In his incognito, ‘civilian’ life, Hassan appears as a man in his late twenties with Middle Eastern features that include smooth brown skin, dark hair, and a sharp, refined face underneath his black glasses, which are Mystic Eye Killers that suppress his Mystic Eyes (see below) to allow him a civilian guise.

Background

The sect that birthed the Assassins still exists today. The Aga Khan, who is also the 49th Imam of that sect, had turned his energies to charity and development, to helping others instead of annihilating the enemies of the sect. Millions were kept from dying through his compassion and his willingness to spend his fortune for their sake, to keep them fed, housed, and educated through tumultuous times.

If not for the sect and its charitable networks, the boy who would become the Hassan of the Shining Eyes, the Hassan who refounded the Order of Assassins, would be dead.

He vaguely remembers the 80s, where he was raised in an orphanage for exiles that also doubled as an orphanage of love. Even then, he knew, from the faces of his fellow orphans, that love and warmth were fragile, that hate and fear found a way, but that love, warmth, and light were worth fighting for.

And so he studied under the masters of the sect, the teachers, philosophers, and theologians. He learned of how God, in their eyes, was beyond limits, beyond definitions, beyond all human conception and intellect. Through his teachers, he revered the Imam, who in turn interceded for God, and he learned that his sect was regarded by many as heretical or even abhorrent, no different than other religions.

He persevered. He studied. Even as the world grew dark again, with strife and poverty tainting large regions of the world, he persisted in his beliefs. In time, he became known as knowledgeable, as wise, but also as someone who struggled against his anger towards those who would target his sect in the name of the same God they praised.

By having a single, high-quality Magic Circuit, born through a random genetic quirk, the young man who would become Hassan of the Shining Eyes was qualified to be taught the basics of Magecraft with the permission of his mentors, many of whom had some knowledge of Mysticism and even Occult Theory, although they kept this secret from the uninitiated. This, however, was merely so he can see the commonalities between Magecraft and what the Ismail’i sect already knew in their hearts.

In time, the Aga Khan, his Imam, gave him a task: Refound the Order of Assassins, both as destroyers of the foes of the faith and defenders of the innocent, the helpless, those who were weak against their own choice, but can one day be strong. But to do that, he would have to sacrifice something of himself, to risk damnation to protect others from the pain and suffering that would tempt them to dark paths.

The then-young man didn’t hesitate; he owed the sect his life. Despite their human imperfections, they tried their best, and he will not fail them. He would sacrifice everything he had: name, rank, property, so that his peers could continue helping others without harassment from those who would shed their blood.

One more thing was asked of him after his declaration: That he sacrifice his mundane sight and the ignorance that came with seeing only the physical.

He did not hesitate.

The process by which he was given the Mystic Eyes of Lie Destruction was painful, risky, but also transcendent, illuminating. At the end of it, he can see the omissions, lies, and half-truths people said to others and themselves, and see his own organization as flawed, with all the sins of a large group led by fallible humans, but still trying to do its best in an imperfect world.

And he learned forgiveness, even for the people he was going to kill.

Personality

The Ismai’li creed does not believe in hate, that the struggle against one’s own vile urges is the greater one, and that the struggle against the enemies of the faith must only use force and violence as a last resort. He is the last resort. Hassan of the Shining Eyes is sent to kill those who are a proven threat, those who have rejected friendship and redemption.

He is an Assassin deliberately selected from those who do not want to kill, so that they may not take pleasure in it. He is an Assassin selected from those who are kind but smart enough to know when death is a mercy. And finally, he is someone who passes judgment because he is bound by his own laws.

What does he wish for, then, if he has no other desire? The answer is that he wants to be a true Heroic Spirit, to uphold his duties till the end of time.

This can be used as a tool of sure, near-instant assassination when confronting those whose lives were based on constantly lying to themselves and others; those people, when confronted with their delusions, would rather kill themselves than live with being wrong and having done wrong, qualifying the Mystic Eyes as a ‘true’ Zabaniya; a technique that inflicts certain death in specific circumstances.

Mystic Eye Killers (Glasses) - Special magical glasses that suppress the effects of one’s own Mystic Eyes, ensuring that Hassan of the Shining Eyes does not kill himself by staring into a mirror.

Mystic Eye Killers (Skull Mask) - A Skull Mask that is also a Mystic Eye Killer and protective headgear made from a Phantasmal Beast’s chitin that makes it extra-tough, especially against Magecraft.

Phantasmal Bodysuit - A bodysuit made from the leather of a Phantasmal Beast, a Wyvern, plus silk from Phantasmal Beast Spiders, making it able to endure bullets, blades, and attacks from Magecraft.
