Yaaay~! Magical Dream Princess gets to go firsty worsty this timey wimey~! That makes her sooo super duper happy wappy, she’s gonna use one of these quotey wotey thingie wingies to tell everybodywody~! (giggle!)

-MDP

MDP giggled happily as she skipped inside Penny’s snow fort.

“Golly wolly~!” the whimsical girl gasped as she looked around the interior of the fort with childish wonderment. “There’s, like, sooo many Penny Wennies in heresie~! (giggle!) Like, Magical Dream Princess didn’t know you could duplicatey waitey yourselfy welfy, Penny Wenny~!” she told the mechanical monarch, while smiling from ear to ear. Giving voice to a blissful sigh, her face took on an exceptionally dreamy expression as she watched her girlfriend(s) go about their work. “Penny Wenny’s just sooo super duper cool~”

The original Penny then greeted her with an embrace, and MDP giggled sweetly as she returned the hug. “Awww~ Thanky wanky, Penny Wenny~” the whimsical girl told her robotic girlfriend, while nuzzling her affectionately.

It was about then that a very familiar voice called out over the snowy battlefield, causing MDP to squeal with delight. “Goodie woodie~! Mayra Wayra’s heresie weresie~! (giggle!)” the playful girl cheered as she bounced over to peek out one of the fortress’s view ports. “Wowie zowie~!” she exclaimed a moment later when Mayra revealed her secret weapon. “That’s, like, a super duper snowball wowball~!” MDP’s eyes widened at the sight, and widened even more a moment later, when the draconic girl hurled her creation through the air towards them. However, before it could impact the walls of Penny’s fort, the monster snowball was swallowed by a portal, which vanished as quickly as it had appeared.

MDP stared at the space in stunned silence for several seconds before a bright smile spread across her face. “Mayra Wayra’s super duper giant wiant snowball wowball went bye bye~! (giggle!)” the whimsical girl cheered, clapping her hands and jumping up and down with innocent glee. “Na na na na na, yooou miiiissed~!” she teased, while turning around and shaking her butt at the dragon girl. MDP’s eyes glistened when she heard Penny say that she was her princess, and the playful girl wasted no time in putting her arm around her girlfriend’s waist and snuggling up close. “Awww~ Magical Dream Princess just wuvs when Penny Wenny gets so romantic wantic~” a blushing MDP told the robotic girl, while fluttering her eyes.

After a few seconds of cuddling (which is a long time for someone as hyperactive as MDP), the playful girl turned her attention to the still-raging battle. “Like, Magical Dream Princess thinks it’s, like, super duper sweet that you want to protect her, Penny Wenny, but she wants to helpy welpy, too~! (giggle!)” MDP declared. Waving her wand over the battlements, she conjured several cute snowmen, who set about hurling a massive volley of additional snowballs at the fort’s various attackers. MDP was still admiring her work, when a peal of obnoxious laughter resounded throughout the battlefield. Looking up, the whimsical girl saw the dramatic arrival of two new participants. “Wowie zowie~!” she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with innocent fascination. “Like, who are those people weple~?!”

A Minor Interlude...

An unremarkable world in an unremarkable corner of an unremarkable universe, Pastoria had never known the clamorous sounds of conflict. The picturesque landscapes of its rural surface were lightly dappled with a few dozen sleepy farming villages, whose quiet, hard-working inhabitants lived a peaceful, unhurried existence. Never caring overmuch for clocks or calendars, they moved through the gentle shifting of the seasons with the same serene placidity displayed by the billowing cloud formations that lazily drifted across the azure sky. There were no schemes, no power plays, no desires for greater land or greater wealth, merely the mundane tasks of daily life. Simple, perhaps, but simplicity has its share of benefits, and the people of Pastoria were content.

Then came the day when everything changed- The day the Dark Legions of Darketh von Darkenstine, Dark Lord of All Darkness descended upon the unsuspecting world…

It didn’t take long. Scarcely more than an hour after their arrival, nearly the entire planet had been subjugated by the dark legions. The peaceful natives offered no resistance and calmly complied with everything demanded of them. It was actually rather disappointing, Ramona Ralorin reflected as she stood on a hill overlooking the final town to be conquered. “They could have at least tried to put up some kind of opposition…” she grumbled, while her legion formed up behind her. A vast host of dark magical girls, monster girls, shadow demons, dark spirits, animated suits of armor and various technomantic war engines all covered in menacing spikes, it presented an imposing sight, one intended to strike fear into even the stoutest heart. Or, rather, it would, if there was anyone to actually stand against it…

“Be not discouraged, my dear Ramona, Lord Darketh bade his most trusted servant. “Your subjugation of this world has been most exemplary!”

“Well, of course it has,” Ramona agreed with a smug nod. “I only wish it was more of a challenge…”

“My dear Ramona, do you know why we’ve saved this particular village for last?”

“No idea…”

“It is because it holds a great secret, one my new scientific advisor tells me has the power to make our forces utterly unstoppable! Its attainment shall serve as the perfect capstone to our conquest! Rejoice, Ramona, that the honor of its claiming has been given to you!”

“Yaay…” Ramona deadpanned.

“Lord Darketh, Lady Ralorin,” a lesser dark magical girl greeted as she knelt before them. “The legion is fully formed up. We merely await your command.”

“Excellent!” Darketh declared. “The command is given! Bless this pitiful village with the dark touch of Darketh von Darkenstine, Dark Lord of All Darkness!”

However, before the dark lord’s command could be carried out, a shadow imp scout swooped down and prostrated itself at Darketh’s armored feet. “My lord, someone approaches from the village! They seek an audience with your dark majesty!”

“Such boldness!” the dark lord exclaimed, clearly impressed. “Very well! Their request is accepted! Come, Ramona! Let us see what form of foolish being wishes to converse with Darketh von Darkenstine, Dark Lord of All Darkness!”

Making their way to the edge of the hill, they looked down to see a rather scrawny young woman with long, messy dark hair and wearing goggles and an oversized lab coat.

“Your wish for an audience has been granted, feeble peasant!” Darketh’s booming voice announced. “Rejoice that the mighty Lord Darketh has deigned to bestow upon you this great honor!”

“Yeah, I think I’ll pass on that,” the young woman replied. Giving voice to a tired sigh, she continued, “Okay, so, here’s the thing- I’m in the middle of some really important work here, so would you mind taking all your emo forces and fucking off back to whatever edge lord paradise you came from?”

“Such insolence!” Darketh bellowed. “Such effrontery! Who are you that you would dare to address the Dark Lord of All Darkness in such an impudent manner?!”

Seeing the dark lord’s outrage, the young woman’s mouth spread into an extremely twisted grin. “I’m Doctor Nykannis, Queen of the Mad Scientists!” she announced. “And although you losers are probably way too stupid to realize it, this little mud ball of a planet is actually the core of a galaxy-spanning overmind, created by a race of omni-dimensional beings who used it to rule this entire multiversal spectrum! All of their vast knowledge is stored in this thing, but since it’s gone completely senile after being around for ten trillion years, its noospheric thoughtscape isn’t the easiest thing to navigate. And that’s before you even get to the security systems,” she explained, rolling her eyes in exasperation. “Spending a few millennia stuck in a recursive time loop, or drifting on a Dirac Sea isn’t my idea of fun, so I knew I needed to find some sort of intermediary to serve as a guide. Thankfully, while I was excavating the control node under this village, I was able to find the thing’s Caretaker, who, I gotta say, is a LOT easier to converse with. In fact, our little chats had just reached a critical juncture, when you idiots showed up and started making a racket! So, if you wouldn’t mind playing ‘pretentious interdimensional tyrant’ somewhere else, I’d really appreciate it. Otherwise, I’m afraid you’re just gonna end up embarrassing yourselves. Well, more than you have already,” she added after moment.

“Impudent peasant!” Darketh roared. “I do indeed know of the great power that resides here! My scientific advisor has already revealed all of this world’s secrets, and it is HE upon whom I shall bestow the honor of extinguishing your pathetic existence!”

A burst of lightning and a mighty thunderclap heralded the creation of a tear in the dimensional fabric, through which floated several techno-cylinders. The barrels of several ultratech weapons protruded from their sides, while atop the largest of them stood a silver-haired scientist in a white lab coat. An array of strange, cybernetic implants protruded from his enlarged cranium, while one of his arms was an oversized amalgamation of features from a variety of monstrous beasts. “Mawhawhawhaw!” He cackled manically. “It is I, Doctor Zinestine, the greatest super-scientific genius to ever exist! I knew I would find you here, Kannis!” he gloated, looking down upon his arch rival with gleeful hatred. “Which is the very reason I told Lord Darketh about this place! Muwahhaha! Soon all you have discovered here will be mine, and you will be very dead!”

“Nyahahahaha!” Nykannis cackled in response. Zinestine?! Zinestine’s your scientific advisor?! That idiot couldn’t even build a teleporter without looking at an instruction manual! You honestly think I’m gonna be intimidated by someone like him?! Nyahahahaha! You’re even dumber than I thought!”

“A pox upon you Kannis!” Zinestine spat. “Mark my words, I will not suffer your ridicule a moment longer! Behold!” he exulted, raising his hands above his head, while lighting crackled from his splayed fingers. “My greatest creation! Nothing less than the very pinnacle of my technomantic prowess and the instrument of your doom!”

With that, a new tear opened in the dimensional fabric, from which fell a young woman with patchwork skin and neon pink hair. “Hey! Hey! Whazzup, guys?!” the girl shouted exuberantly, while grinning from ear to ear. “Oh my gosh!” she exclaimed, her eyes going wide. “Ramona!” rushing over, she attempted to glomp the dark magical girl, but several dark tendrils shot up from the ground to restrain her, while a translucent barrier of dark magic interposed itself between the two young women.

“Hello, Stacy,” Ramona greeted the monster girl dryly.

While she wasn’t resisting the tendrils’ grasp, Stacy’s head was moving so fast she seemed to be looking in every direction at once. “Holy crap! There’s, like, a whole army here! Are you guys gonna have a battle?!” she asked excitedly, her eyes glittering with anticipation. “Am I gonna fight in it with you?! Oh wow! That’s gonna be, like, so much fun!”

“I highly doubt it,” Ramona replied. “The people here are all pacifists who surrendered right away. The only one making any kind of fuss is that scrawny nerd over there, and I could snap her like a twig without even using my magic.”

“Huh, she really is kinda scrawny,” Stacy observed. “And her hair is, like, a total disaster! Hey, Ramona,” she whispered, “Do ya think she might surrender if I offered to give her a makeover?”

The dark magical girl gave Stacy a blank stare. “Highly. Doubt it.”

For her part, Nykannis simply stared at the new arrival for several seconds, her eyes wide. “Pfft…” she snickered, before hugging herself, tossing her head back, and unleashing a peal of hysterical laughter. “Bawhawhawhaw! That’s your greatest creation?! That ditzy airhead?!” Another deranged cackle erupted from the Monarch of Mad Science before she continued. “The only way your little walking joke over there could kill me is if I laughed myself to death!”

“ENOUGH!!!” Lord Darketh bellowed. “The time has come for you to perish!”

“You really wanna do this?” Nykannis asked after catching her breath. “I mean, you can still walk away with at least some of your dignity intact.”

“My penumbral host is mighty in power, imposing in aspect, and unrelenting in ferocity! With what army do you intend to oppose it?!”

“Oh, I don’t know…” Nykannis replied with a demented smirk. “How about THIS ONE?!!! NYAHAHAHA!!!”

In a blinding burst of energy, a vast legion of ultra magitech constructs appeared behind the Monarch of Mad Science, who had herself shifted into her massive combat form. Glowing crystalline techno-pyramids floated above rank upon rank of kilometer tall biomechanical titans, while smaller mechs strode beside gargantuan, artificially intelligent supertanks and thick clouds of counter-gravity weapons drones.

“Holy freaking crap!” Stacy exclaimed, her eyes going wide. “That looks SO freaking cool!” Taking out her phone, she snapped a few pictures and then started typing.

“Uh, what are you doing?” Ramona inquired, her voice a dull monotone. This was due less to her usual apathy, and far more to her uncharacteristic shock at the sight of what had just occurred.

“I’m posting the pics I took on Glimmer!” Stacy replied, as energetic and upbeat as ever.

“You’re seriously posting about how cool you think the things you’re about to fight look? Things created by your Parton’s arch rival and someone who just called you a ditzy airhead?”

“Yeah!” Stacy confirmed with an oblivious smile. “I mean, you can see how totally awesome they are, can’t you?!” she asked, gesturing towards the newly arrived army in an exaggerated fashion. “And besides,” she added with a giggle. “I totally am a ditzy airhead!”

“Why do I choose to socialize with you?” Ramona muttered, while massaging the bridge of her nose.

Meanwhile, Lord Darketh was having an equally unpleasant time. “W-Where did this host come from?!” the dark lord cried. “Surely a pitiful worm such as you could not possibly have conjured it from thin air!”

"T-This c-cannot be possible!" Zinestine stammered. "My sensors should have detected..."

“Baldy, your sensors couldn't detect a bird if it was about to shit on your head,” Nykannis sneered. “And creating them from scratch wouldn’t have actually been all that difficult,” the mad scientist added with a smug grin. “But, no, these guys have always been here. If you take a look around, you’ll see that I’ve shifted us into an adjacent, trans-planar layer of the multiversal spectrum. This little out-of phase pocket dimension was just sitting around collecting dust, so I figured it was the perfect place to stash my army. And since there’s no risk of damaging anything valuable, it’s also the perfect place to TEACH YOU LOSERS WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA TO PISS OFF DOCTOR NYKANNIS, QUEEN OF THE MAD SCIENTISTS!!! NYAHAHAHA!!!”

With that, the battle began. Over the next hour, destructive forces were unleashed that utterly mocked all attempts at comprehension. Volleys of missiles choked the skies, while multicolored beams of starkly astounding energies were vomited forth from bizarre weapons that defied description. Warriors were erased from existence before they could even be born, whole regiments were swallowed up by quantum singularities, and no less than seventeen Earths at the first moments of World War III were saved from thermonuclear annihilation when every last ICBM was portaled away to bombard Lord Darketh’s personal Obsidian Colossus (and that was just to break through its penumbra barrier, before a condensed, highly focused blast from a supernova finished it off). Insidious hexes laid even the mightiest mobile fortresses low, while a series of death curses felled no less than four biomechanical titans, with six more being impaled by a crackling Killing Blow. Both sides fought with all the staggering power available to them, power enough to destroy a universe several times over, but in the end, it was the Monarch of Mad Science who would claim ultimate victory…

“And that’s how I defeated the combined forces of Darketh von Darkenstien and Dr. Zinestine! They might have seemed imposing to lower lifeforms, but they never stood a chance against my incomparable super-scientific genius! Nyahahaha! So, what do ya think about that, Dan?! Pretty awesome, huh?!” When the dolphin didn’t respond, Nykannis looked around to find that their host had vanished. “Dan…?”

“Uh, he left like ten minutes ago,” Kate explained with an awkward grin.

Since Dan was an old friend of Kate’s, he had invited her to spend Christmas at his new winter-themed island, and she’d brought along a reluctant Nykannis as her plus one. The two friends had arrived long before any of the other guests, and were currently sitting on a private outdoor balcony on the lodge’s second floor. It granted an excellent view of the wintery landscape, but was still perfectly warm, thanks to Dan’s magic. Of course, Nykannis wasn’t really a fan of the winter scenery, and so, as she sipped her cup of hot cocoa, she’d chosen to regale their aquatic host with tales of her greatest exploits. Indeed, she had been so invested in singing her own praises that she had apparently failed to notice the dolphin’s departure.

“What?!” the mad scientist roared. “What the hell for?!

“I think he said something about needing to greet the other guests,” Kate shrugged.

“Other guests?” Nykannis asked with a raised eyebrow. “What other guests?”

“Y’know, the ones at the big party downstairs,” Kate replied pointing her thumb towards the inner balcony. “He’s holding it for the entire magical community of Penrose.”

“Penrose?!” Nykannis nearly spit out her drink as she jumped out of her incredibly comfy chair in search of the nearest exit. “You brought me to a place filled with a bunch of lunatics from that shithole?! What the hell, Kate?! You said this was gonna be a relaxing vacation! The last thing I need is to be dragged into the drama of those nut jobs!”

“Chill out, will ya?” Kate chuckled. “Dan specifically gave us this balcony so we wouldn’t be bothered, and no one even knows we’re here!”

