| PREMISE: |

During the dawn of the early twentieth century a new species of humanoid emerged. These new humans displayed feats previously thought to be impossible to achieve. The 'Hyperhumans' possessed a unique gene, dubbed the 'Hype-Gene' which upon awakening altered the host's DNA to accomendate the body's increased abilities. As scientific knowledge grew, Hyperhumans and Humans were determined to in fact be two separate species, the Hyperhuman being the next step in humanity's evolutionary chain. By 1938, several specimens had been found by obsessive and fanatical scientists who began researching and experimenting on Hyperhumans. This led to Hyperhumans being quarantined and further experimented on, most notably in Germany where Adolf Hitler used the Hyperhuman scare to push his personal agenda forward, most notably using genocide to cover the horendous experiments happening under his orders. Along with numerous others, suspected Hyperhumans were rounded up into concentration camps and subjected to cruel treatments and inhuman experiments.

In 1945, when the Manhatten Project was unleashed upon Japan, an unseen shockwave would soon be felt around the world. The radiation released by the Atom Bomb permeated through the cells of millions around the world irradiated the genetic material of the current generation. This irradiated genetic material lead to the next generation being born with more active 'Hype-Genes' than ever before. These 'jump-started' 'Hype-Genes' resulting in a spike of Hyperhumans across the globe though with a specific concentration in North America. This incident became known as the 'Era of Hyperhumans' spanning nearly four decades from the late 50's to the mid 90's.

However in 1999, all traces of Hyperhumans mysteriously disappeared. Masked heroes and terrifying criminals were gone seemingly over night and the world returned to a state of relative normalcy. For the city of New Lilith, it was highly regarded as a tragedy. During the late 1930's, the city's underworld had been united and taken over by a Roman Locke who quickly crew his criminal empire and enslaved most of the city. However duing the 'Hyperhuman Era' a group of heroes rose up and toppled the crime lord off his lofty throne. These heroes endeavored to improve the world becoming recognized as national heroes but then, they too simply disappeared.

Now the world has moved past the days of heroes with only a few smiling on it fondly while most are glad to be done with the 'madness'. There are those however who wish to bring the Hyperhumans back, and will stop at nothing in order to replicate the original effects.

PRIMARY PLOT:

Change is in the air. With a new term at New Lilith College Academy right around the corner, many students are gearing up to head back to school while crime seems to be on a steady increase for the first time since the end of the Hyperhuman Era. Meanwhile, a local chemical plant has increased its security recently, enlisting a full escort for a larger tanker truck.

SUB-PLOTS:

Vagabonds and destitutes have been disappearing from the streets with little to no attention from the media. Concern is rising in the Shallows, especially with no one taking an interest in their protection.

NEW LILITH:

The city of New Lilith is named after a small European settlement by the name of Lilith. The first Lilith was originally a small castle town that was home to a cult of extremists somewhere in Eastern Europe. This cult was most active between the 12th and 16th century. However they were driven from their home during the crusades. The leaders of the cult were pushed into hiding for the next few centuries and eventually the current leaders stole away on a ship to the New World. They founded the settlement of New Lilith along the Eastern Coast in a valley located in the shadow of the Appalachian Mountains. This would later become part of the State of New Hampshire. As the cult became more well known amongst the natives there, the valley became known as the Valley of the Demon, specifically due to the Cult's tendency to worship the demon Lilith and bring sacrifice to her. Over time however the cult began to die out and as the population became a mix of Native, English and French, the Cult of Lilith was forgotten about and the settlement of New Lilith continued to grow.

Skip forward to current day. New Lilith is a thriving city, and was at one point notoriously corrupt and crime ridden. However the city was ushered into a new era with the arrival of the Mavericks and their removal of Roman Locke from his lofty throne atop a massive criminal empire. The architecture of the city is primarily gothic influenced to mimic the historical aspect of the city and at one time was an attempt to bring tourists to the city. Due to the location of the city, it's prone to heavy layers of fog as well as the sun seemingly setting early. This effect is achieved due to the fact that the mountains block the sun as it passes overhead thus after the sun reaches its peak in the sky it seems to set as it fades to the west behind the mountains. This allows the fog off the sea to hang about the city much longer. Thus granting the illusion of darkness and the perfect shroud for criminals to act in. Aside from by sea or air, there is really one one main highway into New Lilith, though there are several mountain roads that lead away from the city.

