Andy's eyes lit up at the mention of Arthur. Could Thanatos get a message to him? But her hopes were instantly dashed when he said to ask Hades' other child. That meant Nicos would be there. She took a deep breath and tried to center herself. At least now they knew the doors would be there.

They had to get moving. Those who were going to open the doors needed to go. "How long do we have?" Andy asked. It was a broad question. She meant both how long would the doors be there for them and how long did they have once they got to them. She hadn't been with the other group that had already interacted with the doors and didn't super know the rules around them.

"Put the weapons back into rotation. Burn everything else." Niah ordered the man. "Thanatos is in the Arena. Nancy went to meet with him. I'll be heading that way now." Hopefully they'd return with new orders. Things felt like they were settling down and a path to solve what was happening was before them.

Niah left Nancy's tent and hurried to the Arena. She joined the others gathered there. She wondered how much she had missed. Where were the gates? She didn't ask though she waited. She saw Andy looking sad. Was it bad news?

Andy froze for a second as Casper pulled her and Zari into a hug, but then she relaxed and leaned it. His response made her feel really bad about the way they had left. She had been afraid they'd be mad, but...sad hadn't been what she was expecting. God, she didn't want to think what her conversation with Magento would eventually be. She needed to pull that bandaid off soon. She told Max why she had Selene and then took a deep breath and started talking explaining everything as fast as she could as succinctly as she could.

"I just went with Zari to her time, which if you guys had been listening was in the future. Also, a different universe, but we went to school here. Then it turned out your kids were going here too. I'm sorry I didn't say anything. She asked and I just leaped at it. I had Selene and didn't want to deal with everything right then and there. So I thought if I went forward a bunch of time it would be okay. But it's been really weird and hard and I missed you guys. I didn't know I would. But I do. I'm sorry. Maybe I should have just gone to the hotel instead of coming to your place as a surprise. But Dorian and Danni invited me over, even before they knew who I was."

The words all came tumbling out of her mouth. She took another breath. "And I don't know what to do with her. I'm so scared I'll fail at keeping her contained. So yeah, you can have her for now. If I had stayed with you guys it would have been different. I'd be grown up. But I'm not. I'm still seventeen. I'm not thirty-four. I don't know what I'm doing." Most of what she said was to Casper as Max was busy making sure Victoria wasn't melting, and whatever Firestar wanted. But she wanted to get it all out. She needed to. This had been bottled up for too long.

Connie was born to a backwaters hick of a mother who believed God had punished her with Connie. Evelyn had become pregnant with Connie after an ill-conceived one-night stand at a Mardi Gras party with some friends. Evelyn didn’t even know the man's name. She dropped out of college and moved back to her hometown where she hid from everyone. After Connie was born she went out more, mostly to church to atone for her actions.

Connie's abilities were seen as the worst possibility of a deal between Satan and God. Connie's mother believed she was suffering as Job had, and to free herself of the curse, she must cleanse Connie. The woman's definition of cleansing grew worse as Connie's abilities grew. These abilities were never entirely under control, though.

Somehow word got to Connie's father, Andrew Winthrop, about her situation. How word got to him was never something he told Connie, but late in the night, he took the small 10-year-old from her home and freed her. Andrew used a sling-ring. It turned out that he was part of the Masters of the Mystic Arts.

For the first few years after rescuing Connie, Andrew was a constant in her life. He did little without her, even going so far as to take time off 'work'. When Connie showed she could control her innate magical ability under his tutelage Andrew was incredibly proud. From him, Connie did learn a fair amount of healing magic. He couldn’t teach her about her transformation magic.

Eventually, Andrew was requested to return to the field. He asked that Connie be taught in the ways of protecting the Sanctums and her magical talents. Doctor Strange offered her a place in his Academy. Connie jumped at the chance. Her father, while a bit nervous that Connie's personality would clash in a 'school' setting, decided it might actually be the better choice. Giving her socialization with people her own age who were also different so she wouldn't have to hide her true nature. She has been attending Strange Academy since she was twelve years old in their youth program.

Finley was born in a strongly caste system of the Fae. They hate it. The Otherworld was their only home for a long time. Now Dysphoria has arrived and it’s time to GTFO.

Their family was not high in the hierarchy. Often finding themselves having to follow the whims of their Lady Opal Luna Saturnyne. Finley saw their parents caught in the malstrom of machinations that the Courts play. As Finley came into their majority, they too started to get pulled into the whims of those higher in the caste than them. Prior to gaining Dysphoria, Finley toed the line of respectability in their world. They are constantly testing the rules and limits. As such they’ve been in trouble a fair amount.

Finley’s parents cared for them, but the pressures of their society made it hard to be anything but distant. When Dysphoria joined Finley they were able to argue that going to Earth was the best choice. Many of the other Fae shunned Finley after this happened. But they were happier than they had been their whole life. They finally felt free to be themself.

Mandy placed her hands gently on her cousin's. "Slow and clear is better than fast." She smiled. "Okay," She looked between her dad and cousin. "We should pack up my car and leave then. We can go to Hermes' house get Auntie and Nana, as well as his things from there. Then we will leave the city.

"Please let mom know." Mandy told her dad. "Get your things together. I don't know when we'd get back here." The car would be packed, and only Mandy's car as an SUV could hold everyone, they'd have to be friendly with each other.

”Text your mom and let her know we will come get her and Nana. Can you also find out where we should go?" Mandy had no idea where to even look for that information.