“Well, Dan’s a pretty shitty host, so you’ll understand why I’m a little skeptical about that,” Nykannis grumbled. “I mean, first he makes me wear this stupid outfit, then he refuses to let me dissect one of his stupid snowbuns, and now he wanders off when I’m right in the middle of I’m telling him how awesome I am!”

“Yeah, he’s such a jerk,” Kate agreed, while giving her friend a wry grin.

“I know, right?!” the mad scientist continued, far too annoyed to notice her friend’s sarcasm. “Gaah… I’m completely bored out of my mind here! There’s nothing interesting to do! I mean, I can’t even create anything without it turning into some stupid Christmas ornament or decoration!” she added, holding out a dreidel for emphasis. “And yes, I know dreidels have nothing to do with Christmas! Blame the stupid dolphin!”

“Okay, okay,” Kate conceded, raising her hands in an attempt to placate her disgruntled friend. “Look, I think I know how we can make things more interesting,” she added, as a mischievous grin spread across her face. “How about watching me prank someone?”

“Prank someone?” the mad scientist echoed. “You mean someone down there?” she asked, gesturing back inside the lodge.

“Yeah,” Kate confirmed. “Shouldn’t be too hard to find at least one good target in a crowd that big.”

“A crowd full of edgelords, zealots, and people with more mental and emotional issues than you could fit in a Dyson Sphere,” Nykannis observed. “I really don’t wanna have to reconstruct you from your constituent molecules if you piss off the wrong psychopath.”

“Relax, would ya?” Kate laughed. “I’m not gonna prank some sadistic psycho, and besides, there’s no fighting here, remember? Trust me, I’ll be perfectly safe!”

“Fine…” the mad scientist relented. “But I assume you’ll need my help for this prank, correct?”

“You know it!” Kate grinned. “Okay, so here’s what I need you to create…”

Once Nykannis had completed her invention, Kate took it and made her way downstairs, followed by a small, cloaked drone, which would allow Nykannis to see the entire prank play out on a holographic display (it should be noted that this happened mere moments before the Mysterious Guest’s arrival on the indoor balcony). Arriving in the crowded central hall, it didn’t take Kate long to find what looked like a suitable victim, and once her trusty camera had confirmed her suspicions, she headed over to introduce herself.

“Hi there,” Kate said cheerfully as she stepped up to the refreshment table opposite one of the few magical boys present. “You’re Shane, right?”

Turning to the one that approached, Shane nodded. ”Yeah, that’s me.”

“I’m Kate Carson,” the girl replied. “Nice to meet ya!” she added with a big grin, while flashing a peace sign. “Enjoying the party so far?”

”Nice to meet you Kate. It’s been pretty good so far. Some odd surprises but patrons don’t always make a lot of sense. Probably going to see about joining one of the events or another.” He would chuckle a bit.

“Yeah, I noticed there’s all sorts of stuff going on around here,” Kate replied. “I gotta admit, it’s a little crazy that Patrons were invited to this thing too, but then, I guess that’s Dan for ya, huh?” she added with a chuckle.

“Uh, Shane…?” Gaia asked, while staring at her date with a slightly puzzled expression. “Who are you talking to?”

Glancing at his girlfriend for a moment he would point in the direction of Kate. ”You don’t see anyone?”

“Umm…” Gaia frowned, her eyes filled with concern. “No… As far as I can tell, there’s no one there…”

“Oh, yikes… I forgot to tell ya,” Kate said with a sheepish grin. “I’m your new imaginary friend. You’re the only one that can see and hear me.”

”...Hmm.” He would ponder for a bit. ”Apparently I have an imaginary friend. That… isn’t the most farfetched thing I could imagine.” While he spoke he would look around the room to see if he could spot anyone watching specifically. Since no one else saw Kate he didn’t imagine it would be an illusion. However, his brain has been assaulted by a horror in the past so he very well could be losing it.

“You’re probably wondering why you’re only just now seeing me for the first time, right?” Kate observed, giving Shane a lopsided smile. “Well, y’know that gift exchange thing?” Kate asked. “I always called ‘em ‘Secret Santas’, but I guess ‘White Elephant’ is, like, the nondenominational name, or somethin’?” she shrugged. “Anyways, someone wished for a person here at the party to get their very own imaginary friend, and you were the lucky winner, so here I am!” she told him, spreading her arms out. “Pretty cool, huh?”

Scratching his head for a moment he didn’t see any of the organizers around to confirm that the gifts had been handed out. Given they were wishes, and he knew decently how the djinn girl’s magic worked, it was entirely possible. ”Okay well…” How exactly does one respond to having an imaginary friend out of nowhere?

For her part, Gaia was just as confused as Shane. She was pretty sure some sort of magic was behind this imaginary friend’s appearance, but who’s? Perhaps this was the work of the whimsical MDP, or perhaps the recently departed horror was responsible…

“So, Shane, does your imaginary friend have a name?” Gaia asked.

”Kate Carson.” He would answer.

“Kate, huh?” Gaia mused while tapping an elegant finger against her chin. MDP had mentioned knowing someone named Kate… “I don’t claim to be an expert on imaginary friends, but you wouldn’t happen to know anyone named Magical Dream Princess, would you, Kate?” she asked the “imaginary” girl.

Shane would notice Kate’s eyes go wide and her face visibly pale at the sound of MDP’s name. “Uh, n-no,” Kate replied shakily. “C-Can’t say that I do…” Despite her denials, it was clear to see that the “imaginary” girl was more than a little freaked out at that particular name being brought up. “Uh, w-why do you ask?”

The answer was suspicious for sure. But not really having any way to detect who or what Kate was the boy was at a loss. Luckily for him the antics had drawn the attention of another guest.

”See, not everyone here is against you. If you ever need help feel free to contact me. If you’ll excuse me I need to see some of the other guests.” She would hand Justine her number and leave the girl to talk with Alex. She was going to head outside but got briefly sidetracked by the odd magic happening by the refreshments. Someone or something was trying to hide, and doing a fairly decent job at it. Adjusting her path she walked in the direction of the tables.

”Pardon me.” She would say as she seemed to be reaching for an item on the table. Instead though she shifted her hand over and took hold of the small device that Kate was using to cloak herself. Light magic bending things back as they should the trickster would become visible again as the candy cane looking device was removed. ”A curious invention.” She would look it over a bit.

Kate was stunned speechless when a white-haired girl walked over, and calmly took hold of Nykannis’s device, which had taken the form of a candy cane, protruding from the pocket of Kate’s jacket. “W-W-Whaa…?!” she stammered after a few moments of shocked paralyzation had passed. “Y-You can see me?!”

“It would appear we all can,” Gaia clarified with a small smirk.

“W-Who the heck are you?” a still visibly shocked Kate asked the new arrival. “A-And… c-can I please have that back…?” she added in a much smaller voice.

As tempting as it would be to keep such a device, theft was not necessarily something the Keeper wanted to be associated with. After a moment she would calmly hold the magitech item out to Kate. ”Kayli Devon. Is this perhaps one of your creations?” It could very well be something the girl picked up, but it was worth asking.

“Uh, not exactly,” Kate replied, as she tentatively reached out and took the device back. “A friend made it for me,” she added. A friend who was probably having a sizable conniption right now, Kate thought to herself. “And thanks,” she told Kayli with a small smile. “I really appreciate it. Oh, and, uh, sorry about that, Shane,”  she told the magical boy, while giving voice to a nervous chuckle. “It was only meant to be a harmless prank.”

Pretty much only left to watch as a stranger came out of nowhere and interacted with magic he had no way of really understanding, Shane just stood confused for a bit.  ”Uh, thanks for the help Kayli.” He would blink and glance at Gaia a couple times who seemed just as lost as he was. Kate would apologize though and the boy would smile. ”That’s okay. No harm done.”

“Allow me to get this straight,” Gaia spoke up, folding her arms below her chest. “You wanted to prank someone by pretending to be their imaginary friend, and in so doing, make them look like they had lost their mind?”

“Uh, yeah…?” Kate confirmed sheepishly, more than a little intimidated by the verdant beauty glaring down at her.

She shouldn’t have worried, though. After a moment’s silence, Gaia’s lip began to twitch, before the nymph-like girl gave voice to a melodic peal of laughter. After giggling hysterically for several seconds, the botanical beauty finally began to regain her composure. Gracefully wiping a tear from her eye, she turned to her boyfriend. “I-I am so sorry, Shane,” a breathless Gaia told him between giggles. “It’s just so funny!” Getting a few more boisterous laughs out of her system, the verdant girl gave voice to a blissful sigh. “Thank you, Kate,” she said, placing a hand on the prankster’s shoulder and flashing her a brilliant smile. “I do not think I have laughed so hard in quite some time.”

Shane threw his hands up a bit. ”Hey, I’ve heard of some crazy things. There was a Beacon girl that had a whole other persona in her head. It sounded plausible to me.” He would sigh a bit but concede. ”I’ll admit, it was a good prank.”

”I would very much like to meet your friend, Kate. Perhaps we could exchange some notes.” She would have to discern intention. That shouldn’t be hard to do if they got the chance to talk.

“Oh, uh, I’ll have to ask her,” Kate replied hesitantly. “She loves to talk about science and stuff, but she’s kinda reluctant to get sucked into all of Penrose’s craziness. Huh, this is her now,” she added, retrieving her buzzing phone from a jacket pocket. “Hey, Nykannis. Oh? You’re fine with her coming up? Okay then. So, how’d you like the show?” she asked with a grin. “Well, I couldn’t really help that. If you say so,” she chuckled. “See ya.” Ending the call, she turned back to Kayli. “She says you can come up and talk with her. I gotta say, I wasn’t expecting her to wanna chat with one of you Penrose folks in an environment she can’t fully control, but you really impressed her. So, uh, congratulations? Speaking of, how were you able to see me?” she asked Kayli. “The perception filter on that device should have been strong enough to fool even Third Eyes.”

”I didn’t see you so much as felt some abnormality. Just happen to have particular magical senses and curiosity.” She didn’t want to get into the weeds about such things. They could be there forever. It seemed she’d been granted an audience to see this Nykannis though. ”Excellent.” She would glance at Shane and then Gaia. ”I will leave you two to yourselves. Maybe we could chat later.” She would smile and turn back to Kate. ”Whenever you’re ready.”

“So I guess you’re one of those gifted types, huh?” Kate observed after listening to Kayli’s explanation. “That’s cool. And it’ll help ya get along better with Nykannis,” she added. “She loves learning about interesting types of magic.”

After Kayli had exchanged some parting words with Shane and Gaia, she got ready to leave with Kate.

“Okay, then, just follow me,” Kate instructed. “Oh yeah,” she added, calling back to the couple by the refreshment table. “If ya see MDP, could ya do me a big favor and not tell her I’m here?”

“Of course,” Gaia nodded serenely. “I am well acquainted with how overwhelming her personality can be, and I completely understand if you wish to avoid dealing with it.”

As the other two had decided to head off the boy would shake his head. He would look at Gaia with a slightly bewildered expression. ”I was this close to accepting I’d been given some weird wish or had lost my mind. You have no idea.”

“There are many strange things in this world,” Gaia would observe. “So it wouldn’t have been completely out of the question if you really did receive your very own imaginary friend. Still…” she added as she gave him a teasing grin. “You looked absolutely adorable when you were trying to figure out what was going on.”

He would grin. ”Good to know I look cute even when baffled.” He would give Gaia a kiss on the cheek.

Gaia would giggle after being kissed. “Why, Shane, there isn’t even any mistletoe! Or perhaps my hair qualifies?” she would ask with a grin as she ran her fingers through her verdant tresses.

"Oops. Guess I'll have to wait until we see some next time." He would shrug.

“I guess so,” Gaia would reply, before conjuring a sprig of mistletoe and holding it over them. The next thing Shane knew, his girlfriend had pulled him close and given him a very passionate kiss.

Somehow it didn't occur to him that Gaia could or would do such a thing. He was surprised by the move and for a moment was a bit stiff until he leaned a bit more into the kiss.

Gaia allowed the kiss to last for several seconds more, before she slowly pulled away. “Merry Christmas,” she said softly, while giving Shane a warm smile.

"Merry Christmas." He half expected some to call out for them to get a room. Time would tell. "So there's quite a lot to do here it seems. Where would you like to go?"

“I believe our event coordinator mentioned sledding,” Gaia replied. “That sounds like it might be rather enjoyable. After all, you are certainly dressed for it,” she added with a wink.

He would smirk. "Sounds good. Let's see where that is." Looking around a bit they would find a sign just outside the door pointing them to the various events. "Ah, this way then." The directions would send them around to the other side of the cabin where a big hill was with various slopes.

Allowing Shane to lead her, Gaia gracefully glided out of the lodge.

“Connie,” Gaia called to her friend just before stepping outside. “Shane and I are heading out for some sledding. Will you be okay by yourself?”

“Y-Yeah, I-I’ll be f-fine, Mia!” Connie replied with a shaky wave. “H-Have f-fun!”

Oh, I believe we certainly shall, little sister, Gaia thought to herself, a blush coloring her cheeks as she took Shane’s hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. I believe we certainly shall…

Following Kate, Kayli would be led upstairs to meet with Nykannis. Upon reaching the private balcony, they would find the mad scientist watching the ongoing snowball fight through a pair of goggles, while eating from a cup labeled Merry Mac-and-Cheese, with the image of a Santa hat wearing dolphin-shaped noodle on the side of it. A dozen more (mostly empty) cups now covered the balcony’s small table, along with some cookies and a refilled mug of hot cocoa. Apparently, Dan had returned at some point after Kate left and brought additional refreshments, which Nykannis had wasted no time in gobbling up.

“Sheesh, save some for me, would ya!” Kate grumbled.

“Penny and MDP,” Nykannis replied, not bothering to turn around, and completely ignoring her friend’s complaint. “Two of the most powerful, non-Patron magical beings in this entire reality plenum, and I can’t run any tests or scans on them, thanks to Dan’s magic… But I suppose you’re a suitable consolation prize,” she added, finally turning around to face her guest. “So, you’re Kayli Devon, huh? I hope you realize how lucky you are that I’m allowing you to have this little chat with me,” Nykannis told her, by way of greeting. “I wouldn’t risk the deal I made with the Grand Magistrates that run this place for just anyone, y’know? And, just to clarify, by ‘this place’ I mean this particular iteration of the multiverse, because, yes, there are other multiverses out there, one’s that even the great and powerful Grand Magistrates can’t influence. Bet ya didn’t know that, huh?” she added with a smug smirk.

Somewhat of an odd place to start a conversation, but this girl seemed rather eccentric if not somewhat unhinged. "It's not a subject I've put much thought into. One reality is enough to manage as is." She would pull up and take a seat. For now she would not comment on the want to study Penny or the other magical girl. "I'm to understand I've piqued your interest?"

“Yeah, most lower lifeforms don’t,” the mad scientist would agree with a nod. “And you could say that,” she added, her eyes narrowing. “It’s not just anyone that can negate the effects of my inventions like that. I’m guessing you’ve got a Third Eye, coupled with a Gifted Light Spec, right? Being gifted’s a pretty sweet ability to have,” she continued. “You can do a lot of creative stuff with it, even break some of the rules of this reality, if you put enough effort into it. But something tells me you’ve got more goin’ on than just that. You’d pretty much have to, if you’re living in Penrose, of all places. So, what’s your deal? Are you working with one of the local factions, or are you a solo operation?”

”Undecided.” She would state while putting a hand to one cheek. Her magic was working in the background and sifting through every word uttered by Nykannis. At the same time her charismatic aura was on the job as well. ”I am not as interested in vying for power for power’s sake. I feel that most patron’s deals come with too many strings. Solo best describes my position.” She would confirm.

“I see…” Nykannis murmured. “And what about your motivations?” she asked. “Your other magic specs? Your reason for wanting to come up here and meet me?” The mad scientist’s eyes grew wider with each question asked as a look of manic desperation took hold of her features. “Come on, Kayli! I’m bored out of my fucking mind here! The only reason I agreed to this was because I hoped you could tell me something interesting, but all you’re giving me are these pathetic one sentence responses! I saw how impressed you were by that little gadget I whipped up for Kate,” she continued. “So I’m pretty sure you’re a scientist of some sort, which means you’ve created something you think has value, or maybe you just need something created, and you want me to do it?! Well?! What is it?! What amazing things have you done, Kayli?! What amazing things do you want me to do?! GIVE ME SOMETHING TO WORK WITH, HERE!!!”

