I mean, we have a lot of unconventional week one-rs, expediating Wonder Woman or Aquaman doesn't seem so crazy in contrast.

I think if I get a feel for my writing, a second application for someone more cosmic or extranormal than street level would keep me balanced, but who can say.
I enjoyed them. A lot going on, but good.

Animation was a bit stiff, but I liked pretty much everything else on a decent level.
Finally got around to the Crisis movies DC Animation put out. Decent.

O R I G I N S:

The story of Marc Spector is a simple one.

Idiot kid endeavors to become something more than himself and joins the greatest institution for world peace, or so he was told. In the military arm of the United States he becomes a weapon for his country but loses his soul along the way and it ends up with him being shot in the back in the middle of the desert by someone he thought he trusted. An ancient entity that resembles the moon god of Khonsu resurrects him and molds his mind into a weapon of vengeance and a prophet of order. It splinters his brain into five million pieces. He survives the desert, but when he comes home to New York City things are not quite the same.

With his new responsibilities and a brain that is tooling between madness and virtue he does the only thing he has ever know how to do: fight for those who cannot.

S A M P L E P O S T:

New York City.

It is a cancer, an irreversible rot of corruption, decay, and hopelessness. It’s also a beacon of hope, industry, and progress. It is like the crescent moon, both bright and swallowed in the coldness of the dusk. It is my home. It is my domain.

“You’ve been drinking too much again.”

Marlene’s voice is stern. Annoyed. She signed up for crazy, but not for stupid.

I can’t help but think she’s right, but for me it all helps. Khonshu has damned me with bleak, indiscerptible visions that point toward what must be done. Downing a few bottles of vodka is peace of mind.

“Can’t be helped. Makes the visions clearer.”

“Better or easier?”

“Yeah.”

A quick conciliation. Alcohol doesn’t make the visions easier to understand, it makes them easier to cope with. My brain is already twisted and broken, there’s nothing the alcohol will do that’s worse than cosmic magic or processing the tongue of a being that’s beyond human comprehension and wills.

“I will try.”

“To?”

“Go easier with it.”

She sighs before clasping the two bottles in front of her and tossing them in the bin next to her. “Marc… you’ve got to keep a clear head or you’ll make a mistake and–”

“Khonshu might not bail me out again. I know.”

I have an idea.
I'll take a look. Looks like you guys have a good foundation. Haven't written in a year and my life is in the toilet, so I'll see what I can do before I finalize a concept. Just glad y'all are still doing these.
I appreciate all of the interest from the invited parties. I will try to read them ASAP, but life is a lot busier in my 30s than it was in my 20s.

“Should we tell them?”

There was a quiet unease that could be felt in the server room, a long pause emanating between the towering shadows of the computer servers and the administrators who had been sent in to investigate the anomalies in the system—anomalies that would have far-reaching consequences that the company at large was not prepared for. In short, the company that provided a unique virtual reality experience for the general public for a whole year without any major issues had suddenly run into an error that could’ve brought attention to them in the form of litigation and financial ruin. This concern being that the players that were currently logged into Pariah Online were at serious risk in that the integrity of their safety had been compromised; compromised to the point of actual risk of death beyond the simulation.

It was every virtual reality designer’s worst nightmare.

“They deserve to know.”

The other administrator looked to his ‘partner’, a scowl forming on his lips. “Do you want to cause a panic?”

The idea to inform the active playerbase that they could lose their lives if they perished in the game was a double-edged sword; but really, both administrators knew that even if they didn’t tell them they would find out as soon as their healing wards no longer worked on reviving their comrades. It was the kind of scenario that was a legitimate horror movie to the people inside the company and those who had invested into the innovative experiment in the first place. Pariah couldn’t fail—too much money had been put into it and not enough money had been made off it. If the efforts of the administrative team failed to locate an issue and solve it, both of the two people in the server room knew it would be them, not the board, who would be the fall guy for the colossal breach in public safety and trust. It would be them who would be offered up to the proverbial guillotine.

Maybe even the actual guillotine.

“We’re going to have a panic if we don’t.”

There was another pause.

“I am aware.”

The older Japanese man sighed as he went over the data again. He’d have to compose a proper message and have one of the attendants carry it out. But what kind of words wouldn’t result in the game world being at risk? If he said the wrong thing people would die. If he didn’t say anything at all? Well, it would be almost as bad. They didn’t train you for these kind of perils, but he supposed that was the problem with building a game around the technology they had gotten their hands on. He still didn’t completely understand it. Only the creator of the technology did and he had disappeared months ago; a disappearance that made him wonder if it was connected to the glitch infecting the system. But what reason could Toshiro Mizushima have to destroy his life's work?

It was a question he would have to ponder at a later date, at least.

He just hoped that the gamers inside the virtual world would be able to survive long enough for there to be a plan in place...

For most of Pariah’s denizens the City of Thorinn was one of the last of the major cities in the known kingdom, sitting on the edge of Thoros, the spiraling riverbed that made up the natural border between the unknown and civilization. Sitting as one of the several outposts that persisted on the edge of the nation that every man, woman, and child called home: The Kingdom of Aetheria. That said, despite Thorinn’s stature and status it wasn’t truthfully a place anyone could call small. That much was supported by the census office and their citation claiming that the city held an estimated population of one hundred and eighty thousand denizens in total.