”I'll get my vet tech bag." She said heading to her room. Mandy also would have to gather all the stuff for the cat. Luckily she had already finished packing for school before it was canceled when everything started going wrong.

Andy was nervous. It had been reassuring to talk with Dorian, she at least knew he didn't hate her for not telling him the truth. Now she just had to get past the hurdle of seeing four people from her past. She didn't know Ben well. He probably wouldn't even recognize her. Well, maybe, he had been around, but as a ghost. Casper, James and Max though. They had worked together. She had abandoned them. Just left without saying anything.

She'd be holding Zari's hand if her own weren't sweating like crazy. Andy only even partially took in that something was wrong with Firestar before the portal had opened and there was Max. He looked directly at her. He knew her. His eyes stopped on Zari and Mads too. The last one she didn't know why. Her stomach twisted. How mad?

James saw them too. Recognition written all over his face. Ben and Casper didn't notice. Andy wasn't surprised by either of those. She didn't know what James or Max was thinking but damn was she scared. Why was she so scared to see them? Her heart almost seemed to rise into her throat. She had to ask them something. But they were talking to their kids and Percy. Max wanted to speak to Victoria.

She hung back, standing slightly behind Zari. A suit case of her things on one side and the cat bag with her mom on the other. She could wait her turn. Wait for things to calm down. Andy wouldn't go through the portal until she knew if she could bring Selene or not. It would be surprising if they were alright with it. So she'd have to run the bag back to her room, and hope that she'd be safe in the school for the few days she'd be gone. Andy wished she had someone she could trust to watch Selene. But if there had been she wouldn't have been the one to end up with the doll.

Loud hissing was coming from the cat bag. Andy was trying very hard to ignore it.

Andy had sent a request for a meeting with Dr. Whitehall. She had promised her mother that she would think about the situation with Zari.

It wasn’t that Andy didn’t love Zari. She did. With all of her heart. But did Zari love her? She hadn’t said it. She had been so distant. Zari had always been on the distant side. Andy had fallen fast. The only sign that Andy had that Zari loved her in any capacity was that she had asked Andy to join her in the future.

When the time for the meeting arrived Andy knocked on Dr. Whitehall’s door lightly. She was going to have to explain a lot in this session. At least it wouldn’t be as much as last time. And it wouldn’t be her history as much. It would be figuring out what she wanted to do.

Dr. Whitehall had been finishing up a report when she got the request for a meeting with Andy. She had been looking forward to seeing some of the students again for further aid. After setting things up Dr. Whitehall got her office in order. Now that there as a relationship here Maeve didn’t bother with setting up the office like she did last time. Instead it looked like her regular office, complete with comfy seating and her desk with some pictures of her and some of her friends as well as the love of her life, Settler, a rescue Golden Retriever.

She heard the knock and sat down on one of the armchairs, ”Come in.”

Andy entered the room, she froze for a second as she realized the room was different from last time. Her eyebrows furrowed, but then she took a seat. ”It’s different.”

”This is how it always looks. I figured I didn’t need to have it set up like last time since we are meeting again but I can always change it if it helps. How have you been Andy?”

Andy nodded, accepting that answer. ”I’m mostly okay. I’ve made some friends. The guy I told you about who’s parents I knew in the past. He knows now. We talked about it. And I made a couple of other friends.” She smiled. Happy with the progress she had made in trying to make friends. She hadn’t changed herself to do it either. In fact she had opened up about who she really was with them.

”I need to talk about something specific though.” She frowned looking down at her hands. She didn’t have a coffee cup to hold and so was fidgeting a bit. ”I took my girlfriend on a date. I told her how I feel and she didn’t say it back. That’s fine. She doesn’t have to. But I feel like I am more committed to the relationship than she is. I mean I literally left my time to join her here.” Andy didn’t have the words to really explain what was happening. Even after the talk with her mom.

Maeve nodded as Andy went into it. She also took note of the fidgeting. Maeve conjured up some fidget toys that appeared on the table in front of them. ”To help if you want. I know I need to do something with my hands sometimes.”
“I am happy to hear you are making friends. I know that was a worry for you. And opening up with that guy took a lot of courage. I hope you are as proud of yourself as I am. But let’s get into what you came here for. You went on a date with your girlfriend and opened up to her and she did not do so back and you are worried you are more committed to the relationship than she is.”

“Tell me Andy, has your girlfriend said or done anything outside of this date to make you question if you are more invested than she is?”

Andy picked up a cubed thing that folded in on itself over and over. It only made a soft clacking noise as she went through the folds. ”Thank you. I am proud of myself. I hadn’t expected it to happen, and I was really scared. I probably wouldn’t have if he hadn’t found a photo of me from Genosha. But I plan to visit his parents during the Contest so it would have come to light then. I’m looking forward to that.” She was avoiding answering. She knew it. Pausing for a moment, watching the cubes she didn’t say anything until finally she said.

”We’ve kissed twice. The first time, I was rude. During the date was the second kiss. I asked her if she wanted to kiss, after I told her all of my feelings. Her response was just ‘I don’t see why not.’ I know you said outside the date, but that’s the thing, there isn’t anything. I have to ask.”

”Kissing is a big step in a relationship though. What do you mean by being rude?”

”I didn’t ask her. After she said it was fine. But it wasn’t nice of me.” She looked up. ”It was right after I had become an energy vampire too. I didn’t even know what that meant yet.” Except for the dead crows around them. That should have been enough information.