By this point, Nykannis had left her chair and fully invaded Kayli’s personal space, her bulging eyes twitching and her shaking hands grasping at the air.

Raising a hand, Kayli would lightly tap Nykannis’ forehead with a finger. A pulse of light would go off as the magical girl’s power washed though her target. It was warm and her mind quieted unlike anything the mad scientist had felt in a long time. ”I seek to grant others the gift of security. Ideally the goal would be peace, but peace is fleeting. I believe it may be advantageous for humanity to have a space at the magical table. Some would disagree with that, others the way how. I would like to know your opinions on the matter and how you would go about such a thing.” Coaxing the information out of the scientist rather directly.

“Huh, that feels kinda nice…” Nykannis observed absently, after Kayli had filled her with calming energy. “So, you’re one of those pacifistic ‘kumbaya’ types, huh? I can sorta relate,” she added with a smirk. “Lucky for you, it just so happens I know someone who feels the same way, at least where mundane human empowerment is concerned. As for me, personally, I couldn’t really care less. Science! is the only thing I care about. The only reason I’m even in this multiverse to begin with is because I needed a place to lay low for awhile, and although they’ve given me permission to stay here for a bit, the Grand Magistrates don’t want me doing anything that could significantly affect the local status quo. Ripples, not waves, and all that crap. So, technically I’m helping my current employer work towards that ‘give humans a seat’ thing you’re talking about, but I’ve gotta do it in the background, rather than make any overt changes. Which isn’t to say I couldn’t!” the mad scientist hastened to clarify. “Especially now that I’ve finally got The Artifact running at full power! I mean, if I had my way, if I could really crank things up to 1123, y’know, really plus ultra the shit outta it, I could have you Neanderthals at Level Four on the Kardashev Scale in less than a week! I’m talkin’ post-post-post-singularity here! Power for everyone rivaling the so-called gods themselves! Nyahahaha! Uh, you still followin’ along with all this?” she asked after a moment, her insane grin swiftly dissolving into a disappointed frown. “You look like you’re having some trouble wrapping your little mind around what I’m saying.”

"No one can be truly pacifist, not if they wish to protect anything in this world anyway. There are some terms you've used that I'm unfamiliar with, but I think I understand. A surplus of magic sounds like an interesting proposition. I'm not really sure of the results though. Your average beings don't always react so well to magical overloads. Wouldn't such a thing result in uncontrolled transformations?" She would ask.

“Oh, I see where you might get that idea,” Nykannis replied, her smirk having returned after receiving confirmation that Kayli did indeed understand at least the basics of what she was talking about. “But no, the process I’m referring to would be completely controlled by yours truly, and everyone benefiting from this little ‘upgrade’ would each come with a built-in Off Switch, which would reverse the process for that particular individual if they started causing problems. Though this is all just hypothetical,” she sighed. “There’s no way the Grand Magistrates would let me use The Artifact at even a quarter of its full potential. And on THAT note, I think it’s time for you to start telling me a bit about your own accomplishments. I wanna hear more about what makes Kayli Devon so great, before I decide to reveal any more of my secrets. For instance,” she added with a raised finger, an intense gleam in her eye. “Rumor has it there are some interesting new flavors of Cosmic Omniversal Infusion Numinospheric Synthesizers floating around. You wouldn’t happen to know anything about them, would you?”

Considering Nykannis was telling her about some pretty high level magic manipulation and had proven resourceful in her own right the girl nodded. How she could turn off the effects was curious. At least the girl didn't seem to be lying as far as she believed. "Interesting. I am familiar with the new variants. Rather interesting effects the Red and White ones have. The first rearranges the user's magic either in part or in whole. Even offers a few additional perks that couldn't previously be accessed. The White ones purify individuals of corruption and induct them into Beacon. It was an attempt by the organization to reach out to some of those that did not wish to be corrupted. It had a less than stellar reception." She would go over a brief history of the coins. Holding up her hands and folding them in front of her face they would glow with a purifying light. "My particular field involves purification though. Some or all. I've found I'm decently proficient with tweaking magical gadgets given the necessary resources. I could demonstrate if you have a particular corruptive trait you are not fond of." The light would die down after a moment. She would lay her hand back down and give a pleasant smile.

“Hmmm,” Nykannis mused. “Yeah, that matches what I heard, although I was hoping you might be able to tell me who made them,” she frowned. “My employer could use someone with those kinds of skills, and abilities of that nature also have the potential of significantly expediting my own work. Still… That purification thing of yours could have some very interesting applications as well…” the mad scientist added, tapping her chin thoughtfully. “Not for me, mind you,” she clarified. “I was thinking more along the lines of removing negative traits from some of the operatives I’ll be making with The Artifact. Since it still follows the core rules of this reality plenum, if I go full monster girl with it, I’ve gotta pick out some potentially disadvantageous options, and that can be pretty annoying. It would be really nice to be able to just keep all the benefits and discard all the drawbacks, no doubt about it,” she nodded. “I mean, I could always try and replicate the exact set of abilities you have,” she continued, more “thinking out loud” than actually conversing at this point. “But since you still won’t TELL ME HOW YOUR MAGIC WORKS, it’ll probably take a bit of experimentation. Not that I don’t enjoy experimenting,” the mad scientist explained. “It’s just that I like to make progress at a little faster than a snail’s pace, y’know?”

"How I do it is more of an inherent trait of mine than by experimentation. I do not currently have a way to replicate the results. Synthesizing such a thing would require time to sort out the necessary steps, fabricate the right instruments, and a lengthy time etching and infusing the correct sigils in order to give them the correct magical properties. Not impossible I would think, but not entirely practical. Certainly I am the easier of the two options." She would explain. Kayli didn't really want to put this girl on Binky's scent in regards to the Red coins and identifying Janet would inevitably lead back to her one way or another. Not that what they'd discussed didn't already put her in the scientist's sights. To some degree though she wasn't all that different from say Janet when it came to pushing the boundaries.

“Yeah, that’s what I mean,” Nykannis nodded, her grin widening. That’s why I want to learn more about you. Is this trait you speak of some sort of Oddball Purification Spec, a Power, a Perk, or some synergistic interaction between them? See, here’s the thing,” she added, leaning in close and lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “When I first got here, it didn’t take long for me to realize that the powers and abilities that can manifest in this particular reality plenum can be pretty nuts. That’s a scientific term, by the way. The rules that govern how things work here are also extremely interesting to me, so much so in fact, that I simply had to find their ‘source code’, so to speak. Y’see, even with systems this complex and transcendent, there’s always some kind of interface, a way to interact with the mechanisms that run it. All you gotta do,” she grinned maniacally, “is find it. ‘It’, in this case, being The Artifact. That’s capital T, capital A. It’s the physical protrusion of the omni-dimensional mechanism behind the Create Your Own Avatar system that ALL the various Patrons use to make magical servants! Found it down in Antartica, which, by the way, is where all the really cool stuff is on pretty much every worldline. Take it from someone who’s been to over ten thousand of ‘em. ANYWAY, by using this thing, I can create pretty much any kind of magical being I want, at least within the framework of rules I already mentioned. But still, that’s a LOT of potential options! In fact, it’s practically LIMITLESS, especially if you consider all the potential Oddball and Gifted combinations! And with your particularly helpful combination added to the mix, my creations will be optimized to their fullest possible extent! Nyahahaha!”

Kayli would tilt her head a bit. After a moment she would lean forward with some interest. "Have you created any magical girls with this thing yet?" She said while tapping her chin a bit. Clearly considering what Nykannis was telling her.

“Yeah, twenty-five of ‘em, but they’ve only been low-powered knockoffs at best,” she explained with a frown, before her maniacal grin returned. “At least, until I made The Prototype,” she added with a demented giggle.

"Hm." She thought about Hilde for a bit. "Sounds intriguing. Perhaps we could work on a project some time." She would muse.

“I could see that being very enjoyable,” Nykannis agreed.

"Anything in particular you need help on?" She would see if it was something more in her wheelhouse.

“Aside from what I just mentioned?” Nykannis asked. “Not much, although it would be really cool if you QUIT BEING SO EVASIVE AND TOLD ME EVERYTHING YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR MAGIC, but, yeah, other than that, I can’t think of anything else at the moment.”

“Well,” Kate cut in from where she was watching the snow fort battle through her camera, “If you two nerds are done swapping notes, this snowball fight is really startin’ to heat up!”

"Ah yes. It is a combination of magics. It would seem I was crafted in a way to serve such a purpose. Light and Reinforcement primarily, but psychically I can remove the mental afflictions. Friendship and some fate that awaits me guide my steps. To a degree I am the antithesis of dark and monster girls as I need not worry about the effects of corruption of a magical overload. It is a trait I intend to do more study on as I believe there are many that could benefit. But for now I may only offer my gift of purity personally. Obtaining resources to do otherwise without stipulation is hard to come by. I also cannot count that it might not be abused. You seem more as one to seek progress for progress' sake. A potentially treacherous path it would seem if you are here to avoid some consequence elsewhere. But I will reserve judgment on that until I have the chance to learn more of your work." She was somewhat wary of Nykannis, everything she'd picked up on so far told her that this girl was neither a friend nor foe in the traditional sense. It was entirely possible that she was getting into things that could cause great good or ill for all. While that was not really the kind of person she wanted to get tangled up with, if she didn't offer some kind of olive branch then there would be no chance to potentially get a closer look at the machinations at work here or this Artifact.

“I see, I see…” Nykannis nodded, completely ignoring Kate as Kayli finally revealed the combination of Specs, Powers, and Perks that granted her such fascinating abilities. “I believe those could be duplicated…” the mad scientist murmured as she seemed to run though the various calculations in her head. “Although if we go the surefire route, the power level will be slightly reduced, but that can be offset by a living battery… Yes… Yes… That would definitely do the trick!” she giggled, while rubbing her hands together with gleeful enthusiasm. Then Kayli mentioned wanting to see more of her work, which swiftly brought the mad scientist out of her maniacal reverie. “So, you wanna learn about my work, huh?” she asked, her eyes refocusing on the white-haired girl and narrowing considerably. “It’s some pretty top secret stuff,” the mad scientist explained. “As much as I might want to, I can’t go showing it off to just anyone. Hell, I’d probably get chewed out for telling you what I already have! Although…” she added with a grin. “If you were to join my R&D team, that would be a different story.” Nykannis was fairly certain a goodie two shoes like Kayli would never accept such an offer, but it would still be interesting to see how the girl chose to respond.

Kayli was silent for a moment but eventually replied, not completely dismissing the offer. ”To what end?”

“To assist with my work, of course!” Nykannis told her. “And to help improve humanity’s position in the magical community. Like I said earlier,” she continued, “my current employer is really into that stuff.”

"Well I will consider the offer. I'd like to get settled with things a bit before making any major decisions like that. I do sometimes get the feeling that my skills could be better utilized with less restriction." She would muse. It would likely resonate with a fellow colleague of the field.

“Well, you can be sure there aren’t any restrictions in my lab,” Nykannis grinned. “It’s UNLIMITED SCIENCE! Nyahaha! Although I can see why you might be hesitant,” she added. “You may have a thing for science, but you strike me as way more of a ‘help anyone in need’, ‘champion of the hopeless’ type, and you’ll definitely find more people who need saving in Penrose than in Silverburg, that’s for sure. Still, if you’re ever in town, stop by Demiris Defense Systems’ corporate headquarters and tell ‘em Doctor Kannis asked to see you. I’d be more than happy to chat again, especially if you’re willing to spill more of your secrets.”

Making a mental note Kayli will nod. ”Will do. And perhaps in the future there will be more to share. Penrose seems to have become something of a testing ground for oddities.” Since the major part of their talk was finished she would stand up.

“You can say that again,” Nykannis smirked as she glanced over to where the snow battle was playing out. “Well, I guess I’ll get back to watching the snowball fight and continue to lament the fact that I can’t dissect, I mean, study anyone here. It was actually kinda nice meeting you,” she added. “Even though you can be annoyingly evasive at times.”

"Most people like to know a little about a person before sharing. It's not that surprising. Enjoy your stay." She would make her way out and back down to the first floor so she could head outside.

“Sounds like that went fairly well,” Kate observed as Nykannis joined her at the edge of the balcony.

“Mmm,” the mad scientist agreed. “I’m 99.9888 percent sure she either knows, or is the one making those new types of COINS, but that information really isn’t all that important. I mean, it’s easy enough to give someone an Oddball: Coin Crafting Spec,” she added. “No, what REALLY interested me was that ability of hers to selectively remove detrimental traits, while leaving the beneficial ones intact. I hope I don’t need to tell you how helpful that would be with Phase Two. The only question is, how do I go about implementing it? I guess I could always just give someone Oddball: Gifted Purification and hope for the best, but I think I’m gonna try out the exact combination of Specs, Perks, and Powers our new friend Kayli has first.” She closed her eyes as a demented grin spread across her face. “There’s just so many glorious possibilities, and I simply can’t wait to get started…”

Connie was overjoyed when Oros told her that getting her present to Faith wouldn’t be difficult. “T-That’s great! T-Thanks Oros!” she told the pink-haired girl. “I j-just knew you’d be able to d-do it!” Her cheerfulness subsided slightly a moment later, when Oros asked about her own present. “O-Oh! U-Umm,” she mumbled as she nervously searched through her sack. “I-It’s r-right here!” the flustered girl added as she retrieved a rectangular package and handed it to Oros. “M-Merry Christmas!”

If the pink-haired girl chose to open it, she would find a sketchbook, along with a set of high quality colored pencils and a small landscape painting by Connie herself.

“I-I h-hope you l-like it…” the timid girl added softly.

A moment later, Connie yelped in alarm as the sound of a mighty thunderclap reverberated through the lodge. “W-W-What was t-that?!” she stammered, tightly clinging to Oros as she frantically looked around for anything dangerous. When nothing threatening seemed to be in evidence, Connie slowly began to calm down. “S-Sorry a-about t-that…” she apologized to Oros as she released the pink-haired girl. “I-It j-just r-really s-startled me…” she added, her face turning bright red.

As the weeks following their first official outing as Are Magi settled into a far less eventful pattern of schoolwork and free time, Dana found her initial exuberant enthusiasm diminishing a bit. The battle against the C-Class Void had felt like the very pinnacle of her young life. Now, she had been brought back down to earth, and forced to return to the monotony of a mundane existence. There was still magical and physical training, of course, but it was nothing like what they’d experienced during their first trial. For some reason the cheerful Norban simply couldn’t put her finger on, they just felt empty somehow, hollow…

Thinking back to the debriefing, which followed their test, Dana vividly remembered her answers to the stoic examiner’s various questions.

How did it feel to use your powers?

Great! It was really awesome to see just how much I can do now! I mean, can you imagine all the people I could help?!

Do you feel any different since your transformation?

Uh, not really? I mean, I’m still the same old me, but, um, I guess I feel more confident? Is that what you’re asking?

How did you feel about your encounter with the Void?

It was really intense! But also really cool! The other Voids were kinda weak, so I got rid of ‘em easy enough, but that last one was so powerful, we all needed to work together to defeat it! Workin’ alone is fine, and all, but good teamwork can overcome any challenge, so it was really nice for us to have a chance to develop that! After all, teamwork is what let us beat the First Void, and I just know that’s how we’re gonna take back the rest of the planet!

How do you feel your teammates performed?

They were amazing! Way more awesome than me, that’s for sure! I mean, yeah, they all got injured way worse than me, but that’s only because they’re all equipped for close combat, while I’ve got a gun, so, yeah, they’re gonna get banged up a lot more than me in fights, but… I’m kinda jealous of ‘em, y’know? I mean, they got to really prove what they were made of, gettin’ hurt, but workin’ through it to win in the end. I never had to deal with that, and, well, I’m not sure if I could take the kinda pounding they did and still come out on top…

Perhaps that was the reason, Dana mused after another week of studies had passed into the history books. She wanted to challenge herself further, to once again push her abilities to the limit, and then see if she could go even further. If she could overcome the limitations and weaknesses she knew all-to-well she possessed. Unfortunately, the only thing being challenged of late was her patience…

Thanks to a regrettable fight Penny had gotten herself into only a few days after their trial, Dana’s bespectacled roommate had been prohibited from leaving campus for several weeks, which made any off campus trips significantly less enjoyable. Thus, with the exception of a few feeble attempts, they had decided to postpone their explorations of Palmyra until after Penny’s incarceration had ended. Thankfully, tonight was that night, and Dana couldn’t wait to experience everything her new home had to offer, with all her new friends along for the ride.