The city is also prone to rain as it's primary weather condition due to the high amount of humidity in the air due to the sea and fog. Sunny days are a rarity, weeks of sun even more bizarre. The city has in the past been trashed by large tidal waves, and some of the dock areas flooded. There are now measures in place to ensure this is at least mostly prevented. New Lilith's primary export at one time had been the fisheries, but this has slowed down in modern times. Now the city is funded by the sale of hydro electricity which comes from two giant dams on either end of the city. Using the ocean rivers that rush down from the mountains, the constant waves and the tide, the city is endlessly able to create new electricity.

Nearby cities include Salem to the west and Exeter to the North as well as many other towns and villages in Rockingham County. Due to it's location in New Hampshire, there are several States within an easy driving distance as well as the Canadian Border. The Population of New Lilith is approximately 602,844 not including the rural areas in the mountainous range around the city. The Faulkner Estate is one such example of a dwelling outside of the city.

The Shallows: The Shallows were a neighborhood which was even more overshadowed by the rocky cliffs that surrounded the city than any other area. The houses here very rarely were built taller than a single story due to the low income in the area. The property in the Shallows were marked down considerably lower due to the overwhelming amount of shadows and low sunlight. In addition to this, the Shallows were set on the outer edge of the city against an ancient oozing bog. This swamp was a favourite of the local crime families due to the thick peat moss which sucked anything that stepped into the bog down under it's surface never to be seen again. This made the swamp a particular preference for body dumping, thus leading to the name 'Dead Man's Bog.' If one of the gangs brought someone out to the bog, it was likely a one way trip.

New Lilith College Academy: The New Lilith College Academy is the largest secondary school in New Lilith. Besides the NLCA there's the Catholic school, Our Lady Peace Vocational Institute and the highschool in the low-lands, Bayside Secondary School. The name comes from the fact that the school is built outside of the city near the coastal regions of New Lilith. Home to a variety of home teams as well as numerous college preparation programs that go well beyond the usual high school curriculum, the NLCA comes highly recommended across the United States and usually will bump a student to a top priority in College enrollment.

1. In Character Rules

1. IN CHARACTER RULES:

[1.01]You are your character, so act like them. Create or portray their mannerisms, powers, and ideals to how they have been established in the game. BE the character, not just yourself with the character's powers. The notes section of your CS has been provided for such a reason, use it to help yourself remain consistent in character portrayals.

[1.02] Writing expectations for this roleplay are at least a two (2) paragraph minimum per post. Three (3) to five (5) paragraph posts however would be awesome so long as you're not simply chewing the scenery. Proper spelling and grammar is also expected but small mistakes here and there are understandable. Blatant offenses will be called out.

[1.03] You are encouraged to post at least once per week. If there are any outside factors as to why you aren't able to post, please let the GMs know. If you find yourself in a plot with another player and they disappear, do your best to move on without them and quickly finish the arc to the best of your ability, or ask for the help of a GM. If you stop posting for two (2) weeks without a message in the OOC, your character will be listed as 'inactive', and after a further week of inactivity, your characters will be expelled, and dealt with as necessary in the IC, whether killed or used as needed and then discarded. Please if you know you’re going to be absent or simply have lost interest in the RP, just let the GM know.

[1.04] No God-Modding or metagaming. This refers to controlling or manipulating another player's character in way that is completely self-beneficial and not pre-approved by the other player. This also includes being untouchable against NPC characters as well as being all knowing. Keep your character humanized or risk being expelled from the RP.

[1.05] PC's are not to be killed without permission. Nameless NPC's are fine, but PC's or important NPC's will require authorization by their creator.

[1.06] This is a Character Driven RP, and as such you are encouraged and expected to take charge of your character's sub-plots and storylines. That said, there will be a heavy emphasis on collaborative activities and team building as well. The GMs will be leading the RP in the traditional sense with a driving plot and will ensure the RP keeps moving however we do want to see you develop your characters and produce your own plots. However we don't want to see you lock your character out of interaction and focus solely on your character and their 'world'. No one enjoys watching you play with yourself, it's always better to let someone else join in on the fun.