”Consent is important, yes. It sounds to me like your girlfriend isn’t quite ready for that large of a step, but that does not necessarily mean she does not care about you the same way you do for her. Different people experience relationships in a multitude of ways, usually going back to their relationship with their parents or caregivers and seeing how those relationships pan out. On top of other mental health-related things.”

“The important thing to do is to talk about it. Much like opening yourself up to your friends. I would encourage, if you did, to use “I” statements so as to not accuse her of anything, but also understand you have your own love languages compared to her. It’s important to understand pacing as well. You may be ready for more, she may not be.”

“And above all, know that all of your feelings are valid. It’s a tricky situation to be in, but love is an amazing, albeit tough thing to have.”

Andy let out a soft sigh. Some of the tension she had been carrying since the conversation with her mom was released. Sure, she might have gone too far in too fast. But there might still be a chance. If she could get Zari to talk about it. She didn’t want to feel like she was forcing the conversation. ”Thank you. I think I can work with that. It might take some time. But I think I can. I care for Zari a lot. I’m just afraid I did something stupid by following her here if she doesn’t have the same feelings for me.”

”There are many examples of people changing their lives for someone else. I can’t speak on that too much but sometimes it ends poorly, sometimes not. The important thing is that it is your life and decisions made should take what you need and want into account. One-sided relationships are not healthy. If you both care for each other, a conversation like this can help though it will take work. If you want I can recommend a counselor who specializes with couples to help or you both can even come see me if you want. Up to you though, but I believe you can have this necessary conversation. You’ve already demonstrated courage in doing so with others.”

Could she get Zari in to see Dr. Whitehall or someone else with her? She almost felt like it would be received with either a ‘no problem’ or would be questioned why Andy thought it was necessary. She chewed on her lip.

”I’ll talk to her.” She nodded. This was going to suck. But it wasn’t like she could make a decision for both of them. That wasn’t fair. ”Thank you Dr. Whitehall. I needed someone who wasn’t my mom and had a better perspective on the situation.”

”Of course. You mentioned your mother briefly before. Parents have interesting takes on their children’s relationships, for good or bad. Just remember this is your life, not hers.”

Andy rubbed her face with hands, having dropped the fidget toy in her lap. ”I am not ready for that conversation.” She really wasn’t. She wanted to see Max and the others before daring to even consider talking about Selene in anything but abstract ways. ”I’ll say she definitely has designs for me.” She shook her head. ”But for once I don’t think this had anything to do with that. I think she saw I was upset after the date.” Andy picked up the toy from her lap and placed it back on Dr. Whitehall’s desk. ”Thank you again. I’ll let you know how it goes.” She stood up.

Maeve noted the intense emotions coming up but remained silent. Now was not the time for that conversation. ”It’s a conversation when you are ready for it. And let me know if I can be of further help. Again, I am very proud of you Andy.” Maeve smiled warmly. It was good to see her clients genuinely grow. It made her job worthwhile.

Andy smiled back. Hearing someone was proud of her made her heart twist a little, but warmth went up her cheeks. She ducked her head. ”Thank you.” She felt like she was saying that a lot right now. Andy left the office, letting out a huge sigh. Yeah, she had some work to do.

”Hi Joanie.” Niah gave the little dragon scratches and stood to find her some food when the Legionnaire came into the tent. ”Uh, last I saw her was in the woods. I’ll see if I can find her. What is this about?”

“We just want to know what to do with Leandra’s things.”

Niah nodded. That made sense. She smiled at Joanie. ”Let me feed her real quick and then I’ll go find her.” Joanie would help find Nancy. She wished this could wait. ”For now, put everything in a box. Label it.” What they did with her things from there would have to be figured out.

Niah found some of Joanie’s food and gave her a bit. Then once the small dragon had eaten she asked, ”Help me find Nancy again please.”

”Help find me to do what?” Nancy asked, walking into the tent. There was visible bruising on the exposed portions of her skin from Demi’s attack, and her expression was hard, unreadable. She stared at Niah for a moment, all of the emotions and events from the day fading away for a moment - that was her best friend, a person who meant more than anything else in the world to her - and then suddenly, it all snapped back into perspective. Niah had used her powers on her.

Niah had used her powers on her.

Nancy squared her jaw.

A part of her wanted to rage, to ask Niah how dare she deny her of her agency, of control.

But another part of her was thankful - grateful that Niah had stepped in before things spiraled out of control.

So instead she said nothing else, teetering between two possibilities, between two reactions.

Niah, looked up from Joanie, who left her and went straight to Nancy. Seemingly proud of herself for already succeeding at finding Nancy. Her friend. Why was the Grand Canyon between them? Her heart ached.

”The Legion was wondering what to do with her things. I told them to put them in a box for now. If you want anything else done with them I can pass that order on.” Niah fell into her role as a Senate member. It dropped away though as her eyes noticed the forming bruising. Pain, sorrow, guilt, flashed through her expression.

”I thought you might have gone to get that looked at.” She said softly.

Back at the Fighting Arena, Demi was glad to have some time alone with Zeke for once. ”Ofcourse. I meant every word that I said, to both of you. I want to be better, and I'd love for us to actually get along.” He replied back before a shadowy thing figure appeared, one all to familiar to Demi. Thanatos. He'd met the god once before after offering a hecatomb to him, and had told Alexios to be a god and go find him to fix this damned mess they all made. Demi was tired of cleaning up after the gods, it was time they did it themselves.

