Our guests have gone home and the kitchen was easy to clean. The house is spotless and the baby is sleeping. Life is good.

AI is awful and I hate it but forums have been slowing down a lot longer than that. I think it's because the forum generation has just grown up and gotten new priorities (jobs, families, etc).

@RoccanIronclad I have a proposition!

What if, to get everyone together later on, we have an event on the full moon? Maybe the local Lycanthrope Society organizes an event for one of the full moons in the summer (is it summer?) called the Midnight Howl or something, where werewolves and non-shifters alike can get together (maybe in a clearing near the woods) for a fun afternoon/evening of music, food and general merriment until the full moon rises and the werewolves have their mandatory shift and take off into the woods.

I think it would be a fun way to get people together and talking, and learning about each other! Not to mention that it sounds like something people would totally do in a city full of mythical creatures. Like those cultural societies who host events.

Thoughts anyone?
The basis for all of this is that Gems have elemental magic. They are born with an elemental affinity and it is intrinsically part of them, whether they like it or not. Therefore, it follows that the element would affect them in some way.

What I am not including is actual, real-life shit. Science is a good starting point, but at the end of the day, this is fantasy. I'm not writing an anthropological dissertation on the societal interpretations of ethnic traits.

The basic idea is this: It's more common for your personality to associate with your element than not. This does not rule out exceptions, but it also doesn't mean those exceptions are considered normal.

Now, there are two factors that cause this: genetic affinity and societal influence. (No, I am not going to debate nature vs. nurture with you. That's still hotly debated by people with much more education than I)

Genetic affinity is the fact that Gems are born with an element. Unlike the Drakken, whose elements don't really affect them (for lore reasons I'm not getting into in this explanation), Gems are much more tuned to their elements by nature (hence their increase in control). This means that, more often than not, some of the vague traits of that element will seep into the Gem. For example, Fire gems tend to be more reactive and Water gems tend to be more calm. These do not so much affect specific personality traits as they do general disposition.

Then there's societal influence. The Gems (due to that aforementioned disposition link) associate certain values and traits with certain elements, and this is where it becomes more of a cultural thing than directly elemental. Water Gems as a group hold such values as wisdom, temperance, and persistence (and to an extent, forethought and memory) in high regard. Likewise Earth gems tend to value solidarity, loyalty, empathy, and compassion. Fire gems could appreciate resolve, action, confidence, etc., and Air gems things like flexibility, innovation, freedom of expression, adventurous-ness etc. Definitely not an exhaustive list but you get the idea. In any case, when you're raised with certain sets of morals and ideals (and role models who embody them), you come to value and appreciate them, which in turn affects how you think and act. (This is where you can get some cool cultural variations between Gems raised in mono-elemental villages and mixed-elemental cities)

Of course, there are always outliers. It's entirely possible to get an airheaded water gem with a quick temper, but they would probably get looked at funny by others of their community and feel as if they don't really fit in. They may feel disconnected from their element. The level of affinity one feels for their element may vary too - perhaps a fire gem feels connected to fire and feels the disposition pull, but is still shy.

Now, this doesn't mean that the elemental affinities aren't common. It would be uncommon to find a gem like the water one above, but of course it could happen. This is why the elemental affinity thing isn't really a stereotype; it has more truth and substance to it than a stereotype. It's more of a very general average - it would be more common to find a gem that mostly fits their element than one who clearly does not. Kind of like how Caucasian people tend to be medium-height. It's not a stereotype because it's true for a large portion of the population, but you still get some very short and very tall Caucasians.

Or rather... Bree's butt?
@darkwolf687 Go ahead and put Zak in the character tab ^^
Sierra Tikaavik

The stranger was kind her as she wrestled with the oversized straps of her bag, and as he spoke Sierra lifted her eyes to look at him for the first time.

