Bio

Hey all, JB here.

I'm a DM for a large number of games here on RPG, as well as a player in several others. Many of the games I run are overly complex, or they involve Dungeons and Dragons (which is also overly complex!).

I work 40+ hours a week, and am the proud father of two tiny terrors named Chibi and Chibette and married to my beautiful Wifey. As such, I am quite busy more often than not. I typically write 2-5 paragraphs per reply and try to maintain an excellent level of grammar. If you noticed me glancing at your profile, I probably was looking to see if you would be a good match for my RPing style. Even if I didn't send a PM to you, feel free to send one back!

I enjoy 1x1 RPs and small groups. I'm fond of medieval, steampunk, and futuristic settings, and I'll jump into romance, adventure, and slice of life RPs fairly quickly, although supernatural (vampires, werewolves, etc) RPs get old for me pretty quickly. If you're looking for an RP partner and I've glanced at your profile, then I'm most likely willing to give it a shot, but decided against PMing you because I'm actually kinda shy. But I'm always looking for a new friend!

Please feel free to say hi at any time!

This is an EPIC campaign, starting at level 20. Many of the enemies will be of my own creation. All Unearthed Arcana, Xanathar's, and (most) Plane Shift material is allowed, but I am not allowing homebrewed classes and races (it's hard enough to balance them for 5th level encounters). We will be a small group of adventurers that are dedicated to joining an ongoing and extended hunt against all the greatest foes in D&D. Fair warning: I am not going to allow wanton swapping of PCs without a good reason once we start. It's difficult at level 5 to make that work, and nearly impossible at lvl 20.

I will be using the Three-Pillars Experience model where we level up after 100 XP. Characters are welcome to have 20 levels in any class, or they may multiclass. I will be using custom character advancement rules for PCs over lvl 20 as listed below. The maximum number of levels anyone can have in any class is 20.

We will be starting at level 20 and going up from there. We will be using a 25-point buy using Pathfinder rules, and starting wealth will be 20,000gp + 1d10×250 gp, two Rare items, and one Very Rare item of your choice, plus standard starting gear. You may purchase magic items with your starting gold (here is a good list). OOC and dice rolls will take place on Discord. If any PC joins after we begin, the character generation rules will be different.

I have been told that my style of campaign is similar to West Marches, although I don't know that style personally. My intent is for us to be commissioned to hunt foes, learn about the foes, and prepare ahead of time. The parties will split into groups that best fit the encounters, and as such, will not have any pre-conceived structured parties. In fact, we may have some combat situations where the full party might fight.
To anyone else who might be interested, we have room for just one more person, as we've decided to split the party due to the overwhelming response. Character sheets are due by Wednesday 27th at 6 pm EST. There is still time!

It seemed that they were doomed to keep fighting. Katia frowned at the proclamation that words meant little in this realm, that all they knew was claw and steel. This sort of blind hatred for reason was one of the aspects of humanity that drove her ever forward to find a place of calm. This world would never be that place as long as they held combat over discussion in all things. In her mind, this was the height of stupidity, possibly what caused the influx of shadows in the first place.

She was about to retort when Theodore took her spot, claiming never to be a pawn to mindless conflict, yet showing his own zealous hypocrisy when pledging himself to the same. The tabaxi lay a calming hand on the ranger's shoulder. "I believe that is what this world wishes us to do: be Champions of Light to balance the overwhelming forces of Darkness. In showing our zeal for the Light, we will drive back the Shadows to where they should have been all along. Do our paths not align? His end goal may be different than ours, but the way of achieving it is all the same."

Blinded by one's own religion, purified by Light to the point where all else seemed impure. This was why Katia never cared to partake in the worship of any one deity. Even now with the words of her patron weighing on her, she wondered that she was the one chosen. Never had she shown dedication or passion for any one thing for long, asides perhaps her sporadic monastic training. But now that she was forced on this path regardless if her own will, would that be forced to change? Katia lightly patted the Ranger's shoulder before removing her hand and hoping Theodore would not test the paladin's description of the combative nature of this place.