“You girls ready for a tour of the town?” Penny asked as they packed up for the day. “‘Cause I know I am.”

“You bet I am!” Dana replied with her trademark grin. “And if I know Nicole, she’s already got a list of all the best places to visit!” she added, while playfully elbowing the red-headed Hastian. “Oh yeah! And we’ve got that fancy ball or whatever comin’ up!” the energetic Norban noted excitedly. “I don’t now about you, Penny, but I’ve never been to anything even remotely like that, so I really hope our resident fashion and high society experts can help me out!” she said, directing her attention to Nicole and Vanna.

Gaia continued to glare at the Lord of Change as the strange being gave its response, before turning her back to the creature and rejoining Connie and Shane.

“I do not believe we should entertain the twisted whims of this abominable creature,” she declared. “It clearly wishes to toy with our emotions, and I, for one, shall have no part of it,” the verdant girl added, stating that last bit in a louder tone, so that the Lord of Change would be sure to hear.

“B-But, Mia…!” Connie pleaded, her eyes filled with worry. “W-What if i-it’s the o-only way F-Faith can c-come? I r-really w-wanted to s-see her, a-and g-give her the p-present we m-made…”

“Connie…” Gaia sighed. “We don’t even know if we can trust what it says,” she added, placing a comforting hand on her friend's shoulder. “Even if we win its stupid game, it might just create a fake version of Faith, rather than reunite us with the real one.”

“I-I know…” Connie replied softy. “B-But, w-we can at l-least try, r-right? I-I mean, I w-want to b-believe that F-Faith’s still g-gonna m-make it, b-but, w-what if she d-doesn’t? W-What if t-this is the only w-way?”

Gaia frowned, before retrieving her phone and typing Faith’s name. “Okay, little sister,” she added, giving Connie a resigned smile. “I suppose we can give it a shot.”

“Oh, thank you, Mia!” Connie cheered, before quickly typing Faith’s name on her own phone as well.

“Well, I guess all we can do now is hope for the best,” Gaia observed after they had both sent in their votes.

A short while later, and it became clear that the best hadn’t happened. Although Gaia was somewhat glad that they would not have face the potential of dealing with some twisted facsimile of Faith, the verdant girl’s heart still ached for Connie.

“F-Faith wasn’t picked…” the timid girl sighed, her once-cheerful countenance taking on a significantly more sullen expression. “I g-guess we could just m-mail her present, b-but it w-won’t arrive until a-after N-New Years, a-and we d-don’t h-have her a-address…” at this point, Connie began to sob softly.

Seeing her best friend like this was enough to make Gaia want to punch the cause of Connie’s sorrow in the face. Repeatedly. And although she couldn’t actually harm the Lord of Change (in Dan’s dimension or anywhere else), she was determined to tell it some very choice words. Unfortunately, the moment she turned around, the twisted being winked out of existence.

Yeah, you better run, you fucking pile of shit.

Gaia’s withering glare became even more intense when she noticed that the creature hadn’t even bothered to take the plushy Mariette had given it.

What a dick

Gaia’s seething fury was interrupted a moment later when Connie gave an excited cry.

“Mia!” the gentle girl called, while pointing to the far side of the room. “I-It’s Oros! M-Maybe she can give our present to Faith!”

Oros… Gaia hissed, her anger having flared back to blazing life. The verdant girl’s mouth twisted into a snarl most unbefitting of the normally serene Daughter of Mother Earth as she followed Connie’s finger to where the pink-haired girl was sitting with two friends.

Gaia’s mind drifted back to the last time they had seen the obnoxious beast girl, when she had spent some time recovering in their room after suffering some kind of ambush. The ‘visit’ had gone well enough, but Oros’s departure had made such a racket, it had attracted the attention of a member of the orphanage’s staff, Ms. Bronson. When Ms. Bronson came up to their room to question them, Gaia had been forced to transform, sedate the woman, bring her outside, and place her under the same tree they had found Oros. Reassuming their mundane forms, she and Connie had then woken the woman up and told her a story about how they’d seen her pass out from their window. Although Ms. Bronson, having had her memory wiped by the same pollen used to sedate her, had thankfully accepted this story, dealing with her was still a major hassle for the two friends, and one that could have easily been averted if only Oros wasn’t such a monumental jackass.

At least as far as Gaia was concerned.

And now Connie was heading over to where that stupid bitch was sitting. Gaia wanted to stop her, or perhaps be with her for emotional support, but she ultimately decided against going over. Connie needed to start doing these things by herself, after all, and in her current mood, the verdant girl’s presence would probably do more harm than good. Not only that, but there was someone else who was far more deserving of her attention, someone she had been regretfully neglecting, up until now.

“So, Shane,” she said, turning to face her date. “How about we get some refreshments?”

“H-Hi Oros!” Connie greeted once she’d made her way over. “M-Merry Christmas! Oh! A-And is t-that you, Emily?!” she added, her eyes brightening at the sight of her other friend. “Y-You look s-so c-cute in that outfit, I a-almost d-didn’t recognize you! Umm,” she mumbled, as she retrieved a wrapped present from her sack. “I w-wanted to g-give this t-to Faith, b-but, I d-don’t t-think she’s c-coming, s-so, uh, c-could you g-give it t-to her w-when you s-see her n-next?” she asked Oros, handing the pink-haired girl the present. “I-It’s a s-special banana t-tree that M-Mia made,” she explained in a whisper, as if Faith herself might somehow overhear. “I-It’s k-kinda s-small, b-but it’ll g-grow a n-new banana as s-soon as you b-break o-one off. I k-know F-Faith really l-likes bananas, s-so, y-yeah…” Concluding her ramblings, she gave Oros a shy smile, her cheeks reddening from embarrassment.

“Wowie zowie~! Magical Dream Princess found Penny Wenney~! (giggle!)” MDP exclaimed upon being greeted by the mechanical monarch (although she didn’t look quite so mechanical at the moment). “Yaaay~! Like, Magical Dream Princess would totally wotally wuv to team up with you~! (giggle!)” she added, clapping her hands together excitedly.

The next moment, Amanda, who had apparently (and quite impressively) managed to hold on to her drink while being dragged outside, got a text from someone named Cerise. Upon asking who that was, MDP was told that she was one of Amanda’s friends who had since passed away. Subsequently, the whimsical girl learned of the game some crazy looking creature called the Lord of Change was playing, wherein one could be reunited with a friend or loved one, even if they had died. MDP herself had received a text from Karen, but although the tentacle girl gave great hugs, MDP felt it would be better for her best friend in the world to be reunited with someone she’d never get to see again otherwise. And so, despite Amanda’s initial objections, MDP had voted for Cerise, while Melisa had been kind enough to vote for the dream magician’s other friend, Cereza. (it should be noted that it was only thanks to Penny’s efforts that their small, unmoving, group wasn’t hit by any snowballs during this time)

When the winners were finally revealed, MDP gave Amanda a big hug. “Like, we did it, Pastel-chan~! (giggle!) Well, sorta…” she added, in a more sullen tone. “Like, Magical Dream Princess is super duper sorry that Cereza Weza couldn’t come too, but, like, at least Cerisey Wisey is heresie, so, like, you should go see her~! (giggle!) We’ll be okie dokie out heresie~!” she added, as she pushed Amanda in the direction of the lodge. “Just promise womise to have lots of fun together wether, okie dokie~?”

No sooner had Amanda departed, then Melisa noted that she wasn’t a big fan of snowball fights and instead would try and collect some snowbuns.

“Awww…” MDP pouted, somewhat sad to see the doll girl leave so soon. Quickly brightening, she added, “Like, that’s okie dokie~! This way, Magical Dream Princess can have Penny Wenny all to herselfy welfy~! (giggle!) Like, good luck, Melisa Wisa~!” the whimsical girl called as her diminutive friend rode off. “Magical Dream Princess hopes you find lots and lots~! (giggle!) Bye bye for nowie~!”

Twirling around, the whimsical girl cheerfully skipped over to where Penny was building her snow fort. Upon reaching the imposing edifice, she struck a coy pose, clasping her hands behind her back and swaying from side to side. “Like, can Magical Dream Princess pretty pretty please come insidey widey~?” she asked, smiling up at Penny as a blush colored her cheeks.

(And at some point after this, Hilaria and Other Justine apparently show up)

Shortly after Mariette had handed out her gifts to each member of their little group, a red-haired girl appeared before them in a puff a purple smoke. After welcoming them to the party, the girl presented them with a list of activities they could sign up for.

“O-Oh, wow!” Connie exclaimed, her eyes shimmering with excitement. “T-They all look like s-so much fun!”

“Then let us sign up for all of them,” Gaia proposed.

“Wowie zowie~! Magical Dream Princess wants to do them allsie, too~! (giggle!)” the whimsical girl added.

Scarcely a second later, Lily darted over to the small group. Moving with the speed of a lightning bolt, she cheerfully greeted and hugged each of them in turn, while also complementing their outfits. Connie was barely able to squeak out a simple “T-Thanks, Lily! A-And, M-Merry Christmas…!”, before the green-haired girl had zipped away to spread holiday cheer to the rest of the gathering.

“Wowie zowie~! (giggle!) She’s, like, super duper nicey wicey~!” MDP observed with a big smile. “Oh~!” she exclaimed when a cute jingle indicated that her phone had received a new text. After the whimsical girl had retrieved the device, she gave a happy squeal upon seeing who the message was from. “Goody woody~! (giggle!) Penny Wenny’s heresie weresie~!” she would announce with a cheerful smile, before frowning as she read the rest of the robotic girl’s message. “Awww, but she’s feeling grumpy wumpy~?”

'That’s okie dokie, Penny Wenny~!’ the whimsical girl would text back. ‘Magical Dream Princess will come find you firsty worsty, and cheer you aaall up~!’ After adding nearly a dozen cute emojis, she hit the send button.

“I-Is P-Penny o-one of y-your o-other friends?” Connie inquired.

“Yeperoonie~! (giggle!)” MDP replied. “But, like, she’s not just any wany friendy wendy,” the whimsical girl clarified with a wink. “She’s Magical Dream Princess’s super duper pretty witty wuvy dovey girlfriend wirlfriend~! (giggle!) And, like, there’s Magical Dream Princess’s super duper best friendy wendy in the whole wide worldsie~!” she squealed after catching sight of Amanda at the nearby refreshment table. “Pastel-chaaaan~!” she cheered as she glomped the dream magician (and possibly caused her to spill her drink). “Merry Werry Christmas~!” she added, finally releasing her friend and handing her a colorful present. “Like, this is Magical Dream Princess’s special wecial present wesent just for you~! (giggle!)”

Before Amanda could thank MDP for the gift, the hyperactive girl gave a sharp gasp as she caught sight of something occurring outside. “Wowie zowie~!” she exclaimed, her eyes shimmering with delight. “Like, they’re having a big snowball wowball fight out theresie~! (giggle!) Come on~!” she added, scooping up Melisa and her turtle, while grabbing Amanda’s hand and dragging her along, too. “Let’s go see if we can play with them~! (giggle!)”

Rushing outside, MDP didn’t stop until she had dragged her friends right into the middle of the wintery battleground. “Like, can Magical Dream Princess and her friendy wendies play, too~?!” the whimsical girl asked excitedly. “Can they~?! Can they~?! Can they~?!”

Meanwhile, back inside, Connie was looking around the crowded lodge to see if she could find anyone else she knew. The timid girl smiled upon catching sight of Ronin and Miko, as well as Rose and Iris, but there were other guests that made her quite a bit less happy, and actually quite a bit nervous. There was the boisterous, bearded man, for one, although his intimidating demeanor paled in comparison to the starkly terrifying entity that arrived next. Even though the strange being wore a Santa hat, Connie still felt very uncomfortable just looking at it. Then it began to speak. Connie didn’t really catch all of what it said, but she did hear something about being reunited with old friends, which reminded her of a rather disheartening fact. Despite having given her an invitation, Faith had yet to arrive at the party. Connie knew she was probably busy getting settled into her new home, but the timid girl had still hoped that her first friend in the magical community would be able to make at least a brief appearance. After all, she had brought a special present for her…

“M-Mia,” Connie asked her friend hesitantly. “D-Do you t-think Faith’s g-gonna come? I-I was h-hoping she’d b-be here by n-now, but…”

“Just give her a bit more time, little sister,” Gaia reassured her. “I know she will be here if it is at all possible for her to come.” A moment later, the verdant girl’s phone began to buzz. Retrieving it, she gave a small frown. “In fact, this appears to be her now,” she noted as she read over a text from Faith, wishing them a Merry Christmas. “Although I could have sworn I left this phone back in our room…”

“O-Oh my gosh!” Connie gasped as she looked at a message displayed on her own phone. “I-I j-just g-got a t-text from L-Lotus! B-B-But, L-Lotus is…” her voice trailed off as her hands began trembling even more than usual.

“Something very strange is going on here,” Gaia observed as she fixed the newly arrived being with a piercing gaze. “And I plan on getting to the bottom of it.”

Gliding over to the bizarre creature, the verdant girl was about to ask it some rather pointed questions, when a cheerful voice interrupted. It appeared as though Dan had finally decided to make his grand entrance, and after doing so, he dramatically announced the start of yet another activity. Gaia, however, was not about to be sidetracked by the whimsical dolphin, and pressed on undaunted. “Excuse me,” she said, addressing the Lord of Change. “Am I to assume you were the one who sent those texts to our phones just now? And just how, precisely, do you intend to reunite us with friends who have passed on from this life?” she added, her expression providing a clear indication that she was in no mood for games.

Dana grinned when she saw Nicole enter. She was glad that the red-head seemed to be mending well, or well enough to lay across the top of a couch at any rate. The Hastian went on to give Dana a playful poke before complementing her performance in the earlier battle.

“Thanks, Nicole,” Dana replied, tilting her head back to smile up at her teammate. “And if we’re talkin’ about giant robots, I’m happy as long as I get to fire the big, shoulder-mounted cannons! We are gonna have shoulder-mounted cannons, right?” she asked in mock seriousness.

Nicole proceeded to inquire about when the other teams were attacked by their own surprise Voids, which garnered an interesting variety of responses. In particular, Priya’s team didn’t even get to finish all of their tests, which went some way towards disproving Penny's idea that there was a conspiracy at work, at least as far as Dana was concerned. Priya then went on to describe her Gladius, and Dana couldn’t help but share her excitement as she listened with rapt interest. At least, until Cara spoke up, mentioning that her team's tests occurred without any unplanned interruptions.

She almost sounds disappointed… Dana thought. Then again, I’d probably feel the same way if we missed out. After all, fighting that thing was pretty awesome! The energetic Norban grinned as she thought of how well they’d worked together to defeat their bonus adversary.

That grin only broadened with the mention of off-campus food.

“I’d love to go get some pizza with you guys!” Dana declared in her typical upbeat tone. “Nothin’ against cafeteria food, but ya just can’t beat a good pizza, especially when shared with friends!”

Part II

✩✩✩Last time on The Dream Team- Thanks to Violet’s help, Amanda was finally able to reunite with her twin brother, Aiden. As it turned out, their reunion didn’t happen a moment too soon, as Aiden was investigating a strange phenomenon that was undoubtedly magical in nature. Arriving at what he believed was the phenomenon’s source, Aiden and the girls soon discovered the terrifying culprit- an eldritch monstrosity calling itself The Eater of Dreams! Even with all their vast mystic power, can Violet and Amanda hope to triumph against a foe such as this?!

Read on, and find out!✩✩✩

As the malign creature spoke, all three could feel their desire to either escape or fight being rapidly drained away. Indeed, their very limbs seemed to be sapped of all strength, such that they could barely stand.

“A-Amanda,” Violet gasped, her voice weak. “W-We… h-have to… t-transform…”

Amanda had begun to panic as their strength sapped away, but as she looked at Violet and Aiden, that panic turned to rage. How could she have missed a discovery like this?! And to put her own brother in danger! What if she wasn't there in time? What if...?

"G-God damnit!" Amanda yelled out, using every ounce of willpower to stumble forward and grab Violet's hand. She snarled at the monster they faced. I-I am not...going to die t-to some PATHETIC INSECT!!" She casted her hand out, and bellowed, "May my sweetest dreams...be your endless nightmares!!!"

