Bio

Hey all, JB here.

I'm a DM for a large number of games here on RPG, as well as a player in several others. Many of the games I run are overly complex, or they involve Dungeons and Dragons (which is also overly complex!).

I work 40+ hours a week, and am the proud father of two tiny terrors named Chibi and Chibette and married to my beautiful Wifey. As such, I am quite busy more often than not. I typically write 2-5 paragraphs per reply and try to maintain an excellent level of grammar. If you noticed me glancing at your profile, I probably was looking to see if you would be a good match for my RPing style. Even if I didn't send a PM to you, feel free to send one back!

I enjoy 1x1 RPs and small groups. I'm fond of medieval, steampunk, and futuristic settings, and I'll jump into romance, adventure, and slice of life RPs fairly quickly, although supernatural (vampires, werewolves, etc) RPs get old for me pretty quickly. If you're looking for an RP partner and I've glanced at your profile, then I'm most likely willing to give it a shot, but decided against PMing you because I'm actually kinda shy. But I'm always looking for a new friend!

Please feel free to say hi at any time!

As the transparent sphere around the wolf was dispelled, the relieved look on its visage was evident to all of us. The coral drakes nearly lashed out, but a snarl from the Theullai was enough to stay their blows. The drakes laid their ears back... or I assume those were their ears, and slinked away, leaving the ship and returning to the gate.

The Theullai's attention returned to the tiny and potentially tasty morsel of a gnome, bringing its jaw down to her level. One of the wolf's teeth were as tall as she was, and his breath was worse than the stench of Dyn's breath after curry day, and more frigid than a snowstorm in the Fridge. His voice sounded like a cross between a howling wind and the crunch under your boots on freshly-fallen snow.

“Thy words bore me, Daughter of Man,” the wolf retorts in Koan’s direction. “And shouldst thee desire thine weapons retrieved, Dragonspawn, I suggest thou dive into the water and find those that sailed past in thine haste. But...”

The Theullai’s attention once more returned to Eliza, and his eyes lowered to be at her level. “Thou intriguest me, Gem-Soul. I shall answer thine myriad questions. In the Plane of Water, it is wet. I have charged myself with guarding the Gate, as the last Steward was slain previously. The drakes are more enslaved allies than friends, and I enjoy petting, but thou wouldst find the experience would leave thee without the use of thine hand. However, the most important of thy questions takes longer to answer.”

The wolf glanced towards the Gate, then back to the ship. “Dwellers of the Sky-Sea, as thou hast proven thine strength and kindness, I beseech thy assistance in this matter. Thy world and mine have become intertwined beyond their natural boundaries. The fate of both of our worlds hang in the balance. I had misjudged thee as mere pirates worthy of naught but destruction. Prove to me thou art worthy of salvation!”

Welcome to the end of your first combat! I wanted to follow up with a few notes. Please read carefully!

1) I mentioned this a few times, but I want to just make it perfectly clear. I messed up on this battle. It was significantly harder than I intended, and you have received bonus experience for my error. I think you all handled the combat itself tremendously well (no one is dead, and the combat was well beyond "Deadly" levels). Future combat will be adjusted to match your power level a little better. In terms of experience gains, D&D is balanced around the party fighting several battles before leveling up. Because slow progression is fun for no one, I will be bolstering combat experience with milestone experience as I see fit. Translation: you will also gain exp after completing certain missions.

A couple reasons why this combat was stronger than intended: A) In my previous game that I DM'd, everyone had magic items that were a bit too powerful, and my combat calcs were adjusted upwards for that. I should have noted this and fixed my calcs before this battle. B) I decided to test out a carry-over idea from Pathfinder where you attribute feats and abilities to enemies as fitting their level. While I don't think this is a bad idea, I think I will need to be careful which feats I choose. Great Weapon Master is one of the strongest feats in the game, and I gave it to the strongest enemy. While the feat did turn a couple of hits into misses, it also nearly oneshot the character who should be most tanky. I will adjust this in the future.

