positions awaiting promotion. 8. A soldier working in an NCO position, can be promoted to Corporal (Assistant Squad Leader or Tank Commander) two stripes. A Tank Commander or Section Leader was authorized the rank of Sergeant (three stripes). The platoon sergeant is authorized the rank of Staff Sergeant (three stripes and one rocker). The company operations sergeant is authorized the rank of Technical Sergeant 2nd Grade (three stripes and two rockers). The senior enlisted soldier in the company is the company first sergeant (three stripes and three rockers with a diamond in the middle). This is the highest rank in the company. 9. Each of the three Tank Platoons is authorized one officer who is either a 2nd or a 1st lieutenant. The Executive Officer is the second in command and is the senior 1st Lieutenant in the company. The Company Commander is authorized to hold the rank of Captain. 10. Ages of your character should be commensurate with time spent in the Army and the rank they hold. As an example, you will not find any 18 year old first sergeants or even 20 year old staff sergeants. Since officers must attend a commissioning source, very few of them will be younger than 20 or 21. A 20-year old 2nd Lieutenant is rare. I graduated Officer Candidate School at age 23 and one of my classmates was 19. That is extremely rare since most officers are college graduates.
Current Date: 25 July 1944 Operatin Cobra has begun!
Letters from the Front is a collection of letters or journal entries from American soldiers serving in Europe. A few letters from the home front have made their way into this collection; shared by the soldiers contributing to this piece of work. It details the brutal realities of war and the compassion of humans caught in an other-worldly existence of horror. The evil is real and these soldiers fought to survive. It was kill or be killed and in some cases; hide just to survive. No one criticized someone for hiding; most would have done the same. But hell, hath taken over and survival is the name of the game.
You are a soldier serving in A Company, 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armor Division. Lieutenant Colonel Creighton Abrams served as Battalion commander of the 37th Tank Battalion throughout most of its time during the war, up until he was promoted to Colonel and assigned as Commander Combat Command A which included both the 37th Tank Battalion and the 53rd Armored Infantry Battalion. The two maneuver battalions fought side by side throughout the entirety of the western campaign from July 1944 until its conclusion in May 1945.
The 37th Tank Battalion was at the tip of the spear as Patton ordered a relief of the 101st Airborne Division at Bastogne following the German 5th Panzer Army’s failed Wacht am Rhein operation. It was soldiers from the 37th Tank Battalion who made first contact with the Screaming Eagles in Bastogne. They continued their advance and trapped several German soldiers on the west side of the Rhein River.
The Tank Battalion had an impressive career at the spearhead of General George S. Patton’s thrusts across France, the Rhein and into the German countryside. One company of the 37th attempted to liberate General Patton’s son in law, LTC John K. Waters from a German Prison Camp 60 miles behind enemy lines. The mission was a failure, but to the Wehrmacht units who fought against the tanks and soldiers of the 37th, they believed they were fighting against an entire division. The Germans called these brave men of the 37th, “Roosevelt’s Butchers”.
Although their advances were rapid, it was not without loss, LTC Abrams fought from the cupola of seven different M4A3 Shermans. He never had one shot out from underneath him but he pushed his machines as hard as he pushed his men. During the relief of the 101st Airborne at Bastogne, C Company of the battalion began with twelve tanks. When the fighting was over, Lieutenant Burgess, C Company Commander could account for only four functioning M4 Shermans. The battalion suffered a 94% turnover rate during the nine and a half months it was in combat. The German losses may have been just as high, but the Germans could not replace their losses as easily as the Americans could. Their fight was a bloody one, tangling with the dreaded German Panthers and Tigers.
Creighton Abrams was promoted to the rank of General in 1964, serving as Deputy Commander, Military Assistance Command in Vietnam, in May 1967, working with his West Point Classmate, William Westmoreland. In 1968, General Abrams replaced Westmoreland as Commander of MAC-V. Before retiring General Abrams was appointed US Army Chief of Staff in 1972. While serving as Chief of Staff, he pushed for the establishment of the 75th Ranger Infantry Regiment. The current Main Battle Tank used by the US Army is named after Retired General Creighton Abrams.
Rules
I am an easy-going person. I tend to be friendly and positive, but passionate about military history. It is what I know best. I do not expect any of you to possess the same amount of knowledge as I, but that is not necessary. I just expect you to know how to write well.
This Role play is not your standard RP where you write up a character sheet on one person and then write about their actions and conversations only. This is a collection of letters written by soldiers serving in the same unit in France (and Germany) during World War II.
1. GM is Gunther, who will write for Lieutenant Carpenter.
2. Write a letter, make an entry into your journal or post a letter from home to your soldier.
3. Please write a minimum of three paragraphs. Have fun with your letter writing or journal entries.
4. Females are allowed. Since some of our best writers in this community are female, I would not want to deprive us of their participation in this fine role play. You are not restricted to writing for only male characters. If you wish to write for female characters, that is fine with me. I realize there no female tankers in the Army during WWII, but we don't have to follow convention on every issue. I am flexible.
5. Posting frequency will be based on the last date I make in my post. I am a busy father of four children who keep me hopping. This hobby is just for fun. Please use dates prior to and including the last date I use in a post. I will update the current date in the OP as it changes. Do not advance the timeline on your own. I intend to follow an historical timeline of where the unit was on what dates and hope to keep the flow in a chronological order. Telling a story that happened several days ago is perfectly fine.
6. Please communicate with me and the others so we know what you are up to.
7. If you would like to post censored items, check out this list here.