Squeezing her friend’s hand with all the meager strength she had left, Violet began her own incantation. “H-Hearts… C-Candy,” the heiress intoned, more and more of her strength seeming to return with each word she spoke. “Sparkles, and Balloons~! Sunshine, Glitter, Unicorns, and Rainbows~! Taaa daaa~! Magical Girl Super Cute Pretty Pretty Magical Dream Princess is here~! (giggle!)” the whimsical magical girl declared, striking a cute pose, before pointing her wand at the arachnid monstrosity looming over them. “Like, you did a super duper meanie weanie thingie wingie, taking this whole towny wowny’s hopes and dreams away! So, like, Pastel-chan and Magical Dream Princess are totally wotally gonna make you go bye bye nowie~! (giggle!)” Her wand glowing with power, MDP used the mystic implement to draw a glowing pink heart in the air in front of her. “With all her hope, wuv, and dreams, Magical Dream Heart Rainbow Beam~!” With that, a mighty heart-shaped blast of prismatic power shot forth from MDP’s glowing wand and slammed into the arachnid horror with all the force of ten thousand freight trains. Predictably, while the attack definitely seemed to have injured the creature, it was still very much in the fight. “Okie dokie, Pastel-chan~!” the whimsical girl called to her friend. “It’s your turny wurny, nowie~! (giggle!)”

Amanda's anger didn't seem to fade once transformed. "You'll pay for your crimes, you insolent vermin!!" Her spellbook rapidly flipped through pages on it's own, summoning a giant bird to attack the Eater of Dreams; akin to a phoenix with it's purple flames. With the big fella stalled, Amanda would turn her attention to the smaller spiders, rapidly firing crystals at them.

“Like, that was sooo super duper cool, Pastel-chan~! (giggle!)” MDP told her friend with a gleeful smile. “Like, Magical Dream Princess will helpy welpy get rid of all those icky wicky little wittle spider widers~!” With a wave of her wand, she conjured an array of glowing stars, which went to work zapping the smaller spiders with dazzling beams of light, causing them to explode in showers of colorful glitter. “Sooo pretty~! (giggle!)” The childish magical girl cheered as she watched her creations eliminate the lesser minions.

Unsurprisingly, the Eater of Dreams didn’t share her appreciation, and the arachnid monstrosity unleashed a nightmarish shriek of fury at the insolence of the two magical girls. “Feeble CHILDREN! You DARE to DEFY the Eater of Dreams?! I shall FEAST upon your pathetic creations! Then you shall KNOW your folly and SUBMIT to my power!” Opening its dreadful maw even wider, the eldritch abomination began to suck the dream magic into that baleful orifice with terrifying force. Amanda and MDP would soon see that their rainbow beams and mythic birds were swiftly unraveling into strands of spectral, purplish energy, which the Eater of Dreams now set about consuming with great vigor. Meanwhile, translucent tendrils of mystic energy spilled out of its spindly fingers to wrap around the stars and crystals, cocooning them in thick webs, before shrinking them down to nothing. “Submit, foolish children! Your PITIFUL powers are no more than a BANQUET for the Eater of Dreams!”

“Golly wolly!” MDP exclaimed. “That meanie weanie really can eat dreamy weamies! Like, we need to thinky winky up a special weical plany wany to stopy wopy him! Heresie~!” she added, dipping her wand into a colorful bottle she’d just conjured. “Magical Dream Princess’s super duper strong bubble wubbles of wuv will give us some timey wimey to do that~! (giggle!)”

Holding the wand up to her lips, she blew a series of large, heart-shaped bubbles, which floated towards the Eater of Dreams. Merging together, and fully enveloping the eldritch creature, they would halt its consumption of the other dream constructs. Unlike those previous manifestations of dream magic, the bubble didn’t seem quite as susceptible to the horror’s ravenous appetite. Although it was still slowly being syphoned away into the creature’s insatiable maw, the bubble seemed capable of confining its captive for at least a short time.

“Okie dokie~!” MDP declared, striking a dramatic pose. “So, like, since this meanie weanie can eat dreamy weamies, Magical Dream Princess thinkie winkies we should make the most super duper sweetest weetest dreamy weamy ever wever, and, like, when that meanie weanie tries to eat it, it’ll be sooo super duper sweety weety, he won’t be able to handle wandle it, and it’ll totally wotally make him explody wodey~! (giggle!) Like, come on Pastel-chan~! (giggle!)” she cheered, taking Amanda’s hand. “Like, you can helpy welpy too, Aiden Waiden~!” she added, grabbing the stunned journalist’s hand as well. “Like, it’s super duper easy peasy~! All you have to do is think of your sweetest weetest dreamy weamy, and Pastel-chan and Magical Dream Princess will totally wotally make it come true~! (giggle!)”

Aiden chuckled out of fear. "How the hell is that supposed to work?!"

"Just shut up and focus already!" Amanda snapped back at her brother. With the elder twin silenced, they both focused on thinking of the most important dreams they had.

While the two siblings concentrated, MDP focused their happy thoughts into her Wand of Sweetest Dreams, supercharging it with magical power. As the mystic implement floated in midair before them, it seemed to shatter reality with rays of prismatic brilliance.

“Okie dokie~! (giggle!)” MDP announced. “Here~! We~! Gooo~! With all our hope, wuv, and dreams, this is Aiden Waiden, Pastel-chan, and Magical Dream Princess’s Super Duper Sweety Weety Magical Wagcial Dreamy Weamy Barrier Warrier~! We really, really hope you enjoy it~! (giggle!)” she added with a playful wink.

With a spectacular burst of Dream Magic, a whimsical pocket dimension swirled into being around them, with the Eater of Dreams at its center. Unlike pervious iterations, this one was informed not only by the dreams of MDP, but those of Amanda and Aiden as well. Thus, it was far stronger than what MDP could ever manage to create on her own. Seeing the feast spread out before it, the Eater of Dreams wasted no time in attempting to consume it, but, as MDP had hoped, the eldritch monstrosity soon encountered a problem…

“Such LOVE! Such HOPE! Such JOY! So bRiGhT! So ViVId! I-It is tOo sTrOng!” the creature screamed, its horrific form seeming to bulge and warp in response to the staggering power flooding into it. “It iS mUch tOo sTrOnG!”

“Oh~! Would you like moresie~?! (giggle!)” MDP asked with a cheerful and incredibly innocent smile. “Like, heresie~! Magical Dream Princess totally wotally has a super duper special wecial treat just for you~! Super Duper Deluge of Cuteness~! (giggle!)” With that, the bubbly girl unleashed a massive Barrage of Dream Magic, the swirling, sparkling torrent forming a dizzying array of whimsical creatures and objects, which thoroughly overwhelmed what little resistance the Eater of Dreams still possessed. Giving voice to an anguished screech, the eldritch monstrosity shuddered under the unrelenting assault, before violently bursting apart in a spray of candy and glitter.

“Yaaay~!” MDP cheered as she wrapped Aiden and Amanda up in a big hug. “We did it~! (giggle!) We, like, totally wotally did it~!”

Amanda nearly collapsed once hugged. "This is why I avoid battles..." She tiredly stated. Aiden lightly sneezing from the glitter reminded her that she had alot to explain to the dumbfounded journalist.

"Oh, right. Let's just...clean up and get out of here. I'll explain everything."

“Okie dokie~! (giggle!)” MDP replied with a playful salute. An instant later, however, her body started to tremble as the exhaustion generated from going all-out with her magic finally hit her like a speeding truck. “B-But, like, Magical Dream Princess thinky winkies she’s gonna need a nappy wappy time first~” she added in a sleepy voice, before changing back into Violet and slumping against Amanda.

"Oi!" Amanda wrapped her arms around Violet to catch her, transforming back to her normal self as well. "...Sorry for dragging you into that, Aiden." She apologized to her brother. "If that thing somehow killed you,"

"Didn't even get the chance, whatever that was! If you two somehow managed to overwhelm something like that, just, what are you?!" Aiden's curiously ecstatic expression betrayed any hostility she assumed he had. "And more importantly, is Violet okay? Do you need help with her?"

"Nah, she's just tired." Amanda carefully picked the other girl up. "Let's get outta here."

✩✩✩

Shortly after returning to the bed and breakfast, a groggy Violet finally awakened from her nap. “Mmm… That was certainly refreshing,” the heiress noted with a satisfied smile as she stretched herself out. “I apologize for making you carry me back here,” she told Amanda. “Using so much of my magic can be rather exhausting,” the heiress explained. “I know it couldn’t be helped, but I still feel bad about inconveniencing you like this.” Upon noticing that Aiden was with them, Violet gave a small gasp. “Um, how much of what happened does he remember?” she whispered.

"I uh...may have told him the truth." Amanda nervously grinned.

"I owe an old colleague of mine five dollars now." Somehow, Aiden seemed okay with it.

“I… see…” Violet replied, a slight blush beginning to color her cheeks. Giving voice to a weary sigh, she added, “Aiden? I trust that you will not tell anyone what you saw today. I know that it is asking a great deal, especially of someone in your profession, but please try to forget what happened at the theater. Things would not bode well for any of us if it were to become public knowledge.”

"You kiddin?! I'm not gonna be able to forget the fact that we killed Pennywise back there, but I ain't one to blabber easy! Rest assured, your secret's safe with me." Aiden reassured Violet. "But you and this Maura lady better keep Ames safe. Heard things went downhill back in Penrose, and I don't want her getting screwed over."

“You have my word,” Violet told him. “I would be a truly terrible best friend if I allowed anything to happen to her. And thank you,” she added, giving him a sincere smile. “If you are anything like your sister, then I know I have absolutely nothing to worry about.”

"Yeah yeah, I'll behave when we get back to town. Hey, call me if anything else happens, okay?" Amanda shrugged at Aiden.

"Got it. Say, if that news outlet you mentioned got abandoned, think I could take over?"

"Don't push it. Maybe if you end up a magical boy, you could try, but still."

Violet couldn’t help but grin at the siblings’ playful sniping. “If anything, I think you would be an excellent choice for such a position, Amanda,” the heiress told her friend. “And I’d be only too happy to support you, if you wished to take on such a responsibility,” she added. “After all, my illustrious great-grandfather once owned a very successful newspaper, and I believe I would very much enjoy trying my hand at doing the same.”

"....Oh wait, you're serious?" Amanda looked at Violet in surprise. "I mean- I'm not sure if they'd trust someone like me more than the last girl. Then again, she did commit mass genocide. Don't ask."

“Well, I trust you,” Violet replied, letting the topic of mass genocide go unaddressed for the moment. “And I believe that’s what matters most. Besides,” she added. “It’s not like I would have you run the Independent itself. I was thinking of a new agency, one which would put that mediocre gossip rag to shame.”

Amanda thought for a second. "Well, if you think we can do it..." She then nodded with a smile. "Yeah. Yeah, let's do it!"

“Excellent,” Violet smiled. “Well, then, if that’s everything, I believe we should probably be going now. It was a pleasure to meet you, Aiden,” she added, shaking the young journalist’s hand. “And I am so very glad that I was able to help you and Amanda finally reunite.”

After the siblings had finished saying their farewells, Violet and Amanda boarded the heiress’s jet for the flight back to Penrose.

“All right, Amanda,” Violet said as they took their seats. “Now that it’s just the two of us, what’s all this about mass genocide?”

“Would you care for some tea, Amanda?” Violet asked her friend as she took a porcelain teacup and saucer from the serving tray mounted atop their robotic flight attendant. “Or perhaps you’d like a different beverage, or possibly some light snacks?”

They were currently traveling aboard the heiress’s private jet, on their way to a meeting with Amanda’s twin brother, whose location Violet had recently discovered. A fully automated craft, the jet was a one-of-a-kind creation, constructed by Covington Industries for the express purpose of serving as it’s CEO’s primary conveyance. As a symbol of CI’s technological prowess, it contained every state of the art system and convenience one could imagine, all to allure potential clients and intimidate potential rivals. To Violet, traveling aboard such a pinnacle of engineering was nothing unusual, but the same probably could not be said of her companion…

"Hm? Oh, I'm not much of a tea person, used to run on coffee during late work hours. But snacks sound good!" Amanda chuckled, turning back to look out the window. There seemed to be a glimpse of curiosity in her eye. "You know, I haven't traveled by plane since I became a magical girl. Once I got the hang of my magic I just used stuff like my pocket dimention to get around." she confided to Violet, crossing her legs in thought. "There were barely any cases that required me to go overseas and such, and what with Penrose's condition, well, I had to stay there for the long run, for everyone's sake." Amanda flinched, realizing that she might have soured the mood, then looked back to Violet in embarassment.

"Uh, sorry for rambling! I hadn't had the time to clear my thoughts so..."

“No need to apologize,” Violet said with a giggle. “We are best friends, and confiding in each other is what best friends do. Or so I am told,” she added with a slightly embarrassed smile.

Meanwhile, the small serving robot rolled away to fetch some snacks, after Amanda requested them.

“A-And on the subject of confiding,” the heiress added in a more concerned tone. “I trust you recall that text I sent you the other day? About there being something I needed to tell you, but only face to face? W-Well,” she continued, while gazing down into her now trembling teacup. “Remember how I said that the name ‘Ebon Mint’ seemed familiar back at the Sanctuary? The reason for that is because… W-Well… I once made a deal with them, back before I became a magical girl,” the heiress revealed, her words pouring forth at a rapid pace, as if simply saying them caused her great pain. “My father was being magically attacked,” she explained, “and I needed to discover the culprit. But as you can probably surmise, even my resources were woefully unsuited to the task. That’s when the Mint approached me and offered their assistance. Having no other option, and not knowing how truly vile they were, I accepted their offer. It seemed just like any other business deal at the time, but now, after witnessing first hand what they did to Penny’s Sanctuary, I find myself horrified that I ever associated with them. A-And I’ve been so afraid that I would lose all of my new friends because of that one stupid mistake! A-Amanda,” Violet said tentatively as she looked up at her friend for the first time since she’d begun talking. “Please forgive me for being so foolish,” she pleaded, taking Amanda’s hands into her own as tears began to well up. “Your friendship means the world to me. I-I wouldn’t want anything to come between us, which is why I wanted to tell you this myself. You were my first friend, Amanda, my best friend, and you deserve to know the truth, no matter how agonizing it is for me to say it.”

As much as Amanda wanted to scold her for conspiring with the Mint, she understood where Violet was coming from. There wasn't a point in getting angry, especially since she genuinely seemed regretful. "Hey, it's okay." she softly reassured Violet, wiping away any tears on the other girl's face. "You didn't know, and you had good intentions. Honestly, I should've given you the run down on patrons sooner. Just, be careful if you have to work with them again, alright? And if they give you a black coin, don't use it. It's bad juju." the punkish girl smiled.

“Thank you, Amanda,” Violet whispered, while giving her friend a warm smile. “Hearing you say that makes me happier than I could ever put into words. And I do not believe they shall be offering me magical coins anytime soon,” she added. “As far as they know, I am simply a mundane young woman. Albeit a mundane young woman who just so happens to be the heiress of the world’s largest megacorporation… And that is where I may have some problems…” she confessed with a sigh. “As payment for their assistance, I agreed to let them make limited use of CI facilities and equipment. I have no idea what they intend to use them for, and I dread to think of the possibilities, but I promise that you shall be the first to know as soon I learn anything. If nothing else, perhaps I can provide you with insight on what they are planning. An inside agent, of sorts.”

Amanda leaned back in her chair. "I dunno, what if they catch wind and tried to hurt you?" she crossed her arms, appearing concerned. "Then again, as long as you're not a bigger threat than their main targets; whoever they are, it could work."

“I imagine things would be worse if I decided not to uphold my end of the agreement,” Violet pointed out. “But I understand your concern. In fact, I feel the same way, which is why I had my R&D team create a solution,” she explained, producing a pair of incredibly thin rectangles from a compartment in the arm of her chair. “These are state of the art pocket computers, the only two of their kind. Think of them as smartphones on steroids. They’re linked together via an encrypted signal, so any transmissions should be impossible to intercept. If I find out any information on Mint related activities, I’ll send it to you via this. How does that sound?”

"Woah." Between the reveal and explanation, Amanda's eyes widened with curiosity. She then grinned. "Sounds perfect!"

With such heavy matters out of the way, the two friends’ discussion returned to lighter topics. So things continued, until an artificial voice announced, “We have arrived at our destination, Miss Covington. Please fasten your safety belts and prepare for landing.”

