This is where it gets a bit grey. Toun is manufacturing imitations of souls; the bare minimum for these things to operate autonomously. They don't interact with the primordial pool at all. When they die, the power just seeps back to Toun, no disturbance to the balance.
The trick is that the body of a white giant is such that this little control unit could be shunted out by a real soul. The serial number would be a stripped back husk of a real soul's name, and that Reathos could see it at all would be an unplanned feature.

That gives me a thought, though. I think instead of seeing a name above Toun's insentient creations, I reckon it would make sense for there to be a really strange set of numerals that represent a serial number. They would range from one to two-billion for the giants!
I should have predicted this. I make some dolls and everyone starts playing with them!
EDIT: Of course, in order for people to know about the flaw of the white giants, they would need to study how they work first. Toun's not exactly going to announce it.