Quotes or Sayings: “Those who fail to learn the lessons of the past are doomed to repeat them.” – Winston Churchill paraphrasing George Santayana. “If you’re going to fight, fight like the third monkey on the ramp to Noah’s ark and brother…It’s starting to rain.”

Advice To The World: Forgive the actions of those who came before us. Behaviors we consider heinous crimes today were generally accepted practices many years ago.

<div style="white-space:pre-wrap;">I am a veteran of the United States Army and the US Army National Guard. I spent three years on Active Duty serving in the 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) at Ft. Carson, CO, and the 3rd Armor Division at Kirch Göns, West Germany. I spent 18 years in the Army National Guard with the 26th Infantry Division <span class="bb-i">"Yankee"</span> and 29th Infantry Division (Light), <span class="bb-i">"The Blue and the Gray"</span>. At the very least, my characters are always veterans.<br><br>I have been writing for pleasure for at least 35+ years but only got into forum-based Role Playing about eighteen years ago. When I say echelon, I mean Army, Corps, Division, Brigade/Regiment, Battalion/Squadron, Company/Troop/Battery, Platoon, and Squad/Section.<br><br>When I was a student in High School, I used to play Dungeons & Dragons. Recently, I have been DMing a 5e campaign of my creation for my son and his friends. 5e is so much less cumbersome than earlier editions of D&D. I do have an interest in Tolkien-esque fantasy-styled Role Plays as well. Time travel has always been a fun genre for me, but to do it well, one must have a firm grasp of historical facts.<br><br>There are only a few fanfictions I will participate in; Star Wars and Star Trek are two of them. I want to do an exclusively Klingon RP one of these days. I also avoid Canon characters.<br><br>I have real-world martial arts experience. <br><br>Krav Maga is an Israeli martial art form that employs practical self-defense techniques drawing forms & techniques from Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Taekwando. :(]<br><br>Over two years ago I completed my first novel, a science fiction set in the 24th century. It focuses on a Private Military Corporation solely employed by the earth government. I started a second book in November 2022 and hope to work on that this summer when I have more time.<br><br>Send me a PM for a Role Play or if you would like to see what sort of an army I could build for you.<br><br>--Gunther (AKA: Old School)<div class="hider-panel"><div class="hider-heading"><button type="button" class="btn btn-default btn-xs hider-button" data-name="Gunther">Gunther [+]</button></div><div class="hider-body" style="display: none"><span class="bb-b"><div class="bb-h2">Character Summary</div></span><br><br>Name: Gunther<br>Aliases: <font color="#1b1464"><span class="bb-i">Landain</span></font><br>Age: old (I was around when George Washington was a Lieutenant)<br>Birthday: August 12<br>Ethnicity: French, English, & Seneca (Iroquois Confederation)<br>Location: New England<br>Gender: Male<br>Higher Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science & Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice<br>Occupation: Substitute School Teacher<br>Languages: English, Spanish, German & a little French<br>Years RPing: 18<br>Preferred RP Section: Advanced or Casual <br>RP Level: Advanced<br>Dedication Level: Moderate<br>Biggest RP Pet Peeve: People who do not communicate with the group and drop. He attends Catholic mass with his family regularly and attempts a life free from sin. He can be a very moody person swinging from very warm, friendly, and extroverted to quiet and secluded. He hates winter; January and February make him very depressed. Gunther loves his children and would do anything for them and his wife. <br><br>Gunther is a morning person, but that comes from a life of serving in the military. He would rather go to bed early and get up early; prefers to exercise in the morning over working out just before bed. His chief flaw is saying what pops into his head unrestrained without thinking it over before letting fateful words spill out, full-fledged Gryffindor.<br><br>Habits: Smiling, unprovoked singing, talking with strangers & Coca-Cola<br>Hobbies: Krav Maga, Running, Movies, reading, writing, Military History & Playing games with his children.<br>Most recent hobby: Warhammer Age of Sigmar and 40,000. I enjoy the hobby even though I rarely get time to participate. Currently, I try to limit my stories to one at a time. Unfortunately, I rarely find one I enjoy and others are willing to write in. When I do, they die way too early. <br>Life Before You Came To Role Player Guild: It was very different.