The advanced VTOL aircraft would set down in a small clearing next to a quaint bed and breakfast, located on the rural outskirts of the town of Locke’s Hollow. It was here that Violet’s sources said that Amanda’s twin brother was currently residing. Despite the fact that it more closely resembled something out of a science fiction movie than a conventional aircraft, Violet’s jet seemed to garner no more attention from the locals than if a bird had landed on a fence post. Indeed, as they made their way inside, Violet and Amanda would notice that none of the other people present seemed to pay them any mind whatsoever. Somewhat odd, to be sure, especially for such an incongruous pair as an elegantly attired heiress and a punk girl. Walking up to the front desk, Violet broke the eerie silence by ringing a small bell on the counter.

“Excuse me,” she stated in a slightly colder tone than the one she used with Amanda. “We were told that Aiden Valentine was lodging here. Would you be so kind as to tell us what room he’s staying in?”

Finally deciding to acknowledge their existence, the dead-eyed woman behind the counter slowly turned her head to face the two young ladies. “Turtle Room,” she said with a weary sigh, after consulting a dusty binder. “Second floor, second door on the right.”

“How dreadfully inhospitable…” Violet muttered as they ascended the stairs. “Although I suppose I shouldn’t expect much from such peasants.” Realizing what she had just said, the heiress gave a small gasp, before turning to Amanda. “I am so sorry, Amanda!” she told her friend contritely. “I said that without thinking.”

Amanda shrugged, hands in her pockets. "Hey, I get what you meant. Some people are jerks. Then again the lady probably has poor work hours if she's tired at this hour. If that helps her case, hell if I know, but people tend to be grumpy when they're tired." she slightly grimaced.

“Still, it was wrong of me to be so needlessly arrogant,” Violet replied. “It is something I am trying to very hard work on, albeit with limited results thus far…”

Stopping at the second door on the right, they would notice that a hand carved wooden turtle had been nailed to it. It was intricately detailed, to a truly impressive degree, and with its realistic paint job, one might be forgiven for mistaking it for a live specimen. Were it not for the fact that it was nailed to a door, of course…

“Well, then,” Violet announced, while giving her friend a reassuring smile. “It appears this is the moment of truth. Are you ready?”

Amanda took a deep breath. "Right, let's do this."

Knocking on the door, Violet would call, “Aiden? It’s Violet Covington. We spoke on the phone yesterday. As promised, I have Amanda here with me. May we come in?”

"Eh? Oh, just a second!" A voice could be heard from inside the room, footsteps approaching the door before it was unlocked and opened.

"Right this way, Miss Violet. And...Ames..." Aiden stepped aside, letting the two step inside. Amanda could only shrug back, feeling just as awkward as him.

“Thank you, Aiden,” Violet told him with a polite smile. “I understand if this is somewhat awkward, but please allow me to explain. I regret to say that I am the one responsible for Amanda’s current condition,” Violet continued. “You see, Amanda was covering the initial testing of a prototype cellular rejuvenation technology being developed by Covington Industries. Unfortunately, there was a small accident, and Amanda was exposed to a concentrated dose of rejuvenation energy, leaving her in her current, youthful state. Since then, my research team and I have been trying to find a way to reverse the process. However, we have yet to meet with any success. Understandably, we wanted to keep the entire situation under wraps, but after I learned that Amanda had a twin brother, with whom she shared a particularly close bond, I decided it would be best to reveal the truth to you, at the very least. I can only imagine how worried you must have been,” Violet told him in a sullen tone. “Please forgive me for perpetuating this deception for as long as I have. It was wrong of me to put my company’s reputation ahead of your emotional wellbeing.”

"Uh, wow." Dumbfounded, Aiden scratch the back of his neck. "That's...alot to take in. I guess that explains why Ames hasn't been calling me, but I'd never know the day I hear about some sort of rejuvination experiment." He glanced to Amanda. "I mean, there was that one case with illegal cloning methods, so I can't exactly rule it out." He stepped over to give his sister a side hug.

"Sorry for dissapearing, Aiden." Amanda frowned. Not only cause she ditched him, she didn't like lying to him like that. "I wanted to get in contact with you when I'm back to normal, but nothing worked."

Aiden ruffled her hair with a smile. "Well you're still alive, aren't you? No harm done! Beside, I get to be the big sibling now." His smile turned smug with a chuckle, earning an elbow to the side from the smaller twin.

Thankful that Aiden seemed to accept her story, Violet allowed the two siblings to catch up, while she took a closer look at the room Aiden was staying in. True to its name, the Turtle Room was filled with instances of its namesake animal, with depictions of turtles on the curtains and bed sheets, a turtle clock, turtle lamp shades, and even turtle-shaped pillows. And that wasn’t counting the various carved and sculpted turtles scattered about the room on tables and nightstands. Like the specimen on the door, these were all intricately detailed, and Violet couldn’t help but be impressed by the skill their creators must have possessed. “Such exquisite craftsmanship,” the heiress murmured as she carefully examined each piece. “I cannot even begin to imagine the time and effort that went in to making all of these.”

“Yeah, this town was pretty big into arts and crafts,” Aiden replied. “In fact, it was something of a hot spot for any kind of artistic expression. Amateur musicians, painters, theater troupes, you name it, this place had it.”

“Had?” Violet asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Yeah…” Aiden replied, his countenance taking on a troubled expression. “Like Ames, I’m a journalist,” he explained. “And the reason I’m here is because, about a month ago, this place was hit with a strange epidemic of overwhelming apathy and hopelessness. It’s as if some sort of unnatural malaise has enveloped the whole town, sapping everyone’s motivation, ambition, and aspirations. Heck, there have even been reports of people falling into comas and dying, simply because they lacked the will to live. I know it sounds crazy, but I’m sure both of you have noticed it, even in your short time here.”

“We have,” Violet confirmed, remembering the nearly lifeless woman at the check-in counter. “What do you suppose is causing it?”

“I don’t know for sure,” Aiden conceded. “But I do have a hunch. The last play to be performed before this whole thing started supposedly featured a very unusual prop. It was described to me as almost resembling an egg, but it glowed with a sickly light, which made it painful to look at. It’s not a lot to go on, but it’s all I have. That’s why I was planning on heading over to the theater this afternoon to see if the prop’s still there, and maybe figure out what the heck it is. You two wanna come with?”

“I would love to,” Violet said without any hesitation. “As you might expect, I do not get out of the office much, and I have always been fascinated by a good mystery.”

"Well shit, can't have you going out without me, right?" Amanda would hurry over to the two with a grin.

Piling into Aiden’s car, the trio set out to investigate the journalist’s bizarre hunch. As it was located in the heart of Locke’s Hollow, the drive to the Davenwood Theater provided ample evidence of just how much the veil of apathy had affected the town. Nearly every business was closed, no one walked or drove the streets, and the grey, winter’s day only added to the dismal atmosphere. The theater itself was an old, monolithic structure, one which instilled a sense of foreboding as they approached. That unsettling feeling only grew stronger as they made their way through the building’s darkened interior, the beams of their flashlights illuminating far more cobwebs than one might expect to find in a place abandoned only a month prior. No spiders could be seen, however, nor could the chattering of insects or rats be heard as they fled the flashlights’ golden beams. It was as if they, too, had succumbed to the malaise gripping the town. But the webs continued to be in evidence, no matter where the three investigators explored. Indeed, they only grew more prevalent as the trio neared the door leading backstage. Upon closer inspection, the webs appeared to shimmer and, if one watched for long enough, almost seemed to fade in and out of reality.

“Come into my parlor,” Aiden said with a small chuckle. “I hope you’re not afraid of spiders, Violet,” he added with a grin.

“Of course not,” the heiress snapped in a far harsher manner than she’d intended. “I am not some easily frighted child,” she added, although it almost sounded like she was trying to convince herself as well. “How are you holding up, Amanda?” she asked her friend. “And what do you make of these webs?” she whispered, so Aiden wouldn’t hear.

"Jeez, no one even attempted to clean this place?" Amanda grimaced at the sight of the webs, on guard in case something tried to attack them. Though it seemed she was just tense. "Definitely magic in nature. May need to do a little pest extermination if this place isn't really abandoned." she whispered back to Violet.

“I thought the same,” Violet agreed, fully prepared to eliminate whatever threat they happened to find, no matter how horrific or powerful it might be.

“Okay, moment of truth,” Aiden announced as he reached the backstage door. “I don’t know what we’re gonna find on the other side, but be prepared to run if things turn nasty.”

Once Violet and Amanda had provided their acknowledgement, he carefully opened the old, web-covered door. What lay beyond was enough to cause all three investigators to give voice to a startled gasp. Illuminated by a faint, purplish glow, an enormous eldritch arachnid creature, sat in an equally massive web at the center of the room, surrounded by dozens of smaller semi-translucent spiders. Instantly becoming aware of the three intruders, the horrific monstrosity turned its elongated head to face them, its vertical maw glowing with dark power.

“Foolish mortal CHILDREN!” its unnatural voice bellowed, each syllable seeming to claw at the inside of their minds. “How is it you INTRUDE upon this SANCTUM?! How is it you STILL possess the motivation to journey here?! Your thoughts so SHARP, your spirits so BRIGHT! How were they MISSED?! No matter…” the monstrosity added after a moment. “Like ALL the others, you TOO, shall become DULL and DARK, for none can resist...

It was at Valkyrie’s home. A proper little house, apparently, located somewhere in Penrose. Valkyrie had left to the Overcity for a time, but allowed Deni and Eli to settle down inside her home to ensure it wasn’t unoccupied during her absence. Which made it a great, completely free house of residence for the two to live within and form new memories! They’d invited new friends, so the two were taking the time to make a lemon curd tart to serve to their friends! Deni had taken to baking during her stay in Penrose since she came back, and Eli was more than happy to help out! They were probably doing that, when…

“Umm, R-Ronin?” a hesitant voice called out after a brief knock on the door. “I-It’s us, C-Connie and Mia! M-May we c-come in?”

Deni smiled, nodded to Eli who stayed in the kitchen, and then skipped towards the door. She was still transformed, because being seen untransformed could cause a problem, yet, she didn’t look like she had the previous time they’d met. ‘Absolutely! Come on in! I warn, I look a little different, but it’s still me!’ she said, opening the door for them and letting them see her new look. It was still asian-inspired, but she was now 11 instead of 7, and the attire was shorter and blue instead. The effects of a Red Coin, she briefly wondered if her friends knew of those.

“O-Oh, wow!” Connie exclaimed at how her friend had changed. “W-Were you j-just disguised b-before, a-and this is how you r-really look?” she asked.

“Whatever the case, you look good!” Mia complemented. “I love the new color palette.”

Deni smirked at Connie’s exclamation. Right, time to be Ronin. ‘Thanks! But, nope! This is how I look now. You know what a Red Coin is? Well, I used one! I had a special reason to!’ she said, skipping back. ‘C’mon, let’s go to the kitchen!’

“Uh, n-no, I-I’ve n-never heard of R-Red Coins before,” Connie admitted. “B-But if e-everything’s all right, t-then I g-guess it’s f-fine?” she added, still a little unsure of why her friend would need to make use of such a thing.

“Yeah, we were kinda worried when you didn’t come through the portal to Dan’s place with us,” Mia added. “Did ya get everything sorted out?”

Ronin smirked. ‘Yeah, I did.’ She kept her sentence short, because she knew she had more to explain later.

“I-Is t-this your home, Ronin?” Connie asked as their friend led them to the kitchen. “I-It’s r-really nice.”

‘It actually belongs to a friend of mine called Valkyrie. She’s off in the Overcity right now, but she’s letting me borrow it!’ Ronin said, and then they turned and entered the kitchen, where…

Someone had been baking for them. Specifically, a rather large lemon curd tart had been prepared, and someone who looked a lot like Ronin was placing it on the table with a couple plates, wearing a red longer attire, giving them a smile as they came in. ‘Welcome, Mia, Connie. Make yourselves at home,’ she said, just smiling for now, and Ronin kept a close look at the reactions of her friends.

Upon catching sight of Eli, Connie gave a small gasp of surprise, not expecting anyone else to be here. “Oh! Umm, h-hello,” Connie told her, while holding up her hand and giving a shaky wave. “A-And t-thank you,” she added with a smile as she sat down.

“Yeah, thanks for havin’ us!” Mia said with a grin. “So, I guess you're one of Ronin’s friends, huh? Or maybe a relative?” she added thoughtfully, after noting the strong resemblance between the two.

‘I am. I’m her sister. You may… call me Miko. I apologize about not using our real names, there’s some people that’d hunt us down if they knew our real names, so we want to keep those under as much wraps as possible,’ the apparently newly named Miko said.

‘Haha, didn’t you say that Miko didn’t fit because you had no spirit specialization?’ Ronin asked, chuckling a bit.

‘Eh, it’s short and sweet,’ Miko said, shrugging. Ronin skipped to beside Miko.

‘So, we’d like to extend our thanks that you came to help me try to save Mariette. I… didn’t tell you, but I was also on a quest to save my sister. I’m sorry about that. But now, I am in your debt! Thank you… so much!’ Ronin said, bowing down deeply.

‘It’s partly thanks to you that I’m free now. Not only that, but we managed to remove Mariette’s brainwashing. We want that to be kept a secret, too, don’t go telling people about that. But now, Mariette can escape on her own when she wants to. You helped with that, too. Thank you, so much for helping my sister!’ Miko bowed to them too, both sisters bowing to them with gratitude.

“I-It’s v-very nice to m-meet you,” Connie told Miko after the later had introduced herself.

“Likewise,” Mia grinned, glad to see that her suspicions of a family resemblance had been proven correct. “And don’t worry about the name thing,” she added. “It’s totally understandable. I mean, I usually don’t go around advertising my true identity when I’m out doing magical girl stuff, either. Heck, some people even go so far as to adopt a whole new personality, though I can see why you might not wanna take things that far.”

Then the two sisters thanked them for their help, and Connie felt a blush color her cheeks. “O-Oh! U-Umm, y-you’re v-very welcome! A-And I’m s-so glad to hear that!” she added, giving the twins a big smile.

“Yeah,” Mia agreed. “We’re just happy we could help. Seein’ you two together like this is all the thanks we need.”

‘You followed me into a death-trap of a mansion to help. You can tell me that’s all you need, but I am going to be forever willing to jump into the fire for you if you ever need me to!’ Ronin raised her head to say, grinning widely.

‘The Magical Dream Princess, too. You all helped us. Please, if you ever do need anything, don’t hesitate to talk to us. We will always be ready,’ Miko said, raising her head and looking happy.

‘Buuuut, since you don’t seem like the kind to send us into sudden danger just yet, I did the next best thing and let you experience the fruit of my labour! I made a lemon curd tart!’ Ronin said, skipping and smiling as she gestured towards the not-entirely-professional-quality pastry available.

‘Emphasis on “lemon”. She put way too much lemon in it,’ Miko said, giggling a bit.

‘Eeeeeeeh, it’s probably still good! Have some cream!’ Ronin said, skipping over to grab a bowl of cream to bring over to the table.

“I-It looks d-delicious!” Connie told them happily after Ronin presented her culinary creation.

“Don’t mind if I do!” Mia added when the excitable samurai girl offered them some cream.

“Y-You k-know,” Connie said after a moment, while reaching into a coat pocket. “T-There actually is someplace w-we’d like to i-invite you to,” she explained, producing two colorful slips of paper. “D-Dan the D-Dolphin is hosting a b-big Christmas Party at his b-beach dimension. I-It s-sounds like it’ll be a l-lot of f-fun, s-so we’d be r-really h-happy if you s-said you'd come!”

“And those invitations are magical,” Mia added. “Just think about wanting more, and they’ll duplicate as many times as you’d like.”

‘Ooooh, a party! Thank you!’ Ronin said, reaching over and grabbing the papers. She then excitably looked over at Miko. ‘We going?’

‘We going,’ Miko shrugged with a smirk.

‘We going!’ Ronin cheered, before handing the pie-cutter over to the guests.

Then they ate away the evening, taking part in Ronin’s newly developed exceedingly sour but still kinda good lemon curd tart. It was a good time.

It was a regular night of patrol for the Ascendancy, as FanFan jumped from rooftop to rooftop, surveying the scene.
“Hmm, it’s become rather quiet after the whole shebacle in that other dimension,” she mused to herself, when she came to the fairgrounds at the city harbor. The place has been closed for winter, and so wasn’t hit as hard by the destructive events that had happened afterwards. This gave FanFan an idea. “I’ll go check this place out and go down the harbor,” she informed her comrades-in-arms. “See ya in 30 minutes at the bank~”. She then went down to the fairgrounds, and decided to take a stroll. “Ah, such a nice place, beautiful even when closed down...”