I will add that while this fight was certainly more dangerous than intended, it will not be more dangerous than potential encounters in the future (once you have some better gear and more experience). High level boss encounters -should- be nail-biting. A couple of ruffians in the street? Less so.

2) Combat in D&D is intended to be fast-paced and fairly brutal. In a large number of combat scenarios, there will be a potential for a peaceful outcome to combat, especially when the enemies are not obviously monstrous or evil. The likelihood of success, however, may not be very high, and it drops to zero if the enemies are harmed and they feel they have a chance for success. I do not require you to kill every enemy you encounter, and I provide full exp benefits no matter how an encounter is completed. However, killing or incapacitating an enemy generally allows you to pick their pockets, gather materials, take their weapons. Peaceful solutions may sometimes yield other rewards, sometimes better or sometimes worse. Depends on the situation!

3) I would like everyone to learn combat terms and limitations. I need you to be able to roll attacks and saves without asking what to add. Everyone should have their attack bonuses listed on their sheet. You do not add any other values unless a feature specifically tells you that you do. Terms like Attack of Opportunity, Advantage, etc need to be in your vernacular. I know this is a Beginner's Game, but I need you to read the combat rules as well. I understand some things are complicated or nuanced. Please take this chance outside of combat to ask questions. Spellcasters should thoroughly read your spells, as well as the spells you haven't prepared or learned to decide whether they will be useful. If you do not have a copy of the PHB, please let me know. Online information is not always trustworthy, but I can link you info that is.

On a similar note, I will tell you if something you do doesn't work or requires a roll. I also strongly suggest you do not offer to gimp yourself, especially mid-combat. I design these fights with idea that people will use their best options to the best of their ability. Deciding that you should have disadvantage after taking a single wound or saying that your weapon breaks with no triggering event will serve to make your allies very frustrated, and you probably won't have a good time either. There are enemies that can impose these effects on you. Don't gimp yourself unnecessarily.

4) Less pressing, but I have included the final map for the encounter in the 0th post, in case people are interested about placement, etc.

5) In regards to posting times: I would like people to maintain the pace that you saw in this combat. If you have nothing to add, let me know so I'm not waiting for you while everyone else has posted, but I expect contribution and reaction from everyone with some frequency. RPing is about talking about your character. It's about being descriptive. Being descriptive is not showing off. If you read a book and the author never explains the thoughts and motivations of the characters, they feel flat and boring. No one wants their characters to feel like that.

The aftermath of this combat is a good chance to practice. Your characters all have some opinion on what happened: thoughts about how the combat was handled, the actions of your new ally, speculation on who the enemy is. I would like to see a good solid post from everyone on this combat if possible, even if you do not say a single word out loud. Again, that is not showing off. That is good writing.

On the other hand, there is such a thing as purple prose when writing can be excessive. I don't believe I have ever stated a minimum post length for this RP. Don't pad on an entire paragraph that gives no insight into your character's thoughts and actions. Trimming purple prose while adding intriguing information is my goal for RPing. As a DM, I love to see how your character thinks. As I am not a player, it's my main source of enjoyment for an RP. Please don't deny me that :P
The Drifter glared at Lex and Arthera, but let out a grunt as the arrow stuck between his shoulder blades. "Murderers..." he grunted. "You're just as bad as--"

The sound of Ulor's return and the subsequent blast of eldritch energy silenced the withered man, a necrotic swirl dropping him gently to the ground.

@Mahz - Thanks for the 0th post option! Makes combat really easy to work with when you have multiple GMs. Here's a 0th post in use right now~
"It's... the fal'Cie..." Julian barely had time to get the words out of his mouth when the vision took over, assaulting his senses with myriad images. When they finally faded, pain seared his right hand, and he stared. "The mark... of the l'Cie. This wasn't supposed to happen." He glared up at Shemhazai, stepping forward. "How dare you?! Taking innocent lives for no reason? We were going to learn from you, help you! And now..."