It was then he realized two things, one he'd better warn Nancy of this gods arrival, and two, Nancy had some major anger issues and Niah had essentially frozen the fight to save them both. Demi wasn't a betting man, but if he was he'd bet Nancy was pissed. He quickly kissed Zeke on the lips and gave him a worried smile. ”Shit. Sorry babe I got to go, I forgot to tell Nancy something.” He said as he full on sprinted over towards the Roman tents. Luckily Nancy was never very hard to find, unless she wanted to be, but right now it was clear where she would go.

Demi burst into the tent, flaps flying open as he watched Nancy and Niah and immediately froze in place. ”I uh…well…sorry am I interrupting something?”

Nancy was still as Demi suddenly came into the tent - she might have resolved to put her differences with him aside for now, but her knee jerk reaction was to huff ever so slightly, a behavior that would take time to unlearn. She crossed her arms, Joanie perched on her shoulder, her tail wrapping around and falling on the other one. ”... I didn’t need healing. It would have been a waste of resources,” she said stiffly. ”... Burn them,” she then added. She didn’t want a shred of Leandra’s presence left behind.

”I’ll make sure it is done.” Niah nods, her body stiff with the intrusion of Demi. What will happen? She doesn’t know and is nervous. Though, it does relieve some of the pressure from her. She hadn’t known how to proceed. So this diversion might be helpful.

”What brings you here?” She asks Demi.

Demi looked between the two. Clearly Niah had been concerned about Nancy's wounds just as much as Zeke and Demi had. His eyes lingered on the bruise for a beat before shifting his focus back to Niah. ”Oh right. Uh I'll get to that in a second actually. I wasn't expecting you to be here Niah but since you are… I wanted to say thank you. It was stupid of me to fight Nancy, let alone my boyfriend's sister. I'm glad you intervened when you did, even if you had to use your powers to help us.”

The tension was uncomfortable. Nancy didn’t want to be angry with Niah. It wasn’t something that she would choose for herself. She never wanted to feel flames slowly rising up within her, their heat radiating off of her body, as her mind went blank, consumed by rage and nothing else. It was one of the parts of herself that she hated the most. But fighting against her own nature - choosing to be thankful for Niah’s intervention rather than angry at her manipulation? It was difficult, challenging - almost impossible, even. She took short, shallow breaths, resisting the urge to grind her teeth.

”... Yes,” Nancy said lamely, unable to bring herself to finish the sentence - to say thank you, Niah.

Some tension released from Niah’s shoulders. ”You’re welcome. I didn’t want to, but...” She trailed off. ”I didn’t want you get hurt.” She looked at Nancy as she said the last part. But gods she must have hurt her by doing it. ”I’m sorry. I was so afraid.”

Demi blinked, watching as Nancy constipated herself and Niah folded. ”What? No. Niah you have nothing to apologize for. Sometimes things demand you do shitty stuff to help out a friend. And that's OK. You shouldn't feel the need to say sorry about it. And Nancy, please? I think we can do better than a simple yes can't we?” He said crossing his arms and standing in the doorway.’

She looked Niah in the eye, her face twitching as her resolve threatened to crumble, revealing the pain that lurked underneath the anger - the sadness, the hurt that she didn’t allow herself to feel. And then she turned away, feeling her breath quicken even more, her chin starting to wobble. ”It…” Nancy swallowed, trying to eliminate the tremble in her voice. ”It was the right thing to do,” she said quickly, before pinching her eyes closed.

Niah stepped forward, closer to Nancy. She reached forward, wanting to hug Nancy. ”I...You’re my best friend. I don’t want to see you in pain. It’s killing me.”

Nancy let out a shaky breath. That’s all I know. ”I… I’m sorry, Niah,” she said quietly, as tears started to fall. ”... This is my fatal flaw. I have his anger.” Apollo’s rage.

”And mine is loyalty. Not to Rome. To you.”

She was quiet for a moment. ”Everything I have done is for Rome,” Nancy murmured. She then looked back at Niah. ”I think it should have been done for you.”

Tears fell from Niah’s eyes and she stepped even closer to Nancy and held open her arms. Letting Nancy come to her for a hug.

The last vestiges of Nancy’s anger fell away, as she stepped forward and threw her arms around Niah, sobbing quietly into her friend.

Niah sobbed back. So much tension in her body released. She had forgotten Demi’s presence. Just thankful to have her friend.

Demi was extremely proud of Nancy. Watching her set aside her anger and allow vulnerability was a huge step. Maybe they could be friends and watch movies oh my god Zeke and Thanatos. ”Hate to break up this very touching moment but I did come here with a spot of news. Thanatos is here in the Arena, he's found the Doors of Death.”

Nancy pulled away, Joanie having climbed from her shoulders onto Niah’s, currently nibbling away at her hair. ”... What? He found them?” her eyes widened, her adrenaline spiking. Mads. They could get to Mads. They could bring her back. The emotional whiplash was frightening, as the heaviness of sorrow and shame was replaced with sparkling energy and drive.

”Go. I’ll deal with work, and meet you there.” Niah said, shooing them onward. She wiped at the tears on her face with one hand, and reached up to hold Joanie in place with the other.

Andy smiled at the compliment. She didn’t mind the light tap on her side. She was getting ready to move again. Unsure how to answer Kristin’s question about what she wanted to talk about. She had already talked at the beach about her feelings. That was a lot of emotional stuff already.