But despite Thorinn’s capaciousness it did not afford it the absolute safety from the threats of the world at large outside of a comfortable shelter from the stray monster and usual collection of nomadic raiders and bandits. The city would most certainly have a challenging time defending itself had an abyssal or colossal creature made a venture out of destroying the city. And if a dungeon erupted from the earth nearby? The city would’ve needed dire help in that case. And as much as the residents of the kingdom didn’t like relying on the strangers from beyond the veil, those wayfarers, drifters, and outsiders had been the only ones to be able to stop the phenomena that had begun only a few months before their much needed appearance some time ago.

It would be fitting that in only a few days the people of Thorinn would realize this when a structure appeared nearby, standing suddenly in the forests that overlooked the city itself like a threatening beacon and declaration of war. It wouldn’t take long for monsters to start appearing. It would be up to the good will of the outsiders and the city’s Guild of Acquisitions to save them from a potential horde.

They had no other choice.

Rikako, empress of the Moriyama business empire, loved flowers and butterflies. So it came as no surprise that her two twin daughters were named as such: the elder, Hanako; and the younger, Chou. The two were borderline inseparable through their younger years, all the way up through private high school, which is when Hanako began to struggle.

While her sister blossomed, Hanako wilted. Chou never noticed her sister’s struggles and the elder twin couldn’t help but feel a resentment building in her stomach. She didn’t hate her sister, but it was hard for her to reconcile her teenage angst. Chou was good at pretty much everything, everyone liked being around her, and while the two were equally as academically accomplished it always seemed to be the younger twin who got all of the praise. Their parents were harsh with Hanako, but with Chou they were soft and accommodating.

It didn’t seem fair.

Her high school life didn’t help ease the burden. She tried out for multiple clubs and never got anywhere with them. The stress of the expectations her parents put on her made her feel awkward and distant. Eventually, she just focused entirely on her studies. No love letters from a boy who sat behind her in class, no sports accolades, nothing interesting to make her stand out; in the end, she just existed in the school ecosystem. The only time people wanted to talk to her was to ask her about Chou. By her final year in high school she had completely isolated herself; when she was home she was either studying, drawing, playing video games, or reading manga. She felt alone and incompetent. A loser.

Her parents thought so, too. Acing the entrance exam to Tokyo U wasn’t impressive to them because that was what was expected of her, of anyone bearing the name of Moriyama. She still tried her best to earn the affection of both her parents, but she never got a single inch no matter how hard she tried. When they allowed her sister to abstain from going to university? That’s when her years of resentment turned into bitter hatred.

If she hadn’t found Pariah Online she probably wouldn’t have lasted much longer. It saved her.

In Pariah Online, Hanako found a new life as “Rael”, the personification of everything the young girl from Tokyo wanted to be.

The Demon Fox.

Coined through her actions in the early days of Pariah Online, Rael clawed out a reputation for being particularly unhinged. She was unrecognizable to her true self: confident, unscrupulous, violent, bold, and with a meanstreak that could spin the globe of Aetheria twiceover.

Whilst this tumultuous reputation gave Rael a black mark of sorts, she still found a begrudging respect from her wayfaring peers. A skilled dungeoneer with a solid mastery over her magic, if Rael was joining up with your group, you had little to worry about outside of the fact that she wasn’t going to be sharing much of the items she had her eyes on.

“Everyone has to make a living, right?”

With connections to Malacius Secre, Rael has worked for a good length of time as a collector of magical antiquities. Where other wayfarers succumb to honest work like crafting goods and weapons, the Draethir-bound wayfarer has opted for more dubious means. Artifacts found in the dungeons are invaluable to the denizens of Aetheria and she is more than happy to deal them for a high price. If you have a quest that needs the item she’s scalping, she’ll happily sell it back to you for double the rate she was offered for it. If that doesn’t make you happy? Well, that’s not her problem, now is it?

When Mystic Prophecy put up a request for anyone in Thorinn to help them with a dungeon, the opportunity became fairly obvious to her. Having no interest to ‘join’ the famed group herself, her goal is to just take her cut and look good while doing it. She isn’t privy to making friends, but she knows soloing a dungeon is impossible for even the top players.

She wasn’t expecting what was about to happen…

Breaker of Storms
Rael often finds herself at the eye of the storm. Effective with the primordial element of lightning, Rael has unlocked advanced spells when utilizing it with her weapon of choice. This includes access to agility buffs, weapon-casted storm bolts, and a shockwave of sound reminiscent of thunder itself. She is also resistant to lightning spells as a result.

Papiyon (Chou Moriyama)
Rael’s relationship with her sister is… complicated. They’ve never cooperated in the game outright, but there are years of resentment that she’s never really sorted out. There will be moments where Rael will be strangely on Papiyon’s side as much as there would be moments of icy, almost cruel disdain. Should Papiyon recognize her sister then they could get the therapy they need, or the kind they don’t.