Perhaps unsurprisingly for such a whimsical girl, MDP had the exact same idea, seeing the fairgrounds as a perfect place to play around and test out her magic. Upon catching sight of the elegant Ascendancy girl, she gave a squeal of delight. “Wowie zowie~! (giggle!) Like, you’re that pretty witty person werson with the metal wetal armsie warmsies that Magical Dream Princess, like, totally wotally forgot the namey wamey of~!” the cheerful girl exclaimed. “Super sorries about that…” she added in a more sullen tone. “She wanted to talk with you super duper bad, but, like, since she didn’t remember wember your namey wamey, she didn’t know if she’d ever wever be able to find you again, but, like, Magical Dream Princess was super duper lucky enough to find you heresie weresie, so, like everythingie wingie is okie doki nowie~! (giggle!)”

After finishing her rambling explanation, the bubbly girl gave FanFan a big hug. “Like, heresie~!” she added after they’d separated, while producing a colorful piece of paper. “Magical Dream Princess wanted to invite you to a super duper fun Christmas Wistmas Party~! (giggle!) All her friendy wendies will be there, and one of them is this super duper adorable worable dolly wolly person werson, who just wuvs tea parties, and Magical Dream Princess would absolutelylutely wuv if you could come, and then we could have a super duper cute tea party together wether~! (giggle!)”

FanFan lightly gasped in surprise with her hands on her cheeks as MDP greeted her. “Magical Dream Princess! Oh, it is absolutely delightful to meet you again~” She didn’t seem upset at all about her name being forgotten, and politely hugged MDP back with the help of her metal arms, showing a surprising tenderness to them. “No need to be sorry. FanFan is a foreign name, so it can be difficult to remember at first~”.
Then MDP gave her an invitation, to which the Ascendancy girl looked astonished.
“For me? Oh, you shouldn’t have! I would love to join you, thank you!” She opened the invitation and read it, and a curious expression came to her.. “Dan the Dolphin? Is this the same dolphin I saw in the other dimension? Are you friends with them, MDP?”

“Yeperoonie~! (giggle!)” MDP replied. “She, like, totally wotally is~! Danny Wanny is, like, sooo super duper nicey wicey, and sooo totally wotally adorable worable that Magical Dream Princess can’t imagine wagine anybodywody not being friendy wendies with him~! (giggle!)” she added, smiling at the thought of the whimsical dolphin.

FanFan seemed to first stare at MDP, before she let out a curt giggle. “Oh, that’s good to hear. I must admit, I was a bit worried that he might be a familiar or demon that Mariette conjured up, but it seems I was misguided~”. She went over to a carousel, and petted one of the wooden horses. “Ah, this reminds me of when I was young.”

“Like, Danny Wanny’s nothing wothing like that~! (giggle!)” MDP replied after FanFan had voiced her concerns about the dolphin’s nature. “Danny Wanny’s a Lesser Wesser Forcey Worcey~! At least, that's what he said when Magical Dream Princess asked~! (giggle!)”

FanFan then proceeded to admire the horses of a nearby carousel, which caused MDP to bounce over while giggling with glee.

“Like, those are such pretty witty horsesie worsesies~! (giggle!) Magical Dream Princess always wanted to come heresy weresie and ride them, but Daddy Waddy wouldn’t let her!” the childish girl explained with a cute pout. “But, like, now that Magical Dream Princess is a magical wagical girl, she can come visit wisit the horsesie worsesies anywany timey wimey she wants~! (giggle!) Like, did FanFany WanWany’s mommy and daddy let her come to this placey wacey and ride the horsesie worsesies~?!” she asked excitedly. “That must have been, like, sooo super duper fun~! (giggle!)”

FanFan nodded. “Yes...It was a long time ago, but I vividly remember when dear mother took me to the fair. It was something we did every year, in fact.” She looked out towards the ocean, reminiscing. “I remember how we would first take a tour around all the attractions, basking in that excitement, followed by some cotton candy. Then we’d buy souvenirs, and I’d always get one of those little pendants. They were like lucky charms to me.”
Her tone changed.
“However, it was one day when my fortune was reversed...That was when I lost my parents to the demons.”

MDP listened to FanFan with a happy smile, until the Ascendancy girl mentioned losing her parents. To demons

“Golly wolly!” the whimsical girl exclaimed, her eyes tearing up and her hands covering her mouth in horror. “That’s, like, super duper awful waful! Magical Dream Princess is, like, sooo super duper sorry you had to go through something so terrible werrible!” MDP told FanFan, while giving the elegantly attired girl a big hug. “Magical Dream Princess lost her mommy wommy, too,” the childish girl confided. “She got super duper sicky wicky when Magical Dream Princess was very wery little wittle, but Magical Dream Princess still remember wembers how nicey wicey she was, and she still misses her lots and lots…”

“Oh, my condolences for your loss. I’m sure your mother would be proud of you. After all, you’re a magical girl blessed with the power to bring justice to this world.”She seemed to brighten up afterwards as a smile came to her face. “Shall we go look at the pier now?”

“The pier~?” MDP asked after FanFan seemed to cheer back up. “Magical Dream Princess guesses wesses we could~ She always wanted to walk along the pier, especially wecially this close to Christmas Wistmas, when it’s decorated with all those pretty witty lights~!” the cheerful girl explained. “But she doesn’t thinky winky we’ll see any wany of those tonight…” she added, looking around the darkened fairgrounds.

FanFan and MDP went to the pier, and just as MDP assumed, there were no decorations this year. She seemed to be deep in thought, until an idea came to her. “Oh, I know! If you want to see lights, I’m sure the carousel will illuminate brilliantly.” They went back to the carousel, where FanFan gracefully opened the door to the control station, using her Metal magic to remove the lock, turning it into a tiny statue of a nutcracker soldier in her hands.
“These are traditionally made of wood, but nonetheless, I would like you to have this~”

“Wowie zowie~! For Magical Dream Princess~?!” the whimsical girl exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with delight as she beheld the small figure. “Like, super duper thankie wankies~! (giggle!) Magical Dream Princess, like, totally wotally wuvs it~! (giggle!)” she added, giving FanFan a big hug.

FanFan graciously accepted the hug again. "You're welcome. Now, are you ready?" She pressed the switch on, and the carousel lighted up; numerous colors now surrounded the ride, placed into the central pillar as well as into the collars of the toy horses that now began to move. Cheerful music accompanied the whimsical sight.
"Ah, how nostalgic~" FanFan mused.

“Yaaay~! (giggle!)” MDP cheered, jumping up and down, while clapping her hands with glee. “FanFany WanWany woke up the merry werry go round~! (giggle!) It’s, like, sooo pretty witty~!” she added, while staring at the spinning collection of lights in childish wonderment. “Magical Dream Princess never ever got to see one of these thingie wingies in person werson, beforsie~! It’s even better than she imagined wagined~! (giggle!) Like, does FanFany WanWany wanna ride on the horsie worsies~?!” she asked excitedly. “Cause, like, Magical Dream Princess would totally wotally wuv it if we could ride them together wether~! (giggle!)”

“I would love to~” FanFan clapped her hands together with a sweet smile, and then proceeded to ride one of the toy horses. As they rode, FanFan seemed to be thinking.
“Magical Dream Princess, you are truly a wonder upon the world of magical girls. You know, we could use someone like you over on Beacon; someone who can dazzle the world with such many colors.”

“Beacon Weacon~?” MDP asked, tilting her head. “That namey wamey sounds familiar wiliar…” she added thoughtfully, while tapping a finger against her cheek.

FanFan out a hand over her mouth, visibly surprised. "Oh, you haven't heard of us? Beacon's an organization of magical girls who have united over the cause of bringing the light of peace and prosperity to the world. Together, we fight monsters, rescue civilians, and make sure the day is saved, as it were~" She stood up on her toy horse, easily balancing on it as it continued spinning around the carousel. "And we could have a spot of tea every day. Doesn't that sound lovely?"

“Wowie zowie~! Like, that soundy woundies super duper wuvly~! (giggle!)” MDP exclaimed cheerfully, her eyes glittering with wondrous excitement. “But, umm, Magical Dream Princess already has a Patron Watron person werson…” she explained, sounding a little apologetic. Brightening a bit, she added, “But, like, even if she can’t join Beacon Weacon, Magical Dream Princess would still really really wuv to work together wether with FanFany WanWany and all her other friendy wendies~! (giggle!) Would that be okie dokie~?” she asked, her face taking on a hopeful expression.

FanFan pouted, and crossed her arms. "I suppose...But it really would be a great opportunity. How about you one day come and visit our headquarters here in Penrose?" She jumped off the carousel. "Once you get to meet some of my sisters in battle, I'm sure you'd understand better."

“Like, Magical Dream Princess thinks that soundy woundies like super duper fun~! (giggle!)” the whimsical girl replied. “Like, making new friendy wendies is, like, the super duper besty westiest~! (giggle!) And, like, that remindy windies her of something womething~!” she added, her eyes glittering with joy. “That invitation wation thingie wingie Magical Dream Princess gave you is totally wotally magical wagical, so it can, like, duplicaty watey, so you can give one to everybodywody at Beacon Weacon~! (giggle!)”

FanFan blinked, and one of her metallic arms picked the invitation from a pocket.
“Oh, is that so? In that case I’m sure to bring in a plus one~”
The carousel slowed down to a stop, and FanFan offered her hand to MDP as she got off the ride. “When would you like to come visit, then? Next Saturday, perhaps?”

“Like, Magical Dream Princess has to check her schedule wedule thingie, but she thinky winkies that might work~! (giggle!)” she told FanFan as the Ascendancy girl helped her off the carousel. “And, like, if FanFany WanWany wants to keep in touchy wouchy, Magical Dream Princess can give you her phoney woney number wumber~! (giggle!) Ta daaa~!” she announced as she produced a bright pink phone, covered in stickers and glitter. “Like, this is Magical Dream Princess’s special wecial magical wagical girl phoney woney~! (giggle!) She decorated it aaaall by her selfy welfy~! (giggle!) Like, she added all these super duper cute thingie wingies to it, like hearts, and stars, and rainbows, and unicorns, and kitty witties…” she continued to ramble, pointing to each item like an excited child at show and tell. “And, like, the very best part is that her number wumber is right heresie as soon as she presses wesses this button wutton thingie~! (giggle!)” the hyperactive magical girl finally concluded with a big smile. “Like, she had to do that as her normal wormal selfey welfy, so that she could find it when she was Magical Dream Princess, cause, like, otherwise she’d totally wotally forget how to do it~! (giggle!)”

“Ooh, fashionable~” FanFan commented with restrained glee upon seeing MDP’s phone. “Mine isn’t as pretty as yours, but it serves its job well enough.” She had a smartphone made with a sleek, white design. “But I would love to try decorating mine too. Perhaps you’d know of some good keychains for it.” She shared her phone number with MDP. “I’m not really supposed to give this number to any non-Beacon members, but I trust that you’ll keep it a secret. Pinky promise?”
She asked, holding her pinky out.

“Pinky winky promise~! (giggle!)” MDP declared with an exuberant smile, while linking her own pinky with FanFan’s. “And, like, Magical Dream Princess would just wuv to helpy welpy FanFany WanWany decorate her phoney woney, too~! (giggle!)” she added, giving FanFan a playful wink. “Like, Magical Dream Princess is gonna write herselfy welfy a note right nowie, so she doesn’t forget~!”

“Alrighty~” FanFan giggled. “Goodbye for now then. See you soon!” She waved to the magical girl, and then left, using her metallic arms to swing under lightpoles like a mechanical monkey.

“Okie dokie~! (giggle!) Bye bye for nowie~!” she called, waving excitedly as FanFan departed. Giggling happily, she jumped on a newly-conjured unicorn pegasus and flew off into the winter skies in search of more nightmares to banish.

A girl stood, focused on the pins ahead of her. There was an alley. Ten pins. The ball in her hand. She took a deep breath, and… she rolled the bowling ball with a dramatic swing, releasing her grip of it just as her hand left the lowest part! The bowling ball took off at a dramatic speed, smashing straight into the pins! In a dramatic fashion, the pins flew in all directions, taking down all of them in one fell swoop!

‘YES! GOT THEM!’ the untransformed Mayra yelled out happily as she skipped on the spot, just about time for her invited friends to arrive at the abandoned bowling alley that Mayra had her technical friends hack to make functional for her.

“M-Mayra…?” a timid voice called out. “A-Are y-you in h-here?”

A moment later, a transformed Connie would emerge into view, followed by Gaia, close behind. The masked girl and her verdant friend had been patrolling the city, when Mayra had texted them, asking to meet up.

“Bowling, hmm?” Gaia observed with an approving smile. “That might be rather enjoyable.”

‘Oh, yes! I’m here, I’m here!’ Mayra replied, skipping over to where Connie and Mia was coming in. She waved at them with both hands. ‘Yepp, it’s me! Just got my disguise on! It’s just SO much more satisfying when I succeed without using my normal dragon strength…!’ she said, laughing a bit about it. ‘You like it, too? It’s really kinda fun! Perfect accuracy, needed over and over, except I can do it on varying angles and spins, and, haha!’ Mayra laughed a bit over Gaia’s apparent interest in it

‘Anyways!’ Mayra’s gaze sharpened towards Connie. ‘Are we ready!?’ she asked, eyes positively sparkling.

Connie couldn’t help but giggle at Mayra’s excited ramblings, but her amused expression dissolved into a slight frown a moment later.

“U-Uhh… R-Ready for w-what?” the masked girl asked, more than a little confused.

‘We were going to give me a nightmare, right!?’ Mayra asked, eyes still shining.

“O-Oh! U-Uhh, I g-guess we c-could d-do that n-now…” Connie conceded somewhat hesitantly. She really didn’t like the idea of giving one of her friends nightmares, but Mayra did seem very enthusiastic about it…

“Are you certain about this, Mayra?” Gaia asked, slightly concerned. “The nightmares my dearest Connie creates draw upon your deepest fears and have the potential to be highly unpleasant.”

Mayra grinned eagerly at Connie’s acceptance, and then turned her head to grin at Gaia when she asked if she was sure. ‘I couldn’t tell you what my deepest fears are. I’m REALLY curious, what’s my nightmare? Can I beat it? What effect will it have on me? What will break first? Oooooh, I get tingly just thinking about it-!’ she said, clutching her fists, her eyes still sparkling. She looked back to Connie. ‘Should I be my normal self? I was thinking maybe I should be human-me to not endanger you while I’m in the dream? Or maybe that’d make the dream worse? How about it!?’ Mayra asked, highly enthusiastic.

“Umm, I d-don’t think it r-really m-matters,” Connie would tell her. “I-I was g-gonna p-place you in a N-Nightmare B-Barrier,” the masked girl went on to explain. “S-So, uh, t-that should p-prevent you f-from h-hurting us, or a-anything else h-here…” She was still worried, not so much for herself, but for Mayra. “I-If y-you’re sure t-this is w-what you r-really want, t-then I g-guess w-we can s-start now…”

Raising a hand towards Mayra, Connie conjured a Nightmare Barrier, centered on the dragon girl. Sickly tendrils of dark energy swirled out of the masked girl’s hand to coalesce into an obsidian dome. Harsh flashes of amethyst lightening briefly illuminated that dreadful pocket dimension, revealing the shadowy forms of twisted tentacles, wicked spikes, clusters of unblinking eyes, and various warped faces frozen in horrific torment. Whether or not any of this bothered Mayra in the slightest was rendered immaterial a moment later, when Connie charged the barrier with a massive, focused Nightmare Pulse, after which, the dragon girl would suddenly find herself someplace altogether different…

‘Okay!’ Mayra said, and as the dark tendrils swirled out from Connie, Mayra released her human disguise and then briefly flexed her muscles in her dragon form, tail swinging a bit as she excitedly focused forward. Mayra was inherently unfazed by most things that Connie first showed her, but then-

Mayra suddenly found herself randomly in a normal living room. There was a table for eating, a TV on the side, a couch, shelves, windows, a door, etc. There’s a garden outside the window. She looked around in confusion. She’d really expected something that she was going to fight against. Immediately bored of this environment, the dragon girl walked over to the door, gripped the handle and pulled. Not only did it not open, it didn’t even budge. Somewhat irked, Mayra punched a fireball into it, expecting it to be blasted off its hinges. The fire impacted and dispersed, and… nothing... happened? The door stood entirely unharmed.