Then Thanatos was there. She lowered her practice sword and looked over to him as he announced he had found what they were looking for. The door. Mads. She could have her aunt back soon. She needed to let Nancy know.

”Where is it?” She asked. ”We have to gather everyone. But we can head out as soon as possible.” She hadn’t expected the doors for a couple more days she had thought it was on the fourth. But she wasn’t going to complain.

Selene had been quiet for weeks.

There wasn’t much for her to do while trapped inside the acheron. She had already plotted a dozen different ways to punish the Genoshan survivors - and above all else, the pesky warlock who had seen her bound, Maximilian Gray. That had taken her approximately five minutes before her attention span began to wander. And of course, she had ensured to mess with her daughter, weaponizing her fears of her escape against her - it was shocking how much a doll could do with a phone and a voice-to-text application. That had been another five minutes. But there were about 30,000 other minutes that Selene had had to find a way to occupy her time with.

So needless to say, she mostly slept.

Every now and then she gave a good effort to escape from the acheron, to return to the world unbound and set about enslaving those who had wronged her - the warlock would look rather nice at the end of a leash, she mused, baying like a hound. But really, there wasn’t much for her to do. It was all rather boring. So dull, in fact, that when she wasn’t asleep, all she had was to listen to her daughter’s painful fretting - a crueler torture than one Selene could ever have devised.

One she could no longer endure.

“ENOUGH!” Selene screeched, her doll eyes snapping open. “Do you not have a single shred of dignity left to you, child?!” she huffed.

Andy flinched at the yelling. She hadn’t heard much from Selene in long enough that sometimes she forgot about the doll that held her. [color=b71d5d]”Uh, what do you mean?” She asked. Unsure why her mother was yelling.

“I am TIRED of all of this - this pathetic lesbianism!” the doll complained. “If I have to see you pining after a girl who won’t even give you a second look for ONE MORE SECOND, I will find a way to devour my own soul just to end my suffering!”

”She looks at me.” Andy blinked. ”She's just easily distracted.” Andy sat on the edge of the bed. Something had bothered her about their date. When Andy had asked if Zari minded if she kissed her, she had said “I don't see why not." Not yes or please, or even started the kiss. Just, I don’t see why not.

Selene rolled her eyes, using what little control remained to her to bring the doll to its feet, and slowly hobbled across the room, until she was staring up at her daughter from the floor. She wasn’t going to disgrace herself by asking for Andy to lift her up onto the bed. Trapped as she was, she was still the Dark Priestess. “She looks at me,” Selene repeated mockingly. “She looks at you the way she looks at any other, child. Have you ever even kissed her? Do you ever feel like her eyes are for you and you alone?”

”We’ve kissed.” Andy’s face was hot. She sighed and sat on the floor next to her mom. ”But no. I don’t. When I first met her I thought she might be ace. I’ve asked her and she said she wasn’t. I had to explain what it ment. But she said no.”

“Did you ever ask her if she liked women?” her mother asked bluntly.

”Uh, no. She just...seemed to be fine with it. But not, I guess, interested greatly in anything.”

“Has she ever initiated anything?” Selene pressed. “Or is it always you, Luna darling? Must you always take and never receive?”

”No. Nothing.” She sighed. ”I don’t want to only take. I want her to be enthusiastic about me. I gave up so many possibilities. I know what some of the others did and I could have been safe and happy with them. But I came here and it’s been nothing but a struggle. I don’t even think she realizes how much I gave up. At the time I didn’t think I was sacrificing at the time.”

The doll nodded. She loved herself, fully and unconditionally - but if there was a curse to her existence, it was that her power only ever allowed her to take - a curse that she had shared with her daughter. They could take life, could take love, could take kisses - but to receive it, freely and willingly? That was another thing, another path. “You’re dull and sensitive, dear - you’re suffering from moral convictions,” Selene commiserated. “I could show you how to stop - how to be beyond it all. But… that is not your way. So listen to me now, when I tell you this - this girl isn’t your way either. Is it ever happiness you feel with her? Or just relief she hasn’t forgotten you?”

”I do love her. Being around her is a joy. But, I don’t know if she feels that for me?” Andy fought back the burning that was in her eyes. [color=b71d5d]”I like having moral convictions.”[color] She said, thankful for something to focus on other than her fear that she had made a lot of bad choices. She was glad for her current friends at least. Thankful for the healing that had been happening since the whole thing with Arcade.

“The joy of a lover? Or that of a friend?” Selene pressed. “Or perhaps a sister?”

”I don’t know. I never had a relationship before.”

“Well, it’s clear that you’re miserable,” the doll remarked. “And watching you pine after a girl who will never love you the way that you love her is torturous, dear. Even by my standards. Waste your life being less happy than you could - you’re immortal, so your suffering will only grow. Or perhaps take advantage of your beauty, however meager it may be, and do fucking something else!” she hissed.

God getting advice from her mother was probably not a great idea. But this was something that had been bothering her. She put her head on the edge of the bed and thought for a moment. ”Just let it all go?”

“You’re too young to be afraid of the future,” Selene chastised. “Or regretful of the past. You’re only a babe, Luna dear. Once you reach my age, then we can discuss paths not taken.”

She nodded. ”I’ll think about it.” Maybe talk to Dr. Whitehall.