He was taller than her, but didn't tower over her the way her father and cousins had. He was slim and dressed all in black, which only served to emphasize the paleness of his skin. Sierra looked at him unabashedly, examining the scars that decorated his flesh like veins through white marble. Her gaze likely lingered longer than potentially appropriate, but she had always taken an interest in scars. As her father had told her, they were stories written in the skin.

Something drew her to him, but she couldn't place what. It vaguely reminded her of the time she saw a hiker near her home; strange, yet she remained. In fact, she couldn't pull away.

He apologized profusely for being in her way (though she knew it had been her own fault for being careless) and went on to offer to help her, gesturing to take her bag. Instinctively, Sierra gripped it tighter. She hesitated for a second, and he kept on going. Sierra didn't really know what to do; words just, kept coming. Another key difference from home, she noted.

Finally, the stranger pointed out her bare feet, overflowing with words of concern. Sierra's eyes widened, and for a moment she was devastated. "Oh, dammit!" she exclaimed, throwing her bag back to the ground and falling to her knees to look through it. "I'm such an idiot sometimes, I swear!"

Inwardly, she cursed herself. Of course these people expected shoes. She remembered the time during a pack run, when she stepped on a broken bottle left behind by some careless hiker. The glass had left a jagged scar on the bottom of her foot, and her cousin Leah had been thoroughly chastised for not keeping a better eye on the trail. Of course the cities of the humans and the... well, the others, would be full of such dangers.

Hastily, she pulled on a pair of well-worn suede moccasins, produced from her bag. She could feel her face flushing, and she hurried to her feet. "Well done Sierra, right?" she chuckled bashfully, to no one in particular. She had heard and said the phrase so many times it practically fell out of her mouth.

The attractive stranger apparently tried to stem the flow of words with his knuckle after introducing himself as Alder. Sierra instantly liked the name; her father had told her how Alder trees nourished the plants around them, and provided a home to fish in their roots. From the way he talked, it seemed the name suited him.

Sierra blinked, expecting Alder to say more. When he didn't, she snapped out of her distracted reverie and replied, "Yeah, I'm new here. New to everywhere, really. I don't really-"

Just then, the breeze shifted to blow in her face, and Sierra froze. In all the confusion she hadn't been paying much attention to smells, but this she couldn't ignore. A strong scent (at least, strong to her) wafted off of Alder, and Sierra absently took a long breath to catch it. He smelled a little like the human she'd met those years ago, but it was marred by something. It took a second for her to place it, but once she did, it was unmistakable.

He smelled of death, but oddly, not of rot. Sort of like a dead creature frozen in the snow before it could start to break down. There were other scents too, nicer ones, but her mind wouldn't budge from the absurd idea that she was somehow talking to a corpse.

"Are you...?"

Before she could finish her thought, another tall man, this an odd looking one with greyish skin who smelled of age, interrupted.

"Ex-excuse me sir, mam. If I may, umm, be so bold. Are you of pure blood?"

The stranger looked to Alder, and Sierra furrowed her brow. What on earth was he talking about?

@Obscene Symphony If you're alright with it then I might keep it around because it's very in his character to try to point it out in a friendly yet worried way and I like the humor of the situation too. :-) I'm glad you like him because I'm really digging Sierra.

No totally! I like his concern too. It’s gonna catch her off guard!

I’ll edit the shoes out of my post in the morning. I think Alder and Sierra will be a really fun duo to play!
@Obscene Symphony I just noticed I made an error in my response. I'm going to fix that.

Btw, I loved your first post. It was very nice!

Aw, thank you! I normally find my first post to be the hardest. Once that’s out of the way, things tend to flow much better. Alden is adorable!

And don’t worry about that, I actually kind of like the mistake better. The idea of Sierra forgetting her shoes and coming in barefoot only to learn that shoes are expected is too funny to pass up!

If you still want to fix it that’s fine, I won’t be able to do anything until tomorrow anyway. Let me know! ^_^
Oh god, my first post is always garbage XD I haven't played this character in ages, haha. I swear my posts will get better now that the first is out of the way!