Realizing she was trapped, Mayra went around and kicked and slamed into every surface of the room, trying to find a way out. Nothing. The furniture inside the room were easy enough to destroy, but it brought her no pleasure because she still couldn’t get out. Worse, destroying that furniture made the room even more featureless, making Mayra want to leave even more. The garden outside the windows remained unchanged and free, but Mayra couldn’t get there. She struck at the window trying to force her way outside, but the unbreakable window just wouldn’t let her.

She felt time pass. Seconds were minutes were hours were days, an ungodly amount of time. She felt alone and scared, two feelings she had to contemplate the fact she could feel at all. Even if she hadn't actually been experiencing this for too long, she felt like she's been here forever. And... it feels like the room is getting smaller. Mayra had a startling realization. The room was getting smaller, very slowly, over an exceptionally long amount of time…

Grabbed by a panic unlike what she had ever felt before, she slammed herself against the window, blazing up an inferno using all her fire-powers and punched as hard as she could into the window, managing only to hurt herself. After enough punching and kicks, her hands and knees were bleeding, and the window wasn’t even singed. She screamed at the window as she slammed her head into it, but once again, she only succeeded in making her forehead bleed. She stumbled back, gasping a bit and would have fallen over, but the room was now so small she couldn't even fall backwards. Her back just hit the wall. She’d been trying to break the window for that long.

The room was so small she couldn’t strike the window properly. Unable to give up, she still tried to strike the window, which still showed the unchanged vision of freedom just outside. Mayra screamed and filled the tiny room with fire as her panic continued, and she once again felt like she was stuck in there for far, faaaar longer than she actually was, trapped in a tiny pocket all alone and unable to get away...

Mayra woke up. She winced, gasping for air, strings of smoke and fire flowing off her scaly body within the barrier. She sat up, taking deep breaths, contemplating what she had just experienced with wide eyes. Okay, seemed like she could have nightmares, after all. She straightened her back, growling and stretched out her limbs, relieved to be able to stretch them out again, relaxing with closed eyes, not saying a word to the ones who put her in the nightmare for now…

… Then Mayra grinned widely, opening a determined pair of eyes at Connie, bringing her dragon hands together and cracked her knuckles loudly.

Again.’

Having dispersed the Nightmare Barrier shortly after Mayra had woken up, Connie was stunned when the draconic girl asked to go through the whole thing again. Connie had watched Mayra’s experience via her mystic artifact, or at least the beginnings of it, and was horrified by what she’d seen. Greatly distressed by how her friend was suffering, she had wanted to end the nightmare herself, but Gaia had persuaded her that such an action would be a great disservice to their friend. Mayra had asked for this, and it was only right to allow the monster girl to see it through to the end. Even so, Connie’s gentle heart couldn’t bear to put her friend through further suffering.

“A-Again…?” Connie asked, her mask displaying an incredibly concerned visage as she knelt down in front of Mayra, her trembling hands clasped over her heart. “B-But w-why?! she asked, black tears streaming down the cheeks of her mask. She was utterly unable to comprehend why anyone would want to voluntarily suffer such torment.

Mayra smiled, facing Connie’s disbelief straight on. She looked intently at her. ‘It was unlike any challenge I have ever faced before. It wasn’t a challenge of strength, it was a challenge of the mind. I didn’t even know there were things I was afraid of. All my strength was useless against the power you command. You are amazing, Connie,’ the dragon girl said, meaning every word.

‘… But I haven’t given up yet! I lost this first round, but I want to go at it again! I’ll find some way to win! I’ll defeat your nightmare, and become even stronger for it! That’s why, that’s why I want to experience that again! I can confront my fears, and your magic at the same time! A challenge like no other! I… I’m so excited!’ Mayra said, breathing out a slight puff of flame extending only a decimeter from her mouth.

‘Will you please let me try again!?’ Mayra asked, clutching her fists, her expression one of eagerness. She did recognize that Connie wasn’t comfortable with it, but at the same time, this was just so… glorious…!

As Connie listened to Mayra’s words, she began to understand where her friend was coming from. The dragon girl wanted to conquer her fears, just like Connie herself did. Because of that, the masked girl reluctantly decided to grant her friend’s request.

“A-All right…” she conceded with a sigh of resignation. “W-We can d-do it again. B-But I s-still feel like I’m b-being a bad friend…”

Mayra grinned so happily. ‘I think you’re being awesome! You’re facing your own fears to let me challenge mine! That makes you the best of friends! Thanks, Connie!’ she said, exceedingly excited.

“O-Oh! U-Umm, y-you’re v-very welcome, Mayra,” Connie said with a smile as the cheeks of her mask turned a bright red. “H-Hearing you s-say that m-means a l-lot.”

‘Alright! With that covered, let’s do this again!’ Mayra said, stepping back from Connie again and taking a pose as if she was going to actually fight the nightmare, albeit armed with additional knowledge this time.

Once again, the Nightmare Barrier was conjured, and once again, Mayra would find herself in the same small, outwardly unthreatening room.

Inside the room again, Mayra grinned. She knew what she had to do. This wasn’t a challenge she could overcome with raw power! It was one of those “master your mind” kind of things! So, with determined moves, the dragon girl sank down onto crossed legs to sit, putting her hands on her legs, closed her eyes, and focused. She just had to not break down. If she didn’t break down, she’d have won. As simple as that.

So, uh. Just how long did she have to sit here?

She tightened her grip on her legs, blinking a little at the realization that nothing was changing. The imposing walls still closed in around her over an unbelievably long time and the teasing unbreakable window still promised freedom just out of her reach. It was thoroughly against her nature to sit still like this. Was it even helping? What was she even doing? Mayra shook her head, trying to get those thoughts out of her head, yet her heart-rate was increasing, her limbs starting to shake. It was taking so long. The walls were even closer now.

Mayra grunted, hanging her head, itching her eyes shut, clenching her fists. No, she wouldn’t let it! She wouldn’t break just by this! She was stronger than this! She gave an unintended whimper as some flames were coming off her body, from the stress she was feeling. She wasn’t built to stay still. Time was still passing, at an unbelievable pace, making her aware of how alone and trapped she was. The walls were closing in. Her whole body was shaking somewhat now. She was telling her body to cooperate, this wasn’t so bad, she knew what was really going on, and-

A piece of the approaching wall touched her foot. In sheer instinct, Mayra kicked at the wall with the full force of her leg, but the only thing she managed was to break her foot. With the pain surging through her, she lost any chance of staying still. She screamed, fire overtook the room once again, and she flailed in panic…

‘W-well darn, that didn’t work…!’ a panting Mayra eventually said, back in the real world, a hand on her heavily beating heart and eyes wide in alarm, her body all tense and breathing rapidly from the settling panic. Yet, her tone was weirdly cheerful for what she was commenting on, and her face still bore this wide smile of someone who was kinda amused by all of this. ‘R-right, maybe I should consider my tactics before I go again, haha,’ she chuckled, also stammering a little for maybe the first time in her life. … Though then she smirked a little wider at Connie. ‘… Or maybe I should just ram my head at it until it no longer scares me? That kinda sounds fun. Hahaha!’ she laughed some more, entertaining the idea.

For a moment, Connie just stared at her friend. She felt so bad that she was the one responsible for putting the dragon girl through this horrible ordeal and her body trembled at seeing the condition Mayra was in. But, somehow, the monster girl still seemed to want more…

“U-Ummm, i-if you t-think that will w-work…” Connie said hesitantly, still unsure if Mayra’s new plan would be at all viable. “J-Just don’t h-hurt yourself, o-okay?” she added, placing a concerned hand on the dragon girl’s shoulder.

Mayra blinked a little in surprise at Connie placing a hand on her shoulder. From the touch, Mayra calmed down a bit, smiling. ‘Heh, to make you worry so about me, I must have been worse for wear,’ she said, and then her gaze flashed up with newfound determination, her fists clenching with incredible guts. ‘Don’t worry! I’ll show that dream who’s boss! With this boost in confidence of you caring about me, there’s no way I’ll lose! Count on it! Send me in again!’

~Ten minutes later~

‘THE DREAM’S GOT TO BE CHEATING! I’m calming down, just as I have to, but the dream keeps, like, injecting despair into my head, IT’S GOT TO BE CHEATING! I wouldn’t panic that easily…!’ a somewhat alarmed Mayra complained with wide, frowning eyes, sitting shaking somewhat on the floor, some flames leaking out between her scales as she tried going over what went wrong in her head over and over, unconvinced at the result. ‘Grrr! Again!’ she requested, fists clenched.

~Twenty minutes later~

‘Could you like, I don’t know, make your nightmare not do that? Wait, right, that’d be pointless, I have to beat the nightmare as it is, or it won’t count!’ Mayra said, pacing back and forth over a bowling alley, frowning and walking with the pace of someone somewhat upset and really just had to move. ‘Maybe if I took some calming medication…? No, wait, that’d be cheating, too!’ she grunted, crossing her arms, stomping a bit with her foot. ‘Ooogh, thinking was never my strong suit! Get me in there again, I’ll figure something out!’ she requested, spinning around to Connie…!

~Thirty minutes later~

‘What am I doing wrong? I’m focusing all I have to try to accept the scene as it is. What am I so afraid of? It’s just a room! I don’t… I don’t get it,’ Mayra asked, kind of curled up to the side for a bit, bouncing with her legs somewhat. ‘I just… need to sit still for a long period of time. I just literally have to do nothing. Why is that so hard? Why do I always panic? I don’t get it. But even if I don’t get it, I won’t give up,’ she said, and turned over towards Connie, frowning. ‘Please, again!’

~??? minutes later~

Mayra was lying prone on the floor, staring up at the ceiling, panting a bit. There was a decent amount of disbelief in her eyes, and her body was also completely exhausted.

‘I… I think… that’ll do it for today. Thank you, Connie. You win. Hahaha…’ she said, her voice kind of weak compared to earlier, yet she still chuckles, even when utterly floored. Looks like they were done with nightmares for now.

This was probably for the best, as, a moment later, a swirling, multi-colored vortex appeared above them and deposited a giggling young woman with pink hair. The speed of her descent was such that it caused her skirt to fly up, revealing frilly panties covered with smiling flowers.

“Ta-daaa~!” the whimsical girl announced in a cheery voice as she struck a cute pose. “Magical Dream Princess is here to make all the nasty wasty nightmares go bye bye, nowie~! (giggle!) Huh~?” she added after she’d focused enough to fully take stock of the situation. “Like, it was just you, Connie Wonnie~!” she exclaimed, her eyes brightening as a big smile spread across her face. “And, like, Gaia Waia’s also heresie, and Mayra Wayra, too~! (giggle!) Magical Dream Princess is, like, so super duper happy to see you girls~! She sensed some super duper strong nightmare wightmare magic wagic, so she totally wotally thought she’d have to fight some meanie weanie heads, but now she gets to play with her friendy wendies instead~! (giggle!)” she cheered, bouncing up and down, while gleefully clapping her hands.

‘… Hey, it’s the pink princess…!’ Mayra said, grinning and waving to her, still lying where she was on the floor. ‘Connie’s got some awesome magic at her disposal. I insisted she use it on me until I beat it, but I haven’t been able to yet!’ she said, chuckling a bit at the end.

“I-I’m just g-glad I didn’t h-hurt you too b-badly….” A still concerned Connie told the dragon girl as she knelt down beside her.

“You wanted to have nightmare wightmares on purpose wurpose~?” MDP asked Mayra, tilting her head in obvious confusion. “That’s, like, totally wotally crazy wazy!” she exclaimed, her expression one of complete shock.

‘But, if I beat the nightmare wightmare, that’d be totally wotally awesome sauceome, wouldn’t it?’ Mayra asked, grinning and copying MDP’s speech for a bit. ‘In any case, I’m totally fine! Connie’s really nice to me, haha,’ Mayra said, holding up a thumbs up, but because she was looking back at MDP, she was probably holding the thumb upside down and pointing down at the floor.

“Magical Dream Princess guesses wesses it could be…” the whimsical girl conceded, while seemingly thinking over her draconic friend’s words. “But, like, you made poor Connie Wonnie super duper uncomfortable womfortable!” MDP admonished, while wagging her finger in a scolding motion. “And that’s, like, totally wotally not okie dokie! Bad Mayra Wayra!”

“I-It’s o-okay…!” Connie spoke up, hoping to calm MDP’s indignation. “M-Mayra j-just w-wanted to o-overcome her f-fears,” the masked girl explained. “A-And, as s-someone who w-wants to do the s-same, I was h-happy to help in a-any way I c-could!”

“Yes, you did a very good thing, little sister,” Gaia concurred, kneeling down next to Connie and gently massaging the timid girl’s shoulders. Turning to address MDP, she added, “And remember what I said at the beach dimension? About what happens when Connie doesn’t give enough nightmares? Well,” she continued while giving both Connie and Mayra a warm smile. “I don’t think her Patron will have anything to complain about, after tonight.”

“Sooo, Mayra Wayra and Connie Wonnie helpy welpied each other wother~?” MDP asked, before smiling with her characteristic joyful exuberance. “Like, that makes Magical Dream Princess sooo super duper happy wappy~! (giggle!) Super duper sorries, Mayra Wayra…” she added. “Magical Dream Princess didn’t understandy wandy everythingie wingie… But, like, Magical Dream Princess just noticed woticed~! This is a bowling woling placey wacey, isn’t it~?! Magical Dream Princess has never gone bowling woling beforsie, but she’d, like, totally wotally wuv to try it out nowie~! (giggle!) Can she~?!” the hyperactive girl asked excitedly. “Can she~?! Can she~?! Can she~?!”

Mayra totally had her own excuse prepared, but seemed like Gaia had it covered, so Mayra just grinned. ‘Wait, dreamie can sense nightmares? So, if Connie’s ever in trouble, can she just give herself a nightmare and you could sense it and come running?’ Mayra asked, curious if that’d work.

Then, upon bowling being reached. ‘Oh, yes!’ she called, suddenly flying back onto her feet like the earlier exhaustion was all in her head. It was, mental exhaustion, anyway! ‘Let’s do it! Let’s bowl together!’ she called, and then disguised herself as a human again to limit her incredible strength to show her capability in the art of bowling.

“Yaaay~!” MDP cheered. “Bowling woling time~! Bowling woling time~! (giggle!) And, like, Magical Dream Princess can to totally wotally sense those nasty wasty nightmare wightmares~!” the whimsical girl added, answering Mayra’s earlier question. “Like, she wouldn’t be able to stoppy woppy them if she couldn’t findy windy them~! (giggle!)” she noted with a playful wink. “But, like, she’d never ever wever want Connie Wonnie to give herselfy welfy a nightmare wightmare, cause that would be, like, super duper mean to poor Connie Wonnie! And, like, if Connie Wonnie’s ever in trouble wouble, she has Gaia Waia to keep her safey wafey~! (giggle!) They are super duper best friendy wendies in the whole wide worldsie, after allsie~! (giggle!)”

“W-We s-sure are!” Connie added, smiling as she gave her verdant friend a hug. “B-But I’m s-so happy I was a-able to m-make so many n-new friends, too!” she added. “I-I’ve n-never been able to d-do anything like this b-before, so I’m r-really looking forward to it!”

“As am I, little sister,” Gaia agreed. “Now then,” she added, picking up a green bowling ball and spinning it between her fingers. “Shall we begin?”

Dana awoke just in time for dinner, and, having worked up quite an appetite, the cheerful girl eagerly set about piling her tray with food the moment she entered the cafeteria. Her characteristic energy having been fully restored, she listened intently as her fellow newly-minted Ars Magi described their experiences. As the conversation went on, it seemed as though Dana’s team had not been alone in having to face an “unforeseen” threat. In one particularly extreme case, the “surprise Void” had even managed to blast a hole in the side of the team’s observation tower. Dana thought that was pretty crazy, but it was Penny who voiced a concern about a possible ulterior motive behind the sheer number of “accidents” that had occurred during the various tests. A bit on the naive side to consider such potentially sinister conspiracy theories herself, Dana simply stared in wide eyed surprise at what her bespectacled roommate had suggested.

“Woah… Ya really think they might’ve planned this?” she whispered, clearly shocked by the implications of that train of thought. “That’s kinda dark, Penny,” she added, before brightening as a grin spread across her face. “Still, no matter what the case, I’m sure we’ve got nothin’ to worry about as long as you're on our side!” Giggling, she wrapped an arm around her lightning-wielding friend and gave her a playful squeeze. “You were totally AMAZING out there, Penny! Even Magical Maid Altea couldn’t hold a candle to the kinda power you were throwin’ around! It was really somethin’ else! You guys think so too, right?!” she asked the rest of the team, her eyes shining with excitement.