The doll rolled her eyes. “Bah! I tried! Let no one say I did not give you advice! And when you are still breaking your own heart scrambling for meager expressions of affection, do not come crying to me. After all, my child, Mother Knows Best.
Leah & Andy

Of tape and punching bags

It wasn’t quite curfew yet. Andy had been pacing for a bit. Unable to sleep. Zari hadn’t moved into her room yet and even with her pillow she didn’t trust herself. It was like the old days. When she would stick needles in her hand to keep herself awake. Away from nightmares. But those nightmares had stopped because of the pillow. Now it was just the fear of sleepwalking.

She gave up and went to the gym. She had some time before curfew and she needed to get some energy out. Her whole body felt electric, which knowing her it probably was.

Leah was used to staying up late. She often found she didn’t really need as much sleep as other people. Why, she didn’t really think about it. But it mostly stemmed from how much she just didn’t trust her surroundings to be safe. As usual, she was abusing the almighty shit out of a punching bag laced with adamantium fibers, so it wouldn’t break and tear under the strain of those with super strength.

The dull rhythm of her fists rang across the empty gym, and it was easy to hear her before even walking in.

Andy smiled a little as she entered the room. Unsurprised that Leah was there. She didn’t want to freak her out and considered how to warn Leah that she was there. Andy reached over and flicked one of the light switches off. Leaving it off for a moment before turning it back on.

"Leah, it’s me.” She shouted. Then moved over to the less impossible to break punching bags. Andy was a well trained fighter with enhanced reflexes, she didn’t have super strength.

”…Hey. You can’t sleep either?” She asked.

"No.” Andy laughed. "I, uh, am afraid to sleepwalk again.” She confessed.

”You do that? That’s a thing? Just lock your door.”

"I don’t think that’ll work. Last time I woke up in a different building than I fell asleep in.” With a corpse at her feet. She did not say that part out loud. Opening up could only be taken so far.

Leah put a hand out on the bag to steady it. ”Well… That’s probably a mutant thing. Don’t know how to help with that, but there’s probably someone else who’s had it before.”

"You’re a mutant. Though, I assume you’ve never sleepwalked and woken up in a strange place.”

”Yeah… About that. I don’t know what the fuck I am,” Leah admitted. ”Long story short, your girlfriend stabbed me with a sword once, and that’s how I learned there’s this magic box thing stuck to my spine. She broke it and that turned me into something weird, that apparently eats magic. From somewhere. So…”

Andy blinked. "That’s fucking cool. Weird. But cool. I mean I’m the daughter of an immortal vampire who eats souls for fun. So like I don’t have any room to talk on the weirdness scale.” The cat was out of the bag on that since her chat with Dorian. So she was way more comfortable talking about it. "You know that doll I have, the creepy one. That’s actually my mom.”

It wasn’t cool to her.

”So you don’t just keep that thing around to scare people off? How the fuck do you get from that to a person?”

Andy laughed and shook her head. "Not like that. The doll is a prison. She’s a massive war criminal, and immortal. Can’t kill her. So she gets to live in the doll.” She grinned, "Funny story actually. Dorian and Danni’s dads were involved in putting her there. I’m gonna have so much fun showing up at their door stop soon.”

”Why not just throw the doll into the sun or something? I’ve been learning magic, I’m pretty damn sure I could just teleport that thing directly into the sun.”

"Again immortal. It’d only buy time. She’d come back.” Andy shrugged. "Anyway I came here to get some energy out. Wanna spar?”

Leah shrugged. ”Sure. Let’s do that.” She wasn’t going to get knocked the fuck out again, if she had any say in it.

Andy nodded, she pulled her gloves on a little tighter. They were made for her to fight with, and keep from making skin-to-skin contact on accident. She darted forward, throwing the first punch with little warning. The pair of them were both brawlers and had already agreed. There wasn’t the need for anything else.

Leah caught the punch like it was a foam football. She hadn’t moved the rest of her body yet. ”I wasn’t prepared for you to move that fast last time, I saw it coming now.”

She stepped forward and brought her leg up, swinging it outwards in a forward motion for what was basically a mule kick.

Andy dropped, disappeared under the kick. She had a massive grin on her face. She had missed this. She lashed out one of her legs, using a hand for balance and swung it out at Leah’s for a leg sweep. "Speed isn’t my only quality.”

It was like kicking a street lamp. One of Leah’s legs intentionally gave out just in case Andy happened to be made of glass- Not something Leah thought about, more like a knee jerk reaction from fighting people who weren’t as sturdy as her. She teetered back on the other leg and hauled on Andy’s wrist for balance.

Andy pushed up with the hand she had been balancing on. Letting Leah’s weight work against her. Gravity and her own balance pulling her backwards. Andy now standing kicked up aiming for Leah’s chest, pushing Leah into her unbalanced stance.

Leah brought her hands forward and grabbed Andy’s leg to meet the kick. Either she’d go down and take Andy with her, or they’d still stand.

”Rule one of fighting someone with strength like mine head on: Don’t.”

Andy let gravity rule. Her body going rigid but not fighting the fall. "If I wanted to hurt you, I’d take the gloves off. This is just fun.” She now stood on Leah. She didn’t stay long, tucking into a roll. "You would have loved the Drummonds. The gym. The ring.” Andy’s smile fell a little becoming sad.

Leah rolled backwards, legs going overhead, and pushed herself back up. ”What, a place full of mutants? Ones that can take a punch?” She asked, dropping into a stance that was absolutely not a boxing one.