"You will help us," the whispers continued. "You are now our l'Cie. Do as you have been bidden, and face your own mortal destruction." The figure strained against the chains, and the links began to snap as it wrenched itself free. Shemhazai now stood before them, and its form was made clear. Shemhazai was clearly feminine, but with the body of a mechanical centaur. Her arms appeared to be formed from razor-sharp pikes that she now flashed at the group. "Come and meet your destiny!"

As the last blow of l'Cie magic from Nadia hit Shemhazai, she gave a quiet chuckle. "You have proven yourselves well," she said quietly, as if she were straining for each word. "My time has come to an end. You shall carry on our story. You shall be our Pride and our Vengeance. Fare the well."

With a snap of her fingers, another surge of energy exploded throughout the room, blasting open the doorway behind the group and continuing throughout the whole warehouse. Where previously one could hear sounds of blades clashing and shouts of victory or defeat, now an utter silence filled the area. Shemhazai looked down on the group momentarily before she stumbled forward, collapsing to the ground. "Make... us proud... again..." she whispered before her body disintegrated into a flood of rose petals.

You have defeated Shemhazai. You gain the following rewards: 2 Potions, 800 Gil, 6 CP. The Potions and Gil are shared among all party members.

As Katia watched the final raven fly away in fear, she dug out the gem she had earlier pocketed and examined it closer. Why a bird would be condensed into this tiny orb was beyond her, but she knew one person who would know. Ever since Katia had known her, Wick had been ready with a kind smile and an insight into the arcane, especially with magical devices. When it was obvious that the bird had no intention of returning, Katia hopped down the tree, swinging between branches to land safely on the ground.

Milya, some assistance please!” Katia called out, using her pet name for Wick as she approached Theodore. She looked down to the shorter ranger, giving an apologetic shrug. ”I hope you do not think ill of me, Teddy. It was the fastest way I could ensure the Really Big Crow did not fly away with you. My next option was to jump on its back and force it to land one way or another, but that would likely have ended poorly for all of us.”

She turned her attention to Wick, holding out the orb. “You can tell us all what this is, right? I know it’s magic, but that’s about it. When I hold it, I see them again. The birds: but not angry. Majestic and beautiful, caressed by the wind. I propose we rest, let milya look over these stones, and journey on when our wounds are tended. We have journeyed far already, perhaps to another place beyond what we had ever dreamed before.” Katia plopped down at the base of the tree, leaning against its trunk. “This place is fun!”

At the sound of Ronnie's voice, Brandon let out a quiet chuckle. He stood near a rosebush full of some of the most beautiful roses one could hope for. Without turning his head, he spoke up, his voice sounding as if it were lost in thought. "You know, I bought a dozen roses when I got here. Spent a lot on 'em. Thought it would be a nice gift for Liz. Guess I should have saved the money. I doubt she even noticed."

Brandon turned towards the pair that had come to join him. Ronnie had always been a bro, often knowing the right thing to say, or at least the best way to say the wrong thing. And Penny was one of the few girls in the group he could actually talk to at length. They had no need to come check on him, but they did anyways. The thought sent a small smile to the corner of his lip. "They're gorgeous though. These roses. So much nicer than the store-bought ones. She must take good care of them."

The roses had little to do with the issue at hand, but Brandon didn't seem to care. He began to slowly stroll back towards the others. "Thanks," he said to Ronnie. "Sometimes being ourselves gets other people hurt. Sometimes it helps. I just... I don't like seeing my friends cry. I've said it before: you can say or do whatever to me, but you don't hurt my friends. I just needed to get out of there before I ruined the whole summer, ya know?" Brandon clapped Ronnie on the shoulder. "We probably oughta get back, yeah?"

Maybe a kicked one as well, granted if that was added it would be nice if Gm's had a "kicked" list to make it easier to keep up with through out all their rp's instead of having to keep a separate one.

If there were a ban/kicked list, I would prefer it to be visible to GM/co-GMs only, however (showing as dropped to others). But it's not a bad idea.