@Hekazu

Bringing balance between the Light and Darkness... was that truly why they ended up in this world tainted by shadow? As a monk, Katia had been trained in the importance of balance: to center oneself was the ultimate goal. Only then could one achieve enlightenment. Balance was something Katia had always struggled with, however. There was always something pulling her forward to the next place, the next goal. It had only been recemtly, when Katia had stayed with Wick in her place, that Katia's insatiable wanderlust had temporarily been quelled.

The balance that this Green Man spoke of was a type that Katia had never truly considered before. Darkness, of course, was dispersed by light, but the deepest darknesses were made more stark by the presence of light; a bonfire at night would dim the stars, and made one night-blind to the threats beyond its reach. Likewise, darkness made the light more poignant; a candle shines brighter at night than in the light of the sun.

Add to this, Katia's task was not to create more light in the darkness, but to split the flame between the pillars. Perhaps with the right incantations, a second flame may have been possible, but the question then would be why? Where would the shadows have retreated to when faced by the brilliance of day from all sides?

And so, despite the words being said might be thought of as a form of treachery to some of the more devout among them, the words made sense to Katia. "Why could we not have talked this over without a fight and save us all the time and hassle?" Katia asked, still unsure whether this paladin were on their side or just a neutral arbiter of their fates. She at least would have listened. Perhaps in this world of constant conflict, diplomacy was a lost art.

Xielan Island Ferry

Risha and Ming chatted amicably for a while as the ferry slowly made its way from the city of Goka to Xielan Island's New Harbor. She seemed keenly interested in the various exploits of the group, happy to find some competitors who were willing to talk, as well as to share in the delicious pork buns. "Don't fill up on these too quickly," she suggested, "or else you'll be too full to sample Yon Loi's famous noodles!"

As they approached the island, Risha excused herself, thanking Ming for the chat before heading astern. The group watched the harbor approach, and dozens of townsfolk stood by the docks waiting for their arrival. As contestants disembark, townsfolk shower them with cherry blossoms and hand out ceramic cups filled with warm, pungent liquor. The crowd forms a reception that leads to the center of town, where a crowded noodle house, Yon Loi’s, serves as the hub of all activity in New Harbor. The noodle house is a large, open-air structure centered around a courtyard filled with long, shaded tables for commoners. Smaller round tables fill a roofed balcony surrounding the courtyard, from which wealthier patrons and the tournament elite may look over the establishment. The kitchen sits on the ground floor, behind a short partition.

The townsfolk help in seating and serving the newly arriving contestants. Each receives a complimentary bowl of salty noodle soup containing fish and vegetables (beyond this first bowl, each additional serving costs 5 sp). There are dozens of patrons crowded into the courtyard, many of whom must be contestants in the tournament. Risha can be seen flitting among the various contestants, chatting with them about their stories. The atmosphere is one of amiable competitiveness, and several of the combatants can be seen challenging each other to arm-wrestling competitions or various displays of flexibility or stamina.

DM Note: Feel free to interact with a few people if you wish. Perhaps you can learn more about your competition! Here is a map of Yon Loi's Noodle House with more info.
@ihinka you only double the damage dice, not the dex mod. Most DMs have you roll the dice twice.

Got room for 1 more?

I haven't closed applications yet, but I will definitely have to cut some of those who have already applied. You are free to be an applicant if you wish! Just say the word and I'll toss you a discord link.

These bandits had no honor, as evidenced by their cowardly captain fleeing for his life before their fight had even really begun. The Brown Bear danced on its hind legs, its maw snatching up one foe while its claws scraped across the other, sending both crashing to the ground on top of the crazed victim from before.

This fight wasn't over yet, not by a long shot. The bear rushed forward after the captain, passing through the beneficial healing from the other druid. A snarl escaped the bear's maw, slowly turning into another roar of anger as if to tell them to leave and never return.

@ihinka - You're next!
Since there's a crossbow bolt up Bobbin's cloaca, I think it's fair to say they have ranged weaponry.