"Yeah, a whole group of us. It was home. Before.” Andy shifted. Not to match stances, she didn’t know the stance Leah was using. "Before it burned down.” She said and moved again. Andy was looking for the gaps in Leah’s stance. The weaknesses that every fighter had. Even Andy had them. She hadn’t fought in months. Not like the old days.

It was aggressive, she was bent low and had her legs spread further than shoulders apart. Like a snake daring someone to step closer. ”Must’ve been nice having that. How’d that work out? Sounds hard to run a place like that for mutants.”

"It was illegal.” She explained. "Well no law but the people. They were the ones who burned it.” Andy was stepping lightly around Leah. "They had a good cover. Day time it was a normal gym for anyone. Night time, in the basement is where the real fights were.” There. She moved, almost like the lightning that lived in her. Andy’s powers don’t include speed, except for a preternatural response to danger. She was not a spider-person. But Andy had trained for two years in the gym she was talking about. Fought hundreds of fights with as many different power sets. In those fights she never used her lightning because she had always been afraid of stopping someone’s heart again. She wasn’t worried about that here, but she still didn’t use it. Why would she? That would break the spirit of the spar. Skill vs. skill. It hadn’t been laid out, but it was right. The punch she drove in at Leah’s face, with her right fist. Her left fist was only a few seconds behind going for Leah’s gut.

Leah moved forward, in a wide lunge. Her back foot quickly became her front, and she swung her left arm inwards to swipe at Andy with her elbow. Her right hand went up to block the punch aimed at her face, and she just took the one to her stomach. Being the aggressor here was only going to result in Leah getting sideswiped, and she had a suspicion that Andy’s extreme reflexes weren’t going to stack up well if she was forced to commit.

Leah was right. Andy was in motion and couldn’t change it. The elbow dove into her, but her gut punch landed. If she was in a real fight she’d shock Leah at this point. She probably still could. Leah was a tough cookie, and their first fight had been a fluke. Andy knew that. But this wasn’t a fight to knock her out. This was a fight to burn energy. Andy wanted to draw it out. Not end it immediately. Before Leah’s elbow had even fully moved from Andy, she was roundhouse kicking Leah. Her movement from the elbow to the gut flowing, pushing her torso down. She used that movement to add to the force of her kick - at Leah’s head.

Damn, this bitch could punch.

Leah ate that like a damn Christmas dinner. She turned into the kick and tilted her head down. Mostly so Andy would still have two legs after this, but also because she didn’t want Andy to keep the momentum. Her back leg that she’d pushed forward with swept upwards, and Leah went up. It was like an uppercut, only with her knee.

The movement between two well trained fighters can look choreographed. This was one such fight. Andy had only just gained her balance. If it weren’t for her reflexes she would have taken the brunt of the knee to the chin. It was a graze. One that hurt like hell. Andy flipped backwards, hands briefly touching the mat before landing on her feet. Her smile was back.

"Almost cracked some teeth. Next time I’ll wear full gear.” Andy had to wear Leah down. Slow her down. Her punches would never hurt Leah enough to make her tap out. Not unless she laid her out like last time again. Again, that wasn’t what she wanted either.

Andy moved again. This time taking to the air in a jump. The distance, and the fact she had come from a full stop made the flying knee telegraphed. Andy was ready for the response though. Leah’s response would tell her what she needed to do next.

There’s no way she expected that to work, right?

Leah backpedals, so she’d hit the ground before hitting her target. Her hands went up and she got ready for whatever the point of this was. ”Is that it? I’d see that coming from a mile away.”

"Always,” Andy flowed like water, wrapping herself around Leah’s head for a headlock with her legs. However, she forgot one very important aspect about Leah. Her hair. It was basically monofilament. The pain didn’t hit right away. Once it did Andy let go. Blood seeped through the shreds of her pants.

”ShitshithshitshitFUCK-” Leah dropped with her, so there’d be less damage. Leah immediately stopped and backed up. Blood and tattered shreds of fabric slicked down her shoulders. ”Don’t fucking move- Fuck- Sit still.”

Usually, there wasn’t any sort of risk that hair would get pulled and stuck in the wounds, but they weren’t just scrapes. It was like getting a huge abrasion that could expose bone. Andy got lucky, she didn’t just fuck herself over that badly.

"Skin...” Andy gasped. "Don’t touch. She had been in a lot of pain in her life. This probably didn’t take the cake, but it was certainly trying. "Eat you.” She whimpered out.

”You’ll be fine, just don’t move…” Leah was about to try using runes for this, but had an idea. That thing inside her, she and Vicky came to the conclusion there was a lot of energy in there. Magic energy, but magic regardless.

”...Give me your hand. Trust me.” She grabbed Andy’s hand and pulled the glove off quickly. ”Trust me.”

Andy hated this idea. But the blood loss was going to get to her. She didn’t think she had cut any major arteries. There was so much blood. It was hard to tell. Her fingers shook, cold. She nodded. Letting Leah touch her.

Leah grabbed her hand and gripped it. Andy didn’t just get the energy of an ordinary human person, but the energy of something magical. Something born out of a place far, far from Earth. And there was a lot of it. Unlike anything usually seen among humanity.

And it made Leah’s bones feel as if she were on fire. She grit her teeth and shut her eyes. The pain felt familiar. Like she’d felt when Zari had stabbed her.

Her skin started to turn from warm brown to gray.

