Bio

Very well, where do I begin?

My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet.

My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament.

My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard, really. At the age of twelve, I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles.

There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking. I highly suggest you try it.

Kinda curious about these issues. World of Heroes is one of the games I never read the archives of.

Long story short, JRK was a massive fan of The Dark Knight Returns (so am I, not judging) and unironically loved All-Star Batman & Robin. But to a problematic degree. Half of the time, he wrote Batman as he should be, with the whole no guns and no killing rule and a general sense of heroism. And then half of the time he'd pull random Miller-esque shit that felt incredibly out of place, to the point that a couple of our veteran players had to call him out for having Bruce kneecap a motherfucker with a gun in one of the middle seasons out of nowhere. And this wasn't an Ultimate game, this was meant to be a game where it went off of the current comics at the time. His Batman just had weird Millerism tourettes, almost.

But, even so, he didn't need a dude hanging around him all of the time making half-jokes about how if he slipped up even once, his character would be pounced on. And I should say that despite all of these issues, I still quite enjoyed his writing with the character most of the time. He was a good Batman for the game when he was on point. I was just a jealous little bitch who wanted to usurp him in what I considered the "official" Hype DC game.
Can we devolve the thread into Dick Grayson jokes now?

I think Titans has us covered for any potential Dick Grayson jokes in the foreseeable future.

I played Batman for a single post? Or was it just an application? Or all a fever dream? I just remember stepping in (or wanting to step in) because MB finally stepped down, and I knew there'd be no other chance.

And sure enough, there hasn't been...

But yeah, no, I've gotten that plenty of times over the years. I am a complete Bat-hog in any game I participate.

And then I took over for you and you nitpicked the shit out of it....

Yeah. I... did that, too. To say that I was a massive dickhole whenever it came to Batman at the time is a massive understatement. I had my issues with how JRK portrayed Bruce, but looking back on it, I shudder at my borderline harassment behavior. I wish the dude was still around so that I could've made amends before the games tanked.

Thankfully, I'm marginally less of a dickhole about Batman (and in general) now.
That's a lot of bitches.

And you know what they say about them.*

So...

When did everyone start rping, where and who was your first character? Mine was on a browser game that also had forum rp going on. I was a Jaffa called Tul'ak I think his name was

I started off on Superhero Hype in 2003 as a member, then joined the game "World Of Heroes: The DC Universe RPG" as Nightwing in it's second season. I was 13 or 14 at the time. Then around 2008, I played Batman for the first time by... starting my own game with the very first Ultimate DC game after lobbying hard to play Batman in World Of Heroes, much to the chagrin of the player who actually played him. My first run wasn't very good at all, so when UDC rebooted a few years later, I really made the character my own. Then, years later, when that player disappeared and Batman became vacant in World Of Heroes, I got my shot and immediately blew it by being a lazy piece of shit.

So, lesson learned. If you think you want something and obsess over it too long, maybe try sticking with what you've got instead. Because you might just screw up what you originally wanted all along, if given the chance.

I was originally going to go by my first name but someone else, a mod of all people, had taken it. So through a convoluted chain of circumstance, I became the Byrd Man despite not actually having Byrd as a last name, nor really knowing anyone with that last name.

And unfortunately, I don't think The Hype let you use more than a few set of characters for names, because I long for the alternate reality where we all got to know you as Dark Master Matt.

I've taken to going by Webhead on other sites/services, so probably that. If not, then... I don't know. I've always sucked at usernames.

Same. My first ever username on the Hype was... and I can't believe I'm about to say this... BW/BM. As in "Bruce Wayne/Bat Man".

God, my secret shame revealed.
And as far as Venom goes, I think I'm gonna be the odd man out on this one. Not with the movie, which looks disappointingly terrible and a throwback to that awful Josh Trank Fant4stic film from a couple years ago, but with the character himself. I actually enjoy Venom whenever Brock is the one behind the wheel, especially when you get past the horror element that Todd MacFarlane intended with him and treat him as almost this annoying jock-lite big brother to Spider-Man that would sooner give Parker a swirlie than attempt to eat his brains. Venom as a villain never really made sense after his initial arc, but as Peter's reluctantly called upon ally? He's gold.

Of course, that opinion is weighed in a bit of bias for the PS1 Spider-Man game and the original 90's cartoon, where that version of Venom really shined. But as far as the comics go, it's also important to remember that Eddie really hasn't been Venom for quite a long time. The big overused monster versions have generally been successors, like Mac Gargan. Mindless, dull versions of the character with nothing to offer. Agent Venom was a nice change of pace and I really loved what that did for Flash Thompson's character, but I admit that it's nice for me to know that Brock is back.

Now, does that mean that I'm one of those people who thinks Venom is one of the coolest Spider-Man villains ever? Fuck no. My favorites are the classic rogues like Doc Ock, The Goblin, and Mysterio. But as a rough Bizarro stand-in that every superhero practically needs, he serves his purpose.

This film, of course, negates any of that by pretending as if Venom is interesting by himself. It reminds me of the bafflingly in-production Joker origin movie that isn't going to feature Batman. Who the fuck is that even for?
And I wish my younger self didn't sip the Spider-Man 3 hype Kool-Aid because I've forever tied my online persona to a character I've more or less outgrown. C'est la vie.

This confession does make me wonder, if given the chance to alter things, what would your current username be? I admit that I kind of struck gold whenever "Master Bruce" wss suggested to me in the early Hype days, but this What If? sort of thing fascinates me.