[1.07] Absolutely no 'OOC' chatter in the In Character Thread. If you have a question or anything to explain there is an Out Of Character Thread provided. You have no excuse to make an 'OOC' comment in the IC and if done it will be heavily frowned upon.

[1.08] Plots should not be completed in one or two posts. Your character should not be able to stop an entire robbery by themselves or put out a city block on fire with relative ease. That said obviously different power levels do apply so if you do manage to put out the fire, solve the cause of it. If you stop the robbery find out who hired the gang or what their motives were. If all else fails do some character development or show us some ‘Slice of Life’ moments for you character if you do solve a plot quickly.

[2.01] Respect the Game Masters. The GM's words are to be adhered, don't argue or disregard them unnecessarily. If a GM asks you to stop doing something please do it. Likewise if a GM asks you to change something in your post please do it. Failure to adhere to any GM or Moderator requests will result in expulsion from the game.

[2.02] Respect the other players. Constructive criticism is fine, but flaming or trying to run players off just because you don't like the way they do things is not okay. Remember, it's the GM's job, not yours, to point out if there's a problem. If you feel that there is a problem, then contact a GM directly.

[2.03] Likewise any quarrels will be dealt with by the GMs. Don't take them out in the OOC, arguments should be dealt with between the two parties through private messaging. If the involved parties truly can't solve their issues a GM can act as an arbiter upon request.

[2.04] No GIF Wars. This is a thread for discussion of the roleplay, its characters and plots. This is not a Spam Thread. Chat is allowed and encouraged but within reason, please try not to fill the OOC with numerous pages that have little to nothing to do with the roleplay itself. An active OOC generally means an active roleplay so feel free to chat up your fellow players about characters and events in the RP.

3. CHARACTER CREATION RULES:

[3.01] You can create any superhuman mold you want with tact. All invincible superhumans or obvious imitations of DC or Marvel titles will be judged harshly. If you must make a 'monstrous' character/power, I advise you to make your character dual sided so they may blend with the regular people. Your abilities should also be a secret to anyone outside of the character’s circle of trust, remember people are afraid of what they don't understand and superpowers are a new concept to the world. People will not be willing to accept them very quickly.

[3.02] In line with above rule, do not make your character well rounded, give them weaknesses and flaws. Limitations in their skills and abilities, reasons to make them need a team to support them. Additionally, give your character room to grow and develop. It's always fun to have a new power show up down the line, just give the GM a heads up first so it doesn't look like you're godmodding.

[3.03] Character sheets will not be accepted until the GMs have had time to look over the CS thoroughly. This not only ensures that we the GMs have time to read through Character Sheets appropriately but also that you the Player are receiving proper critique as well as a solid community to interact with in the In Character Threads. We appreciate your patience with this.

[3.04] All Character Sheets must be submitted to the GMs in the provided or similarly laid out format. Character Sheets which do not use an organized skeleton will be rejected and asked to comply with a standard. Displays of impatience towards acceptance will result in an immediate denial. The GMs have lives outside of RPG and may have their time restricted during the week and/or weekend. Have patience and a positive attitude and you will receive a response.

[3.05] It should be noted that backstories are not part of the CS. This is because I want to encourage player interaction in the IC. Players will actually require their characters to talk to each other in order to learn about them. That said, while you are free to discuss the IC and drop hints in the OOC, I ask that you refrain from downright telling us everything about your character. While a backstory is not required, nor permitted, it is asked that for the sake of the planned plot you aim to have a younger character between the ages of 14 to 19.

[3.06] Character Sheets are not to include any sort of reference image. This means no anime, illustrated or photographic depiction of any sort should be visible on your CS. Your character's depiction should be established by your IC posts as an author does in a novel. If you absolutely have, you may include a hyperlink to an image in your notes, however I must ask that it not be anyone of note or an anime/manga image.

[3.07] Character Sheets are to be posted in the OOC Thread for review and once accepted posted in the Character Thread. At the end of your sheet, please write your favourite beverage. Failure to comply with these rules will delay your acceptance as you obviously did not read through the rules and therefore can not be trusted to adhere to those laid out for the OOC and IC threads. Additionally, do not announce this rule or hint towards it within the OOC. If someone can't read the rules for themselves, they likely can't read the IC and we don't want their kind here.