Life. Delicious. Andy drank. She pulled. It seemed endless. Like back on Genosha. There hadn’t been the unending hunger then like there was now. And she was hungry. Yes, she had had meals with Ardere and the unknown Asgaradian. She hadn’t felt so good though. Leah was like drinking from a cool hose on a hot summer day, a hint of minty flavor for some reason.

God, she wanted to keep drinking and drinking until she was full. Andy saw Leah. Her shape enlarged. Her hand was already so much larger than Andy’s. She blinked. Then yanked her hand back. Her wounds had healed. The bleeding stopped.

The gym was still a mess under her, and the pants would be tossed. Preferably burned.

Leah was heaving with each breath. Her head swam. The floor- It wasn’t that far away a second ago. Moments passed, and by the time Andy was in better condition, fog was starting to fill the air. She looked down at her hands. They were like basalt, not even close to human skin.

”Andy?” She even sounded different. Heavier. More.

"I’m good. You?” Andy panted out. Her heart was still racing. She closed her eyes. "Uh, Leah. Thank you. I...Uh, don’t take this the wrong way, but you taste really good. I almost...I could feel control slipping. But, thank you.” Andy opened her eyes and sat up, scooting a bit away from the blood on the gym mat. She’d clean that up before going to bed.

”I’m… Gonna pretend you didn’t say that.” Leah stood upright, and she was almost seven feet tall now. Her hands were trembling from a mix of pain and fatigue. She looked like someone had just petrified her, or turned her into a statue. And her eyes had turned from brown to orange. The shirt she was wearing got tighter, her sweatpants barely reaching halfway down her calves. Everything stung.

”...What the fuck.”

Andy stood up. Her own body was shaking. Her pants were starting to dry where the blood had soaked through them. She looked up at Leah, taking in all of her changes. "Do you...uh, wanna talk about that?” She gestured to all of Leah. "And yeah. I think I’d appreciate it if you didn’t tell anyone I said that.”

”Andy, I don’t even know what this is,” She rasped. Vapor white as bone trailed out of her lungs. ”The last time this happened, it was in a computer simulation before Usagi got dealt with… I didn’t think this would happen for real.”

"Right. Uh, well. Want me to like take a picture and we can research it? Not that I know where to begin. I’m literally a street rat. I got nothing.”

”I- I mean… Sure? I guess? Victoria and I figured this had something to do with magic. I thought you’d just pull the energy out of that thing- Fuck, I didn’t see this coming.”

Andy grabbed her backpack and pulled out her phone, quickly snapping a photo and then sent it to Leah. "If it’s magic...Maybe that witch from the first day. Agatha?” She suggested.

She took in a deep, deep breath, and let it out. Everything felt wrong. ”She- Yeah. She gave me those runes, Vick said I should come with her to see Agatha. When we leave for the contest.” Her phone felt tiny.

She looked at the picture. It was blurred just ever so slightly, like some pixels just got tossed away here and there. ”That’s not me. Holy fuck. What did he do to me?”

"Hey. We can figure this out. Okay. I’ll help. I don’t know how. But I can try.” She came over to stand near Leah. Her head craned back. "I’d hug you, but I don’t wanna risk it. Even if right now I’m the fullest I’ve been in...ages.” With her gloved hand she reached out to the highest point on Leah’s arm that she could reach and gave her a squeeze. "Trust me when I say we aren’t what we can do. I don’t know who he is. Or anything. But you’re my friend. Right? And that is who you are, what you do, not what you look like. If you look like this, or like before. I don’t care. I’m sure no one else will either.” Andy considered mentioning Mads’ current appearance. No one she knew was giving her shit, but she was struggling with it. "If this sticks...maybe chat with Mads. She’ll understand.”

”I don’t-” Think first, dumbass. ”I don’t know much about demons or where they come from, but I really don’t think that’s the same. Is it? I’m- I don’t know what I am, I thought forever I was just a mutant, then this started happening. Yeah… I’ll talk to her, maybe. I don’t know how long this is going to last, it wasn’t even like this last time.”

"I meant more the transformation thing. She also studied under Agatha a lot right? She might have some leads. I can...” She paused. "I can ask my mom. She’s ancient. She might have an idea.” God she did not want to ask her mom, but for Leah she would.

”What, that doll thing? What would it know?”

"Untold secrets.” She shrugged. "She’s literally as old as humankind.”

”Whatever the fuck I am, it’s definitely not human. But…” She’d take just about anyone’s expert opinion, honestly. ”Sure. I won’t say no, but I’m not gonna make you do anything for me.”

"Let’s try Agatha first. Deals with mom always come with...caveats.”

”She’s in a whole other state right now. I think Victoria was able to get ahold of her, though…” Leah stared down at her hands, as if they’d suddenly look like hers again. ”I’m not going back to the dorms looking like this. For now, if anyone asks, I healed you with runes instead of this. And then you saw me walk back out. Okay?”

"Of course.” Andy nodded, taking a step back so she didn’t have to crane her neck so much. "I’m gonna clean up here. You go ahead and go.”

”Yeah. I’m-” She looked at the door. ”...Yeah. It’s a draw for now, I’m not convinced I won’t just kill you like this. I’m going. Thanks. Sorry.”

"See ya.” Andy said. She let Leah leave and then started cleaning up the drying blood.

Leah turned and stormed out the back exit, into the late evening. She didn’t stop to look if anyone had followed her until she was well into the trees. And then she hung out there, for the rest of the night. Curfew be damned.