This is an open world RP and I realize that relationships are a part of this. While I have no problem with this I do want it kept a specific way to avoid breaking any rules. As part of RPG's rule, mature content is forbidden on the forums. You may however use the standard fade-to-black technique if you desire and that will be fine, just keep it PG-13/14A (May contain: violence, coarse language and/or sexually suggestive scenes.) both leading and following up. I implore you to keep within the age restrictions set up already by administration. As such, let’s keep it simple, ages 14-17 can have relationships with each other and likewise for 18-22. Obviously there's some grey area in there and I'd understand 16-18 should also be a range but please just use your common sense if you're going to seek a relationship within the RP. You have been warned of my expectations on this matter and should you fail to follow through you will be asked to leave the roleplay and reported for breaking site rules.

Commitment And Consistency:

COMMITMENT AND CONSISTENCY:

If you join this RP, if you take the time to submit an application, I'm putting my faith in you that you'll be committed to it and that the character you play will be consistent with the one in the agreed upon CS. Personally, I have a hard time with this sometimes and I understand that things just happen. That said I’m referring to suddenly giving a character new powers with no explanation or completely changing their backstory in order to add new skills. I’m okay with changes but I’d like a heads-up first so perhaps we can work a more natural way towards these things happening. In terms of commitment, dropping out of the RP randomly for whatever reason is a pain or a GM. Simply put, it wastes my time along with the other players. If you do not think you can join and you're sure something will come up, do not join. Tendency to not care about an RP after a while? Don't join. Simple as that. I will work with you when it comes to bumps in the road. If you think you're going to be out for a couple of days, that's fine. I'll find a way to excuse you from the story or play your character. However, please let the group known as far in advance as possible. If you're going on a trip, tell me something. Do not leave me wondering where you are. Let me know so I can keep things going. I will work around you if you work with me when you can.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an original universe superhero RP?

Yes it is.

Can I make an original character?

Yes you may.

How many players are you looking for?

My original intention is to have an always open RP keeping in mind that players tend to come and go. That said if at any one time, the player counts gets over 20 I will temporarily close acceptances until I have inactive players to remove from the roster. Ideally however, I'm looking for a close knit group that can work together and maybe even form something of a team in the IC.​

What kind of powers am I allowed to use?

Ideally powers that are simple and give your character room to grow and evolve. As your characters won't start the game with their abilities, it would be best to choose a simple ability you like (IE Superhuman Strength) and then throughout the course of the RP level up your abilities, preferably at a pace of one per arc or two. This way our characters can start at a street level and have a natural progression. Think of the RP as their origin story, even Superman had to learn all of his various abilities at one time.

Can my character use magic, be a vampire/werewolf/god/alien etc?

No. The characters for this RP are all to be humans who were infected by a mysterious gas. A regular human using gadgets or tech is allowed but superpowers should come from being a result of the accident.

Can I have more than one character?

It is requested that you start with one character and make several posts before creating another. That said the answer is yes just not immediately.​

Can my character be bad/evil?

As VIGILANCE provides an open world environment, your character may be of whatever alignment that you wish. That said, if you plan to wreak havoc upon the city, you will need to submit a plot to a GM for approval first. If you simply wish to rob a store you may go ahead or if you wish to team up with another evil character’s plot then you need to ask the player in charge of it. Likewise good players are free to roam the city and stop petty crime but if you wish to stop a crime ring you need to submit a plot or join a plot that otherwise satisfies your needs.​

Can my secondary character be evil?

See above point.

What's the plot going to be like?

There is going to be multiple plots at all time. The GM will provide the primary overarching plot which will firstly follow recovering the city before working into a much larger plot. However there will be numerous secondary plots going on at all time. To begin with the GM has provided a couple however after the first ‘chapter’, secondary plots will be able to be player submitted. If a player submitted plot is approved it will be posted in that section detailing how many players the submitter is looking for a general summary of that plot. These plots will be able to range in variety as they are up to you the player to design. Players are also encouraged to have personal character plots to follow in order to develop their characters. While you don't have to always participate in subplots every 'chapter' it is encouraged that you intertwine your personal plot with these subplots and the main plot in order to involve yourself with other players. Even expand your personal plot to a subplot submission to involve other players for an arc or two.
